[Q] LTE problems, PRL or APNs ? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I am on Ting which is a reseller of Sprint.
I moved back to Honolulu from SF and now I only have 3G support everywhere I go on Oahu. I'm 90% sure Honolulu should have LTE support.
When in I was in SF and installed CM 10.1 I had to use a custom apns-conf.xml file to get LTE support, because without it all I could get was 3G. However, with the same apns-conf.xml I can only get 3G now in Honolulu. That is why I am fairly sure my problem is with the apns.
My game plan:
Use Odin to flash the Firmware back to MDC then use TWRP to flash back on the original MDC ROM backup I made. Update the PRL. Let the phone sit and then ask to install system updates. Let it do it's thing. Reboot, hope that it will update me all the way up to MF9 or MDL. Hope the I get LTE... if not call Ting. Even if I don't have LTE grab the new apns-conf.xml. Then flash all the way back to MDC. Root the phone and install TWRP. Flash the firmware back up to MF9 and reinstall TriForce ROM. Then install my Titanium Backup of my Apps+data. Install the new apns-conf.xml. Hope I have LTE.
Sooo, before I go spending all day doing that do you think this is worth my time doing? Do you think this will work? Could this problem be related to my APNs or PRL?
EDIT: Okay, TriForce ROM seems to allow me to update PRL, Profile, Samsung Software, Firmware, and UICC Unlock. I updated the PRL and the Profile but I'm still only getting 3G.. at home at least. I'm just happy it didn't seem to get any worse The PRL number did not change however.
EDIT 2: Yes, I am now fairly sure it is an APN problem. However, I found some other posts about this from other Ting users. I'm going to try just messing with the APNs first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2340437
EDIT 3: Hum, so I tried using the APN Backup and Restore app. (It seems this is how I made my original apns-conf.xml backup because the format and naming is the same.) It seems that after I did the Update PRL and Update Profile my phone did grab the Ting APNs just fine, because the backup I made of it looks darn close to the backup I have from the original ROM. Strange though, the apns-conf.xml that is in /system/etc has not changed; it seems that file is like just the default APNs and not the like "Active" apns that the phone is really using. I'll have to look into that. This is such a pain because I am not sure where I should with out a doubt be getting LTE to go and test it at.... I'm not flying all the way back to CA just to test LTE
EDIT 4: Hum, so when I use the APN Backup & Restore app to restore the apns backup I made in CA on the original ROM I do get 3G at my house but I only have 2/6 bars. Then when I do the "Update PRL" it says it updates, then it turns off/on my mobile network. After that I am showing 5/6 bars. I'm now thinking that that PRL stuff should be solving my problem. I guess I just don't have LTE at my house. I'll have to go riding all around town tomarrow and try to get LTE somewhere. Maybe a big open space in the down town aria, or Waikiki.

Definitely keep us posted!

Hum, it seems that Sprint (which is who Ting buys service from) actually dose not have LTE on Oahu yet. According to this post on the Sprint forums. I will still try around town today. However, I now think that after the PRL and Profile update I am in the best shape I could be in judging by it upgrading me from 2 bars to 5 bars.

Snager,
Thanks for the post. I understand your frustration. We are working on bringing LTE to your area. There is no information on what is holding it up but I know we have some towers in the area that are going to be upgraded within the next 3 months.

That sounds about right. Here in SC I don't have it, which is why I switched to Ting. If I'm paying for premium services and not getting it, might as well go with Ting.
Did you know they stopped taking SGS 4 phones? Apparently Sprint wrote them a memorandum to not allow Sprint users with this phone to merge over.

[Q] updated to 6.5 and now always roaming

---back story---
I updated my vogue from 6.0 to 6.1 and it would not turn on.
After many different attempts (and changing my radio a few times because it kept saying no radio) I got it to load with a rom from a foreign country, then I tried us cellular then sprint and all of them said I was roaming.
I then updated to a kitchen 6.5 rom and it still says I'm roaming.
---------------
My carrier is Inland Cellular (when roaming it is through the Verizon Network)
I'm not actually roaming but the warnings are quite annoying.
So my question is would changing my radio again fix it?/What radio would I use or would it matter?
In one of those updates, if you let any of their customizations run it may have changed the PRL file (roaming file). The only way to get rid of the roaming triangle would be to get one for your carrier (Inland Cellular). I would no recommend placing calls on your phone, you could be roaming on who-knows network.
I'm trying to track down a PRL for your network, but I am totally not finding one. I'll keep an eye out though. If you know a forum for people with the same carrier as you, you might want to look into getting a PRL from them. ^^;
To update your PRL after you have the file, dial ##PRL# on your phone, type your MSL (use MSLGrabber if the code is not 000000), and then hold the box with an empty file name until a selection box comes up, tap it, then find the PRL file on your phone... blah blah blah select okay. Commit the change to the phone, restart...
Now to just find one. -_-
Thank you so much!
Turns out I was roaming on some random network so I did have a few roaming charges, but when I went up to pay the charges I explained to them (the part they would not get mad about) and he said that if I bring it back tomorrow he could fix the PRL, and due to the fact that they don't tell their customers about only updating with download from their site I am not the first person to do this. Thank you for your insight TheXev!
Awesome, glad to be of service.
So turns out my carrier decided not to help... Not because I am running a kitchen rom or anything like that, but because I had an unofficial battery in my phone. (I bought it as a refurb from them and they still said my warranty is now void)
THEN IT HIT ME. I grabbed my old inland cellular titan and extracted the PRL and loaded it onto mine! NO MORE ROAMING!
Problem solved!
Good idea. I've had to do that before. You should post your PRL file somewhere online so others can download it. I don't think you can do it on XDA until you have 10 or more post.

[Guide] How to switch from AT&T to T-Mobile and keep your SM-N900A fully functional

[Guide] How to switch from AT&T to T-Mobile and keep your SM-N900A fully functional
** DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A DEVELOPER. I DO THIS AS A HOBBY AND SHARE MY FINDINGS IN CASE SOMEONE ELSE FINDS THEM USEFUL. **
** THIS WORKED ON MY DEVICE BUT IT MAY NOT WORK ON YOURS. APPLY AT YOUR OWN RISK **
Background
I always hated AT&T. When I got my first US cell phone in 1998, AT&T was a dominant force and Cingular was the underdog that provided better service. So for years I went out of my way to keep it Cingular through all of my relocations and phone number changes. Then AT&T bought Cingular and I was forced to become an AT&T subscriber. Then the iphone came along on the AT&T network, with the unlimited internet plan, which sealed my fate with this carrier for years.
At some point AT&T stopped offering the unlimited plan and I was one of the lucky ones who had their iphone plans grandfathered in. That prevented me for a long time from switching, but it became increasingly clear that AT&T has no intention of letting me use my plan as intended. All the signs were there: from threatening text messages every time I tried to tether my phone, to insulting slow-downs of data transfer after 2-5G of usage. At some point one gets tired of feeling like a criminal who is constantly trying to trick the carrier to squeeze a little more service here and there.
The last straw was when they made it very clear that they will not allow me to use a tablet as a phone, even if it has phone capabilities, even if I let go of my unlimited data plan! Their solution? buy a new data-plan only for your tablet. I am done with this $#(^. T-mobile had me at hello. All it takes is to notice the choice of music they play for you when you are on hold with the customer service: ATT: elevator music, T-mobile: Miley Cyrus.
So, here is what I did to make the switch and keep my note 3 issued by AT&T to use on T-mobile network.
Why?
If your phone is unlocked you can certainly pop the new sim card in and it will latch on to the T-mobile network. However you will be missing all the goodies that come with a T-mobile issued phone. Hence my journey to T-mobilize my SM-900A. A T-mobile Note 3 has an unlocked bootloader. I cannot have that transferred to an AT&T phone. But there are other good things that can be ported over. For example T-mobile's WiFi calling is implemented at the OS level and you cannot just copy over an APK to make it work. So if you follow this guide you will be able to turn your phone on and boot it up to (almost) exactly what a SM-N900T looks and behaves like.
Requirements:
1- Your phone should be on Jelly bean 4.3. Mine was on N900AUCUBNB4 but lower versions will work too. I have no intention of upgrading my phone to Kitkat anytime soon because I simply do not see the advantage. However, an experienced developer should be able to modify this process for Kitkat.
2- Your phone should be rooted.
3- You will need about 5G of empty space to install the T-mobile ROM.
4- Read the instructions below once before you start anything. If any word or phrase does not make sense to you STOP, google, ask questions, make sure you understand it, then continue.
Instructions:
1- Always backup your important stuff before doing a thing like this to your phone.
2- Root your phone if it already isn't. Your options that won't trip knox are Kingo and Towelroot. I recommend the latter.
3- dwitherell has done a great job of preparing a Jelly Bean T-mobile Rom for porting to AT&T. Download TweakedN3v2.0.12614 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2625946
4- This ROM is pre-rooted but contains a few things that should be removed or tweaked for our purpose. Unzip it somewhere.
5- Delete vrtheme directory and bootcolx.img and bootstock.img
6- Replace defaults\install.prop with the file attached below.
7- Replace META-INF\com\google\android\updater-script with the file attached below.
8- Re-zip the whole thing again and call it N3-Tmobile.zip (or whatever you want)
9- Copy that to your sdcard. It may also be a good idea to copy a file manager apk like "File Manager HD" on your sdcard as well so you can later install it when the T-mobile Rom is in place.
10- Install Note 3 AT&T Safestrap 3.71 for Jelly Bean on your phone. It can be found at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2572978
11- Boot into Safestrap recovery and create a Rom slot. Call it T-mobile or whatever you like. Activate it.
12- From the Safestrap main menu, install the N3-Tmobile.zip that you created in step 8 into the T-mobile slot. Be careful not to mess up your Stock Rom slot. The installation may take 3 to 10 minutes. If it takes longer, reboot the phone, wipe this Rom slot and try again.
13- When it is done, go to Safestrap main menu -> wipe -> advanced wipe -> select ONLY Dalvic, data, and cache, and the hit the wipe button.
14- Turn off the phone. Take out your AT&T sim card out, DON'T put your T-Mobile sim card in yet. Turn the phone on and reboot to the T-mobile Rom. Don't enable Wifi in the initial setup.
15- Now your T-mobile Rom is up and running but you don't have internet or cellular connections.
16- In your /system/app directory rename the following to [file_name].apk.bac (this is where the second part of step 9 becomes useful):
FotaClient.apk
FWUpgrade.apk
LocalFOTA.apk
SPPPushClient_Dev.apk
SyncmlDM.apk
16- Turn your phone off, put the T-mobile sim in it, turn on and enjoy.
If you want to swap the sim card back to AT&T, all it takes is to reboot to your stock ROM. Everything will be still there as you left them.
does it work?
Screen shots
Here is how well it has worked for me so far. I'm in Sweden now and their free sms abroad and unlimited Internet has so far worked as promised (although at data rates close to 100kb/s only which is expected. In the first screenshot I'm turning wifi off and as you can see the phone registers on to the local carrier. In the next screenshot I turned wifi calling on which allowed me to call back to the US for free. There was a half second audio delay but the quality was very good. Finally I attached my home screen shot that shows the T mobile apps that you get after this installation.
So far everything has been working great in the US and in Europe for me but please post your experience here if this has worked for you too.
Just to make sure we are on the same page, you had an ATT N3 and did this guide to get the TMO network. Is your baseband and broadband tmobile? That is what I am looking at. The ATT N3 works but I want the TMO Broadband / modems. Can you take a pic on the broadband page please. Does this chicken stract make sence?

Yes, i have an att n3 and i want it to work on t mobile network. The only thing this method flashes onto your phone is a /system partition. In fact that is all that you can do with safestrap. In one of the steps I am instructing you to remove the baseband from the zip so when you are done your baseband is still ATT.
I'm not sure why you want to flash t mobile base band on your ATT phone. The ATT BB (at least the BNB4) is fully capable of handling t mobile 4G LTE and other data bands.
What do you mean by "a picture of the broadband page?"

Second screenshot didn't include a blackout on the I.P. Considering you did that in the first screenshot, just pointing out you might want to for the second one as well.
I don't have a Note 3, my dad does. I'm just browsing the forums for an unlock method for SIM for NC(2?) firmware. I like where this one is going. Dad doesn't want me testing sh^& on his phone though, so no luck there. Sorry, but if another tests and claims it works, I'll have all permission to experiment.

Thanks for pointing that out. The reason I did not mask the second ip address is that in the second picture the phone is on wifi and the ip address is an inside-the-house ip address. These addresses are typical in all internal networks and do not contain any identifying information.

Ah, my apologies. ^^
Switched from AT&T to T-Mobile
I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile and wanted to use my 2 Galaxy Note 3's SM-N9000A on T-mobile with all the benefits of T-Mobiles service (e.g. Wi-Fi calling, etc.). Firstly I had to get my phones sim unlocked, and then to find a rom that would port over T-Mobiles rom SM-N900T. After searching diligently to find answers I came across this thread. Najoor helped me get the rom installed (over PM's) and I unlocked the phones (cellunlocker.net under $30), and I am happily an ex-AT&T customer. I like having control over my cell phone plan, which I believe T-Mobile provides. Thanks again Najoor!
The big question still remains: Why? Just to add wifi calling and t mobile app? The 3g bands are still not enabled so it's either 2G, 4G LTE, or 4G. Does this add native wifi tethering? But you can do that with towel root and xposed framework.
I like to keep my AT&T option open, switching between T Mobile(cheaper $45 for 5GB, no tax) and Go Phone(1GB, $45, but better coverage, no tax also), but I recently rooted to take advantage of the tethering which does not work natively on T-mobile since it's an AT&T phone. I can't imagine being on T-Mobile if the signal is so bad that I would need WiFi calling and the t mobile app works just fine on the AT&T Note 3.
Wait so even if I flash another modem I can't enable the 3G bands? I'm pretty sure I just did
Was looking for something like this.
So, the latest TMOBILE based ROM is only jellybean 4.3 ? Is there a kit kat version.

Look at how to enable the AWS band on the note 3 thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516224
I don't think it has been done. Are you getting 3g in some area? I'm in a good coverage area and only see 4g or 4g LTE. Haven't taken it outside the good coverage area yet but I'm expecting edge only after I leave the 4g area.
I'm having an issuse.
I did exactly what you said, installed safestrap sucessfully, made a rom slot, extracted tweaked whatever, deleted bootstock and bootcolx and vrtheme replaced the two files, installed Tweaked-whatever on that rom slot, deleted Cache, Dalvid Cache, and data and rebooted. It doesn't work. It just gives me a black screen!
What do I do? This doesn't make any sense
EDIT: Didn't realize this thread was dead! Oops!
wifi calling xposed framework

Hello buddy. I would like to try this method to use wifi calling. Where did you get the mod?
It doesn't work.
Just go to Cricket. $60 a month prepaid unlimited talk, unlimited text, and 10GB of data. All on the AT&T network.

The Ntelos S5

I have an ntelos S5 (G900R7). There is no development for this phone anywhere on the internet. Perhaps I can find support here?
---------
So far (you may skip this part):
I have managed to successfully install Spirit Rom with full functionality, by copying my old build.prop into the system directory, and restoring my previous apn settings using the apnsbu. I forget why I left this rom, but I did. Everything I try has some problem! I then proceeded to try just CM11, by itself, and had 3g difficulties. Then, using Kushman's sprint MIUI, (Ntelos shares sprint towers) things seemed to work right, but it remapped my recent app key to menu... (perhaps I can map it back?) and the volume was not controlled by my physical volume buttons.
-----------
Now my favorite rom so far: Mokee Rom It's fast and visually pleasing, but I have wi-fi and phone difficulties.
After imposing my APN settings, I can reproduce these effects:
(1) Before replacing build.prop, the wi-fi works and can be enabled or disabled as I need. Also, 3g works very well at nice speeds, but it says "Verizon Wireless" underneath the 3g indicator bars. However, I cannot make calls. If I attempt to do so, the 3g data stops working, turns orange, and no longer says "3g". If I do this, then no data can be transmitted or received.
(2) After Replacing build.prop with the "good original" copy (which sometimes fixes similar problems in other custom roms) the wi-fi becomes stuck in a constant state of "turning wi-fi on..." but never turns on. 3g still works, but, as in part (1), it will break if I try to make a call.'' Also, in this case it says "Sprint" instead of "Verizon Wireless"
Does any one have advice, or perhaps some build.prop settings to modify? Or maybe there's a different file that would help. Again, my phone is the SM G900R7. Has someone else with this phone had luck customizing it?
Thank you
nTelos S5
Likewise have a nTelos S5, have not found any custom roms that can successfully be installed without data or phone issues.
Also trying to install any ASOP roms resulted with all phone efs data getting cleared.
Upon searched relentlessly the only rom I found that functions is located at
http://teamcspire.com/index.php?/topic/112-gs5-g900r7-r2-teamcspire-nd8stock-deodexed-101814/
its very stock but functions flawlessly for me.
Advise if you have any luck, I will reciprocate.

My advice is to you, is that if you install Mokee rom, do not update it with OTA update. This is what I think broke the network for me. Even after restoring my phone to factory conditions and using Kies, I still had no network. I ended up going to the nTelos store, where they had to reset the network service for my phone on their end... strange.
Anyway, I have made a few roms work, and I suspect I could make more. If you maintain your apn settings, and build.prop, you should be able to make Spirit rom work. The same thing is true for Miui. However, if I remember from my experience correctly, if you do install Miui, then I THINK you should not restore your original build.prop; it may work without it... just restore the apn settings. When you do this, you may have to change the preferred network mode... I am a little freaked out, after my previous experience with Mokee rom, to mess with this any longer, though. I do have a problem with Spirit rom: if I use the Timely alarm clock, the time panel is miscolored, but I believe that could possibly? be fixed by flashing a different kernel. I plan on flashing Spirit tonight.... stock uses up my battery too fast, and Spirit just feels more responsive.
EDIT: I just re-flashed Spirit Rom, and they fixed the discoloration in the most recent version! Also, as before, my 3g and WiFi work fine.
Took me days...
The CSpire shares the model number and ROM. The US Cellular CM11 is the closest. Somewhere in that I lost my ability to send texts (not sure if it's the SMSC or...) and didn't get it back when I ODIN'd to stock. I would LOVE to have CM support for this model.
I also am in the same boat as you guys. I would love to get another reliable ROM on this phone. I just have bad memories of purchasing my last one (Sprint GS3) from ebay, and having one hell of a time making the MMS work after flashing it for nTelos. However, I never did have to mess with any of the APNs or build.prop settings on that one. I would think the Sprint ROMs should be the closest compatible ROM, being that nTelos and Sprint do share towers in WVa and Va (Sprint actually has zero towers in these states, and leases nTelos towers instead).
Is using EFS Backup by Wanam a good method to insure the EFS does not get screwed up?

You might try saving out your wpa_supplicant file from the stock ROM and replacing it on the flashed ROM. This has worked for me before on my GS3. That might take care of the wifi anyway.
I'm also on ntelos with the s5 now. But it is a us cellular unlocked by them phone. Stuck in a ntelos sim card that I bought from store and everything works. Except 4g. I can live w/o it but it's kinda like a puzzle now. How could I enable this to work on ntelos?
Depending on where you are, ntelos does not have 4G in many places yet. It's still very spotty in West Virginia.
Has anyone taken the OTA Lollipop update? If so, how is it working and does it lock or put in a new bootloader?
I have. It's a little laggy at times, gets really hot when using it while charging and battery drains a little faster. Not sure about the bootloader

I think I will hold off for a while. My stock NK1 is laggy enough as is. Damn, I wish there was a compatible ASOP ROM available for this phone.
Honestly, this Samsung G5 is the absolute worst phone I have ever owned! I would like to get a S6, but my experience has been so bad with this S5, I am almost afraid to stick with Samsung. However, my S3 was awesome!
Just found out that the heart rate sensor is active when the phone is on no matter if S Health is open or not.
I am in the Richmond area on Ntelos. They have stated they have sold their bandwidth to T-Mobile and we are to find another carrier. My phone is not even a year old and no other carrier will activate it. Being I own mine outright and paid close to $600, I am about to lose my mind knowing that I will have a shiny expensive very small tablet in a few months. Has anyone a clue how to change this phone over to GSM or something useful. Verizon refused to even try, though I know when I tried Straight Talk's Verizon Sim it did dial to Verizon's customer service. But Straight Talk nor Verizon would activate it.
Ideas and suggestions welcome.

page plus,i am an ntelos dealer and pageplus dealer i flash phones to and from both companies everyday i am in ruckersville va 12 mile north of charlottesville lemme know if you need help you right its the enitre eastern side of the companyh is gone now to tmobile but you can still activate on frawg..ive done many for customers
Thanks for the info. I am on the frawg side of things now. Their plans were too much when mine ended and I didn't need a phone at the time. Then a few years later, yeah I made my S1 last almost 4 years, I bought the S5 late last year outright. Loved the S1. Made that do everything it just did everything slow at the end.
Anyway, am glad there are options of some sort. Have been reading the reviews of pageplus. What kind of speeds are you getting on it with 4G? Their map shows coverage everywhere which makes me a bit uneasy, as in too good to be true. Is it a simple flash or require editing?
If I can't do something else with the phone, I may try the band opening options. According to the phone specs, it should already have all the Verizon bands but they refuse to activate it due to the meid it seems. I have a feeling this topic may get more viewers as the Ntelos off switch day comes closer.
Google Fit was the culprit for the heart rate sensor staying on. Un-installed it and fixed it
After all this time, has anybody found a ROM that works well on this phone?

My internet is not working but I can get talk and text
In case nobody has seen this, there is a now a CyanogenMod 5.1.1 ROM available now for nTelos. I have been running it for 3 days now and I really like it. Good battery life too. Very stable and very speedy. There are some occasional bluetooth audio stuttering issues, but nothing terrible.
See this thread.

[Help] LS997 rooted, DevDigitel rom not getting any service

Hi,
Hopefully this is the right place to post, as this account is too new to post in the dev thread.
For the past few days i have been on the latest rom from this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/rom-ls997-stock-debloated-su-goodies-t3531923 (version 4.0HHH) but i cant get any service, be it 3g or 4g (Sprint, LS997). I can text and make calls, however. I've tried everything i can think of and have been searching frantically for help. A list of things i have done so far, to no avail:
wipe data and reinstall rom
update prl
change apn
update profile through sprint zone app
use shortcut master to try to change apn
flash different roms, such as the one found in the dirty santa thread, none of which work
activating my phone by dialing ##873283# - after a while it said my phone was activated, restarted, but then no service
I have been using an app to check up on which networks i'm connected to, and it always says eHRPD. I don't think the problem is that there are no towers in range, because my family members all have 4g lte.
At this point i'm really not sure what else i can do, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
edit - for a bit more info, when i go into settings and try to change the apn all the options are grayed out. the options are: internet, ota, pam, and vowifi, with internet being the only one with a selection circle next to it. thats why i used shortcut master, which was suggested in the devdigitel thread. when i access the apn settings through there, it has 3g_apn, internet, pam, ota, vowifi and a bunch of dummies. i can select 3g_apn or internet, but i dont think either of them make a difference. when i try to make new apns they dont save and i cant select them.
edit 2 - I went back and flashed the sprint stock rom from the dirty santa thread (https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=385035244224409782) and then reset the network by dialing ##72786#, then activated it again by dialing ##873283#, and after a prl update and profile update (while connected to wifi) i get 3G on and off and i had 4g lte (for the first time in weeks!) today out in the city. I think the coverage by my house just sucks, but its very frustrating nonetheless. still doesnt seem like a permanent fix, because 3g is very spotty and 4g only lasted for a little bit
rowing the same boat
i am stuck in a similar rut myself. have you had any luck with the problem, OP?
after a successful root/unlock of bootloader and running the stock rooted rom for a few days, I decided to take the plunge and install a custom rom, after my desire for V4A got the best of me. having had problems with modem signal quality in the past, I am out of habit continually checking my signal level. Before flashing the custom ROM, my signal was around -70 to -77 db .. immediately after clean flash of custom ROM my signal level dropped to -117 and lower. when I do see something show up, it is a 3g icon, and then only for a faint second or less. have yet to see the 'LTE' icon show.
I have tried ##72786#, ##873283#, updating prl/profile. deleted via fastboot : system, fota, misc. reboots, reflashes dirty and clean.
still, i yield a totally undesirable (read: not there at all) signal. i have been using Samsung telephones since the Transformer days (pre OG galaxy) and in a situation like this, one would typically have a modem file to flash via 0din. Is there an equivalent to this for LG telephones? I admit my noobishness with the way of doing things with LG, but i am not unfamiliar with adb/fastboot/0din.
Could myself and OP somehow inadvertantly disable a few bands on the modem? is this repairable?
i realize its anecdotal, but still, my signal took a header immediately after flash of the new ROM (i am hesitant to name it, in case someone interprets it as casting shade at another. ) Could this be the reason? Am i missing something really friggin stupid?
Have you found a fix? I'm in the exact same boat.
Hi there!
I had a similar issue with my LS997 as well - I went through all the troubleshooting with sprint, did everything that you've done including installing the stock rom. I was never able to fix it on my own - I had to go to the sprint repair center that was in town, and they used LGup to restore my phone to factory.
The issue that I was having, was that I had data, but couldn't place calls or send texts. When I tried to place a call, it would tell me that my phone was not activated. Texts just wouldn't send. I spent the better part of two days scouring everything that I could find on the issue, and couldn't come up with a solution. It repeated the issue on every rom, every update, everything. This is all that worked for me.
I've decided to keep my phone on stock until we can get our hands on LGup and a stock kdz, since that is what will resolve that particular issue.
Did you come clean and tell them it was rooted? I may have to go in the store today and do this. The phone is almost useless at this point since I can't receive/send calls or texts.
I did come clean, but I carry the nice 13 dollar a month insurance on it. Also been a customer for near 4 years so that helps as well - I didn't tell the rep that I was talking too, I told the tech that was working on my phone. It's my experience that reps care, techs do not. Especially if it's that easy to fix, roughly 15 minutes or so.
Sorry to hear you guys are having issues.
It seems a small hanful of users are experiencing some service issues
Have you tried to do ##brand#
And let it re-activate that way?
I never activated my test device prior to dirty santa and have no idea how it acted before root.
But after root ive been 100% Lte or 3g 1x depending on area. I did have issues that after any rom flash i do need to do a profile update or a ##update# to return service
To be honest. Lte isnt provisioned by the device at all. Its only provisioned by the lte sim card.
If you ##data# and hit view is your ptn and msid present?
If not this is why texts wont work
For data. Ive found you can use the shortcut master and access all the bands for our handests without the msl.. I can get the msl for those who dont have but its not needed for this process.
You use the shortcut master lite app from playstore.. Then go to search and search mobile network settings. Or lte.
Make sure its set to cdma/lte
As well have you confirmed under your settings you have a network set to lte/cdma?
This seems to get unchecked sometimes..

Ill be busy tonight but most nights im willing to txt call or video and help with q/a and issues.
I'll give what you suggested a try and report back.
I tried ##brand# and it cleared some settings and rebooted but I still have no network. I did ##data# and went through all the settings and neither ptn or msid are present. Phone is set to CDMA on device settings.
I used Shortcut Master (Lite) and could not find a setting to select CDMA after searching for lte. No search results when I searched for mobile network settings.
To add some information, I live in a very rural area where my phone is always roaming. Today I was in an area where I get LTE so I wiped my phone, flashed the LS997 stock rom and did ##873283#. This enabled data and I got LTE but still no text or voice. I wiped my phone again and flashed your rom, went through the same process and got the exact same results.

pm me or hangouts.
we need to add some settings, or contact sprint care, ask for your msl, and get your msid, you can manually activate it.
Check in about phone under phone number and min ....I lost both and am going to have to get sprint to flash my phone back to stock also

I cannot get LTE to any APN work right with any custom ROM on the Moto G4 Play. :(

I have the Moto G4 Play (XT1607) (Harpia) and I have decided to flash LineageOS (lineage-14.1-20170131-nightly-harpia-signed.zip) on it using TWRP v3.0.2 r5. After getting it installed I noticed that it was not connecting to my 4g LTE Internet (I have Ting). So I figured I needed to make some changes to the APN settings. So I go to Settings>... More> Cellular Networks and the moment I click on "Cellular networks" I get an error message saying "com.android.phone has stopped". After reflashing and trying again a few times with the same result, I tried using a completely different ROM. AOKP. (aokp_harpia_nougat_nightly_2017-01-31.zip) and I ran into the same exact problem I was having with LineageOS.
I then tried to see if I could force my way into the APN configuration using an app called "Change APN". This worked, but now I see the message "Access Point Name settings are not available for this user". I decided to ignore this and click on the + to create a new APN. After filling the correct info out for Ting APN, I click on "Save"... and it doesn't save at all.
I decided to revert to the stock rom, and everything works perfectly fine with the stock rom. 4G LTE on Ting works fine. Whenever I try using a custom ROM of any kind, I run into the problem I described above. I don't know if I am forgetting to do something, or completely doing something wrong. I could use some help with this guys.
Isn't Ting a Sprint service? I didn't think CDMA-based networks had APN settings to configure. Verizon and US Cellular have always used *22XXX for programming, as far as I can remember.

Yes. Ting is a Sprint service. Well either way LTE isn't working and the 3G keeps randomly turning on and off whenever I use a custom ROM. However, when I use Stock firmware, everything works perfectly fine. I am unsure what is causing the issue.
It seems nearly all custom ROMs at this point are having data connectivity issues. I'm trying to find a nandroid of the original xt1607 rom so I can just go back until its all sorted out.

With Ting you can choose to use Sprint or T-Mobile. I am using the T-Mobile side of Ting and you do need to add Ting's APN settings for it to work. I am still on factory ROM but watching closely to see what others are experiencing with custom ROMs.

I haven't noticed any issue with my GSM ting service on lineage. I get LTE and the WiFi/LTE handoff seems to work. I don't install many apps and don't let them run in the background, so perhaps there's a conflict between them that's shutting down LTE service. This is just a guess.
Anyone have any information pertaining to this subject? I've searched hours on hours to no avail. I run U.S. Cellular and on the newest RR-5.8.1-OMS after I go to Settings>More>Cellular Networks>Crash. Every time. Resets my radio and picks right back up again. Everything works until I'm in my house, then I'm roaming and there's no way to manage in settings because of the crash.
I looked around in the file system and in /data/data/com.android.phone/ there is no files, no .db files or anything. I don't know of there's supposed to be either. But like OP stated, stock rom is flawless.
Would I be and to copy com.android.phone from stock and restore after flashing? I don't know what to do but this is with every single custom ROM out right now on every release. Data and everything works fine as far as I can tell but just no way to configure the settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Just out of curiosity, have you tried the *22XXX thing yet?
EDIT: Just so we're clear, with you all who have CDMA phones, when you go into "IMEI Information," it does show both an IMEI and an ICCID, right? Because if not, I think I figured out why your LTE isn't working.
I tried, I tried dialing *22999 (guessing that the x stood for the 9 button in T9 language) and pressed the make a call button. Am I wrong about the "XXX" part? Because I did try that when I seen it previously in the thread earlier but had the same thoughts.
So to make that novel a shorter version, what exactly should I dial?

It depends on the carrier and the model of the phone. For most Tracfones, it's *22890. For US Cellular, I've seen it as *228 and *22894. You may have to call your carrier and ask what their phone programming code is.
Aaah ok I got you now. Yes I've tried that on nearly every ROM. Matter of fact I just noticed I posted a little off topic almost, but I'm here for the relevance of com.android.phone crashing EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to open Cellular Networks. The only ROM I will say it doesn't force close on is the Slim Nougat ROM, but I don't run that because instead of Cellular Networks settings making com.android.phone crash its when you place a call and then it force closes the UI part of the call but still carries the call through. I forgot to mention that by the way, whatever it is in Slim that is the making the different reason for force closing com.android.phone could probably be a pretty easy red flag for someone better equipped for this Lind of troubleshooting than myself!
Thank you for the suggestion though on the *22(8 in my case)

After I posted that, I went back to try and see if Lineage was able to pick up my phone's MEID (even though I use a GSM SIM, the MEID is still tied to the phone hardware). For some reason, Lineage is not reading it, and I think all of your problems are being attributed to that fact.
The way CDMA phones work (and god, do I hate this), is your 2G/3G network is tied to the phone MEID, while the LTE SIM is data only. The OS needs to read both the 14-digit MEID (sometimes shows as a 15 digit IMEI where last digit is 0) as well as the 20 digit ICCID (SIM Number). A phone may also use the SIM number itself as an IMEI (BYOP SIMs do this) by dropping the first five digits of the 20 digit SIM number.
If you phone is showing only one 15 digit number in the system settings, then it's either the MEID OR the SIM, not both. So either you have calling and no LTE, or LTE and no calling. You can't program APN settings because the phone has no idea what ID number to tie APN settings to. This is actually a rather serious conundrum.
Ok ok, makes sense. I checked my Status info, every ROM has dual SIM capability by the way so I don't know if that would effect anything for xt-1607, but I looked at SIM slot 1 info and it reads my MEID correctly with 14 digits. I couldn't find anything about ICCID. My head pounding question here though, why in the hell (pardon the language) is everything flawless on stock, but on every ROM this problem occurs? Here's my next killer, everything works like it should for me, LTE, 3G, Calls, SMS/MMS, just can't change any of the settings due to a force close, AND I put my friends Straight Talk SIM in and it fired right up with no force close when going to change Network settings...?!

I think you just answered your own question. As stated in PCMag back in 2015, "Nobody makes a Dual-Sim phone compatible with Sprint or Verizon." It legitimately believes your MEID is a GSM-based IMEI, and is attempting to cross the streams, so to speak. And the only way your friend's StraightTalk SIM would work is if it was piggybacking off ATT or TMo's networks (the MEID would have been paired to the other phone causing a mismatch).
If you look at the stock ROM for this phone, you will see a BUNCH of system apps for programming Sprint and Verizon network information. They never made it into the custom ROMs we're using. FWIW, here's my thoughts on the matter. Someone needs to go back and make a single-SIM variant of these ROMs, as well as a flashable ZIP containing the necessary APKs for Android to detect the necessary information correctly. And if that doesn't happen, then everyone who bought an XT-1607 has to ditch their carrier and move to a GSM carrier.
That makes complete and total sense! Because I wasn't thinking this while time of it but I was in Oklahoma at the time where the main towers are AT&T, matter of fact Sprint and U.S. Cellular lose almost all signal right when you hit the county line where I was at. Verizon only gets signal because it's Verizon, lol. Reason I say that is because I was wondering why this whole time I has full signal with LTE coverage and completely list everything when I went hone, because where I live is complete opposite, there is hardly any GSM coverage, we don't even have an AT&T store, just Verizon, Sprint, USC.
So, with that being figured out, my laptop just recently kicked the bucket on me so I'm out for the most part, I do have a trick to swap files in and out of a compressed archive without extracting it in any way! But, it takes a while, not too much longer I guess but nowvi just remembered everything is pretty much .dat files so nevermind that.
Not that this thread isn't the most popular, but where would be the best place to take this request too to get the most attention from it? I mean if I had to go back to stock, so be it, but I'm a little spoiled to the custom life. Lol.

IIRC, there is a Verizon thread with 80ish replies, but I think a developer like Squid might need to be made aware of this, so I might copy this into the Lineage thread.
A bit of good news. While reflashing all the time that were force closing when opening cellular networks, I looked in /data/data/com.android.phone/ and was looking, now remember to go back to that directory after I say all this, I found that directory was empty, on all of the Roms. Was curious so I flashed back to stock. Went to the same directory, BOOM! com.android.phone was not empty, in that folder I found 2 folders that were now populated with in:
1: (/files/ )I now had a file named carrierconfig-com.android.carrierconfig- (and after the dash was my ICCID number) so for this directory I need /data/data/com.android.phone/files/carrierconfig-com.android.carrierconfig**ICCID** (replace **ICCID** my ICCID number)
2: then there was this /data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs/_has_set_default_values.xml
and
phone/shared_prefs/com.android.phone_preferences.xml
These files are missing on all the Roms, I know this doesn't since everything, but I know for almost a fact it's a good chunk of something that needs to be available. Can I copy these files and move them into place, and set permissions how they were? I ran out of time tonight, and am busy all week so this is mainly for reference I guess. More research told me these files can be edited to change what is available to configure in cellular network settings like option to change from 2G, 3G, LTE, APN, and so on. Sorry for the mess, that's all I have for right now.

That is definitely a major find! My only concern is even if you do that, there might be further missing components that would cause Dialer to crash on startup or some other wacky side effect. However, if you can make it work, then it's possible the proper APN settings will load by default and you'll no longer need to change them.
If you can, go into the System Apps on the stock ROM and look for any APKs branded by/with Sprint, VZW or USCellular, or anything CDMA related. They might be necessary for reading the SIM's ICCID.
That's what I was thinking too, and sadly for me I don't really know EVERYTHING to look for so it'll be mostly out of trial and error for me to figure it out. I wish they didn't compress Roms into .dat so I could use a root explorer to swap between tabs rather than copy, flash the rom, paste files and then if that didn't work start all over on restoring stock, so on and so forth. I miss my laptop. =(
Updates?
Has anyone looked into this further? I'm experiencing the same problem with the latest LineageOS nightly. US Cellular Prepaid with an XT1607.
I noticed that in my case i had to skip the Insert Sim thing on 1st boot. It never did whatever it wanted to there. (Maybe because I have no signal or weak roaming where I live?)
I'm seriously considering trying it from an area that I have good service in..
