I probably have no idea what I'm talking about/old news, but...
I notice toward the bottom of the screen under "Emulation skins" that it supports up to 854x480 resolution. I assume that is for Motorola Droid development.
My question is - Can these "skins" be applied to permanently change the N1 resolution (800x480) to the slightly higher res of the droid? I believe the physical sizes of the screen are the same. Are screens inherently at their max resolution and you can't exceed that under any circumstances?
Probably a dumb question but thanks anyway.

Resolution is not a function of screen size but of pixels per inch supported by the device hardware. No software will make an N1 display better resolution than it was designed to physically.
Not to be mean, but you're right, it is a dumb question.
The resolution of the physical screen cannot be changed. Look at the screen under a magnifying glass. Each individual pixel there is a physical object.
"Emulation skins" might be referring to the SDK emulator so you can test your applications on your development computer. You can test that higher res then without even owning a Droid.
can we swap retina display in there
I'm going to go against what everyone else said so far and tell you ... PROBABLY. But not how you are thinking.
I say probably as in using a lower setting. But that wouldn't make much sense and would probably only ever be used for troubleshooting and testing, so essentially no... but you probably really can... but wouldn't want to.
Like others have said, it's a hardware limitation and the software is going to use the highest res the hardware can support, right out of the box.

you don't want the retina display, especially when its being reported as highly defective in the iphone 4s that have been arriving lately... color spots everywhere.. check engadget

LOL, remember the slight 3G drop on SOME Nexus Ones when you gripped the phone in an unnatural way? Remember how iPhanboys were hooting hollering and laughing their asses off at us...talk about poetically justified ironic hilarity.
Have you seen the videos of the iPhone 4 3G loss?

Slightly unrelated question. I read that the Droid's display has 16 million colours and the EVO can only display 65k colours. Does that mean the Nexus One can only do 65k colours as well?

Oh god this makes me laugh. So many people swear that sinner don't lose signal when covering the antenna with your hand, and bashed the nexus for its bottom antenna. Now look at the new iPhone it has the same issue
To be fair - and much as I dislike Apple - for ME (on T-Mobile UK) the Nexus has the worst signal strength and ability to maintain a solid data connection of all my recent devices (3Gs/Hero/Desire/HD2): I get frequent data connection drops, failed SMS sends multiple times a day and I regularly have to go in and out of aircraft mode to get my data working properly again or to enable me to send a text that keeps failing. This is my second device. Overall I still love the look and feel of it over iPhone (3Gs at least).
As for resolution...Nexus has fewer pixels than Droid therefore cannot have the same resolution via any hack.
Hi.
I just want to know how people feel about screen size.
I know that they say ''the bigger the better'' but hey, we are still talking about a phone here.
So i say that the 4 inch X10 display is great and i think is the maximum i would like on my phone.
I was reading the other thread about the X10 and the Streak and saw this review with a video of the Streak (http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/dell-streak-review/ )
At the end of the video they show us how it fits your pants and how you look when talking on the phone.
I personaly think it is a bit odd.
So i would like to see how everybody feels about the screen size, aspect ratio and if you would like to see bigger displays on a phone.
I think 3.7 to 4.0" is ideal, any smaller, and my fingers can't press the right buttons lol.
To me the aspect ratio is more important, the 4" 16:9 display on the X10 is optimal imo.
4" 16:9 screen and some added borders by the phone itself is the limit for a phone in my opinion. Anything bigger I would see as a tablet computer.
Some say the X10 are too big. I'd say those saying that, are the small people with cute little hands.
I'm a rather big dude myself and I find the X10 fit perfectly into my hand and I can operate the phone onehanded, but I prefer one hand holding, the other pointing.

I'm rather average guy, so average that they could probably use my hands to design stuff for "average-sized hands" and I find the the X10 to be perfect. No one I've encountered has any problems using the phone, except maybe dad but he's an old car mechanic and couldn't use a touchscreen if his life depended on it.
It's just right for me, using my Garmin Nuvi with a 5" screen for comparison, 4" is perfect. Phones are supposed to be "mobile" these days, anything bigger would be borderline pocket PC and just too much bulk in the pocket to be called a mobile.
for me it can be bigger a bit
4.5' should be the best for me
most important is the resolution need increase
previously there's a thread talking about resolution is good enough
but it's obviously losing when i compare to my x1

The X10 has a higher resolution than the X1 and has even slightly higher than most other phones.

yes but as the screen on the x1 is so much smaller (3in), the pixel size is also reduced and as such it looks sharper. so if you cut off an inch of the x10s display, the x1 would have a higher res.
i.e. hd films on the x1 looked amazing. just small
same difference between a 1920x1080 17" laptop screen and 1920x1200 24" desktop screen. the 24" is higher res, but the laptop will look sharper.

So what you really meant was that the X1 has a higher DPI. Yeah, that is a good point, but on the other hand the X10 display does more colours and the added size helps when reading text because you don't have to zoom in as much as with a smaller display to see it clearly. So there are good points and bad points to each, I prefer a bigger screen but YMMV.

Heh, must've misread somewhere along the cross-fire. I'm blaming the 40C heat here.
haha ok it was me who said resolution.
anyway my point is in the "previous post" i mentioned many guys said very firmly that the DPI of X10 is good enough, any higher DPI won't make it different, and in the same thread people point out than x1 got the same DPI as iphone4.
but the fact is when you comparing it side by side you'll spot the different even your eye is 30cm away from the device.

I'd say that's a valid point, "good enough" is just that. It's a phone ffs, it's not like you're spend spend hours staring at the screen or reading any longer books on it anyway. I have to look at the screen from about two or centimeters away to see any individual pixels or even notice any pixeling for that matter. For it's purpose it's more than good enough.
If I want to watch movies comfortably the screen has to be much, much bigger anyway and if you want to read a lot then you should get an e-ink display. For casual webbrowsing, making calls and listening to music this display is just fine.
yap it's good enough but can be better.
though it's not gonna happen in x10 hopefully for next SE flagship.
i am a SE fanboy with high expectations

4" is ok.
4.3" or 4.5" would be better.
Bigger, no way.
All things considered I think 4 is great. 4.3 or 4.5 would be nicer but higher battery drain.
I guess a 4.5 AMOLED would still be better on the battery than a 4.0 LCD.
Has anyone noticed that texts on Vibrant are not very sharp, and you can notice the pixelation easily?
Comparing Vibrant and Nexus One side by side, N1's texts look much sharper. I know that DPI of Vibrant is higher due to the larger screen, but I didn't think it would be this noticeable.

They both have PenTile displays, and S-AMOLED display has the panel much closer to the glass.
I noticed the sharpness issue too. I can't really explain it but it was looking as if the default text on the Vibrant had edge enhancement applied and there's a halo'ing effect on the letters. This was taken care of by switching to one of the included fonts. The font I'm using now does not have this problem.

dpi and screen size are two entirely separate attributes. we're talking apples and oranges. they are not related.
While I will chime in my $0.02 as well, let's not make this yet another "pentile is crap" thread, there are plenty of those already. One of the first things I do on every new phone I look at is to pull up engadget in landscape in desktop mode, completely zoomed out. It's a very familiar website to me and I can get a good sense of how much screen real estate the phone offers and how legible small text is. I was amazed on the EVO 4G how legible very small text was, and I noticed right away on the Vibrant that the same text was rougher and somehow interpolated. While the EVO screen is somewhat larger and text is thus fractionally bigger, the difference was still noticeable. However, I still got the Vibrant for several reasons:
- it's the only large screen Android phone on TMO, and probably will be for a while--I'm quite SICK of waiting
- I want to stick with GSM carriers, and AT&T doesn't have anything better either
- the EVO has other issues, such as pretty bad battery life and possibly the detaching screen problem
- quite frankly I only read zoomed out sites for a quick overview, to read full articles I always zoom in a bit. Despite having perfect vision, even on the EVO reading an entire article or two at such tiny text sizes would get tedious after a while. Once zoomed in a bit, the Vibrant looks perfectly fine and non-distracting, at least to me
- the Vibrant has other things going for it, such as incredible contrast, better battery life, an awesome camera (yes, even without flash), and quite frankly the highest performance hardware out right now, until the 1.5GHz or 2GHz devices come one
To sum up, ALL the current phones out require one or more compromises of one type or another. Determine for yourself which ones you can live the least with, buy the corresponding phone, and quit reading these forums to prevent buyer's remorse ;-)
Post a pic side by side??
vibrant text sharpness
i read somewhere online when i updated my nexus one to 2.2 that it had a fix for sharper screen resolution and it did look better after the update so i imagine when the vibrant gets the update the screen will look just as sharp as the n1 if not better

Because the DPI, "Dots per Inch" is exactly that; a given amounts of dots per an inch of space. Could be on a 5 ft screen or a 1 " screen and be the same.

Indeed, so if two displays have the same number of pixels but different physical dimensions, then they also have different maximum possible DPI.

I think he was referring to the op and his quote here
"I know that DPI of Vibrant is higher due to the larger screen"
This is not always true cause a smaller screen could have a higher dpi then a larger screen because it's running a resolution that provides it with such. Just like the Iphone 4 dpi is higher then the Evo's dpi even though it's a much smaller screen.
I just read a 350 page book using the Kindle app. I thought the text looked fine. Maybe it's time to pay a visit to Lens Crafters...

this phone looks decent though
Apparently BGR got a tip that it has the same internals as the fascinate:

Does anyone else feel screwed?
That thing is ugly. It looks like someone took a Fascinate and put it in a taffy puller.
I'm happy with what I've got
so it would have to be longer than the fascinate because of the second screen is it 4" or 3.5?
3.5 for the upper screen.

Absolutely not. I myself so no need for that extra screen. If part of their intention to make it a notifier screen when device is asleep, then a front facing color led would have been suffice. And with large hands myself I've been holding my fascinate in my hand and envisioning the extra length (that's what she said) and the rounded bottom. And it would seem to be a huge balancing act and never mind the thumb acrobatics required to get from top to bottom. And how weird would it be to type in landscape? I love the ergonomics of the fascinate and I DO NOT like the look of that thing at all. And it would also be funny if they kept the same 1500mAh battery with the added hardware.
Feeling screwed, no. A little pity, yes.
good day.

Is it only coming in a 5.0" screen size? That's a bit small for me, so I was wondering if the BlackBerry Venice was coming in a bigger size or the size isn't actually 5.0". Otherwise, really looking forward to seeing a modern phone with a physical keyboard, that's something I really miss.

Latest rumor suggested 5.4" QHD. As far as rumor goes, there will be only one sized Venice (Or "Priv" as the new name)
I prefer 6+ devices but will give a chance to Venice if only it is 5.4" and bigger!

I've only really had 5.0" and under phones before this one. It's 6.1" and I love the screen! It seems like the perfect size for me. I think I'd be able to cope with a 5.2"+ screen, but I'd rather not spend my money and then find out that the display is too small for me.
It's going to be 5.4" to 5.5". It's still a rumored spec, but if you see the hands on video, it's clearly bigger than a GS6, which is 5.1". It's safe to call this thing a phablet. The bigger the better, makes that portrait slide out keyboard that much easier to get onboard with!
