[Q] Playing Games On Nexus 7 Although It's Hot?

Just got myself a Nexus 7 with 3G and Wifi about 3 weeks ago. Overall this is a great tablet and I love it. But playing games on this device will make it heats up quite abit on the back left bottom corner. I knw that every devices nowadays will heat up when playing games, surfing the web or even using mobile data.
And I was wondering, do any of you guys still play games on it when the device gets warm or in between warm or hot? I feel a lil disappointed because the Nexus 7's gaming experience and performance was good but the only downside is it gets warm in about 15 mins and and gets warmer at 30 mins of playing games ( high end games like Dead Trigger etc. ). And it's a pity that I cannot enjoy longer hours of gaming on this device ( which is 1 of the reasons I bought it ).
And also I wanted to ask, can anyone pls tell me how warm or hot is your device when playing games? What I mean was let's say I was playing a high end game and the temperature of the tablet is around 50 c. To me, I might feel that it's a little too hot but to others, they might feel that it's jus warm. Would greatly appreciate all of your answers and advises.

It's perfectly normal for a device to heat up when it has to be at a higher clock speed to crunch high levels of data.
This happens to pc's all the time, we dont feel it cuz all the hardware is in a case being cooled by fans. Laptops too, try gaming with a macbook pro on your lap, i swear hard boiled eggs could come out by the end of it. lol! An ipad or even much inferior in performance tablets to the n7 do heat up. Nevertheless things are improving, nowadays processors are getting more power efficient which translates to less heat for the amout of processing power they have, which is much much more compared to the past. Mayb in the future we'll have something with the processing power of a mainframe but as cold as the n7 currently is, then mayb it can be downclocked and downvolted to levels where its as cold as a can of coke while retaining reasonable performance, but it wont happen today...
Yea, the n7 does get warm but if it really bothers you it can be solved if you use a thick sturdy case with it... I use it for that reason, also it seems to prevent screen lift in my case, not to mention protection against accidents =>

50°C isn't very hot, mine gets that hot during normal usage and it can go much higher.

LoL! Anyway, thank you so much for the reply and explaining. I'd never knew that the ipad would heat up too haha. Do you think I should underclock my device? Well, been trying to use a case but on the opposite side am afraid that the case would trap heat inside the device itself. But Im using it anyway lol... And I have to agree with you cases really do help alot in protection against accidents.

I see. Mine would be about 45-50 c during daily use and gaming. But 1 thing I do notice is that the device is actually not warm at all when I stream and watch videos using the youtube app. Anyway, thanks!.

[Q] Overheating Problems [franco kernel | cm 10.1]

After having my phone for around a month, I (yesterday) decided to flip the switch and flashed myself cm10.1 and the latest franco kernel. Just now, I reached to pick up my phone (after letting it idle for around an hour and a half in my pocket), and burned my fingers. The thing is running at 46.5c when the highest it used to get for me was maybe 40-42 (watching a movie, or charging).
What do you guys think the cause is, and my best way for fixing (I dont want to go back to stock, but I will if I have to).

your device isnt overheating nor did it burn your fingers. human body temp is 37C, and it was sitting in your pocket at that temp, insulated, keeping warm. 46.5C will not burn you, ever. it could feel warm because the heat is escaping from the glass back to cool off. thats what its supposed to do. you have a quad core device, it WILL get warm.

is this a serious statement or sarcasm? lol.
while charging the battery can get hot, and the device can get really warm, especially if its being used at the slightest bit. besides, what is overheated, i mean what temp does it reach, battery and cpu?

my phone is currently charging and I'm posting this via phone.. so this is in no way sarcasm . it's showing battery temperature as 39 degree Celsius ( checked through *#*#4636#*#*) .. my fingers can feel the heat while I type this... though the heat is not too high but it's not negligible also.

think about this.. your body is 37C. 39C is a bump warmer. since your fingers are extremeties, they will be slightly cooler than the rest of your body. since they are a little cooler, your phone will feel warmer. but in reality, your battery temp is just normal, even relatively cool for being on the charger and being used.

Okay, I didn't mean literally 'burn', you're right. My point was that I picked it up and was shocked (figuratively ) by how hot it was.
Again, for the last entire month my phone (on stock) has never reached near this temperature before, even when It was actively running.
[Oh and jacket pocket, it wasnt on me. My point was that it was in a cool, dry, place not charging, and I wasnt using it].

its still a normal temp. tell me, since its spring, has it gotten warmer in your area this past month?

Okay, so saying that makes me stop worrying its going to blow up (happened to my friend's moto milestone back in the day), but it's still a new occurrence to me, which cooincidentally happened right after a changed both my rom and my kernel from stock.
The office aircon is a breezy 24c no matter what day it is .
I was leaning more towards this questions, that I gathered from when i glossed over the two respective threads, but dont understand well enough to decide or check if they're relevant:
-could it be that the rom or the kernel overclocked my phone and thats why its running hotter?
-maybe theres a wake-lock (or partial lock or whatever its called), that had my phone on though it was being left alone?
-did the kernel mess with the radio so now it keeps jumping signals?
-was there an option for 'testicular irradiation' that I accidentally enabled?
Not even sure if these are the right questions to be asking. Definitely not sure what to do about it even if they are...

there could be 1000s of reasons that your device is running a little warmer today, really. it could all just be random too. as long as the battery stays below 55-60C(60C is the battery temp safety shutdown) and the cpu below 80C(95-100C is the cpu safety shutdown). you wont see those high battery or cpu temps unless your really pushing your device(cpu) or watching flash movies/playing intensive games while plugged in(battery). there are safety protocols set in your phone in case it really does overheat.

mine was also same it quickly reaches above +45c though CUP can handle 100c or battery can handle 60c but i can't hold it in my hand i feel so uncomfortable so planing to put cover on it :fingers-crossed:
There are some screen shot how quickly it get hot with just 5min of facebook. one thing i have under-volt it to 687.5mv.

Yes that's why I haven't put it yet. But I just flash rosbenjelly heating just wipe out .I am looking for it for long time and finally I got it so nexus 4 heating flash rosbenjelly is solution.

um, you run it at whatever speed you want. default, it boots up at 1026mhz, with all 4 core set as minimum, and thats recent. before that, it booted up 1458mhz hotplugging, which is still slightly underclocked. just because you have a choice of raising the cpu speed to 1836mhz, doesnt mean that is the kernel default. you should learn about what youre talking about first, before you say something silly.

Yes I did it and it's cool can we add pie control as in PA 3.15 by removing navigation bar shortcut and status bar.

Hi,
Soon to be RC here, and my first contribution to the nexus 4 world is an attempt to convince you that your nexus 4 isn't overheating.
Some of you replied to my first thread here about what should i worry about in the nexus 4. Some replied that it has a battery drain... that i fixed by removing the google search bar... Others have said that it has overheating issues which some users are scared of.
I'm here to show you why you shouldn't be scared at all.
I was playing Fast And Furious 6: The Game, and 5 minutes later when i ran out of car gas, i closed the game and directly opened Trickster MOD app to see the temperatures of the phone... yes temperatureS.
You'll notice there are two temps in this app: Battery Temp and CPU Temp.
The one you used to check on older devices is Battery Temp, because older devices didn't have CPU Temp sensor.
When i first opened Trickster MOD it showed this:
Battery Temp: 42°C
CPU Temp: 56°C
And then seconds later, the CPU Temp dropped to 49°C and stayed at 49-50°C.
But Battery Temp was decreasing slowly from 42°C to 38°C in about 5 minutes.
Now the reason for the fast CPU Temp drop is that when the CPU is busy, there is so much electricity running through it, it generates heat. But when the CPU is practically resting, the electricity running through it is much less, hence, the Temp drop, which is normal. And also, if you're using a kernel that supports turning off the 3 other CPUs when not in heavy use, then it's better because the less CPU cores active, the less heat.
So the main thing you should be scared of is the Battery Temp... But don't be, because Android is smart:
Android has a built in overheating system which does certain steps to avoid hardware heating damage, if the phone overheats, it takes some steps:
1- If charging, it stops charging to reduce Battery Temp.
2- Reduces CPU speed automatically to make less electrical current run through the CPU, thus reducing CPU Temp.
3- If both of the above failed to get out of the overheat situation, it shuts down the phone.
So if you were playing a big game, and the phone heats up... keep playing that game, android will take care of the rest

But the question still remains: if I'm charging the phone using the wall charger, and I put it on the wireless charger, will it blow up?

Well, yeah. This is what we have been trying to say since the Nexus 4 came on the market.

the use of the word overheats. its not overheating. its heating up with use, which is the normal way things work. by using overheating, you make it still sound like an issue.

But, Do you think theres a chance the glass back will crack if the phone is at its hottest point(right before it shuts down itself)?
Because I remember that I've read these horror stories before I bought the N4, don't really know if its bad luck or not.

if you drop it in cold water, or stick it into a good freezer at that point, then yes. otherwise, probably not unless it get cooled down extremely fast.

Glass doesn't break/crack because of heat, glass breaks because of the fast temperature variation... in this case 2-4°C max is the variation, so no

Thats true, thanks for clearing it up!

Also android itself doesn't have anything built into it for thermals.
That is done by either a file like thermald or on a hardware level.
It's like saying windows controls the cooling on your pc.
A device example would be the rlod. Lower level stuff. Android isn't even loaded.

you're right, it's not "coded" into android... but so far every android build i've seen has that security system.
but that's not the point, the point of this thread is to stop N4 users from posting "overheating issue" posts, and not worry anymore.

But the truth is they are plenty of fools and it will never stop. The level of stupidity I have seen related to this discussion is appalling.
Only way it will stop if it becomes taboo. One thread in general and any new threads about it get closed down and deleted.

Actually it is android that controls temperature throttling. Or to be more precise the android kernel. Which reads the thermald file for it's Max CPU temperature.
There are also hardware cut offs 100°Cpu and 60° battery which will power off the phone.
These temperatures are what I consider overheated. Anything below or throttling is to prevent your device from overheating

[Q] LG G2 Operating Temperatures

Ok, I searched the forum about this topic and didn't really find anything answering my questions. I'm currently coming from a Droid RAZR and it ran hot to say the least. I can't get a straight answer on this phone's operating temperatures and I'm trying to determine whether to put a thick case on or not(with almost no bezel, I'm paranoid it will break on first drop). From what I've read, about 60% of people aren't reporting very much heat. The other 40% say there is a huge problem and most have had to replace their phones thinking it was a defect.
When it came to my RAZR, at rest with a case on, battery temperature would sit at just under 87 F. Under heavy use, I've hit over 124 F. Without a case, 83 F, the highest I've hit is just under 117 F. Extremely significant when you can't remove the battery and swap it out. I believe that it led to it's premature failure. I want to avoid that with this phone.
Is anybody keeping track of their phone and battery temperatures?
What apps and/or widgits do you use?
What is the normal at rest temperature?
What is the heavy use temperature?

I don't keep track of it. However this phone does get really hot (uncomfortable to hold) when playing games. With Tpu cases this was less noticeable. But lately I installed skinomi stickers for back protector, and it always bother me when it gets hot this way.
That being said, normal uses such as Internet, music, YouTube, xda, camera.... The phone only becomes slightly warm.

I keep wondering why no one makes cases that help dissipate heat, for how hot modern phones get! If anything, most cases insulate the phone and make them get even hotter!

Admittedly, I'm not a gamer but the only times I've felt the device get hot enough to register with the Incipio Feather case were: 1) after a wipe/flash, and all my apps were downloading again from the Play Store and 2) when wiping and the device was plugged into the wall charger (CPU temp was around 100 degrees) - other than these 2 instances, I've never felt heat thru my Feather case.

The case I had been using with the RAZR was a TPU hybrid. I also went to a skin because of the heat. I don't think I cando that with this phone. I'm too clumsy.

I was actually looking at getting the dual pro. Thanks for the feedback. Exactly the type I'm looking for.

Honestly i just replaced my phone due to overheating issues. It would literally shut down or restart just running the camera for too long. After reading some other reports in the forums I decided to send it in and get a replacement. My new one came in yesterday and absolutely no overheating issues. Even can run antutu without a reboot (my other G2 would reboot about 14% in). So from my experience there was a batch that had some thermal issues... I got mine the first day it came out. Loving this second one

I use Battery and CPU-Z to check battery temps. Even with over an hour of straight gaming, I have yet to see it get above 98F. I constanty run the screen at 80% brightness as well, as that can be a contributing factor. The games I have played this long with are Riptide GP and Madden 25.
You really cant feel any heat through this case, and hand temps are too subjective anyway.

yeah, especially while gaming.. and it's not the battery drain that concerns me, the heat is ridiculous for long term gaming..
and slapping a case would be good for your hand but not for your phone
plus there's not one manufacturer that make cases for heavy gaming yet..
i wonder what the case would look like if it was made for dissapating heat.. probably has a lot of thermal pipelines built in that would be awesome..

One thing I've noticed from people's screenshots is that the screen doesn't use that much battery. My RAZR would sometimes draw 46%. I'm sure that also contributed to the heat. smh.

lol, I've actually thought about making a case like that, then I realized if there was a way to burn myself, I'd find it.

I'm currently in the design step of a case that uses tubing to disperse heat at the top corners of the phone to cool it down and keep heat away from the hand.
If you'd like to give input shoot me a pm and we can discuss it further.
OnT: I very rarely pass 24c on mine, then again I never game on my phone either. Highest I've hit was 42c during some testing.

Get the app CpuTemp from play store, it overlays cpu temp while you're doing whatever, enable only the top two options, enable overlay and start on boot.
Then get stability test app and run the first option at top, classic test.
Then report back here with your temp after you do the stress test for about 27 seconds. I hit 66c after 27 seconds.
Curious to see what everyone else hits.

Is overheating an issue when wifi tethering? I want to use this thing for desktop PC games and downloads; does it overheat after hours and hours of intense wifi hotspot use?

I have used it for a couple hours and it gets warm. Not warm enough for me to worry about checking the temperature.

I have made the tests , and i get 72 °C after 1:20 secs running the standard test. About 35 °C in idle,and about 50-55 °C when i am using the phone for facebook,browser,youtube. Is this ok? (These are Cpu Temps).

My G2 gets also around 55°C when using the phone normally (youtube, browser, etc.) and over 67-68°C while gaming. I think this is normal for a high frequency 4 cores CPU. Right?

Hey, I received my LG G2 yesterday and i've been experiencing cpu temperatures of:
42-48C being idle
52-59C during browsing, facebook, viber etc
62-64C when on youtube (after the first 5 seconds)
65C when on gps
As for the stress test after 1:20 and up to 20:00 it was around 72-74 C
The phone feels hot all the time though with no apparent reason.
Screen brightness is set to 30% all the time, 3g connection is off and I only keep Wi-fi on. I even tried turning off features like gestures, I don't know if it is of any relevance.
Of course I haven't trying gaming yet, since I'm not really interested in it, but I want my smartphone to be functional without burning up.
Should I return it and ask for a replacement? Or is it an issue with LG G2 or Snapdragon 800 generally? Will it be a waste of time?

Overheating

Hello everyone
Yesterday I received my Moto X pure Edition, after 3 hour of charge I transfer all of my files and stuff from my old Nexus 5. After a few minutes of use I noticed that the phone started to overheat excessively (110 farenheit) and the battery only lasted 3 hours, I did a complete reset of the phone but the same result overheat after 15 minutes of use.
I replaced/updated the play services software and same thing.
Someone has the same problem???
Please Advice...

Arnt u glad its not the 810 lolol.. But in all seriousness i get about 4-5 hrs ost, depending what i do yes my phone gets hot but thats normal..
It all depends what ur doing when ur phone gets hot, are u watching videos.. Playing games.. Multitasking

Mine was 95-100° doing literally nothing but texting or on the web. Mine is going back asap. Gets way too hot and nothing special about it

Where did you buy the phone???

If you were setting up your phone of course it will get hot. After that it should settle down unless rogue app or games.

Had mine a couple days now, no heat issues.

and i was web browsing, facebook and texting and it was almost 100 degrees! Note 4 doing same things 85 ish

Mine also seems to heat up greatly for no apparent reason. Please tell me this isn't some kind of defect.

I honestly don't think it is. I had 3 G4s and they were all hot and glitchy. I honestly think it is the sd808. Back when I called Samsung about exchanged a note 4 developer edition the guy told me that snapdragon 808/810 were heat prone and they would not be using them for upcoming phones. That was before it was publicly known. I still think there is something awry with their latest processors. Even late batch sd805 had heat issues. My note 5 had zero signs of heat and my note 4 you really have to push to get hot. The g4 & moto x got hot texting or web browsing! I don't get it. Can't be a confidence that both are 808 processors and heat demons

I don't understand how it's so hard for them to make a chip not overheat. I mean this isn't the first, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th generation of chips. Perhaps custom kernels will allow us to throttle better?

Cool here except when turbo charging or navigation is on.

Haven't seen one yet and mine gets hot several times a day when I'm multitasking or just playing a game.

Computers get hot, CPU's get hot, PC's and laptops have fans to keep them cool...cell phones do not. I do not believe that any cell phone will ever stay "cool" when doing CPU/GPU intensive tasks. That's just the way it is.

turbo charger will heat it up that is obvious but yes when you do stuff that uses lots of cpu/ram it will heat up a little same was with my note4 .

Mine only overheats when I am doing some heavy usage...I don't think "Overheat" is the right word, maybe just "gets warm". But over the weekend, I acquired a Samsung Galaxy S6 (in a trade for a different phone). When setting it up, it was getting hotter than the MXP ever got. I checked it with Gsam battery and it was 133 degrees and took about 30 minutes to cool down. My MXP gets hot, but cools down pretty quick.

The mine overheats just read my email, reach more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, that is definitely not normal

I know right. It doesnt. the note 5 i had run so cool it wasnt even funny and my note 4 dev ed runs pretty cool unless i do something insane on it lol

I agree that phones need a little fan or something but i disagree with any phone will stay cool the note 4 and 5 are always 10+ degrees cooler then the x or my g4 was. im telling you its the 808 chipset

Gets HOT and yes the s6 and s6 edge i had got hot too but the note 5 didnt and its same chip i think

It's the Media Scanner service. Because you added all that media from the Nexus 5 it had to be indexed. Once done, it will settle down and be OK.
This is some information I found in another thread:
"For each file and directory it finds it creates an entry in the so-called Android Media Store. For special file types like images, videos and music files it also scans for meta data like EXIF information for images and mp3 tags for music files. Applications may query the Media Store to find specific files bases on the file type or meta data. Well known applications that do so are the Gallery and the Music Player. Other applications may also do so.
The media scanner runs as a background service and is not visible to the user. "
