i just got the HTC Hero for sprint last week, its already rooted
im wondering what cool things i can do with it, and if it will be getting froyo officially or am i going to have to wait for the AMAZING GODS of XDA to port it over ?
All I can say is read, read and read some more. You'll learn more that way. Start with the sticky at the top that says guides, tutorials, and Q&A. You most definitely want to search prior to asking any question because more than likely its been answered. Welcome and congrats on getting the Hero.
froyo will not come officially but the devs are actively working on it, I'd say the froyo roms right now are 80% ish, you can now overclock, and I recommend darchdroid 2. 7

yea i just saw the twitter update, and darchhero runs 2.2??

Right now, there IS a froyo rom available. The only big things not working are GPS and Camera.
Really now....that's a problem though I'm a high driver with no camera, so I use my camera a lot, and I usually forget how to get back from where I started, so that could be an issue

Try regawMOD, and then flash the darch kernal for honeybun. Just grab setCPU or the overclock widget from the market after that.
The first boot will take some time. Also I use it because I really like sense.

DarchDroid is where it's at.
What is the best and most stable (more importantly) ROM out there for the epic, based on user experience?
I like midnight 5.3 but its all preference if you want stability go with stock ec05 plus

Don't forget Frankenstein as well
But really, do try them all and just see which one you like best and works best for your phone.
this is what you need
best answer for you bub the post above me qbking77 start there how to root without a computer then learn how to odin then after you can fix what ur eventually going to semi brick or boot loop or wierd black screens that some ppl have never seen (qb) lol then get ur self a rom that u like and works for u what i like or qbking like maybe be different my phone never makes a noise till it rings so i dont need a rome with lots of sounds some roms dont work all the way then there r kernels well one step at a time............................ just go to you tube and get ready to get hooked
then
modems and themes ( i recomend darkis nebula) then ur goona say i want to try it there is a whole sticky for that but 1 thing that was told to me DO NOT post on the devs side of this read look dont post chance r what u post has been anserwed here on the general section word to the wise but you can do what u want

I don't really think there's a such thing as best rom. Some may be more popular than others, but my two favorite are simply aosp and srf v1.1.1.

If you don't care much about bluetooth, and 4g. Id say give CM7 Alpha a try. I feel like I'm in a whole new world after installing that rom after using every rom available! Except simply asop(cm7 clone)/ which I'm getting ready to test here in just a second when its done downloading!

Simply aosp is the next best thing to cm7 IMO. Never have problems on it, something always ends up breaking at some point or another with the other roms. For me anyways.

I like SRF 1.1.1. Never tried anything else because it worked so good when I started with 1.1.0.
If you are on EE03 GB for me, the more stable ROM is anonymous V6. This guys have tried to fix most of the bugs from Swiss Cheese and more. V7 will be even more stable when they release it soon. I 100% recommended it if you guys want to try GB. Is Still a work in progress, but still very reliable.

Haven't found a really stable custom rom yet. I'm back on stock, forcing myself to wait for the Sprint Gingerbread update release.
As others have said, try some, the beauty about being rooted and having the ability to flash custom ROM's is you can change as often as you want. No harm in flashing one, trying it out for a day or 2, flashing something else for a couple days... experiment until you find the one that you personally like best. Enjoy
We only have eight roms find the one that works best for you lol. I've been on SFR since release and currently have it paired with th Genocide kernel with great results. Just make sure to enable journaling.

i run the same set up
and this is my quad
Here is a writeup of the setup I use on my phone, includfing the additional mods.
For me, the theme is the most important part, as most ROMs are pretty close to each other (except asop & cm7)
My fav setup on my Moment came from when I built my own collection from all the development pieces, so I figured I would start my collection for the Epic as well
EXT4 is a standard for me now, so after stock flashing to stock EC05, the next step is to add:
Clockwork Mod 3.0.0.6 or Clockwork Mod 3.0.2.5
Next is my base EC05 ROM, currently I am using SyndicateROM Frozen
I will probably stay with this ROM until CM7 is fixed, or a Frankenstein version is released
My FAV theme has finally been updated, here is the link to it: Honeycomb Fusion 1.1 / Addons!
Next is custom apps, I simply love the transparent MMS app, it is a themed versions of stock, and is good enough I don't need any other version: Transparent Messaging App Collection (EC05,EB13,DK28)
Then I found a transparent dialer in the thread for Erebos! Slick, Professional theme in post number 6
Another must have app, though it comes with the ROM, is WiFi Tether (ver 3.0-pre11) as it works to connect my Moment to my Epic via WiFi. Here is a link to the download page for the latest version
Added the ADW Ex Launcher, and while I still prefer LP, I am gonna keep it because the Black Glass 1.7 Theme makes my App drawer transparent!

Does anybody have a copy of ComRom 2.1 for the Fascinate they would be willing to share?Since multi upload went down I haven't been able to find a working link for it or any themes. Also if anyone has ukb 50 I would really appreciate it.My SD was recently corrupted and I lost all my Roms.

May I ask why you want to run such a outdated rom?
Because I enjoy it.I honestly don't see why everyone's hung up on the latest thing.Latest doesn't always necessarily mean greatest.I enjoy ComRom and I subscribe to the adage if its not broke don't fix it.

No problem, hope it works for you. Personally, I'd run a GB+ ROM at this point, but to each their own. I'm on ICS AOKP build 25 myself, for today anyways. Tomorrow it could be the next newest thing, or back to CM7, or a GB TW ROM. The nice thing with the TW based builds such as ComRom/Superclean is that they just work, unlike a lot of the AOSP builds that all have their own quirks.

I hear that. I travel fairly regularly for work as well. I'll normally run my flavor of the week, just to see how it holds up. If it's not solid and reliable, then I'll roll back to something that is. A reliable GPS is a must, as most of the places I travel to are new to me. I'm anxious to see how this latest ICS build holds up on my next trip.

Nope, no themes, sorry. The CM7 I've been using is makelegs' build since the official nightlies shut down. For CM9, it's been JT & sbrissen's build. I haven't tried the latest version there yet though, so I can't comment on it. The ricks port of AOPK 25 has been running well for me. I had the non-working wifi in build 22, but it seems solved in build 25.

After our conversation about ComRom I decided to give AOKP another whirl and I must say I'm impressed. My last attempt at running it was full of reboots and data drops but it must have been a bad download because it ran smooth all night. In any event I switched back to ComRom this morning with Detox theme.Once again,I appreciate all your time and effort.

I didn't know. I tend to stay out of the XDA drama and try my best to avoid it altogether. Sadly this also means that I lose track of where devs go after they inevitably get pissed off and leave. No idea why the Samurai guy left, but I am sure it was chock full of drama. I did like his kernel before it stopped showing up here.
I thought that the info was needed. And after 24 hour of it being up it only showed 72 downloads and I figured if I let others know that it was up that others would enjoy it again. And some others don't prowl sites like I do and wouldn't have kept going back there. I do hope this is helpful for others and seeing as his forums don't seem to have activity it might be nice to have a place where you can check to see about issues and other results .

It wasn't meant to benifit us it was meant to help him so other can compile their own kernel. It uses his repo and you pull from it and using the helper you compile it for either cm9 cm7 miui tw bml/mtd and miuiv4. This will do everything you compile whichever and it will put a samurai.zip in your out folder and youllhave a flashable kernel. I'v been using Samurai kernels for a while now, the best battery life I ever saw was on Marcusants ROM with an early samurai kernel. It seemed like they worked out better in the past, I would get 2 days and some hours with no UV. I cant for the life of me remember what scheduler/governor combo I was using. Last night I charged my phone to 100% and let it sit over night. Found it with 18% battery left this morning. idk whats changed over the months, maybe CM9 is just more battery hungry than our old GB roms. I will try the VR/ Conservative and see how long it lasts.

well im officially gonna take over my fiance's laptop to build from sources among other fun stuff.
ive been looking around and noticed it i build a asop kernel it would still only be a 2.2.2 kernel. would cm6 be something we would like to see? ive also been hitting up the devs at UWT to see if possible to make the mods to build a gb kernel to cm7 and on.
i ask these questions cause i wont be the only one using em.

I'm not too concerned about cm, unless it's 7, or higher. 6 wasn't particularly great, from what I've heard. And, if you/we can figure out how to bake the call to ticker api into it. A custom kernel, for no other purpose than over clock and custom boot animations would be awesome. That and true scripting ability, instead of having to use init.d as a backdoor. If you decide to work on it, let me know how I can help.

I'm with Tx on this. Surprisingly, I'm content with my phone right now. I would like to change my lock screen, but as far as the ROM, it's running smoothly and I don't think CM6 would be any better of an experience for me. CM7 would be nice, but I've already convinced myself our phone will never get gb so it's no big deal.
I would enjoy changing my boot animation though, so I'm all for a custom kernel! Between you and trailblazer, my phone is now what it should have been when released by Samsung and Verizon. Thanks for all the work!
Cm7 is possible. I used it on my gf (hauwei) phone (begore i400) built up from eclair. I didn't do it but it was accomplished. Buggy though. I would rather have functionality over all the fuss though. I'm still on it

How long does it usually take to build a kernel? Sounds like a great plan.
It would be great to see some updates in kernels. Being able to over or underclock or change boot animation would be fantastic. Last phone was OG droid which was easy as he'll to flash kernels, ROMs, boot animations, and over/underclock. I miss that part of it but don't miss alot of the bugs, and lack of RAM with it. This phone does run much better and am happy with it at this point.

I think cm6 would be awesome! Yea its not cm7 but at least its something different. I know there's not alot of devs on the continuum but I think having something different than all these plain roms coming out would be nice, Not trying to sound like a hater or anything.
I'm not that great at developing or anything like that yet but if we got cm6 would that mean we'd have a greater chance at getting cm7?

i believe so too, time pending.
Vanilla Froyo
im trying to build aosp FROYO kernel/rom. starting there before i try to go up.
i see in the .config file where the ticker is and screen res. but source is huge and has stupid (not stupid) code names. ours is "garnett". yet in the menu config for kernel there are device options to build for "garnett_delta" and another i can remember off head. we are also in need of a working [initramfs], i found them once in our sources but i have already started from scratch 4 or 5 times. i had one successful compile yet no output. my next attempt will be tonight and since have gotten only a few errors that ive looked into but dont understand.
Update (patch) Kernel
from what i have read i can try and update the kernel itself to a 2.6.32.59
and have read in order to update to a 2.6.35 (GB)+ i would have to downgrade (or start?) from 2.6.32 (linux sources only go back to 2.6.32.25 or something (this option would take me awhile to just read about lol)
