Get the nexus one or wait for the HTC supersonic?

Idk what to do because new phones come out every 2 months that are better and make the previous models obsoletee! Should i get the nexus one or wait for the HTC supersonic? Do you think the nexus one will loose its value over the next 6 months if i decide to sell it?

I disagree; better models being released do not make a phone obsolete. Sure it means you're not on the bleeding edge of technology, but your nice new shiny phone will not degenerate into a piece of rusty scrap metal overnight. It will be a long time before these phones are obsolete.

I can't answer this as a quick Google produces conflicting accounts regarding quality, what stage the phone is up to regarding development, etc.. The specs I've read are also "leaked" (see: subject to change or may not even be true at all).

It wont lose all of its value, obviously, but it certainly can go down just a tiny bit in price. I'd say get a Nexus One and sell it when you're ready; just make sure you take care of it, keep all original boxes and manuals, all plastic wrappers and casings, etc so you can get the maximum amount of money possible for it.

heheh...seriously...if your opinion is that a new, bigger, better phone will be out in 2 months, then perpetually wait for that phone! based on that statement, you'll never feel comfortable buying a new phone.
do yourself a favor...buy a nexus one, enjoy it, and when you're tired of it, buy a new one.

A phone backed exclusively by GOOGLE is not going to loose any value.
Any other phone is just that a new phone. But a phone sponsored by a company I.E apple (iphone) Palm (pre) Google (nexus One) etc. Fall into a different category.
At the end of the day people look at google and know their phone is the nexus one so that adds value to the device.
Plus i prefer to be backed by google all the way. This means that the moment a new release is out in the AOSP rep the google backed phone will have first dibs on it so youll always be up to date.
Perfect example is look at the htc devices and motorola. 2.1 Been out for q month now and the only phone with it officially is the nexus one.
The other devices are not making the leap to 2.1 till probably next month or april. T oeach its own but there is a difference between a FLAGSHIP company phone and just a Released updated phone.

please excuse my being ignorant... besides wimax, will supersonic support WCDMA&GSM I am totally an idiot about WiMax technology...

The bigger issue in my mind would be who in the modding community is going to support it.

The absolute BEST way to play this game is to buy the first phone that comes out on the market using the next best processor.
The N1 currently has the only Snapdragon processor on the market.
It will be 9-12 months before the next 3.7 inch (or larger) Android phone with the next best processor is released.
Nuff said.

I bought the Nexus One, because I like having the lastest coolest stuff available to me, ie Android 2.1. I don't think we'll be sitting around 6 months after Android 3.0 (or whatever release) waiting for Google to push us an update. After owning an iPhone since day one I realized hardware isn't everything (This applies to other devices & hardware as well) I think we'll have the latest features with the N1 for a very long time, if we don't it'll be hacked in under 30 days, ie Desire ROM.
I will say this about the N1, when I first received it I thought I made a mistake coming from the iPhone but after a month with the phone there is no way I could go back to that glorified VTech toy. Every issue or complaint I had about the phone has been addressed by either Google, Cyanogen or a third party developer. (Other than my palms continually touching the screen but a case fixed that)
But seriously, you're looking at phones like they are software. Always something new around the corner. Outside of IT stuff, my other passion is cars. When considering a phone, look at it like you would a car. There is always going to be something out there faster, nicer and more fuel efficient but that doesn't mean your current car isn't fast, fun to drive or even a "clunker" And don't take me the wrong way I'm not talking down or preaching I had a hard time getting over the idea of not having the "best phone" for at least the next year coming from the iPhone that had zero competition (IMO) for two years. I waited for the Nexus One because it can out do pretty much anything the iPhone can do but that doesn't make my old iPhone any less of a great phone (despite what I'm sure others in this forum have to say about it). But also like a car, do your research and be very sure of your decision because you're going to be stuck with it for a very long time (Owning a phone for 2 years is like owning a car for 5 or 6 years)

Depends on your situation. Supersonic means you have to be with Sprint, N1 means T-Mobile or ATT(w/o 3g). If you have prefer one over the other, choose your phone accordingly. Otherwise, getting N1 now isn't a bad idea if you want to be on the cutting edge.
Now, the downside of being on the cutting edge is that things don't always work smoothly. N1 even with the latest (beta?) radio rom still give me lots of dropped calls, touchscreen randomly borked, etc.. Not that I wasn't prepared for this, but it kinda surprised me to see these problem from Google. Maybe they should have just released it as BETA(tm).
I have a feeling that there are bugs to be weeded out with N1. While Google is 100% behind the handset, remember that this is actually their first handset. So don't expect smooth experience with N1.
As for losing value, I never really thought of that since I save all my old cellphones.

That's a Bummer! I have none of the issues you mention, and it's been super from day one!!

I believe that the Nexus One will have a much bigger hacker community than Supersonic.
If you can still wait until the Supersonic is out, you might as well wait for that time and see *all* your options in the market. Who knows? Maybe, Nexus One (or HTC Desire) will be cheaper by the time Supersonic is out or there's another great phone with nice specs and a huge dev community.
If you really can wait for so long, you might also want to consider waiting for Nexus Two.
If you can't wait for so long, buy the Nexus One now. Beside the hardware; the support from Google, HTC (especially because of the Desire ROM ports), and a huge community make Nexus One a winner.

The G1 seems to get the most development of all the Android devices (judging from this place, always seem to be something going on over there with the G1). Despite it's design, and processor.. people do seem to love the G1, it even still seems to be going strong after its 2008 release too.
I assume the N1 will be the same ~.~ loved, and loved for long.

Agreed. I used to get the newest and best of everything, now I stick to the ones with the best community - problems get fixed and new things get ported. The less widespread, but "newer" stuff usually has very little support.

Agreed. It can't be pointed out enough that this is not only "Google Phone 1", but "Android Dev Phone 3." Every Android 2.1+ app will be proofed and bug tested on a N1.

xdaIf it's an HTC android device...why wouldn't it be a prominent device in the xda community ?

Actually the HTC HD2 has the snapdragon too and technically hit the market before the Nexus One.
Your theory is sound though. Buy a phone with the next step in technology and it will age slower. As everyone has said, phones are probably the fastest moving field of technology so there is always a better model just a couple of months away. Get something like a Nexus One that has good support from it's manufacturer, good support in the community, is still very new and will have good resale value and thats your best bet.

If 4G is important for you, wait for the supersonic. Otherwise, get N1 and enjoy it until the new HTC Olympian. I read this will be the android version of HD2!

how about wait for the HTC Hypersonic, I hear it allows you to travel in time ;-)

who is keeping the hero??

just wanted to see who is keeping the hero as long as they can or ditching it the second they can. i just feel a little lonely cause everyone is moving onto the evo. i am proud to say that i am keeping my hero for atleast a few more years.

I'll be keeping mine until I find something that I can't live without. I am trying to hold out for a super phone that isn't 4g. Just seems like a waste since it is not anywhere near me at all, and won't be for quite some time I'm sure.
Though, the new Samsung Galaxy S Pro is looking pretty dang tempting (3x more powerfull than EVO/Nexus processor)

I've had my Hero since January. I've been poking around the EVO forums, and since my dad has one, I'm not sure if I want to switch when I can upgrade or have cash up front. The Evo looks nice with a bigger screen compared to the Hero. I'm still not sold on the Evo as of yet. I'm sticking with my Hero since it's been tweaked to my liking.

I'm bouncing back and forth. The "next generation" android phones are supposed to be coming out by year-end. Not sure what that means, exactly, but something better than the Evo might be out by then. I have to wait until October to upgrade anyway. I might also be out of a job for a time, depending on what happens here at the office. My girlfriend has expressed an interest in my Hero after I upgrade, though, so I guess I might be keeping it in that respect. Who knows?

Im keeping my Hero until the first Android phone comes out with at least a SnapDragon processor and Froyo pre-loaded. Hopefully Sprint will get something like this (prolly not) so if its on T-Mo then so be it.

New phones were exciting when they used to be released once every year or two. Nowadays, with a hot, new phone coming out every few weeks, I don't bother with it any more. I am sticking with my Hero until it breaks and then I will buy whatever has replaced the EVO used on eBay for $50.

Most likely keeping mine until at least October, when I'm eligible for the yearly upgrade.
Read about way too many issues with the EVO, including improperly grounded touch screen, touch screen lag, 30 fps limitation, build quality, etc.
I'm pretty satisfied / happy with my Hero for now, especially the way I have it running .

exactly. there just gonna keep coming out with better and better phones. the hero is already pretty badass, and im really looking forward to getting froyo ported to the hero.

Staying.. my hero does what i need it to.. plus have to much fun trying roms and such.. the evo is nice.. but i have up my 30 dollar sero for the hero.. dont want to pay that extra 10 dollars for the 4g when its 40 miles away.

I read that At&t HTC Aria is the US version of the HTC Legend. Bah editing the original UK phones Sucks

I wanted to get into a Droid when they first came out as I was with Verizon for 8+ years. For whatever reason, they would not cut me any breaks on a handset even though I was due for an upgrade. I really wanted to get my hands on an android handset was got so impatient with VZ that I walked next door to the Sprint store (literally across the parking lot) and grabbed what they had at the time. (It was Hero or Moment... not a hard choice)
This was back in March and I've been nothing but pleased with my choice. Granted, the Hero is older, slower hardware, but for someone wanting to experience and tinker with Android, the Hero has been a perfect fit. The community here around this handset is vast and we have so many mods and roms to play with. When I finally do get into a better handset, I'm going to have quite a bit of experience already with optimizing, modding, and really knowing how to get the absolute most out of my phone since all of us here are working with pretty limited resources compared to something like an Evo.
I'm glad I moved to Sprint and got the Hero. The pace of new, awesome phones coming out right now is crazy and when I'm ready to upgrade, I'll have my pick of amazing phones natively running 2.2/3.0. I am a bit weary about this mandatory 4G charge though. Hopefully by the time I'm ready to move on there will still be some quality offerings in plain 'ol 3G.

I'll be keeping my hero. I don't like the large screen on the EVO and there is no 4G coverage in Oklahoma yet that I know of. When time comes to upgrade we'll see what Sprint has to offer but until then it's the Hero all the way.

Also, I`ve read here about some problems with the touch screen that suddenly appear... is that a general issue or just some isolated incidents?

The phone is over a year old now, the CPU is a generation older than the other Android devices with the 1GHz Snapdragon processor. I'm sure the phone manufacturers are preparing the next generation devices for later in the year - making those phones obsolete.
If you're after a cheap device then you should be able to get a Hero second hand for a decent price. If you're willing to root and try new ROMs then there is still a decent community for the Hero - otherwise you'll be stuck on Android 2.1 if you stick with the official updates. The Hero is highly unlikely to get any more updates from HTC.
If your budget allows for a newer phone, then you'd be better off getting a more powerful Android device.

Thanks, I too think that it`s a little old, but it has a fairly good price, almost the same as Wildfire here, where I live, but that qvga screen on the Wildfire is a let down for me.

Alex~ is bang on, it is cheap,and the community on here is great, so if your gona be using custom roms then go for it. But I wouldn't like to say how many devs will still bother with us after Xmas.

Tru, there are better phones available if buying new, but it's more than competent if second hand.
I'll be about till May 2011 with my hero anyway, as my contract expires then. And even then, the hero is popular enough to merit continued support i reckin.

Hi I just bought one off eBay about a month old for £150 took a bit time to root and get used to Android, but worth it and its ok for price with lots of features. Although I think I now should have gone for HTC Legend?

I agree completely, imo the only other phone that looks as good or better than the Hero is the Legend. A Hero-shaped super phone would be amazing

they've released the htc wildfire which is very much just a repackaged hero... i have no idea why they did it. it lacks all the style and class of the hero and only has an fm radio to make up for it.

Well if you root your Hero and overclock it, it pretty much becomes a Legend. Without the better screen and slimer profile. I want the Desire but got the HTC Hero this year because it just looked awesome (unfortunately Canadian carriers screw you over with 3 year contracts instead of two ) but I do love my Hero as it is my first smart phone and I love the 'chin'.
It is a matter of preference so the choice in the end is yours, but we do have Feeyo .

The design really stands out yea. People are always like "hey, what kind of phone is that?" while my brother gets none and has a desire

I get that a bit. Although the only smartphone that really has any recognition here in NZ is the iPhone. I imported my phone as we don't even have a decent range of Android phones (at reasonable prices). I mean... we JUST got the Nexus One which Google just stopped selling? lol.
But I only recently got my hero (a month ago now?) and i'm happy with my purchase. I mean... there's other purchases that could be had. I almost got a Milestone but the keyboard really put me off (played with my mates', it was a terrible keyboard.. the buttons are so stiff it isn't funny). I mean... I noticed a price drop of the Milestone shortly after I purchased my Hero but.. Eh, I can't complain. Bigger screen/higher res would've been nice though. Specs aren't really much more to write home about though.
Hero was reasonably priced, looks good, performs well enough. My only real annoyances about it are: No official Froyo, smaller screen/lower-resolution than others, can't run some newer games which i probably wouldn't play much anyway.
I'll probably upgrade next year when I have lots of money

Google better not abandon or neglect N1 for this NS

Google better not leave us Nexus One owners out to dry for this Nexus S. Im talking about being the first to get updates like Gingerbread and Honeycomb (at least up to Honeycomb).
I still love my Nexus One and don't see any overwhelming reason to change to the Nexus S. Especially since HTC has been SO good to me.
Who's with me? Any of you thinking about jumping ship? Why?

As for getting the new one. At this point, nope. Not enough there to justify the $529. More memory, but no expansion?? 2nd Camera that I would never use. The Gyroscope. Eh.
Really the only thing there is Android 2.3. It will come out eventually for the N1. Even if not right away I will wait for it. I might try it when it comes time to upgrade the latest Desire Port but I have been happy with Sense UI and want to keep that in the long term so no big deal.

Not worried about Google as long as we have XDA!

I would like to definitely try it. The only thing that kinda bothers me is the built in memory, but then again I have 8GB on the nexus one and I don't really feel the need to upgrade to anything more yet. If I switch to the nS is because of the front camera and (hopefully) a better digitizer, I hate the half baked one of the n1.

Thats a very good point Neo, Thanks.

I'm pretty sure they did ages ago and just handed over everything to HTC, who will probably get rid of all N1 support in about 6 months when the last warranties expire.
In terms of software though, it BETTER get Gingerbread and Honeycomb.

Google better continue specializing their production of Android based on my year old device, those bastards. Joking aside ; even if Google does abandon us, as you say, it's certainly not the end for the Nexus One. Look at the G1 running Froyo for crying out loud. There are a lot of N1's floating around out there, and the demographic of its users are almost all tech heads like ourselves - A LOT of whom are even developers/programmers.
Don't concern yourself with the matter, if your phone does what you need it to and you like it... keep it. If you need to be first in line for updates directly from Google for the next year, I would suspect the NS would be the way to go.
Personally, I'm hanging on to my N1 until there are some respectable multi-core phones on the market. When that day finally comes I intend on having my Nexus framed; this has been the best phone I've owned and I don't think I could find it in myself to sell it.

That N1 has never gotten shafted, seriously. Give an example. The reality is that 11 months after its release we are still at the head of the line for OS updates. What is it with the ridiculous persecution complex among some N1 owners??

We should as a community make sure that google doesn't leave us.
we must remind them that as we were loyal to them, and they'd better not do an apple thing and ditch us.
Our phone's still more than capable compared to any other phone out there....

This alone should be enough to console the worried. A 2 year old phone, with incredibly outdated hardware, is still getting major support from developers -- if even Google abandons us.. hopefully there is one place that won't.

I dont get why anyone gets so defensive about a phone, whatever it may be. Choose the phone which does what YOU want it to do, what it does NOW, not what it may or may not do in the future. Then, when you've made the choice, don't try and tell everyone else what they should or shouldn't choose.
As for the NS, looks nice enough, but I wont buy one for 2 reasons. First I've just bought an iphone 4 and second I'm reluctant to buy anything from samsung - I've had very little luck with their products - not just phones, and its always been a frustrating ownership experience - and worse - when its time to sell on, the resale value is terrible.

Google owes you nothing. The N1 was primarily a reference dev device for Eclair/Froyo. The NS is the new reference dev device for Gingerbread/2.4.
It's called progress, get over it.

Great news from the One X, Will the One follow?

So the HTC One X (barely one year old) is being 'forgotten' by HTC. It might receive Sense 5, if it's lucky, but anything after that is a no go. Source. There is no reason why, the device is still powerful. Will the HTC One follow this pattern next year? HTC has a history of leaving their devices behind, just looked at any of their previous phones. I really wanted to get the One, but after hearing this bit of news, I suddenly realized why I want to stray away from HTC now. Thoughts?
I'm really considering buying this phone but don't want it to be forgotten next year. I want a phone I can hold onto for a bit. The One, based on history, doesn't seem like it will provide.

Even if it is "forgotten" we have so many great devs that purchased the One so we will more than likely have custom ROMs with the newest software for quite some time.

The One X is confirmed officially to be receiving Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5.0 so what is the point of "if it's lucky"
meanwhile no official words about after that

Your phone, when purchased, works fine. Forgotten or not, it does not need an update to the software to work

KLP doesn't even have a release date so its no wonder HTC aren't committing to anything.

One X is one year old. It is being updated. next year, it will be two years old and won't be updated, but anyone who bought one the first year it was out will be upgrade eligible that year. Not seeing the huge issue.

Reminds me of my old desire hd which was promised ICS by HTC then decided not to push through with it anyway.

Apple IOS wont forget software update to their old devices(4 or 4s)!! great

yes but the Desire HD got a bucket load of updates, yes the end of the story was bad
but 2011 line up was huge and confusing
this year only one device to focus on
and the One X/S/XL had an amazing record so far and still to come
so really are we complaining for complaining sake?

I understand you're a fanboy, and I expect that from this forum, I do! The complaint is: HTC is not the best when it comes to updates. You made a great point, however, that the One is their main flagship so far. Whereas, last year, HTC had a pathetic, ridiculous amount of variants for the old One. Hopefully HTC doesn't repeat the same patterns as always and release many not so great phones and forget them.
As far as I am concerned, I am still trying to decide myself between the S4 and the One. I really lost my trust with HTC when I got the One S last year, but it is true that the One S was not the main flagship. I just hope the same issues that plagued me with the One S do not show on the One.

HTC put a lot more effort behind the One than they have in previous flagships, but even so I bet it will see really overdue updates same as always. The good news is customers in the states can just flash the international ROMs as soon as they are released.
Even so, the One has it's kernel source out there. The phone has been out for less than a month in the U.S. and h8rift already has a CM 10.1 alpha out. Cyanogen himself already bought the phone. There are great Sense 5 ROMs out there as well that run way better than anything HTC would release. You can be sure that there will be ROMs out there for KLP very quickly after it's released. So don't worry too much about the phone becoming obsolete, it won't any time soon. The different versions of the 'One _' handsets made for some fragmented development but that's not an issue with this One

The one S got 3-4 good updates.
I have had no problems with any of the updates, each one brought many improvements I found, only two annoying things, the power saver notification and battery chart change.
There is nothing that I can think of that they could improve even further except for camera quality overall and some other wee things like how you expand notifications, which iirc will be improved with android 4.1.2 Of course sense V5 will bring many "wanted" things, but they aren't "needed"
As said, wait until KLP is out and see what the update actually requires/brings and then see what HTC have to say, for all we know KLP might not come out till November......
Samsung haven't provided 4.2.2/new touchwiz to the GS 3 yet either and I can't see them getting it for at least another 1-2 months, possibly even longer due to how much they have crammed into touchwiz

Yes it is a joke the way that they didn't provide the JB update to the sensation.
Reason HTC didn't go with 4.2 for the one is because it was full of bugs, especially battery drain and plus it would have caused more delays so they stuck with 4.1.2 as it was stable and they could get it sorted out quicker. Supposedly the one X and S will be getting 4.2.2 with sense V5 around June, so the one will/should get that update before then. IMO 4.2.2 is a very minor update and not worth worrying about.
Also, might be worth considering that Samsung have added a ton more stuff to touchwiz now and imo bloated it with a lot of unnecessary stuff and moved further from stock android so updates could take longer where as HTC have moved closer to stock android and sense is less bloated/more minimal than touchwiz now.

Can't believe you even ask this question.. Obviously they will not care about one come next year or may be even 6 months down the line if there is a new flagship.
Sell your current phone buy the new one and move on. Or you have the custom roms if you want to keep the phone for x years.

you guys are forgeting 1 thing regarding HoX , if HTC decides to leave it on JB 4.2.2 and you guys believe you can get sense roms ported ETC you can't because it will most likely need BOOTLOADER UPDATE , without bootloader update you can only dream about getting KLP on HoX if HTC forget about us, i got hox myself and i'll be hugely dissapointed if they drop it with 4.2.2 , simply it has enough ram , more then needed storage , more then needed CPU power and lastly it's a very best 2012 international device.
One thing i must admit , even if they leave us with 4.2.2 it'll have most perfected JB as it already have . compare your HoX vs s3 on JB , the difference is night and day.
However i don't care i'm getting one even if they say it wont get any updates from now on. The design is too damn good to be true , the speed is incredibly and the speakers are strong enough to scare you off each time you receive the msg, or even better in the morning you wont only wake up yourself but your neighbours as well

No, it won't need a firmware update to get KLP. The reason it was required, temporarily, was because the firmware had changed and the new Sense kernel relied on those changes. After the source was released, it was all good.
