why cant you update ? i have no idea how to pull the prl from the phone sorry
Right? How do pull the PRL.....anyone?
menu/settings/system updates/prl
Updating your PRL is not going to mess up your root at all. The only thing it could affect, is switching back to selecting sprint towers instead of altell towers, if you were using that altell hack.
I am new to Sprint and only been on Android for a few months now, but what is PRL and profile under system updates?

PRL stands for Preferred Roaming List. Basically it tells the phone which towers to connect to while roaming.
Profile has been explained to me as like a soft data reset to your account, sort of like resetting your router.
Anyone else care to add anything?

Damn, I was hoping this would somehow fix my service. I lost 3G service around here a few days ago when a strong thunderstorm came through, I guess a tower is just down. It's weird, 2.1 roms still say 3G (with my bars showing the roaming triangle) while 2.2 roms show 1X instead of EvDo (while showing EvDo while I'm not at home). On either rom, my speeds are **** while I'm at home.
Looks like mostly changes in Mexico..

Has anyone else had an issue where after the PRL is updated, the screen turns black, all that works is the home button, and if you open any menu or setting, a black screen pops up saying that your PRL has been updated, and when you hit OK, you just go back to the black screen?
The only solution I've found is rebooting the phone.

Nope. Just did an update with no problems.
Should you this if you are running Damage control rom or will it affect root/rom?

no it will not effect root or anything like that. I think all it can do is effect how your phone connects to the towers.
Thanks updated and rebooted so far looks good it is funny becuase i am going to mexico next week

For some reason my 3g keeps disconnecting. In settings the mobile network option is greyed out, stuck on "turning on". The only thing that fixes it is a reboot.

No one has any idea why this happens?
Is your phone stock?
it seems to just show that when the phone is idle, not updating, sending/receiving, etc. i have no way to prove this, just a theory.

I had that problem when I was running adrylalyne's Vanilla FrankenROM. It's the sole reason why I had to quit running it. It was a seriously annoying once-in-a-while thing at first but once I'd been running it for about 24 hours, it seemed to happen ALL THE TIME and got to the point where sometimes even a reboot wouldn't fix it. I haven't had it on any other ROM, though.
I was running the leaked radio (2.05?) when I had that ROM. Now that I've got 2.15, I've been thinking about giving it another shot.

No, the connection completely goes away. It's not just "I can't see the 3G symbol"... The phone actually has NO data connection and it seems impossible to get it to come back without a reboot.
2.15 radio fixed that for me. Using first leak Rom still.

in order to get rid of this, you'd need to find which file or which portion of that file controls the signal indicator on the phone, and replace it with an older version of that file, from before this "idle" indicator began.
maybe the google holds the answers you seek?

Good to know. I think I will try that FrankenROM again, then.
i'm unrooted and on stock OS, just got my incredible yesterday...so far i've noticed that it seems to just stay dormant, whenever i open an app that connects to the network, it automatically lights up the indicator and starts using the data, and it doesn't seem to prevent me from actually sending or receiving data, so i don't know how i would tell if it's actually no connection or just an "idle" indicator. how did you come to that conclusion?

What you see is normal. The 3G (or 1X) indicator only lights when the data connection is being used. The problem here is that there was no data connection. I would attempt to do anything that used the data connection and it would not connect. No email, no internet, no Nav, no nothing. The programs would all open, but could not download anything.
Agreed, that's sort of what I was implying, I was referring to the OP. so the connection issues are Rom based, not related with the gray indicators. Just because its gray doesn't mean you don't have connection. Clarifying for the next person who stumbles across this thread.

To the OP, this happened to me today using Sky Raider Sense 2.5.2. I also had to restart, so it's not only you that has the problem.

What he was talking about being greyed out is when you go into Menu> Settings> Wireless & Networks, the place where you check to turn Mobile networks on and off is greyed out with the text of "Turning on..." below.

Same thing happened to me over the weekend. I was in a tiny town in Texas that apparently had no 3g and I was unable to do anything that used the data connection. Reboot didn't work, neither did changing the Mobile Directory Number to all zeros when pressing ##program>NAM-General (as was suggested on a different forum which I cannot link to). What sucks is that it's highly unlikely I can duplicate this problem since there is probably good 3g coverage around the verizon store in the city where I live. I called verizon and the person said something about that area not having access to the data network, which I don't believe because when I was screwing with the settings under ##program I managed to get a text message. My wife's Samsung Vibrant (I know, different network) had no 3g but she was still able to access all apps that required the data network.
When my wife's Incredible was stock, this happened to her. It wouldn't connect to 3G. When going into settings and checking it out, "Mobile Network" was all grayed out. After LONG discussions with Verizon Tech Dept, 2 factory resets later, they found the problem to be on their end with the phone being "lost" on their system. They reset something (didn't tell me what) and bingo! her phone had 3G again.
I just had it happen to me. Reboot fixed it, but I'd like to know why its happening so I can tell my friends at VZW to look into it...
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Still happening to me. I told the tech that a bunch of people in the forums were saying it was a problem on their end, something about my phone needing to be removed from and then added back to the data plan, and they told me that they'd look into it. Eventually the 3g came back on its own like it always has when I have this problem, and the next day I got a text from verizon saying the issue had been fixed (which I doubt consisted of anything more than someone having the system send me a text saying the issue had been fixed). I've had this problem when my phone was stock, when I updated to the 2.05 baseband, and now that I've rooted and installed skyraider. Not exactly the experience I anticipated when I left the iphone 3g...
noticed another thing, idk if related...my gmail will "quit" working...meaning, it shows i have new emails inside the app, but they haven't pulled to my phone yet. the refresh button in the app, and the sync now button under accounts don't work, i had to do a nand wipe and restore a file from a day ago. i think it's app related, because it always seemed to happen after i updated some apps in the market, but one of the times (this last time) i didn't update the apps, i deleted them and it still happened. all other data and network connections work fine, only gmail. prolly not related, but thought i'd throw it out there
This is an issue that a lot of Hero users had. I was fortunate enough to not experience it with the Hero, but my current time without signal is 52% on my Epic. If I remember correctly, it was a PRL problem, but it might also be the radio. It would be the cause of serious battery issues. I've attempted updating my profile and PRL to no avail. Is anyone else having time without signal issues?
To check, go to settings -> about phone -> battery use -> cell standby.

I thought it was just a reporting issue

No. I remember what it was now. It was that the Hero wasn't set to use CDMA towers and was searching for GSM towers for some reason. Something to do with the fact that the Hero was originally a GSM phone, which would make sense here. Someone in the thread that was created just a bit ago suggested it had something to do with the PRL update, which is possible, because I did it and that's when I started getting bad battery life and a high percentage of time without signal.
I've been having a hell of a time with my data connection today, which would explain my poor battery.
I've got a very high time w/out signal as well... I'm surprised this hasnt gotten more attention. Its a huge battery drain.
...
I've got 50% time without signal on mine. It seems likely that the searching for GSM towers could be happening on this phone as well because of all the material that crossed over from the international versions. Is there a way to check and/or fix this problem and get the phone to only search for the CDMA towers?
Thanks,
-Rob
I've been trying to set the network mode to cdma auto using the network app i downloaded from the market. I dont think its fixing the issue though...
Strangely enough this is a similar issue I have seen with the Samsung Intercept. Especially having a hard time with keeping the data connection...

Haven't have this issue and I live in Puerto Rico. We have 5 carriers on this tiny island and Sprint is the only one with CDMA.
I think I figured it out. I set my network to cdma auto and my time without signal dropped to 3%. Battery drain seems improved in the short term...
Did you set yours up to WCDMA only? If I went WCDMA Preferred, I can see it was trying and failing to connect to GSM.

Go to the android market and search for an app called "Network"
Open up the app, you should see WCDMA Preferred in a drop down box near the bottom of the screen. Select that and change it to CDMA auto.
Exit the app.
Your Time without service should drop really low (mine went to 3%)
I've had the app behave strangely and revert my settings. I'm paranoid so i've been checking it pretty often. I'm not sure if there is a way to make this change permanent. I dont know if it reverts when the phone is rebooted.
The way that the problem was solved on the Hero was by accessing a system menu through a ##CODE## code and telling it to prefer CDMA towers. It was defaulted, for some, to GSM. Because I never had this issue, I don't know a whole lot about it. I know that ##CODE## codes are not available on this phone, though, so we might be out of luck until we can get into some kind of dev menu, I think. The app fix mentioned above sounds janky as hell to me, though, so I'll avoid it for now.
My phone has a hell of a time holding on to a data connection right now, but Juice Defender is really helping that not absolutely kill my battery. Aside from this one concern, my battery is actually lasting a surprisingly long time. I was expecting it to die nearly twice as fast as my Hero, but it is definitely giving it a run for its money. I'm very pleased with the Epic
...
I followed your directions. Got into Network, changed the dropdown box to CDMA Auto (PRL) and then hit the home button. Nothing changed, so I went back into the app to check if it stuck and it was back at WCDMA Preferred. Am I missing a step to make the change stick or something?
Thanks,
-Rob

Yea, Thats what mine looked like until I fixed it with the Network app.
Yes, I have been playing lots of games/angry birds
I have been trying to use the Network app that people are suggesting but I am getting some weird issues. When I open the Network app it says I am on "WCDMA preferred" but then if I just let it sit for about 15-30 seconds it changes to "Unknown" without my pressing anything. I tried setting it to "CDMA only" and to "WCDMA only" but it doesn't save either setting. If I exit and reopen the program it goes back to "WCDMA preferred" and then changes itself to "Unknown" after a short duration. Anyone else have a problem like this? Any ideas?
I keep getting an error that pops up on my phone occasionally : Error code 107 - data call failure.
Anyone know anything about this or how to fix it? My Mom gets it on her shift too. It's annoying, but doesn't seem to affect anything on the phone.

I got it a lot on my hero, and when I first got my Shift. I called and complained, told them I'd already been through factory resets, ## dialer codes, everything.
Eventually after a couple girls finished reading an apparent universal HTC tech support guide to me they passed me along to a nice fellow. He said he'd seen that problem a lot, changed my user name, I reset my data profile again and VOILA! Over a month, no data call failure!

Updating the profile didn't fix it. I updated it Tuesday afternoon with no errors popping up, and still got the error code 107 this morning.
I think Wardfan220 is at least partially correct. More often than not, it happens at home, where I'm roaming about 90% of the time. It happens at work occasionally though, but that's on a repeater, so I could see that being the cause. I never got the error on my Hero though, that's why I was thinking it was an issue with just this phone.

Yeah, I never got it on my Hero also, but it seems to be, for me at least, when switching from roaming back to Sprint's network and vise versa, I was also getting a 107 erroe with my data at one point, but that was jsut a billing issue (wife didn't pay, lol).
Lately I have noticed my N1 has been dropping a lot of calls everyday. When this happens, my 3G icon disappears and comes back about 30 seconds later. It's as if it loses connection to the network and comes back.
I can't for the life of me remember if this started happening before I upgraded to 2.3.3 (OTA) or after. I believe it's been going on before that but I can't be sure. I kept blaming my friends that it was their phones dropping calls but after paying closer attention, it appears to be my phone instead.
I am with Rogers, not rooted (stock) running 2.3.3.
Any ideas what might be causing this?
First option would be a factory reset. Then revert to an old build and see if the problem occurs there too. Then upgrade accordingly and see if it's fixed.
Thanks for the reply. Where can I get a 2.2 stock image?
I have tried several ROMs and the same problem occurs too. So I think it's TMobile's network problem.

Just in case, check if your carrier's APN are configured correctly.
Ok so i have done a factory reset late last night. In the next day or two while using my phone, I should probably find out if the reset did the trick.
Just to reiterate, I am with Rogers (in Canada) running 2.3.3. My APN settings are correct as well.
Also, I did already notice something odd. When you go to Mobile Network Settings, and then choose Access Point Names, I see my Rogers APNs (one for the network and one for tethering). I then click on the Rogers network APN where I see all my APN settings. So far so good. Then, I don't touch anything, and the weird part is as soon as I hit the back button taking me back to the APNs screen, my 3G icon disappears for a few seconds, comes back this time white in colour (as well as the signal meter), and a few more seconds later both the 3G icon and singal meter turn green again. Is this normal? Is this perhaps a bug in 2.3.3 that might be contributing to my problem?
I was hoping if anyone out there can test and see if their n1 does the same thing. Thanks.
I had downloaded 1 of Mik's roms a while back (version 2.0.1 to be exact) and saw this 3.0 as his latest work on his website so figured I would give it a try. I see that he is aware that there are still remnants of this ROM that was made for Sprint EVO devices apparently, but I'm having a unique issue.
Whenever I attempt to make a call it alerts me that I am in roaming mode (which I double checked and i have it checked OFF so my DINC will dont roam) and if I would like to continue anyway. When my lock screen comes up it says "Verizon Network" on top and I am receiving and able to send text messages just fine. I have not seen anyone else having this issue in the forums and the last thing I want is to receive a higher bill from Verizon at the end of the month because of a new ROM. Also, the alert is simply annoying.
Please help.

Sounds like you need to update your prl. You do this by dialing *228 and selecting option 2.
I forgot to mention that that's the first thing I did. I even accepted the alert and went with it anyway knowing it wouldn't take but a minute. It programmed the phone successfully.
Still occuring obviously.

Hmm not sure then. I know sprint ported roms tend to be touchy on the verizon network. I gave up on using them after synergy rom awile back, because my data connection would constantly break, requiring a compleete ruu and factory reset to get it working again. Just flashing a new rom wouldnt fix it.
Have you tried flashing the .0808 evo radio. I know it works on the incredible and mabey since its a sprint ported rom the evo radio would work better, or mabey not just a sugestion.

I actually had to turn ON data roaming to check off Data Roam Guard. It didn't work. But out of desperation I checked OFF Call Guard and that fixed it. Maybe that's the option that you meant. Either way, the alert has stopped and my outgoing calls no longer give me that message while I have roaming OFF.

Doing this on sprint ROMs have a tendency to break data. I don't recommend doing this. Also other development don't recommend it either. If you start having data issues, you may need to go back to stock, redo *228, the reflash what you want. I'm currently running my port of MikG 3.0 and have not had the warning. I did what you have done and its fine. I've made sure that the NETWORK thinks we are in fact Verizon, but the ROM somehow thinks we are Sprint.
