What's your favourite mail client? - Galaxy S I9000 General

Guys,
I find the stock mail client unbearably slow, and have been using my iPad to check mails. I like to be able to use my SGS to do that with a best of bread email client on Android. So, would you mind telling me which is the best ones that you're aware of?
Thanks and cheers!

Thanks. What do you like most about it?

here's the link for other just joining this conversation
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/
it's an open source app.
Viva open source !!!!!!
another great open source app for android is open VNC client for android, there is a link already in the App section of the SGS forum

My initial impression of it is good. I like the gesture based navigation from mail to mail. The performance is way better buy can still be improved I guess. I wish they have the option to show only the specified number of lines without then while mail somas to speed it up. User could download the entire things manually.

I tried k9 a few times and found it unbearably slow. It takes up to 30s to open every email. Sometimes the loading hangs and I have to reload the mail. Anyone knows why? I am using maildroid and I find it to be pretty snappy. But look and feel can be better.
Actually I dun find the stock mail client slow at all. I may go back to that.

Slow in what? K9 is never slow for me.

I don't have any non-googlemail account so use stock gmail app which I find functional enough.

Maildroid seems to be the fastest of the lot but I've problem setting up my bigpond email account. Incoming server passes validation but not the outgoing server.I'm using iprimus australia. I've entered these:
server: smtp.iprimus.com.au
Name: my email
Password: correct password was entered
security: ssl
Port: 25
On my ipad, I didn't have to enter the user name and password and it works there.
But using maildroid, it does not work regardless of whether I enter these two pieces of info or not.
I've no problem with yahoo, hotmail, or gmail accounts.

Email Delay

I'm having troubles with pop email accounts, I'm not being notified for new emails, they do not show up in my inbox until i manually open the email client - I have my client to auto check every 5 minutes, yet if I don't check for half a day and then login I have emails from all times of the day being loaded into my inbox.
my friend is having the issue, was wondering if anyone else was?
It's with hotmail, yahoo and ever business emails servers.
suggestions?
Thanks in advanced
nobody noticed that there email isn't polling when it should be?
If you are using an app-killer, make sure your email app isnt killed with it, since that would eliminate the option to auto-fetch emails.

Im sure yore battery life wont last 2 days. and why did you setup pop3? Go for Imap it saves resources and disk space.
Let your computer do POP3 work.
no appkiller of any kind installed

On the first day I got the phone, before doing anything (root) to it, I also noticed that it didn't poll. Had it set for 5 minutes, background data on and it did nothing. Never polled once all day.
So rather than waste my time with something (else) from SE that didn't work I just installed K-9 Mail and never looked backed since

I prefer to reply or send emails from my actual email account, I did use k9 for a while and it was working and i do like all the additional advanced features it offers. All I need is basic send/receive from a basic client and the android email app is suppose to work like that.
thanks so far guys

The regular email client is a bit lacking. Your issue isn't common though. Must be just missing something in the setting somewhere...if not you could always do the total reset on the phone i guess if you really had too.
I recently just caved in and made the full switch to Gmail for all of my accounts. Much easier to manage. It IS full push email I believe, plus imap makes things so much easier it's not even comparible.
It's too bad the gmail app on the phone won't let you send from multiple addys, but the web interface is good for sending from a diff addy in a pinch.

Just checked it today, App killer was set for auto kill after a hour. Disabled, now push email works.....

Vibrant default mail client (Exchange, etc.)

Does anyone know who makes the default "Email" named client that ships with the Vibrant? Is that a Samsung app, Google app, or other? I ask because it seems to be *dog slow* doing even the simplest of things -- opening a message, refreshing, deleting, etc.. Has everyone else noticed this? Any fixes? In contrast, the built-in Gmail app is super-speedy.
On that note, is there a better Exchange-enabled client that I can install on this phone? Can the Android 2.1 client be ported to this phone? I need Exchange (mail, calendar, contacts) sync support. Also, I don't want to use Touchdown.
Thoughts?

Touchdown.
Yep, I saw that you said you didn't want to use it.
Touchdown's still my recommendation.
I have no problems getting exchange email in a timely manner via the default client...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
It's not that I *can't* get my Exchange email -- the syncing appears to be working fine. The issue is the client itself: very slow and laggy. The Gmail client, by comparison, is fast and responsive.
Are others seeing the "Email" app slowness as well?
Lastly, does anyone know who makes the included Email app? Google? Samsung?
the default exchange client in the nexus had zero lag.

It also can't display HTML messages, doesn't highlight complicated URLs correctly (ones with & or = symbols), and has no copy & paste. At least, not from what I can tell.

I have not had a problem with the default email program. It has been fast and syncs all my email that I want it to. I did increase the size of the mail since our work uses a jpeg as a sig.

I second this. Anyway to grab the Nexus One mail client and install onto the Vibrant?
Have you tried K-9 mail?
I hate the default email app. Tried touchdown but it is not great. I switched to Google apps for business and migrated from my exchange server and I'm much happier all around.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I agree. I just moved my exchange to google apps for business too.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yes, Google Apps is a fine solution, and I'm using that for my *personal* email, but my work uses Exchange 2007.
Anyhow, I'm trying out K9 Mail and MailDroid, though I can't get either of them to connect just yet. I'll keep trying.
Otherwise, this really looks like a "wait until Froyo" situation, since the initial 2.1 solution didn't support Exchange calendar syncing. Version 2.2 should have what we need.
Hurry up and wait
K-9 is much better, although it randomly goes for long amounts of time without getting some email, even though I can get them on my computer.
If it's mission criticle to get your emails on time, it's not very reliable, unfortunately (neither is the stck client).
WHOA! Hold the phone (no pun intended)...
I was looking at the "stalling" issues threads, and came across this *FIX* (Method 1) that was pretty easy to do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=727279
Assuming that you're rooted, just install Busybox and Terminal Emulator (from the Marketplace). Alternately, you can use ADB from your computer, though I've never been able to get this to work. I was able to complete these commands directly on my phone from the emulator and reboot.
Anyhow, after applying this change, the default mail app is ABSOLUTELY FLYING. I kid you not. Just as fast as the Gmail client, if not somewhat faster. Really amazing. To be honest, the entire phone is much, much faster all around -- not just this mail client.
The downside? Well... technically the "app data space" is limited after this update, but I was only using 28megs (of 130megs total). Not too concerned. On that note, they give you the command to check your app data space, if you're wondering.
So....I am absolutely good for now. Happy with the mail clients and their performance.
Awesome!
Thanks for your help, everyone.

The e-mail app in Android 2.2 is pretty great, I was running it on my G1 before I switched up to a Vibrant last week.
The e-mail clients from Google (before 2.2) were/are dismal, but I'm pretty sure they hired Marc Blanc, the guy who wrote the excellent ChatterMail client for the Palm Treo, who then went on to begin developing AndroidMail in 2009. I was a beta tester for AndroidMail, and in the middle of the beta he announced Google was soliciting his input about some sort of secret project. There was never another AndroidMail update after that, much to my dismay.
Then about eight months later I got my hands on the Froyo e-mail client in CyanogenMod6, and I had this nagging feeling I'd seen it somewhere before. Eventually I realized it looks like a super-polished version of what Marc was doing in ChatterMail and AndroidMail.
This is huge for me, because the problems in earlier Android e-mail apps were becoming a serious problem.
So my recommendation would be to sit tight, 2.2 is just around the corner...
For what it's worth, I don't see any slow down or lag with the Exchange client. It is just as responsive as the GMail client and everything else on the phone.

Glad to hear it... but clearly I am *NOT ALONE* on this issue: there was some serious lag going on specifically with the default mail client. To the point that I really tried to avoid checking the email in that client at all, if I could avoid it. It was really, really slow....and the Gmail app was snappy & fast.
Anyhow, the "fix" I posted has totally resolved that issue, as well as speeding up a number of other apps/functions. Really amazing!
Out of curiosity, did you ever apply a "factory reset" that many folks seem to recommend? I never did.
Nope. No factory resets. No lag fixes. No GPS fixes. Only thing I have done is root and install Clockwork. Everything has been working great for me since day one. Guess I got lucky.

Gmail IMAP server down

I normally use the Email app instead of the Gmail app to access my Gmail (uses IMAP). However, sometime tonight, I found I can't connect to the server anymore. Any of you checking your Gmail through the Email app and seeing the same thing?
When I try to check my Gmail through the E-mail all/IMAP, I get the following error: "Cannot connect to server. (Expected string, none found.)"
I have the same problem. When I try to download my e-mails thru Mozilla Thunderbird it doesn't seem to work either.. Very annoying..
Trying to check my Gmail through the email app it just said connection error. Deleted the account and now I keep getting Cannot connect to server. (Expected string, none found.)
IMAP Issues
As previously reported and as at 09:50am 25th May (UK Time) the IMAP servers at Google still seem to be down....
However the POP3 servers seems fine . Its a pain but you can (as I have) just reset up the Email client to use POP3.....
L
Still down...
Yes, I too cannot connect via IMAP on my Samsung Galaxy S.
Isit working now? because I don't seem to be having any problems with the Samsung E-mail app as I've been receiving push messages all day.
Nope
No, I'm afraid there's no change.
G.
Well I don't see what the problem is as mine works fine.
Can you explain what you mean by "Samsung Email app"? I am using "Enhanced Mail" a tweaked version of POP/IMAP app that comes with the phone...

not getting the error on my phone Samsung Galaxy using K9 or on my pc with outlook.

If you mean the stock E-mail app that comes with the SGS2 besides the official gmail app then yes that is what I'am using and as tony also pointed out, my IMAP works just fine.
You guys are spreading false info.
1. If you claim Gmail IMAP global server is down... please, let's see some proof!
EE is the only application as far as I know having any issues. My Evo stock email and K-9 are having no problems with Gmail Imap, nor is my PC running Outlook '10.
So please don't post this, you have the EE dev now believing Gmail has a problem, it's actually some specific apps.

To everyone saying gmail imap is not down this is OBVIOUSLY going to be location specific since gmail has a different server for almost every part of the world.
Here is proof that it is NOT accessible even from a pc
Code:
$ telnet imap.gmail.com 143
Trying 74.125.159.109...
telnet: connect to address 74.125.159.109: Operation timed out
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host
For the dissenters, this isn't an isolated issue. I started a post on Android support forum less than 12 hours ago, and as of this morning, TONS of people are seeing this issue. And for several, they are seeing this issue since last night, which is exactly my situation as I had 0 problems previously:

My Push Hotmail account and IMAP Yahoo account are working perfectly btw.
Lastly, how are you setting up Push E-mail through the stock E-mail app for Gmail? From what I can tell, the Gmail IMAP setup is Pull only, if you're using a Push method, please do share.

When in mail, hit the "settings" button, the soft-touch button next to the middle one, when the settings menu pop-up, hit "more" and then go to "Account settings", in the "email check frequency", you can set to every 5 minutes.
I don't think that's what he wants. Checking every 5 minutes means the email app asks the server if there are new mails. He wants to use the push method of googlemail. With this method the server should tell the app there is a new mail without asking before. This is the technic blackberry uses.
It's just like SMS. These technic consumes less power and causes lower traffic.

Then probably an activesync issue and not really a Note-related issue? Should probably bring it up with the app developers. I was assuming he meant the stock Email app that came with the Note.
I have found all emails to be very slow on my new Samsung Note. Whether it be Yahoo or Gmail. At the moment my Gmail says "Your Email will appear shortly". Waited for 5 minutes and still no email.
Yahoo and Mac emails on Note are also very slow to load. On my iPhone 4 on the other hand are very very fast and load instantly.
Tried the Samsung email app. Even the minimum 5 minute interval was annoying.
Returned to the gmail app and get mail instantaneously. Not a necessity, but quite convenient.
Go to the Market and get an app called: Microsoft + Seven, this is the official Microsoft Android mail application. This will do everything you want from the Exchange but much better. Exchange push is flawed from the server side.
I have both installed while + Seven fetches instantly the Exchange sometimes fails to do so.

Is there any updates on why emails are slow to load on the Samsung Note? On my iPhone 4 and Blackberry Bold 9900 emails download very fast with pretty much no waiting while with this Samsung Note it seems like it takes ages to download Yahoo and MAC emails.
How did you setup your gmail through the stock email client? IMAP or exchange?
As for push mail service, my company exchange emails are pushed out instantly without any issues exception of no new email notifications if the email app is open

I agree with the above. The push notifications are in my experience temperamental. Sometimes I get push for my e-mails, facebook and other times there is a very long delay and sometimes I have to open the application before anything shows up.
I've never used blackberry but push used to work nearly flawlessly with my old iphone 3GS (although the iphone e-mail client has many other drawbacks IMHO). I used to get notifications for e-mails instantly.
It is a real shame because I use e-mails a lot for my working life. I have found TouchDown and Moxier Mail to also have flaws and significant battery drain in comparison to stock so don't wish to spend that kind of money on those applications.

I am having similar problems with my Note and push email. It worked flawlessly on my HTC EVO. Both are running Gingerbread.
Agreed
Push email on all android (not just the Note) seems to be lagging. I wish there was a solution. With my Note, if I click in inbox, then it is forced to check email. Push email works great on blackberry and apple.
Any solutions will be greatly appreciated. Will ICS improve this any?
Not having problems with the PUSH in Microsoft Outlook Activesync email and Gmail here. Even Facebook push notifications work like charm and PUSH comes as the emails and/or notifications arrive. I actually observed this while using my laptop.

[Q] Galaxy S4 Stock Email App. So many flaws?

Got my new Galaxy S4. What is up with the email app? are you able to have it push email? i dont want it to poll every 5 minutes, i need my emails instantly...
I turned on sync in the email app, which apparently this is not push, anyways, throughout the day when i open the email app i get a popup saying email sync disabled. Why?
Can anyone confirm that the search function works?? I have my email set up as an imap account, whenever i want to search something in my email i get 0 results, and if i hit the search on server, it does not bring up anything either. This happens with all my email accounts on my phone, and my wife's accounts on her GS4. Any idea why??
I have a rooted S4, not using a custom rom. I have tried K9 email but it is just plain ugly. I actually like how the stock email app looks but nothing works!
I searched all over the internet and i dont see anything on most of these issues so im assuming im doing something wrong if nobody else is talking about this. Please, any help would be awesome. My wife wants her iphone back because of this.
I use the stock email app with no issues. I have it set to recieve from my work exchange account, my outlook and gmail accounts. All are push, and all of mine are searchable with no issues.
You may try erasing the account, and then resetting it. I know my outlook account is also an exchange server, but the gmail I think is IMAP. All mine have the check box "sync email" checked, and I set all to push notifications. Be sure you are setting up the account in the email app itself, that may help.

Where do you see the email push setting? only see sync, and whenever i turn on sync, i get a popup a few hours later when i open the app that sync has been disabled. Even when i enable sync, it gives me the option for sync schedule for at most every 15 minutes.
As far as the search, i use godaddy imap and yahoo. I cant search anything out of what is showing when i open the app. It shows me default of i think 25 emails when i open the app and if i scroll to the bottom it starts to load more. When i do a search, it only searches through what is loaded and when i do continue searching on server i get nothing more. The only results is what is in the 25 loaded messages, or 50 messages if i scroll down at let it load more...

The email app on the iphone is far better than the stock email app on the SGS4. I think the stock email app on the SGS4 is utter crap, at least with IMAP. Maybe it works better with exchange. I use Kaiten, which is an upgraded/updated version of K9. Another one that I looked at briefly was AquaMail.

The thing is i actually really like the email app on the GS4. I think the layout is nice and the email app is one of the few times i actually feel that the air view feature is really useful. The problem is, is that it is not reliable. I need my emails instantly and the email app is not getting it for me. I just figured out the search problem i was having. If i just change in the settings messages to load from 25 to "total" all of my messages will be there and search is fine. I still wish there is a way to have my emails come instantly rather than every 15 minutes. Aside from the push issue, what else do you dislike about the stock app that the other apps have? The only thing i noticed on the iphone is the push option...

You must be talking about an exchange account. You don't have that option with IMAP.

Four major issues are (and there are other minor issues):
- Lack of IMAP IDLE (push)
- When you reply to someones message, the text in their message is reformatted in your reply (font changes and line spacing changes). Looks unprofessional for work email.
- html hyperlinks are sometimes not properly parsed and are unclickable. I get a news service hyperlinks to articles. None of the hyperlinks work on the stock email client. I have to forward the message to gmail or something to click on the hyperlinks.
- emails sent from stock email client do not sync properly and have a different format on my outlook client.
Kaiten has none of these problems. These are not problems with the iphone app either.

plus, to update on the syncing being disabled. I set the sync to on, reboot my phone, opened the mail app and i get the pop up that says sync disabled. I open the settings and the sync option is no longer checked.
Just tried Kaiten...It was downloading so many copies of my emails. It showed each email at least 4 times...uninstalled...
They are correct, the one I looked at was my Outlook.com email address, and my work address. The gmail address shows the same thing as yours.
I guess the news hasn't gotten around fully. Gmail accounts to do not support push with anything other than the native stock android gmail app anymore (since, when exactly, I don't remember. March or April of this year?). In that particular case, it's not the fault of the Samsung email app. No other app besides the official "gmail" app will receive emails by push from a gmail account, and that includes any email applications on any other system from iphone to any other operating system. Blame gmail.
The only thing I miss by using the stock email app is that I can't get it to come up in the combined inbox by default...I have to select it each time which is a bummer.

when i inserted a telus sim and and unlocked it, it force reset the phone, force factory reset rather, and now i dont have push.
i also picked up some crappy apps from telus
