SIM card missing - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I am very sad as I now have the 'SIM card missing' problem with my Uni . So I am now seriously thinking of moving on to, maybe, a Touch Pro 2 as it's going to cost too much to get my Uni fixed and I don't think there's an easy/cheap solution to this problem (reading other threads).
Just when I thought I had the ideal ROM and Apps with the device!!

Migrating
Shame to hear that Jonny
But if I can give you an advice, go for Rhodium and it will help you to relief the pain for the loss of MAGNIFICENT Universal

I´ve got 3 Unis, one with broken Display, one that is ok and one with 128mb RAM. the one with 128mb ram says "SIM Card missing", i resoldered the Sim-Contacts but that wont work. Is there any Solution fpr this Problem?
Best regards
MrMmmkay

The only solution I've seen so far is to re-heat the solder under the radio chip that's responsible for the SIM. This seems to have 100% success in the forums, but I don't know anyone who can do it - and paying for it is too expensive compared to the price of the device in my opinion. I may just try with my solder iron and see if that gives any success!
The other suggestion was spraying with contact cleaner, however this only seemed to work in one instance.

OK, i think i first try to clean the Motherboard with contact cleaner, when this doesnt work im looking out for someone with hotair

Urgent help needed, hardware problem??

I've got a lot of problems when my sim card is inserted in the wizard.
Sometimes I can boot the device and it's working OK for a couple of houres and then suddenly it's hanging or crashing.
The screen starts to get white and then stays white.
Then it's almost impossible to boot. I made a video to let you guys see what is happening.
There is WM6 on it right now, but it doesn't matter which rom I use.
Also with the original rom it's crashing. I've send it back to Q-TEK and the fixed it (they say)
but it's still crashing. The only problem is that the phone is out of warranty now, so I can't send it back anymore.
Can you guys help me out? I can't use the device right now because it's crashing all the time.
Video can be found here: http://rapidshare.com/files/21192794/DV070315001.avi
If you are having problems with the full original ROM package (e.g IPL/SPL and OS), then it seems like a hardware problem. As for the warranty, you may want to check with 'them', some products have a 'renew' warranty on the latest fix. E.g., if your phone is fixed today, it will have a new warranty (3 months or 1 year) staring tomorrow.
Unfortunately I had some water damage after they tried to fix it. (3 months later it got into the water)
The device is working as before and don't have any problems because of the water, but I've got a big red paper under the sim card.
So no warranty anymore
Do you think it's the gsm module?
Can I buy that "somewhere" to replace that part?
OKay, found a site where I can buy wizard parts.
Do you think I need to replace one of the boards?
And which one do you think?
There is a mainboard and one board that's smaller (with ribbons on it)
It's obvious it's something to do with the sim card. Try cleaning the contacts on both the phone and the card and if you can try another SIM card.
Failing that, I would suggest carefully stripping it down and sell the individual parts.
Use the money you get to buy another Wizard or another phone of your choice.
Just a thought. There are alot of people who would buy the components to replace broken plastics, screens, speakers...... etc
The sim card is OK. I tried many sim cards.
All the same problem. It's just something in my wizard
I can buy a new mainbord, but I don't know which one I must buy. There are 2 of them..

dead sd-slot

hi,
i'ver got a charmer with a non working sd-slot here.
whatever card i try, it didn't work. also different rom images...
anybody with a sameproblem or may a solution here?
You have to bring it to service center to replace your card reader.
Card reader is so complicated, so I suggest you not to replace by yourself.
..
hm.
as far as i know, the sd-slot ist just a conntector with no addtional hardware components, i don't believe that this will solve it.
only if some pins inside the reader are not in right condition...
i bought a dead one on ebay last days, will heat up my solder iron and replace the slot... may it helps... i'll post the results after receiving the parcel.
You can try to blow into the SD slot. Although I doubt it would work

HTC is turning off :(

Hello everyone! I have problem with my phone because sometimes is turning off without any reason, I bought brand new battery and is still same when is switched off and I want to put it back on i must take off battery for couple of minutes, then put battery back and then switch on anybody know whats happened?? And how to fix it!!
It's the most standard problem with htc models touch and elf...
This problem is hardware based! in this condition there are only 2 things you can do:
1.send the device to a htc service center and get the motherboard changed for $300+ if you are out of warranty.
2.Or open the mobile and put a piece of thin plastic in between the omap prosessor chip and the steel piece tha goes over it and then put the second cover on top in order to apply pressure to it because the solder pins that are in between the cpu and the mobo are not connecting properly and lose contact so the phone goes off or freezes then goes off and some times stays off. Make sure that there is enough but not to much pressure applied to it! it worked for mine but i did it because it was out of warranty... its a temporary fix but if you are gentile to it after it will surely work for a few more months...
IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE SOMETHING LIKE THIS BEFORE OR YOUR TOUCH/ELF IS STILL IN WARRANTY DO NOT TRY IT!
I will post a pic that i took when i did mine if anyone is interested... Let me know...
Thanks for reply!
Uff.... first way to fix it is a little bit too expensive! And 2 way to do it seems quite easy, so i try to do it this way Could you add any picture of this and just tell me how to open this phone?
Many thanks!
@Firestarter42
Thanks man!!!!
did what you said, the plastic trik, and the phone is back to life (it was totally dead and didn't charge) you save a life today!!!
I had the same problem untill one day when he didn`t want to turn on and now i do not know what to do with it how to make it work again
Dear Sir,
I have just tried method 2.
My elf didnt have a metal cover on the processor, lol... got it used from someone... or should I say abused? lol
anyway, I hope it works. will update...
here's a link for the demonstrated tutorial:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=476152
Thanks a lot again.
I haved the same problem.....and i realize after many times that I didn't change my ipl and uspl!!!so my cocked rom frequentely turn off my device!!!now it's all right!!!!!!!
i had the same problm too....
it kept turning off and just a few weeks ago it would never turn on...
i did try that trick of keeping the plastic thingy on the omap processor ... it worked for a few weeks max after tht it happened as above
finally took my phone to htc.. told them it was gift and i dont have the invoice... actually purchased frm ebay for 150$ .....
they checked it was in warranty,.. they replaced the board... hurray... my elfin is alive again.. and in wm6.1
hope htc fixes this crap issue as many face this problem
My HTC elf was freezing, rbooting and so on, i was thinking that it was a windows/flash/third party programs problems ....
BUT I confirm that the method "open the mobile and put a piece of thin plastic in between the omap prosessor chip and the steel piece tha goes over it"
brings my htc elf to life again ... stable !
(i've done it with a metal piece and not plastic.)
Thanks for the advice !!!!
my elf was freezing and turning off so i try this 2. method and it works, and elf is much faster then before in my case...
I've never had this problem before but this week my phone switched itself off (so had to boot up again) a couple of times. I did try a new custom rom but I've also been using a different charger (USB mains adaptor) and a replacement battery (this seems to be a poor replacement battery which seems to make up the battery level.
So I don't know what was causing it. For some reason, removing the SD card and re-inserting it seems to have done the trick for now but I'll keep watching it.
Hi guys
My phone is, usually at night when there is no use, switching the screen off, the earphone green indicator flashes but the phone will not turn on when I press the power button, I have to do a soft reset each time to get it back on again (even though it appears to be on with the flashing green light). I cannot get calls or text and my alarm fails to sound. Have overslept a few times now!. Also, its battery has gone for a ball of ^&*%. Will this trick help? Thanks a lot!
Turn off as in literally 'poof!' or, it will restart?
The only way to get it to restart is to do a soft reset, or remove and replace the battery. The phone's green light will flash but there is no way to the screen to activate or use the phone - make calls, use the alarm, receive etc. The screen stays black, no use trying the power button either...

power problem on Elf (not the usual)
hello guys, i have an Elf T-mobile that someone "lost" i found it, but was bricked...i unbricked following the awesome guides on the forum and installed on it the original italian rom (obviously am not german)
but...here's the problem, when i press the power button (should get it into stand by mode like every pda does) or also when goes on stand by itself, just shuts down !!!
then the pda auto soft resets, until the end...doesn't have the "auto power off problem" like i readed on the forums...however it tried but didn't solve the problem
i think is a problem with the radio, or the IPL or SPL (i tried 1.11.0002 IPL and 1.11.000 SPL...then 2.2x.xxxx IPL and SPL...now i tried 3.14.0002 IPL and 3.14.0000 SPL, also tried different radios...
but the problem remains...
EDIT: Problem solved, changed the little battery in the motherborad, it worked for me

I'm presuming you mean for option 2, as 1 is quite obvious
Anyways, I haven't done this, but I am posting my best guess (untried, untested, just a theory).
Open your phone up and completely dissamble as described here. Completely strip it down so you only have your mainboard. Clearly take all the necessary precautions before hand (backup, etc etc.)
When done, you will see there are blank shields above where the chips will be, if you look, you can see little dimples, you can ease these off here. This will get you into where the omap processor is. You can then put the plastic on top, and make sure it is done as described. Should literally be a case of putting it all together and hoping for the best after that. I will have a look at some point (can't promise when) and see if I can take some photos of where this will go etc.
An alternative would be to try and reflow the joints of solder with a heat gun... very dangerous considering how tight the components are packed in, and overkill.

Tips for buying a used universal

Hello! could people please share tips and things to remember when buying a used universal? I mean what are the things that you should do to check or find tell tale signs of defect, hardware, the firmware the os, I have already done a search in the forums and already know some, but there might be things that I have missed, so help would be very nice, I will be meeting the seller so I get to inspect the device up close so it would be nice to armed with the info how to inspect the device from how to check the bootload etc.
Thanks for the help and I hope that this helps others too
The Universal can be bought cheap at german eBay. Look for MDA PRO. You should be able to purchase one for around or less than 100 Euro.
Preferably look for the following signs:
1) Unmodded. Many users got the Universal within a contract from the operator, but did not use it much, because it is too big for them. Such Universals are normally in good condition. When advertised that it ships with an OS different than WM5, you know that the owner has been flashing it. I personally don't like that, because that means it belonged to a power user and must be more worn out.
2) Warranty stickers. Make sure the hinges have the warranty stickers inside. If they are missing, the device has been opened. You don't want to purchase one that has been opened.
3) Screen. Screen should be without scratches and should have had always a screen protector.
4) Speaker. The external speaker which is used for calls can break, as it is fitted with some kind of pogo pins. Make sure it is working.
If you get to test the device first, do as this:
- do a call (bring your SIM card)
- check WLAN and Bluetooth (bring a headphone and try it somewhere with WLAN activity)
- bring a SD card and see if it is read
- check for bad pixels
- play a song
- take a picture
- try the keyboard and touch screen
- try all the buttons
If everything works, that is the best you can check it for.
Of course it could break the next day, but it shouldn't.
Cheers,
vma
Great guide vma!
I´ll just add:
Take special care on the swivel piece (The one that gives Uni it´s great and unbeatable form factor: PDA - Micro Lap top)
take care of another thing when i bouted my universal after i used it for about 1 week the phone was hangs soo much the reason was in the memory crd .....so you must try a memory crd and play a small video on it about 10 minutes
The most important thing everyone forgot to mention is USB port. When looking for a device, see if the port moves in any way or wiggles in its opening. See if the device synchronises with AS, charges etc.
The fact the device had been flashed or opened wouldn't play a huge part for me if everything else works well and the body is in sound condition, e.g. the hinge is not loose, the screen rotates and closes properly, all keys are present and work, keyboard backlight works with and without sensor etc.
Speakers don't just break, as post No2 claims (POGO PINS??), but it is good to check that phone is capable of making/receiving calls, you can hear the other party and the other party can hear you, can play music and earphone plug is in working condition/attached properly
Not reading SD or SIM card is a biggie, dim screen, lost touch sensitivity, scratched or damaged digitizer, worn out buttons - all obvious signs. You can open the back, remove the battery and SIM card and check for a small white blotting paper sticker covering the small mainboard pins under the SIM card, any change in color towards pink - do not buy.
@enigma1nz:
Shame on me, I did indeed forget the USB port!!! You should of course check both: charging and Active Sync connection. A broken USB connector is a mayor issue and hard to solder without proper equipment.
Regarding the speaker: I am speaking out of experience, as one faild on me. The speaker is like a small button and it has two contact plates. They are not pogo pins, but act like them. The speaker will be pressed by the case against two contact points on the PCB. What happens is that apparently some car-holders do too much pressure on the sides of the Universal casing, causing the speaker contacts to bend back and forth everytime the phone is placed or removed from the holder. After a few months the contact gets worse and worse until one of both plates brake off. Because they are so tiny, it is impossible to repair the speaker - believe me, I have tried. I ended up buying a new speaker cell at eBay.
Cheers,
vma

And believe me, I repair devices for a living. Thanks for the run-through, although I could give you the same. It happened to you, doesn't mean it happens often or it is a fault in design. I could give you a list of design faults in quite a few models of expensive cellphones on the market today, the mentioned speakers are not one of them.
I appreciate, the help people! any more inputs? I am happy that all the previous posts were, about how to inspect the device upfront and some other useful tips what to check other inputs will be highly appreciated
Battery can be also considered. Some are sold with good batery some with dead battery. It is not so expensive, but costs something. In general if battery shows less than 50% and devidce still works (even under load) that is a good sign.
Also as for the touch screen - the best test is to open note taker and try to paint something. The painted line must exactly follow the stylus movement if it jumps somewhere, then the touch sensitive layer is bad. I bouht such UNI on eBay (was described as perfect working order), had to replace the digitizer myself.
I do prefer buying not working UNI's on Ebay with good display. Once I bought not booting one - mtty job fixed that. Other time I bouht one where the display was still off - the flex cable popped out from connector. Etc....
Thanks for all the advice people! now, please welcome me to the HTC universal family, (well actually, I have a Dopod 900 but what the heck all are the same right?) your inputs had been essential, for me to get my new baby without any hitches I hope that nothing manifests after the one week assurance the seller gave me
Special thanks to enigma1nz for all the patience and help provided to me I asked her a lot of questions in the pm's but she answered in full detail
Now I have my own device so I will be flashing away, I hope without any problems. Again my thanks to the community hopefully there are more inputs for others who are thinking of buying their 2nd hand universal via meet ups
Excellent news! Congratulations!!! And welcome to the Uni family, of course. As you can see, we are one friendly bunch, all help and support will always be available. Have fun

HTC HD2 Freezer Trick Only Way to Make the phone work, Could it be overheating??

My htc doesnt turn on or work or charge unless i make it really cold like putting it in the fridge or freezer for a couple of mins, then it turns on by putting in battery and sticking in usb (because my buttons have snapped the flex cable) anyways it turns on and i have this russian rom flashed by previous owner, i managed to sync it with active-sync and i clicked explore it has wierd folder names like "?????" i click delete but windows doesnt let me because it says the filename should not contain "?". Then after a couple of mins maybe 2mins the phone switches off then vibrates 7 times then sometimes loads at htc splash screen?
and to make it work again ill have to make it cold again???
some details
Its a T-Mobile Version
The phone doesnt get hot?
its running windows mobile 6.5 daltt roms
and i updated the radio to Leo_Radio_15.40.50.07U_2.12.50.02_2
I think your battery is missed up, you need to replace it with a new one. try ebay.
as for the files with weird names, if they were located in your sdcard try to run checkdisk or scandisk from your computer to fix those errors.
you might want to reflash you windows rom and format your sdcard after this to prevent it from happening again, but don't forget to backup first!
Thanks for the reply!
Thanks for the reply by the way i havent got a sd card in the phone and i really dont think its the battery problem as it charges it up fine?
i was thinking i need a new motherboard as cpu is overheating but im not sure thats why im asking!
My HD2 acted like that (needed to put in fridge to work). Sent it for repairs and they replaced the motherboard.
Cheers
Yes mainboard CPU BGA issue probably.
you might find spares on this site or try buying one with a broken screen & you will have mainboard & button parts you need plus other parts can be sold on to recover costs ...

Ohh well i dint really want too spend money...
anyway what about that guide the one about thermal problems htc hd2,
would that work??
can you also tell me where i could find a motherboard thats working in the uk and could you give link please
thanks.
Please ive got no phone
ive got no phone!
please i really need help, dont leave me.........
The thread on solving the over heating problems is a thread on how to make a different heat sink for the HD2. And also heating the processor up to maybe solve the issues of the balling of the processor as the processor itself can not be removed without making the rest of the main board unusable. But the process that you must go through in that thread is not just for your average Joe to do. If you mess up you will be forced to replace the main board. So my advice to you if you are not skilled at such technical repair work is to just buy another mainboard or a HD2 you can harvest the mainboard from, oh and it needs to be a mainboard for the T-Mobile version too as that is what you have.
I have a personal theoory about why the freezer trick works. First is the obvious thing that it cools down the CPU and NAND chip and allows it to operate for a short period until it warms up again. The second is that cold makes matter shrink slightly, those causing a CPU that has lost some of the connections to the balls under it that make contact to the mainboard to temporally become reconnected.
newbie guide please
Okay I think for my last resort I'm going to do the guide in the thread but can somebody PLEASE make a super easy newbie tutorial on how to do it (I know it will take time but please),without the expensive equipment that I don't have. Could I use a lighter or a candle or what about the oven or a hair dryer anything that would be at home please.
Oh yeah who ever provides the information that works I will donate money to you! Only if it works (yes I do want my mother board back)
