No multitasking? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I realize, this maybe a newbie question, but I'll ask any way: Is there no real multitasking on the HTC Universal? No matter which ROM I tried so far, I e.g. couldn't run AIM and Opera simultaneously. The program not frontmost would just close. Same for IE and AIM or IE and Opera.
Or is that some custom registry tweak to save memory?

Are you trying 6.5 roms with around 8MBs of free ram? Try 6.1 ones with at least 25 MBs.

Actually I'm running a 6.1-rom. Just ~ 24 MB Program memory free, but I suppose that should still be too much to explain the automatical close of programs, when not frontmost.
I even tried a WM 5.0-rom. Same result. Weird.

perhaps its the xbutton settings? or do you even have it installed. I can mutlitask just fine in my WM5 rom. but then again wm5s better so =(

Got it working with an official German wm5-ROM by Qtek (UNI_QTEK_13096_185_10900_GER_Ship.exe).
Strange it didn't work with other ROMs.

MDA is very sluggish at times

Hey all,
I'm new to WM5 (or WM for that matters) and picked up my MDA from Tmobile a few days ago. I noticed windows becomes very sluggish at times (takes a long time for a key response). It's so slow sometimes it looks like it has hung in between program changes
I'm just running the basic programs that came with the phone and not using SD card at all.
Is this because I'm running low on Program memory? I noticed my program is at around 5 MB when this happens.
Should this even be happening w/ the basic apps? It seems to help when I start stop some of the running programs.
I hope I don't have OC the damn thing to run basic apps.
ROM version: 1.8.10.2 WWE (any better out there?)
ROM date: 12/10/05
I have an 8125 and it can get slow when running a few large programs of things. Like PIE or Opera & Media Player or Core. I will also tell you that its not an extremely fast device but it is in part due to the fact that programs are not writen to utilize the processor the Wizard has. That's what I have come to understand atleast. If anyone else has input on it please share.

I was hoping Opera would be less "fat" but from you have indicated that might not be the case. I wonder if Verizon's XV6700 make a difference in speed since their version is 400mhz.
I figure they're pretty much the same device and decided to go w/ TMobile since it's GSM.
Back to the slow issue, I notice the apps don't really close even if you close them. I have go to System to manually stop them to get the RAM back. Is that normal?
It is also slow because of memory design. There are more topics on this. You can't lose data when battery is empty, but type of memory used is slower.
Well thats a trade I am willing to make. I was always checking my battery on my SX66. Now atleast I can relax and jsut use the device. The 6700 from verizon should run these apps faster because it has a normal but higher speed procesor. It is 400 mhz but not dual core. Where as the Wizard is 200 (195) mhz Dual Core. I think that if apps were writen to utilize this they would run much better, as fast as the 400mhz.

Do you have Skype installed?
My xda mini S became extremely slow a month ago or so. It was pretty much unusable. Once I uninstalled Skype there was a massive speed increase.

That doesn't make sense, unless you were constantly running skype. Just having skype installed doesn't slow down the device. I have it installed, and there are no resources being used if I don't launch it.
Optical,
Have you applied the various reg hacks (WM5 Cache, and Glyphecache) yet? They do make a difference.
Skype has a minimum processor speed requirement, quite clearly stated on their website, which the XDA Mini unfortunately does not meet. Again, unfortunately that is the only version you can use for it since earlier Skype builds will not run at all under WM5. One trick is to run Skype from the MiniSD card which has the advantage of freeing up precious RAM, in fact I would recommend you only install any new applications onto the MiniSD card.
Skype
In my case I found a noticeable improvement once I uninstalled Skype. It wasn't running constantly. I regularly checked the Task Manager closing all unnecessary apps as it was so slow.
Might just be me though!

When you close programs in Windows Mobile they are not realy stopped!!
Thats why your memory is around 5 mb after a while.
If you want to stop programs at once, you need some special programs like SPB Pocket Plus.
May be this will help your memory loss and slow ppc.

Very true.
Another good one that I like using is Battery Pack Pro. The nice little "X" is in the corner of the screen and it lets you "click" the program close like windows normally would. It also lets you click on the "X" to see any running apps and force close them.
I'm just waiting for my miniSD card before I go with the tweaks. I'm just a little surprised at what I have to do to just run the apps the OS came with. I guess I had a higher expectation for this device as for performance. You would think 64MB on a phone device is enough!
I noticed one of the tweaks is references the GPS. What is that about? Is that referring to GPS as in GPS receiver? =)
I got a BT receiver and planning to use it but I would love to be surprised about the GPS feature.

WM Browsers for the Shift???

What is the best browser for SnapView/WM on the Shift. Explorer is ok but there are a lot better mobile browsers out there. Has anyone been able to try the new Skyfire browser on the Shift? I have it on my treo 750 and love it. Just looking for something better than explorer. Any links or cab files would be appreciated.
I use Opera.
Wait for Skyfire... I think it is going to blow them all away from what I have seen since it went beta.
opera mini 4.1 beta....
opera mobile 9.5 is best even though it's beta
I have heard great things about opera mini 4 but I have not tried it yet. I have tried older versions of opera and the one that came with the HTC Advantage but have not been overly impressed with those. Except for the opera on the X7501 I have only tried these on my Treo (Opera and Skyfire)
remove Opera 9.5
Hi,
I have installed Opera 9.5 and it needs lots of space and crashes because it needs too much while working.
Now it seems to have installed files all over the place. Probably it will not delete all the files when I remove it.
Is there any method to find all the files it has installed to delete them manually?
It needs much too much space.
Space: In the windows folder there is a bis file called "provision.zip". Can I delete it? Or is it needed?
Are there any other big files which can be deleted?
How big is Skyfire, can it be used in Europe (Germany)?
Thanks!

Hi Danielherrero,
The Shift doesn't come with a Java Midlet manager. Which Midlet manager did you install and where did you get it from please?
Thanks!
opera 9.5 will be best for vga. the newer versions not available to the public are really good on the vga devices.

Its nice but It needs much memory to run. After surfing some webs the memory decreases to 2 MB and then Opera is closed
and INstalled over Real VGA makes the icons extra extra extra big. I will wait for a more stable version....

Hi,
same experience as Daniel. Crash after some surfing. Files all over the place, and in the registry the ghosts of the deinstalled programme. A mess! Needs about 8 MB memory.

Unfortunately the Mogul has very low program memory. With no programs running after a soft reset I have only 18.23 mb available (that sucks). I too have tried Opera with the same success you're having...lol. I now use Skyfire beta, best browser for the Mogul!
is your phone running the stock rom? I would recommend flashing a custom rom.. maybe the new bleedingedge 2.2 rom? Boots up with about 24-26 megs free...

M2D 3d Driver ROMs RAM Usage?

Hey Folks,
first of all, I like those new ROMs with Manila2D very much. Interface looks nice and is really good to use.
The thing that makes me think about going back to non-Manila ROM is the excessive RAM usage ... with Syrius R1 e.g. I got max. 35mb of free RAM directly after Installation. Compared to a udK Diamond R8 which I used for quiet a while ... running SPB Mobile Shell 2.1.2 + Cube and several other installed apps, gave me 45mb+ free RAM.
What's your RAM usage like with Manila2D? I don't know if it's in any way worth sacrificing 10MB+ of RAM just for the nice looks .... though anyway Mobile Shell looks very nice too, and has like thousands of Skins and mods available.
boba
Well thats the trade off you get. Manila 2d isnt THAT RAM intensive. So its up to you wether you use it or not.
I think Manila is GREAT and im more than happy to sacrifice ram. Nothing else compares to Manila.
If you want just a skin and cut down on Ram usage a little bit, try loading on Vito's Winterface or iFonz.
Other than that, just dont use Manila.
No answer to your question, just a other question of me.
Do you need the extra free program memory?
I never have a shortage in memory. I never checked the amout of free memory until I saw your post. I have 23 MB free program memory with a lot of programs active. I noticed there is only a total of 84 MB of program memory. I thought it should be 128 MB? As stated before, I never have any issues with a lack of memory.
Different ROMs have different amounts of free RAM available. There is a certain amount that can be reserved for other things, such as pagepool I believe, that take away from the total program memory available. This even happened in the wm6.1 official ROM, max memory available dropped.

If you want max free memory out of the ROM, like me try Bepe 0.67 rom. I disable the Biotouch.exe (a simple trick by renaming activesynkiller.exe to Biotouch.exe) And install Manila2D on my own -> use the beta 18 version.
And on fresh restart, I get 69MB free memory. After hours of usage, I still get 60MB free memory.
No answer but another question
IGO 6 & 8 not working while Manila is active, must disable the Manila and reset to launch IGO
if I minimize IGO and start Manila and return back to IGO it working with no problem
is it another memory problem or what ???

help me chose wm 6.1 or wm 6.5

Hello. I need a wm 6.1 or 6.5 to put on my trinity. (p3600) I want to install igo8 and mio v3.3 on it. Can you tell me witch wm i can use? I need space and at least 30mb free ram for installing igo8, mio and any other software. I tried all kins of rom but igo 8.3.2 is not installnig anymore. please help.
WM 6.1, I dont belive that the Trinity has enough RAM to run WM6.5
I use this ROM on my trinity without any issues
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=494727
i'm currently using wm6.5 (i believe TRIN_WM6.5__3_00_707_51__B21232) and it seems pretty stable so far. The only real issue i've had is with the status icon in the top right of screen that shows programs running and mem usage, it's disappeared and the only way i got it back was doing a hard reset, but then it went again. Apart from that all good so far.
I'm using the rom as supplied and have installed no extras apart from TomTom7, which works fine.
I do get a bit of slow down occasionally but it doesn't seem any worse than 6.1 and killing off apps using task manager generally sorts it out.
Hope this helps
Smiffy
I used wm6.5 kitchen in my P3600 , It's work well , finger friendly and beauty menu , but soma time it's hang and some program such garmin not run it and need long time for started. I turn to wm5 orginal , but want to test wm6.1 !
Can U help me to chose light version of Rom wm6.5 or wm6.1 ?
Check my siganture for a decent Ultralite 6.1 ROM. From a fresh install you have the following:
WWE_21014_UltraLite
Storage 74.43Mb
RAM 51.07Mb
Free Storage 71.88Mb
Free RAM 30.95Mb

Hi deedee,
Thank you, that was good advice, I had to fix a friend's Trinthy P3600, I took your advice and 21014.1.6.0 ROMs first I tried the full version but then switched to the Medium and it was awesome. From a fresh boot it gave me more then 29MB of RAM, Then I loaded a ton off apps like iGO8, SPB mobile Shell with SPB weather and SPB TV, Mobi Pocket Reader, AE Buttons, StopTime, scientific Calculator and RDP (and I thin I am missing a couple of them) but it is working great.
Very Good Stable and Fast ROM, since it was this post of yours that guided me to that ROM so I owe you tons of Gratitude. And I also owe chanv93 lots of thansk for making such wonderful ROM and putting it out there for dumb noobs like me who are not smart enough to cook their own ROMs.
Good Work chanvi93 and many many Thanks
