So, I've been very confused lately, some mornings I've been waking up to the stock alarm ringtone as opposed to the one I've selected. Everytime this happens, I've found that both the internal and external storage have been unmounted....
I instantly thought this was a bug as I couldnt work it out, until of course, I plugged my phone into my Nexus One wall charger last night, and I caught the MTP screen , which came up shortly there after - and it had unmounted my storage!
So, I'm not sure why its doing this, but after a reboot, then using the Samsung wall charger it didnt happen again.
I thought all of these chargers only feed power. I'm surprised they leave the data pegs active in the Nexus One USB plug - which has obviously confused the SGS into thinking its being plugged into a USB cable attached to a PC and unmounted the storage...

My phone just stopped connecting to my computer over USB. I went to update Fission to 1.2.1 and got stuck at trying to actually connect my phone to the computer. USB debugging is enabled and SetCPU is setting the USB charge profile, but I don't get either of the notifications I'm used to, and my computer doesn't register that I plugged it in. Anyone else run into this?
About phone states that the battery is discharging as well. Bad cable? Charges just fine over the other charger I have (dedicated wall charger, so I can't swap cables).

Sometimes its something simple. Are you trying to access your SD card? Make sure your USB sync is on USB Storage.
I get this problem as well. If I reboot my phone a few times it seems to start working again.
Yep, sure enough, after a second reboot it works fine. Thanks.

That was the problem, it never even gave me that option. just didn't register that it was plugged in at all.

Always try a reboot when something goes wrong. Id say 75% of the time it will fix your problem.
Might or might not be related, but...I just recently got a Droid 2 to "play with" and noticed that the internal memory can't be read by Astro File Manager or the stock "File Manager". When I plug the phone to my Mac I can only mount the SD card. I'm still looking at older threads but I figure I ask here just in case.
Just starting yesterday, when I plug my phone into my computer all it does is charge. No option to mount, no "usb not recognized", nothing. I can get into download mode but Odin doesn't recognize it.
I've searched dozens of other threads, tried most suggestions and can't seem to get anything to work. Suggestions would be appreciated.
Maybe you don't have drivers or bad USB I have 2 one only charges the other does both

I have the drivers, I've had no problems connecting previously. I've rebooted the phone multiple times.
Out of 3 galaxy s type devices: 1 doesn't even charge anymore, 1 charges but wont do data and 1 works if the cable is held at an angle. I think samsung can't make usb ports
I'm just now about to start a post asking how to change roms with out my usb. I had the same problem start months ago. First things where normal. Then, every now and then I would have to re plug the usb cable into the port to get it to mount. Then finally one time it just all together stopped working. I can charge, the charging icon comes up but no mounting options.
On the bright side, this is the first phone I have ever owned that I can just sync over wifi. And at least its not an apple device, if charging stops I can get an external battery charger ; )

My vibe is over a year old and I never close the door on the usb port. When I had the same issue as the OP it was a dirty usb port. I carefully cleaned it, which took a few times and it finally worked. Do it with the battery pulled. The loose port is caused from the male end of the original cable not the phone so I bought a new cable and it fits snug.
I've had my Galaxy S2 for 4 months now and now have a problem. When I plug the phone in, whether to USB or to the charger, it takes it a bit to recognize the phone is plugged in and to start charging. When I plug it in to USB it will charge after a minute, but I can not connect my phone to be mass storage. Windows can't detect it at all. If I disconnect the usb cable, my phone still thinks it is connected, with the notification for USB connection staying in the notification bar. In addition to this, my phone gets excessively hot regularly. I always make sure there isn't a runaway app, but that doesn't seem to matter.
Any one have any ideas?
I found a thread that describes my problem here.

I think I have solved the problem. I somehow managed to bend the USB pcb connector. I bent it back up towards the screen and everything is acting normal again. Read the link above for more information
I'm having a charging issue and am lost on what else to try to fix this. I can't charge using my OEM adaptor and cable, only when connected to PC with USB. The USB cable that works with my PC is the same one I use with the adaptor.
The USB port is on my phone is good, charges fine when connected to PC (although much slower because of different mVS). Read a suggestion to make sure the tab part of the USB connector isn't bent, it doesn't look damaged at all and like I said, has zero problems connecting to my laptop.
Have tried almost everything except going back to stock, and nothing fixes it. I've turned debugging mode off and back on, restored a backup from before the issue began, completely wiped and reinstalled 2 different build of ROMs with and without apps, fixed permissions, tried different kernels, different USB cables...
The adaptor is in good condition. But when plugged in while my phone is on, it doesn't recognize that's it's connected. Previously it would give a false charging reading. If my device is off, sometimes I would get the grey bar battery, but now it's just vibrating every few seconds. Idk what to do...
I have an i337m and am currently running slimkat weekly 6.2 but tried official 6.0 and restored a weekly 5.9 from before the issue began
I did format /data and /data/media (internal sdcard) I think right before the issue began in order to remove some old folded that would appear during cwm installations of zips from internal storage (e.g., hyperdrive for ex, which I haven't had installed since December) but that shouldn't screw up charging at all
Dude, you're trying way to hard. You're charger is messed up

I hope that's the case lol it worked for a bit last night until I unplugged it, then when I plugged it back in nothing happened... seems to only work if power cycled after being connected to my PC
So this issue happened out of no where after my phone died to zero last night. I tried charging it back up but all I could get out of it was the grey charging battery but it would only stay on for 1-2 seconds shut down and reboot. Let it charging for an hour and got to about 1-2% and it would die as soon as it booted up. Factory restored to OA6 and still see the same issue. This is also the odd thing... I was able to connect it to my computer and use Oden to do the restore! After lots of troubleshooting, trying 4 chargers, I realized wireless charging still works fine. Charged it up 100% over night and wireless charging is still working fine and phone is working fine. Still cannot get USB to be recognized while on either by computer or from USB charger. With a full battery, phone off, and USB plugged in phone still flashes the grey battery icon and reboots constantly.
Only thing I can think of is I had it in my pocket after spin class for a little and moisture might have gotten in the port?
Any ideas what happened here?
Update: I ended up just buying the Nexus 6P since I'm about due for a new phone anyways.
Well just figured I would pass this along. Was bored before and looked at diagrams to fix the USB board and saw this little port in the back you can access really easy. Decided to open that up and press the connection down a little tighter (the USB board is separate from the main board). USB didn't work before doing this, then pressed it tighter plugged USB in again and it worked.
