So Frustrated with Rooting my incredible - Droid Incredible General

Ive had my Incredible for 7 days, and have been trying to root it since.
I got this one from Best Buy, and have another on the way from Verizon due tomorrow (which i will just refuse shipment since I got lucky finding this one at Best Buy)
I have had no luck in getting root. I have tried every technique that a google search would bring up, short of getting the Kingston Class 4 4gb card.
I have tried a PNY 2 gb card, Lexar 2GB, Sandisk 2gb, Da?? something or another 8gb class 4 card.
I have turned debugging on and off. I have pulled batteries, reseated the sd card at all times of the whole process (ive done this at least 200+ times.
Once the phone is booted up for use, I get the $ prompt from adb shell, but thats the only time (with debugging on of course).
The loop just NEVER lets me in. Ive tried winxp, win7 x86 and x64, and desktops to laptops. You name it.
So, since I've already put alot of wear and tear on this phone from trying to root it, should I just accept the phone from verizon tomorrow (and maybe it will be able to root? Who knows), then just take back my phone to best buy and say it keeps rebooting or something.
Or should I stay with what i got and wait for a new root to come up thats alot easier (and avoid the hassle of taking stuff back, dealing with the mail in rebate from verizon, etc).
Any advice would be appreciated.
gv

There is supposed to be another root method out within the week, for what that's worth. I don't really have any advice on which direction you should go, and sorry that rooting isn't working for you. Took me about 30 tries.

Sandisks seem to work best with the click in and out during recovery boot method. I own two 2gb sandisks (actually one I "borrowed" from my Bro) a 16gb sandisk, and a kingston 2gb all class 2. I've gotten all the sandisks working with root about 1/10 with click in and out. Still can't get the Kingston working but I'm stubborn and I HAVE to get all my cards working with root Haha. Also I was ONLY able to get these working in mac or Linux. Win was a no go for me. In short, (lol) use your sandisk, click in and out while booting recovery, while running a adb loop in mac, Linux, or a live cd and see how it goes. Be patient and Good Luck!

lol 7 days. I wish I rooted 7 days after I had my phone or even after the root was discovered. I think I spent 7 hrs a day since root was found. root will elude u. bring a pillow and some mtn dew and get comfy its gonna be a long road for you

Actually, was told by the devs in another threads that it will be 'days' before the new root is coming out. So if thats what you meants by a 'long road', i'll take it

I've now rooted 5 Dinc's using the same SDCard using the very original method (even before the loop script). The sdcard I use is a Patriot 8gb which is apparently very slow which makes the process work almost everytime.
My own Dinc was rooted using a SanDisk 16GB Class 4 but that appears to have been a fluke as most have had trouble with SanDisk.
With the others, I just use the same Patriot sdcard, and when I get to the point where you do the update.zip the first time to mount the card, I switch to whatever card that phone will be using and continue from there so the Patriot card is only used to get to the rootable point.
I carry that sdcard in a sdcard container and keep it with me in my Netbook case.

Can you clarify at what point you remove your SD card and reinstall the other persons?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

I start out with the patriot card in the phone.
When you get to the point where the exec /system/bin/sh failed.... your next step would be to Press the volume-up and Power at the same time.
I switch the sdcard before that step and then follow the instructions from that point on.

I had problems rooting at first too... and I hope this helps you some...
My biggest problem was the drivers, and getting them loaded properly. After I switched to Windows 7 and the Unrevoked drivers (rather than modding the SDK drivers), I used a combo of methods to get rooted in under 10 minutes.
For what its worth, I'm using the 16 gig Sandisk class 2 that came in my Moto Droid.
I used a combination of the following instructions...
Finally got Root with 2gig card that came with phone - xda-developers
public:adb_in_recovery [RootWiki]
and instead of modifying the USB drivers that the SDK downloads, I used the drivers from -> public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki]
I couldn't get the drivers loaded in XP sp2, so I switched to Win 7 and it was fine.
to sum it up..
1. Download SDK (android-sdk_r06-windows.zip) from Android SDK | Android Developers
2. unzip the SDK to the root of drive C
3. download the "unrEVOked modified USB driver" from public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki]
4. unzip the "unrEVOked modified USB driver" to the C drive
5. make sure USB Debugging is enabled on the INC. (settings->applications->development->check the box for USB Debugging)
6. Power the phone on, connect via USB cable to PC, and select "charge only"
7. load the drivers. For the ADB driver, Windows add new hardware wizard should prompt you about not having a correct driver, point it to the unzipped "unrEVOked modified USB driver"
8. create a loop.cmd or loop.bat in the SDK\Tools folder which just loops "ADB SHELL"
Code:
:top
adb shell
goto top
9. open command prompt, navigate to your SDK\Tools folder and type in: adb devices. when you hit enter it should list your phone as being connected.
10. at the prompt type: adb reboot recovery and press enter
11. as soon as the prompt is back type: loop and hit enter to start the adb shell loop. As soon as the loop starts running, the phone should show the white HTC Incredible screen, start clicking in and out the sd card before you hear the device disconnected sound on your pc. keep clicking the card in and out until you hear device connected sound on you pc. Look for "failed: No such file or directory" message on PC, if you see it, you're in Recovery Mode and ready to go onto the next step. If you don't see "failed: No such file or directory (2) for after another 10, 15 seconds stop clicking the card. take the battery out of the phone, put it back in, wait for it to reboot and repeat this step.
12. Once in recovery mode, I finished up by using the instructions under the heading of "I just got ADB running in recovery mode! Now what?" on -> public:adb_in_recovery [RootWiki]
Credit go to the above links... I just took what I used from each and summarized them here..
I did not purchase a new card.
And again, I had problems loading the driver in XP, so I had to use Win7, and I imagine Vista would have worked too.
Sorry if this doesn't help any.

I can confirm after many many many( u get the point) hours of trying to root that the correct driver and the ten minute root video did the trick. Use the root wiki like the post above says and you will b golden.
Edit: I also used the 16 gig from my motor without problem. Its all about the drivers

Finally got Root with 2gig card that came with phone

I've posted this inside another thread but decided to make a new one so others can see.
To all of you guys who are giving up - DON'T !
Here's how I finally got root on my DINC after about 3 days of trying.
I've read and watched almost every post and walk-throughs available in this forum and few others and was still unable to get into ADB Shell using any of the methods and tricks available and even though none of them worked I kept trying until I found a post on adndroidforums.com by Centsy. So along with his instructions and combination of many others here's how I achieved root:
1. Download the file from the 10 minute incredible root video on YouTube by mejdam. (can't post the link cause I'm new to the forum).
2. Unzip the file and run SDK setup.
3. As soon as SDK setup runs it gives an error message. Close it. then hit Cancel on next window.
4. While still in Android SDK and AVD Manager click on Available Packages (on the left) and then hit the plus sign in the right window for the repository. It will give you a list of packages available. Download the very last one which is the USB_Driver. It will add 'usb_driver' folder to your SDK folder where you ran sdk setup from.
5. Modify android_winusb.inf file inside the 'usb_driver' folder by adding these lines at the end of [Google.NTx86] and [Google.NTamd64] sections:
;HTC Incredible
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C9E
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C9E&MI_01
%SingleBootLoaderInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C94
6. I used the 2 gig Sandisk memory card that came with the phone. Had it FAT32 full formatted on the pc.
7. insert the card into the phone wait for it to be recognized
8. connect the phone to the pc and use the modified inf file of Android SDK usb_driver to get the phone connected and drivers installed. Note that I do not have HTC Sync installed on my pc.
9. on the phone go to settings->applications->development->turn on USB Debugging. wait for the phone to be recognized
10. open command prompt, navigate to your SDK\Tools folder and type in: adb devices. when you hit enter it should list your phone as being connected.
11. at the prompt type: adb reboot recovery, hit enter
12. as soon as the prompt is back type: loop and hit enter to start the adb shell loop. As soon as the loop starts running, the phone should show the white HTC Incredible screen, start clicking in and out the sd card before you hear the device disconnected sound on your pc. keep clicking the card in and out until you hear device connected sound on you pc. If you still don't see THE message we are looking for after another 10, 15 seconds stop clicking the card. take the battery out of the phone, put it back in, wait for it to reboot and repeat steps 11 and 12.
I had to do steps 11 and 12 about 3 times when I said to myself - next time is the last time and if it doesn't work then I'm going to get the 2gig PNY card that everyone is saying helps them achieve root. Then all of the sudden it took a little longer for the device connected sound to come up and the mouse cursor turned to the Waiting Hour-Glass and as soon as I heard the sound I saw the good old error message we are all striving to see. After that I just followed the instructions on the 10 minute root video to get the phone rooted.
Never give up, Never surrender !
Hopefully this will help some of you guys to achieve root and thanks to everyone who's hard at work on getting this great phone rooted.
Hi,
Having issues with your Step #12. You say to click the card in and out when the white HTC screen comes up and do it till the first disconnect sound. Then you go on to say keep clicking untill it connects. Then you says 10-15 seconds after the connect sounds keep clicking. Don't you mean to say keep clicking from white HTC screen till 10-15 seconds after the 2nd sound(the connect sound) So basically clicking for over 30seconds.
Please clarify as I'm thinking you meant differently thne what you typed. I too have a stock 2G sandisk card that came with my phone and so want to get this rooted without buying a PNY card hah.

Basically once the white screen comes up, start clicking the card in and out until about 10, 15 seconds after the 2nd connect sound that windows give you. However, you MUST start pushing the card in and out before the 1st disconnect sound.
Okay cool. Fingers crossed I have been trying since yesterday and about to jump out the window hah.

Wow, I got it first time with this method! Thanks a lot! I am also using the stock 2gb card that came with the phone.
Thanks man. I got this to work twice in about 4 tries. 1st time it worked I accidently selected reboot option. So had to retry this method. My clicks were medium speed not very fast and not excessively slow in case that helps anyone. About 1 a second.

(2G Sandisk Rooter hehe)
Hey this method worked to get the error but I can not write to the SDCard, I get the following when I try to push something: failed to copy 'busybox' to 'sdcard/busybox: Permission Denied
It is the same with any file and I did Apply sdcard:update.zip
Please help!
I think this will help

Once you get error, I believe that you need to run the "apply update.zip" once and let it fail. Then you can adb to the sdcard.
PS, this method never worked for me, no matter how much I tried.

Same here, i still can't get to adb shell . . .
I got into adb doing the click on the 3d try but it kept failing to push the payload and then I accidentally restarted the phone. AHHHH, just spent 30 minutes doing the same thing and couldn't get back in.
Awesome, I got it to work using your method.
First I tried the "10 min..." video, but it was unclear in some areas. I had to try a few times (10+) to get it to work. Problem for me was the speed at which I was putting in and out the SD Card. I did it at some odd pattern like In (4 sec), out (.5 Sec), in (4 sec), etc. Then all of a sudden it worked.
Got it rooted .
Thanks again!
Finally got it. Thanks
Spent probably 6 hours messing with it. Not worth it anymore.

if your phone shows up then you may proceed further. Howerver if after quite a few tries you still can't root then you should try updating the driver with the modified inf file.
go to your device manager, you should see the very first item should be Android Phone. right click on the phone and choose update driver and point to the modified INF file.
if your pc tells you that it cannot find a better driver, just uninstall the phone from device manager (right click and choose uninstall), unplug the phone from the pc, wait about a minute and plug the phone back in - but use a different usb port just in case. Then when found new hardware manager comes up point it to the modified INF file.
Good luck.
Doesnt work for me. annoying
*edit* Finally got it 7 seconds awesome
I cannot get my inc to take the driver .inf file. I have edited it correctly, tried forcing the driver to it, and it keeps telling me that the driver is not valid for a 64-bit os. Tried doing it as a legacy device as well.
Win 7 ultimate 64-bit
dont see the plus sign
hit the plus sign in the right window for the repository well for some reason i dont see any plus sign in there to hit tell me what i might be doing wrong
Please Help If You Can
I am logged in; got the recovery; followed the instructions, and it didn't say unrevoked. so i did it again and
did a whole bunch of things
Finding update packge
opening update package
verifying update package
installing update
veridying curernt system
unpacking patches
removing unneeded files
patching system fioles
symlinks and permission s...
then I got
e:multiple firmware images
e: can't store zip image
installation aborted
Now I also cant get into ADB SHELL
when I type adb shell I get
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -
but no prompt
I will try to stay logged in and everything BUT PLEASE HELP. What do I do?
Thanks for these instructions, Op.
I was successful by exactly following your steps.
Edit to provide additional details -- I tried unsuccessfully upwards of 100 times following the instructions in the 10min video. A couple things that probably attributed to the success of this method for me:
1) Formatted 2GB card to FAT32 (4096) as recommended.
2) Uninstalled HTC Sync / HTC Driver Installer. I used the "SDK Setup" to download the USB drivers.
A tip if you're having trouble getting the USB drivers to download... I had to go to the "Settings" menu in the Android SDK and AVD Manager, and check the "Force https://... sources to be fetched using http://..." otherwise the Available Packages menu would fail to get the repository.xml.
I then applied the recommended changes to android_winusb.inf in C:\sdk\usb_driver\ and used this .inf as the Android Phone driver. It was possible to assign the driver after setting to "Debug" mode in the OS.
3) I started clicking the SD card as soon as the white screen would come up, instead of waiting for a few seconds after it appeared. I used a 2 seconds in, .5 seconds out, 2 seconds in, ... pattern.
4) After each failed attempt, instead of pulling the battery and holding volume- + pwr, I went with the ops method. This was to abort the "loop" tool on the PC, pull the battery, boot the phone normally to the OS, verify the phone was recognized by typing "adb devices" on the PC cmd prompt, commanding "adb reboot recovery" to reset the phone into recovery mode, starting "loop" as soon as the command prompt came back, and finally clicking the SD card as described above.

Device won't root. Cannot get the device "offline"

Hope this isn't a post that will really piss everyone off, but I'm not sure really where to go from here. Tried about 20 times. I run the loop command, it shows up for about 1 line and goes away.
I am still getting an Android 1.0 error of some sort. I've been reading about how to get this driver installed correctly. I uninstalled everything and started over (USBDeview, HTC Sync...The one for the Slide, SDK, Updated it with SDK Updater)
Windows 7 x64
Just went to Computer> right click> Manage> ABD Testing Interface....
I have a little yellow exclamation point next to this... Tried updating the driver. Not really sure though what driver I need or where it's at or the place I need to download it.
You ever feel like you've surfed cyberspace to the end of the megacluster? Yeah that's pretty much where I'm at frustrated, broken hearted, and wanting a one-click root procedure like the g1/mytouch.
Is it rude to wave money in developers faces for help? Does this make you feel like a stripper?
Ahhhh I'm just stuck.... Help would be so awesome.
I'm not a dev but I do feel like a stripper, but for unrelated reasons... Anyways. On my win7 64 I had to use pdanet and actually have the program running. For whatever reason when I tried closing pdanet it wouldn't work, so give that a shot. It also stopped the android 1.0 driver issues. I also gather from wes garners' twitter page he's working on a method of rooting that runs the adb scripts and **** for you. Maybe just wait it out.

Fermunky, I've been following your problem because I was having it too. What finally got it for me was, I formated a different sd card, put it in the phone, removed all software ( htc sync, pdanet) and removed all drivers I could find using usbdeview. Then rebooted with phone unplugged, installed pdanet following all their instructions, then the loop worked perfect. Good luck
Tl;dr version, i tried it all at the same time and it worked

That was on a win x64 system. Honestly I think it was the sd card, as weird as that sounds, because I tried all the usb stuff for about 4 hours to no avail, swapped out the sd card, rooted the first try.
I'll give all this a try. Do you use PDANet with or without HTC Sync? I was pretty tired last night when I tried and eventually gave up.
Hence all the stripper references.
I have an extra SD Card from my original Mytouch. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.

You should really have looked at the other thread on this already. Any driver will work, as long as you can get "adb devices" to show your phone when the phone is booted normally. Whats worked for many others, especially myself after 4 days of trying, was using a different, freshly formatted SD card. Good luck.
To no avail!
Just tried again. Tried without rebooting the computer the first time and "offline" would hang for a little longer than before. Still wouldn't stay. Should I have tried recovery a few more times? (I did try about three times.)
Uninstalled and reinstalled everything. Then tried "loop". "offline" doesn't even show up. Tried an old SD card too after I reformatted it. Does it matter the size of the SD card?
fermunky- I've been following your posts pretty regularly and I think I'm having the same problem. Yes I do have ADB devices showing up if the phone is on normally and running through the SDK. Had a problem for a while where it wouldn't recognize the device, but it does now.

Is there a way to catch it offline?
It is a hit or miss deal. Some times it works, some times it doesn't. I ran into the issue while rooting mine and just kept at it till I succeeded. One plus is that after you root you never have to worry about it not detecting the device properly.

Am I doing it right overall though.
1. Switch out SD card right before getting into recovery so there is absolutely nothing on the SD Card. (I've noticed if you let it boot it puts a LOS.DIR file or something of that sort.
fermunky had a similar problem and said once he installed everything a certain way he got it "offline" right away.
Is there a step-by-step I should be trying? Maybe another post I haven't read yet?
I'll keep trying, but it's kind of seeming like a lost cause. I've only been trying 2 days (Ha ha) After I surpass 4 days or so I'll give up and wait for Wes for the hook up.

Ultimate fix for device detection!!!
Uninstall EVERY driver (USBdeview) for anything android, i mean everything.
Installl HTC SYNC for espresso(any other software, PDAnet, Android Explorer.... needs to go). Dont let any drivers install while the phone is on!
Power off the phone and then plug your usb into it (phone needs to be usb debugg on and in sync mode).
Boot phone into the bootloader and the only driver it will install is the ADB driver which , without loop or multiple recovery boots or anything the phone will be detected.
I tried EVERY method in these forums and this worked perfect , went straight to pushing files, and only took 20 minutes to get it all the way to slidemeroot2. works great and everytime i need clockwork i can push the update without the problem of the device not being detected even after all the other drivers installed when i rebooted the phone. It seems that the other drivers were killing the adb function???? dunno, but i no longer have an undetected device, ever!
Also, i suggest if you want to get back into clockwork easily, plug in the phone while in normal operation mode and the adb reboot recovery that joker.
Hope this helps some, and thanks to all that have gotten us this far.
Thanks

Haven't tried this yet.
Do it in a few hours. I've been at this all day and need some food and beer! Beer always makes computer/smartphone problems disappear.
sorry to be "that guy" but there are already 5 threads about this issue also, there is a questions and answers thread that this should have been posted in instead.
Straight to "recovery" not "offline"!
Ok is this good or bad? It's not what the video nor website says, but it's different and different is good!
Just lists the HT........ recovery over and over??? Can I start everything from here?
Dude if this works I'll buy you a beer!
I'd be glad to move it.

If you have it in recovery, hit volume up and power. It should display the recovery menu. Try pushing the update file over.

Then it is an issue with your PC. Do what mtjnkee said and uninstall everything Android. Then use HTC Sync's drivers.

Preparing to do apps to sd

So I'm getting worked up to do the apps to sd, got SDK installed on my PC. I have ROM manager installed and was on the edge of partitioning the SD card. Not knowing what I would lose if I did the partition (it wipes and formats the SD), I took a spare 2GB and cleaned it out. Empty. I powered off the Aria and installed the clean 2GB chip, powered up, and played with a few apps for a few minutes. I see no negative effects, in fact I see better performance. Assumed, anyway, in that my task killer shows more RAM available after a kill. The ignore list didn't change, so that is obviously in the Aria.
After tooling around, I checked the SD card using estrongs file explorer. Really nothing got added to the SD card.
I have followed this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVU8vQVKo6I) tutorial on the SDK ADB driver install...no luck. Windows could not find the driver. When I type "adb devices" I get no devices listed. Also, when I connected the Aria, and manually pointed the search to the "usb_driver" folder, it came up empty. I am in charge only and debugging is selected. (And rooted using Liberated R003)
Since I will need to use ADB in step 5 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723483 I am stuck. At least I can pass the time by pulling out my hair wondering if the apps to sd is really worth it.
So I have messed with this a few times in the past two weeks and still no progress. I connect the Aria and no drivers found. I launch cmd and when I type ADB, I get android debug bridge 1.0.26. When I type ADB devices I get 'list of devices attached' but none are shown. I am in charge only and debugging is on. I type ADB shell and I get 'device not found.'
Apps to SD is a popular topic here, so can anyone help me figure out what I'm doing wrong or what I am missing? My internal storage is near max and need to do this.
Running liberated R010.

Install HTC Sync. It includes USB drivers in the install. After it's installed just make sure it's not running. Then go through all the steps of connecting the phone and doing the "adb devices" command.
Will this HTC sync force any updates that would make changes to my ROM or root status?
No, it won't. Just make sure it's not running anyway (you could even uninstall it if afterwards if you want.) You're simply installing it for the USB drivers that are piggy-backed on the install.
I tried at least 3 installs of this HTC Sync and I am getting failures. HTC BMP USB Drivers install failure. I continued installation anyway. Hope that isn't what I needed.
Edit: launched Sync, selected Sync on the device. Aria says umable to find HTC sync on the PC. (But I got the desktop shortcut and Sync launched, which says "No device connected.") I deselected debugging and reconnected, prompted me to find drivers, which weren't found.
Progress! At least in that I had a successful HTC sync install on my 32 bit Vista notebook....more update later.

Phone is showing as CD Drive on PC

So today I had to visit the local VZW store to get my SD Card replaced because it was corrupted somehow, and now whenever I mount the sd card on my pc it shows up as a CD Drive and I am unable to access it. I've tried mounting it on another pc and it works perfectly fine though which leads me to believe its something to do with my pc. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the usb drivers 3 times now and getting no where fast, anyone have an idea on what I can do?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
BTW, running DJ05 w/ Geeknik 1.5.4 kernel with Super clean, but I dont think it has anything to do with it as even stock out of the box it wont detect it.

LOL!
Try using Windows System Restore to revert back to SEVERAL days before a known-good date. Otherwise you may need to reformat and move this to a Windows Support Forum. If you need professional assistance, i run a tech support company and could have someone walk you through the whole process via phone and internet for $50.

No access to SD card
I'm having a similar problem with mine as well. I installed DJ05 and ever since I haven't been able to access my card. I'm not an expert but I don't think it's windows. The reason I say that is because I have tried it on two different pc's, one with XP and the other with Win 7. I have no problem connecting my wife's Droid to either machine. The only way I have been able to access my card is by turning on usb debugging plug in the usb cable and reboot the phone. This works one time, so each time I want to access the card I have to repeat the steps. I know this may not be exactly what you are looking for but maybe it will help in your efforts to find a solution. If anyone can help I would appreciate it as well. Thanks
I am willing to bet the OP is running windows XP. This, among many other problems, was apparent when using mass storage devices. Common reasons were system not up to date, or the more common, infected system. Many systems I work with have some malware causing the problem you describe.
After 43 minutes on the phone with Verizon they also couldn't figure out what my problem is. I recieved a new phone today and is well. Thanks for the help.
boot into Clock work recovery (red voodoo one)
Mount SD card
then reboot the phone while plugged in and it should be fine

[Q] A500 acer logo screen, Yes, I searched

I'm having some trouble understanding how to get my CPUID. I tried to reply to some of the relevant threads but was not allowed due to some kind of missing "Approval". I'm hoping this gets through. My Acer A500 froze about a week ago while running the clock program. It was used mostly as a night stand toy. I've tried lots of stuff here including trying to install the Acer default roms.
SD_PB_G100W_1.007.03_COM_GEN1.zip and Acer_AV041_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1-FULL-ROOT.zip and Acer_AV041_A500_1.054.00_WW_GEN1-FULL-ROOT.zip. I copied these to my SD card one at a time then renamed them update.zip. None worked. I tried several others without success.
I cannot get passed the CPUID thing. I tried the A500 manager and I got nowhere. My windows 7 PC does see this tablet in APX mode "Hold power and reset buttons "and so did the A500 manager. Now the strange part, the A500 manager did not reveal any text on the program for any of the buttons. I used a screenshot found on the forum to blindly use it. Of course, it did not give me the info I need "CPUID" to do much of anything else. The A500 boots to the Acer logo and that all it does. I tried hardware and software reset, Power + -volume and power + + volume move the orientation lock button. The first ends up showing Android guy dead with red exclamation and the second shows erasing and clearing message, reboots back to Acer logo screen and that's it.
If I could get the CPUID from this thing, I would try the other tools from the forum. I have nothing to lose at this point. I read the CPUID forum threads over the last few days and I'm beginning to lose hope. Can someone tell a noob step by step how to get my CPUID? I have never hooked this tab up to a PC before and I do not have access to an XP machine. If this is a clue, if I just power the tab up to the Acer logo screen, the driver fails but in APX mode, the machine sees the tab.
Please let me know if you need any other info. I'm a PC guy and know nothing about any form of linux/ubuntu.
You have a couple of options...
If you've got a nandroid backup you'll find it in a txt file.
If you've previously had it plugged into yr pc use usbfeview.
Use Linux to retrieve it.
Also if yr pc does not recognise yr tab you won't get very far at all. Ensure u have them installed correctly, both the Acer ones and the usb ones

I've never backed up this tab. Where would I find this text file?

I've never had it hooked up to a PC before it died.

I have no clue how to use Linux.

My PC installs the USB driver correctly in APX mode. When I boot to the Acer logo screen, the driver install fails. I installed the drivers found on the forum before I hooked the tab up to my PC.

At this point I would pay someone who knows Linux to get this working again. I had planned to use it at a relatives wedding to take pics for them and play music at the reception. Looks like I wont be doing that now. Can you tell me step by step how to get the CPUID? I'm willing to try anything other than using it for target practice.

It is a step by step instruction so no need to be a programmer.
Which part of it is giving you trouble?

I know nothing about Linux. Most guys are telling me I need a Linux machine to fix the tab.

You don't have to have a linux machine per say. There are 3 ways to install Ubuntu (most popular linux OS) on a normal windows pc.
1) Install Cygwin. This creates a virtual window to run an ubuntu installation
2) VMWare. Again, creates a virtual window to run Ubuntu
3. Install Ubuntu on top of Windows to have a dual boot system (easiest and more efficient method).
The big difference between 1 & 2, and option 3, is that the first 2 options share resources with both Ubuntu and Windows. This can be a little buggy if you don't have a pretty powerful system (i5 and i7 with lots of RAM).
Where as option 3 gives 100% of the system resources as you boot straight to Ubuntu.
The advantage to options 1 & 2, is that it's easy to uninstall when you no longer need Ubuntu.
Just Google "install ubuntu on windows" and several links to do it. It's actually pretty easy.
Another thing to try first is to download these full ICS Update files for the A500 (501 owners can try this also, but you'll have a 500, but that might can be changed later)
These files are already "decrypted" and are named differently as to keep them separate. Download them all to a folder.
Now, select one of them, rename it to "update" (end result is a file called update.zip) copy it to SD card, boot tab and see if it installs. If it hangs on the install, delete it from SD card, and do the same with the next. Hopefully one of them might take. You may have to try all 4 of them before one works. It's hit and miss.

I tried a few times to install Ubuntu on my Dell 8400. It's a good PC but I do not understand how to "Compile" or install the drivers needed. Can I do this with "Live CD" or a USB boot of Ubuntu without trying to install drivers? The drivers I need for Ubuntu on my Dell are video and on board sound card drivers. Everything else works from the start. I'm very lost when it comes to any flavor of Linux. I've been asking people on several boards for a few years now if they have a working image for the Dell 8400 they could ship to me but haven't got one yet. I would love to get this tablet up and running again. I saw a few listings for Acer A500 repair on Ebay. I wonder if this might be the best route to take? They are charging $50.00 for software repairs and $130.00 for hardware replacement (Motherboard). The hardware replacement is a little steep as I see some used A500s listed starting at $150.00. I would hate to end up buying someone else headache.

I tried all of these just the way you said without success. The tab does not see the update zip. It ends up either with dead Android guy with red ! or stuck on the Acer logo screen. :crying:

If you install, its with a recent "Live CD" (or USB Stick, which I have never used) I prefer the CD version.
I don't have a dell, or know much about them. But if Ubuntu starts up, regardless of sound or perhaps video drivers, there should be no issues in making things work.
As for getting replacement parts, I would think you can almost a better deal with a new device rather than paying for replacement parts.
A working A500/501 goes for about 100-150$ these days,
If the updates I linked you to, didn't work, then it's probably a bad memory block. But you'll have to use Ubuntu, for a couple of reasons, an really no way to avoid it.
1) babsector (although it can be run through windows)
2) UID

I have an old live CD, Ubuntu 10.X I can try. The Dell 8400 is a business class PC I used in my DJ business. I have 5 of them. I'll just install on one of the idle ones and be done with it. Then I'll stop back to get the files. Thanks for trying Moscow Desire.
