[A] We REALLY want a kernel built from source! - Continuum General

Update: 09.06.12
So yeah, um more info to come this weekend.
OG OP:
hey all long time no OP...
well im officially gonna take over my fiance's laptop to build from sources among other fun stuff.
ive been looking around and noticed it i build a asop kernel it would still only be a 2.2.2 kernel. would cm6 be something we would like to see? ive also been hitting up the devs at UWT to see if possible to make the mods to build a gb kernel to cm7 and on.
i ask these questions cause i wont be the only one using em.
just wanted to pick yall brains for a min,

I'm not too concerned about cm, unless it's 7, or higher. 6 wasn't particularly great, from what I've heard. And, if you/we can figure out how to bake the call to ticker api into it. A custom kernel, for no other purpose than over clock and custom boot animations would be awesome. That and true scripting ability, instead of having to use init.d as a backdoor. If you decide to work on it, let me know how I can help.

I'm with Tx on this. Surprisingly, I'm content with my phone right now. I would like to change my lock screen, but as far as the ROM, it's running smoothly and I don't think CM6 would be any better of an experience for me. CM7 would be nice, but I've already convinced myself our phone will never get gb so it's no big deal.
I would enjoy changing my boot animation though, so I'm all for a custom kernel! Between you and trailblazer, my phone is now what it should have been when released by Samsung and Verizon. Thanks for all the work!

Cm7 is possible. I used it on my gf (hauwei) phone (begore i400) built up from eclair. I didn't do it but it was accomplished. Buggy though. I would rather have functionality over all the fuss though. I'm still on it

How long does it usually take to build a kernel? Sounds like a great plan.

It would be great to see some updates in kernels. Being able to over or underclock or change boot animation would be fantastic. Last phone was OG droid which was easy as he'll to flash kernels, ROMs, boot animations, and over/underclock. I miss that part of it but don't miss alot of the bugs, and lack of RAM with it. This phone does run much better and am happy with it at this point.

I don't use the continuum much these days but would glady test anything and help where I can
And on a side note... I was thinking about ICS on the continuum (i have a rezound)
I was thinking if you outed the ticker completely the softkeys could take its place and the launcher would have the grey bar through... I have absolutely no idea what any of that would involve or how to go about doing it but I can dream dammit!

I think cm6 would be awesome! Yea its not cm7 but at least its something different. I know there's not alot of devs on the continuum but I think having something different than all these plain roms coming out would be nice, Not trying to sound like a hater or anything.
I'm not that great at developing or anything like that yet but if we got cm6 would that mean we'd have a greater chance at getting cm7?

i believe so too, time pending.
Vanilla Froyo
im trying to build aosp FROYO kernel/rom. starting there before i try to go up.
i see in the .config file where the ticker is and screen res. but source is huge and has stupid (not stupid) code names. ours is "garnett". yet in the menu config for kernel there are device options to build for "garnett_delta" and another i can remember off head. we are also in need of a working [initramfs], i found them once in our sources but i have already started from scratch 4 or 5 times. i had one successful compile yet no output. my next attempt will be tonight and since have gotten only a few errors that ive looked into but dont understand.
Update (patch) Kernel
from what i have read i can try and update the kernel itself to a 2.6.32.59
and have read in order to update to a 2.6.35 (GB)+ i would have to downgrade (or start?) from 2.6.32 (linux sources only go back to 2.6.32.25 or something (this option would take me awhile to just read about lol)

I think there may be a way to get FROYO/Gingerbread on Fascinate

Ok I was thinking to myself & reading through all the forums & thinking the only thing stopping us from rocking out froyo/Gingerbread action on are samsung Fascinate's is the kernel issue right ?
off the beaten track but need to read to understand the train of thought:
Well being a former 2 week droid X owner & me being the modder I am I rooted it & as many of you Know the droid X has a locked bootloader but that has not stopped a well known android developer by the name of Jrummy to Develop a app to Overclcok the Droid X even with the locked bootloader but still the system is reading that the phone is still running a 1ghz speeds
Main Idea :
Well I was thinking why cant a more experienced dev than myself as I just started out as a developer a more experienced dev develop a app along the same lines to trick are fascinates into running Froyo/Gingerbread roms but still using the kernel we currently are using I am guessing the kernels might need to be tweaked but I think this is possible I believe if a more experienced dev contacted Jrummy he would give the source code to them to develope off of I am not sure but pretty sure he has it @ GITHUB

Actually he is half right. Punk.kaos currently has froyo and ginger running on the eris? He also apparently had froyo booting on the fascinate as well. And there is no source for the eris for either? Any clarification on this would prove to be very educational for all....
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
It's a nice thought, and one day we might see it. One thing is YES GB as well as FROYO have been seen booting on the Galaxy S phones but they have been GSM based phones not Verizon CDMA phones which have a totally different system writes.
Best bet would be to check on the IRC channels and see whats going on there, and see how things progress, great idea but not anytime in the near future, welcome to Samsung.
Cheers.

I came from the eris to the fascinate, and yeah there are now a ton of eris roms running froyo on the 2.6.29 kernel. And as I understand it, kaos is also working on gingerbread for the eris as well, and has a gb rom running (tho it still has problems). But to get to the point where the eris is at now, as far as it being able to run froyo perfectly with no bugs or glitches, it took a pretty long damn time. Its not nearly as simple as fooling the system into thinking that we're running a 2.6.32 or .35 kernel, unfortunately. There were tons of things that didnt work at first. In fact, almost nothing worked at first. But kaos and the other devs kept at it, and with each new release, they'd fix 1 or more of those things broken. Of course, they had help from a bunch of hero devs that were simultaneously working on getting froyo to work on the cdma hero.
My point is, however, that our devs are already working on this, but right now there are still some huge issues that make the roms/kernels far from ready for public release. But there is no reason to fear, as the devs will continue to do their thing, and even if samsung puts off releasing froyo for another year, I promise you that before too long the devs will have found a way to give us what we want.. namely, froyo and gb!

Not looking too well anymore. Trying to find the correct kernel. I'm trying to use the Bonsai kernel but thats probably not compatible. Probably going to have to compile my own. It gets up to the SGTab 10.1 screen then reboots itself.

That could work, but at the moment I'm trying to rip the kernel from the SDK since the stock honeycomb and ICS kernel versions are different.
Btw, if any developer who knows what they're talking about wants to help me, shoot me a PM bro!
I can help to test when you have a decent beta ready.
Seems you should just wait for source and skip SDK ports. I think the Cyanogen team knows what they are talking about... Too much of a headache for poor performance.
I would love to be proved wrong... I'm not a dev, but I do develop apps and abhor using the sdk emulators. I also know the HC sdk port to the Nook Color never got off the ground. And that was a flexible device to work on...

Technically you can try to simulate what it will look like, but not until the source code is released will you have any functionality. It will still be 3.1

Looking for any devs/porters interested in HTC Sense

Hey guys. I have the Nexus S 4G port of HTC Sense. If anyone wants to help port it, post here and I'll PM you it. I shouldn't post the link here though because the dev hasn't released it yet, but QBKing77 gave me a preview copy. I'm trying to port too, but would appreciate any help.

Gave up on Sense for the Epic about a month ago...
Saw your post today and instantly send you a PM. Im willing to help in any way possible. Testing, I can help with some Kernel issues if any exist, and most importantly, emotional support for the trial and error process that comes with reconstructing the wheel by converting an entire file system... lol
There is still hope yet for our beloved EPIC 4G!
Also, I have an S2 I dont use so I can help with S2 issues as well.
Waiting patiently for your response!

No matter which kernel and file format I use it boot loops at the samsung screen. I've also replaced pretty much every file except the framework and app files. It doesn't boot far enough to get a logcat either.

May I ask why you want to run such a outdated rom?
Because I enjoy it.I honestly don't see why everyone's hung up on the latest thing.Latest doesn't always necessarily mean greatest.I enjoy ComRom and I subscribe to the adage if its not broke don't fix it.

No problem, hope it works for you. Personally, I'd run a GB+ ROM at this point, but to each their own. I'm on ICS AOKP build 25 myself, for today anyways. Tomorrow it could be the next newest thing, or back to CM7, or a GB TW ROM. The nice thing with the TW based builds such as ComRom/Superclean is that they just work, unlike a lot of the AOSP builds that all have their own quirks.

If it's not solid and reliable, then I'll roll back to something that is. A reliable GPS is a must, as most of the places I travel to are new to me. I'm anxious to see how this latest ICS build holds up on my next trip.

And....do you have any recommondations on a solid Cyanogen Rom?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
Nope, no themes, sorry. The CM7 I've been using is makelegs' build since the official nightlies shut down. For CM9, it's been JT & sbrissen's build. I haven't tried the latest version there yet though, so I can't comment on it. The ricks port of AOPK 25 has been running well for me. I had the non-working wifi in build 22, but it seems solved in build 25.

After our conversation about ComRom I decided to give AOKP another whirl and I must say I'm impressed. My last attempt at running it was full of reboots and data drops but it must have been a bad download because it ran smooth all night. In any event I switched back to ComRom this morning with Detox theme.Once again,I appreciate all your time and effort.

Yep, this new builds been running well for me so far. I've been happy with it. I'm glad I could help you out so you can get back up and running. I've done my (more than) fair share of downloading the great work that the dev's offer here. If my contribution is making a few of them available again for other to use, so be it.

[Q] Cyanongenmod for Continuum?

So the Continuum has no Cyanogenmod what so ever. And the Samsung Admire already has a CM7 like theme and it makes it look and run amazing. it's a newer phone and already has it. Think there is a chance of creating a CM7 for Continuum? Will using The Fascinate CM on Continuum work? How long does it take to create a CM?
Just noticed I messed up the name when asking the question. >.< My apologies.

It can be done I believe, we've talking about getting cm6 and ICS is definitely a possibility.

Hmm that's interesting. Has the making started or is it just planned for now?

I don't mean to be a killjoy but the probability of seeing ICS or CM on the Continuum is virtually zero.

I think that's entirely false. You guys have the hardware power to run ics easy! And if I could get ics on my locked down d2 you guys can get it on your unlocked continuum.

Lol! Like the use of my screen name ...but I think we can do it...I know how to port a cm rom to our device but I don't know if we would have to edit our kernal to run it...if we don't have to then I could put out a version of cm tonight

Any rom port you would have to intergrate the ticker screen into it somehow or mod kernel with out it. Id love to see your port tonight. My continuum service is off so ill beta. I couldn't get my aosp kernel and rom to boot, I'm having same probs with my new phone. Locked bootloader I believe but there is no real forum for the phone. Plus its gb and edify scripts ill have to learn.

What do you need for the kernel? I got it all. Initramfs is in zImage also. Got that too. So let me know

Hey Ciscoo!!
Like Cisco said, it isn't a matter of If or When, but rather it's How.
Our phone has one screen from the top to the bottom of the ticker. There lies the issues. There are no dedicated "Hard Keys", only soft keys located between the main screen and the ticker. The coding needed to not only insert the softkeys(it is already in other ICS builds), but to also position the keys correctly on the screen is very tough. Whether this is located within the kernel or in the framework, i am unsure of as well. To prevent going into to much detain, At one point in time i had the CM7 source downloaded and ready to start compiling and messing around, however the more research i did the more i realized i didn't have nearly enough experience, and eventually i put that project to the side.
Likewise, I now have a DroidX running CM9 and my continuum running debellare is so much faster and more stable that the X. My recommendation? Install one of the stripped down roms we have created, install one of CISCOES themes, and then if you want further mods, install a new launcher.
If you want more, open up the framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk; Get a smali decompiler and start looking inside.
Just compiling is much harder than you think.
If i remember correctly someone had moderate luck porting a Fascinate build over and running it. It ran, but didn't "work".
