So Froyo this weekend or the 23rd of June ? - Nexus One General

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/15/motorola-verizon-announcing-next-generation-of-droid-on-june/
I guess the Droid X will have Froyo installed at release .....

I'll be a salty dog if that phone gets the "offical" froyo before us N1 users....
I have the leaked 2.2 now and I love it. Half the reason I chose purchasing the N1 is because I love to be on the cutting edge of tech. I was under the assumption nexus one users would be getting those updates before others.
Personally, I am a bit disappointed we don't get periodic updates of early builds or experimental builds. Especially the unsubsidized users such as myself.
Before people bite my head off, telling me I should root my phone. I know, I should. I hacked the crap out of my old G1 and I waved the Cyanogen flag proudly. But, something about voiding the warranty on a $530 phone while currently having a cruddy power button doesn't appeal to me.

It'll be on the device, but when does it actually ship?
Well have it long before then.

Why would Adobe be at the presser if it will be running 2.1u1?
Isn't the req. for flash 2.2?

Negative. Look at the home screen....see the little Android with the tips and pointers? That's new to FroYo.

yeah that looks like moto's version of 2.2 and it really pisses me off to see 2.2 on a device other than the Nexus.
I guess now we know what the wait has been for. Google could have had 2.2 out on the Nexus if they had wanted to, but it looks to me like the Nexus has ceased being a priority. We'll get 2.2, but it's obvious to me us Nexus owners are nothing but an afterthought to Google now.

Something tells me they'll debut the new moto phone, 2.2, flash all together. Start pre orders and deliver within a month (just like the past three major android devices).
With a footnote of :OTA being pushed to nexus on the same day, and all other phones depending on carrier.

That is some BS I might say... but I do not think google has overlooked us. We already have beta 2.2 on nexus one's already. I'm waiting for the official release.
They have a reason for the delay. They have to. And we aren't an "after thought", or "no longer a priority". The nexus one is Google's baby, even if they don't show it sometimes.
Wait
Be patient. Seriously guys.

We will still get it before any other released device...hang in there!

Motorola Blur / Android: We confirmed that the Droid X was running Android 2.1 with some new sort of Motoblur (perhaps Ninjablur) skin. We didn't get to configure Blur with our social networks and contacts, but it didn't seem as "in your face" as the original. There's also a new navigation bar along the bottom that lets you easily jump to different Android panes. We can't really make a call on how we feel about this new Moto skin, but it does feel like a major improvement and it absolutely didn't slow down performance. We should also mention that preloaded on the phone was a Blockbuster application and a DLNA type app. Those two pieces combined with the fact that there will be a separate HDMI dock available has us thinking multimedia is the focus here.

Third bullet point in the article.

All you guys getting pissed at this...did you forget we all saw Froyo running on a N1 during the I/O?

It amazes me how so many people who are waiting for froyo conjure up these conclusion on why froyo hasnt been released yet without any hard facts backing it. It's a given the N1 owners will be the first to receive the official release. That photo with the little robot has nothing to do with the reason Froyo is not officially released yet. Cot dammit, its hasnt been released because its not ready yet lol! Why is it so hard for some people to digest that? froyo is a "Major" update to the OS, not a minor bug fix. Let google fix whats needed to be fixed so that we may have the best experience with Froyo lol.

In all fairness.. a lot of people with the n1 probably paid full price for the device.. 529$..
And I know for me.. part of why I don't mind paying that price is because, I will get the update first..... Its the price of an unlocked unsubsidized phone.. so we do have certain expectations..

Why would buying the phone unsubsidized give anyone a priority? It's not like we're paying more money for the things. I bought mine unsubsidized, and when I do the math I end up paying about $100 less then if I bought it on contract.

To be exact, I paid $580.00. I didn't pay that price to receive updates first. I paid that price for the features, and for a phone that is at least 95% glitch free! I'm thirsting for the update as well, but i want Google to take their time and make it right, because right now, the phone is not right with all the touchscreen issues going on!

I would say one good reason unsubsidized buyers should get priority is because, subsidized phones have to have "carrier approval" or some crap like that.
So If I'm paying for an unsubsidized phone.. I am paying so that my carrier does cripple, weaken and more or less castrate my phone..
As horrible as that is.. that is pretty much what it boils down to.. my carrier has a habit of butchering phones.. and well quite frankly..
If we pay money for a phone that is suppose to be "Google's Flagship Phone" especially coming from a carrier that butchers all of its own phone.. Then we expect to get what we paid for.. the updates first..
With that said.. I don't care whether froyo comes out now.. or in two months from now.. If I pay for a nexus one, I want the nexus one to get froyo before other people who happen to pay less for their phone..

Android 2.1 In June?!

Just found this online:
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...confirms-another-delay-to-hero-upgrade-684928
Looks like we won't be getting Eclair until June now. So damn annoying. Ah well, let's just hope it's worth the wait. For now I'm just happy I'm using custom ROMs.
SHIZZLE!!!!!!!!
what a bad joke. well, as we expected a LONG time ago: HTC just wants to see some more HTC Desire/ HTC Legend sales. And judging by the topics in this board, they succeed.
The Update is done, they can't tell me that they have the Legend Rom up and running, but don't have the Hero Update yet. But they won't release it until they are satisfied with the new devices initial sales.
This is really a bad practice, and another reason why getting an Nexus One makes more sense...
Yeah, that's pretty much gonna do it for me. If the Desire is fully rooted by the time I can afford one/it's available in Canada, Imma get one of those. If not, an N1.
Okay.. is this one of those speculations/rumors..?
More delays... just great!
I was holding out for the official update but after reading this I reckon I might as well just test some custom 2.1 ROMs out.
SenseHero 2.1 here I come
I'm really tired of those delays.
And in June they will say that they won't release 2.1 because Froyo is almost finished
Sod it! Bored of waiting so flashed Villain 5.2. So far so good. Seems like the best 2.1 I've tried yet. Having said that I was quite happy with MCR 3.2, but new Google Maps with nav tempted me.
N1 for me baby! well when I get a free upgrade in a few months!
How can you use your free upgrade to upgrade to a phone only available through google?
Unless you plan on selling your update and buying an N1?

nailed it on the head sir, shall get a desire and sell it to fund a N1 !
Honestly, FU HTC - it is sureley the last device I buy from you!
Even Nokia phones do get updates more regulary than this buggy piece. I paid 500€ for this device and have to stick with a one year old SW? WTF?
I'll go for a custom ROM. Seems that some homebrew part time hackers are able to build better and newer ROMs over the weekend, than the whole HTC R&D departement. That's how you show skills! Well, better luck next time (Motorola or Apple will do it for me).
And yes, I'm pissed!
I'm fed up with this... everytime they 'say' they'll release the update, they always delay it. TBH, we'll be lucky if we get it by the end of the year. Damn it, I'll just root my phone
I wont be purchasing another HTC phone again. Nexus two please Google!
You guys seem to be forgetting who makes the N1. Granted it's only the hardware but still...
Haha HTC makes the Nexus too! So buying that wont hurt HTC that much

And don't you dare to choose HTC as the manufacturer for your next Superphone...
It is frustrating, and with the rate that they churn out new 'phones it's hardly surprising that we've been left out in the cold.
For me, the new iPhone is certainly tempting. They're reportedly only now about to drop software updates for the original iPhone, and that's a few years old now. With multi-tasking it finally becomes a smart phone rather than a toy so I may well be heading in that direction.

only the newest of the iphones can multi-task though.
It took them a long time to even get copy and paste features.
HTC has given us more updates than apple has, they just have not jumped up to the next version yet.
Htc did the worlds first 3g phone? worlds first 4g phone? they are always at the forefront of what's going on. Just because there is a slight delay in releasing 2.1 for Hero (because they quite rightly want money! its a business afteral) people think they are crap.

Yes, I'm considering the next iteration of the iPhone, whatever it may be called, not a 3GS. What I'm saying is that iphone OS 4.0 is *finally* looking to be a feature rich smartphone OS and so the iPhone is worth considering.
Anyway, this is heading off topic. Let's get back to complaining how long it's taken HTC to update the Hero.

July 15th

My friend just got out of a sales meeting where they got to play with it.
it is coming July 15th behind a large marketing campaign. No pre-orders, at least not in store.
They will be offering early upgrades like ATT did for the iPhone to get more people to get it.
They're screwing current Droid owners, though. Check out the live blog from engadget... I can't link it because of some silly restriction so you'll have to google it.
You can only upgrade if your upgrade eligibility is up sometime in 2010, which means anybody that bought a Motorola Droid is screwed. I got mine on launch day and I gotta admit I'm pretty PO'ed I can't upgrade.
it will have 2.2 and cost $199

Screwed? Of course you got screwed. That's how technology works. It screws you over the month after you buy it. Btw, you screwed yourself over for signing a two year contract. By next year, they will have a Droid 3 and the year after that and etc.

Really? Did Verizon suddenly change the upgrade language of the contract you signed? If you can't think ahead before you sign a long term contract, you have no one to be upset with except yourself. Verizon didn't screw you, your short term "gotta have the best right now" attitude is what screwed you.
No one cares that you have buyers remorse. You ultimately have two choices - wait until you can upgrade at the reduced prices, or go ahead and buy a new phone at full price. You could always sell your existing phone if you choose option #2 to help take the edge off the full retail price.
You can complain about it all you want, but you won't gain any sympathy, and it won't change the choices available to you.
You can upgrade...ETF + sell phone + buy the new one. Yeah, it costs money...so do phones. In 3 months when new snap dragon processors hit the streets people with a droid-x will be complaining. Buy the phone for what it is, and don't get pissed that there is better things out there. Or, if it is a big deal, pay up. Verizon doesn't get these things for free you know.

Froyo 2.2 By July

I talked today with sprint supervisor and confirm the Froyo 2.2 will be available for July for sure but dont have a specific day. Also they working for a another patch to fix the last update 1.47.651.1
Good News
PS : I wil continue eating donut and coffe for the waiting
Cool!
But doubtful, those Sprint customer service reps really just tell you what you want to hear, it is almost never factual.
I got confirmation from supervisor not from a representative. I think supervisor got more accurate info than representative that just talk rumors
Most of the time most people that work at Sprint (Including supervisors) have no idea what they are talking about. Anyways, its more up to HTC then Sprint as to when it will be available since they are the ones that have to do most of the work.
Man, LBJ / Bosh coming to the Bulls sometime in July ... 2.2 as well?
hah I love speculating.
Yea they really have no idea. Some said August, July, September, October. They just say whatever they feel like. I used to work for Spring and generally we know more then they do.
is it best to actually talk to the HTC representative over Sprint???
I think the concensus is that 2.2 should drop sometime this summer, which offically ends 9/21/2010. However, from a business prospective, I think it would be prudent to release 2.2 to as many handsets as possible as close to the same date as possible. Reason?....sales of any handset running 2.1 for any length of time after the majority get 2.2 will die quickly, resulting in a lot of unsold inventory.
I won't believe it until it is released and running on my phone. Funny thing is, we know as much, if not more then they do
Or we might get Gingerbread on our Evo's come October.
http://gizmodo.com/5576478/rumor-android-30-gingerbread-out-october-for-higher+specced-phones
oh man can we please not play this game? over in the hero forums we played this game with 2.1 and god it doesnt get anywhere and all the waiting is usually for nothing as we end up with a leaked ruu that gets hacked and people are sad that its not everything they want it to be.

The EVO meets the hardware requirements for 3.0. Do not worry, young one.

The requirements say 3.5", 512MB RAM and 1GHZ...The Evo has all of these. There is no reason for it not to get Gingerbread (3.0).
ive got a few facts:
1) there are no dates
2) it is coming "soon" (per sprints press release)
3) it will not be released until everything is worked out. thats what pushed back the 2.1 updates, htc/samsung kept sending buggy builds (some of which leaked) and the general population wont deal with the flaws like we will b/c we want the latest and greatest. therefore, it wont be released until its completely ready

We better get Gingerbread!
Does it seem like they might just jump straight to 3.0 for high-end devices, and keep 2.2 for low-end devices as the article mentions?
This would be sweet, as it would save time for them trying to push out 2.2 and then have to wait again for 3.0.

Would you PAY for FroYo / Gingerbread on your fascinate?

Simple question
IF $$ is the issue for Samsung cant we just make a PAY to upgrade option from them? Maybe they would go for it?

stop buying Samsung phones for a month....I think they will get the hint
I'll take Kaos's build of froyo over a samsung build. I ran his froyo build for the eris for months with less problems then I ever had with the stock software. He is very good at what he does, just give hime some time.
I wouldn't pay Samsung one red cent for updating the Touchwiz crap. However, when it comes to the software our wonderful XDA devs crank out, I'll gladly join the cause. For the month I ran KaosFroyo on my Eris, I donated $10. For the possibility of Froyo/GB epicness on my Fascinate, I went big and donated a phone.

Well, first of all, Microsoft certainly does charge for OS upgrades, but not bugfix patches. Some my beg to differ, but I consider Froyo an OS upgrade. Granted, it's free from Google, but Samsung does put their work into it, and I don't necessarily fault them for considering it something they need to charge for.
That said, Apple also charges for updates, both for Mac OS and for iOS. In the case of iOS, the cost of the upgrades are figured into their contract with AT&T (and likely now with Verizon), so the carrier and/or customer pays for it one way or another. This is why iPod touch users have to pay for the major upgrades, because Apple won't give away the update. The thing is, if carriers can entertain this type of agreement with Apple, they should really have no problem doing the same with Samsung. Because of that, I fault the carriers more than I fault Samsung at the moment.
**** no and I wouldn't feel bad about pirating it.
The only way I'd even consider paying for an OS upgrade is if it was stock Android - no TouchWiz and absolutely no Verizon bloatware. Period.
I think this is a pretty good idea....let's forward the request to sammy. Get them to offer it via paid, everyone chips in a few cents, download it to one phone for the RIL file, let the devs rip it, where golden! ;-) because I'm not giving sammy another fcking dime of my money....well maybe a few cents.

This is why iPod touch users have to pay for the major upgrades, because Apple won't give away the update.

They ended that policy with 4.0, and they'd previously said that charge was required due to some sort of limitation or something another with their systems (don't remember exact wording, but it was likely BS anyways).
I just recently bought the Fascinate (mid-ish December), and probably would have returned it for the iPhone if I wasn't interested in doing actual development for Android (which is about $600 cheaper to get started, for me). The Fascinate hardware is top-notch, there's really no disputing that... it's just unfortunate that Samsung couldn't put any effort into rolling out updates (much less purposely holding off on updates just for a bullet point on the next gen models). Considering the situation, I would be flat out pissed if Samsung asked for money (even 9.99) for Froyo, largely due to the principle of the matter, and how much of a slap in the face it would be.
On the other hand, I would consider donating to PK and the others, they're doing this completely in their free time, and IIRC, PK doesn't even use the Fascinate, he just got one donated to him (who ever donated that is also awesome). Once there's a fairly stable Froyo/GB release with working GPS/Camera/3G/Voice/sms/mms, I'll then have to figure out who all I need to throw a few dollars towards
I'd rather donate to a developer than put more money in the pockets of rich greedy companies. F*CK Samsung.
$0-$00 for Gingerbread sounds like a good deal to me.

$Cheap-$Cheaper sounds like what you are. At least donate some money to the devs who are gonna get you Gingerbread, or contribute to getting it done yourself, or better yet, do it yourself, then we'll gladly donate to you.
We already paid for Froyo when we bought our phones. These were marketed and advertised as an update coming soon. Had Samsung advertised these phones as is, and implied that no update was coming, there wouldn't be the outcry there is for this update.

1) I was making a joke (albeit a dumb one) about the fact that the poll says $0-$00 rather than $0-$10.
2) This post is asking whether I would pay Samsung, not whether I would donate to the devs here.
3) I never implied that I wanted/expected donations.

RE:2.2/Froyo pulled?

RE:2.2/Froyo pulled?
Hello,
All the speculations and rumors about the Verizon 2.2/Froyo update being pulled are false, I assure the update is still coming. We are working to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available to all Verizon users as soon as possible.
Thanks,

That is why I opened this one. I'm in a ranting mood today so feel free to add your frustrated comments.
We have froyo & don't want their bloated version. They need to work on & bring us the latest OS

i for one would love for them to release their bloated version (even though i wont use it!), because that means we get KERNEL SOURCE!
how i miss my BLN, voodoo sound/colors, undervolted/overclocked kernels!
Well.... I had high hopes when he came a long. But, It has been too long, I will NEVER buy samsung again. It has been confirmed that I will buy HTC from now on. They are fast with updates, and well over all a better company. Buy Sammy, I am going to get rid of this POS phone ASAP.

Yes, Samsung is creating Froyo builds for our phone and sending them to Verizon just for fun, and neither have any intention of ever releasing it. Get real, they may be stupid, but they would never put resources into something that's never getting released.

I won't say never, but.......
I bought my device with the OS it had, I don't really feel that I am owed anything else. BUT, The GPS was a fail on mine until I loaded the leaked 2.2 roms. It would take many minutes to lock, if it ever did lock.
This phone charges at about a 300ma rate on USB, and at about a 600ma rate on a high rate charger. Using it in a car as a GPS (bright screen, constant processing) consumes closer to 1000ma. So, while on charge in the car as a GPS, your battery is going dead. That is a failed hardware design.
After using the phone for a time again as a GPS in the car, the buttons (back, home etc.) start blinking and any apps close down. The phone becomes worthless. I need to unplug it, pull the battery and let it cool off for 10 minutes or so before it is useable. VZW and Samsung say 'don't use it like that!'. What? My previous HTC phone would do this for days on end. More hardware fail.
Needless to say, I am not overly impressed with the Samsung hardware or the software. Like I said, I'm not going to say 'never', but this is wearing thin...........
I'm a little pissed because when I bought the phone from verizon I asked the rep if if had 2.2. She said, "no all our phones ship with 2.1 but are all have froyo updates that you can do from home." We should all get free thunderbolts for our troubles.

She didn't lie to you. You can get 2.2, from home, when they release it.
I love how my desktop doc user manual says "The audio line out jack will be fully functional upon the release of android 2.2 for samsung galaxy s phones. To update your phone to android 2.2, visit samsung electronics web site at www.samsungmobileusa.com."

+1 for free Thunderbolts, although I have my eye on that new LG Optimus duel core.
It's telling that even the rumors have died down. A couple months ago searching for "fascinate froyo" would pull up speculation and rumors galore. Now, nothing pertinent. This is long past a fail.
I'll decide what phone to get next based on what there is at the time. But both Samsung and Verizon will be at substantial disadvantages in the comparison.
OK now that sammy said so here it has to be soon NOTthey have said that it would be coming for seven months. We already have froyo, and ton of roms
I know we have Froyo already, but how about a version that doesn't have battery destroying wakelocks? I am still looking forward to an official release that will hopefully be less buggy than the Froyo we have now.

At this point Froyo is meaningless, as it's been seven months since it was promised to be out "very soon." Having source would be great, but it's too late for Samsung; epic fail. They had better redeem themselves with a surprise (and quick...as in ACTUALLY QUICK) Gingerbread release instead of Froyo, otherwise they will lose a ton of customers, including me.
With Samsung, it appears to be one jerk job after another. By the time they roll out 2.2, a lot of us will be ready for another upgrade, and guess what, we're going to think long and hard about buying another Samsung product. I like my Fascinate, but only because we have the leaked 2.2. If I was still on 2.1, I'd most likely be using a different phone by now.

You said it! Heck, we'll all probably be on different phones by the time Samsung releases Froyo, because our TWO YEAR contracts will be up by then.
We want a bloated Froyo so that we can get source code! That's what has been holding us back with development! I'm so sick of all these empty promises. "You'll get Froyo in September. No wait, November." "Er, we meant, before the end of 2010!" And as 2011 began, "it's coming soon!" 3 months later, it's the same empty promise of soon, so they send John to post here and attempt to keep us at bay. Samsung can shove it. It's completely unacceptable, and I am so tempted to submit this to the Better Business Bureau. We can't even use accessories that we purchased a long time ago, because we still don't have 2.2. This phone should go EOL and we should get free Tbolts, as someone said earlier. These are unacceptable practices, and I'm pissed about it. I don't know how Samsung is getting away with it.
