I was downloading asphalt 5 on the hd2 running froyo 2.2 ...the package was 99 mb...so i disabled the screen timout ...and left the screen on so that it can download the game without the wifi getting off ...and that was around 1:50 Am at night ...i was a bit sleepy and kept my phone in between 2 cushions so that there is no light coming from the phone and disturbing me ...i slept ..and when i woke up at 8 :30 in the pmoring ..the first thing i did was to see my phone ...android was running ...screen was on ..the phone was so hot that i had to drop it on my bed ..it was super hot ..i thought that it musy have damaged my CPU ...but i dont know ....i had an battery application which showed my phone temeperature and it showed 65 degree ...omg ....the phone is working ...-------but i must have damaged anything inside due to overheating ???? do u guyzz think so ?
not sure if any damage has been caused, but im running that and i have asphalt 5 and my phone was on charge while downloading and still didnt get no way near that hot and hasnt done while using it for 2 days.

You're all kind of genius ball into one, arent you?
running android with not-yet-perfected-for-HD2 power management (HOT)
using wifi to download 100mb file (HOT)
leave the phone running with screen timeout off (HOT)
..and the killer, stuck it between two cushions so NO HEAT COULD ESCAPE (RETARDEDLY HOT)
With that said, kudos for HTC for having a well-designed phone.

just want to share my strange experience here. i had a battery drain issue (about 60 mA) almost everytime I slept. it turned out it only happened when I put my phone beside my bed! you know the gap between the bedding and the wood? that's where I placed my phone. just last night I tried to prove this theory once again by putting my phone there. and just as expected, currentwidget shows 60 mA of battery drain. then I moved my phone to my desk and some minutes later the drain is stable (8 mA). what's probably the cause of this, you think?

Most likley you are masturbating too much and causing too much friction near you bed which is causing a drain in energy from your battery as it will be in your energy field.
You can stop this drain by...
a) wrapping your head in tinfoil
b) wanking less.
Thats obviously just a coincident.
But, here's my theory:
When I have my phone near when trying to sleep, I play some games, browser internet etc (when it's not near, I just sleep), so you might have a lot of apps running, some of the apps are stupid and would cause high battery usage event when you turn phone screen off.
My solution was using autokiller on screen off, so when I turn if off now it would kill all those apps giving me stable long battery usage no matter where you put your phone.

No offense, but I'm pretty sure it's not a coincident, because since I put my phone on the desk the drain doesn't happen anymore. And I've been doing this for some weeks. But last night, out of curiosity I put the phone in the bedside gap again and voila, 60 mA. Maybe there's magnet inside my bed or something?

For clarity, if you have problems booting/charging after battery goes flat, do the below and all will be well:
Leave your phone off
plug it in to charge for approx 30 minutes
unplug it and pop out the battery (so it will boot)
replace the battery
boot up the phone
plug it in while it is booting up.

no it wont, no danger at all.
i have no idea where all the rumours are coming from regarding the fear of MAGLDR and brickage, in fact it is far easier to completely brick your phones in a Windows Mobile envoronment than android through MAGLDR.
although in reality it is very very diffucilt to brick a HD2, once i lost all laptop power during a HSPL flash and it was still fine....
Draining battery / Running NANDroid / Flashing through MAGLDR will never brick a phone. EVER. PERIOD.
the only way people have ever bricked a HD2 is when they have a TMOUS handset (american model only) and flash a 51 radio. And even then it can still be revived through JTAG

It wont brick your phone but you may have to pull the battery to charge it. Some users are claiming that it wont charge and the battery has to be pulled. As long as you have HSPL installed your pretty much bullet proof (dont try it though )

It's true. If you let the battery die completely, it won't charge anymore. It happened to me. Now I'm waiting for my ebay-bought wall charger for my battery. I just hope that when i manage to charge it, my hd2 still funtions. Cuz letting the battery die while on nand android may cause your nand to get corrupted. Then, you can't even access the bootloader.

Well if that was the case and you was faced with no power then you would simply use a battery charging dock.
So worst case you would be buying a cheap charger.

Hi, this is my sad history, a friend of mine give me a bricked tmous, he didn't told me how he bricked it. The TMOUS didn't start it was dead, no led when charging, all dead.
So, I put the tmous in a plastic bag and put it in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes and it was working again, I try to install custom roms, HLSP, MAGLDR, android although the installation was successful the phone got stuck in the stick together or the htc initial screen. I noticed that after some time the tmous stopped working, so I put it in the refrigerator for 15 minutes and it was working again. However, when I tried to flash a stock rom from the SD card I got the radio fail error so, I suppose that the brick was caused by a bad radio flash, so I tried another rom specifically RUU_Leo_1_5_TMOUS_2.10.531.0_Radio_Signed_15.34.50.07U_2.08.50.08_2_Ship . When I did that I had no radio fail. And installed HLSP, MAGLDR, android and it worked!!! But…. After some use the phone freezes. The phone only work when I put it in the refrigerator for some time, the funny thing is that when I check the radio version in android the version is ok X.XX.50.XX, I have reception and the wifi works right. Other funny thing I found is that Android starts a little bit faster; I know that because I have another TMous with the same android version. I don’t know why the tmous overhead and crash maybe the bad flash overclocked the processor, but is only a guess.
I hope this history can help somebody or give a clue about how to unbrick these devices.
PS. I run Task29 several times in the phone it didn’t affect at all.
what's the logic for leaving it in the fridge for 20min? Wouldn't you get moisture build up inside the hardware??
I wouldn't want any kind of liquid to come near sensitive components in there.

Does it get hot?
Maybe its overheating(some android roms come with an overclocked kernel) or your cpu is damaged.
Try no frills cpu control to underclock it!

LOL maybe I'll try
sounds like a bad battery.
When the battery gets some moisture it can act funny afterward and overheat or cause stability issues.
Try ordering/using a different battery and see how it does.
I think it's overheating of cpu. I don't know exactly, but i suppose it should be some kind of cooler which for some reasons do not fully cover the cpu...

Yeah I thought that too. Is possible that a bad flash damaged the processor??? If that is the case, is there a way to fix it?? I don’t know, adding something to avoid the processor overheat or something.
Well let me start by stating the obvious question that I have to ask lol whats with sticking it in the fridge? I never heard anyone do that lol now all the joke aside. Your assumption of overheating due to failed proc could be correct. Why don't you ask your friend what he did and the max scale frequency he used to OC it and for how long?
I mean if you OC you are in danger of frying the SoC due to heat as you might know from middle school when things are hot they expend and when its cool they contract. So this consent extend/contract cycle has impact and can fry or crack the circuit in long run thus limiting the life expectancy. As depending on the OC scale frequency and duration the ProcIE will slowly break down the chip cause vibration on int as byproduct is heat. As you may know that not all chips are created equal as it depends on the defect rate of the wafer.
Best you can do is sell it on craigslist or ebay "AS IS". ATM replacing the SoC and the whole hassle would be more than the actual street price of the device which you can get mint condition.

Far as the device goes if it has physical defect there is nothing you can do other than replace it. I mean if it was completely bricked this you wouldn't even be able to access it only way to do it is dump it via jTAG. As it powers on and you are able to access it I am guessing it could be hardware problem which could have started from OC or simply inferior device got though HTC-HQ. As I said if its SoC then replacing it will be more than its worth and not worth salvaging as you can get another one.

This guy here had sucess with solding the cpu back on and making the heatspreat better...maybe you got that kind of luck too
I used defy before, i worked very well, now I tried atrix, i found the phone is very hot in hand even just browse the internet.
I open the battery door, it seems the hot is not from battery, it is from the low part of the phone, is this normal? It feels uncomfortable to hold such a hot device.
Dual core processor gets hot when under load. It's normal that the Atrix runs hot when under load. Think of it this way.........you'll love it in the winter when you will play pocket data all the time to feel the warmth!
If the temperature worries you, install an app to monitor it.
All those mega hertz generate heat.. You are feeling the after effects of power flowing through the processor.. This aint some silly little flip phone son.
Mine stays relatively cool until I play Angry Birds or go for a drive using satnav and streaming internet radio. Then it gets a tad warm!
"This aint some silly little flip phone son" - I lolled hard.
Lol because it's the hottest phone on market

The hottest my phone ever gets is about 62 degrees on the CPU. As long as it doesn't get hotter than that, you should be good.
Use this to monitor temps: https://market.android.com/details?id=org.alldroid.apps.tempmonitorlite
try removing ur memory card and then use ur phone, this worked for me. and little bit of heat is normal
uhm last night i was laying down about to go to bed and i layed my arm on my phone and it was so hot, hotter than my alienware gets xD ive never had a phone or this phone get this hot, it was just charging and such.
Seems like GB update really put that second core to good use. Mine keeps frying my balls from my pocket now.

LOL, cant imagine how hot mine would be since i am on froyo still and its this hot.
I notice it gets hot after GB update ... especially when playing games and connecing to TV via HDMI .. hope official 2.3 update solve this
Maybe it isnt a problem. Desktop Video Cards have a temp limit of 105C.
Because it's a superphone!
after GB update it doesnt get AS hot.

This happens to me when I pass out on my phone drunk... I typically wake up in the middle of the night to my phone burning my back and a terrible headache. So I go grab some water, plug up my phone, PTFO again.

Agreed, advertise it as "Drunk-Friendly"...
On second thought, that seems like something from an info-commercial. So we should definitely only be charged 19.95!
Mine still on froyo, doesn't get too hot.
Im on froyo still, no noticeable heat

what has memory card got to do?
can you explain?
After having my phone for around a month, I (yesterday) decided to flip the switch and flashed myself cm10.1 and the latest franco kernel. Just now, I reached to pick up my phone (after letting it idle for around an hour and a half in my pocket), and burned my fingers. The thing is running at 46.5c when the highest it used to get for me was maybe 40-42 (watching a movie, or charging).
What do you guys think the cause is, and my best way for fixing (I dont want to go back to stock, but I will if I have to).
Thanks,

your device isnt overheating nor did it burn your fingers. human body temp is 37C, and it was sitting in your pocket at that temp, insulated, keeping warm. 46.5C will not burn you, ever. it could feel warm because the heat is escaping from the glass back to cool off. thats what its supposed to do. you have a quad core device, it WILL get warm.

is this a serious statement or sarcasm? lol.
while charging the battery can get hot, and the device can get really warm, especially if its being used at the slightest bit. besides, what is overheated, i mean what temp does it reach, battery and cpu?

my phone is currently charging and I'm posting this via phone.. so this is in no way sarcasm . it's showing battery temperature as 39 degree Celsius ( checked through *#*#4636#*#*) .. my fingers can feel the heat while I type this... though the heat is not too high but it's not negligible also.

think about this.. your body is 37C. 39C is a bump warmer. since your fingers are extremeties, they will be slightly cooler than the rest of your body. since they are a little cooler, your phone will feel warmer. but in reality, your battery temp is just normal, even relatively cool for being on the charger and being used.

Okay, I didn't mean literally 'burn', you're right. My point was that I picked it up and was shocked (figuratively ) by how hot it was.
Again, for the last entire month my phone (on stock) has never reached near this temperature before, even when It was actively running.
[Oh and jacket pocket, it wasnt on me. My point was that it was in a cool, dry, place not charging, and I wasnt using it].

its still a normal temp. tell me, since its spring, has it gotten warmer in your area this past month?

Okay, so saying that makes me stop worrying its going to blow up (happened to my friend's moto milestone back in the day), but it's still a new occurrence to me, which cooincidentally happened right after a changed both my rom and my kernel from stock.
The office aircon is a breezy 24c no matter what day it is .
I was leaning more towards this questions, that I gathered from when i glossed over the two respective threads, but dont understand well enough to decide or check if they're relevant:
-could it be that the rom or the kernel overclocked my phone and thats why its running hotter?
-maybe theres a wake-lock (or partial lock or whatever its called), that had my phone on though it was being left alone?
-did the kernel mess with the radio so now it keeps jumping signals?
-was there an option for 'testicular irradiation' that I accidentally enabled?
Not even sure if these are the right questions to be asking. Definitely not sure what to do about it even if they are...

there could be 1000s of reasons that your device is running a little warmer today, really. it could all just be random too. as long as the battery stays below 55-60C(60C is the battery temp safety shutdown) and the cpu below 80C(95-100C is the cpu safety shutdown). you wont see those high battery or cpu temps unless your really pushing your device(cpu) or watching flash movies/playing intensive games while plugged in(battery). there are safety protocols set in your phone in case it really does overheat.

niw we just got to get you to flash trinity kernel with it
So you think that trinity kernel which runs at higher clock speeds runs cooler than Franco which runs at stock CPU speeds? Mmmkay. Sure.

um, you run it at whatever speed you want. default, it boots up at 1026mhz, with all 4 core set as minimum, and thats recent. before that, it booted up 1458mhz hotplugging, which is still slightly underclocked. just because you have a choice of raising the cpu speed to 1836mhz, doesnt mean that is the kernel default. you should learn about what youre talking about first, before you say something silly.
