All the reviews are making me nervous... thank god for a return policy.
Give me a chance to root and see if I can remove all this bloatware, bing crap.
Such a pretty device too....
ya no kidding huh?
I ordered a droid x almost 2 weeks ago and have been mulling over switching to the fascinate ever since. Apparently now I'll have to wait to receive my droid x and then bring it in and return it for the fascinate. Good thing it's coming tomorrow(they told me it would ship on the 13th).
I have no idea what to do. The fascinate looks great as far as specs go. It really just depends on how the custom roms are going to run on it, because there's no way I'm sticking with bing search and maps... EVERYONE has said it but it's just retarded!
Soo... the DX's bootloader is still locked. The Fascinate is "supposedly" completely unlocked. The DX is supposed to be getting Froyo anyday now right? And who knows when the Fascinate will get it... sometime this year huh?
I'm so tired of this stinky old Touch Pro 2 that I can't even check my twitter on anymore! I'm definately leaning towards trying the Fascinate. And I will DEFINATELY be rooting/hacking/overclocking to the fullest of it's capabilities. Sorry for going on.. I've had smartphones on my brain for the last week. At least most of ya'll understand what I'm going through.
Just one week? I have been thinking about Fascinate for months (ever since it was announced)
I knew Bing would be default search engine but I never thought it would be the only search engine.
Here I was, getting a bit antsy thinking Google might turn evil after the net neutrality deal, but MS is still the evil lord of technology.
First of all, the reviews (Gizmodo/Engadget/Droid Life) that were written about the Fascinate were all awful. Not a single one of them did the phone any justice, nor did they cover anything except how much they hated the fact that Bing was the only search engine and that TouchWiz has a lag issues and other problems. They never said anything about the hardware being superior to any other device vzw offers. There is no doubt that TouchWiz needs improving and that having only Bing is stupid. However this phone is awesome. The cpu/gpu/screen are all much better than the Droid X and the Droid 2 and the Droid Incredible. Once this thing is rooted and the ROMs start coming, it will be the king.

I'm pretty sure you were trolling though.
Actually I wasn't. What you pasted is literally about all they wrote. They seem like they are trying to prove a point that they hate what they did with Bing, so you shouldn't buy the phone. I think Gizmodo went as far as saying if you want a Galaxy S phone you should switch carriers...
I just think the reviews were all terribly ignorant, and not really fair compared to some of the other reviews i've seen them do. I don't even know how you can compare this phone to a Droid Incredible at this point, it's far superior in every category with the exception that Sense UI is likely a bit better than TouchWiz.
This is one of my favorites:
"Camera: This actually started out in the “Good” section and as I continued through the review, it had to be moved. 5MP? Really? The picture quality of shots taken with the camera aren’t bad at all, but with the Incredible and Droid X both sporting 8MP beasts, you’ve got to come strong."
This guy is clearly clueless, and what he says makes no sense at all.

lol, what a joke.
It's not trolling to say that the reviews aren't good. If he was trolling it would make more sense for him to be mocking the phone and saying it sucks. Instead he's saying the phone will likely be very popular even with all of the bad reviews.
Either way, imo the only good review is slash gear's b/c they gave a thorough in-depth review. Not a "lightning" review, not a quick overview, but a REAL review.
Now, let's get this back on topic.
I am not trusting any of the reviews at this point. I'll be picking up my fascinate tomorrow and I have high hopes and expectations.

I wonder if they said the same thing when they were giving glowing reviews to the iPhone 4. After all, it ONLY packs a 5mp camera as well. What a crock these people all are.

This phone is only better by its screen type & gpu, both phones straight out the box, the droid x performance a hella alot better then the fascinate in some good ol benchmark test such as quadrant, its true it performance better at gpu benchmark of course because of the updated gpu inside it; but IMO Droid X is still better.

Galaxy S phones stumble during the I/O test in Quadrant. People created a patch for it and the phone scores well above anything else.

lol, I'm with ya there. I just wish I didn't have to wait till after work.
I don't post here much, but I bought into the BOGO fascinate deal yesterday. I have been a WM nerd for years and was waiting for some decent WP7 devices before I upgraded from my TP2. I'm stuck on verizon, and it looks like there are no noteworthy WP7 launch devices. I also work for verizon, so I get an upgrade every 10 months. Figured I'd take a chance withandroid for the next 10 months to try the whole shebang.
Being a geek, I took one look at the specs and was impressed.
First: This is XDA. What does all this bing/touchwiz nonsense mean to us? The FIRST thing I do with any smartphone I get is root! Aren't the CNET/Amazon review boards for the people who can't get over these tiny carrier-specific idiosyncracies?
I keep reading the reviews as well--and most importantly the reviews in the user-submitted sections. The phone is getting absolutely flamed by people who don't even own it yet feel the need to rank it at a "1" on all levels because of Bing. Seriously?
I'm not worried about a thing. Once this phone is rooted, and I'm sure it won't take long, it's going to be a beast.
I got my fascinate this morning and it is a thing of beauty.
Unfortunately, I can use it yet. Verizon billing system is having issues in the Midwest and cant activate me yet. Atleast that's what their telling me.
But i'm having fun moving the puzzle piece around, haven't seen the word "BING" yet.

Droid X doesn't even have a Snapdragon processor, its OMAP, there's a difference...
The point im making is that straight out of the box Droid X is clearly the winner of any phone out there but its ui, sure the samsumg probably have more result once its rooted, thats with any smartphone, kinda worry's me some of these people even come ova to xda...
The Fascinate felt a whole lot snappier and smooth to me vs the DROID X/2. I'm having a tough time deciding which to go with.
I work in a vzw call center. Droid x's everywhere. After playing with my fascinate, 2 coworkers are returning their X's for the fascinate. Rarely have I seen a device this well done.

+1, I too have returned my X for the Fascinate. My main gripe with the X was the hardware buttons (I just didn't like them personally). But after seeing the performance of the Fascinate I was sold (and it has haptic buttons .
Anyone else think that the Nexus S is kind of a disappointment?
There's nothing revolutionary or really exciting about it. It's specs sound like it's just another Galaxy S device. No dual core, no HSDPA+, nada.
Now, to be clear, I'm talking just about the device itself. Not Gingerbread. Gingerbread looks hot. Curious to hear what you folks think about the device.
No sd card slot but has a 16 gig storage. I guessing Google corrected the available memory issue with 2. 3
I think it to early to draw up any conclusions with what we have on hand.

It's a Samsung which for me, after my experience with the Vibrant, equals 'never again'.
If anything I do hope that the Nexus S, by extension, will provide some much needed relief to those who are sticking it out with their Vibrants, etc.
Just my take, I'm not a phone buff or geek, I just want my device to work properly, which is why I switched to the G2.
I've had a vibrant. Felt too cheap to me. Sad part it wasn't cheap. Paid 500 for it. The lack of support and gps issue is what turned me away. It was a nice phone. Just not my style. As I'm sure just by looking at the nexsus s, they will have the same issues. But I could be wrong. Maybe google will put a flame under samsungs butt and make them correct their errors in a fast manner.

That simple little statement is what made me turn my head. I love Google, and I think them working to make a phone with a company means it will be a good phone. I believe Samsung will get more respect from this phone, but Samsung's plastic has always stood out and this phone looks like it has just as much as any other Samsung phone. It has decent specs, nothing groundbreaking by any means, but just as nice as any other smart phone out now.
Remind me, wasn't the N1 the first phone to have a 1GHz processor? At least one of the first? I figured Google's second phone would be VERY top of the line instead of average.

Yeeeep. It was the very first. Big reason I dumped my Droid for the Nexus One way back when. That and I didn't like Verizon's service.
That's part of the reason I was so disappointed with the specs on the Nexus S. Nothing revolutionary again. Just another Galaxy S.
If I were holding out for the Nexus S, then yes, I would be disappointed. But I wasn't since I'm still in love with my G2. Can't believe Google would let this thing go to T-Mobile USA with those specs. Not dual core, no HSPA+, less ram than the MyTouch, less screen than the HD7, no hdmi out, not even a kickstand? Can a brother get a kickstand? And this is supposed to be the flagship Android phone? Ha, it won't even be the best phone at T-Mobile.

Indeed. Great show. Kids these days don't know what they're missing.
long story short, its a disappointment.
TBH, the only thing I am actually DISAPOINTED with is the lack of an Orion processor... rumor had it that it was delayed because of that issue! What is gonna happen is in 2 months all the tegra 2 devices are gonna start showing up and your "Flagship" device is already sub-par/obsolete

just in time for a Nexus 2 ...
new **** happens. there's money to be made beforehand.
Sooo disappointed
First of all, I love my N1 and sorry for the long post but i have to vent.
I bought a Nexus One in February when it came for T-mobile only and then gave it away to my brother in law who had T-Mobile when the AT&T N1 came out and bought that. My contract with AT&T has been up for a couple of months now and i was really hoping for a device (from google) that would be better than the N1 (for future proofing for at least 6 months).
Well this device is better than the N1 but not enough to ditch the N1 and get this. Here are the reasons:
Biggest disappointment: Only a 5 MP camera still? Come on Google? The EVO has an 8MP camera and has been out for months. I know phone cameras really aren't meant to replace traditional digital cameras but my sisters EVO takes pictures that are great (in the correct light) and if i had that i wouldn't even buy a new digital camera.
Second biggest disappointment: Not CDMA. I want to switch to sprint or verizon. If Google/ Samsung comes out with a CDMA version i might overlook the other disappointments and ditch the N1.
Now other reasons why Nexus S is not really that much better than the N1 to warrant another $529.
Processor: I don't know too much about the speed difference in the processors but i'm assuming they will roughly perform the same. However, i think within next couple of months new Android / Non-Android phones will come out with better processors and this will be outdated. I must add though, i haven't really seen any lag on the 1 ghz.
Video: I'm guessing the Nexus S will record 720p video, but so does my N1 (with cyanogen) and so does the EVO and many many other devices. 1080 would have been the next step and another reason i might have upgraded. Not on my top priority list though.
I don't really care that much about that NFC thing. I am curious to try it, but not enough to shell out $529 (i don't want contracts). Once more vendors support this it will become more important but not at this point.
Nexus S will probably be better for 3D gaming as the GPU on N1 supposedly sucks. I'm assuming the gingerbread advantage for 3d gaming will also be applicable to N1 but Nexus S will probably have a better GPU. I don't care about this too much because i don't play much 3d games on phones anyway but other people might weigh this more.
Yes to me its a Flopfor the the simple fact its just a google version of Galaxy S. BUT then again, after my experiance with my behold II, i will NEVER buy a samsung phone again, thats just me though... Besides my G2 is great been a while since i had a phone i was happy with.

CDMA blows
Hello everyone,
I am in a dilemma of sorts. Currently, I own the HTC Droid Eris. While I enjoyed this phone for a while, it is really starting to show its age. Currently I am running the GSB gingerbread rom, and while that made it a little more bearable, my patience for the phone is running thin. It has problems playing a lot of the games out there right now, so I am itching to get a new phone.
That said, I have an upgrade available, and I was wondering if it is worth it to get the Droid X. My girlfriend has one, and I really like that large screen of it, and it seems like it is a pretty snappy phone.
My question to you is, should I get the X? I was looking at the Incredible 2, and I like that as well. Is it better?
Or should I wait for some of the newer phones that are coming out?
Thanks in advanced! I am confused on what I should do.

Personally I would not get the DX it is reaching its EOL soon. I would get a newer phone and one with an unlocked boot loader. That being said look for a phone with the features that you prefer ie touch or hard buttons, screen size whatever you prefer.

No it doesn't. The droid bionic was going to have a dual core but it was decided not to release it. The specs of the DX2 are exactly the same as the DX, except that it has more RAM and a 2gb sdcard instead of the 16gb

Actually, they're going to release the Bionic, just not when they said they would. They're "enhancing" it and releasing it possibly this summer or fall, though they could just stick the Bionic name to the Targa we've been hearing about too.
Another note about the DX2 is that while it's specs may be pretty good, dual-core and everything, it STILL lacks one very important detail that the Bionic was slated to include...4G LTE. The DX2 is a no-go on 4G, don't ask me why. Personally, I wouldn't buy a phone these days without a 4G radio. Maybe if 1 year contracts were around I would CONSIDER it, but buying a phone now with no 4G and then having to wait 22 months before I can get another (subsidized) is just not practical.
Get any phone with a Qaulcomm CPU, it's far better than anything Motorola is selling.
I have nothing against Motorola or Samsung (Samsung CPU's are better than Motorola, but Samsung is reluctant to issue updates when bugs/issues are discovered, I don't know why).
The Qualcomm CPU's even the older ones are superior in performance even at lower clock speeds, they are doing a better job engineering than either Motorola or Samsung.
I'm stuck with a Droid X for 2 years - I'm not complaining, I didn't pay for it, it does have a very nice screen, but if I were to buy a new phone it would be one with a Qualcomm (snapdragon) CPU.
Good Luck.

I do not believe that Outlaw Biker Knew that the G2x is MUCH faster than just a dual core Motorola processor would be. It's a dual core Nvidia processor and a single core NVida is almost twice as fast as the Motorola.
My best recommendation would be an HTC phone like Thunderbolt. It's newer, 4G and very fast, or if you are trying to save $, then go with an Optimus - both are Android, the Thunderbolt costs more and the Optimus costs less, but both outperform my Droid X.
before my top device comes out, better ones are coming out or at least rumored too...i understand technology but this is too fast for me, jeez at least let me buy one first before coming out with the next better thing...

Im not sure what's worse, pantech or kyocera. I think pantech phones would be alright if the UI was better.
Faster doesn't always = better.
Pantech & TFT kinda detracted from the wow factor too.
I oddly like the name "Vega Racer". Why? I'm scared to ask myself.

The evo 3d uses the same chipset.
I said this a couple of weeks ago. By the time the 3D comes out there will be 3 or 4 more phones with better specs set to drop a couple weeks/months later. Look at the Samsung phone that just leaked on Tmobile.. the Hercules.

Your point was by the time the 3d is out, there will be faster devices out. You then referenced the Hercules, which will most likely have near same performance of the 3d, but probably borked support from Samsung.

This epic reply brought to you by none other than my roxx'd out Evo.
Correct me if I'm wrong, might be same family but isn't the 3d at 1.2 dual core?
And I totally get your point, I feel outdated just three months later. Same reason I'm holding off on a tablet...ipad is a perfect example, couple months after spending 600 or so my friend feels like an idiot just a few months later he's considering another 600 just cuz of the stupid camera...

It's not just hardware you have to look at, it's also software. I'm not a huge fan of Sense, but Sense is pretty smooth.

Get over it. Buy a phone you like, enjoy it, and get past the need for having the latest and greatest. Phone envy is a *****. Either that, or man up every 6 months and fork out the dough for the newest on the market. Technology will always be 2 steps ahead of you, that's just the way it is.

Truth.
Not sure this is exactly a new thing, across the board as a whole. Always something better around the corner. And what's there to be bothered about something being better than something you don't even own yet ... ? Whether or not it is 'entirely' better or 'marginally' better.
And talk about not wanting to buy a Samsung device ... but a Pantech?

Correct me if I'm wrong, might be same family but isn't the 3d at 1.2 dual core?
And I totally get your point, I feel outdated just three months later. Same reason I'm holding off on a tablet...ipad is a perfect example, couple months after spending 600 or so my friend feels like an idiot just a few months later he's considering another 600 just cuz of the stupid camera...

Yup the evo 3d is undervolted to 1.2 ghz for minimum battery drain but will be overclocked soon enough, just look at the g2 overclock threads to see the potential qualcomm chips have.
After a year with my evo, I believe I can easily wait until next year to upgrade since every phone coming out has specs bumps and nothing else . Just because a better spec laptop comes out doesn't mean to run out and get it.
It will be hard but I'm sure ill hold off on the evo 3d and get the next gen evo next july.
What's the point of this thread? The EVO3D has a better screen, higher resolution, and although the clock speed is 1.2 gigahertz, it will easily be able to overclock significantly higher.
The G2, as someone else mentioned, has been overclocked up to 2 gigahertz. A G2, which has an older chipset and has a stock speed of merely 800 MHz.
Which one would you upgrade to and why?

They both seem like good contenders, but personally I am going for the within(galaxy II) unless sprint decides to put a keyboard on it. The sammys cameras have always been on the top list, and watching some vids on the sgs2, the phone destroys all other benchmarks. This video shows a side by side comparison with the 3d, and the sammy seems to win in every category. Motorola has big shoes to fill...

Photon has a photo button and kickstands and higher resolution. And we don't know the sg2 is faster, it has not been tested against the photon. There is rumored to be a Tegra 2 version on the sg2 out there and we might get that one in the us making it almost the same as the photon. Just saying

I think you should check em both out and see which one you like more. People are acting like the sgs2 is some sort of god phone bit really all of these phones are so similarly spec'd that it really comes down to personal preference. I have the E3D and everything about it is sick. I may get an sgs2 to replace my OG EVO though as I would prefer that over the Motorola.
Tapa tapa tapa
I have had bad luck with samsung hardware
but man that photon4g is wayy to sexy
i woud go sgs2. but as said above, it REALLY depends on the processor. ofc, if it gets tegra 2, itll be the same, then its really cosmetics and stock ui... but from what ive read, the Exynos/Orion processors are MUCH faster than the competition. even at 1ghz, the exynos is supposed to be able to beat the tegra. fingers crossed.
The Photon, only because the Samsung GSII might not come in CDMA flavor (carrier blocking), from what I've read.
Otherwise, yeah the GSII.

This is what could really keeps me from considering the Photon but on the other hand, I really want the extra resolution the 3D and Photon have.
Another thing to consider is time to market with Software updates. Although the E3D, SGS2, and Photon all launch with Android 2.3 certain manufacturers are quicker and better at releasing official updates.
I for one have not seen a Samsung firmware release go as planned in over a year. Their updates seem to take forever and when they do roll out they are still buggy (The latest Froyo update to the Sprint version of the SGS was pulled twice before a proper release was done). HTC on the other hand updates first and updates often and very rarely has issues. As far as Motorola is concerned... I can't say as the Photon is the first Moto phone we will be carrying in a long time. That being said I am looking forward to the Photon but my biggest concern is SW support both official and third party.
The Photon is also launching with 2.2.......that and a locked bootloader is reason enough to not get it.
Tegra 2 is also overrated and the Adreno 220 and Exynos easily match, and even beat it in some benchmarks.
I haven't read it confirmed, but it seems likely that it will also have a Pentile display, so despite the higher resolution, it won't look as sharp, as say the screen on the EVO3D.

So it doesn't have a root yet like the 3d, ok

No the Photon is definitely launching with 2.3

It is unconfirmed as to if the boot loader will be locked, at least I have not had a reliable source confirm it. I'll see if I can corner the Motorola rep next time I see him though. If it's anything like the Atrix bootloader it shouldn't be much of an issue though. See:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/motorola-to-unlock-atrix-bootloader-in-future-update/
I am unfamiliar with the differences between a Pentile display and the one the Evo 3D uses. Can you elaborate on how it is inferior?
I'd get the SG2

Love my E3D but since this is for the photon or sgs2 then I would choose the sgs2.

i'm getting the photon. i'm sick of samsung and their lousy and untimely updates. it's between the evo3d and the photon for me, and the "3d" on the new evo really means nothing to me. motorola devices have always been high quality. i won't like the locked bootloader but sammy's record did it for me i guess. the unknown of the photon trumps samsung's terrible record.
dont base your choice SOLELY on the opinions of others. yea, use them to help you out but, when it comes down to it, it's YOUR choice...not theirs. so play around with each phone (I'm assuming you're waiting on the SGSII to land in order to do this anyway so you have the patience already lol). which ever you like better should be the one you get.

of course the photon doesn't have root yet....IT'S NOT RELEASED give it time...it will get it especially since Moto is looking to unlock the bootloader of the Atrix (dunno if it has been done yet)...they'll probably do the same with the Photon (probably not right out of the box tho)
when I was upgrading from the Hero, I went through the same thing (had to choose between OG Evo, Shift and Epic). I wanted the bigger screen so the shift was out right away. I played with both the Evo and the Epic and yea the Epic was better specs (the 1gHz Hummingbird vs 1gHz Snapdragon, Super AMOLED vs LED) but it just felt cheap to me (IMO that seems to be with A LOT of Samsung phones...i've had quite a few over the years and so did a friend of mine and they (the phones) all seemed like that). I knew the Evo had the better development community but that didn't affect my decision.
long story short, choose what YOU feel would be the better fit for YOU. test them out (also look at the Evo 3D to see what the others are talking about when it comes to the screen)
