This right here has changed my mind as I was still middle of the road about getting it after yesterday's reviews.
Basically what is going on is what happened to the hero. A 1.5 mashup with cdma support that caused us to basically be incompatible with other roms for a long time untill aosp 1.6 and 2.1 builds came out. 1.5 not having support for cdma technology. The linked article states that 2.1 R2 does not have 4g support as of yet. This isn't a game stopper, in my belief, and will probally run 2.1 just fine under 3g, but I'm not taking the chance of the problem running deeper for the simple fact of that, I really like my cross platform development. With a custom 2.1 release will probably come a non-standard kernel version as well. And potential lack of being able to root right out of the box. It might also lack ports of other android devices until some official build higher than 2.1 comes out.
Not attempting to discourage anyone here from going to the evo, just trying to inform the uninformed of potential downsides. I'm personally going to the nexus, regardless of that sexy big screen and kickstand *sigh*
Thanks,
-Grant
says the devs are working hard on support for 4g though. As much hype that it has generated already, I have no doubt that devs will have everything compatible within a very short time period.
I don't see it taking too long for Google to release an Android Froyo with built in WiMAX support, especially since it's coming out over the Summer. As far as how long it's going to take HTC/Sprint to release it... Well us Hero users can vouch for them not having very timely releases. (kernel source anyone?)
I'm sure sprint and google will have it working... no doubt... but making the same changes to what's out there right now... or what comes in the near future... might be a challange for xda developers not sprint ones.
i thin it will be fine. its advertised as the first 4g phone in america and its not coming out until summer. thats a long time in cell phone years
Agreed. I guess the hope is just that the 4G compatibility trickles in from Google and not from HTC.

Mild fail, i'd say. You haven't even deterred me an ounce from not molesting this phone at launch. Nothing you mentioned is a potential downside when the fixes will be done by summer's launch. Why don't we actually get the device in hand first, start hacking away and then proclaim all the doom we want, eh?? It's still at least ~3 months away.

mild fail? I said I'm not trying to detour anyone. If you want to get one... then be my guest, in fact, it looks like the best android phone to date. *I* am just not getting one, and was letting whoever cared to know, why I wasn't.
I'm not sure how you are interpreting what I wrote, but I'm going to try to lay it as flat on the table as possible.
-All the roms floating around on xda right now may not be fully functional with the EVO.
-root may not be possible out of the box, or for a long time, or even at all.
-custom build for the wimax code may be proprietary and might not ever get merged with AOSP.
-updates to the next version of android will depend totally on sprint and htc.
-android, senceUI, and wimax will work fine right out of the box I am sure of it.
that is all I'm saying, you are acting like I'm attacking the EVO, I am absolutely not. I was probably going to get one until I read that article, and the points I made are why. These are my personal beliefs after seeing what has happened with sprint and android up until this point, take it however you want, but please take with a grain of salt, any one or all the points I made may not end up being true.
That is all.
Early adopters of any new technology will always face mild setbacks like these.
So long as someone can figure out stealth tethering, I don't think people will be going nuts having to wait for a custom rom.
I still really want one, but I'm going to use my TP2 on sprint for as long as I can until I get bored with it, and too upset with people stopping development on wm6+ apps simply because wm7 was announced.

tethering is a native feature of the phone, and there's no limit on data usage... so i don't know what you're worried about.

it comes on other sprint android phones out of the box as well, but you have to pay for the tethering access for it to work. There's actually 2 accounts in your radio programming on your phone, one for normal data, one for shared, the second doesn't work unless sprint enables it. The wifi tethering hack just pushes both accesses through the same account.
I can see why he would be concerned

I'm definitely not going the *official* tethering route. It's data that i'm already paying for and shouldn't matter which pipe it's coming out of as long as i'm within my cap.
Case in point, on my Treo Pro, with all the tethering i do via wifirouter i still come out less than 5gb/month.
PDANet, i'm looking at you come summer time.

Not that the whole 5gb thing matters, as there isn't a cap on cell usage. Only airCards / the overdrive have a 5gb cap on them. The cell plans still don't.

this might be a valid point if The evo 4g wasn't shipping with android 2.2 Froyo, which will most likely support these things *fingers crossed tho*
This is idiotic. There already is 4G support in android as evidenced by the EVO it's self and root will happen no matter what. I have no doubt that it will be running Froyo when it comes out so "other" roms won't really matter and who would want to run "other" roms when you have a Froyo base running the latest Sense UI on a HDMI streaming Snapdragon Beast. Maybe I missed the whole point of this thread but finding potential problems on a product thats not even going to be released for another couple months at the least is quite annoying. I'll be getting one if Sprint doesn't one up it's self with something better before then.
Oh by the way HTC broke compatibility with 2.1 Hero and AOSP with their 2.6.29 kernel by using their own non standard power management in kernel. This is the only flaw I can see that would validate this thread and thats if this new power management makes it into the EVO and if and when they release the kernel source. Time will tell. Not random guessing and random andorid "news".

This is funny. The EVO is what it is, and will be what it will be, once it is released. Even at that time, it won't matter which one of you is right, simply because... well, it doesn't matter.
Guys, i might not be a active poster in this forum, but i am an active reader [100+ hits per day minimum]. Being a n00b in android developement, it might sound kinda funny. But WHAT ARE THE DEVS DOING! HAVE THEY MOVED TO ANOTHER DEVICE? I dont think its already time for the myTouch slide to be outdated. It has a 600 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM and other specs that are not outdated yet. Companies are still releasing phones having less specs than this. I see other phone's forums full of roms, kernels and other stuff. But i have been watching myTouch slide developement forum from few days, but there have been no posts at all, not even a clue of what the developers are doing. I didn't mean to be rude, but just wanted to say that MYTOUCH SLIDE IS NOT DEAD YET! And i want to thanks all the devs for all the ROMS and mods for mytouch. I appreciate your work eugene_373, wesgarner , kingofyo1 etc. [dont mind if i didnt include your name....this goes to all the devs]. Guys i appreciate your work, but we should not let the mytouch slide to die.
P.S. i am willing to offer some disk space from my vps for android community. If any devs want to host their roms or other stuff there, please contact me.
Cheers !

By no means is it dead.
Dragons lie still in deathlike slumber until awakened to unleash their powerful presence upon the world of mortals yet again...aka no the slide isn't dead . Development has slowed a bit but that's mainly because there are a few key ROMs out that are being focused on. I'd rather have a selection of 3 or 4 good ROMs than dozens of crappy ones wouldn't you?
Edit: You might also want to change the title to "Is the myTouch Slide dead?" so people don't come here expecting to flame and mods don't move it without reading.
yea true...it is better to have few good roms than many bad....but it is even getting difficult to find few good roms, the only good one i have found is cyanogenmod. I will try ararays once it comes out.i hope it is great.

The MTS is pretty much dead outside of CM6 development, T-Mobile pretty much abandoned their Espresso 2.2 plans and not a whole lot of people purchased the Slide. Most who did traded it away for the HD2 or Vibrant.
What makes you say that? They never set a date to when they would release it... We really dont need anything from official froyo, besides wifi calling
thanks for the reply r0man, but in my view it is not dead yet, but i think that some developers are dead [no offence]. and arayray, can i give a suggestion for your new mod, i got the beta build somehow, everything is perfect [i think it is almost as stable as cyanogenmod]. But i think it lacks flash player. I know that every rom out there lacks it. But i have found a way to add the flash player in stock rom. Yes, but only thing needed is that we need to be able to use the sense's browser in our roms. then i have a flash apk file that is supported by the sense browser. a long time ago i had found a rom somewhere in the wild with a sense browser in stock android, and i tried the apk there, and it worked perfectly. please reply so that we can talk about this. i will be more than happy to help. and i can provide you the flash file. and i think the boot animation is a bit laggy. can you please fix it? everything else is AWESOME~!

The myTouch 3G Slide software (Espresso) framework was completely ready for deployment in March of 2009. The fact that the device took yet another entire year to be released tells me that it is the red-headed step-child of T-Mobile and SHOULD have come out in 2009, NOT mid-2010. They will not release Froyo - all of you optimistic thinkers will continue to deny this and hope for the best, but the reality is that it was a failed device before it was even released.

T-Mo announced a month or 2 ago that the Froyo2Slide OTA will be out in December. I'm guessing next week.
It can't be dead if roms are still being developed on it.
daniel, arayray, joker, others (you know who you are).....
are doing the same thing as other devs are doing on other phones.
And it's definitely much more alive than it was a couple months ago.
Froyo/Sense hybrid + some cool features...... = definitely not dead.
A big thanks to the devs/modders.
Until CM other Modders/Devs dont produce any roms then its dead. How would you consider this phone dead when you have CM support and a nightly everyday or so. This phone isnt dead

Not saying it absolutely won't happen, but I'll believe it when I see it.
The development for the Slide is much much slower yes, and I am definitely not a fan of the lack of kernel development for this phone. Most of the sense roms look and feel the same, in my opinion. None of the froyo sense ports work too well, most of them either kb lights or wifi is broken. The eclair ports are pretty good, but I still prefer cr_mod. Cm6 is fairly active, but honestly, it's kind of a boring ROM. It's great and fast, but when I had my g1 I loved more the ROMs that were cm roms, plus awesome theming and the devs own twists and performance tweaks. Why don't we have more of that? We have some themed cm6 roms from miguel and one other I am blanking out on, but they are based off of nightlies, most from october or earlier, before many issues were fixed or improvements made.
Honestly, it'd be cooler to have more than just cyanogenmod and sense roms, which is why I'm excited for arayraymod, but where I'd really like to see a development boost is in the kernel area. I'm stable to 844mhz, pretty good. But our kernel from dumfuq lacks things like the brainfuck scheduler, I think it's called at least, and of course, smartass cpu governor. If we see anything I would like to see smartass incorporated. At least an undervolt?
I know, I'm digressing, this isn't a request thread by any means. The Slide isn't dead I don't think but sometimes I can't help but compare our forums to pretty much any other android phone and see how our development is depressingly slow. At least it isn't totally dead yet. If that tmo froyo ota really does come out then it may give a needed boost, hopefully at least.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
http://androidforums.com/t-mobile-mytouch-slide/203166-i-got-2-2-t-mo-thread.html
The thread starts off as your typical useless thread, but the more you read, the more possible it is that Froyo will be released. There are some independent accounts of what HTC and/or T-Mo said, but I'll say this now: if it doesn't come out by the end of December then it aint ever coming out.
I still think my previous statements about the Slide being heavily delayed and otherwise a failure (to T-Mo), are true. We'll see if T-Mo wants to hold up their end of the bargain on Froyo, however.
I think I'm up for a full upgrade in the next couple months. Come March, I'm planning on selling the Slide and getting something more top-of-the-line. I originally went with this phone because of the keyboard, but after having Swype and SwiftKey for a while, there's just no need. We got my wife a 4G yesterday and it's pretty sexy.

Flash: You are using the Flash Lite plugin that came with stock Espresso, most likely, as Flash 10.1 with hardware acceleration requires an ARMv7 processor where the Slide possesses an ARMv6.
Bootanimation: Change the speed in desc.txt.

Well, Motorola had already done the majority of the work involved in porting 2.1 to the Cliq before T-Mobile started dropping high-end phones. It would've be cost ineffective of them to just drop the project all together. I will bet you almost anything that the Cliq will not receive an official 2.2 OTA (even though there are some alpha unofficial ports).

I'm not trying to dash anyones hopes here, CM development activity was probably continue until it cannot without a newer kernel to base on, but the MTS community is small and is getting smaller. It has been an amazing trip, and I think we can all say we have met some awesome people here, but the Slide was essentially dead-on-arrival.
Two things, CM development is still going strong. He said he's got the .32 kernel booting just not with wifi (or wifi calling not sure which) so that's not really an issue at the moment and it should show up pretty soon. Also the MT3G fender has a 2.2 update, or at least a version. I helped someone with one put froyo on it so it might just be a bit of a tweaked port but I think it's official. He wasn't rooted and he didnt get a signature issue so thats what I'm basing my guess on.
Well it seems not a lot is going on in the development thread anymore. Not much really new. It'll prob pick up after GB officially releases or another HC SDK is released with more features.
The odd thing is that I was thinking the exact opposite. A while back I was on warm rls2 and not finding the desire to flash. Now im flashing 3 times a week. Between the cm7 gingerbread combo, miuiu, elite, warm, ava, milk froyo, the desire hd rims, liquid... its a party.
I would have to agree with the above post... Despite the fact that I stick to CM7, when I browse the development section there are numerous updated roms. I was actually taking back by the comment that you feel there is a "standstill". If you only stick to sense then there not be much going on, But in the ASOP world there is plenty going on.

as others have stated, CM7 GB nightlies, new MIUI, Wimax on CM, Full HDMI out port, JsChiSurf porting all kinds of stuff from CM into Sense, and the list could go on forever...
The sense based ROMs won't be updated until the next OTA/leak from HTC, however, there is a lot going on for the EVO.
I just got WiMax so I haven't tried out CM7 or the AOSP WiMax beta, once they are stable, I might make the AOSP jump permanetly.

if this is a standstill....how would you describe the epic development ???

this thread is beyond rediculous
I agree with the above post.
Yeah, what exactly was this thread supposed to accomplish??
it has to do with acceleration, the dev thread has been accelerating so fast that it has reached a peak, there is tons of new so it's not that it's stale but rather theres not even more new stuff.
months ago there was a new thing every day, then there were 2, then 3, now theres still 3 new everyday but no 4 new or 5 new
Between the development standstill and the Gingerbread setback, it's amazing people are still hanging around here.
I would not say stand still, things are pretty much refined nowadays. as for CM7 we are waiting for an offical update for the nexus one then that will be become stable and have good drivers written for it.

where else would we go except to the nexus s. only phone with 2.3,
I will welcome the day when development is actually at a standstill, because most likely it'll be when the evo is close enough to being "done"
I love tweaking my phone as much as the next nightly romfiend, but its nice when i can just use my device. I had a great time when i was using CM6.1.2 w/ wimax since that implementation was only on one build and so i couldn't flash nightlies. I am now having the same great time on CM7 wimax.
Its nice to just use my phone, and people can call me now and i won't be in recovery when they do, WOOT!
I too wish recovery had a dailer, I might actually use it as a phone instead of a small tablet with unlimited internet

How significant are the nightly updates on CM? I just got a new replacement in today and I might consider trying it out (currently on Fresh on my current phone).
Call me crazy, but I feel a lot of the CM updates are stuff we've had with Sense a while back.
the nightlys you don't have to constantly update when a new one comes out, grab the newest and when you feel the urge to update then go for it, its mostly perfected

I probably will too.
Hi Have a look at the CM7 forum
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/forum-0/announcement-16-hero-gsm-cm-7/
I would like to offer an Official status report on CM7 (Android 2.3) and CM support for the Hero GSM.
As many of you know, Lox stepped away as CM Maintainer for your device sometime in January. Since then, we have continued to issue Nightlies, Betas and one ill-gotten stable build (which was subsequently pulled); all without an active maintainer dedicated to the Hero GSM.
The team has come to the conclusion, that this is just not a sustainable and viable endeavor. With no active developer looking out for the GSM variant, items like that nasty memory leak sneak their way in. Additionally, it would seem that those in the Android community that do work on the CM source, and publish their own ROMS, are not contributing their fixes back to the CM source.
Having a broken base serve as a stepping stone for closed fixed versions doesn't work for us, and is against our aims with CM.
This decision is not irreversible, we simply would require commitment from a capable developer to maintain and manage the Hero vendor. Till that point, CM support for Hero GSM is hereby discontinued.

I think its fair Enough and I personally still appreciate there are still Dev's like Elelinux, erasmux and others who are still helping around to keep us happy with their lovely roms and kernels the time has come to move on
My contract is coming to an end in a couple of months and have already put my beloved hero on ebay.
Looking to go with with either the Samsung galaxy S2 or HTC Sensation as they have 1 GB Ram compared to LG's Offerings and the Motorola Atrix has too many expensive Accessories which I have no intresest
What do you guys think ?
Same with me
Really thanks to all developers especially erasmux, ninpo, pulser,Villain Team....
Because of you i still have my old good Hero. Cheers
I ordered new Samsung GS2 and I think I'm going to miss some of you crazy dev guys. The Hero was very great phone but his time is running out. Too often I feel the lack of power, camera...
At least if you get bored with your Hero, you could always just flash it with one of the many existing ROMs.
I'm in the same boat as most of you. Nearing upgrade renewal period and looking at the Sensation, GS2 maybe the Atrix and whatever else that comes out. My Hero screen stopped responding so I got a Blade for the time being. I'd like to thank all the developers for their ROM's and the community. I will miss the Hero once it's gone.
Just like reiterate what everyone else is saying. Shame that there isn't an active dev working with the CM team for our Hero.
Have a few months before upgrade time. Would love to go for the SGS II or one of the newer HTC phones (Incredible or maybe Desire S if I had to). I like the sound of the Atrix, but need to look at it in the flesh first. Loved my Razr when I had it, but later phones didn't appeal from Motorola.
Hopefully we will see some new stuff from Erasmux soon. Have tried VR13 and had been running Elelinux 7, but always go back to Floyo for speed and reliability.
Thanks to all the devs past and present.
This isn't an obituary for the Hero, just thought I would pass on my thanks before any more jump ship.
In december of this year my hero will become 2 years old and i think i'll get a new phone then. But i have to say that the hero was my best choice for a mobilephone till now. And i still think its very useable and it just makes fun to see that there are many more people who see this just like me. i'll miss my hero :*(
I've still got 10 months left before an upgrade
Luckily though my GF is going to get a SGS2 on contract and swap me, I'm going to wait till the sensation is released and the networks offer better deals for it.
Thanks to the devs who have been and gone and still remain, each and everyone has made the hero what it is today. It's a shame, but all good things has to come to an end.
Too many devs to mention but thank you all!!
The SGS2 looks quality, it got an excellent review too. I found it on a 12 Month contract albeit with £300 for the phone upfront but the contract is only £20 so it's equivalent to the phone itself on Pay as you Go. I'm quite interested in the Sensation too, I hope the bootloader or whatever is unlocked by someone.
Call me a traitor but Windows Phone is compelling as well. The Dell Venue Pro is chunky but I like it.
I still have many months before my contract will expire, but I am thinking to buy a new phone anyway..
The Hero was my first smartphone and thanks to him I am in love with Android now..
Thanks for everything Hero..
Do not give up, there is a hope. After all, there are no serious problem with CM7 on hero, except for that invisible menus bug, which affects lots of other devices, too. There might be some people, who can take LoxDev's place.
VillainRom just tweeted that they have managed to fix some of the mess of cyanmod so there might be something coming from Villain Rom
Despite having had a new phone for a few months now, I just can't bring myself to sell my hero - just like my old Motorola startac (showing my age now) I think it will remain firmly in my possession for a while yet.

With less and less devs working on the Evo 4G nowadays, I ask, is Evo 4G officially being forced to retire? I myself even went to check on upgrading to the 3VO. It's no fun without any new Roms to play with. Being a flashoholic, I'm suffering from withdrawal, and it's hard to deal with.
What exactly leads you to say that devs are no longer supporting the EVO 4G? The development forum seems as hopping as ever to me.

Check out the latest updates. I've seen only two in the last few days. Look at the 3D forum, it's on fire.

Newer devices are going to have more support than older.
However, it's also true that the source code for Gingerbread for the Evo was only released a few days ago.
This Guy must have missed the development thread....

I don’t know, it looks like we shall be set free, in good time but in a "registered" kind of way. At least that is what I am getting from 3D forums and the f+Bk page.
I could be wrong about all of this, but to me, the writing is on the wall. I really feel the demise of EVO 4G, as far as development standpoint. The latest talks is that most of the devs are jumping ship. I mean, can you really blame them. Great phone that has been improved. I've even seen what could be called a collection plates to get certain devs 3VOs. No disrespect to anyone doing. Hard/good work should not go without its just reward.
I think there just isn't anything new really other then kernels no new OS atm to play we have sense up to 3.0 and why port much much more? I do see improvments in each ROM though just slower EVO 3d is hoping cause they don't have anything

Yeah, it is important to understand that the big rush in the beginning is:
1) Get root
2) Wait for Source code
3) Fix **** ups from the manufacturer
4) Make modifications [possibly from other devices] to improve Android overall.
It's been over a year, all that's been done. While improvements are still coming constantly...the bulk of that work for the Evo is, well, done.

I have to agree here. I think a lot of people have gotten into the habit of changing ROMs on a way too frequent basis, to the point where they're switching weekly with 4-6 Nandroid backups of different ROMs so they can jump around as much as they want.
That list above is the true goal of Android development. If I find a good ROM, and there's relatively little bugs (especially less than stock), looks great, gives me something flashy (like Sense 3.0) I can be satisfied for months at a time, not even updating most of that time.
Unless there is something that has yet to be perfected on the EVO, development could halt right now and it wouldn't hurt what we already have. Look at all the things that's been done for the EVO since release:
Wireless N
HDMI-to-TV mirroring
Hacked hotspot
Notification bar power controls
4G on CM7
Hacked Hulu (which is now pointless, but eh)
...and more I just can't remember right now because I haven't had my morning coffee yet. The EVO has actually evolved (no pun intended) over the last year and 2 months, and like any piece of hardware, we're going to reach the limits. But the EVO has shaped the future of Android forever, and that's what we need to remember most.
Our community has created some of the most amazing pieces of code Android has ever seen, and that will only get better with the 3D. Time to move on...if I had the money, I'd get the 3D too, but that's just because I can't root my replacement EVO...

That is my point. We have reached the pinnacle, when it comes to development for the EVO. As a dev, why wouldn't you feel it's time to move on? Their work here is done. The writing is on the wall guys. The most they can do is make minor mods here. The next challenge is 3VO or some other device. I will not mention those other devices by name, I am EVO.
I think there's a huge difference between "end of dev cycle" and "device is on last breath".
Is your evo having any problems running anything? Are you not on the latest android 2.3.5?
CM still has nightlies, miui still has weeklies, only thing really slower is sense and the only one to blame there is htc (and possibly yourself for wasting your time with sense).

I completely agree here. My EVO is doing everything I could possibly want! We "may" be seeing the end of OS development for this phone, but now their concentrating on kernels now that the source has been out for a couple of weeks.
I think saying last breath is alittle strong. As far as anything else that can be developed rom-wise maybe. This is still going to be a serviceable phone for quite some time. If you are a person with flash issues you might have a problem. To me once kernels get perfected you shouldn't have to flash like a maniac anyway. Honestly I think the only other thing to perfect now is hdmi and personally I could care less but that's just me. I'm going 3d later this month and the Mrs gets my OG EVO. For her this will be a beast of a phone. Writing on the wall yes, last breath, far from it.
Peace

I do not believe this statement is too strong at all. Technology moves at a very rapid pace. Once something hits the shelves it's already old technology. Lets take the iPad (yes, I dare to mention this) for example. This was once a revolutionary product, except now, we have the Tablet, the Eee Pad, the iPad2, etc. You yourself even call it by the name OG EVO, which usually signifies something old. So yes, SIR, I do dare say that the EVO is on its last breath.
P.S Trade-in your EVO for a $125 credit toward the 3VO
I guess we look at last breath differently. To me last breath means no more support. Apps no longer supported etc. But we are different people and view things differently.
