My friend just got out of a sales meeting where they got to play with it.
it is coming July 15th behind a large marketing campaign. No pre-orders, at least not in store.
They will be offering early upgrades like ATT did for the iPhone to get more people to get it.
They're screwing current Droid owners, though. Check out the live blog from engadget... I can't link it because of some silly restriction so you'll have to google it.
You can only upgrade if your upgrade eligibility is up sometime in 2010, which means anybody that bought a Motorola Droid is screwed. I got mine on launch day and I gotta admit I'm pretty PO'ed I can't upgrade.
it will have 2.2 and cost $199

Screwed? Of course you got screwed. That's how technology works. It screws you over the month after you buy it. Btw, you screwed yourself over for signing a two year contract. By next year, they will have a Droid 3 and the year after that and etc.

Really? Did Verizon suddenly change the upgrade language of the contract you signed? If you can't think ahead before you sign a long term contract, you have no one to be upset with except yourself. Verizon didn't screw you, your short term "gotta have the best right now" attitude is what screwed you.
No one cares that you have buyers remorse. You ultimately have two choices - wait until you can upgrade at the reduced prices, or go ahead and buy a new phone at full price. You could always sell your existing phone if you choose option #2 to help take the edge off the full retail price.
You can complain about it all you want, but you won't gain any sympathy, and it won't change the choices available to you.
You can upgrade...ETF + sell phone + buy the new one. Yeah, it costs money...so do phones. In 3 months when new snap dragon processors hit the streets people with a droid-x will be complaining. Buy the phone for what it is, and don't get pissed that there is better things out there. Or, if it is a big deal, pay up. Verizon doesn't get these things for free you know.
Wow, couple of Verizon employees here maybe?....poor guy.

I am upgrading from the omnia too. This will be a much needed upgrade.
I'll be upgrading from the Omnia i910 as well... which ever store is open first on July 15th, either Verizon or cash in my Best Buy Pre-order. I've been cooking on the Omnia for about a year now and can't wait till the 15th. I'm a huge Linux nut and fairly fluent in Java... The future is bright for Android my friends. as far as using it on the mt? honestly im disappointed with it i never use the touchflo (which is the sense ui look) but i like the htc features so i just use those... sprint will have the real hero coming out this month if you want it that bad but if you dont care about speed and dont mind waiting at least a minute every time you hit the home key for it to load then go for it but its just too slow for me
**i must say i love the size of the mt3g its way slimmer than the tp2 and g1 which was a hugh plus for me and reason i still use it
Samsung Galaxy Lite.
There are 4-5 registered Android devices said to be dropping Q4 of this year for T-Mobile USA.
The MyTouch is fantastic. I have a G1 as a spare for development and testing. However, there will always be a growing trend with "the next best thing."
Keep in mind, there's a lot of this year LEFT to go. Keep your options open...open-source that is! HA!

He makes a valid point as well.
It just depends on what you can afford for the various data packages offered by the carriers.
My preference being: T-Mobile USA!
Fantastic service, loyal to them for almost 8 years now. Nothing but positive experiences with them.
Like I said though...the MyTouch is nice, but hold off...it could be worth it.

I am using a mytouch and love it. This is my first android phone and I don't think I will ever go back to windows mobile. These phones are more versatile and the interface is whatever you want it to be.
I don't use a hero ROM on it because I have heard too much about it being slow. I will wait for the optimized version to show up before trying that.
I was going to get the TP2 but the cost put me off. I am glad it was too expensive now. Showing off this phone to people at work has made 3 other people get an android phone.
I Dont know that holding off will do you any good.. I have seen the specs for the other droid phone that tmo us is supposed to get this year (well all of whats available) and honestly the mt3g is I think still the best one (assumeing you want a non keyboard slim phone)..
I know there is supposed to be some lower end ones coming out, but if you have the TP2 now I am guessing that doesn't really interest you..
Not that many of you will care seeing that my greatest contribution was the occasional answered question and quip with a slimmer of humor and once or two of Jameson.
I am getting my Nexus One on Tuesday, and will be parting ways with my beloved G1. Hope to see many of you on the other side sooner rather than later. I figured for once I would be on the front end instead of tail end of a technological advancement, and luckily I had the money too(thank you December commission check!).
This is me hating you. I looked forward to some of your posts
I will still stop by on a regular basis. Lots of good stuff and knowledge over here! Plus, what little I can do is help answer questions, and it would get kinda old answering the same n00b questions over and over again for the nexus... how do I root? What does root do? Did I brick? What does my phone not boot past the Hero logo, and just keeps repeating the HTC-->Hero thingy over and over, am I bricked yet or should I try flashing the Hero's SPL and then the Radio from the Droid first?

I am a hardware KB freak myself, but I got to test a N1 for 24 hours and found that I would be able to live. The onscreen is really, really good, and it has the speak to text stuff where all I gotta do is talk and it does the typing, and it does it extremely well!

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, NO!
Don't worry, I will tell you this much... up until the N1, the G1 was the best smart phone I had ever used, from BB 8900, 9700, to HTC Kaiser, Touch Pro, even the Touch Pro 2 did not live up to the G1, IMHO.
I sell cell phones for a living, and like to have a phone that I can use to not just enjoy using myself, but I can tell a customer to go get and they will find equal joy out of it. I used to carry a WM device for myself, then have to explain to everyone why I was selling them a BB... now I have my Android, my carrier has Android, and all is good! I will say, a BB does beat Android for those most hardcore business users that only do email, phone calls, and calendar... but anyone that wants a phone to do multiple solutions, heck move surf the web up the list from where it is with a hardcore business user, and there is no touching Android.
Android, as an OS, is IMHO the top smart phone OS hands down! And don't forget the G1 has damn good hardware... 528mhz CPU is still the gold standard. Sure, not as much RAM as we would all like, but it has a physical KB that is top notch!(one of the best I have ever tried). It has a good camera. It has a capacitive touch screen. Nice looks, IMO. Good battery life(subject to personal use, but just shy of a BB, and way better than any WM device).
Just wait, I am willing to bet money 2.X makes its way to the G1 officially.

Not really... I am a tester for the cell phone company I work for, so I get to test a lot of different phones. As well, when we do decide to carry a phone, I usually get to carry it for a week since I help write tip sheets.
Personally, I have owned a BB Pearl 8110, a BB Curve 8310, a BB Curve 8900, a HTC TyTNII, and a G1.

I will tell you this much, the best times with my TyTNII was when I started running Android on it... so I guess it would have to be the BB 8110! In seriousness, I could type faster on the 8110 than any other phone, hands down. My favorite has been the G1, until the N1 came across my desk, er kiosk... the verdict is still out, a little bit, but I am pretty sure I made the right call for my first brand new and up to date smart phone.

There will always be something better in another 4 months... actually, if history repeats itself, the next round of HTC Android will be this June with "mid grades" and then this fall with the "high end" ones. And what are the chances any of those will be for sale at the price of $530, brand new, unlocked, without contract?

I guess the Droid X will have Froyo installed at release .....
I'll be a salty dog if that phone gets the "offical" froyo before us N1 users....
I have the leaked 2.2 now and I love it. Half the reason I chose purchasing the N1 is because I love to be on the cutting edge of tech. I was under the assumption nexus one users would be getting those updates before others.
Personally, I am a bit disappointed we don't get periodic updates of early builds or experimental builds. Especially the unsubsidized users such as myself.
Before people bite my head off, telling me I should root my phone. I know, I should. I hacked the crap out of my old G1 and I waved the Cyanogen flag proudly. But, something about voiding the warranty on a $530 phone while currently having a cruddy power button doesn't appeal to me.
It'll be on the device, but when does it actually ship?
Well have it long before then.

Negative. Look at the home screen....see the little Android with the tips and pointers? That's new to FroYo.
yeah that looks like moto's version of 2.2 and it really pisses me off to see 2.2 on a device other than the Nexus.
I guess now we know what the wait has been for. Google could have had 2.2 out on the Nexus if they had wanted to, but it looks to me like the Nexus has ceased being a priority. We'll get 2.2, but it's obvious to me us Nexus owners are nothing but an afterthought to Google now.
Something tells me they'll debut the new moto phone, 2.2, flash all together. Start pre orders and deliver within a month (just like the past three major android devices).
With a footnote of :OTA being pushed to nexus on the same day, and all other phones depending on carrier.
That is some BS I might say... but I do not think google has overlooked us. We already have beta 2.2 on nexus one's already. I'm waiting for the official release.
They have a reason for the delay. They have to. And we aren't an "after thought", or "no longer a priority". The nexus one is Google's baby, even if they don't show it sometimes.
Wait
Be patient. Seriously guys.
We will still get it before any other released device...hang in there!

Motorola Blur / Android: We confirmed that the Droid X was running Android 2.1 with some new sort of Motoblur (perhaps Ninjablur) skin. We didn't get to configure Blur with our social networks and contacts, but it didn't seem as "in your face" as the original. There's also a new navigation bar along the bottom that lets you easily jump to different Android panes. We can't really make a call on how we feel about this new Moto skin, but it does feel like a major improvement and it absolutely didn't slow down performance. We should also mention that preloaded on the phone was a Blockbuster application and a DLNA type app. Those two pieces combined with the fact that there will be a separate HDMI dock available has us thinking multimedia is the focus here.

All you guys getting pissed at this...did you forget we all saw Froyo running on a N1 during the I/O?
It amazes me how so many people who are waiting for froyo conjure up these conclusion on why froyo hasnt been released yet without any hard facts backing it. It's a given the N1 owners will be the first to receive the official release. That photo with the little robot has nothing to do with the reason Froyo is not officially released yet. Cot dammit, its hasnt been released because its not ready yet lol! Why is it so hard for some people to digest that? froyo is a "Major" update to the OS, not a minor bug fix. Let google fix whats needed to be fixed so that we may have the best experience with Froyo lol.
In all fairness.. a lot of people with the n1 probably paid full price for the device.. 529$..
And I know for me.. part of why I don't mind paying that price is because, I will get the update first..... Its the price of an unlocked unsubsidized phone.. so we do have certain expectations..

Why would buying the phone unsubsidized give anyone a priority? It's not like we're paying more money for the things. I bought mine unsubsidized, and when I do the math I end up paying about $100 less then if I bought it on contract.

To be exact, I paid $580.00. I didn't pay that price to receive updates first. I paid that price for the features, and for a phone that is at least 95% glitch free! I'm thirsting for the update as well, but i want Google to take their time and make it right, because right now, the phone is not right with all the touchscreen issues going on!

I would say one good reason unsubsidized buyers should get priority is because, subsidized phones have to have "carrier approval" or some crap like that.
So If I'm paying for an unsubsidized phone.. I am paying so that my carrier does cripple, weaken and more or less castrate my phone..
As horrible as that is.. that is pretty much what it boils down to.. my carrier has a habit of butchering phones.. and well quite frankly..
If we pay money for a phone that is suppose to be "Google's Flagship Phone" especially coming from a carrier that butchers all of its own phone.. Then we expect to get what we paid for.. the updates first..
With that said.. I don't care whether froyo comes out now.. or in two months from now.. If I pay for a nexus one, I want the nexus one to get froyo before other people who happen to pay less for their phone..
So I hate my Hero, A, because it is slow, and B, because it is stuck on 2.1 forever. So I have been looking at the Evo and the Epic, and the other related phones, and here is my question, what is the support going to be like? I know that every time a new phone comes out, the manufacturers seem to forget about the old ones, and for no technical reason, the MyTouch 3G is getting Froyo after all. So one of the things I am looking at with my next phone is that it will be supported for the full two years, the Hero only made it 6 months, so I know that seems like a lot, but I honestly don't think it is too much to ask. If you sell a phone with a 2 year contract, you should support it for at least 2 years, as long as technically possible. So without a vanilla Android phone available on Sprint, which of the two phones do you guys think will be supported with updates longer? I have seen that sources close to Google said the Galaxy S phones will be upgraded to 3.0, but they didn't mention the EVO, even though it meets the spec requirements. Would it be waiting until the end of the year for whatever comes then? Or is just that buying me until December of next year instead of August? Thanks.
No phone will ever be supported for 2 years...some countries even have 3 year contracts as standards...The contract is unrelated to the phone you buy...
The manufacturer warranty is 1 year for all of them...past that you can't really expect them to issue updates for it...that is why we have a community...
You have to remember that the manufacturer is not earning money off your contract, only from the sale and if they have their apps in there, those as well...
The one who is forcing you into the contracts are the carriers...no matter how much you may think the US is a free open country..it is not...out of all the countries we have the most locking of phones and other things...
You are not forced to sign a new contract..you can always pay the full price of the phone up front..the contract just gives you a discount...
Ok, while I will admit all that you said is true, my example is the iPhone. Apple puts out a phone, and continues issuing updates for it, even you you are probably out of your 3G contract now, you can still upgrade to OS 4.0, you won't get all of the features, and it is debatable whether you should have those features, but at least you get part of the update. I don't understand why that can't happen on Android. Even the MyTouch 3G will have had support for over a year. The Hero on the other hand, got its first and only upgrade after about 6 months. Why can't we have some arrangement like that with a non-Google phone? I mean, just give me a full year of updates and I will be happy, if those updates are reasonably prompt, as with the EVO and Froyo. Will that continue with the EVO, or the Galaxy S when we move to Gingerbread?

Well iPhone is different..Apple actually gets paid a portion of your contract...not to mention all app revenue goes to them as well...
But in case of the Hero..it kinda came at a bad time...it was the point where the device specs skyrocketed and Android was moving fast in development..not to mention the Hero was already an out dated phone before it even came out..US was just slow at getting devices on the shelves...recently it seemed to have picked up..before it used to be 6 month - a year before it got in US shelves but was already all over the world...nowadays we get them 1-3 month or so...
Once 3.0 hits Android also slow down a bit in their release cycle...
Most likely you will get 1 year support around these days..and afterwards it will be community support for life ...
Maybe I am slightly bitter, especially that the poor Hero support came after my first HTC phone, the Touch Pro, broke on 4 separate occasions, the first two were within 30 days, so Sprint replaced it, but the 3rd time it took 3 weeks to send to HTC and get it back, after a maze of tech support calls. Then I upgrade to the Hero, and don't get supported.
But what you are saying all makes sense, so I hope either way we get more updates, even if they have to be delivered by the Dev community.

So does mine, thanks to Darchstar and all of his fellow developers. And I can't thank them enough for that, because if it weren't for them, I would have thrown this phone out of my car at high speed off a cliff long ago. But it shouldn't be up to developers to support a year old phone. Especially when it is obviously capable of running newer firmware. And because they don't officially support it, these 2.2 ROMs will never be as good as ones with the official HTC base.

Correct, I just think it is the right thing to do when you sell a phone. Support it for two years. Sprint pays HTC for the phone, and we pay Sprint for the phone and service, so it just makes sense that they Sprint should make sure their customers are supported for at least the two year contract whenever technically possible.
One year of support might be feasable. Htc doesn't want to waste resources supporting old hardware, sprint doesn't want you to reach end of contract. This is why they give upgrade pricing after one year in exchange for 2yr contract agreement. Android platform + this communit have given me the ability to keep a phone for 2yrs with minimal discomfort.

Wait a second... Why the heck would you EVER have to send the phone in to HTC? If it's under warranty, Sprint repair stores handle it for you. If there's no repair stores near you, care cross-ships you out a new (or refurb) phone. You shouldn't have to be without a phone for more than a day, max.

Because it was about 6 months after we bought it, and it we don't buy the warranties. So we called Sprint, and they told us that the only thing they would do is sell us a new phone for full retail, and specifically asked about a loaner or something, and they said that was only for people with warranties. They said the only thing we could do is send it to HTC, so that is what we had to do.
As a rebuttal, you can put 2.2 on a hero, and have everything work. I'm doing that now to get used to not having sense. Sure it doesn't top the charts and 3d games suck on it, but there are plenty 2d games on the market that work fine, you can watch movies that look and sound fine on it if you take the time to convert them properly. Plus, I haven't had any issues with lag, especially with the keyboard. The stock android one us much better than htc's ime.apk in that aspect. And it probably has to do with the haptic feedback. I typed this on my phone and it doesn't feel like a chore.

Thanks again gTen, and rufflez, I have already said how much I love the devs here and on other forums, and all the work they put into the platform, but the operating system is always the best when based on official kernels and and drivers. And it shouldn't be up to the community to support the devices after such a short time. They should improve on work done by the manufacturer, but they shouldn't be solely responsible for the device's advancements.
Alright so I apologize in advance if this is somewhere on the forum already, and seeing as Google is being uncooperative and giving me a great number of suspected US release dates I was just wondering if anyone had any inside info on when this godly phone will launch in Canada/with which carriers/what cost will be?
I'm finally off contract and wanna dump my POS BBerry Storm for it!
it doesn't matter, because once it's released in the US you can buy it unlocked online...
That would be great if I wasn't on a student's budget (engineering in ontario ain't cheap)

WOOO $8500 + books a year in tuition!
I'm so selling my Galaxy S for the S2. The S2 just looks like a very good upgrade over the first Galaxy S
I would LOVE to have the date, because I've been holding off upgrading my desire for a few months and would love for it to come to Telus (hopefully first!). But if not, I would have no problem jumping ship to Bell to get this beautiful marvel of technology!!

How about 38 grand a year in tuition... I have to get all my money from "recycling" my gadgets. Like buy a couple phones on contract, sell em off contract for a little extra profit and use the net gain to buy say a desktop or something. Or sell old desktop (old as in 6 months) and use that money to buy phone+laptop. Because of this cycle I don't have one computer or phone for more than 6 months at a time.
Hoping for Windmobile / MobilityCity to bring them into Canada
then we'll have the proper 1700+2100 version
the AT&T 850/1900 version is available for pre order already in many sites

Yea I wouldn't complain about under 10k/yr in tuition... that's a bargain even at state schools in the US.
Anyway, I'm just waiting for T-mobile's version so I can use it on WIND... I really don't want to have to switch to Bell/Telus/Rogers/Fido to be able to use the SGS2.

Unless somebody has some inside info, I'd just suggest watching Samsung Mobile Canada's Twitter feed.
Right now they are totally focused on the release of the Nexus S this week, so I wouldn't expect them to give a release date for the S II until that noise settles down.
Gah, can't wait. My old HTC Touch (running Android) is dying a little more each day. Almost useless now.

Actually, the latest builds people have cooked (and not with 1.5, 2.2.1!) actually run pretty damn smooth. It's come a long way. I have the Bell version of the touch which is at 400Mhz. I doubt the 200Mhz touch would be enjoyable, though.
In fact, I keep checking this forum for the latest SII news from the taptalk app. Some of the more demanding applications don't work very smooth (ex: the official twitter app with it's moving clouds background), and there always seem to be random bugs with different builds (no audio input for voice search or guitar tuners for example) but people are still, surprisingly, churning out more and more refined editions.
If it wasn't for the fact that the top button on my phone was broken (yeah, critical, I have to keep the phone's screen on and therefore the phone plugged in all the time, hence I can't for for the S II to come out!) it would be a pretty damn usable in most respects.
Can't wait for it either!!! But at the same time, in an effort to improve my Desire, I have endless hours of fun trying out new roms, exotic roms!! Hopefully this thing will come close to the kind of support that thing has...
Resisting the urge to "insert stupid random comment here"... I want to say everything in the HTC EVO Vs. iPhone 4 video only make the iPhone zombie want an SGS II (making him smart and saving someone's life!)
GUYS one of the reporters for mobile syrup spoke to the canadian samsung VP and confirmed a late Q2-early Q3 launch!!!
http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/04/14/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-coming-to-canada-by-early-q3/
I figure you will have to wait for the NS buzz to cool down and then they will pop this out of no where for the rest of the bunch that didnt get the NS.
You will see this in end June or July to fight the iPhone 5 release, IF Apple is releasing it in July, otherwise it will be Sept.
Either way I don't care... I want the SGS II, NS to me is old tech....

Eeeeech. End of June, early July? Sigh.
At least by then my full Bell contract will be over, so I can choose a different carrier if need be. Can't wait to get rid of this HTC Touch/Vogue.
