Showing my Newbness: What is the biggest hurdle to building froyo from source for the Incredible? How do HTC phones that came out at the same time and later have Froyo roms already and we have nothing? I don't get it. I started reading the developer guide to try and set my own kitchen up and get an understanding of how this works. Can anyone enlighten me as to how the Evo, Desire, Nokia, Atari 2600 and Nintendo DS (Last 2 are jokes) have froyo builds and we have nada??

Not many dev's have our phone plus it was the last one rooted as well. It sucks but it'll come eventually.
I thought the Evo was the last. I guess I can understand the phone shortage. Thanks for the fast reply!
The EVO was immediately rooted and is FAR easier to root as well. We are the new kid.
The EVO was rooted before it was even released, due to the unrevoked1 team.
I helped a friend downgrade her moto, root it and upgrade to Froyo. Then she smoked me in the benchmarks.... This wait is painful!
Ok. Done whining now.
I tried to port the Froyo rom for the desire over, using the newb kitchen, it just caused a boot loop. I did a logcat and it seemed like it couldn't create any folders in the /data partition for some reason. Thank goodness for nandroid.
I guess that's why I'm a Network Engineer and a 39yr old college student, instead of a developer.

but in real life usage, not some benchmark, how did the moto feel speed wise...
personally i went from a moto to an incredible (back when the inc first came out) and even though I had my moto at 1.2ghz, the inc felt way smoother.
course I have yet to see froyo on a moto... i have one sitting in my desk drawer up at work, might should try throwing froyo on it just to see I guess...

Dude! I gave her the kernel to put it back at its native speed of 800MHz (didn't want it getting hot on her) and that thing was fluent. The JIT compiler is UNREAL!! Have you seen the video where the Nexus smokes the Evo and Droid X, because it was running Froyo? That, and this [email protected] coffee, is why I'm so antsy about it!
I bought an Eris with the promise that I it would be updated to 2.1 from 1.5 within two weeks. Needless to say, I did not get the update for five months. So, I'm not holding my breath for Froyo to land on our phones anytime soon. Even when HTC completes the build for our phone, Verizon will take forever hacking it up so it works the way they want. For instance, I'm really sure they will leave that tethering option intact for us to use for free.
I wish I knew enough to compile it from source for us. I've compiled my own linux kernels before, but its easy to compile them for the machine you're working on. Compiling for HTC proprietary hardware is out of my league.
*sigh* I'll just have to be patient.
Welp
I have to believe that the rom developers are not sitting around waiting until the Xth request for FroYo comes in ... just so they can gauge demand
It will happen when it happens ... trust me, I am dying for FroYo --- I need bluetooth to trigger voice dial.

I wasn't requesting it. I asked why every other device has it already; even one that was released after the incredible. And what was the big hurdle.

i guess vzw sent the update back to moto because security certificates were being deleted when you update from 2.1 to 2.2. upgrade has been pushed back 2-3 weeks. http://www.unwiredview.com/2010/09/...ets-custom-rom-droid-x-froyo-upgrade-delayed/

if you want froyo, then flash the upgrade thats already available on the forum.. its not a big deal whatsoever.. then when the official one comes out, SBF back to 2.1 and OTA it

I know im not updating to the new 2.2 officially through the OTA system.. Im going to wait for someone to pull the file from there phone and then incorporate root into it and then ill flash it through the forum instead, much safter that way as far as keeping root goes

I know that quality android devices are being rapidly released, but the X is still a cornerstone device for the verizon and motorola. So i can't imagine that it won't at least get gingerbread.
Hope I Didn't Screw Up
I started with the Droid 2, but I fell in love with the Droid X - more memory, more screen real estate. I figured that I could wait a few weeks for them to get the same update to 2.2 that I ALREADY HAD with the D2. Someone please tell me that I didn't make a major mistake. I'm committed now. Once I switched out to the D2 this evening - VZW said there will be no more switches. I thought I made the right choice...now I'm starting to feel a bit of trepidation. Please help me brothers and sisters. I waited 3 weeks just to get this phone, please don't tell me that Motorola is going to pull a Microsoft. That's why I left those bastards at AT&T...I got sick of Microsoft's games with WinSlo 6.1, then 6.5, but only if you buy this new type of phone. I love the Android system. I wanted to see what the regular stuff looked like before I started 'rooting' and 'flashing ROMs' like I was doing nearly every week with Windows. Please tell me I haven't waited and sacrificed for nothing.

You made the right choice!!! I wrestled over the DX and D2 as well... side by side... there is no question the DX is the best!
As it is right now... the DX is still great! Just a couple of more weeks, then OTA.. Froyo 2.2..
Then, I'm gonna back up the phone and start loading some other ROMs!!
Actually, the droid x is slated for end of life of next march.
I can't post the link but do a google search for droid x end of life. The first hit should be to an androidforums.com post which links to another site showing a pic off verizon's systems.

Technology is moving too rapidly. When the "top of the line" phones are actually released, you can believe that there are already better phones in development waiting to takes it's place.

End of life means the device will not be sold anymore at the specified date; however, support for the phone will continue.
never expect a phone to have continued support. The d1 was just dropped from the list of devices that can handle flash. Even though it was the phone they were using to show off flash on android.
Expect the worst, hope for the best...
So I was thinking.....
With all the Nexus S rumors floating around I ad a thought. Why would Samsung put much effort into 2.2 when 2.3 is coming soon. Maybe we will skip over 2.2. Also I am hoping a Nexus S will allow us have have a good shot at getting a stock Android build or a stable cyanogenmod version because it will be based on Samsung hardware.
One can only hope, or maybe me thinking is not such a good thing after all.

Samsung's efforts are complete for the most part, regarding 2.2. They have released it to (all or most, no confirmation) Galaxy S carriers. It is now up to the carriers to accept (as has been done by several) or reject (which is usually the case with VZW).
We've, of course, gotten zero verification that VZW has received anything, but based purely on the fact that it is already *out* on other SGS devices, one can logically assume VZW is the one holding the process up at this point...again, as usual.
Sounds like buisness as usual for VZW. Reminds me of my good old BlackBerry storm.
the nexus S will likely be a much a different phone while being very similar, it will likely not use RFS filesystem as it is garbage, and it will be a GSM model, while one would question why put out froyo so late in the game to your flagship, what makes you think they could have gingerbread ready if froyo still isn't ready, im primly on the same boat as everyone else and am getting tired of being jerked around while older, slower, less selling phones receive an update that we can't even get a date on.

Why are people so upset about the Froyo delay? The Motorola Backflip that came out in March just got updated to 2.1. The Fascinate was released 2 months ago and shipped with what the Backflip was just upgraded to. It would be nice to have Froyo on the Fascinate, but is it really that big of a difference between 2.1 and 2.2 that people can't just be patient and wait for it?
I'm not 100% on this, but I don't think an upgrade from 2.1 to 2.3 can be done while completely skipping over 2.2. Not an OTA at least.
Actually most people think that if Nexus S is indeed Galaxy S that means that all Galaxy S will benefit, this is not true. Even if all other Galaxy S version receive 2.3 and fascinate doesn't, we can't do anything about 2.3 because the 2.3 kernal isn't here. OS and kernal are two different things. We've had OS sources for the longest time because it is released by Google, that doesn't mean anything if we don't have the working kernal. Devs tried to build 2.1 kernal from the ground in the past with Droid Milestone(?) but that was hell and no one would even try to do that ever again.
So stop with Nexus S = Galaxy S. Even if that is true, unless it is exactly same as Fascinate, we won't benefit anything from that, just like we can't benefit from Internation version, Vibrant, Epic 4G, and Captivate Galaxy S. We need specific "Fascinate" kernal code.
You are exactly right. We couldnt have gingerbread for the exact same reason we can't have froyo now. Think about. I think the fascinate is doomed. Thank God for our good devs, they can keep us up to date, til LTE, At which point, im out!!!

I agree with ksizzle.. I'm starting to think this phone is doomed
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I wouldnt say its doomed at all . like dude said , its only been two months . Yeah other carriers have it already and vzw is notorious for things like this... but give it a little more . Im probably the most impatient guy around here , i mean the ONLY reason i care at all about it is so development picks up on it . I could care less about playing videos in a browser without an app haha .
I know there is a little more than flash .But there isnt really anything WRONG with 2.1 . Just lack of development ... and even with that said , new kernals are popping up , new roms ,etc . I think this phone is far from dead. i just think we are really impatient haha .
im def being pessimistic but i'm just getting flashbacks of having a blackberry tour last year and being on crackberry forums like wheres our update? and the tour being like the redheaded step child of verizons phones and i jus got deja vu w/ this delayed 2.2 situation...
and then its like gingerbread is coming out now, so there will b phones on 2.3 while we JUST get 2.2.... how long is it gonna take us to get 2.3. im fairly positive it won't b as timely as it should... so i kinda feel doomed lol... i love this phone but dam
while it may have only been two months since this phone came out froyo has been out since may 19, 2010 to be exact. That puts us at six no that behind the current OS, which In a week or 2 will be the old one. However, with that said, I think there are some things in store for everyone that will make this phone MUCH more enjoyable and hopefully we can get it soon.

I have to agree. I remember going through this when I had my Droid and being unimpressed with 2.2. Other than Flash, which for me isn't even a huge deal anyway, I didn't see what all the fuss was about.
I definitely am DYING for a GPS fix though. As for backlights, not sure what's wrong with them unless you're talking about how long they stay on but I thought that there is already a mod for that anyway, no?

Guys, i might not be a active poster in this forum, but i am an active reader [100+ hits per day minimum]. Being a n00b in android developement, it might sound kinda funny. But WHAT ARE THE DEVS DOING! HAVE THEY MOVED TO ANOTHER DEVICE? I dont think its already time for the myTouch slide to be outdated. It has a 600 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM and other specs that are not outdated yet. Companies are still releasing phones having less specs than this. I see other phone's forums full of roms, kernels and other stuff. But i have been watching myTouch slide developement forum from few days, but there have been no posts at all, not even a clue of what the developers are doing. By no means is it dead.
Dragons lie still in deathlike slumber until awakened to unleash their powerful presence upon the world of mortals yet again...aka no the slide isn't dead . Development has slowed a bit but that's mainly because there are a few key ROMs out that are being focused on. I'd rather have a selection of 3 or 4 good ROMs than dozens of crappy ones wouldn't you?
Edit: You might also want to change the title to "Is the myTouch Slide dead?" so people don't come here expecting to flame and mods don't move it without reading.
yea true...it is better to have few good roms than many bad....but it is even getting difficult to find few good roms, the only good one i have found is cyanogenmod. I will try ararays once it comes out.i hope it is great.

The myTouch 3G Slide software (Espresso) framework was completely ready for deployment in March of 2009. The fact that the device took yet another entire year to be released tells me that it is the red-headed step-child of T-Mobile and SHOULD have come out in 2009, NOT mid-2010. They will not release Froyo - all of you optimistic thinkers will continue to deny this and hope for the best, but the reality is that it was a failed device before it was even released.

T-Mo announced a month or 2 ago that the Froyo2Slide OTA will be out in December. I'm guessing next week.
It can't be dead if roms are still being developed on it.
daniel, arayray, joker, others (you know who you are).....
are doing the same thing as other devs are doing on other phones.
And it's definitely much more alive than it was a couple months ago.
Froyo/Sense hybrid + some cool features...... = definitely not dead.
A big thanks to the devs/modders.
Until CM other Modders/Devs dont produce any roms then its dead. How would you consider this phone dead when you have CM support and a nightly everyday or so. This phone isnt dead

Not saying it absolutely won't happen, but I'll believe it when I see it.
The development for the Slide is much much slower yes, and I am definitely not a fan of the lack of kernel development for this phone. Most of the sense roms look and feel the same, in my opinion. None of the froyo sense ports work too well, most of them either kb lights or wifi is broken. The eclair ports are pretty good, but I still prefer cr_mod. Cm6 is fairly active, but honestly, it's kind of a boring ROM. It's great and fast, but when I had my g1 I loved more the ROMs that were cm roms, plus awesome theming and the devs own twists and performance tweaks. Why don't we have more of that? We have some themed cm6 roms from miguel and one other I am blanking out on, but they are based off of nightlies, most from october or earlier, before many issues were fixed or improvements made.
Honestly, it'd be cooler to have more than just cyanogenmod and sense roms, which is why I'm excited for arayraymod, but where I'd really like to see a development boost is in the kernel area. I'm stable to 844mhz, pretty good. But our kernel from dumfuq lacks things like the brainfuck scheduler, I think it's called at least, and of course, smartass cpu governor. If we see anything I would like to see smartass incorporated. At least an undervolt?
I know, I'm digressing, this isn't a request thread by any means. The Slide isn't dead I don't think but sometimes I can't help but compare our forums to pretty much any other android phone and see how our development is depressingly slow. At least it isn't totally dead yet. If that tmo froyo ota really does come out then it may give a needed boost, hopefully at least.

The thread starts off as your typical useless thread, but the more you read, the more possible it is that Froyo will be released. There are some independent accounts of what HTC and/or T-Mo said, but I'll say this now: if it doesn't come out by the end of December then it aint ever coming out.
I still think my previous statements about the Slide being heavily delayed and otherwise a failure (to T-Mo), are true. We'll see if T-Mo wants to hold up their end of the bargain on Froyo, however.
I think I'm up for a full upgrade in the next couple months. Come March, I'm planning on selling the Slide and getting something more top-of-the-line. I originally went with this phone because of the keyboard, but after having Swype and SwiftKey for a while, there's just no need. We got my wife a 4G yesterday and it's pretty sexy.

Flash: You are using the Flash Lite plugin that came with stock Espresso, most likely, as Flash 10.1 with hardware acceleration requires an ARMv7 processor where the Slide possesses an ARMv6.

Well, Motorola had already done the majority of the work involved in porting 2.1 to the Cliq before T-Mobile started dropping high-end phones. It would've be cost ineffective of them to just drop the project all together. I will bet you almost anything that the Cliq will not receive an official 2.2 OTA (even though there are some alpha unofficial ports).

I'll believe it when I see it. I love T-Mobile, but they are absolutely horrible at sending out major OTA updates in a timely manner.
Cliq: Almost a year
Slide: Nope
G2: N/A
Mytouch 4G: N/A
Mytouch 3G: Over a year
G1: Nope
Vibrant: Nope (the latest leak is probably the final build, though)
Mytouch 3G 3mm/Fender: Nope (last I heard, at least)

Agreed.
I'm not trying to dash anyones hopes here, CM development activity was probably continue until it cannot without a newer kernel to base on, but the MTS community is small and is getting smaller. It has been an amazing trip, and I think we can all say we have met some awesome people here, but the Slide was essentially dead-on-arrival.
Two things, CM development is still going strong. He said he's got the .32 kernel booting just not with wifi (or wifi calling not sure which) so that's not really an issue at the moment and it should show up pretty soon. Also the MT3G fender has a 2.2 update, or at least a version. I helped someone with one put froyo on it so it might just be a bit of a tweaked port but I think it's official. He wasn't rooted and he didnt get a signature issue so thats what I'm basing my guess on.
After receiving the fascinate on release day, I, along with all of you have been waiting patiently (ahem) for the Froyo drop. After watching these forums and trying to learn all I could, I tried every combination that has been modded or developed here to help satisfy the need for something better than stock. I wanted to thank all of you who have been working on different things to help make this phone better in the absence of OEM support. A lot of the things delivered did make the phone better, but I always kept having to load another work around to do something I was used to doing on my old droid 2. Today, after playing with a Droid X, I decided to go ahead and dump the fascinate in favor of the X. Perhaps a mistake, but for now, I don't think so....my empty anticipation has dissipated until I start wanting gingerbread on the X. From all of my hours of watching, reading and learning from you all, it seems like the support is just there from Moto and I've never felt that from Samsung. If things work out like they normally do for me, you should be getting Froyo tomorrow thanks to me getting rid of mine. This is my first post in XDA, as I usually spend my time searching and reading to learn from the experts and I wanted to take the chance to say thank you before I start spending my time in the droid threads.
paid full price for a dx??
Okay?
It'll probably be out soon you know.. lots of Galaxy S phones are getting one way or another now. Were bound to get an official release soon. Good luck with the DX.
As for paying full price.. I paid retail for my Fascinate. I had an OG Droid prior. I plan on purchasing all my phones straight up from here on out. Screw contracts..

Hate to see you go. But thanks for the good wishes.

I played with both the Fascinate and the Incredible while at best buy. The Fascinate just felt like a better phone to me when using both. I'm happy with my purchase. The Incredible is a great phone though, great dev community. Enjoy your phone!
The Incredible is a fantastic phone, with one fatal flaw: its absolutely terrible GPU. I had one after owning the Droid 1, right before the Fascinate came out, and while it was tempting to switch to the Fascinate in general once they announced its release date was inside my 30-day return period (better hardware specs all-around), the graphics performance was what absolutely cinched it.
I remember trying to run on the Incredible... I think it was Asphalt 5 (though this goes for plenty of other 3D-intensive games I can't specifically remember) and it was like playing a slideshow most of the time.
Meanwhile, the Droid 1, despite its almost half-speed CPU compared to the Incredible, was able to smoothly run any game I threw at it.
not me.
Not me,
I got the Fascinate for it's hardware....
When we do get Froyo, that will just add to it's goodness!!!

Same here, the incredible was an option, but it is basically a redone droid eris. While decently powerful the fascinate was the better choice, even with 2.1.

I totally respect your decision, but I imagine it will be one you regret. I think people forget that we have only been waiting for Froyo a little more than three months. The droid x waited this long also. Other phones have waited much longer for promised updates.
Btw: As someone already pointed out, you call a locked bootloader better support?

Lol you impatient people.... i had froyo on my d1 as soon as it was ported. It wasn't that amazing. Good luck to you all

I second this. I got my Fascinate from Craigslist and will never again buy a phone on contract.
As far as Froyo, if the update is half-assed (Droid Eris style), I'll be installing a nice clean Froyo rom the friendly neighborhood developers again.
The Froyo upgrade for the Droid 1 was actually pretty amazing performance-wise, but that's neither here nor there.
And the Droid X took a bit over two months to get Froyo. We've already been waiting three and a half months.
So while the Fascinate is a great phone as-is, from an objective point of view, the upgrade wait is unjustified and I feel buyers have every right to be disappointed -- especially when the manufacturer just launched a phone running 2.3.
I think the incredible is just a tad more than a re done fascinate. That's a little bit of a understatement. The dev community is flying on that phone.
Edit: flacyn. You are exactly right. I will agree locked bootloader doesn't mean no support. Just no support from modders. And launching a gingerbread phone while your flagship line sits on eclair is dissapointing.

Ill give u $50 4 ur fascinate since u dont want it.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I'll go as high as $51 because it doesn't have froyo.
good day.
me personally i dont plan on playing many games on this things other than like angry birds.. so the only hardware thats appealing is the screen...
I meant to say the incredible is a tad bit more than a re done Eris. Lol my bad.

That the HTC Hero developing its pretty much dead?
The best devs are gone, the ROMs don't get updated as much as before.
what are your thoughts?
im gonna agree.. I moved on last dec with the dinc.. ( which is now on metropcs ) but I still have my hero.. mostly using it as a remote to my xbmc in the bedroom. etc.. gave my spare hero to my daughter for games and music til she dropped it.lmao.
Probably. Couple weeks ya got the Nexus S 4g, couple months the Evolution 3d and the Evo tablet. Epic has been out for a while. All are good phones. I think most will upgrade.
I have been running aosp 3/26 build with no issues. I think I've hit a comfort zone. I haven't flashed in so long. Getting the dt's I have my Nexus s on preorder. I've already called Sprint and received my full upgrade by threatening to switch carriers. So now its just a waiting game.

Compared to what it was, yes, but there is still Gingerbread deving going on...CyanogenMod and aosp's builds are still being developed. There's still a kernel that Deca and s0be are doing. While it's true there may be less variations, but the big players are still in play. I'd rather have better quality than more of a selection.
Yeah i myself bought an Evo...actually it's my 3rd Evo ha ha....
when the Evo 1st came out, i bought one ..but sold it because I don't see the point of having an Evo in a city where I don't get 4G at all....I have to travel 30 mins to even use 4G....
So I sold it, used my Hero again..got tired of the Hero and bought my friends Evo that he didn't want for 100 dollars .....Sold that Evo to my sister..back to the Hero..
and Now I'm back to the Evo again but keeping the Hero around just in case my Evo breaks ...

Absolutely not! There's still so much more to do.
The CyanogenMod Heroc base still has a long way to go. It still ships with a 2.6.29 Linux kernel. It also ships with a bunch of proprietary files that are begging to be reverse-engineered. And the ones that have been (like libcamera) have a LONG way to go.
The 2.6.35 kernel is nearly stable for our devices, and once that's done I'm sure someone (perhaps yours truly) will work on porting a newer one. This should be exciting because Android additions were finally merged into the mainline kernel tree.
The other big thing for us is going to be replacing more proprietary libraries with source code. I'm personally planning to bring libcamera up in quality for the CM7.1 release. And it's about time for someone to start working on the OpenGL libs.
And there are always going to be more versions of Android in the future to port. And there are always going to be incremental performance tweaks.

Yea what he said.
Yea its Me Again With The
Modified Hero
I am going to keep my Hero until ether it dies and I can not rebuild it or Sprint drops the $10 fee that would bring me nothing but a lighter wallet.
I have 4 smart phone users in my house. 3 have Heroes and one has an LG Optimus we are all under the 2 year mark. I was going to upgrade under the Sprint Premier plan, but they changed that as well, so As long as it works my Hero well be with me.
So I hope the development on the Hero continues well into the future.
I am actually pretty amazed that there is as much going on with the Hero as there is. This phone is 1 1/2 years old definitely behind the curve in regards to hardware so it is pretty nice to see how many people are still working on it. I do think it will become very quite once the EVO 3D drops but even then I would imagine there will be people keeping this thing updated.
I plan on getting the EVO 3D (it is that or the Pre 3) but I am questioning whether to keep this phone anyway. With the WiFi I should still be able to do get games and such so it could be a useful item to take on my bike or around work.
I plan on the nexus s but will keep hero running also as this little device is still getting a lot of attention. If only we can have a graphics processor and a 3.7 screen size it would be the best device to have.
