iPhone 4- Played with it... No Thanks - EVO 4G General

So my father picked up the iPhone 4 yesterday, and we played with it for hours. We both had a 3g and 3gs in the past.
All I can say is, man am I glad I switched to the EVO! For starters, the screen on the iPhone 4 is too small to appreciate the glamorous "Retina" display.
I opened up the "iBook" application and looked at the sample book in there. How the heck can you read on that screen? The colors look sharp, but hardly any text fits on the page.
I think Apple shouldn't have wasted so much space on the bezel and bumped the screen up to 4 inches.
The next big caveat was not being able to visit flash sites on the iPhone 4. That really pissed off my dad, because I was flaunting the EVO loading the same pages in glorious flash. In the past, I didn't realize how important flash was. I looked pass the limitation because it was a holy Apple device. Not so much anymore... And I love how Android gives you the option to load flash on demand.
I actually much preferred the curvier shape of the previous iPhones. The iPhone 4's box shape irritated my hands after 15 minutes of use.
The final thing that got my dad riled up was the fact that video chat is only allowed between iphone 4's and limited strictly to wifi. I showed him fring and quik with all of their video chat glory over 3g, and that made him oh so jealous.
This might seem like a small thing, but the kickstand on the EVO is an important feature to me... I'm really glad HTC included it.
At the end of the night, my dad said he was going to write a letter to Apple asking them to put a bigger screen on the next iPhone, lol.
Overall, the new iPhone 4 is quite snappy and responsive, but that's all it is. It is true that the App Store has apps that still aren't available on the Android market (still waiting for Bloomberg), but they're coming... The retina display looks crisp, but that damn screen is too tiny to appreciate it. All the other features, such as the 5 megapixel camera and the front facing camera, are NOT revolutionary. They have been around for quite some time.
Apple makes incremental improvements but claims they're "Magical" and "Revolutionary". I bought that **** for a while, but it really is played out now.
I love my EVO, and I love Android. I'm free to do whatever I want with my phone...

I know, right!

There's 2 other things that I feel the iPhone has over the EVO and that's the gyroscope and the iPhone's ability to record HD videos in H.264 and AAC audio compared to the EVO's limitation of MPEG4 video and 8kHz Narrowband AMR audio. But all of the reasons you mention are the same reasons I knew the EVO was my next phone. Still enjoying it and know I made the right decision.

Literally apples and oranges mate. Last i heard from Engadget, their iPhone 4 (review) lasted 30-something hours and they used the heck out of it. So not being able to view flash content does not matter to some folks. I've had an iPod Touch for the longest and never concerned about flash really when mobile browsing.
4G is nice in theory but how long does your battery last. The Evo barely lasts a whole day right now as it is.
Face time video chat is only wifi for now until end of year (At&T's crappy network might be to blame there as well) they said plus anyone can hook into the API and use it with their app. Skype already mentioned interest, so who knows if it might move from iPhone 4 - iPhone 4 as it is now to cross platform.
You make valid points but I've played with the Evo and not fully satisfied with the performance and definitely not with the battery life. I literally had to turn off everything useful just to eek out a work day's worth of juice.

I turn my 4g off unless I visit a heavy content site on the go. That's where it shines... when you need it for quick bursts of speed.
As far as battery life, here is something I absolutely do not comprehend...
Why in the world do you need your battery to last longer than 24 hours? Plug it in at night you lazy bastards, lol (to diffuse any tension)... My EVO is on 15% before I go to sleep, and that is with heavy use throughout the whole day. I suck a lot of data through my web browsing. I am definitely satisfied as it gets me through the day. Might there be a day when I go overboard and I have to plug in before night time? Yes. So what, it's not often.
I think the whole battery life lasting for days-on-end-thing is brainwash and a stroke of the ego.
Now if your EVO is not lasting all day, that is another story. You should check out some of the custom ROMS in the DEV section. They rock! I am using Avalaunch's EVOlution 8 Rev A, and it works wonders. I love froyo.

I was a iphone owner for the better part of 3 years, my father recently purchased the iphone as well. He's coming from the blackberry bold. I asked myself what is on the iphone 4 that I'm missing on my 3g iphone? I really don't see it. The devices out there elsewhere are fantastic, and without such restriction.
For my father though, I'm sure he appreciates it more.

I stand by the OP. I has both a 3g and a 3gs and the iPhone4 was a contender until I used the Evo for a bit and realized how awesome having a nice 4.3" screen is. Apple just didn't want to go back to the drawling board and make their screen larger. While the Evo does have it's limitations I do love it. And with any luck most of the bugs will be worked out by ROM developers, where as everyone must wait for anything to be fixed by Apple, not to mention I would never get an iPhone if I could not jailbreak it... and that looks bleak with the new OTA updates ATT and Apple are going to be doing. Also another huge problem with the phone is ATT, they blow.

I also hear you can't multi-task like you can on the EVO. My friend said it has more color to the display than the EVO does. He said that's all it has on the EVO. Not to mention that ATT is ditching all their everything plans and capping the maximum you can download every month. No thank you Apple... I'll gladly stick with my EVO.

I returned my evo to get an iphone 4. Screw HTC build quality and horrible buggy software. The Evo's UI is so unbelievably laggy I can't believe that anyone can stand it. Even my non-techie wife thought it looked like a piece of crap from the 90s.
I'm glad that apple products don't have flash. Flash is a security vulnerability and a complete and utter annoyance on the internet. I can not wait until it is completely eliminated.
You know a phone is a piece of garbage when you start it up for the first time and the first thing you see after the boot screen is an error message saying an application had to be closed. That's what happened to both of my evos.

So we are lazy bastards because we don't live next to an AC outlet or carry one around on the go. So you're knocking the iPhone because of it's better battery life vs the Evo and that's supposed to be a plus for the Evo..odd.

Apple stuck with 3.5" because the iPhone is a mainstream targeted device. Over 50% of the population (female) have smaller hands & Android is still male dominated.

A few of my friends are reporting that their battery isn't lasting as long as Engadgets did. It might be that it needs a few cycle but it has used up 6% in around 2 hours just using it as an iPod.
The Evo's battery isn't that bad, people are able to use up to 15-25 hours on a full charge. You just have to be somewhat knowledgable to achieve that. For me I don't need more than 10 hours since I have a desk job where I can plug in my phone, a car charger, etc.
If I plan on going away I can throw down 10$ and get an extra battery. iPhone 4 you don't have that option.
Apple is superb at setting the standard pretty low but still be at the top of the game. It's quite sad.

Well they excel at UI simplification (unfortunately at the expense of options for power users)..hardware immediately after refresh can be compelling as well if you can tolerate the walled garden+network..

Yep nice comment history. Sounds like Apple has you handing them money hook, line, and sinker. I came from a 3GS(only one I ever had) and never want to get an iPhone again.

I believe their UI is ugly, icons on icons. No customization whatsoever. I bedazzle my friends when I switch from Sense to ADW launcher etc.
But that's really all iPhones are now, new hardware. I used my friends iPhone 4 and asked him if it does anything new from his 3GS. It doesn't.
I also laughed when I was using it and he got a notification. Notification pop-ups are so ****ty. Pretty much put the phone in a frozen state until you acknowledge it. I love having a pull down menu for my notifications.

I messed with one yesterday too, and really liked it. The screen is much crisper than my Evo. Also, pictures in the browser looked WORLDS better (I tried the stock browser and Dolphin HD) on the iPhone. Text was also much clearer when you zoomed in (it gets fuzzy when zooming in on the Evo).
My Evo still has it's advantages, and the iPhone wasn't good enough for me to switch back, but it was certainly good enough for me to consider just upgrading my wife's iPhone to a new one.

Advice: Nexus One over iPhone (not quite a vs. thread)

So I am looking to purchase a Nexus One sometime within the next month or so. I'm an AT&T user and currently am using the FUZE with a custom ROM and running the Eclair XDAndroid build, which obviously doesn't compare to a real android device in any way, shape, or form. I'm completely aware of the features and abilities of both the iPhone and the N1, so this isn't really a feature comparison thread. On paper I know what the N1 is capable of, and everyone I know (literally) has a freaking iPhone so I know what that is capable of in the real world with real use.
Getting to the point, since you folks have been using the N1, may I ask what you like about your N1 over the iPhone? I'm following threads and seeing people with dust complaints, tinted screens, horrifying battery life, the touch sensitive buttons at the bottom not responding... and I'm just struggling on convincing myself to spend over $530 USD on a phone that could cause me problems over spending $300 USD on an iPhone that I know performs very well and already has a ton of memory built in, but lacks everything else that I want in the N1. Are most of these issues from earlier models of the phone? Do they occur more in say the T-Mobile version over the AT&T version (or vice-versa)?
I know this probably seems like a dumb thread, but I've searched and I've heard all the comparisons for features, but I just want to hear your comparisons through actual real world experience with the device (even if you haven't use the iPhone. Oh, and I did see the CNET video of the iPhone vs N1 brawl and that definitely is helping me lean more and more towards the N1.
Any advice would be great. Just please don't turn this into a flame war, both phones are fantastic in their own ways.

all those issues only apply to a select few or to people that have major ocd..i did like my iphone but i didnt love it..i love my nexus one its a really great phone..i love that i can use it to tether too my laptop, use it as BRIGHT flash light, customize it too my liking, and not having to deal with iphone.
The one thing i did miss when i went back to android from my iphone was the games..iphone games are really really nice but that feeling has gone away since now alot of the 3d games on the iphone are being made for android.
the iphone is a great phone but the UI is sooooooooooo boring..i hated that 4x4 icon page on it.i love having widgets
so to sum it all up get a nexus one......and a ipad ahah

ya i love my macbook its the best thing that ever happened to me ahah..and honestly the chance of bricking and iphone while jailbreaking is slim to none but its a pain when apple is constantly sending you updates to unjailbreak it..trust me you will not be jealous of their iphones

Awesome note with the games though, I don't play games on my phone much (sadly I'm horribly addicted to solitaire...haha) so I never really got into the games aspect, I only have one or two on my iPod Touch, most of the time I use the basic Apps which are also available on Android (twitter, facebook, shazaam, things like that). So that's a good thing to keep in mind.
I think one of my biggest worries is battery life. I don't work a job where I can charge my phone at all throughout the day, and there are times I leave at 8am and don't get home until 7pm or later, and I don't want to have to worry that my phone won't make it. My WinMo phone always ends at around 60% with standard/moderate use so I never have to worry about running home to get a charge if I get hung up after work.

idk man, by far the best phone i have ever owned so far. (may be contradicting to what i just said but i literally do not care)
features list is just BOOM!
battery is amazing for me. no dead pixels. saturated screen. bright flashlight (nexus one torch).. idk so many to list.
if you wanna buy RIGHT NOW. go for the nexus one,

if you can wait til July...... wait. becuase you may regret it if you dont have the money to buy the newest badass thing, like maybe the 4Gen iPhone, and new product from HTC, or anyone... really its all so hard to tell but if you can wait, i think that'd be in your best interest.
and the only thing i miss about the iphone thats slowly sucking me back in (happens about twice a year, ive owned all the iphones and sold them too haha) is the slickkkkkk UI. the LARGE community and the apps that actually work clean, and flawlessly. the iphones' transition between homescreens is definitely smooth as butter. nexus one? smooth as sand paper.. the ability to take screen shots on the iphone with ease... idk.. haha

nexus one last me a whole a day with heavy usage (texting, internet, games, music, calling) i disagree with the slick UI..iphone has a HORRIBLE UI in my opinion its too plain and transition is just as smooth..the community for android is also huge and screenshots is easy too..just shake the phone (shootme app on market)

i totally agree.. just one night i forgot to plug it in. died later that day though (didnt necessarily let it "die" i just shut it off at like 2%)

My phone is simply perfect. No issues whatsoever, apparently I am one of the lucky Nexus owners. The only thing though, I do like about the iPhone more - is the UI polish. Apple is simply great at designing things. I'm ok though, as long as I have a Desire ROM. HTC Sense is quite nice.

Youll be happy with the nexus. It is great now and stands to realize much of its latent potential if Google wants it to. If you've had an iPhone you will definitely be disappointed in the touch screen. It's possible though that Android might be able to iron out some of the jittery, jumpiness of the nexus touch screen. But its a decent screen,those who have never used an iPhone think the nexus has the best touch screen there is so its definitely not a deal breaker.
Also, the nexus has higher resolution but I don't think there's and denying that the iPhone just looks crisper, especially the browser. But the nexus gpu definitely loads pages faster. I think I'm just rambling now...

It all comes down to your personal preference. You can read all types of reviews and you'll see that Nexus One wins over iPhone 3GS. The features of the phone are outstanding. Just ask yourself what you want in your phone. If you want lots of applications, music, go for iPhone but if you want free applications, customizations, widgets, great camera, blazing fast web experience, go for Nexus One. Its just a matter of time before android applications touch the mark set by iPhone. Once you root your Nexus One, its going to be a whole world of possibilities....
For the issues you read about Nexus One, I want to tell you that the tinted screen is only present in the newer devices which would be very soon fixed by an update. The capacitive buttons work perfectly when pressed on the upper half of the button. The dust problem is present in a very small no. or hardwares and if you live in US, then you can call for a replacement if it happens with you.
Android would very soon be taken up by most of the mobile makers as its open sourced and free. I read somewhere that the phone companies who have taken up android OS have to pay very little in comparison to Windows Mobile.
So go for Nexus One, you wont be sorry....

Having thought about it I realised that the choice to go for an N1 is easy if it fits your needs. Since it has been released all the focus has been on how it compares to the iphone. Understandable as apple set a high bar with many features such as the apps, the graphical physics and ease of use. The n1 more or less matches them and comparing many of these features doesn't get you far. They both are fantastic bits of hardware, great screens, amazing computing power, touchscreens etc. In some ways the N1 performs a bit better in others the iphone but the differences between them are small.
However I think the N1 has gone to a new level with features the iphone simply hasn't got. I don't have to open an app to access the information I want. My calender, agenda, weather, news, daily Bible reading, personal photo's, music player (and playlists) one touch dialling to favourite contacts (and many other thing I don't use) all run on my home pages. And here's where it moves mobile information on; all these widgets update automatically and wirelessly. I don't have to plug my phone into my computer to update my agenda, it happen without hassle right onto my homescreen. Furthermore these services are free - and yes I did pay for mobile me and no its not worth it.
Bottom line is that both the iphone and the N1 are great bits of kit, you won't notice many gains in function between either hardware as far as I can tell but the software has moved on from simply apps. Unfortunately the press just focus on the things that you can compare but the how can you compare widget on a N1 to nothing on the iphone? The N1 is in a different class to the iphone because it does things the iphone can't dream of doing, try to keep up apple!

Though I will admit that the iPhone is probably a little more user friendly, I don't mind the extra clicks on Android, and it's not like it's difficult to figure out by any stretch of the means. And it's good to know that the issues people are having are only occurring in a small percentage of devices, I was really worried that I would throw down that kind of money and have a jacked phone that only lasted me half a day and had a dusty mis-tinted screen...haha. Hopefully I'll be able to get my N1 ordered by the end of this month.
The next step would be rooting. I don't think I'll root it until after the warranty is up, but I don't know, I said the same thing about ROMing my FUZE and that didn't happen. Though on an unrelated question, how come so many N1 ROM threads don't have screenshots of the ROM. The ShootMe app works great, I use it on my FUZE with Eclair. It just seems like a big risk to install a ROM without knowing what you're supposed to be getting.

actually its less clicks for android lol you know with the widgets and all..with the iphone it takes four clicks to modify your brightness for android it takes one, it takes 3 clicks to turn on wifi and bluetooth on iphone and on android it takes one, it takes 4 clicks for gps on iphone and android 1, it takes 3 clicks to post something on facebook and 1 on android (same for myspace), it takes takes 2 clicks to search on iphone and none on android..you see my point lol

Warranty is 1 year, you will get hot feet by then. There should be desire screenshots around. CyanogenMod's UI is identical to stock, extra features being the selling point.

Are you running on the HTC Li-Ion battery or some new U-235 battery?

The Nexus One is great. I don't have complaints so far other than the tiny loudspeaker. Heard that the Desire ROM gives it a louder volume. Anyway, like someone has pointed out, if you can wait until June, I would wait. I think Apple sees the Android OS as a thread so they must be building something big for the iphone 4Gen. The iphone 4Gen will probably be better the Nexus One... BUT I am confident that the Nexus Two or whatever Google wants to release in the future will take over eventually
Not saying the Nexus One will lose to the 4Gen for sure. Remember FroYo and Flash 10 are coming to the Nexus One.

I am starting to be torn about my Evo and the upcoming Iphone. I have rode with Android from the beginning. Even jumping carriers so that I could get the Evo. I am reading the Live Blog from the Apple conference and I am slightly jealous...
I despise Stevie, but I must admit that he always comes up with some extra slickness that you need in your life.

The only thing that seems like a significant improvement is the display other than that the iPhone isn't conjuring up alot of envy for me right now.

I was kinda interested in the new imovie. Records in full HD w/ flash on. You can create edit with transitions right from the phone. Even add any music that you have on the device as a soundtrack.

You still have time.. 30 days return policy if you want to get the new iPhone 4

The only major improvement I'm seeing so far is the screen, and that's a lot less impressive than expected when it's still on a 3.5 inch screen.
The gyroscope is also sort of neat, I guess, but it's no reason to change phones.
The camera also looks rather impressive, but I can't help but wonder whether it's compressed at all. After all, Jobs mentioned that nothing has been done to the recorded video after the user is done filming. From what I've seen, HTC compreses the hell out of their video files, something that might be changeable by software.

That's a biggie for me too. I have the Ipad and Ipod Touch, both hacked precisely because I need my freedom.

I think they made some nice changes, but not enough for me to switch back from the Evo/Android to iPhone. I'm gone from the Fanboi ranks.

While I must admit, the fluidity of the iOS is nice, refined, etc etc...Millions of apps (1/512th of which you'd actually use daily) and accessories out the whazoo...android/Evo is still nice.
Let's be realistic, iMovie?...on a 3.5 inch screen? Or the resolution...on a 3.5 inch screen?...it's pointless. It's a tiny screen, I mean even a 4.3 inch screen with those specs would be mildly thrilling.

It's a nice phone, but I like my Evo more. The only thing I hate about the Evo is that I got spoiled with a huge screen, I hated it at first and felt that I made a mistake in buying it because it's bigger...but now I look at my Hero and think..."How the hell will I ever go back to a small screen like that!?"

If he surprised me with a 3.8 or 4.0 or even 4.3 screen with that resolution I would have to consider it heavily and in fact would have upgraded my 3GS for it. But at 3.5 inch screen I don't care that he packs in that kind of resolution. My EVO is not my movie studio or camera. They were put in place for moments you are in a pinch.
You can have flash on full time as well while recording video. It's call Torch on and Video On
The iOS4 is nothing much. Battery life will remain to be seen. The can claim better battery life because he upgraded the processor (efficient) and kept the screen size smaller. A good move for battery life but not a good move for people who would like a larger screen.
WP7 will require at least a 3.8" screen to start. So it will be interesting to see what happens next with them.

please give up the EVO if your even remotely thinking about the ICRAP

I've had all three iphones since their respective launch days over the years. I've recently switched to the Evo and loving it. Even with their new hardware, I still think the evo is superior. The android OS is a little quirky, and I especially think scrolling is way worse on the evo and the android market is a joke so far, but I really like the OS overall compared to Apple's locked down OS.
I'm not switching back!

seriously? I have had every iphone and also android since g1. I really do like the iphone but I hate att. I was just watching the same feed of the release about ios4 and there is nothing new. Yes, I do like the way you can video chat with ease but only on wifi and only with other iphone 4's?
I think there is a place for the iphone but this announcement was more of a "keep up with the jones" than anything earth shattering.

Yep, I'm a hater. I only own 1 apple device...an IPod Nano, and the only reason I have that is I needed the close stereo integration on my boat (long story).
Having said that, if this IPhone was available on Verizon or Sprint or even TMobile...I would probably consider it.
Although the screen is smaller than the Evo the IPS technology looks slick not to mention a 960x640 resolution.
I also like the gyro. That has a lot of potential...granted it's also a little gimmicky, but I'm a geek and I like new toys.
I think the Evo could have better picture quality with an 8mp camera vs 5mp for Apple, but Apple does a great job with the actual image quality.
It also sounds like Apple finally implemented multi-tasking without killing the battery life. I don't completely believe it until I see it in person...but it looked promising.
I also like the free video calls from Iphone4 to Iphone4.
Having said all that, I still hate Apple. I will stick with my 3rd generation Nano and my Hero & Evo. It's just too bad someone can't put Apple in their place. The IPad could have been placed on the backburner with a HP Slate, and Android has a lot of cool phones, but none I would consider a complete IPhone killer.
Its so frustrating because I believe Android has the ability to put Apple in it's place, but when it comes to an actual full released product...it's just not quite there yet.

Hero vs. Evo: my experience

I have had both of these phones for a while now, and have not noticed a huge speed difference between them. (The Hero can get bogged down briefly, but it is very infrequent. And I should say that my first Hero was not nearly as fast as my current one for some reason…)
In my opinion the most noticeable differences are:
Size, of course. My typing on the huge screen is far more accurate on the Evo because the keys are further apart - this is a welcome change for sure. The Evo still fits in pockets easily though, and does not feel much heavier than the Hero. The Evo does feel very solid and high quality though, for sure. And the Evo screen's resolution is superb: it makes the Hero screen look pixelated when looking closely.
I miss the trackball - the nav keys on the Evo are nowhere near as convenient.
Sound quality for calls on my Hero is very good, but the Evo sounds even better. Very loud and clear on both ends. (and each of these sounds way better then the Blackberries I have been using)
3g data throughput is about the same on these phones, and even though I am in the middle of LA, there is no 4g that I can detect. Lame considering the $10 premium.
Battery life has been very good on the Evo. Seems to last as long as my Hero – which is to say at least 24 hours in normal use. And the Evo loses only about 1% charge or less per hour when in standby! (I am not using the Mail app on either phone, because the POP function kills the battery in a few hours. Instead I use the gmail app and have it POP my outside mail accounts for me, and they are pushed to the phone by Google. Works just as well as POP, and the battery life improvement is *drastic.*)
In all I would say if you are happy with the Hero and do not intend to watch movies or do a lot of gaming on your phone, you might want to wait and see which other Android phones come to Sprint.
I would also say that if you are itching for a new large screen phone or if you type a lot, this Evo looks and feels aswesome, and at $200 it is a steal.

I just cant see people comparing... This is like comparing a 2002 Benz to a 2010 Benz. Sure you can update the 2002 to run just as fast and smooth as the 2010, but in the end, the 2010 can be updated even more to run like a 2020....
Sorry, I just use cars as comparisons a lot. The only constant thing that I see people complain about the Evo is... screen size, and what do you know, every new smartphone coming out now is 4+ inches lol.

For the record, I am now getting better battery life out of the Evo! Hard to believe considering the screen size...
And I agree, this thing is large. But I am getting used to it, partly because the type on the screen is so much easier to read.

Speed is not the same, but in practice there is not a big difference. Especially if your Hero is overclocked.
I say the main advantage is the huge screen - makes for much more comfortable reading, watching movies, sprint tv, games, etc. (I often strain to see the tiny type on the Hero screen - for example in the gmail app.) Also typing is much easier and more accurate on the big screen.
If you are not interested in a larger screen, keep your Hero.

iPhone 4 vs. EVO, another opinion.

Yeah, I know, it's been compared 400 times. But, I thought I would make it 401.. because I don't like even numbers.
Anyway, I finally got my hands on an iPhone 4 while at the AT&T store and I walked away with a different opinion than I had without any physical contact.
First off, I think it feels really good in the hand. I had the iPhone 1G, 3G, 3GS (1st gen feeling the best to me.) I like the flat, sharp corners and double glass feel. It's quite different than any other phone I've used. Design wise, it is sexy and very eye catching. the gaps between the bezel (antennas) isn't so sexy though, obviously, this was a half assed attempted at keeping the antennas from creating a bridge and losing service....we all know how well THAT worked.
The Retina Display is breathtaking. while standing at the store, I couldn't see pixels, but, I do have great eye sight, and I'm sure if I was able to sit down and REALLY focus, I would be able to start seeing something. at that time, I could not.
At the same time that I was impressed with the screen, I wasn't impressed that much. I mean, sure, it's SUPER high res and looks fantastic, but when I pulled the EVO out of my pocket and compared side by side. during any typical use where I wasn't examining the phones...LOOKING for "flaws", I wouldn't notice at all.. But what I would and could, and DID notice, was the EVO's huge, pretty (but not "breathtaking") screen. So while, yes, it's "prettier". if you already have a high res screen... it's really not such a revolution. just a nice bump. and personally, I think the larger screen size of the EVO is FAR more useful than a higher resolution.
iOS4 feels nicer than 3.0 did. But after having my EVO since Launch day, the iOS platform just seems so boring in comparison. you get a lot of icons...and.. that's really it, the only way to customize it, or make it look different from the pack is to drop a different wallpaper on it (which, finally, can be done without jailbreaking.) and re-arrange you're icons. whoopee. unless you jailbreak, of course, than you have far more options.
EVO, or more specifically, Android has WAY more options in this field to not only make the phone look unique to you, but also create far different and instant different and personal usable spaces with widgets. I really prefer the android platform for this.
As I couldn't sit there and run down the battery on the iOS4.. I can't compare that. haha, but I have read that the iPhone4's battery is pretty much epic... with enough tweaking, custom ROM and kernel, I can manage decent battery out of the EVO now. about 10hrs heavy use, upwards of 20 with very light usage. Here is hoping that future versions of Android can help with power management, I'm not holding my breath though, as I know Android does far more in the background than iOS. if you have everything syncing all the time, facebook, twitter, flickr, gmail, weather, news, etc. etc. it'll suck down the battery like a diabetic craves Nutella.
With my brief time with the iPhone 4, I walked away loving the design, STILL bored with the OS, shrugging at the Retina Display, still holding contempt for AT&T, and finally, still glad I switched to the EVO.

With that rom and his custom kernel I get around 50 hours with light to moderate usage, and my friend who has the iphone only gets around a day and a half of battery.

+1 Please tell us! I'm using Fresh 3.2.0.0 with the kernel it comes with. I text a lot, and use the internet a lot. I have WeatherBug updating, run gps most of the time (not for Maps, but other stuff) and get maybe 10 hrs of use before I'm down to 20% or less, depending on how much talking I do. I know I could do better if I shut off gps and locations...Oh, yeah, and I have this app, Craigsnotificator running. It downloads craigslist stuff every 15 min...

do you have to be running the baked Rom in order to use its kernel?

There are a few features that the iPhone has Android beat in. The overall smoothness of the scrolling is better. Pinch to zoom also has a nice smooth effect. I like how Apple makes all of their icons the same shape and size where as Android icons are all over the place. And of course the camera and overall polish is better.

If you download baked snack 1.7 from Hero's thread it comes default with kernel 6 which is what I use. I also use other tweaks to get long battery such as spareparts end button behavior when go to sleep, ultimate juice (or juice defender), and setCPU with a 245/245 screen off profile.
I used my phone light to moderate for my last charge and got around 50 hours and for my current charge I have been using it moderate to heavy and am at around 30 hours with 34% battery left.
Oh I also use craigslist notification.

A little background, I'm an owner of both and do work in UX/Design/Marketing. That said, overall, they both have positives and negatives but if I were to do a check list, I'd put more positives on the iPhone 4 side.
The user experience in iOS 4 is way ahead of Froyo. There's really no argument here. The EVO w/ Sense was almost intolerable to me. But once I flashed the EVO w/ CM/AOSP, it felt a WHOLE LOT BETTER. Not as good as iOS 4 but definitely good enough. I'm confident that Gingerbread/3.0 will take a huge step towards matching the UX/UI; so as long as I'm on AOSP, I'll be satisfied. But like I said, iOS is just better right now. This also applies to 3rd party apps.
Hardware wise, the GPU in the EVO is a major let down. The back camera on the iPhone 4 seems to be a little better and the front camera is SIGNIFICANTLY better (all despite being smaller MP-wise). The actual display also seems better with the exception that I prefer the 4.3" size of the EVO. In terms of build, the iPhone 4 feels and looks better. And the battery is heck of a lot better on the iPhone 4, but you can make an argument that it doesn't matter since I can generally get more use out of the EVO since I always carry a spare charged battery. Overall, the iPhone 4 is better hardware-wise; and if it was ~4.3", it'd be damn near perfect. Of course the antenna issue is very, very real; and in my case it's way too easy to drop the signal.
So why do I have a EVO? The size is NICE. I also have a huge dependence on Gmail + Google Voice, and you can't beat the integration of both services on Android. Lastly, 4G tethering. I regularly get 6-9 Mbps out of Sprint's WiMax (though I get a respectable 4Mbps w/ the iPhone 4). It's just too bad that I have to nandroid back to Sense for that. Overall though, the EVO is a solid phone that I think will start to take away my attention from the iPhone 4 when Gingerbread finally drops.

The user experience in iOS 4 is way ahead of Froyo. There's really no argument here. The EVO w/ Sense was almost intolerable to me. But once I flashed the EVO w/ CM/AOSP, it felt a WHOLE LOT BETTER. Not as good as iOS 4 but definitely good enough. I'm confident that Gingerbread/3.0 will take a huge step towards matching the UX/UI; so as long as I'm on AOSP, I'll be satisfied. But like I said, iOS is just better right now. This also applies to 3rd party apps.
Hardware wise, the GPU in the EVO is a major let down. The back camera on the iPhone 4 seems to be a little better and the front camera is SIGNIFICANTLY better (all despite being smaller MP-wise). The actual display also seems better with the exception that I prefer the 4.3" size of the EVO. In terms of build, the iPhone 4 feels and looks better. And the battery is heck of a lot better on the iPhone 4, but you can make an argument that it doesn't matter since I can generally get more use out of the EVO since I always carry a spare charged battery. Overall, the iPhone 4 is better hardware-wise; and if it was ~4.3", it'd be damn near perfect. Of course the antenna issue is very, very real; and in my case it's way too easy to drop the signal.

Sense can be overwhelming for simple people, but in no way shape or form is iOS better than Android, sorry. The reason the user experience is ahead of it is because its so dumbed down. No options, no configuration, no multitasking, wifi-only video chat, antenna issues, proximity issues.. of course battery last more, the phone does less. And how on Gods earth are you getting 4mbps? I call BS on that one... Battery? I get approximately 24 hours of moderate use on stock 2.1 (give or take). Then again theres no signal in my home so im sure it would be 30+ hours if my signal was strong at home.

Your wrong on a lot of this. UI/UX is subjective.. but I think I have a bit more experience in that field than you. Sense was badly designed, don't agree? Fine, but you'll find it hard to find a professional who disagrees. No multi-tasking? Seriously, where have you been? Multi-tasking is there, and although just semi-introduced to Froyo, the old push notifications are a whole lot better than the battery sucking syncing that Android has. WiFi only video chat? Ever heard of Fring? Yeah, it's on iOS too. Antenna issues, brought it up. 4Mbps, um, HSPA. It's very obvious that you've never used a iPhone 4.

I gotta disagree with you there. Using any custom kernel on the forums here and LauncherPro, scrolling through screens and the browser feels smoother than the iPhone.
Pinching and zooming is still rough though. And I do agree about the icons. IPhone, aesthetically is supierior, in terms of symetrics. Lol

... I find that hard to believe. I'm using BS 1. 7 with kernel 6 and with moderate to heavy use I got about 10 hours. Do you have like.. NO widgets? Have it turned off most the day? LOL. Sorry, but 50hrs? Really? You have got to be using a 3500mah battery.

Ha Ha Ha! I lol'd at the push notifications on iOS are better than Android? Think again. Everyone knows the iPhone has the WORST notifications system in the history of phones. It uses a decent amount of power too. Android's syncing isn't all that power consuming, if you set it up right. Push email is about the same on both platforms in terms of power. Sense might not be all that great, but I'll take it over iOS. Seriously, the iPhone homescreen SUCKS. There's absolutely nothing to it. Its just a grid of icons. That shouldn't even be considered design. Anyways, glad to hear someone else's take, but iOS isn't all that great and Android has it beat in a lot of areas, just not out of the box user simplicity. Give someone an Android for a week though, and they'll be running laps around an iPhone power user.

Typical fanboy. Sense = personal opinion... it's SOMETHING compared to iPhone's plain black background (wait you can change it now) but I don't use sense anyway. HSPA, you would be the first person i've ever heard of reaching these speeds, but then again I don't follow AT&T's horrible network. Multi-tasking? Semi-introduced in Froyo? Are you high? Let's not get into that as we both know it really does not exist on the iPhone. Fring... eh i'll give you that, completely forgot about it, but for the sake of arguing if you don't know about it and you're the typical user, you won't hear it about it and are stuck on wifi-only chatting to only other iPhones. Btw, all my syncs happen once a day and all my notifications still come in as they arrive, I don't see a reason why anyone needs anything syncing every 15 minutes.

I agree, sense may not be great, but ill take sense over iOS most days. Gimme vanilla with LauncherPro and ill never look twice at iOS. Apple has such a strangle hold on the market that its counter productive. They ate stifling innovation by having an iron grip on developers, and their ability to release pretty much anything and have the mainstream fall over itself to get one.. no matter how flawed.. is nausiating.

Camera
Camera is the biggest things for me. I compared it to a friends IP4, and he scored a win.. Evo keeped showing blurry faces when people moved around. so disappointing esp when it comes to important moments in your life. IPhone 4 is a good phone, after I got hands on I was impressed, GUI of Iphone still looks and feels like the first gen Iphone.. boring.. I might switch to the EPic

What are you talking about? It's obvious that you to don't know what is being discussed. We're talking about cloud based notifications. Let me give you a simple example. On Facebook you can set it to poll data, say, every 15 minutes. So every 15 minutes the Facebook app will use bandwidth/power to check for updates that might not even be there. What iOS has done, and what Android will soon do too, is that it has a server where services like Facebook can ping to notify it that there are new updates, that server then pings the user back and downloads the new data. So you basically get instant notifications only when there is new data to download. This not only saves battery but also gives you near real time notifications.
It's a shame what this discussion has turned into. I look at things objectively, and I can't believe how emotional everybody has gotten over this. I broke my first EVO and bought my second one for full retail. You really thinking I'm some kind of biased fanboy?
I was working on a ton of things for the EVO, including a theme that vastly improves the appearance of HTC Sense but now I'm thinking about keeping it private. If this is how the XDA community really is, I'm probably best off doing that.

A quick last response, and my last in this thread.
Multi-tasking works just about the same in iOS as it does in Froyo. Look up the architecture/APIs and see for yourself. What was semi-introduced to Froyo is cloud based notifications. You argument about fring can be said about Android too. HSPA certainly reaches those speeds, and to be honest, I didn't realize it until I started testing the speed of my EVO/4G. Take care my friend. Hopefully one day you can become a fan of good tech instead of imaginary lines.

Agree.....agree....agree. 4mbps.....I wanted to wait to see who called BS on that one. Maybe on WiFi. Never over the network did I see speeds even CLOSE to that (and I understand the IP4 has such significant upgrades to it that the bottleneck loosens a bit, but THAT much as compared to 3g...i don't know).
After 2 years of using the 3g I can say I got tired of it after 1. Way too dumbed down. Android DOES what Iphone 2-3-4 can't do....out of the box.
Root your Android....there is just simply no comparison. Retina display? Over......size and close resolution? I don't understand higher resolutions on a tiny screen anyhow.
It is a pretty phone....the IP4. Ill give ya that, and overall pretty good, but there is a reason android is gaining in market share and IP4 is loosing its 54%. There are several reasons (all hugely valid) in fact, but Ill let someone else list those....i'm rambling. All of this rambling is just from a prior AT&T user who got tired of the charging for an addiction to something that is, overall, and inferior drug. So, now, I get my better drug from a different dealer......unlimited...and at a cheaper price.

All Evo Shift 4G owners please read and respond

I am looking at purchasing a Shift 4G for my mom to upgrade her from her POS blackberry. I currently have the Big Brother to the Shift (the Supersonic), and absolutely love it, I won't give it up for anything, but my mom would be more suited to an iPhone, however sprint doesn't have the iPhone, and I get a 23% discount through my job.
Could several people respond about the Shift please:
1. Average battery life (moderate usage)
2. Size and Feel of the phone for day to day use
3. How does the keyboard feel for texting
4. How smooth does this redesigned Sense OS feel
5. How well does the camera operate
6. Does the screen size feel ok if you use the touchscreen instead of the slideout KB.
I would prefer non-rooted people to respond to these since I won't be rooting her phone. I want to hear all responses both good, and bad.

I have my phone rooted but nothing major done to it..even rooting it was easy under the right posts and take from here and there and waa laa it worked great, however; i love this phone..a lot..my first android was a G1 and second a Hero(CDMA) and now this..I have been trying to find something more like the G1..The hero felt like a downgrade and now this phone excites me about the new frontier of android. I OC'd my hero with no avail and to be out performed by phones like the droid and ah whatever..it seems to me this phone is the benchmark of performance and as for your questions:
1. I feel as though I get about 12 hours..when I use it to play games and stuff maybe 6-8
2. I enjoy the keyboard..both physical KB and onscreen..I use both cause I came from a hero with no physical kb but i really like both
3. both KB's work great on texting..i prefer the physical for when I have longer messages to write because its faster IMO, even so the virtual has no lag either.
4. Compared to the Sense UI from the Hero this phone is a HUGE improvement..when I first got my phone I was really impressed with the improvements to the UI because it seemed HTC logged on XDA and got all of our gripes then fixed them
5. I finally used the camera this weekend to take pictures for making invitations to my son's birthday party and I was impressed with the facial recognition. Its 5MP so its no Cannon or Sony but it still does a great job with facial recognition and all
6. As I said earlier I use both and the I have no problem with the screen size interfering with the kb..

The phone feels perfect in your hand. Almost like your holding something other than a phone. The sense UI is great, very smooth and fast. The camera also is great. The still picture quality could be improved if you want to be nit picky, however 720p recording is so amazing. The hardware keyboard is very nice and fast as well. I like it better than my blackberry tour. I would recommend this phone to anyone, anyplace, anytime.

I also have evo, and also was considering picking up a shift for my mom (she has a Samsung moment that is barely functional), I went into sprint store and was able to play with one just a little bit. Was not that impressed, sadly (and I'm a big HTC fan).
Mostly, I felt the HW keyboard was almost unusable (I kept mashing multiple buttons at the same time), yet the HW keyboard is what I thought was supposed to be the attraction to otherwise would-be evo buyers.
As for OP 'wanting others to do his research for him', that's not the case at all, he wants to hear from people who have had more than just a few moments with the shift. Give the guy a break.

I ordered the Shift ready to exchange it for an Evo at the drop of a hat if I didn't like it, but after a while I'm really happy with this phone. It really doesn't get enough credit for how good it is.
The battery life is good enough that I can use it for moderate-heavy use of texting and internet and still have 1/4 of the battery left at the end of the day. I haven't ever used the 4G though, and I imagine that would change things up.
I came a from a Hero, and the Shift is slightly thicker and taller. It feels pretty sturdy, similar to a Droid. If you're looking for iPhone aesthetic you might be disappointed here.
Not a big fan of the keyboard, or keyboards in general really, so I can't really judge this. I find myself using the on-screen KB most of the time, and it works great. If you're curious, the sliding mechanism is the same used in the Droid and not like the G2's snap out hinge. Definitely prefer this, as the keyboard usually stays shut.
As it happens I don't really like Sense either, but it seems to operate the same as it did on the Hero (and probably the Evo.) It's fast and the widgets are cool, so if you like Sense then I guess you'll really dig it. Myself, I'll take Launcher Pro any day.
The camera is really excellent for a phone. Pictures are taken as fast as an iPhone and saved to your SD before you know it. Image quality isn't amazing and the flash function is sorta just there, but this is to be expected.
I'm really happy with this phone. While I would have preferred a Shift without a keyboard, I'm not at all bothered.

I don't have the time to give a lot of info, but I was really surprised last night.
My phone had been unplugged for almost 24 hours, with average (working most of the day) not heavy as normal usage, and i still had 40% battery left.
Coming from the Moment, this phone is so amazing. And even after seeing how my girlfriend's rooted Evo works, it's still pretty amazing.

I have gone to the store and played with it, I have had my mom check it out as well, she said it seemed ok, I thought it felt like crap, the slider was stiff, the screen didnt rotate to adjust for the keyboard being kicked out. I had these issues with it on 3 different display models at 2 different stores (one sprint store, one best buy), Which is why I asked the new shift community to chime in, if it was left up to my impression at the store, i would say the phone is a piece of **** that shouldn't be sold to consumers. However I doubt that is the case, and I wanted feedback from people who already own one.

the slider is stiff in the store probably due to the protective plastic still being around the keyboard. Otherwise it's very nice (except mine, which is really loose).
The screen rotates just fine when the keyboard is opened. It takes a half-second, but it rotates on all screens, except perhaps the facebook app.
I would actually say this phone is similar build quality to the evo, if not better. It's also the smaller form, which many people like. Not to mention the fact that it has more potential to be OC'd and if the dev's can figure it out, the potential to be a major powerhouse.

*sarcasm* No of course I haven't *sarcasm*, however I don't think you have, the first 7 pages of this 11 page subforum are filled with people complaining about broken hinges, bad sliders, charging problems, ect... which is why I put this thread up, I want to see the positive feedback, I want a reason to buy this phone as a gift for my mother. Generally the praise is left out of the forums, and the help me this is Borked takes over. I Love HTC phones, and as I am sitting I don't have a good reason to select this phone for her or go el cheapo and get her an optimus or an intercept.

First off, I think the EVO is a solid device...one of the few on Sprint.
I really like the EVO Shift better. It has a 2nd generation processor in it so it's slightly faster than the regular EVO w/being on a stock rom. I have not done it but heard it's a beast running the modified over clocked kernel.
Keyboard does get some getting used to, and I find myself using the on-screen keyboard for short text messages and the hardware keyboard on longer emails. HTC is know for durability and extended life (compared to other *cough* Kyocera) so I'm not too worried about the keyboard being extended.
I love to hate Sense UI...there are some features that are amazing and other's that just...well, yack.
The volume key's are always getting in my way, but I just have to "de-program" myself and get used to it. I've only had the Shift for a couple days, so I'll let my body catch up.
Did I mention how fast this device is? That is...even running stock!
I haven't heard it mentioned but I think the battery cover is a nuisance and feels cheap. If I had to do a sliding scale scoring on this device, without any industry experience, I would give it a 8/10 - from a consumer review

Yeah going from a moment to a shift is, form factor wise, about the same so there wouldn't be much to adjust to operating differently besides no cursor button.
Knowing what I do now, if I couldn't afford a top tier phone and monthly bill, I'd go with the little LG. People are giving it very good ratings on sprint's site.
With the screen not going landscape, maybe in screen settings it was turned off. Plus people probably install all kinds of crap on the display phones it bogs it down and lags terribly.
