I have the Rogers HTC Dream and I got it on the day it came out. I absolutely love it.
The reason for this thread is for me, as an absolute n00b to this whole flashing ROMs and technical stuff, to ask you geniuses: how can I possibly get the Hero ROM onto my phone? I really, REALLY want it. Also, if it is possible, can you please guide me to the guide that lays out the step-by-step process please?
Thanks a whole lot.
No custom roms work on the rogers dream -- yet.
Root your phone, enable paid apps, purchase open home, get the hero skin and that should tide you over until someone figures this mess out.
I am a little disappointed by the stagnation of work being done on the rogers dream. Root is great, but it hasnt realized its full potential. Can any other dev gurus HELP?
I know. I need to know as soon as possible. The Hero ROM is driving me crazy...

I agree, I am really surprised that nothing has really happened with the rogers dream. Maybe Haykuro is silently working on it...
Let's hope so...
Haykuro help us!!
I did a search and couldn't find the answer. I mean I know the differences between the two, but technically couldn't one root the Dream and turn it into the android dev phone?

yes but would not have the sweet battery cover.
The radio firmware is different too, but most guides to rooting also cover flashing the dev SPL radio.
Thanks for clarifying. So technically any android device could be rooted and used for development then. We aren't limited to the dream?

If you are simply doing application development, root is probably not even necessary.
Thanks, I guess I was just wondering what the big deal the android dev phone was. I guess it's really nothing special. Thanks for the confirmations.

Technically, ADP1 *IS* an HTC DREAM. It is, as in IS. As in there is a factory churning out DREAMs, and some of them are given an extra sticker that says "ADP1".
Now the difference between an ADP1 HTC DREAM and a carrier-distributed HTC DREAM is in the locking... ADP1 is shipped fully unlocked (no carrier lock on the radio and engineering bootloader). Carrier-distributed HTC DREAMs have locked radio (only work on that carrier's network) and bootloader that enforces carrier-signed system images.
Now there is some hardware variation between DREAMs, basically depending on the radio frequencies used by the carrier. DREAM as distributed by ROGERS in Canada as far as I can tell is the oddball using 1900 where the rest use 1700/2100.
Hey guys, I was wondering if the new Verizon Wireless phone (the Eris) is actually their HTC Hero.
They claim it's a seperate model (HTC Desire.) Either way I was curious what was needed to get ROMs going for it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I may be out of date, but I thought the Eris wasn't rooted yet (which is is a prereq for getting ROM's installed on it).
The Eris, Cellular South, and most other versions of the phone had patched the vulnerability that Sprint had left in the phone and so it's not quite as easy currently.
It hasn't been rooted yet, and there is little to no enthusiasm to get it rooted. It may be a while before we get those custom Roms.
Well that's kinda sad. Is there any particular reason? I mean I don't own one but I am just curious. Is it just that its not seen as a demand for it or something like that?
Exactly, all just a numbers game. The vzw Eris will get rooted someday though, it might even be by you
It's a combination of lack of enthusiastic developers and the fact that the asroot2 exploit that works for the Sprint Hero has been patched. So... Haha. I have one and I've been desperately looking around for a way to root. I don't think enough people are buying it to generate enough enthusiasm to get people to really want to develop

Yep. may also help if I owned one. I still use my trusty awesome G1 and see no real reason to change. But I was debating "fixing" the eris. However I have quite a bit to learn in order to do so. And with the upcoming software patch for it I may want to wait. But thank you for clarifing. I really do appreciate it. If others would like it or like help with it I figure I am more than willing to go at it.

Yeah I could see that. As the Eris is up against the Moto Sholes I can see why not many people are. Getting one.
Actually, I've read that more people are buying the Droid Eris. They'll come in wanting the Droid and leave with the Eris.
Well it's partly a numbers game but it's partly a "starting from ground zero" timeframe thing. GSM Heros were the first out and they took a certain amount of time to become rooted...then came the CDMA Heros who needed a different way to root and it took a few weeks to get to there as well.
So...while it may or may not take longer, it will probably be around the same amount of time from release-ish before something shows up (or we get lucky with a new shiney kernel exploit to elevate priviledges...)

I disagree. We could be sitting for a while before anything happens. No known exploits, I don't think many people who would develop are rushing out to get one. It'll happen eventually, but it in my opinion, we'll be sitting tight for a while. Not that any of us can complain if we can't find one ourselves, haha.
What about using the Sprint Stock RUU for the Hero to load the original Sprint ROM on it and then rooting it? Subsequently, you could go back to a custom Eris ROM or something of the sort. I don't know if the Hero RUU would work on the Eris though.

I've been reading the Howard Forums and getting the impression that folks are more impressed with the Eris as opposed to the boxy and un-sexy Driod. I knew I was buying the Droid Eris before I called VZW. I am just GLAD to finally be rid of T-Mo after 7 years of service. While they were good for a while, their customer service started to really piss me off lately. There's also the fact that they really didn't train their PDA reps on Android before they released the phones. And the lack of 3G in most of the country was a killer! Now, if someone would like to root this bad boy. I would be most grateful.

Even if it did work, then you have you'd have the Sprint Rom, not the Verizon Rom. Not sure if it's a good idea or not...

I would try it if someone has the stock VZW ruu to flash back to in case it does not work.
Is there anyway to get the RUU? I mean, what are the logistics involved there?

It's up to VZW or HTC to post it, unless someone on the inside leaks a copy for us.... hint hint... anyone have a copy they want to share with us?
just wondering. I have a sprint hero. but you VZW people shouldn't wait too long, cause i think the droid has the same kernel version as the eris, so when they find an exploit in the droid, to get root you VZW people should be able to use the same exploit. now if the droid's bootloader gets hacked then yeah, you'll probably have to wait.

Haha. Wishful thinking, but I'm right there with you. I can't believe they patched the asroot2 exploit.
Ive been flashing my htc phones for a long time now, but im new to android and the rooting process... Im trying to learn more and help with the Eris if possible, but I have a simple question. Is the only way to root the Eris, to get the original RUU?
I have the Eris now, and if I can do anything else I would be willing to do so!
i just recently got a htc magic with the e911 update just wondering is this is rootable ?
I'm just wondering, have you searched?
Answer is No.
Ok so I got my shiney new HTC Magic from rogers, for f*cking free thanks to that deal that enabled dream owners to get the magic for free. I harassed for a month an a half. But I am loving it, I'm using it as my main phone. But I can't find anything on rooting the new update for the damn thing. Is there even a name for this update. I'm glad I signed that waiver for dream owners. Cuz if I did it for the dream, I would have a useless peice of ****. So as the first guy asked, where is the root?
I have search and i am unable to find a straight answer.

Straight answer: No.
If the update becomes rootable, it would be clear.
but I red that there was a work around like we have to make sure we have the same radio as the new update so like that rogers won't know we are rooted users and dont get the data cut off is that true or it's just bogus?

You need a rooted phone to get the work around. If you update to the newest update then there is no point in trying this loophole since you have the newest SPL and radio that they want you to have.
The newest update is not rooted.
If you have a Rogers Magic with the new update and ARE NOT using it in Canada on Rogers (ex: in US on ATT), can you change the ROM to a rooted ROM or am I just SOL on Wifi Tether?

That doesn't make much sense -- if the newest updated ROM (1.76.0010 for ROGERS) is not rooted, what makes you think you can change the ROM if your not in Canada? It's still the same unrooted SPL.
If you try using WiFi tethering, you are going to get billed up the ying yang with charges with roaming and tethering charges if you don't have a tethering package.

That is what I was asking, just didn't phrase it right. I've switched to 32A Magic from a MT3G to have 3G bands for AT&T. So far not impressed with this Rogers ROM, almost makes me want to deal with EDGE again just so I can use a ROM that I like. Thanks for your answer.

No problem. Just make sure you watch out for the tethering, heard some bad stories with ROGERS + tethering.
There are so many topics about this now.. you'd think Rogers would do something about it.
What could Rogers possibly benifit from "locking" this phone like this. Kinda takes away from the 'open-sourceness' of the device.

ROGERS just wants you to have their ROM with their applications. That is really all it's about. ROGERS says "we have to test out updates to see if they work with our network" but we all know it's bulls--t; you can flash any ROM and you still receive phone calls, SMS, MMS, internet and still get 3G with no additional billing or problems with your phone.
All they really want is to lock you down so you can't unlock your phone (therefore taking your phone to other providers). You bought the phone from ROGERS, ROGERS wants everyone to know that you are with ROGERS.
Im pretty sure HTC are the ones who locked it when they made this firmware update. Rogers didnt make the update.

Not really, it was probably at Rogers request. If carriers are going to do stuff like that (which they are entitled to), then HTC or Google should make unbranded versions available for people who want the phone, but aren't on that network.

ROGERS is the only one to have the 1.76.0010 SPL for a reason; paid for the SPL and branding on the ROM. They keep implimenting newer systems to try and block out non-ROGER ROMs. They want to lock it down, HTC didn't have to, they have no reason to.
You know what, come to think if it, ROGERS probably knows about the .29 kernal bypass for rooting and are reluctant to update to the newer kernal.
Food for thought!

It only works with the 2.6.29 kernel and it's a slim chance of it happening -- It's basically just brute-forcing root access. Magic 32A has the 2.6.27 kernel and does not have this bug allowing root access.
If you want to know more, search the forums.
Hi,
Please forgive me as I have been searching everywhere online and on the forum for my answer.
I have a HTC Legend (Virgin) that is unlocked - Running on Rogers.
1st Question: Is this phone Rootable? I have heard yes and I have heard no, based on the firmware that it is presently running.
2nd Question: Is it possible if the phone is rooted to flash a Basic 2.2 Android Rom (I personally don't use HTC Sense)
The reason I am asking as HTC Announced that 2.2 Will not be updated until Christmas time.
And Before anyone says I should have bought the NEXUS One - The reason - THE SIZE
That phone is huge, I previously had an Xperia X10, which was TOO Big and I quite like the build quality of the Legend.
Thanks for all your Help! I Greatly Appreciate it!
Yes the phone is rootable, but you're right it depends on what version you currently have installed. Check out the android development section to figure out what you can and can't do.
Froyo at christmas is incorrect.
Htc has said all current devices will have froyo before christmas. However speculation says the legend itself should most likely have it in or around august.
Next, if you manage to root your phone you can talk a look in the android development section(again) for the legend and you will find 1 or 2 froyo roms have been ported semi successfully. They work and run but have a few minor problems.
One is the cyogen mod 6 (I probably spelled it wrong)thread.
You cannot flash a stock version of froyo to the legend, you will have to use one of these roms.
Hope I could help. I'm looking at getting the virgin mobile legend myself soon. are you happy so far?
Thanks
Thanks for your info! I was just feeling a little overwhelmed with all the info as I am not really up with all the lingo.
To answer your question about the Legend, I love it! The build quality is Superior, it just fits in your hand so nicely, and looks good there as well.
I have had MANY cell phones in the last 5 years (Well over 40...) and this is one that I know I will keep for a long time... More so than the iPhone.
Cheers.

Hey,
To be honest I took it to an Unlocking place in Vancouver, It took them aprox 20 min to complete, It still has a few Apps for Virgin/Bell on the phone however no where does it have the Virgin Logo Etc. I use the Rogers APN Settings rogers-core-appl1.apn and it works flawless with 3G
I have not been able to get 2.2 onto this phone at this point, I may just wait until it's pushed out by HTC.
This sounds GR8!

I ordered Wildfire but changed my mind and changed the order to Legend...
A good choice i think...
Been using my KAISER for a looong time now and it's time for a retirement, i think
Just installed Donut Android on my KAISER but it soaks battery so i think i have to revert to WM 6.5 again....
I think i'll use it as a backup phone for some time
Does anyone know if tom tom works on Legend?
The unlock was done through the store so not quite sure on how it was completed. I have seen many websites that offer the unlock.
In regards to TomTom try the Google navigation. It's amazing. Works great and integrates with your contacts and the mapping program quite well. I find the voice to be quite rough. Hopefully they'll allow changes to that after its out is Beta.

I bought my legend at Virgin (349 CAD) and am running Rogers as well, to unlock it you need to purchased the unlock code from HTC by providing the phones S/N. Their are lots of places online that will provide the codes for $10-20, I haven't been able to find a free source.
Currently their is no software unlock for this phone.

I have the Virgin Mobile (Canada) HTC Legend and can confirm I was able to successfully unlock it for usage on Fido/Rogers. After this I upgraded the rom using a gold card to a stock HTC rom to remove the Bell/Virgin crapware.
After this I found the downgrade path to 1.31 which has successfully allowed me to have the phone rooted. Now I just need to wait for a good rom to be made with sense. So far all the roms I have tried do have their own issues like, camera problems, pinch zoom functionality...
