Sizes? - BlackBerry Priv

Is it only coming in a 5.0" screen size? That's a bit small for me, so I was wondering if the BlackBerry Venice was coming in a bigger size or the size isn't actually 5.0". Otherwise, really looking forward to seeing a modern phone with a physical keyboard, that's something I really miss.

Latest rumor suggested 5.4" QHD. As far as rumor goes, there will be only one sized Venice (Or "Priv" as the new name)

I prefer 6+ devices but will give a chance to Venice if only it is 5.4" and bigger!

I've only really had 5.0" and under phones before this one. It's 6.1" and I love the screen! It seems like the perfect size for me. I think I'd be able to cope with a 5.2"+ screen, but I'd rather not spend my money and then find out that the display is too small for me.

It's going to be 5.4" to 5.5". It's still a rumored spec, but if you see the hands on video, it's clearly bigger than a GS6, which is 5.1". It's safe to call this thing a phablet. The bigger the better, makes that portrait slide out keyboard that much easier to get onboard with!

this is my question too

that's what a swiss shop and phonearena has listed.

It will not be that big, 5.4" is just right size.

Screen size?

Hi.
I just want to know how people feel about screen size.
I know that they say ''the bigger the better'' but hey, we are still talking about a phone here.
So i say that the 4 inch X10 display is great and i think is the maximum i would like on my phone.
I was reading the other thread about the X10 and the Streak and saw this review with a video of the Streak (http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/06/dell-streak-review/ )
At the end of the video they show us how it fits your pants and how you look when talking on the phone.
I personaly think it is a bit odd.
So i would like to see how everybody feels about the screen size, aspect ratio and if you would like to see bigger displays on a phone.
I think 3.7 to 4.0" is ideal, any smaller, and my fingers can't press the right buttons lol.
To me the aspect ratio is more important, the 4" 16:9 display on the X10 is optimal imo.
4" 16:9 screen and some added borders by the phone itself is the limit for a phone in my opinion. Anything bigger I would see as a tablet computer.
Some say the X10 are too big. I'd say those saying that, are the small people with cute little hands.
I'm a rather big dude myself and I find the X10 fit perfectly into my hand and I can operate the phone onehanded, but I prefer one hand holding, the other pointing.

I'm rather average guy, so average that they could probably use my hands to design stuff for "average-sized hands" and I find the the X10 to be perfect. No one I've encountered has any problems using the phone, except maybe dad but he's an old car mechanic and couldn't use a touchscreen if his life depended on it.
It's just right for me, using my Garmin Nuvi with a 5" screen for comparison, 4" is perfect. Phones are supposed to be "mobile" these days, anything bigger would be borderline pocket PC and just too much bulk in the pocket to be called a mobile.
for me it can be bigger a bit
4.5' should be the best for me
most important is the resolution need increase
previously there's a thread talking about resolution is good enough
but it's obviously losing when i compare to my x1

The X10 has a higher resolution than the X1 and has even slightly higher than most other phones.

yes but as the screen on the x1 is so much smaller (3in), the pixel size is also reduced and as such it looks sharper. so if you cut off an inch of the x10s display, the x1 would have a higher res.
i.e. hd films on the x1 looked amazing. just small
same difference between a 1920x1080 17" laptop screen and 1920x1200 24" desktop screen. the 24" is higher res, but the laptop will look sharper.

So what you really meant was that the X1 has a higher DPI. Yeah, that is a good point, but on the other hand the X10 display does more colours and the added size helps when reading text because you don't have to zoom in as much as with a smaller display to see it clearly. So there are good points and bad points to each, I prefer a bigger screen but YMMV.

Heh, must've misread somewhere along the cross-fire. I'm blaming the 40C heat here.
haha ok it was me who said resolution.
anyway my point is in the "previous post" i mentioned many guys said very firmly that the DPI of X10 is good enough, any higher DPI won't make it different, and in the same thread people point out than x1 got the same DPI as iphone4.
but the fact is when you comparing it side by side you'll spot the different even your eye is 30cm away from the device.

I'd say that's a valid point, "good enough" is just that. It's a phone ffs, it's not like you're spend spend hours staring at the screen or reading any longer books on it anyway. I have to look at the screen from about two or centimeters away to see any individual pixels or even notice any pixeling for that matter. For it's purpose it's more than good enough.
If I want to watch movies comfortably the screen has to be much, much bigger anyway and if you want to read a lot then you should get an e-ink display. For casual webbrowsing, making calls and listening to music this display is just fine.
yap it's good enough but can be better.
though it's not gonna happen in x10 hopefully for next SE flagship.
i am a SE fanboy with high expectations

4" is ok.
4.3" or 4.5" would be better.
Bigger, no way.
All things considered I think 4 is great. 4.3 or 4.5 would be nicer but higher battery drain.
I guess a 4.5 AMOLED would still be better on the battery than a 4.0 LCD.

5.3" Sammy Galaxy Q tab/phone coming?

here's the link..
http://pocketnow.com/android/samsung-prepping-galaxy-q-with-huge-53-inch-display-for-ifa
No specs confirmed. lets start what we thnk it will have..
Super AMOLED.. sounds nice.
I would bet it gets an 8MP, hoping for maore than 1.3 front cam with all the video chat services available.
dual-core would make this thing very popular. Form factor will be a major point.
Honestly, Dell Streak innovate this and no one will come with a better idea. 5" exactly fit the pocket any extra will be too much.
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
5.3 might be a little too big...a friend of mine just got the 4.5" samsung infuse and it's a very nice size. 4.5-5" is the range I want.
you could technically increase the screen size of a phone to 5.3 without making the actual phone bigger in size than the streak, the side panels on either side of the streak are very big and could be utilised for extra screen realestate imo.
I will definitely jump on this one if all the specs are good. We will need dual core on this one!

exactly, who needs bezel? I mean sure, we need speakers and a mic and front cam, but all of that is already so small. Iam one for a minimalistic bezel look.
If it is good size/design I will be interested.
Sammy and TouchWiz.. not so much so, but there latest version should be nice to fiddle with for a while, something new for a change.
what resolution would they do with a .3" larger display??
960x540 probably.

I agree could be a very promising phone, to be honest I think you could get an extra inch screen size out the streak cause the bezel on each side and the top and bottom, would easily make up another inch. 6 inch screen!!!!!
But I think the streak is the perfect size, if the phone was any bigger it wouldn't fit in your pocket.
So more screen same size!!! :-D
Bezel
Streak could have that if they make the capacitive buttons on screen, and do away with the top & bottom bezel. There is a good .5" of wasted space on the streak.
I'm keeping my eye on this rumor. If it pans out, might be my streak replacement (sorry Dell...you didn't know what you had!)
Actually, the glass on the Streak is just a hair under 5.5 inches diagonal, so if they could make the display edge to edge, they could beat the Samsung without changing the form factor at all.

This could be Streak successor. It is true, that the screen can be actually bigger and device maybe even smaller then Streak, so let's wait for some pictures, specifications etc.
On the other hand, I hear somewhere that it should have querty keyboard which might be nice but then it might not be thin like Streak.
But then, think about support for this phone! Released drivers, kernels etc., so custom roms development will be much easier and there will be probably better support from apps developers (because Samsung will actually do some marketing for this tablet/phone unlike Dell).
Anyway, I probably won't have money to buy it
So long as it's not ****ty shiny plastic like every other Samsung/LG phone I'm happy.
I want quality metals/aluminium like Dell/HTC then it would have me interested.

Pro-Hero screen size article

http://www.carrypad.com/2011/08/12/a-critical-look-at-the-interface-and-ergonomics-of-android/all/1/
Interesting article and the main reason none of the newer, more powerful phones interest me.
While i kind of agree with this guy, I've been annoyed by the small size of the screen on the Hero many times. When you want to check something quickly on your phone, the small screen size is fine. However, when you're using the phone to pass time (browsing the web while on road trips etc.) it can be really annoying to have a small screen. You have to constantly use your fingers to scroll up and down when reading, and viewing any sort of graphs is impossible. Bigger screens are usually better for gaming aswell, since you can see details better, and touch controls get bigger.
I am not happy,I can't do anything ..
thats why i choosed desire hd over se arc cauz of it's screen ratio ,, to long that you cant manage it with one hand at all , and you know , playing with your phone while you driving with your 2 hands = go to hell !
good info. thanks
The screen size is slightly thinner than an iPhone's by about 5mm, and some people might find it harder to type with because of that, but IMO, the screen size is just right. I can't imagine carrying around a phone with a 4.3" screen in my front pocket.
i think the best screensize is 3.7 -4.0 inch screens, i want the size because i surf a lot, but i still want it to be pretty portable
I agree somewhat with the article, but I do find I want my Hero screen to be bigger. Maybe the size of the original Desire. But the larger screens do look nice too.
Ultimately, you will all be tempted by the big touchscreen. Join the dark side.
Look at this all craze, manufacturers are testing even bigger sizes, +5inch, and along with the tablet spree, it looks like searching for the perfect size, perfect ratio.
A company with a fruit in it's logo knew it all along. 3.5 inch for a phone, 10 inch for a tab. Ekhm..
I'm just gonna playa smartass prophet and say that android tablets are gonna get bigger too. 12 inch, maybe 13 inch. But I doubt if much more without a breakthrough in battery technology. Li-ons would really suck on 13 inch tab, quad core.

6" sounds about right, as long as they can minimize dimension increases by using a smaller bezel. In bed at night when reading ebooks or browsing the web, I hold the phone between my thumb and middle finger, pinching from top to bottom (large hands), and can barely do it with the Note, so don't want any larger height. Also, the weight's about at the limit for tiring my fingers over extended reading periods.
I'd be inclined for it to go somewhat smaller at 5"
and also change the res to 1280x720, cutting 10% off the width.
Are you guys crazy? Here's the size of an 5,7". It's looks so much bigger than 5,3! :0

Huge bezels on that e-reader make a big difference, but on second thought holding my fingers up to my screen making it 6 inches loss pretty big. I think 5.5" is more reasonably possible without increasing outside dimensions too much.
Yeah, ANYTHING bigger than 5'' is too big and will not fit in the pockets, it's pointless.
The BIGGEST size phone I'd buy is 5.5'' as something larger will not fit in my pockets & is therefore useless to me.
I like a device similar to the Note which is a balance between a smart phone & a tablet both in one.
It MUST fit in my pocket. The Note just about fits so people that are happy with a 6'' device will find it difficult fitting it in MOST of their clothes!
I think the Note is physically about as big as you can get before crossing into the Tablet space.
The niche of the Note is pockatable phone tablet.
The line is very narrow.
The Note is probably pushing the limits already. I bet the largest demographic for the Note is men... Because we're comfortable with the size. Most women wont be.

+ 1 It fits in my pocket, but it's tight, and difficult to get out if I'm not standing up. Just a hair smaller would help, but still bigger than the nexus.
I would go 5.5 inches at the most. I am pretty happy with the screen size. I'd love a 5.5 inch version, the same physical size but with smaller Bezels, mated to a quad core CPU, LTE, NFC, and a 4000mah battery. Also, a notification light would rock.

I agree - if it was exact 720p it would be narrower - the LG Nitro HD is only 68 mm wide, barely wider than the Atrix 2.
Anything 70 mm wide or less would be much easier to handle one-handed. The 83 mm width of my Note is quite daunting. I love everything else about it, or I would switch to the Nitro HD. If SG II HD LTE would only come with S-Pen, it would be my dream device ATM.
So screen size of 4.5" to 5", with 1280x720, would be the sweet spot for me!
I am used to the HTC 4.3 phone for about 2 years and switching to Galaxy Note is not problematic for me at all. I love the beautiful screen and the size is also an upgrade and moving toward a small Tablet territory. I like to read and watch video and also surf the net. This size appear quite good for those. I would not mind having a slightly bigger screen up to 6 inches as long as it as thin and remain fairly portable.
This Galaxy Note is so good that it is a mini version of the Tablet. It serves my needs for the time being and remain portable and still function as a phone - 2 very big pluses for this device. I can skip getting a tablet now.
I like big screen & i think this is the biggest it should be for note. If too big, it will be pain in the ass to carry every way..haha..

The Galaxy Note confirms it: people want larger screens

A good article.

It jokes about the "optimal" iphone 3.5 incher.
YES. People like Galaxy Note.
Sent from the galaxy far far away.
This is so true. At first i thought "damit is that thing big, i should bring it back to store" but when i put it in my pocket it fits and i can walk run and jump with the note in my pocket. So for me its the best phone ever until now iv'e ever had. I love the scree size, if i compare it to the holy iphone i have to laugh everytime about the size..... Its so cute this little iphone thing. I could give it to childrens who can play with it in a sandbox.
Exactly. Those "tech bloggers" should be making fun of people trying to use their "revolutionary" smartphone's functions on a tiny, heavy and fragile 3.5 incher instead...
I hardly ever played any games on my EVO but thats all I do on my Note!!
It simply kicks ass!! Fun times!!
All the reviewers are Jabronis.....perfect size the note is ....especially if you have big hands like me ....cant stand anything else will never go back.....
On-screen controls in games always felt wrong on those small 3.5" phones.. on the S2 they felt better.. on the note they make sense..
sure smaller is sometimes better.. but when packing all this power into a device biggish is good
5.3" aint that big either, just a tad bigger then my wallet but alot thinner.
i followed some links in that blogg and came onto another planet where i was told the android UI makes us need larger screens cos else we wouldn't see anything if android got higher res.. font-size? bigger icons? felt like easy fixes...
kinda feels like iphonE lovers just digs deeper and deeper into something to hold on to.. to make them feel "i did the right choice, my phone is the best"
sad truth is my sister loves the Note but felt she couldn't buy it cos its to big.. she would feel looked at and laughed at.. so she settled with the S2.
i often tell ppl if they are not into computers, etc when they ask if they should buy an iphone or Note to buy an iphone, the safe no-one will laugh at your choice and no-one will question why. its kinda like putting on pants, no one will ask you why.
sorry for the rant..

Agreed, but only if the kept the same form factor as they have now, but getting the screen bigger by stretching it all the way to the edges, in other words, almost no bezel.
i remember a point when I said 5" is the most any phone should go to. well, now I do believe the limit is 6" since anything bigger than that is a tablet fully at that point.
man i want a 6" phone or a SAMOLED+ HD tablet with telephony
I have to admit - i bought the Note without trying it first. When it arrived, i unboxed it and was terrified...
My first impression ? Oh my god, what have i done...but it took two days of using - and now i don't even notice the size. What's more - i don't really mind the size anymore, it feels normal, and is very useful.
iPhone's 3,5" was nice - 3-4 years ago. After that i moved to 4,3" HD7 and now to 5,3" Note. Bigger IS better here, especially with superior AMOLED screen.

This is more a rant than an article.
The note does not confirm that "people want larger screens". What it confirms is that some people want larger screens.
The claim that "Android phones go for the larger screen" is also not correct. There are many Android phone manufacturers and many models, of all shapes and sizes. Search using gsmarena finds 185 Android models with sceeen of size 3.2" or smaller.
I've got the largest hands in the whole town so the NOTE feels average to me.
Sometimes I even think, maybe this should be a little larger like 5.5inches. But now I've equipped the NOTE with the TPU case. Its quite protective, has a very grippy sides and it has a KICKSTAND!!!
But with the case on, I have some trouble slipping it into some pockets (jeans mainly).
So after pondering a bit, I think Samsung should make the NOTE with a kickstand, and shave off the bezel from the top and bottom portions.
OR
Make it smaller (from 147 x 83mm; 5.3inch) to 145mm x 79mm (shorter, little less wide, 5.1inch). It needs to shave off some of the bezel, for the premium aspects.
Though my biggest problems is that:
-Back and Menu buttons should be physical (its too damn easy to accidentally press them; frustrating when you accidentally exit an App and have to start from scratch)
-They should position the volume rocker on the right side and make it clickier (like the Nexus S)
-They should position the power button on the top and make it larger and clikier (like the Nexus S)
-Trade the position of Back and Menu button; and hitting the Menu button should bring the contexual menu's on the bottom and the search bar on the top.
If Samsung hired me for a prototype, my device would outsell any competitors!
I'm also for shaving off the Bezels but to have instead a larger screen by keeping the same overall size.

---What are your thoughts on the kickstand?
Should it be on the device, or on the case?
(If its on the case, it means you need to use a case, meaning the overall size is increased and its harder to draw/place into pockets.)
---What are your thoughts on the Navigational Buttons?
On-screen? all physical? all capacitive? or have the Home physical and the rest capacitive?

I think the idea of 6 inches with the same form factor is great all they would then need to do is increase the resolution as the pixel density will not compete with the likes of Sony Arc S or some of the other 4-4.5 HD screens.
If they did both of these and then made even better stylus apps and support. Then I think it would be game over even for some of the tablet market.
One a separate NOTE, does anyone know if the Note2 is confirmed?

Should it be on the device, or on the case?
(If its on the case, it means you need to use a case, meaning the overall size is increased and its harder to draw/place into pockets.)

On-screen? all physical? all capacitive? or have the Home physical and the rest capacitive?

I had a kickstand on my HD7. Thought it was nice - at first. Later on...i never even used it. Phone would just fall down, and it was impossible to use it with any cable connected ( earphones ) cause it would - again - fall.
I like the idea of a kickstand, but i think it might be a bit hard to make it stable enough on such a large phone.
