No thanks. I'll pass on a pantech product.
Is computer hardware or phone tech moving faster
Im not sure what's worse, pantech or kyocera. I think pantech phones would be alright if the UI was better.
Faster doesn't always = better.
Pantech & TFT kinda detracted from the wow factor too.
I oddly like the name "Vega Racer". Why? I'm scared to ask myself.
they look like crappy iphones...IMO..
You need to stop looking at it that way and be happy by how fast the market is going. Would you prefer it if we're still sitting on 500MHz processors like in 2009?
No no not at all, I hear your side too, it just that I would like to get my Evo 3d befirevits outdated by q better processor

The evo 3d uses the same chipset.
I said this a couple of weeks ago. By the time the 3D comes out there will be 3 or 4 more phones with better specs set to drop a couple weeks/months later. Look at the Samsung phone that just leaked on Tmobile.. the Hercules.

The cpu inside the Hercules is the same family as the dual core Snapdragon found in the Evo 3d.
It's not just hardware you have to look at, it's also software. I'm not a huge fan of Sense, but Sense is pretty smooth.

Your point was by the time the 3d is out, there will be faster devices out. You then referenced the Hercules, which will most likely have near same performance of the 3d, but probably borked support from Samsung.
Interesting...but pantech? No thanks.
This epic reply brought to you by none other than my roxx'd out Evo.
Correct me if I'm wrong, might be same family but isn't the 3d at 1.2 dual core?
And I totally get your point, I feel outdated just three months later. Same reason I'm holding off on a tablet...ipad is a perfect example, couple months after spending 600 or so my friend feels like an idiot just a few months later he's considering another 600 just cuz of the stupid camera...

Get over it. Buy a phone you like, enjoy it, and get past the need for having the latest and greatest. Phone envy is a *****. Either that, or man up every 6 months and fork out the dough for the newest on the market. Technology will always be 2 steps ahead of you, that's just the way it is.

Truth.
Not sure this is exactly a new thing, across the board as a whole. Always something better around the corner. And what's there to be bothered about something being better than something you don't even own yet ... ? Whether or not it is 'entirely' better or 'marginally' better.
And talk about not wanting to buy a Samsung device ... but a Pantech?

Yup the evo 3d is undervolted to 1.2 ghz for minimum battery drain but will be overclocked soon enough, just look at the g2 overclock threads to see the potential qualcomm chips have.
After a year with my evo, I believe I can easily wait until next year to upgrade since every phone coming out has specs bumps and nothing else . Just because a better spec laptop comes out doesn't mean to run out and get it.
It will be hard but I'm sure ill hold off on the evo 3d and get the next gen evo next july.
What's the point of this thread? The EVO3D has a better screen, higher resolution, and although the clock speed is 1.2 gigahertz, it will easily be able to overclock significantly higher.
The G2, as someone else mentioned, has been overclocked up to 2 gigahertz. A G2, which has an older chipset and has a stock speed of merely 800 MHz.

Hopefully Sprint will get a version. I know it's gsm, but I hold out hope for a dual core snapdragon.
I still think the Galaxy phones with the HummingBird and GPU will own for quite a while. Technically your hero is dual Core already. Just one core is really tiny and slow (modem core).
By the time that comes out, something better will be on the horizon like it is right now. Phone technology is advancing fast. I'm going for the galaxy.

I assume it could probably be done if the kernel does anything with it...
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm 33 years old. My first computer was an Tandy 1000. My next computer was a Pentium 166. I remember when processors were coming out every month or so, edging the cap up just a little bit higher. I remember them having a starting price worth more than the car I owned at the time.
So pick a phone, buy it and be happy with it for a year. If you're always waiting for the next best thing, you'll never buy anything. If you always get pissy when you buy something and something better comes out, just stop buying.

im actually thinking about giving the evo a second chance now that 2.2. is out for it. i now have an extended battery for it too. i won't touch a samsung phone.
Why you would consider the Samsung over the evo. The battery life is not much greater on the galaxy S series. Got a few co workers with both version (vibrant, captivate). We compare and contrast every day. They are all great phones but would not swap none 4 the other. Plus the evo got that 4g along with a front facing cam only if u were thinking of the epic 4g.

I can't imagine needing a dual-core CPU phone, how much quicker than a modded N1 or Evo can you really get, not saying I wont buy one when they are out but still..
The Sprint Galaxy S has a section on XDA... I might go for that. I'm not picky about what brand name the phone is as long as I can crack smack hack and whack.
I'm 25 and my first computer was a commador 64. I didn't get another until Pentium 4 was out. That's a big jump. Yup always something a little better around the corner.
I can't wait till I can run Wine and play my game on my phone.
As far as saying you don't need faster than the evo or n1, it depends on what you are trying to run. Try putting windows 7 on that old comadore. What's the famous quote by bill gates saying computers would never need more than a few megs of ram?
And I wouldn't want to get a Samsung either but I do like the proc/gpu and physical keyboard

I'm up for upgrade in December from my Hero, but hopefully this rumored HTC "Sabor" is coming out around that time..
Supposedly it's the "Evo 2" and sounds VERY nice.
Link missing, since I can't post it... Recap below:
5. HTC SABOR- HOLY CRAP. Do you remember me talking about the HTC Scorpion, a rumored 1.5 ghz device? Well Sprint gave that one up. Sad? NOOOOO! Instead they are getting the HTC Sabor (code name ofcourse) that is a 2ghz (or possible dual core depending on who you talk to) device to compete with the 2ghz moto device coming to Verizon wireless late this year!!!! THANKYOU SPRINT?! This change was recently made as this phone will be the successor of the Evo and will hit shelves either Q4 2010 or Q1 2011. This is all dependent on the moto release date. Be looking for an over 1000 res screen (possibly that 1270 res Google is allowing), android 3.0 (gingerbread), 2 cams one being a 10 mp, 1080p recording,& kickstand =]. This device will essentially be the Evo 2, and is rumored to be the gingerbread flagship device. Naturally WiMAX is expected. More on this one hopefully coming soon.

epic or evo... these two are on the top of my list!
or wait and see what other droid phones sprint comes out with by 2011. aka hero2 or desire.
so anyways what do you think might be your next move from the hero?
I don't want an Evo..too damn big..and I don't want another clunky phone with a physical keyboard after getting used to my touch keyboard on my hero, coming from 5 TP2's....So..I guess a Desire would be nice if Sprint ever gets it,or a Hero 2 if that ever comes out..A little bit bigger screen would be nice with HD capabilities along with a 2g processor and 1g of memory

There's an old saying you should remember..
" It's better to have it and not need it,than to need it and not have it.."
Once you go to a larger screen, you will need more horse power under the hood.I have a co-worker who has to have the absolute latest thing out when it comes to cell phones..The guy has about 10 of them and a couple on different carriers..He has a Evo..and is getting a Epick as soon as he can..that's just hoiw he is..but he thinks my rooted Hero is da ****s and is ever bit as fast as his Evo the way it is stock. I just don't like how it feels in my hand and feels ungainly to me when I try to make a call on them..But hey..to each his own as they say.. We will probably see something at ctia, so it can look like the big draw of the show.
Probably won't be an Evo 2... but rather some other crappy name HTC puts on its phone. I wish they named their phones better. It would be better for them in a marketing point of view, cause all of their phones just seem so random (they create the pool of Android phones with random names and bad GPUs, lol).
Anyway, I love my Evo, just wish it was better in some areas (screen, camera, GPU)... and that's all I'm looking for in an upgrade.
CTIA is usually where Sprint shines.

If anyone read any of the stats on the evo shift, they would clearly see it's better in every aspect (as long as you dont mind no Front facing cam, and 5mb rear cam). The 800mhz is wayyyyyyyy better than the 1ghz the evo has, has more updated software all the way around. So they made the screen smaller probably to accomodate for the added thickness of having a physical keyboard. You guys need to realize it's not all about the specs all the time.. HTC knew exactly what they were doing when they put out that phone.
There wont be a evo 2....there is supposed to be the htc sabor coming out that is going to be the upgrade of the evo....google it
^As far as I know the HTC Sabor isn't real. At least no one has said anything substantial about it, and certainly nothing has been confirmed (unless you read Ozcarguide........)
Anyway I'm expecting to hear something at ctia. Not expecting an "Evo 2" per se, but at least a top-notch smartphone for sprint to lead with in 2011

No, it still is.
Keep in mind we're talking about Sprint specifically and not all carriers.
The iPhone rumors are just that.
And yes, it's just logic that [due to no CDMA exclusivity] the iPhone will come to Sprint at some point [and all carriers]
But the fact is that Sprint is going to have the next generation of phones come out in summer.
They always do.
It's more important now..more than ever before.
And it would just be the silliest...most retarded business decision in the history of business decisions to NOT follow up the highest selling phone in carrier history with a phone that is updated.
Maybe it won't be HTC, but you bet it will be dual-core and the same basic size etc of the Evo.

No, the Evo shift is actually slightly better than the Epic.
Although you're correct that the Evo Shift much improved over the Evo.
The Evo Shift IS better than the Evo, spec wise.
It has the updated core [top of the line til the tegra 2 series at CES]
It has a GPU 4x more powerful than the Evo's.
The core in the Evo Shift is 45 nm as opposed to 65nm [thus much better battery life with more power]
And, as I have said in the past, clock speed is irrelevant.
...much like the Pentium 4 3.06 ghz core is NOT faster than the i7 core that run at 2.53 GHz....

http://community.sprint.com/baw/com...android-40-ice-cream-sandwich-for-htc-devices
Sprint will begin to rollout Google's latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, to our customers in early 2012. Ice Cream Sandwich will be available via an over-the-air update to a variety of devices including HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and other key products in our line-up. Stay tuned for more details and exact timing.
On their facebook posting they also added this key bit of information:
Information about Ice Cream Sandwich for the original HTC EVO 4G will be communicated at a later date. So take that for what it is, but it looks like the EVO is in for possibly one last update.

Per http://androidandme.com/2011/11/new...e-of-devices-to-get-android-4-0-in-early-2012
A quick review of the list shows these are all newer devices released in 2011 with either a Snapdragon S2 or Snapdragon S3 processor. Google already said that aging devices like the Nexus One with a Snapdragon S1 processor were “too old” to be upgraded, so don’t get your hopes up if you have the original HTC EVO 4G that features similar specs.

This is going to fragment the hell out of the Android market. Well, it will fragment it even further is what I mean by that.
*Sigh* The EVO is the most popular Android phone for Sprint and it's going to stuck in 2011 forever. Some people (Not me) may have purchased their EVO within the past 6 months and wouldn't be eligible for an upgrade until Android 5/6 is out. That's like a PR nightmare. Most people don't understand the "GeeBee's" or GHz concepts that we are familiar with, but what they will do is get bored after awhile of the same damn homescreen and want something with more piazza. People like new stuff! Especially when they don't have to pay for it. Even the technologically retarded see an update to (2.2/2.3) on their EVO and go, "Well this is cool!"
I don't really blame HTC, (Although I do wish the EVO had more internal storage) I blame Google. ICS is GPU intensive, which is nice and flashy, but that's a problem for older phones that can't process those fancy graphics. That's also going to be a drag for battery life, and I personally would rather have less swag and more function. They should of made a "light" version of ICS, or an option toggle-able on beefer handsets or "required" for older that lessens the graphics and RAM to both save battery life on high end phones and allows older handsets to upgrade to the new OS and still feel valid in this ever changing world of Moore's.
A light version would be nice. It's too bad the evo doesn't have better internals. If ics was to somehow get ported, the fancy graphics will lag like crazy.

I'm sure they have tested it out. The Evo doesnt have a gpu, and doesnt have enough ram to run ics smoothly. I'm sure there will be roms available for it, but no official updates.

The EVO, just like the Nexus One has an Adreno 200 GPU. It's pretty under powered compared to newer phones of course.
I have no doubt we'll see a few roms out for both the EVO and Nexus One, I'm sure they'll be broken at first but over time they'll become great.
We will get ICS ports no matter what. I'm not expecting an official OTA, but I would like to see some updated drivers and the newest kernel source (here the newest kernel has trickle charging!) from HTC

To be honest, all I'm interested in are the new Apps. I haven't used 4.0 on anything other than the SDK, but the new People (Contacts) App, the new Dialer, Gallery, Calendar and a few other miscs could be ported. The only problem is all the new API's wouldn't work. I honestly am too much of a LauncherPro lover to switch to the ICS launcher. (Give me a scrollable dock and I'll jump ship) And some apps like the Multitasking, keyboard and the new dictionary, may be baked too deeply into the OS to salvage as a a simple apk or install.
I'm sure the guys here at XDA will cook up something, I've already taken a few turns at butchering the Galaxy Nexus ROM that dropped a few days ago, but I'm sure there's a few more dedicated people really toying away getting stuff working on their "obsolete" device.
I just need to make it till August 2012, just gotta keep on telling myself that. Hello quad-core 2.0GHz EVO3! (That's a guess by the way.) Until then, CES is in two months, can't wait to go!
Yeah, I really want to wait for till next June at least too, though it'll be hard......but if we got a mostly stable version of ICS for our EVO's, it'd definitely be easier to wait.
The SGSII has been out for over 6 months now, and while it's still impressive, I feel like I'd be settling if I grabbed one or a phone like it.
Give me a 4.5-4.7 720p screen with no pentile, 1.5 or 2 gigs of ram and Cortex A-15 quad-core phone!
We'll have to wait till at least next June for something of the sort.

Yup, that's exactly what I'm looking forward to, you took the specs right out of my mouth. And to be honest, the community here for the original EVO is still superb 15 months after release.
The only things my phone can't do is play high-graphics games and NFC. The camera quality ticks me off sometimes and battery life can be a bummer, especially with an LCD screen. But the EVO is a solid device, I still get a few "What phone is that?" from people who are interested in the 4.3" display and my custom interface, most expect Sense.
Plus, kickstand. I mean come on guys... Kickstand.
We'll be booting* 4.0 within the next 3 months, I'm sure. Open source me some code Google. You already messed up with the minimum requirements, let us take it from here.

The sgsii not coming here for 6 months kind of makes it old already lol means Sammy has been updating it for half yr plus I mean that only leaves them with a yr required to update per the agreement they came to with Google. And doesn't the prime have a 200 gpu or some the same one as the nexus s just double the clock speed?

I really wanted to get the Galaxy Nexus at first, but it has a pentile display, which isn't a total deal breaker, but LG has the Optimus LTE coming out soon to Europe with the same resolution and no pentile, so we should definitely see some phones with truly non-hampered HD screens soon enough.
The GPU in it is also the same as the one in the first iPad and first Galaxy S line of phones.......it's literally a GPU that's been around for years, which is very disappointing.
I know it'll still be admirable phone, and have great performance overall, but it's not the dream gadget everyone was hoping it would be.
Dear Vibrant,
You have kicked a lot of ass these past few years. With the help of all these badass developers on XDA, you were still able to outperform many new devices especially those crappy HTC phones. Unfortunately, I'm happily looking forward to replacing you with a Galaxy S3. The hardest decision now is which color do I get?
Best Wishes,
Nick

Wow.
After all the frustration you've experience with the Vibrant, you're going to pony right back up to Samsung with your hard-earned money, and yet again suckle from their teat?
Not me, good sir, not me.

I re-read his original post several times and have yet to see any indication of "frustration." Any chance you might be attributing your own personal experiences to him?

I agree that Samsung has delayed the updates etc. But do you not agree they make one hell of a phone?
My Vibrant has been the greatest phone i have ever had, and I'll go right back to Samsung, know why? Samsung may not provide the best timed updates, but look at the other manufacturers. HTC and Motorola both lock bootloaders, and for me its a choice between HTC or Samsung. Samsung clearly wins. Specially with the developers we have here.
Also @ OP
I think the is it Pebble Blue? Looks pretty good, but its being delayed internationally because they screwed up on the battery covers.

I enjoyed the Vibrant. I wasn't frustrated whatsoever. I'm looking forward to the gs3. I will give Samsung another chance.

If Samsung keeps their phones as easy to root and flash as the Vibrant has been I'll be more than happy to go back. Aside from having to do the hardware GPS fix I've had no complaints with the Vibrant... not to say I wouldn't enjoy the SIII though
As long as you didn't stay on stock (and why would you if you're lurking around these parts of XDA) the Vibrant has been a dream with how easy you can load up what you want. And for a device going on 2 years old it's very impressive how it's held up and is still able to rock ICS builds with minimul issues.
I'm going off the contract grid in a couple of months, and I'll be rolling the Vibrant until the wheels fall off. Next one will probably be the Galaxy Nexus since it probably the least hassle without a contract, but hopefully there's another price drop (come on $300...) before I have to put my good ol' Vibrant out to pasture.
Completly agree with everyone else. My vibrant has been the best phone I've had...true it had its moments, like anything, but it still outruns most new phones. I've had the vibrant for 2 years and it's never let me down (except in the gps department lol). It still runs like new....and actually with all the development it actually runs better NOW then every before lol I will be sad to let it go, but the sg3 will be the first phone that makes me want to move forward....but not because I feel the vibrant underachieves by any means. In fact, I'm donating my vibrant to a good friend of mine who is stuck with a ****ty htc device until he can upgrade. So it will get its use for another 2 years at least.
Since T-Mobile USA isn't LTE yet, I have a good feeling the S3 is going to be Quad-Core. If it isn't, I might get a Galaxy Nexus or wait till September to see what else comes out.
Most probably tmobile sg3 will have krait s4 chip coz specs are out for Canadian 42 mbps HSPA+ and it has s4 dual core chip. On the bright side it has 2 Gb ram

Do you think the 2 gb of ram is necessary?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA
Not sure if 2 GB it's necessary. But i am pretty pissed with apps closing in the background while browsing in opera and services like my email and Swype closing due to lack of ram in vibrant. Also many games like shadowgun and MC3 just won't run, not because hummingbird soc can't handle, but not enough ram. I believe in long term usage more ram is better than quad core over dual core, when the socs are of the same generation.
