Freezing in Landscape? - HTC Aria General

I was in the AT&T store earlier today hoping I could do a side by side comparison of the Captivate and the Aria but, of course, AT&T didnt have out the Captivate yet so I just spent time with the Aria.
I loved it. Very smooth and quick with everything. Comfortable keyboard for the size that it is.
One thing I noticed before I was done experimenting with the keyboard and texting is that when I was typing a message landscape, the words weren't showing up, but appeared when I turned to portrait...and then disappeared again when turned landscape.
It only happened at the end of the 15 or 20 mins I was playing with it...but is this a problem others are having with the phone or was the in-store phone just being defective?

That is a problem that i also use to experience, if i text in landscape mode at a fast pace it caused the app to force close. When it auto restarted i couldn't see the text i was typing in landscape mode but when switched to portrait mode the text would appear. I have since stopped texting in landscape mode since texting in portrait mode is just as fast as long as you hit the first letter of the word correctly.
I have not had the issue since flashing the liberated B003 rom though. Also I do not know if it was something running in the background causing this to crash before i flashed but for me the problem no longer exist.
But thats just one of the few problems you will discover with this phone

Thanks! Hopefully going to pick up a Captivate as long as it performs like I hope. Otherwise I will be joining all of you here in the Aria forums!

Kind of a dead thread but I'm bringing it back to ask...
How many of you have also experienced this problem with the phone? Is it a large majority?

Thank you. Hope some more people respond so that I can see how many people experience this problem so I can try to decide between this and the captivate

I spoke too soon, the issue is happening again, seems to happen after typing long texts.
I get the error "the application Touch Input (process com.htc.android.htcime) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." [Force close]

do you use the stock keyboard as opposed to swype, swiftkey, or the droidx?

stock keyboard.

That might be the silence then. You might want to see if the problem persists with a different keyboard. For landscape I suggest the droidx multitouch.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App

I too have the same issue - many times. Stock ROM, non rooted.

I'm going to mosey on over here for the Nexus forum to vouch this issue for my sister. She just got the Aria about 2 weeks ago and her keyboard freezes on her in landscape mode constantly. If she goes into Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/ and selects the keyboard then chooses 'Clear Data' it seems to bring it back up without her having to restart her phone. Another option I've found while scouring the internet has been that if you disable predictive text on the keyboard (Under Settings/Language and Keyboard/Touch Input/Text Input/Prediction) it seems to fix the issue... but you of course lose predictive text. Which, if you ask me, is a huge issue given the cramped keyboard on the Aria. I can't confirm if removing the predictive text option works yet or not, but if she lets me know, I'll be sure to let you folks know.
[edit]I should probably state that shes on Stock AT&T Rom with non-root and she plans to stay that way... unless I convince her to hand the phone to me for a few hours)[/edit]

I should also probably state that this issue does not occur using the swiftkey keyboard from the market. One could argue just using that instead, but I personally don't like swiftkey and frankly the default keyboard should work! Lol.

So far turning off predictive text has fixed it. My sister has gone all day without a freeze up. And it was occurring almost every time she texted.

Day 3 and her keyboard still hasn't froze since she turned off predictive text. I think the may be a solution. But now HTC needs to release a fix for this lol. Hopefully the aria gets a 2.2 update and this is resolved. Wishful thinking I guess.

How serious is your device freezing/hanging problem?

The title says it all. This is a survey to gauge the magnitude of the problem among the early adopters of Touch HD.
Please cast your vote only after you have AT LEAST 1 WEEK of experience using the device.
Thanks and cheers.
Mine hangs quite often, when typing SMS very fast. Also it hangs constantly, when browsing in landscape mode with opera. Very, very annoying.

Tried hard reset? Tried reflashing the ROM? Tried getting a replacement?
Mine hangs often but I can live with it as it is my secondary device and I don't use it much.
Mine hangs occasionally but i found most of the times was "Active Sync" fault, simply close it and it stops hanging
So far, more than 50% of you are saying it never hang even once. This is amazing! I had never thought in my widest dream that it is so good.
I've mine since the 5th of November... so it's about 3 weeks today... and I’ve already forgotten where is the Soft Reset button...
I think that you should include in the poll, another option, something like the 2nd and 3rd options, but that it bothers us.
Since we paid a lot of money for HD and it does not work as it should, it is really annoying and it bothers us.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortuntely, posters are not able to make this change. Can our moderator help?
Never
I clicked 'never hangs'.
Strictly not true. Have found that if CorePlayer is open, and i try to manually switch off, it won't. Subsequent attempts also fail (even after closing CP), and the only fix is to press the power button a few seconds and turn off. (i guess this is one 'below' a soft-reset but dunno).
Also strange is that if it auto-shuts down with CP open, generally it turns off, but when turned on CorePlayer has no video, and must be closed and opened to fix.
i guess the 2 issues are related to Coreplayer's incomplete Qtv driver - and will be soon fixed.
Else has never hung (2 weeks use) which is brilliant compared to my last PDA (ipaq) - tho' it was often the fingerprint reader that hung. btw i would pay more for the HD with biometric security. i think this is needed, given the amount/type of data most people have on their devices it should nearly be illegal to make 'em without .
I've select never, however I've had a couple of application issues... 1 with network settings and the other with a 3rd party application which both caused application crashes.
How are you defining a hang? WinMo crash screen (application dies) or device becomes unusable and requires a soft reset? My phone has never crashed that bad I've never had to reset it.

Freezes. Not responding to user action, or so slow and unuseable that it requires a soft reset.
So far, one out of four are reporting that freezing occurs frequently, but more than 90% of us are not bothered by this. Any more vote?
Interesting poll!
But i have to mention, i'm absolutly sure the freezing problem is on every HD. It's just a question of the installed software, the running applications and their kind of use.
If i play the whole day SPB sudoku i have not to report any freezings and i'm lucky. But the HD turns me crazy while writing the whole day SMS with permanent freezes.
Just a joke!
surely all these freezing problems will be fixed once we get cooked roms?

On my Athena, the freezing problem largely disappeared with ROM updates from HTC, but the cooked ROM were far more stable.
So, I believe the same will happen here.
I've had mine for a week now and get regular freezes - mostly when using opera and particularly with opera in landscape mode. Also get freezes when typeing emails although these usually sort themselves out if I'm prepared to wait a while. Every now and again it seems like the wireless connection stops working (i.e. the progress bar for loading a page freezes and won't load any further although all the other apps seem to be ok) - soft reset seems to solve each time.
The most annoying problem for me though at the moment is that I have to close all applications before connecting to my laptop via usb or the running apps just crash as soon as it connects - again probably an activesync issue I guess.
I have never used a cooked rom before but you guys seem to swear by them so hopefully one will come out which sorts these issues - or maybe HTC will post an update.

potential Freezing solution-worked for me
Don't laugh......this has worked for me. Go into Settings-systems-screen-clear type-uncheck enable clear type
I also have no aftermarket keyboard loaded-just using what came with device....no more freezing during SMS.
I cant get the auto name feature to dump into the SMS or email field when I type the name though

Is there a way to reload the keyboard after it force closes in landscape mode? Other than restarting the phone?

I am using B003 and when I am in landscape typing, I get an error sometimes saying the keyboard had a problem. I can still type, but the text won't show up. But if I switch to portrait, then I can see the text I typed while in landscape and I can also type normally while in portrait (meaning I can see the text I type). But if I go back to landscape, again, I can type, but it won't show up in landscape and it will in portrait. This happened to me 4 times today. I think it fixed itself or I had to turn phone off and back on.

Yeah, I am on stock rom at the moment. It did it quite a few times on me last night, and it was a pain in the A!
I read a lot of posts where people are mentioning this issue. Personally I have not experienced any force closes on landscape or portrait mode while typing, however I do notice the keyboard can get very laggy at times when in landscape mode.

there are instances where it will force close, and you can see the auto correct type come up, and until you put a , or a . in the sentence and hit space, it will show up the text as well...
pain in the a!!!
It happened to me again and I think I might have isolated the problem. This keeps happeing to me when I type a long message in landscape. Usually when I think the 170 mark, it will crash on me.
Its not that isolated, seems to happen more ofter when you type long messages.

Here is another item I noticed today because I texted a lot today during work and it crashed on me multiple times. I do the Clear Data rather than reset the phone and each time, I noticed that the data is at 68 kb. Could this have something to do with it? Anyway to test and see if the 68 kb has anything to do with the crash?

Swype Problem

My girlfriend has a Vibrant and today her swype has stopped working.
When you press an input field it sometimes pops up with the keyboard momentarily but quickly goes away OR the keyboard does not come up at all.
Tried to restart. Try to reinstall. Nothing works. Tried multiple applications with the same result.
She did receive the OTA if that makes a difference.
Anyone else encountering this problem? Any ideas to fix it?
Have you swapped to another input method?
Try changing to Samsung kb, rebooting, then changing back to Swype.
Have you done anything to the phone? Root, lagfix, etc.?

I'm having a problem too, but not like this. My Swype is severely screwed up. Its laggy as hell and the trace line appears all jagged and not in a straight line. The words that it suggest are plain retarded. I Swyped Charger and it suggested Xylophone. This all happened after the update. Sometimes in the middle of me Swyping, the Swype Tips box pops up out of no where. I am Rooted and have done the lag fix. Maybe I will reverse both and see what happens.

[Q] really bad keyboard lag and crashing since update

I've been fighting this on and off since the MF9 update. Originally I thought I just had bad reception where I was at the time but now, even with wifi and 4g network I still get this.
Basically I'll be typing...could be Galaxy keyboard OR SWYPE and suddenly the keyboard will stop responding. Even if I hit the "home" button to get out the app (usually I notice this in web browser but it doesn't appear to be app-related) the keyboard overlay will persist and can't be killed. I can make it go away by pulling down the notification bar where the "select input method" icon is still displaying and select whichever input method wasn't in use when it hung, but I still won't be able to type anything until the keyboard catches up....sometimes that takes several minutes, sometimes I have to reboot the phone. I noticed that some words or phrases are more likely to cause this lockup than others. Ironically, "galaxy s4" will do it almost every time.
The only way I've found to prevent this from happening is to turn off all predictive features on the keyboard including predictive text and swiftkey. I've tried updating my language and pretty much everything else but nothing works permanently. I can get it to work temporarily by clearing data on the keyboard service too, but it always comes back when it's least convenient (like when I'm trying to enter an address into GPS and in a hurry). This started after the MF9 update. At one point I even did an ODIN wipe and reinstalled from a stock image....still does it.
anyone else getting this?
Yeah, I've been noticing this happening to me lately too. I use the Swype keyboard though. It's quite frustrating.
I've gotten used to the Google keyboard and haven't switched to something else since. Yes, it's not perfect, but it suits my needs.

Screen keeps turning on during a call??

Guys I'm on the latest Nougat update on AT&T with the March update and the most annoying thing started happening out of nowhere... Wondering if y'all have ever seen this and have been able to stop?
Basically, during a call, my screen turns off after my screen timeout time, and within 5 seconds, the screen turns back on and keeps repeating ?...!
Here's what I've tried:
1. Calibrated and tested the proximity sensor.
2. Double checked with or without Smart Awake setting.
3. Cleared data of the in call UI app.
4. Rebooted.
5. Wiped OS Cache.
6. You tell me? ?
Thanks for all the help!
It's a Bug with the In-Call UI
My T-Mobile Galaxy S7 Edge has been experiencing the same issue. I tried everything including a factory reset to no avail. I believe it may have something to do with the In-Call UI system app associated with the Phone App. It only started happening after the 7.0 update and really makes using the phone to make a phone call unnecessarily frustrating. I am guessing more people have this but don't realize it because the screen will turn off if you navigate away from the In-Call UI to another app or to the home screen. It is a bug though and I hope Samsung deals with it in the next update.

Thank you so much for responding. Makes me feel better that I'm not crazy! ?
Can others test and confirm for us so we can maybe document and report to Samsung for a fix?
BTW for what it's worth, as a workaround, you can hit the home button to put the in call UI out of focus and then let the phone sleep, it stops the waking up. Down side of course, no proximity action and the nuisance of turning on, then bringing up UI to mute and unmute, very annoying on meetings for work! :crying:
Any others please test and report for us? Thanks you!

Reread, you already mentioned the workaround, sorry and thanks!
Now I am not sure if this will work for you but I've noticed that if I occasionally use the slide up gesture to launch Samsung pay (i.e. from the lock screen or home screen) and I back out of it, it keeps the problem at bay temporarily. I tried deactivating the slide up to activate feature of Samsung Pay and it didn't fix the issue. For now, this is my temporary work around. I hope it works for you too!

Extremely good observation and another workaround bud! You're right, it provides some relief with the Samsung Pay workaround. I can't believe we haven't heard more noise on this from others, we can't be the only two OCDs here !?

@Trevozneoma - To build on your observation with Samsung Pay, I went into settings and have unchecked the option for using it via screen off. The lock screen and home screen are still checked, and this seems to have fixed my issue. It's not perfect, as I like to use the feature when using Samsung Pay, however, I will take this, over the battery drain and annoying nature of the screen on on the incall UI screen!
Thanks for your help!
@ProFragger we probably notice it because we use our phones...as phones haha. I will give the Samsung Pay work around a try. Thanks for the recommendation!

Hi Guys!
I too have this issue and I have a Samsung S7 Edge on Sprint.
As it was stated, this all started after the last update.
As I primarily use a BT headset with my calls, I have simply been hitting the Home Button and the phone will stay in the time out mode.
Just jumping on this band wagon in hopes that this issue will be resolved quickly!!
Thanks!!

The work around works, but it is just a PITA to have to keep hitting the home screen to put the call screen out of focus.
I really hope that Samsung will address this issue and fix it!!
Happens here also. Thanks for the workaround.

I hate this so much. It happens while I am on the phone and it happens when an appointment reminder pops up and then the screen goes black and then turns on, over and over. THIS ONLY STARTED HAPPENING AFTER I UPDATED FROM Marshmallow to Nougat.
Here is the FIX... Guessing anyone that has the issue has Samsung Pay with a card provisioned. Was reading through some other forums and found that this was the root cause. Everyone was deleting their cards to get the screen to work as expected. However, if you go into Samsung Pay --> Settings --> Use Favorite Cards, you can just disable the Screen Off option and all will be well once more. You will still be able to use your cards but will just have to turn on the phone first.
edit: Well [email protected] Worked great last night during testing and now back to turning the screen on again this morning. Going to try disabling all the options under Use Favorite Cards. If that doesn't work, will delete all my cards and try again.
Ant word on whether that worked?
Same issue for me as well (Verizon Galaxy S7 edge, 7.01). When I am on calls (usually have a headset plugged into the phone) the screen cycles on and off repeatedly. Seems to have started when I went to 7.0. So glad others are reporting the same thing as it is very annoying and hopefully something Samsung will fix in the next update. I will try the Samsung Pay fix and report back.
Same issue here, Galaxy S7 Edge on ATT. Noticed after Nougat update. It seems to be problematic across any dialer as I did try and had the same results using the hangout dialer. It does seem to be related to the Samsung Pay application. You can force stop Samsung Pay in applications and everything seems to work correctly. I have tried removing permissions from Samsung Pay and have had no luck. Will try and report to Samsung and Google directly also. Thank ya'll for sharing your info. hopefully they will have a fix soon.
I'm having the same issue on my S8. I thought i was somehow pressing my face against the screen and accidentally activating the "home button." Then I starting blaming one of my friends because it seemed like it only happened when I talked to people with iphones lol. I don't have or use Samsung Pay, so that can't be what's causing this problem. All I know is it's absolutely frustrating and making talking on the phone a complete headache. Hopefully they'll fix this soon.
Thank you all, I have the s8 and it has done this since I got it.
I don't have Samsung Pay installed at all, I use my Bank's pay app so disabled it. It can't be that but have no idea what it is. Driving me nuts, I keen putting people on hold, hanging up on them or at the least have the annoying vibration going off from pushing buttons. Hate hate hate it...
