Hiya,
I just showed my girlfriend my new Nexus One, and honestly I expected her to love it as much as I did. Anyway, she found the screen exaggeratedly large, and said it didn't fit in her hand. In short, she would have loved a smaller version of it.
She has a Samsung Corby and its smaller screen seems to be enough for her. That made me think, has there been word about making an Android phone with a much smaller screen, and thus a much smaller size? Truth be told, that would save battery which seems to be the main problem with these phones right now.
Do you think such a phone would sell well? Would there be a market niche for it?
I think 3.7 inch is the perfect size. Going higher would make it too big, but going lower would reduce the viewing area too much for my liking.

Sounds like your girlfriend is used to having small things in her hand?
Seriously though, LG do a small phone and it looks great unfortunately the screen resolution and quality are very poor. It could have been really nice.
Samsung makes retarded looking phones. You can't ever expect anyone who likes Samsung to like a different style. And...the learning curve would be too much for her to handle.
Wouldn't a myTouch 3G fill that need perfectly then? I do believe it is a bit smaller than the N1, and it does have a smaller screen at 3.2.
The hero is a great phone. And it's got a small screen, 3.2 inch I think.
Personally I think anything smaller than 3.7 is too small for a smartphone. The iPhone has a wierd screen size ratio to make it seem bigger, but i often found it was too small still.
I haven't tried anything such as the HD2 so 3.7inch is the largest phone i've used so far.
I think 3.9/4 inches would be an ideal size, but ONLY if the battery was above 2000mAh. With a phone that long, the battery wouldn't even protrude much at all.

You're looking for this: 2.8" touchscreen / 256MB RAM / 512MB ROM / 3.5" headphone jack.

Yes, it's resistive. But it's a great upgrade from the Corby.
On the other hand though, what isn't?
What about the samsung behold II?

I've played around quite a bit with the Touch HD2 and I must say I wouldn't buy a phone that big. Sure it's fantastic to have that kind of screen real estate, but as a phone for day to day use, no.

Fair enough... I haven't had a chance to play with anything with a bigger screen than the N1. Interested in trying it out, but I can see your point.
I would gladly rock a 4.3" Android in a heartbeat, cant wait till a few come out, if theres one thing instantly noticible about the Nexus its the massive screen size compared to the G1/MyTouch, I think the HD2 is a great size, just needs a keyboard and android : )
what changes would you like to see?
i love this phone but there are a few things that i would love to see re-designed on the phone.
for example:
put a slidable door that covers the hdmi & usb ports to keep out dust.
an access door on the side to remove the sd card instead of removing the battery to get to it.
move the power button to the lower right side of the phone for easy access.
a dedicated camera button on the right side.
most important i would of had a gorilla glass / super amoled display like the epic.
then this phone would be complete in my mind.
whats you wish list?
I would just fix the light leak issue, and upgrade the processor so its easier on the battery (dual core or something), that would be it really.

Depends on the cpu. Could be a newer more efficient CPU.
i think the evo far surpasses any phone design thus far. whoever artistically designed this phone, i want to shake that persons hand.
its elegant, minimal, precise, lightly accented with reds and metals, thin, 3.5mm jack on the top, kickstand, everything about this phone to me still rings "best phone design to date"
im all about contemporary, minimalism and this phone is THAT.
i cant stand samsungs designs, theyre always curved around the edges, round, huge logo, ugly buttons, everything about samsung phones are disgusting to me.
sony, the same way... just because its a sony ericsson doesnt mean you gotta perpetuate the stereotypical sony aesthetics.
htc's design teams are the best hands down.
nothing about this phone i would change, except internal hardware, or a few more mm of lcd screen.
in my opinion the screen and display are just fine. i put mine next to my buddys iphone 4 and my display looked way better... also dont see the big desire for gorilla glass, the screen is already glass and doesnt scratch. honestly if i wanted to change that much i would just buy another phone
super amoled is a must for the evo.

Yea thats what I ment by upgrading the processor and then probably underclock it for normal use and battery life, but also have the ability it use it to its full potential, with root access of course.

Mine has scratched with just keys in my pocket. It seems like it never would, but it can get scratched easier than you think. Gorilla glass would have been nice.
The screen is far superior to that galaxyS samsung screen. If there are better designs than that though, I would have rather had a more power conscious screen. Our screen pulls close to 300ma of power at full brightness... that hurts bad.
I hate the banding on samoleds right now, i hate the over saturation. I love the saturation, don't get me wrong, that is the best thing about them. Unlimited contrast ratios and whatnot, but don't unleash it and let it run overly rampant and make things look stupidly oversaturated. I have a highish end TF panel LCD at home for photo editing purposes only. So it is easy to compare things to it and see their flaws. And personally the Evo LCD looks worlds more natural and worlds better than the samoleds right now. Call it a "super" lcd if you want. Cuz I think it is super sexy.
Things I would change..... Yeah lets get the new dual core snapdragon MSM8660 in here and get 20x the pixel drawing power LITERALLY 20X. That would be nice. And with almost identical power consumption at that *at 1gz* of course the msm runs at 1.2 easily and higher than that when OC'd and pulls some extra juice at that point. Our processor was outdated on release. Kinda sucks.
And what the hell. Get this HDMI desktop mirroring and everything under control. Don't give me an HDMI port that only works where you want it to work. What if I want to host evo conferences. I don't want to have to put my evo on an old school bulb projector or something lol just to be able to show it off.
In all seriousness though, that really makes me angry, let me show off what I want to show off.
The speakers are attrocious. The call speaker is very distorted. I end up EQ'ing out 100hz and below and it helps some, so it is evidently an over excursion distortion issue. Put 3 of the speaker they used in there and extend that slot across the top from edge to edge. I need to be able to talk on my phone... as a phone.
The phone is beautiful as far as design and curves go though. Very thin. I think it is perfectly sized for a phone. Any bigger and the thing would be unusable with one hand. Any smaller and it just makes me want more screen real estate.
unless im mistaken a dual core would save more battery because it only draws half unless running something power hungry like a game and then both cores are used, otherwise its only operating at half

The display on the EVO is awful, I don't mean this to be another iPhone 4 vs EVO thread but the viewing angles on the EVO display are AWFUL. Throw in the lower resolution and the lower color depth, and well, you know.
That said, being realistic with what is probably currently available to HTC:
-4.3" SLCD display
-768 MB of RAM
-1 GHz 45nm Scorpion/Snapdragon w/ Adreno 205 GPU (maybe higher clock if available)
-Aluminum casing
-Better camera sensor for BOTH the front and back, lower the MP if needed
-I also would like to see a Nexus One like trackball
-Sprint ID instead of Sense. I'd prefer to have 100% stock but Sprint ID is close enough TBH and is realistic.

Better GPU (but definitely not a must), 1800 mAh battery standard. It doesn't add any bulk or require a new battery cover. Also, make it a world phone. Oh, and make the white version all-white and make the back glossy on the black cover as well.

The new dual cores coming out will get 75% better life due to reduced die size.
A Pico projector would be nice addition. Also the new technology that allows the user to gesture above the screen as opposed to touching it.

I also find the saturation on the samoled screens to be very unappealing. It is like looking at a pile of melted crayons. However one of the new Sharp "glassesless" 3d screens would be cool.
If we are really dreaming, how about the new plastic screen cover that actually changes shape during use so that you can "feel" the keyboard buttons and the screen goes back to flat when the keyboard isn't being used?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
-A unibody aluminum casing (make it extremely durable) I hate the fact this phone feels cheap in my hand as oppose to holding someone's nexus one, G2 and the iphone. The plastic is turnoff.
-A low-volatge CPU, that can still give the power of a 1gz processor.
-Dedicated Camera Button, if this phone is going have a camera hump that's 8mp, Why not have a dedicated camera button.
-Kill off HTC Sense and use PURE ANDROID W. VANILLA. HTC sense use to many resources in the background at startup than Pure Android, its disgusting that HTC Sense is a big factor of quickly draining the battery.
-Make it thinner
-Just make sure it better than the next gen iphone5

^ When there's black on the screen, it's hard to tell where the screen stops and the casing begins! And when the phone is turned off, it just looks like one sexy slab of obsidian.
I ended up taking back my MT4G because I couldn't stand the washed out colors on the screen. The G2's SLCD was fantastic, but the SAMOLED on this absolutely blow it out of the water.

Screen is great, but it's too bright! Was at TRON Legacy midnight showing last night, after the movie, the lights were still down, I turn on my phone and blinded myself! Even manually set to 0% it's way too bright. Makes it hard to use the phone at night when you're laying in bed reading the news.
Heh, you should rip an Avatar DVD and watch it on the SAMOLED. T-Mobile knew what it was doing when it packaged the movie with the Vibrant, because it's an absolutely jaw-dropping combo. My iPhone 4-owning friends are just blown away when I show them movies on my Vibrant.
I lick my super amoled when I am in the bathroom and no one can see me.
Coming from MT4G ( and the inferior screen too ) It's really a big difference.

No specs confirmed. lets start what we thnk it will have..
Super AMOLED.. sounds nice.
I would bet it gets an 8MP, hoping for maore than 1.3 front cam with all the video chat services available.
dual-core would make this thing very popular. Form factor will be a major point.
Honestly, Dell Streak innovate this and no one will come with a better idea. 5" exactly fit the pocket any extra will be too much.

5.3 might be a little too big...a friend of mine just got the 4.5" samsung infuse and it's a very nice size. 4.5-5" is the range I want.
you could technically increase the screen size of a phone to 5.3 without making the actual phone bigger in size than the streak, the side panels on either side of the streak are very big and could be utilised for extra screen realestate imo.
I will definitely jump on this one if all the specs are good. We will need dual core on this one!

exactly, who needs bezel? I mean sure, we need speakers and a mic and front cam, but all of that is already so small. Iam one for a minimalistic bezel look.
If it is good size/design I will be interested.
Sammy and TouchWiz.. not so much so, but there latest version should be nice to fiddle with for a while, something new for a change.
what resolution would they do with a .3" larger display??
960x540 probably.

I agree could be a very promising phone, to be honest I think you could get an extra inch screen size out the streak cause the bezel on each side and the top and bottom, would easily make up another inch. 6 inch screen!!!!!
But I think the streak is the perfect size, if the phone was any bigger it wouldn't fit in your pocket.
So more screen same size!!! :-D
Bezel
Streak could have that if they make the capacitive buttons on screen, and do away with the top & bottom bezel. There is a good .5" of wasted space on the streak.
I'm keeping my eye on this rumor. If it pans out, might be my streak replacement (sorry Dell...you didn't know what you had!)
Actually, the glass on the Streak is just a hair under 5.5 inches diagonal, so if they could make the display edge to edge, they could beat the Samsung without changing the form factor at all.

Hi

This could be Streak successor. It is true, that the screen can be actually bigger and device maybe even smaller then Streak, so let's wait for some pictures, specifications etc.
On the other hand, I hear somewhere that it should have querty keyboard which might be nice but then it might not be thin like Streak.
But then, think about support for this phone! Released drivers, kernels etc., so custom roms development will be much easier and there will be probably better support from apps developers (because Samsung will actually do some marketing for this tablet/phone unlike Dell).
Anyway, I probably won't have money to buy it
So long as it's not ****ty shiny plastic like every other Samsung/LG phone I'm happy.
I want quality metals/aluminium like Dell/HTC then it would have me interested.

Before i get flamed for dumbest thread ever, just wanted to note ive been seeing a lot of posts on xda and other forums about all the 4.5"+ screens fixing to come out soon with ice cream sandwich. I'm sure manufacturers did their research before deciding that 4.5" is the future.
you do have a good point. but what about the normal people who actually use their phones for calls and dont want to use two hands to hold the phone up to their ear? and not everyone has huge hands or wears loose jeans.. lol
i even got annoyed using the HD7 at times because you cant use one hand with everything.. its fun for the first few weeks but yeah.
i think 4" to 4.2" is perfect size, not too big or too small. everyone seems to love the 4" sweetspot. i dont understand why not make more of them, especially HTC they always make 4.2" or 3.7" lol. than again its all personal preference.
Dont get me wrong, i would love to have a 4.5-4.7" phone to mess around with and play games on at times, but that is what a tablet is for -_-

you said i have a good point but i think you still missed it. i was using the atrix as reference because i have it, this is an atrix forum and it's a small topic worth a few posts. if the atrix is ~5" diagonal across, take away the capacitive buttons at the button and add a 4.5-4.65" screen and the phone will not get dramatically bigger. it's going to be kinda like an upgrade from the nexus one, and i speak from experience here, it gotta a hair taller and little bit wider. i think the google nexus will be a little wider. so nothing to balk about when using it as a phone. if it does get a little wider some people might have a problem with it. i sometimes have a hard time reaching the other side but all i gotta do is reposition it. i think at most we'll have another .25" to reach across, but that shouldn't be a problem for me, but it might be for a few. we're prolly talking galaxy s2 at the biggest.

I love this...the Atrix is 5" diagonally...well...since this is how they measure all of the flat screens and such...we don't need it any bigger to be better...just add some more resolution to it...some of us actually use them to talk a-lot on...not just text and play games..I have no problems with the size of it to watch my movies with it...and any bigger will be a royal PITA to carry around at work with out getting banged up...
IMHO
Mac
Yeah, well personally, i hope it s not much bigger either. It wont grow much if at all depending how they do it. Gs2 is too big for and so are the heads.
I voided my warranty.
5" would be great if it was edge to edge lcd, which probably wont happen. Unfortunately, my guess would be that Apple will create the first edge to edge lcd phone and THEN other companies will follow suit

I don't see it as unfortunate, though. As long as someone is driving innovation in the industry then consumers are benefited.
However, it annoys me that no company other than Apple would do it first.
Edge 2 edge has downsides. The way tour digitizer will react or error when holding it. An example of this is grab a phone with little to no bezel on the sides and a ****ty digitizer. Nexus one is a good example. I cant think of any phones wuth no bezels on the side and good digitizer but it still acts up sometimes when your fingers are over lapping the sides. Also, the phones will get thicker. Everybodys going to have to kick their anorexic phone habits for an edge 2 edge.

The Atrix has a 4" diagonal DISPLAY. The nav buttons do not count. Actually, in order to get 5", you'd have to count the entire face of the phone (and it still wouldn't be quite 5). This is not how it is measured. The issue is display size.
Also, the Atrix has a small display, for one with a 4" diagonal. Since it has a thin aspect ratio (9:16), its surface area is not as great as, say, the Galaxy S, which has a wider aspect ratio (3:5). Both phones have 4" diagonals, while one is actually bigger. I suppose you could say that the Atrix is small for its size.

A 4.5" 9:16 AR screen would be 2.2" x 3.9". Assuming a quarter inch bezel on all sides, that would be 2.7" x 4.4" or 4.9" diagonally. So you can have a 4.5" screen on a phone just slightly fatter but shorter than the Atrix. 4.5" will be the new standard.

oh, i missed that part. still you do have a good point lol. i wasnt talking about form factor 100%. i just like the screen size itself. i do miss my 4.2" screen on my HD7 but i also got tired of it as well at times. how would you use the phone if it had no bottom or anything? if it were JUST the screen and no plastic/siding on the front, how would you hold it without pressing and wouldnt it be hard as hell to text on? i think the atrix is perfect size with a perfect size screen for just moderate use. i just hate how ugly it is haha. these are the things i cant really make up my mind on though.. i love to have phones with big screen for media, but i like smaller phones for just texting and such, i guess thats why i set at 4-4.2". ive never had a phone bigger so i am not really one to judge! i am interested in the new HTC WP7 with a 4.7" screen though.

your face must hurt. you facepalm on alot of threads lol.
I guess Im the only one who is down for a larger display standard, I would even go as far as 6 inches and still put an Otterbox on it lol. I dont keep my phone in my pocket now as it is I carry it in my hand most of the time. And yes I do have a tablet, but I still want an oversized phone as I spend much more time on it. I think its Sony who is working to develop the "foldable" displays, I believe its just a concept at this time. But yea if I could buy a 6 inch display or a phone that unfolds into a tablet I would lol.
Edit: and Im not talking a kyo cera (or whatever it is) ugly ass 2 screen fold Im talking the actual display itself is bendable (currently only up to so many thousand times then the display quality starts to decrease). Do a Goog search you will find it..

that tablet looks badass, i wish there was less of a gap in the middle though. i am so glad to see sony in the tablet business now.
I'd like a big phone but phones with big screens should be the only ones. not everyone wants a huge phone that cant even fit in your pocket.. some people like a medium screen with a keyboard on bottom, some people like a 4" screen that isnt too big or small, some people like phones that look like dvd cases up to your head and cant fit in your pocket, and some people are even more dumb and like small screens with no keyboards. its all personal preference. there shouldnt be only one choice. im up for the first three always being available. iphone sh*t that isnt only 3.5 can go away all it wants. too small. unless you are 12, which you shouldnt even have a phone if you are.
i remember those days when everyone was freaking out over the dell streak, i wanted to get my hands on one so bad lol.
I saw this very attractive young woman recently using a dell streak to text or something. Then she got a phone call. I had to walk away very fast because it was hilarious. It looked like she was trying to talk to a book. But i welcome 4.5" inch screens with out buttons on the face. the phones out now are way too big as and i dont want anybody laughing at me.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
