EVO 4G screen cracked, no insurance, what are my options? - EVO 4G General

My 1 yr old just grabbed my phone off my desk and threw it on the tile kitchen floor.
The screen is now shattered, but still in place and still functioning.
I have no insurance.
What are my options?

I am so paranoid I bought the Radio Shack insurance AND the monthly insurance from Sprint. I am really sorry you are having this problem... I'm not really sure how you can fix it at this point. Maybe if you ordered one off the internet, MacGuyvered the screens (switch them) and then return the one you got on the internet... but that is very dishonest, not to mention difficult.

I had a similar situation, I called tm and made sure the person sounded nice and friendly. If they sounded like they hated their job I hung up. Usually if a guy thats polite answers that would be the best choice.
Now, just aks him/her if you can add the insurance to your phone. If they say its to late ask them what are your options because you want the insurance.
I was able to get hem to BACK date my purchse date and they added the insurance for me.

Add the TEP protection to your plan, wait a month and file a claim...not sure if you'll have to pay the deductible however that's one way

Maybe try buying the OEM HD2 screen off of ebay and seeing if you can drop it in? Lol that's what I'd do...

If you paid by credit card, ie AMEX, you could file a claim through them possibly. Most credit cards automatically extend your warranty by one year.

That wouldn't work since the HD2 screen doesn't have the capacitive buttons. Call HTC and byte the bullet.

1. If you bought with AMEX, you get 90 days of accidental warranty and +1 year of extended warranty.
2. Commit insurance fraud, sign up for Sprint TEP, file a claim after your 30 day return period is up.
3. Buy a replacement Evo/possibly HD2 screen off ebay/net.

I seem to remember from the teardown pix that the buttons are a different component altogether and that the lcds are identical. Also it's probably only that glass that is shattered right? The glass screen is separate from the actual lcd underneath.

Thanks for all the great advice, it will definitely come in handy when I stop crying and set out to resolve this

I think with Sprint total protection, you can purchase insurance within 30 days of receiving your phone. Since the EVO is in its third week, you should be able to purchase. Just do it through the website. It's only $7.

You bought both sets of insurance are you serious?

I have 2 Visas that have a 90 day protection.
Call the credit card that you used to buy the phone, if you used one. I had an iPhone replaced for free once after I dropped it on concrete. Good Luck.

Man, I'm never going to have kids.

Check with Sprint, I know At&t gives you 30days to enroll in the insurance from the time of purchase.

This is why I keep my 1 year-old far, far away from my EVO.

Fess up.
I never buy insurance on anything under $1000. If it breaks I will bow my head in disgust. Then I will go buy one at full price.
6 years of smart phones with no insurance x $7/mo x 12mo/yr = $504 saved.
Hopefully I didn't curse myself.

Put in Microwawe
You have 1 year warranty just put in microwave for 5 sec it will fry the board and most likely screen. No more then 5 sec. You have 1 year warranty take it to the store and say what the hell its not working.

Get TEP and pay the $100 deductible for accidental damage. Best option you have!

[Q] Small Cracks on screen! Now What?

I noticed I have 3 small vertical cracks on my screen. Must have happpened by excessive pressure while in my pocket. Now what? I have no insurance...
Thanks
Here are some options:
1. Take it in and claim a defect. If they buy it, great. If not, oh well.
2. Live with it. Maybe your homeowner's insurance policy will cover it?
3. Ebay it for parts.
4. Find a new screen and install it.
5. Buy a new one and be more careful next time.
That's about all you can do without insurance.
Crash your car, claim the damage as part of the accident, your insurance should buy you a new one.

And then...I would check to see how much it is to replace screen by sprint or HTC.
Was it a one time sitdown? Or was it overtime? Curious. Maybe it was defect?

why not call and add insurance... then in like 3 or 4 weeks call in and say you dropped it and cracked the screen pay 100 bucks they send you a new one you send them the old one and your a happy camper!!

Yes, insurance fraud is definitely the way to go..... way to go to jail that is. J/k, I would probably do it this way.
Or you can spend 70 bucks for a replacement glass and digitizer off of ebay and put it on yourself. It is very easy, you just need a steady hand for glueing the new one back on.
And crashing your car is probably out of the question, i am sure your insurance deductible on your car is over 70 bucks. if not then maybe you want a new car too? I would ram into a pole and total my car if I didn't have a deductible.
I have gap insurance. I would have no more car payment woot!
Save your car and walk into traffic, hopefully the guy who hits you has full coverage...and there you go. On the real id go the insurance fraud way, and you'll be insured for any other accident in the future.

[Q] EVO 4G return

So, here's the thing. I bought my EVO at Radio Shack. 2 days after having it, I dropped it and it scratched the screen and marked up the bezel a little bit. I was going to just go get the screen repaired for 35 dollars and then return it at RS since I'm within the 30 days, but Sprint won't fix it cause it's a cosmetic issue, not a functionality thing. I don't want to purposefully break the screen just to get that fixed. If I was to sell the phone for 200 before the end of the 30 days and pay the 200 dollar ETF, would that be possible or would Sprint try to charge me retail for the phone (because the 30 days isn't up).
You can ask.
I read this as "I scratched my phone and now I don't want it."
Call a sprint store anon, and tell them exactly what happened, what you want to do, and how to best handle the situation. I find honesty will get you the best advice.
Close. I scratched the phone when considering current and upcoming phones (Nexus S and Optimus 2X).

I was told that it was cosmetic. Since it doesn't affect the functionality, then they won't. It's not a crack, just some heavy scratches.

Then crack the screen and have a woman take it in there. I bought my mom an evo and 1st day she dropped it caused a thin split down the middle. We also got it from radio shack. She said she walked in sprint store told them what happ and they offered to fix it for free. But when I called they told me I have to use my insurance. Moral of the story is boobs always win no matter how old lol.

You might want to call radioshack and talk to them... I doubt they would take back a refurbished phone when they gave you a brand new phone. I believe the charge if the phone isn't in like new condition and you are returning it should be $35 anyhow..... but there you have a good reason to get your phone from a sprint store (or whatever brand you go with) instead of radioshack/best buy.

So, I went to RS and talked with them. They won't take the phone since it's scratched. Cincinnati. But I found a different solution. I'm going to just end service with Sprint after the 30 days and sell the phone for 250. That'll take care of the ETF at least.

Mother's EVO went through the washer today - What do you think is the best bet?

Hey XDA Members,
So, my mom washed her EVO today, which broke the glass and screen; all it does it vibrates when you turn it on, but no lights/screen/sound after that, so basically dead.
No warranty w/ sprint - after the AMEX accidental warranty.
Options I've come up with are...
-Buy one on clist for $325
-Buy a new one for $400 - $450
-Cancel a line at 16 months left - $160, and the other 2 lines monthly price would go up.
-Add a forth line + buy new EVO on that
-Buy a blackberry on clist - $140ish
What's your ideas?
Thanks!

That's what I meant by warranty/insurance. I told her to get it, but didn't want to pay for it, and it's $7 a month, then $100 for a referb phone.
If you want something like a blackberry curve you should be able to get one for a lot less than $140! not bad phones if you don't mind a super slow almost unusable web browser. Great physical keyboards (and cleanable trackballs They should be like half that price though!

Really I would look for a cheap EVO in craigslist, they can be found cheap if it's a heavily used one but still working good.
Found a brand-new epic on craigslist for $300; that's better than the sole EVO on there for $325.
I would just get another one if you could afford it. 16 months is a long time to go without an Evo. But of course if money is a problem, then black berries really aren't all that bad.
does she really need the power of an evo????
what about something cheaper.. like a HERO..
yes it sucks.. but if you root it..
put on a good ROM... they have gingerbread!!!
it is a good phone for $100 on craigslist
or a LG Optimus S.. on craigslist..

Thought of this, but then stuck paying $10 extra a month for 4G...not that she used it in the first place. Probably needs the 4.3 inch screen or a slide out keyboard to text...so that's why I was thinking the blackberry, not the hero.
Did you try the rice trick? Put a cup of dry rice into a Ziplock bag. Take the battery out of the phone and place both into the bag. Seal it and leave it for 24 hours. It should pull all the moisture out. Pull it out, put it back together and then charge it.
Edit: Sorry... just read the part about the glass being broken. Well, I'll leave this trick posted here in case someone needs it in the future.
^^^ it is too late to try to the rice trick.. if you turn on the phone and it beeps at you!
and of course the broken screen
How long has she had it? If she had it for less than 30 days, could always call Sprint and add the insurance. You would have to wait like a week or so to put in the claim. Or you could call Sprint anyway and see if they could add the insurance anyway even if it is beyond 30 days. They might work with you. Or call Sprint and see if they have any refurbs for temp then add the insurance so if she gets another Evo, and something happens, she is covered. Insurance is always priority. I would never not add insurance to the line that contains a 600.00 phone. For example, I have had Sprint for a long time and have always had insurance on both of my lines. My Evo was stolen along with the charger and my 8GB card was in it. I immediatly called Sprint, reported my phone as stolen so they could restrict the phone to basically being a brick, they then transferred me to asurian where I paid the 100.00 deductible and they understood my phone was stolen. So instead of sending me a refurb and the card and charger, they sent me a brand new Evo in the OEM box and everything like charger and manuals were nice and wrapped. Brand spanking new. If I didn't have the insurance I would have been in the same boat as your Mom. But I would call Sprint and see what they can work out for you. But ADD insurance to the line.
How bout getting your mom a cheap $10 pre-paid phone since she isn't smart enough to NOT wash a $300 phone, especially when she's too cheap to have insurance on it...

Take the phone to a Sprint store and hope that some one there takes mercy upon you and helps you get some kind of deal. If you're met with a no, keep trying, don't loose your cool and be prepared to spend an hour or two. Run options like canceling the current EVO line, then getting a new line with the reduced EVO price. Take your mother with you, get her a cane with a white tip.

[Q] Slide out keyboard keys "peeling off"

I've only had my phone for a couple weeks and the "menu" key on the slide out keyboard.. is falling off. the keys seem to simply be glued onto the keyboard. What do you guys recommend? does this fall under some kind of warranty? any suggestions to fix/replace key/qwerty/phone are appreciated. THanks
If it's less than 30 days, I would just bring it back to the store... or contact whoever you bought it from.
If you have insurance just bring it back and exchange it.. after checking out the keys on me it seems like it would take a pretty good tug to get them off, looks like more then just glue.
Anywho if you don't have insurance there is a 30 day return or a mfgr warranty if you can prove you didn't do it yourself by treating it to rough or something..
i might just have to return it i guess... It came off pretty easily, i mean is stil glued in one corner so I avoid using the slide out as much as i can... and now i discovered that there's something wrong with the screen.... around the center of the screen there is no "touch" I. E when i turn it landscape to type with the touch keyboard i can't press the "Y" I downloaded an app to check it and it "jumps" when i touch in that area, there is no response... would this have to be dealt with by sprint or samsung?
I've had two do it. I rarely use the he keyboard too.

Return it, it is under 30 days...have them give you a new one. You spent good money on the phone and shouldn't have to have a sub-standard phone. Don't settle for them fixing it, demand a new one if they try to just fix it for you.

As far as the Epic goes, TEP is great, either they give you the shell (everything but the mainboard) or a whole new phone... if they want you to wait for a shell to come in 3-5 days, depending on the fail, you can usually get them to swap for a brand new phone. They kept the battery and accessories but still, new phone... no repairs you might have to worry about... Samsung deals with that crap.

Will my tep/ insurance cover this?

Soo I will start out by saying my phone has never been dropped and I rarely use the keyboard but I'm having two issues... first my screen and keyboard wobble quite a bit expectually when I'm using the screen to text etc and it squeeks a little two.... second problem is I have burned in images on my phone.. expecially where the text box and numbers should be in my mms program.. these are still visible if trying to watch a movie for example... so my quest is how will sprint handle this... are they going to make me shell out a 100 for a new phone.. or will the replace/fix it free of charge.. I do pay the 8 a month for insurance fyi.
Thanks for any help you can provide

I don't work for Sprint but your issues are ones I believe they would definitely charge the deductible for, if they agree to replace at all. Your problems arguably fall under 'normal wear & tear' since they don't hinder the normal operation of the phone. They're largely cosmetic.

I'll say this: I dropped mine, its cracked at the bottom comparible to a spider web, and it crashes when the screen turns off, which requires a battery pull/reinsert to get back on agan, and sprnt said they'll replace it for the $100 deductible.

Screens are not covered anymore if they have to be replaced. You don't have to go into a store to make a claim with asurion. If you know that it can't be fixed by a tech then just make the claim online at asurion.com just like insurance sprint never has to verify what's wrong with your phone in order to make a claim.
Wtf they won't cover screens anymore? I mean my issue was over a few months ago but that's exactly what I'm paying for. If I have to pay a deductible of 100 every single time....that's borderline to making it worth cancelling insurance after 1 year because you can just do an early upgrade if your gold. Such bs
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
you guys do realize these are like 400 dollar devices. why is it a big deal to pay a $100 bucks for a bnib device with next day shipping?
Stores will not replace your phone anymore. Must go through asurion online.
I dropped my phone and cracked it. Took it to store and they said yea has to be replaced. Paid 100.00 bucks. Made claim Thursday, got phone Monday. When I made claim said they were out of stock.
I am careful with my phone so I only do the $4 service plan. No deductible this way and I don't drop my phone.
What's the 4 dollar service plan get you if no deductible?

Probably just in-store type repairs only. No lost/stolen and no screen replacement (due to being cracked).
That is my guess.

Haven't read it in a while but that should be it basically. Warrant/defect repair stuff.
Insurance would cover everything else (at least it would effectively, since they don't really care what is wrong if you are paying the deductible).
