Im in NYC and i have the worst reception with this phone. It goes from three bars to zero without even moving the dc for than 2 inches. Sometimes it drops completely then comes back full bars with the 1x symbol in place of the 3g icon. Does it just keep jumping from tower or signal or something? This is very frustrating since i switched from my iPhone which had FULL bars everywhere, for this. Is there an option in the settings that can help me out?

maybe try an antenna booster!

Try a factory reset.
I have a long thread about this on the motorola forums. Long story short, call *611. Tell them about the signal fluctuations. Especially if you experience no signal often. They sent me a replacement phone to my hotel in Newark (not here by choice, i swear) and i've had nothing but 4 bars since. Search for BigForNothing on the Droid X motorola forums. Reception problems. Should be good to go from there. Verizon was very quick and helpful in getting me my replacement.
I'd try a factory reset and if that does not help, get the phone replaced. The Droid X has a very powerful antenna in it and should perform very well even in the more fringe areas.
Thanks for the heads up, im definitely calling vzw today.

Did a factory reset before i rooted or updated to their first ota update (it has had bad reception since out of the box). Just tried *229 option one then again with option 2 (option two froze my phone after it was done and i had to pull the battery out to restart). I even tried* 22899 but i did all this while i was in harlem where i have full bars all the time so i have to wait til i get home to see if there is any improvement.

The algorithm used for the display on the iphone has been admitted to being incorrect by apple. The display in bars is showing more service than you actually have; even worse when they still drop calls
MANY gingerbread phones have reported signal issues. The DX being one of the worst. The recently released 602 update was supposed to fix the issue with an updated baseband. However, I am still having problems with random wifi and signal loss. usually without the lost signal icon. The phone simply stops exchanging any data. As if in airplane mode but no indication of it.

The very issue u speak of, except it was also doing it before the update. I really want to keep this phon, but not if the radio can't keep a decent connection

Are you having the problem just in one place or all over in your area?
I've seen the 4g disconnect and reconnect when I have a really weak 4g signal. When I am at home I have 1/3 bars on the 4g icon when I am inside and it will sometimes lose connection for a minute. I also see pretty slow speeds, usually even slower than 3g.
When I am outdoors or in a part of town closer to the source of the signal I get much better results. It maintains the connection fine and the speeds are great. With 1/3 bars I usually see 1-2 mbps download, with 2/3 bars I typically see around 3-4 mbps. One time I drove around until I found 3/3 bars and ran a few speed tests and it hit around 5.8 to 5.9 mbps consistently, the upload was up over 1 mbps too. I'd like to see less gaps in the 4g coverage, but hey it is a new network.
I'd say your disconnects are just related to a bad signal in your area, but if it happens no matter where you are it could be related to the phone. Maybe try hunting for a stronger signal and then see if you still have disconnects?
I'm in a 4g area per the sprint map. I'm pretty sure that map is none too accurate. Also, if it's 4g though Clear (basically subcontracted service), I think Clear's network is good or bad on a device by device basis. I've had a total of 4 devices at home through the Clear network and only the clear mobile has been any good. 2 home modems, the mobile (Spot), and the Epic. My epic has the same problem as yours and I'm in an official "indoor" area. My wager is that the network is still being rolled out and Clear has oversold some (or many) markets.

That perfectly describes my situation..I was telling my friends that that map isn't really accurate apparently because I am also in an supposed indoor area..but even if I go outside an walk down toward the main street I will only get one bar..and maybe 2 if I take my hands off of it..so I know the ma is exagerated greatly. I'm in. Different place right now and while I get two bars outsde even with my hands on it..I can't connect at all right now..sucks period.
They should rename their network from the "now" network to the "outside" network..because even my 3g never goes above half strength indoors...

same here, its funny though, 2 bars of 4g and ill get random disconnects on the epic. my evo is perfectly stable, so id almost say its something with the phone. i may swing by the sprint store during lunch and see what they say.
I get the same 4g connectivity now as I did pre IO7. At work here in Southern New Jersey with two bars inside. Sometimes drops to one. Never disconnects. Just ran a speed test inside.

Hi guys.
My dad moved to miami recently and he took his htc evo over there.
The phone works great except in his apartment, he can get almost full bars outside but 1-2 inside and calls drop out or don't go through all the time.
He doesnt have home internet so the airave is not an option.
Im looking for something preferbly under $100 to boost his signal inside.
I checked his PRL and its up to date and i also thought oof forcing the phone to roam on verizon but he may get caught and have his line terminated.
I went to visit him the other day and noticed on my sister's iPhone 4s(sprint also) that the signal was so weak that her battery took a 25% hit in 1 hour after unplugging it from the wall. He also got an extended battery for the phone since it wouldn't last long on the stock 1500mah one.
All suggestions are welcome thanks guys
I used to have damn near zero signal in my house till I switched to the swagged out stock rom and lionfish kernel. Now its just moderate. Battery got better too

Could be you only have full bars of 2G data speed. You are either being throttled for excessive use from your carrier or your carrier only has 2G speeds where you live. Where I work the entire county only has 2G Edge speeds from AT&T even though their coverage map shows 3G for the area. Check your data type and speeds with an app like Network Signal info.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.android.telnet&hl=en
Happens to me a lot as well. I show full 4g and yet everything times out and wont load because data is so slow. I'm also in a good coverage area where i get 12-14 Mbps speed with other phones and when this one is acting normal.

The towers you are connecting to are probably overloaded. Thin of them as a wireless access point at your house with 1 internet line. If too many connect to and use that line, the connection gets slower. Would be nice if cell providers posted tower stats in your area. Would save a lot of angry calls

Glad im not the only one suffering.. I didnt really have the problem on stock so much.. just since unlocking and flashing new roms.
To the person who mentioned carrier throttling, its certainly not that as one minute i'll get full speed and the next (youtube for example) will just stop and start saying no signal retry and then if i turn the phone off and back on again it will work. How can a carrier throttle you when you only have a 2Gb usage limit and then they charge you afterwards that makes no sense.
Also its not a 2G problem as Signal checker shows 3G and also now EE all around my area. Besides my wife's S3 on the same network is getting full speeds where im not or anything even though im apparently at full strength H
I hope this gets sorted soon as its also affecting calls.. I'll have what looks like full signal while playing a game then suddenly a text to say someone tried ringing me like 3 minutes before!!
probably switching from HSDPA to HSPA+.
did you notice a H on top of your signal bar, that switches to H+ when the lag is over?
I have had this problem for a long time, since I got my Galaxy Nexus and now again on my Nexus 4, and finally got so fed up that I have been testing it all day and getting screenshots ready to make my own post about this so I am pretty relieved to see this post!
I live in Philadelphia and use T-Mobile. I have had T-Mobile here for years and never had this problem before. When they upgraded to 3G I had amazing speed boosts and when they did HSPA+ it got even better but that was on a G1/G2. On my Nexus phones the internet is damn near unusable in center city but what is so odd about it is that in my Google searches about the problem I can only seem to find posts raving about T-Mobile in the city and how Philly keeps getting improvements including the new improved 1900Mhz HSPA+42 but I have never even seen my Nexus 4 on the +42 network the best it goes to is +15 and even that makes no difference because the internet is so slow and unrelaible that unless I am on Wifi, my phone just sits in my pocket useless.
I'm really at my wits end about this and no one, Google or T-Mobile seems to take responsibility or have any advice on how to fix it except the pointless factory reset.
I've seen a brief mention on XDA about a fast.tmobile.com APN and I changed to that and I'd like to imagine that it showed some type of improvements but certainly not with data speeds/latency/integrity of connection. If anything, it may have improved signal 'strength' (used lightly because regardless of what my strength is listed as the connection sucks.
To be clear, I am connected to HSPA and HSPA+ when the connection is being used, like it should, but these are the best speeds I managed to get throughout the day today as I moved around campus trying different spots.
Please, someone have advice!!

I am using the stock kernel, stock radio although not the stock ROM. I am pretty sure I had this problem before I rooted (I say pretty sure to be conservative with my answer since I am not 100% sure but I am definitely 90%)
Is anyone confident about their knowledge regarding APN settings? I have seen like 15 different configurations for T-Mobile's APN and have no idea which one to try and would prefer not to just go through them one by one -- I've got things to do!

I'm on stock 4.2.1. Phone is rooted and boot loader unlocked. For about two days now I'm having signal drops from 4bars, then greyed out 4 bars and jumps between H to 3G. Settings for LTE revert to WCDMA every time I lose reception. Also dialer crashes/ force closes if I have an incoming call and sends all calls to voicemail. I can dial out but at the end of my calls when I go to hang up I see the popup that phone process crashed.
My carrier is Bell Canada and the phone worked fine for about 10 days before this started happening.
Any tips or advice to help me out is appreciated. Thanks.

Anyone else having these issues? I've noticed that places I always had at least 1-2 bars with my note 2 I will not have any service with my note 3. Also I have been dropping calls in areas that I never did. Could this be my new sim card or should I exchange my phone? I also feel that my wifi connection stability/range is slightly worse than before.

I hope this is just a first software or sim issue. Or at the very worst a first production run issue. I will likely be bringing mine to Verizon this weekend to test and new sim or exchange if that doesn't make any difference. Annoying.
Idk how much it will help you but I noticed I was in 3G a lot of the time as well. Definitely more than my N2, I switched my preferred network to LTE/CDMA instead of Global and I now have 4GLTE way more. As far as the wifi and phone reception, I myself haven't noticed any huge difference but I did read the international version of the N3 already received 2 updates and they supposedly not only improved the wifi and antenna signals but also battery life. Who knows when we'll see an update though. We are on Verizon.

Tried that and it actually made my signal significantly worse. I switched back to global and my problem seems way worse tonight than any day this week. Can barely hold onto a signal in places that I never had an issue before. Battery pull didn't help at all. I constantly get a message that says I can't send messages and then asks me to retry. Frustrating, will be going to Verizon tomorrow or Friday to return/exchange
Just now noticing this
I wonder if this has anything to do with being rooted? it seems like I just started dropping calls like crazy just today. I do remember getting the sent error on some text messages, though I can't remember if that started befor or after rooting.
Haven't had a single issue with signal or dropping calls. Also my 4G speeds are pretty insane. I'm thinking there are some units with defective radios.
Coming from a Motorola RAZR, I had LTE and 4G in a lot more locations than the Note3 is getting. Sometimes I even lose signal completely while it's switching towers. My RAZR never had this issue.
Is the antenna just weaker in the Samsungs?

Had a Razr Maxx about 8 months ago, beginning to miss that part too. Can't use wifi because of the unsolvable multicast packet wakelock/drain. In buildings where I used to get 2 bars 4G with the Note 2 its now either 2 bars 3G or 1 bar 1X if I hold the phone at the bottom (where I think the radios might be). Needless to say I pay attention during the entire class period now.

Living on the edge of 3G coverage...when I say edge I mean 5 ft behind my house I would drop signal on most phones. 2 bars and no dropped calls or failed to send texts I would get with the old S4. So im getting great reception.
I spend time in a remote part of north Idaho. I get 1 bar of signal, no 4G, and limited 3G (instead of 1G) when I am lucky. I previously have chosen Moto phones because of the weak signal in that area. I bought a Note 3 fully prepared to return the phone in my 14 day window and swap for the Droid Maxx if necessary. I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of the radio reception. It is on par with my previous Droid Razr. I have no complaints.
I've noticed my N3 gets poor or no 4g reception where my Note 2 got great 4G. I also noticed it would be on 3g when I know there's 4g in the area I'm in (e.g. highway), and I also found that if I disconnected data manually or made a call and disconnected (which also disconnects 3g), sometimes it would find and connect to 4G.
I hope this gets fixed in a radio update

Signal strength horrible
Just bought a note 3 coming from a droid Bionic and original droid before that. The signal in my building is not great but my Bionic rarely had a problem with 4g. The note 3 is dropping to 3g and I have even seen 1x (haven't seen that in years). Data doesn't work half the time at work and that is an issue. Since I haven't had a Samsung before does anyone think this will be fixed? I did the update yesterday and was hoping that was this fix but nope. I was tossed between the note 3 and the droid maxx( for battery life). I still have a week to switch (for a fee of course) but the phone is awesome. However I can't live with bad reception. Does anyone have a comparison with the droid maxx for reception?
Thanks for the help.
