After having my phone for around a month, I (yesterday) decided to flip the switch and flashed myself cm10.1 and the latest franco kernel. Just now, I reached to pick up my phone (after letting it idle for around an hour and a half in my pocket), and burned my fingers. The thing is running at 46.5c when the highest it used to get for me was maybe 40-42 (watching a movie, or charging).
What do you guys think the cause is, and my best way for fixing (I dont want to go back to stock, but I will if I have to).

your device isnt overheating nor did it burn your fingers. human body temp is 37C, and it was sitting in your pocket at that temp, insulated, keeping warm. 46.5C will not burn you, ever. it could feel warm because the heat is escaping from the glass back to cool off. thats what its supposed to do. you have a quad core device, it WILL get warm.

while charging the battery can get hot, and the device can get really warm, especially if its being used at the slightest bit. besides, what is overheated, i mean what temp does it reach, battery and cpu?

my phone is currently charging and I'm posting this via phone.. so this is in no way sarcasm . it's showing battery temperature as 39 degree Celsius ( checked through *#*#4636#*#*) .. my fingers can feel the heat while I type this... though the heat is not too high but it's not negligible also.

think about this.. your body is 37C. 39C is a bump warmer. since your fingers are extremeties, they will be slightly cooler than the rest of your body. since they are a little cooler, your phone will feel warmer. but in reality, your battery temp is just normal, even relatively cool for being on the charger and being used.

Okay, I didn't mean literally 'burn', you're right. My point was that I picked it up and was shocked (figuratively ) by how hot it was.
Again, for the last entire month my phone (on stock) has never reached near this temperature before, even when It was actively running.
[Oh and jacket pocket, it wasnt on me. My point was that it was in a cool, dry, place not charging, and I wasnt using it].

Okay, so saying that makes me stop worrying its going to blow up (happened to my friend's moto milestone back in the day), but it's still a new occurrence to me, which cooincidentally happened right after a changed both my rom and my kernel from stock.
The office aircon is a breezy 24c no matter what day it is .
I was leaning more towards this questions, that I gathered from when i glossed over the two respective threads, but dont understand well enough to decide or check if they're relevant:
-could it be that the rom or the kernel overclocked my phone and thats why its running hotter?
-maybe theres a wake-lock (or partial lock or whatever its called), that had my phone on though it was being left alone?
-did the kernel mess with the radio so now it keeps jumping signals?
-was there an option for 'testicular irradiation' that I accidentally enabled?
Not even sure if these are the right questions to be asking. Definitely not sure what to do about it even if they are...

there could be 1000s of reasons that your device is running a little warmer today, really. it could all just be random too. as long as the battery stays below 55-60C(60C is the battery temp safety shutdown) and the cpu below 80C(95-100C is the cpu safety shutdown). you wont see those high battery or cpu temps unless your really pushing your device(cpu) or watching flash movies/playing intensive games while plugged in(battery). there are safety protocols set in your phone in case it really does overheat.

mine was also same it quickly reaches above +45c though CUP can handle 100c or battery can handle 60c but i can't hold it in my hand i feel so uncomfortable so planing to put cover on it :fingers-crossed:
There are some screen shot how quickly it get hot with just 5min of facebook. one thing i have under-volt it to 687.5mv.

Yes that's why I haven't put it yet. But I just flash rosbenjelly heating just wipe out .I am looking for it for long time and finally I got it so nexus 4 heating flash rosbenjelly is solution.

um, you run it at whatever speed you want. default, it boots up at 1026mhz, with all 4 core set as minimum, and thats recent. before that, it booted up 1458mhz hotplugging, which is still slightly underclocked. just because you have a choice of raising the cpu speed to 1836mhz, doesnt mean that is the kernel default. you should learn about what youre talking about first, before you say something silly.

Yes I did it and it's cool can we add pie control as in PA 3.15 by removing navigation bar shortcut and status bar.

What does the phone say the battery temp is?
the nexus is good up to 140 degrees and operates at 90 to 110 on average.hope that helps

mine operates at 80-85 degrees Farenheit. thats with the UV @ stock speed.
Mine gets pretty warm when charging up, but other than that seems fine.
I've never experianced it reaching a temp that I would class as 'extremely hot' but then that's pretty subjective.
mine only get extremely hot when i'm charging and listening to last.fm at the same time, but i don't a seidio 1600mah battery, so that could be causing it too...
30C here while idle and not charging, 33C if charging by USB. I guess it goes up to about 40C when plugged into a wall charger.
It does get hotter after playing games on it for a while, though.
on a road trip about 4 hours away from me, i had the navigation, music player, trapster, and lastfm was "scrobbling" in the background. Mine was so hot that i couldn't really hold it in my hand. so i did a dumb thing and held it out the window. luckily i didn't drop it. I've never seen a phone get that hot before either. didn't get a temp as this is my first android phone and didn't know how to at the time. but definitely hotter than 100.
Er... if it was hotter than 100C, then you'd have gotten first-degree burns at least on your hand, so I doubt it. And can't you Yanks get on with the time and start using Celsius over Fahrenheit?

So use setcpu and use the profiles...that keeps my phone nice and cool during charging/sleeping modes.

define overheating. i push my ns to over 110F all the time. but that is by choice. if its hitting over 110 by itself, then its overheating. if its in the 90's then its not overheating. it does tend to get hot when plugged in and using the phone, especially when gaming or watching flash video.
does it need to be defined? I mean I can clearly feel that the device is pretty warm? So when I charge it I should turn off wifi, bluetoofs and kill all aps? If thats true when how my friend manages to play games while charging NS and get no heat at all, definetly something with the hardware is fcuked up

feeling warm to your hands is relative. that is not a temp indicator. try this experiment. get a cup of room temp water, a cup of ice water, and a cup of warm water. put one hand in the ice water, the other in the warm water for 1 minute. then put both hands in the room temp water at the same time. the hand that was in the ice water will feel like the room temp water is hot, the hand in the warm water will feel like the room temp water is cold. you will not believe the outcome, almost like your senses are deceiving you. clearly both hands are in the room temp water, yet both hand feel a differnt temperature
there are apps that will give you your phones battery temp, like secpu has a battery temperature monitor. that will be a little more accurate than what your hands are telling you. whenever you use your phone, the temp will go up. the processor and battery produce heat when used. the harder you use it, the hotter it will get. especially when its plugged in because of the electricity moving(also produces heat). i hope that helps somewhat and doesnt end up confusing you

what rom and kernel. there are kernels that will do that. also, if you are undervolting/underclocking that could happen. usually a little more voltage should fix it.
about the heat again. ive gotten my phone so hot before, that it hurt holding in my hand that was when oc'd very high and benchmarking very hard. putting it in the fridge, at that point, helps

Small tip: Press *#*#*4636#*#* in your dialer and click "Battery Information" to get a temperature reading.
Mine is at 40°C now, charging.

If you are running a custom kernel, it is usually a result of too much stress on the kernel (ex: overclocking). On stock kernel, I have never had that unless my phone froze up.

If you are using the stock ROM and kernel i.e. never ROOTED your phone. Then you shouldn't be experiencing random reboots ...
Hello, I've got my Nexus 4 from this Monday but only yesterday I noticed that it warms up a little too much.
Today I tried a "Classic Stability Test" to see how much the CPU and the battery warms up and after 7-8 minutes... The phone was like lava! Battery was at 50,7 c° and the CPU at 84 c°!
With games like GTA Vice City I got like 46 Battery and 64 CPU, and this should be normal, right?
P.S. I live in Sardinia, 30 Degrees today...
lol well.... is running stability test part of your everyday routine, and something you require to be able to do with your phone? thats like putting a brick on your gas pedal with the car in neutral and getting a little bit worried that the engine temp is rising.
on a more serious note, 64* is fine, more than fine for every day use. games like gta will probably stress your phone as much as anything youd do on a regular basis, even nova 3. mainly because gta optimization sucks, so it still strains your cpu as much as games with better graphics. 84* is getting up there, but lg didnt add a thermal shutdown limit just for the hell of it. you havent hit it, so you havent damaged anything.

In all honesty, I have no idea what the limit is for the battery, I don't even care about this "too hot" nonsense, you should have seen the amount of threads we had on here a few months ago. I do know that 80* is pretty warm for the CPU, but still pretty far from even beginning to damage anything. The thermal shutdown for the CPU is 100*.I don't worry about battery temps, I've left my phones in my car on a hot summer day and it pretty much burned me when I picked it up.... everything was fine. Is that kind of stuff good for it? no. If someone snuck in my car, and brought it into my house and it was completely cooled before I touched it, could I notice that something was funky with my battery? hell no, any difference from any kind of battery abuse on any of my phones has been completely in-perceivable.
Brand new nexus 4 batteries on ebay are really easy to find. And cheap (all things considered). At 40$ a pop, I'll pay that a year and a half later than letting some kind of OCD drive me insane lol, To add fuel to this overheating scare everyone has, I've had my thermal throttle completely disabled since I got my phone, 6 months ago.

That doesn't mean anything is wrong. I dare you to open up your computer right now, flip it off, pull off the heatsink and touch the processor. You will get burned. But that's how it runs, and you never would have known if you didn't feel the heat coming through the case or touched it for yourself.
Sorry for the rant, but yeah, your good and in the clear... long ways to go before you cause damage lol

dont be. there is a lot of misinformed people out there, that just dont know, that publish blogs and posts that end up scaring people for no reason. the thing with the n4 is the "being able to feel the heat", thats what freaks out many. its all because of the glass. my other devices(galaxy nexus and nexus 7) get much warmer than my n4, but you cant feel the heat because of the plastic backs.

OK, Maybe it's the game bad programmed but this can't be "normal".
I've 15 days for ask for a new one, star should i do?
P.s. I just coocked the CPU of my PC like 1 year ago, it works but it got some damages. I really don't want to burn anything else

its hot, but could be normal, especially while playing cpu and gpu intensive games. i play lots on my n7, and i can reach 85C easily when gaming. so its not out of reason. the safety is 100C for cpu, when the device shuts itself down to cool off. out of curiousity, were you plugged in?

the overheating temp for battery is over 60C and cpu is more than 100C.Funny my N4 can rungta vice city just fine.i played it for 15 or 20 minutes and the temp was 48C but idk the cpu temp

i noticed my phone was getting a little hot while i had the navagtion app going.
im using the S4 flip cover and right under the back camera, where it says Samsung - I felt the phone getting hot.
Anyone experience this?

yep i think gpu too because when i play for some time some big games its so close to hurt the finger on the screen side too

According to the manual you shouldn't be using the phone at all when charging
Loool really? Its always under charge when i play or the battery drops in 2 hours i disconnect sometime when it become too hot

Using while charging is fine unless it is overheating.
The reason it's recommended not to use the phone while charging is because it reaches high temperatures much faster and so is more likely to overheat causing hardware problems
I personally don't game while charging since this phone (especially i9505) gets really hot really fast

yes i know that heating its very rapid while under charge..expecially now that its so hot during day and cant dissipate...in may when i bought s4 had less problem
i think i must think to buy an extended battery to play more than 2 hours hehehe are they already on stores?
Almost every good phone gets hot now and then. My rooted S4 barely gets hot. I mean i flashed a great rom (omega rom) and flashed an amazing kernel (perseus) and played a bit with cpu voltages and i undervolted my cpu and it barely gets hot , and when it does , it does not get very hot .

i tryed to underclock processors but,maybe i just made a mistake, i saw the battery drop much faster...i setted max speed at 1.2 last time but never tried again
OMG, OMG, OMG, finally!!!!:victory:
I thought I was going crazy, but YES, the phone gets unusualy hot just below the camera.
I noticed this right after performing the Apps2SD update, and since then have been freaking out!
I am afraid that constant heating and cooling of this kind can damage the sensitive parts inside,
so I have been limiting my use of the phone in the last few days.
People, this is not normal. Somebody needs to contact Samsung.
There must be a software patch for this...?!

Hi,
Soon to be RC here, and my first contribution to the nexus 4 world is an attempt to convince you that your nexus 4 isn't overheating.
Some of you replied to my first thread here about what should i worry about in the nexus 4. Some replied that it has a battery drain... that i fixed by removing the google search bar... Others have said that it has overheating issues which some users are scared of.
I'm here to show you why you shouldn't be scared at all.
I was playing Fast And Furious 6: The Game, and 5 minutes later when i ran out of car gas, i closed the game and directly opened Trickster MOD app to see the temperatures of the phone... yes temperatureS.
You'll notice there are two temps in this app: Battery Temp and CPU Temp.
The one you used to check on older devices is Battery Temp, because older devices didn't have CPU Temp sensor.
When i first opened Trickster MOD it showed this:
Battery Temp: 42°C
CPU Temp: 56°C
And then seconds later, the CPU Temp dropped to 49°C and stayed at 49-50°C.
But Battery Temp was decreasing slowly from 42°C to 38°C in about 5 minutes.
Now the reason for the fast CPU Temp drop is that when the CPU is busy, there is so much electricity running through it, it generates heat. But when the CPU is practically resting, the electricity running through it is much less, hence, the Temp drop, which is normal. And also, if you're using a kernel that supports turning off the 3 other CPUs when not in heavy use, then it's better because the less CPU cores active, the less heat.
So the main thing you should be scared of is the Battery Temp... But don't be, because Android is smart:
Android has a built in overheating system which does certain steps to avoid hardware heating damage, if the phone overheats, it takes some steps:
1- If charging, it stops charging to reduce Battery Temp.
2- Reduces CPU speed automatically to make less electrical current run through the CPU, thus reducing CPU Temp.
3- If both of the above failed to get out of the overheat situation, it shuts down the phone.
So if you were playing a big game, and the phone heats up... keep playing that game, android will take care of the rest

But the question still remains: if I'm charging the phone using the wall charger, and I put it on the wireless charger, will it blow up?
Well, yeah. This is what we have been trying to say since the Nexus 4 came on the market.

the use of the word overheats. its not overheating. its heating up with use, which is the normal way things work. by using overheating, you make it still sound like an issue.

But, Do you think theres a chance the glass back will crack if the phone is at its hottest point(right before it shuts down itself)?
Because I remember that I've read these horror stories before I bought the N4, don't really know if its bad luck or not.

if you drop it in cold water, or stick it into a good freezer at that point, then yes. otherwise, probably not unless it get cooled down extremely fast.

Glass doesn't break/crack because of heat, glass breaks because of the fast temperature variation... in this case 2-4°C max is the variation, so no

That is done by either a file like thermald or on a hardware level.
It's like saying windows controls the cooling on your pc.
A device example would be the rlod. Lower level stuff. Android isn't even loaded.

you're right, it's not "coded" into android... but so far every android build i've seen has that security system.
but that's not the point, the point of this thread is to stop N4 users from posting "overheating issue" posts, and not worry anymore.

At best ( which I doubt) they are children that simply don't know much.
But the truth is they are plenty of fools and it will never stop. The level of stupidity I have seen related to this discussion is appalling.
Only way it will stop if it becomes taboo. One thread in general and any new threads about it get closed down and deleted.
Actually it is android that controls temperature throttling. Or to be more precise the android kernel. Which reads the thermald file for it's Max CPU temperature.
There are also hardware cut offs 100°Cpu and 60° battery which will power off the phone.
These temperatures are what I consider overheated. Anything below or throttling is to prevent your device from overheating
