Lol, I returned my first Evo due to it not being able to obtain the IP address from sprint for 4G.
So after various testing they gave me a new one today and well now it goes from scanning to connecting to authorizing back to scanning lol. Tried profile update reboot, prl, reboot everything I know of.
I am rooted and nand unlocked, running DC 3.2.3 with newest radios wimax etc.
Got the phone and told sprint i was in a hurry so i didn't let them update it to 1.47
And no it was not working out of the box...
So something is fishy
Well to make things clear...
I got the phone replaced as my old one would connect to 4g also, as I was leaving the store with the software version .6
4g was not working, this phone is fresh out the box. So I did Profile/prl/reboot, still didnt work.
I came home, rooted nand unlocked and installed whitlacks starting over guide... Still didnt work.
Then I installed DC over whitslack, wipred of course... and still doesnt work.
No backing up what so ever...
When I got into DC ROM i just manually installed apps/etc.
I got my replacement, rooted it, unlocked the nand and flashed fresh, and 4G worked. Actually, I installed the patched OTA update from unrevoked, the second release that didn't break 4g, but it still broke 4g for me. Anyhow, installed fresh, 4g worked again and I read that the new wimax radio improved signal with clearwire's 4g. Clear is providing the 4g in Boise, ID, I'm sure, even though it says sprint. So updated to the new radio and wimax driver...4g is broken and now I get no bars in my house; I used to get 2-3. :|
I think these new updates made everything worse!

From all the posts i've seen and from personal experience it seems like 4g works fine until you root. I think the problem is with the PRI reverting back to 1.34 I think it is vs the 1.40 update version. My replacement unrooted updates the PRI and is faster with both 3g and it actually connects to 4g here in Ft. Lauderdale whereas before the replacement with my 1.34 PRI phone I didn't even realize they were rolling out 4g here because it never even showed a 4g signal.
I think the main problem is 4g is not widespread enough so the ROM devs have no way of testing it.
Do the Whitslack method and see how rooted stock works. Something is up with the custom ROM's whether it is nandroid or possibly Titanium backup overwriting settings. Did you use Titanium backup or another to restore settings? I'm sticking with rooted stock for a week or two until it gets resolved. It is working great where a few customs would continually scan...

Here's teh scoop...
I was in Vegas at CES and all was fine. I was tethering and 4G was blazing. Left on Friday, got back to SoCal and on Monday my Epic running Bonzai4All (RFS) would no longer connect to the 4G network. Found out from Sprint there was a trouble ticket in my area and 4G was down for a couple days. It's back up now but my phone won't connect anymore. Took it to a corp repair store (after having flashed back to stock of course) but they couldn't fix it so they ordered me a "new" one.
I don't think it's a hardware issue because when I click the 4G icon the phone cycles through SCANNING>CONNECTING>OBTAINING IP ADDRESS and then it just disconnects. Feels more like a programming issue (ie, dialer codes... then some numeric setting somewhere in the programming menu)
Has anyone else had this happen to them. I did nothing to my phone between the time I was in Vegas and back in SoCal so other than the outage, the phone no longer connecting to 4G seems quite random.
4G is noG
I have the epic4g, I live in Vegas.
Although this is supposed to be 4G for the entire city, the phone spends 95% of the time "disconnected" from 4G.
I have already had sprint replace the phone, the same thing happens with the new phone.
It seems its a software issue, if I turn on 4G and move, do anything, it will disconnect. Heck, it even disconnected in the parking lot outside the Sprint store. Of course they kept telling me there was nothing wrong with the phone when they test, so I go outside, try to connect to sprint.com, get error of no connection and bring phone back in.
On a recent trip, I attempted to use 4G to rent a movie for my son. In the course of 30 minutes, it must have disconnected once every 1-2 minutes. It does not reconnect on its own, you have to manually disconnect, then reconnect to get it running again. It appears if you are "mobile", it has major issues. If you are sitting in one place (not walking or anything) it will keep its connection.
Kind of retarded if you ask me - I know 100% its a phone issue, something is messed up. Of course, when I complain to Sprint, I am the only one having this issue.
I am actually going to try to get them to credit me the 10 bucks a month back, after all, I never use 4G - not because I dont want to, its just not worth the hassle. I cannot even browse the web - it disconnects so often I get the no connection error screen. 3G has no issues, but is slow.
I have searched many forums, but cannot find any fixes for this issue. It would appear that you are having the same deal as I am now.
No idea. My phones locked on 4g 80% of the time. While driving, walking etc. Only use 3g in buildings made of kryptonite that block signals.

I live right outside of Baltimore, and according to sprints coverage maps I should have 4g where i live. We all know how coverage maps go, but i am getting the "obtaining ip address" then fail. But I just kind of ignored it and thought nothing of it.
After seeing other people with similar problems, do you think i should have it serviced? i am paying for insurance.
Did anybody figure this out?
This happened to me after flashing a new rom, seemed to work after a reboot.
i have the same problem, and a simple reboot did NOT my problem.
I know for a fact that I get reception in my house, and I've tried in a Sprint Store when I was testing the Photon 4G. Still can't connect; more specifically it disconnects after attempting to obtain an IP address.
I have already tried messing the WiMAX Extension settings in ##3282#
I'm running SyndicateROM Frozen 1.2 | Genocide 2.0 Kernal | EC05 Modem.
Note: 4G was working before i tested UrbanDecay, which was a EG22 ROM. I did flash SRF1.2 with the EG22 installed. i have tried updating the modem and I'm back to EC05. still no luck.
Suggestions?
This happened to me. Some type of data corruption. I had to Odin back to a prerooted tar, not restore anything, test 4G, working then only restored apps with no data. When I did restore data I lost 4G again. So do not restore any data. Set everything back up again.

Yeah I tried everything first, even had Sprint refresh my phone. I guess some WiMax files got corrupted. You could try a reflash but if your ROM backs up and restores data it probably will still not work. I was able to restore apps only and selectively restore a few apps with Titanium though.

First, do you have to be on 3g to update PRL or Profile?
Second, I have not been able to update my PRL or Profile since I first switched to a EE03 beta rom, I tried MANY other roms since, I even tried ODINing back to stock EC05 like it was when I first bought it and I get nothing. The only thing I ever get is... could not be updated at this time "Unknown Error."
The one fix that involes changing the OMA DM settings did nothing for me and I couldnt really find anything else that would be helpful to me.
This is really frustrating and I do not want to take my phone back to sprint to have them give me a refurb as a replacement. Anyone have any ideas?
bump, anyone got any ideas?
Try to odin back from stock again and you have to unroot before you can get the updates.
You should be able to update prl on any rom... I had the same issue, odin back to stock tried to update prl again it still didn't work so I brought it back to sprint... it failed some test they gave it, and then I got a refurb 2 days later

Updating the Profile updates the handshaking between your phone and Sprint. If you have no trouble making phone calls you are good. But if you can't update anything it is something programmed incorrectly on your phone. Take it to Sprint.

It uses the same data path as the PRL updates do...ever notice how the 3G or 1X icon disappear when doing a PRL or profile update? It commissions the data on the phone, sets up the AAA key, etc so your phone can connect to 3G and 1X data. If your data is already working then don't worry about it, contrary to belief Profile Updates will not make your internet speeds faster.
How do you run 11114 Manually?
Since around 5PM yesterday 8/18/2011 I have been unable to update my PRL or Profile. Attempts return Error:Unknown
I am running ODIN EG22 w/root and no other mods or themes.
Have tried using terminal emulator
Code:
SU
PM disable com.samsung
Reboot
SU
PM enable com.samsung
Reboot
But have had no luck. Was previously able to update PRL with current set up and have been unable to find solutions searching.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
First of all don't worry about Update Profile if your data is already working. Your AA key, etc is already setup.
Load PRL 11115 and enjoy 3g roaming. Enjoy your phone being stuck on such a great PRL. I know I hate when my phone updates the PRL on its own.
Fixing this issue is kinda like your work truck is supposed to only go 70mph and no more. Do you really want to fix the issue that your work truck can go 75mph?

So I just got off the phone with a Sprint CSR who had me jump through hoops and somehow we went back in time, I am now on 60678. WTH?? I'm going to look at how to update the PRL manually here , are these the most current instructions or are there newer methods out there? Also, where can I D/L that 11115 PRL or the latest 6068X?

The How To Load PRL thread has the 11115 PRL. If you can't find the page it is on click the little paper clip on the thread title list next to it. It will show you all the attachments in the thread.
My phone works every but at home, I can't make a call or send a text from home. If I'm anywhere else it works fine. I can't seem to be able talk to the tower, if i use the open signal app it sees the tower and acts like I'm connected.
I'm running CM 7.1.0 speedy, I updated to 7.2 but had issues so i downgraded but that was weeks ago and it worked fine afterdown grageding.
It stopped working on 7-4, I live in the detorit area.
anybody run in to this before or know how to fix it???
*****updated
upgraded the radio, still no luck, flashed back to the stock ROM and still not working after updating the PRL. Called Sprint and the tech had me go though a bunch of resets and reprogramming. He still could not get it to work.
He said there was a issue at thee tower and they were working on it. He finally gave me a $15 credit on the account.
Is there a way to make you phone connect to a different tower?
You can force it to roam.
I believe the setting is under mobile network.
Its usually set to automatic, home is sprint network I believe, and I forgot what the other one is, but that one is roaming.
If you continue to have bad service at home, call Sprint. Then explain what's going on, and remind them that no service at home is grounds for being able to legally break contract. They will most likely offer you an AirWave. Just make sure it's free of charge. Lastly when you call make sure your on a Sense Rom.

I forgot to mention that my wife has the same phone an is setup the same. She has had no problem and my mother in-law has the same problem i do and she is running the stock ROM.

Do a Nand of your current Rom. Then flash a Sense Rom, update PRL / Profile. See if that resolves the issue. If not call Sprint while your still on a Sense Rom. Ask them to reset your Data / Profile on their end.

Yes I know your Sense Rom runs with Zero issues, I have tried it . But he has some other weirdness going on.
I have three different people at Sprint reset my profile, none of it worked. I called on they way home and they are sending me the Air Wave, it is suppose to be free; we will see.
Oddly enough it was worked since I got home, I'm sure it will be out again in the morning. the thing about this problem I don't get is that it isn't just my phone acting up, it's almost like someone is hijacking the signal or cloned my phone or something and the network will not let two phones exist on the same number or address or what ever you want to call it.
Well I'm glad they're at the very least sending you an AirWave. Yes it's supposed to be free if your signal is non-existent at your home. The reason they do that is to keep you as a customer. Just keep an eye on your Bill . As for your phone being cloned, well it's possible. But very unlikely. If someone did it they would need access to your device for a good bit of time. I just noticed your in Detroit . How the hell are you having this issue in Detroit ???
I'm really not sure how one phone will work and one won't. I also really don't get how my phoe won't work since I'm less than a 1/2 mile from the closest tower, according to the Open signal app.
My house is aluminum sided, so I don't know if that is wreaking havoc on the new devices or not. I had a issue in the last year where my wireless router would drop out and I would lose connection with it. After repeat service calls I finally got a tech out that knew what he was doing and sugested that I switch routers or channels. After scanning for wifi for a few days I picked up on about 3 other people being on the same channel. I changed the channel and the problem went away.
I am on Ting which is a reseller of Sprint.
I moved back to Honolulu from SF and now I only have 3G support everywhere I go on Oahu. I'm 90% sure Honolulu should have LTE support.
When in I was in SF and installed CM 10.1 I had to use a custom apns-conf.xml file to get LTE support, because without it all I could get was 3G. However, with the same apns-conf.xml I can only get 3G now in Honolulu. That is why I am fairly sure my problem is with the apns.
My game plan:
Use Odin to flash the Firmware back to MDC then use TWRP to flash back on the original MDC ROM backup I made. Update the PRL. Let the phone sit and then ask to install system updates. Let it do it's thing. Reboot, hope that it will update me all the way up to MF9 or MDL. Hope the I get LTE... if not call Ting. Even if I don't have LTE grab the new apns-conf.xml. Then flash all the way back to MDC. Root the phone and install TWRP. Flash the firmware back up to MF9 and reinstall TriForce ROM. Then install my Titanium Backup of my Apps+data. Install the new apns-conf.xml. Hope I have LTE.
Sooo, before I go spending all day doing that do you think this is worth my time doing? Do you think this will work? Could this problem be related to my APNs or PRL?
EDIT: Okay, TriForce ROM seems to allow me to update PRL, Profile, Samsung Software, Firmware, and UICC Unlock. I updated the PRL and the Profile but I'm still only getting 3G.. at home at least. I'm just happy it didn't seem to get any worse The PRL number did not change however.
EDIT 2: Yes, I am now fairly sure it is an APN problem. However, I found some other posts about this from other Ting users. I'm going to try just messing with the APNs first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2340437
EDIT 3: Hum, so I tried using the APN Backup and Restore app. (It seems this is how I made my original apns-conf.xml backup because the format and naming is the same.) It seems that after I did the Update PRL and Update Profile my phone did grab the Ting APNs just fine, because the backup I made of it looks darn close to the backup I have from the original ROM. Strange though, the apns-conf.xml that is in /system/etc has not changed; it seems that file is like just the default APNs and not the like "Active" apns that the phone is really using. I'll have to look into that. This is such a pain because I am not sure where I should with out a doubt be getting LTE to go and test it at.... I'm not flying all the way back to CA just to test LTE
EDIT 4: Hum, so when I use the APN Backup & Restore app to restore the apns backup I made in CA on the original ROM I do get 3G at my house but I only have 2/6 bars. Then when I do the "Update PRL" it says it updates, then it turns off/on my mobile network. After that I am showing 5/6 bars. I'm now thinking that that PRL stuff should be solving my problem. I guess I just don't have LTE at my house. I'll have to go riding all around town tomarrow and try to get LTE somewhere. Maybe a big open space in the down town aria, or Waikiki.
Definitely keep us posted!
Hum, it seems that Sprint (which is who Ting buys service from) actually dose not have LTE on Oahu yet. According to this post on the Sprint forums. I will still try around town today. However, I now think that after the PRL and Profile update I am in the best shape I could be in judging by it upgrading me from 2 bars to 5 bars.

Snager,
Thanks for the post. I understand your frustration. We are working on bringing LTE to your area. There is no information on what is holding it up but I know we have some towers in the area that are going to be upgraded within the next 3 months.

That sounds about right. Here in SC I don't have it, which is why I switched to Ting. If I'm paying for premium services and not getting it, might as well go with Ting.
Did you know they stopped taking SGS 4 phones? Apparently Sprint wrote them a memorandum to not allow Sprint users with this phone to merge over.
