Did anyone else notice how the screen can be kinda grainy? its only really noticable if your kinda close to the screen and most noticible on text in a web page or something thin. Is it normal for OLEDs or is something wrong with my phone
I can at least confirm that compared to the G1, the Nex1 screen is insanely oversaturated and the contrast is really high. You might also be noticing that in many applications lazily designed for smaller screen dimensions, raster graphics are being scaled up, which causes nasty artifacting (text and pure vector apps should be okay, though).
And now that you mention it, if I hold the phone *really* close to my face, the dot patterns are a little more visible than on a non-OLED.
][
i know for a fact the oversaturation is normal. OLED displays show much more saturated colors than LCDs because of their design. Im talking specifically about the grainyness meaning how edges look kind of dotty its hard to explain with words lol. Its usually not noticible unless you hold it up close to your face or youre specifically looking for it.

Those are called pixels.. put your nose to any LCD screen and you'll see the same..
It's because some things just weren't built for the higher res screen the N1 sports compared to other Android devices, that and the screen has a significantly sharper image than any other phone I've looked at.
Yeah, you can tell some apps and widgets werent designed for hi-res, this phone is blowin me away so far though, I love my G1 and mytouch but they got nothin on this beast

You're seeing it more because of the nature of the OLED screen methinks, everything is much more pronounced, which is why it creates such a nice picture.
im asking if YOU are noticing it lol
Yea, if I look really really really really close I can sort of see it, nothing to worry about though
like how close? youre making it sound like youre using an electron microscope or something. I can begin to notice it about half a foot away!
sorry if i sound nit-picky I payed 530$ and want to make sure my phone is perfect (especially since im probably gonna void my warranty and unlock the bootloader)
If my nose is almost touching it I can see the pixels somewhat, depends what application I'm looking at though.
i can just imagine all of you guys just stilling there putting this nexus one up to your noses and having someone walk in and yell "WTF are you doing?!"
... blueman did you notice this as well or no
unfortunately my nexus one is still somewhere in between Moutain View and Vegas.
Melt, I can see what you're talking about but I don't really notice it unless I'm looking for it or like someone else said I hold it right next to my face, but I can't tell what you're freakin out about cause as a whole my display looks damn amazing.
why are people so paranoid about things?
cause these things cost 530$ + tax.
the grainyness you're seeing is probably upscaled images from 3rd party applications. Since the Droid and Nexus one both have super high res screens, some applications graphics wont fit properly, and the phone will resize them without re-rendering it.
Kinda like trying to print a 1 megapixel image on a billboard, it will turn into giant pixels.
The stock android apps should look fine though. So far I've been very pleased with the display and how things look.
hope this helps. I work a lot with graphics.

Now you got me curious. I can notice the pixel grain (especially on gradient backgrounds) at about 5" or closer. I am slightly nearsighted, though.

It's a moronic comparison of two entirely different technologies.
Google isn't paying anything to the big techno blogs sites so what do you expect?
I've seen articles ranging from explaining how Google steals all your dataz and kills your dog to how google is bribing carriers and phone manufacturers to adapt android. The only thing you should do is to utilize your own judgement and get used to tech sites being like this. This isn't going to change anytime soon.
As I understand it the phone has the pixels it says it does it just doesn't utilize them properly, it also doesn't utilize RAM properly, I think it could also utilize the 5mp camera and 1ghz processor better.
The point is that the phone seems like it was rushed to the market and I believe a lot of the problems can be addressed with software updates. I just hope Google finishes whatever is taking all of their time so that the issues can be addressed. But I do think that so many of the issues can be resolved and this phone can truly become a "superphone". The nexus is taking a lot of well deserved criticism lately but Android has the ability to respond and improve the nexus/android experience without hardware overhaul, and I believe that's very shiny silver lining...
There's always some problem with every device. The only problem with nexus one is that it has no major issues, just minor ones which are being highlighted by iPhone lovers. AMOLED is a new technology, so things are different.
so he created some stippled greyscale pictures that produce artifacts because of the way the pixels are arranged on the N1 screen.
so what? like who looks at stippled greyscale pictures using their N1 anyway?
I also took a picture of some of the status bar icons using a digital camera in macro mode and my screen does not look like his picture of the 3g icon at all.
Its all about how the eye perceives images, forget that pseudo science. The AMOLED screen on the N1 is the best screen I have seen on any phone, black levels are incredible and contrast is good.
text is readable at a smaller font size than other phones.
If the N1s screen does have faults in the implementation of AMOLED then we can expect even better screens in the future using that technology, but as of today it is the best IMHO
Ha!

To be fair, many of us do recognize the fuzziness of the text and the article explains why that is happening. Perhaps a better statement (whether or not the tone of the article supports it) would have been "Your N1 has a beautiful sharp display that wows people, but the text seems a little fuzzier than you would expect for such a nice screen. Why the difference?"
I think the text can look a lot better with the right tweaks to the text rendering code, but either they tried and didn't get it right or they simply haven't created AMOLED-specific text rendering routines yet.
I'm sorry, but I'm not seeing this fuzzines of which ye speak.
I don't see the fuzzyness either.... and I got the best vision a human has... I read the bottom smallest lines at the eye doctor....
But whatever
Edit... after closely looking at it I see on the right of words a little fuzzy look, all I got to say is.... Bwahahahaha lame, I don't give a ****... nexus one is beautiful Lmaooo picky people...
Haters gonna hate.
This is so funny. I work in a design oriented field. While I do not plan on designing on the phone (probably would if the right apps come out!), I do use it to show and review design work. This phone does everything I need it to do. If it's good enough for me and my clients I'm guessing it is good enough for most. Hate on.
I have installed SBF 1.5.2 right after I got my Atrix so I don't know if it is related to that but in my opinion the colors of the display are not vibrant / colorful compared to my HTC Desire Z (Vision/G2) and that phone has no AMOLED.
Compared to the HTC the colors all look a little bit greyer and I don't like it.
Is it possible to change that or am I the only one?
Thanks in advance.
You're comparing two different screen types. The Atrix uses TFT pentile and the Desire Z uses S-LCD. The Atrix is already known for some washed out colors like yellow.
Ah, thanks.
So it is not possible to change that with a software update like Google did in Android 2.3.3!?
I agree that the display is "not as nice" as other phones. My captivate IMO looks better.
yes the captivate is brighter but it also hurts my eyes after staring at it for a while. i wonder if there is going to be a program like galaxy tuner for the atrix. with galaxy tuner you can adjust the yellow color of the screen.

It could be possible, we just need to tear down the kernel (once it gets worked around) and play with it some. It was kinda funny though because after giving my Captivate to my GF and getting my atrix, I look at the Cappy and go "Holy crap that screen is REALLY blue"
I was surprised on the Atrix screen. The forum didn't give it justice. The characters looks very sharp. Colors are easy to the eyes and no pixels at all!

just take a look at your battery meter when it's green.
any green (like real green, not dark) text on the web shows the obvious differences between the PenTile display and a regular LCD.
IMHO the display of the Atrix is one of the worst displays in a high end phone that I have seen in the last time.
Only the resolution is great, the rest isn't really high end.
Yellow looks more like dirt and faster scrolling or movements show black shadows (e. g. in Angry Birds).
Issue resolved!
I think the crispness of the text is because of the slcd . I had a galaxy s before I bought my nexus s .. The first difference i noticed was indeed the crispness of the text, on s amoled the text always looked a bit fuzzy even with sharpnes fixes... I do think the colorurs on the s amoled screen were "richer" than on the slcd screen.
If there's anything that bothers me about my i9020, it's that I can barely read the fuzzy, vague text on the screen. I can BARELY make it out half the time.
Very jealous of you guys.
EDIT: Im quite surprised no-one realised I was joking. I think my phone's screen looks amazing.
I don't know guys. I can read all the text on my i9020 just fine. I read all my kindle books on the smallest text settings and have no issues. This apps text looks great and so is web browsing.
This phone never had the yellow washed out color that alot of people complained about either.
The few times I've seen the two phones side by side the slcd screen looked terribly washed out compared to the super amoled.
Sent from my bathroom, with toilet paper.
I have no problem reading the smallest of text on my SAMOLED Nexus S either and the pentile layout has never bothered me. In fact, side by side with a SLCD Nexus S the only way I can tell one from the other is by the black levels.
They are both very good displays.

this.
because its not that bad to the point its unreadable.
what some of you call "fuzzy" is the pentile pixel layout of the screen... (half the blue and red pixels compared to a conventional lcd screen)
see here: ars article
I personally think it's crap and can see it very clearly, it's about the only thing I don't like about my nexus one.
isn't there also a battery life issue??
i have a i9023 and my boss has a i9020, and my phone last much longer!
To be fair, certain fonts rendered in a smaller size dont look so great on SAMOLED pentile matrix screen. Like the font that comes with the matted blues theme.
Issue resolved!!!
james6392 said:
Maybe it depends on what people like. Colours on the SAMOLED do look a bit oversaturated and that pleases most people. The black is definitely deeper as well.
However, I maintain that the SLCD is a lot easier on the eyes if you do a lot of reading.
I've taken a few photos of the two phones. Both in 100% brightness. There are some weird colour artefacts which I haven't edited out. The SAMOLED seems to get a green streak whereas SLCD gets a bit of magenta. In actual usage of course, they both look white (with the SLCD being a little bit on the blue side)
BTW, the pictures where taken at exactly the same magnification. Only very minor adjustments were made to bring the phones into focus due to the difference in thickness (yes, half a millimetre does make a difference in macro photography!!).

man thats too close. is that how you read a text ? lol god help you " kidding "
i do see your point. and yes the Super amoled screen is not as clear in text as LCD. this was known for while. the advantage of the SA is deeper colors while better text reading and sharpness on SLCD.
i think they both look great. just matters of what you like most.

Thanks, that cleared. Sure looks a bit more "masculine", than I9020. Will see, when I get it to my hands...
no offense guys, the SCLCD of i9023 is so amazing. I did not realize the big difference until going out to direct sunlight.
Compare to my previous HTC desire HD which is totally hopeless under direct sunlight this is so much better, viewing angles is also a plus point for this. About the SAMOLED, I tried couple times on my friend's galaxy S, still prefer my current SCLCD

The Galaxy S2 is known to consist of many issues particularly with its screen. Although the screen technology is far more superior than the one featured on the Galaxy Note, I wanted to know if the Note has any of the following issues with its Super AMOLED HD screen--
1). Black blotches? (*#0*# Select Black; wait for your eyes to adjust; be in a complete dark setting, and assess for this)
2). Stains? (*#0*# Select Black; wait for your eyes to adjust; be in a complete dark setting, and assess for this)
3). Red Tint in Black Background? (*#0*# Select Black; wait for your eyes to adjust; be in a complete dark setting, and assess for this)
4). White-colored bleeding? (*#0*# Select Black; wait for your eyes to adjust; be in a complete dark setting, and assess for this)
5). Brightness uniformity issue? (One side darker than the other or lighter than the other, vice versa)
6). Color uniformity issue?
7). Washed out colors?
8). Lack of clarity?
9). Horizontal or Vertical lines?
10). Ghosting?
11). Circular mark?
12). Banding? (Use *#0*# to test)
13). Dead pixels? (Use *#0*# and Select White)
Above, are issues I've encountered on different S2's. Please let me know if you spot any of the above issues on your Samsung Galaxy NOTE. I really want to gather feedback on all of the above. Thank you.
I dont see any of the above issues but one issue is the white seems little bluish due to pentile matrix

Some user on another thread just posted a screenshot showing the uniformity issue where right side was darker than left.
Another issue noticed a circular mark
Bluish-tint is normal for Pentile matrix, but is the color evenly distributed?
? I haven't encountered any of the issues that you mentioned on my SGS2, and I've had it for almost 1/2 year now.
Anyways, just picked up the Note a few days ago and still customising to my liking, but so far have noticed (compared to the SGS2):
1. Banding. It's more noticeable (eg. Grey keyboard keys) compared to the SGS2.
2. Tile pattern when seeing grey background (eg. The notification bar)
Sent from my Note
Comparing to my S2, the screen is brighter at 100%, I can read better any text, but I can still see the pentile screen. Not much problem, it is not annoying as hell as was in the first galaxy, but it is there and I can't wait to note 2 with plus technology.
So, on your questions, no to all of them.
Oh, for banding, testing with this image

I can't see banding when I use full screen view on browser, but it is there if you move the image or don't see in full screent. It looks like the stock browser changes the colour to 65k when you make scrolls or something like that to be faster and smoother.
No problem for me.

Don't panic. The screen on mine is superb.
I have not looked at any lo-qual 8 or 16 bit images, which will look like so called "banding". Banding is not a technical term, but I know what you mean.
This screen is 24bit, Millions of colors. If you look at 8-16 bit images, they will show banding. On older devices, you would see nothing but banding as they were only 16bit max.
Check out this: color depth
The checkerboard pattern happens when the screen redraws graphics when you resize it.
Zooming out to see a smaller view of a web page, there is a momentary checkerboard pattern behind the image, like the pattern denoting a transparent background in Photoshop. Normal and nothing to worry about. When I think about it, my HD2 showed a blank white background in this situation, not as good as I could not distinguish a page being redrawn and a web connection error giving me a blank page.
Samsung are leaders in the field of screen technology, no? Think about it. Who makes the best TV's? OLED screens are now becoming the TV industry choice of video monitors. They often cost over $10,000. Broadcast engineers are not likely to accept lower grade technology. In fact, LCD's are on the way out.
Don't believe the hype.
This device is amazing.
You can also use *#0*# to assess for banding, although I would believe banding to be common on a phone with greater resolution. The Galaxy S didn't have banding btw, unsure if that had to do with smaller resolution.
