Simple enough lol.
I normally have had excellent CS from Sprint, both over the phone, online, and in store, but today I had a flat out horrific chat experience online with them.
The chick knew nothing. I mean NOTHING. She told me to keep checking for updates after I told her I was on the newest update and gave her my version number (1.47.651.1 of course). Then, she lied to me about there not being any 4G coverage in the heart of downtown St. Louis!
I told her the map showed coverage and that my buddy's phone right next to me got 4G while mine didn't (of course it didn't, it has no certs ) and she said that there is no coverage there. The ZIP is 63102 by the way.
Then I told her again that my phone had service there before the update and that my buddy's did right then, and she said some jibberish then closed the chat.
Here's the worst part of the chat:
07/04/2010 04:48:11PM Jesse C: "63102"
07/04/2010 04:48:19PM Agent (Grace S.): "Ok, thank you."
07/04/2010 04:49:05PM Agent (Grace S.): "I am sorry to say that this area is not under the 4g network."
07/04/2010 04:49:26PM Jesse C: "The map shows that it is"
07/04/2010 04:50:33PM Agent (Grace S.): "I have checked with the help of required tool , the are under 63102 do not have the 4g coverage."
07/04/2010 04:51:05PM Jesse C: "I'm looking at the coverage map right now that says it does. My friends phone who was right next to me got 4G service"
07/04/2010 04:51:20PM Agent (Grace S.): "Ok."
07/04/2010 04:52:35PM Agent (Grace S.): "I understand that ."
07/04/2010 04:52:52PM Agent (Grace S.): "I have checked the basic ."
07/04/2010 04:53:33PM Agent (Grace S.): "Due to the technical nature of your concern please contact our technical support to resolve this issue."
07/04/2010 04:53:52PM Agent (Grace S.): "You can contact them at 1-888-211-4727"

What the f*ck does "I have checked the basic ." even mean!?
Jeez Sprint, I was proud of your CS before this. This is just sad.
Anyways, please share your worst experience here.
Regards,
Jesse C.
P.S. Look up the 63102 zip on Sprints coverage maps. It's blanketed by 4G.
Thats pretty bad. I have only had one problem so far with Sprint CS, though I have only called a few times as I just switched to Sprint for the Evo. I called CS a couple days after I got the phone activated, and told the rep that I wanted to add discounts to my account, either school or work. She told me that id get a 13% discount with work, and that SHE would apply it to my account, and that it would be on my on the bill after next, and to not worry about it. She was a pretty nice lady though.
I called back a week later, and asked the progress of it and if it was in the system. This lady said there was no record of me even calling, and there were no notes..
After 3 calls and 3 stores (got the run around) I finally managed to got somebody that would send me the damn replacement phones.
However, she talked like a robot.
After every single sentence she would said: "We apologize for any inconvenience we may cause you, thank you for waiting" Never even put me on hold, just said that after she would say something else.
She also asked me 3 times "How is your day today?" And all 3 times I replied by saying "Oh, it's going pretty good, just got done with a golf tourney"
Those are just two of the things she said exactly the same multiple times while I was on the phone. It was kind of creepy how she seemed not to remember that she had already asked me the same **** several times already and how it was always word for word.

That would be a pain in the neck. I've had similar things happen with AT&T though.
They had the worst in store people ever (rude, hateful, and just plain ignorant of there being anything besides the iPhone) and over the phone wasn't much better. At one point I called to add the $20 unlimited texting plan to one line of the family plan, and she kept insisting that I add the $30 unlimited plan for the whole account. I turned her down 3 times, and she still added it. I had to call back and have it changed.
^^ Those things make me happy I switched.
BTW: @oOflyeyesOo I noticed you're in St. Louis too, whereabouts you at? What kinda speeds do you pick up on 4G?
EDIT: @hrshycro Ha yeah that sounds pretty creepy. My in-store Sprint rep was really full of himself lol but hell he was funny. He would mess with all the customers though, which could be annoying if you aren't the joking type. He messed with an old lady about picking out a red phone, which I thought was a little over the line, but otherwise he was pretty good.
Everytime I call I get someone in the philippines. I'm assuming that country because at&t has call centers there. I always get someone who doesn't know what they are doing and always get different answers. I just hit my 30 day period today and I need to swap my EVOs and RS tells me that they will swap it after the 30 days. All I know is that they better or else someone is going to get earth slammed.

I've actually had good experiences so far with Sprint. All of the talk I've heard about the service and the customer service have been proven wrong. I got my Evo and my girlfriend's Evo by walking in.

My 30 days is up too, so they batter refund me money whenever I get the replacement mailer to send them back in and they get them...
Usually, I have had great customer service. The only problems are when they want to test my cell remotely, and they ask me to call from a land line. And I don't have a land line. So the test cannot be performed, and I have to go to the Sprint store. They assume you have a land line at home, which fewer people have each day.
I have been with them over 10 years.
Whenever I bug them about a fee or something, they give me credit. One day I even took my Blackberry, and they simple replaced it for a new one. I had no insurance and the BB was 6 months old.

That's awesome! Other than what happened today, I've actually typically had really great experiences with them in store & online, so I'm hoping this is just a one time thing lol.
It's nice to hear that most people have had no issues.
Well, I remembered another problem.
I found a Sprint cell phone in the snow. I called *2 and I told them, I found a cell phone.
They told me what was my cell number. I said, well, I don't know, I just found it and I would like you to call the owner at home, or send him an email.
They insisted that I should give them my name, which I did, and they told me that it does not match the name on the cell phone.
I replied that of course, because it was a Sprint cell phone I found in the snow. Somebody dropped it.
They told me there was nothing they could do about it.
------
Eventually the cell phone's battery died, but it happened to be just like my cell phone, so I put in my battery and waited for the call, she called...and then I met this nice Japanese girl at a corner that insisted that I take like 50 bucks. I didn't.
But really, customer representatives are like robots. When there is something unexpected, they have no clue about what to do. And I was disappointed that if I lose my cell, and somebody calls Sprint, they cannot do anything about it.
(they may be lazy.)

It really wouldn't surprise me if they only knew enough to get through basic convos. Most of my Sprint CS calls were with American sounding people (or people that spoke excellent English one way or another) but we've all had those "me no speaky" types if you'll forgive the stereotype
That chat rep I spoke to sure seemed to stumble through the language. It could have almost been machine translated from any language better.
Sprint sent me a touch pro 2 replacement after mine killed itself. Half of the keys wouldn't work so I called sprint up to tell them they sent me a broken phone. They told me to take it to the nearest corporate sprint store which is about 45 minutes away. So I get there and explain the situation and their response was "Nope, can't fix it". At this point i was pissed. So i went home and called sprint again. This time, my mother talked to the service rep. She yelled at the damn rep and they said they would send me a brand new phone. When the new one got here. There were big blue spots all over the inside of the screen. I just bought a palm pre and kept the replacement as a back up.
Sprint has been good to me...at least better than AT&T was.
my mom has been a sprint customer for like 13 years and whenever she talks to sprint cs reps it's over the phone... and whenever she uses up her minutes and her bill is high, she just calls and they'll cut it. but of course when i get my evo the treatment changes all of a sudden. the first time i called sprint it was bcuz my evo was bricked, so they said take it to bestbuy cuz we can't do anything for you. that conversation lasted literally 1 minute bcuz the girl didn't know what she was doing and she told me to take out the battery wait 2 days and then try to turn the phone on. i told her that this wasn't going to solve anything so she yelled goodbye and hung up
Geez. Do you guys expect the customer representatives to know every knicks and knacks of this phone? It's not they're fault they're given scripts and are under tight restrictions as to what they can do and say. Sure they may be seem robotic, but can't blame them. All customer representatives who just talks on the phone the whole will eventually sound like one.
Just saying that you guys are being a little harsh towards them. I would very much rather talk to them than actual robots.. er automated systems.

I live in the Ballwin area, near chesterfield. I get a 4G signal here, but its very weak signal, I never get any bars. Yesterday I was getting a bit better speeds when running speedtests. I was getting 2500-3000 down, and only 150 up... But a week before I was constantly getting speed tests that were in the hundreds, so atleast its getting a little better. Its still iffy though, I still don't get a constant connection, as when I try to download torrents, it might get to 150kb/s, but then drops back down fast, then slowly goes up again and back down, never constant.

Hey at least you get 4G! I'm down around Festus and we aren't on the list until Sprint is scheduled to upgrade the surrounding St. Louis areas until next May! Haha
Its nice to see those speeds. Before I screwed up my 4G the highest I ever hit was 2500, with most of them being about 1500-2000, speeds I can hit on 3G here.
Also, my torrents are always fluctuating like that over my 3G connection, its kind of a bummer lol

I honestly can't tell if that is sarcasm or not LOL!
I went to the store the other day to get my phone replaced because the power button is lower then what it should be making it difficult to turn on. The store where I originally bought it from ( a corporate store) said they would but I was moving so I didn't have time. So anyways I tried to get it replaced and some b*tch said it was a cosmetic defect and not a functionality issue. So she would not replace it. I eminently called Sprint cs and they said it would be replaced but the store would still not do it. On top of that cs said that the evo could only be replaced in store. I will only be within my 30 days for a few more days. BS I guess I have to get it from my original store.

Yeah. There's a lot of jack asses out there that believe they are entitled for something because of whatever lame excuse they can think of. "You owe me..." I do have a lot of patience, plus the $ is definitely worth it - in commission alone i've made about 10 thousand so far this year
while I fully agree with you, i work technical support at an inbound call center, there are plenty of businesses that are worse than the customers. You know the aggravation when you have to call ATT and you are on the phone for an hour because they screwed up. oh and then they want you to stay on the line because they can't call you when its fixed when it was their problem in the first place. then you have to hangup and eat and call back the next day for another hour.

Well its back up right now (i think) i dont have any one to call right now but the network was down until 20:45~20:50 CST in SE WI. my friend called me on a land-line and told me he was trying to call me. The data on my phone worked the hole time. But 99.9% of out going calls failed and 100% incoming calls failed 100% SMS fail!!!!! I did get two calls to go threw to a AT&T land-line
NOW HEARS THE PROBLEM (SPRINT CAN YOU HEAR ME!) why cant Sprint have emailed us all i understand ith happens and stuff brakes & goes down BUT WHY THE HELL couldn't they of EMAILED us all to let us know that people would not be able to get a hold of us with are SPRINT PHONES!!!!!!
Check the "No data 3G" & the other problem you had on the poll if your data & voice/sms was down.
So lets hears it how many people had no Voice/SMS today? And it would be nice to put your State/City or the Area your in.
Thanks i just kinda want to see the numbers
I'm so ready to go back to Verizon 6 years with them & never a problem (but i REALLY like my Epic :-/ )

127.0.0.1 loopback ;-)
Roam Control is the fix. Force your phone off the sprint network.
Humm I would have got the app if I had known about it on Friday :-/ but now that its back up idk if I really need it.
So I take it your a fan of the app, has it saved ur phone calls when sprint went down before?
I use roam control while I am at work since I only get 1 bar to nothing while there if I am on sprint but if I switch to roaming I have full signal. Also helps out a lot with battery too. If I leave it on auto I leave work with 20% left and that's with out using my phone. If I switch to roaming I usually leave with a lot more left.

Cool sounds like that would help my battery when my ohone is sitting on my main PC desk. Its always going back andforth. I know there's. A ton of USB ports there but why plug it in every time iam using my computer.
P.S. its the $3.99 app in the markit ?
I had no issues at all (or any other time, really, except maybe once, and that issue was specific to the Hero). I'm not in SE WI, I'm up near Green Bay. Though looking at the link to the Sprint site it looks like I would have been affected as well. But I had no issues at all. And frankly, even if it was down, I didn't notice.
And I don't really see what you're getting so upset about to be honest. Yeah, it sucks when stuff goes down, but I think the "I"M GOING BACK TO VERIZON" statement was a little extreme. Have you had other problems with Sprint? All in all, it was down for what, 10 minutes? That's nothing. The longest I ever had an issue was back when I still used the stock ROM on my hero, and MMS wasn't working for a few weeks. Honestly, though, what good would them sending an email have done? That late in the evening, most people are eating, or out doing whatever (bars, partying, etc), not checking their email, so by the time most people got the email, the issue would already have been resolved. And they did put out a tweet from @sprint, their official account : http://twitter.com/sprint. Sure, it's not really a channel most people follow, and probably one of the last places people would expect to look, but the point is that they acknowledged the issue. And it looks like the whole 10 minutes you were affected was actually far less than others, I read some users stating that the outage lasted all day.
Basically, what I'm saying is that I've had a solid experience with Sprint the last 3 years or so, I'm not going to switch carriers just because of something like this. They've always been super nice about giving me credits for all sorts of things, ringtones/games that I couldn't transfer from one phone to another, and a few other issues. I feel like their customer service has always been top notch for me, and one day of not being able to talk/text is really no big deal for me.

Yeah it is the one in the market for $3.99. Just make sure you plan is set up for roaming otherwise you might end up with charges you didnt plan on. Especially when it comes to data roaming.

I see your points, But it was down for hours on a Friday NOT 10 minutes & the 3G was still up so i would have seen said email. This has not been Totally fixed yet Visual Voicemail is down right now. You can leave me a vmail & i will get it if i dial 1 on the phone but theirs no notification that you have x number of vmails
So if your phone is having voice mail problems its most likely NOT your phone and its still sprint having problems. One sprint tech told me it was the hole U.S. and another tech said it was still from Fridays (SE WI) problem & that they are still working to fix it
SirRipo your right its not really getting that upset about its just a phone
For me I have everything to complain about when it comes to Sprint service. This outage that just happened on friday night really set me over the top. The only thing that I'm happy about is the fact that it affected lots of people and not just people in my "neighborhood". I live in South Milwaukee, WI and there is a tower somewhere near my house that FAILS at least 3 to 4 times a year. And when it fails I'm not saying hours of service lost, I'm talking DAYS!!! Every time it happens I call Sprint and they do a test on the towers in my area and I hear the same reply out of their mouths when they figure out the problem, they say, "wow, now that's not a good thing" Well if it's not a good thing then why does it continue to happen every 3 months or so. And the sucky thing about it is the fact it usually happens for the entire weekend. At first I thought that was happening all over again, but this issue was different and affected lots of people. So I guess my question is if this happens again, which I know it will from the track record, do you think I would be able to opt out of my contract without having to pay a termination fee? Sprint says that it's up to the customer service rep that handles my termination of service call whether or not I would be charged a fee or not. The way I see it is if the service continues to fail where I live for days on end why should I have to pay a fee? I know that T-Mobile has 4G up and running here in Milwaukee with the HSPA+ and Sprint doesn't have 4G here at all, and who knows now long it's going to take them to get it. Sprint in my area either works, and works very well, or it's just not there at all, there is no in between.
jaygraffix Thats BS!
i was with sprint years back & i was never happy with them then but i thought that maybe things have changed. I have some time in my 30 days left to dump there ass, I just thought the price was right. (and i love the Epic) But after this BS and hearing jaygraffix problems in a city just a little south of me that i'am in all the time i just may have to move on to there competition.
The fact is sprint nextel is a multi billion dollar corporation and its not going to hit there bottom line to completely replace the tower by jaygraffix house! And i should not have to talk with 6 sprint reps about the VVM not working today & have the finale rep offer me a hole $8.00 credit when the Tech support rep i was talking to before OFFERED ME $25.00 WTF and because i wanted to talk with a CS manager (and did) he only gives me the $8 WTF! less than the guy i was talking to before him! NOW TELL ME YOU WOULD NOT BE PISSED AFTER THAT HAPPENED TO YOU
Maybe if every one in SE WI would dump them all on the same day they would take a hint! (fees & all be DAMED) When i started this tread i was really hoping to see 1000's of hits on the poll but i guess there are just not that many people on this forum from around my area. I Totally see now why Verizon costs what it does.
First of all thanks to you guys and this forum for teaching me a lot about my new mt4g. I have never owned a "smartphone" before this, my last phone was a nokia 5310, so this was all new to me.
I permarooted the phone ( don't know why yet) and have it fairly customized with a few exceptions. My next project is to install a theme without it looking terrible, I used metamorph and installed a theme and it totally messed up. And of course I want to mess with roms, but I'll give that time.
Anyways....

In this picture I really want to get rid of that bottom bar ( sorry I don't know what it's called). I've used adw and launcher pro and it worked successfully but I want to get rid of that bar without those programs, is it possible?
and the last question
2. When I signed up for this phone I got the unlimited plan of $30 a month. Well I recently lost my job and want to go to $15 a month for 200mb. Some may think it is not worth it but I think for me it is very much so. I don't facebook or surf the web, download things or any of that stuff. The only data I use intentionally is for updating the weather and news, and checking email on occasion. Here's where my question is. I notice that in every document with this phone it mentions "wifi calling". Does this mean also that if I'm connected through wifi at my house that the data will flow through my wifi network instead of tmobile's network? At my house, school, my parents house, and girlfriends house all have wifi. I'm curious because I've asked tmobile reps and of course they won't give me a clear answer because they want the $30 unlimited out of me.
I would appreciate answers to any of these drawn out questions. Thanks and I hope to learn plenty more.
I can help ya with question #2. the "Wi-Fi Calling" lets you use a wi-fi network to make phone calls when you have little or no cell signal. what you need to use data would be wi-fi network. if you go under "settings">select "Wireless & Networks">select "Wi-Fi">select "Wi-Fi settings" from there select what ever network you want connect to. any time you are on wi-fi you are completely off TMO's net so it doesn't count against your 200MB, it will only count against that when you are on cell network (seeing G, E, 3G or H)
edit : I still have my red Xpress Music 5310 as one of my many backup phones and my wife still has her white/purple Xpress Music 5300 as her backup, pretty good phones for "dumb" phones
thanks for the response regarding wifi. That's what I was doing and thought that was the case, just wanted to be sure. Like I said I think Tmobile just wanted my extra $15.
You're right about the 5310 phone though, my girlfriend still uses is and I still have mine as a backup. It has great reception, sound quality, and VERY compact.
Thanks.
If you call and ask nicely, TMO might give you the $20 unlimited plan, if you can afford the extra $5, it's def worth it IMHO.
Call TMO (611) and say "cancel my service" which takes you to retention. Ask for the special android $20 unlimited plan.

Ya thanks for the advice and I am a very nice person ( not just when I want to be) but It didn't work. The only thing they offered me is a free month of data on my gf's phone ( the 5310), which is pretty much worthless lol. But you are correct, if I could get unlimited for $20 I would go for it.
Try to call again. Sometimes it's just about who you talk to. Sometimes a different agent will give you a different answer.
cool will do, I'll be persistant.
Off topic, is it worth over/underclocking your phone?
EDIT: sorry I don't mean to bog this forum down with questions, just having a new phone like this is exciting.
Def keep trying. First time they offered me this phone for 149 then talked to another dude and got it for 99. Its all in who you talk to.... Dont forget to mention how your 4g speeds are slower than your buddies evo 4g on sprint and your dissatisfied.... Etc etc etc... You get the idea.
Underclock.ovrclk is up to you. My old nexus one was stock and rooted but I eventually ovrclk ... Haha im going to keep my mytouch phone stock but rooted for now I dont need 1.7ghz from this phone to play angry birds. I think u should read up on android first as well.
will do. I didn't ever plan on overclocking it, hell I never even overclocked my computer because I never saw the need to. I was just curious as to why people would do it, I guess a simple google search could of yielded me my question. Thanks again

Biggest reason people overclock is they can. Its like having that sports car that is plenty fast and then tossing on a supercharger. It just makes it more fun!! This phone doesn't need to be overclocked but it does make it even snappier. I am running just a stock de-odexed rom and I am overclocked. Still have all the bloatware and everything and I am throwing down like 2650-2800 quadrant scores and 58 mflops on linpack consistantly. While it is plenty responsive fully stock, it is even more responsive overclocked. Thats one of the great things though about being rooted. Along with being able to add themes and mods to your phone you can also revert back from most mods very easily.
You should give the overclocking a try and see what you think. Just make sure you have a nandroid backup done before you start any mods.(You should make a nandroid backup anyway) If you dont like the overclock just go into Clockwork recovery and select backup/restore go into advanced and pick one of your backups. Go to restore boot and hit enter, there you go. You dont have to do a wipe or do a full restore to replace the kernel.
Also keep in mind, I dont think most, if any metamorph themes will work on this phone while it is running sense. (unless some people make some). You will end up seeing more of that stuff for CM Roms probably. This phone is pretty new so it is still building its development community. With all the other high end phones out it will be a slower process than it was with the G1 but it will happen. We are already starting to see some cool stuff!
thanks, that does make sense. I have done a full backup with rom manager so maybe I should grow a pair and try a few more things with this phone like overclocking. Would you just say that OC mainly makes games run faster, and possibly the internet app?
On your second comment I have been noticing that and wondered if it was because it was such a new phone. I don't see many roms, themes, or much of anything ( if I actually know what I'm doing). It will be fun to sit back and see what rolls out though, and only wished I had the knowledge to help in the processes. By that way I got the big bulks bar off the bottom off the screen by using a loader named "Go Launcher". It seems to run better than the others I tried and I finally figured out how remap the genius button.
Thanks for hearing me out, I feel like sense finals are done and I'm jobless right now I have so much time to work on this phone and get so excited when I figure something new out. Peace.

Please post questions in Q&A section.
hey same thing happened to me. in October 09 my 2 year agreement finished and the month after one of my 2 phones broke cus i dropped it so i went to the tmo store and got the motorola qlic for 200$. i had to start my 2 years again, i didnt mind this cus i was getting a new phone anyways and the other one i just kept it the same cus i was just waiting for it to brake so i could get a new one and renewal until then. when i got it it was when the unlimited data was still for 20$ a month. like 1 or 2 months after the HTC HD2 came out with that big ass screen and with a 16gb memory card and all that for only 200$, so i was really pissed off, so i called tmobile liying that i wanted to cancel my 2 lines cus i was really disappointed that for the same price that i got my tiny phone i could of gotten a way better one, i also lied about that i went to sprint and got offered 2 evo's with all the data crap and unlimited msg and 1500 minutes for 5 bucks less than what i was paying with tmobile (i had only 700 shared minutes for 69.99$, internet in only 1 phone, inssurance in 1 phone and unlimited fam msg for 20$, my total bill was 118.00$ a month) and that i was gonna get the evo's for free lol. soooo... they told me to hold on blah blah blah!! after 3 minutes on hold they told me that they could hook me up with 100 minutes less for 49.99$ but with unlimited myfaves on both lines for free plus internet on both phones for 20$ each (at this time unlimited data was 30$ already). inssurance on both phones, 10$ unlimited fam msg giving me a total of 110$ a month. so even though i liked what they offered me i was still not fully happy cus i still didnt have a bad ass phone so i told them that i wasnt gonna stay cus sprint had a better phone and for free (a big lie), so they asked me what phone from tmobile i liked? so i said that the only phone close enough to the evo was the HD2 and that my wife liked the mytouch 3g slide. after another 5 minute hold they came back offering me the slide for 65$ even though it was not out in stores yet, plus the HD2 for 150$ even though i only had 6 months since i upgraded my line and i wasn't eligible for an upgrade, plus the price lowered to 110$. so what do you think i said? ILLLLLLL TAKE ITTTTTTT hahaha. 6 months after, now i have 2 brand new Mytouch 4g lol but thats a different story on how i got this lol.
so bottom line is, keep trying and they will come through my friend.
ps: i added my works health plan and i got a 10% discount bringing my bill to 100 a month!!!
someone please let me know if they got something better than me!!

there are actually quite a few roms out there such as CM, ice glacier, MIUI and a few others. I would give those a try, it's not hard to do as you say u already managed to root the phone.
overclocking/underclocking for me is a pretty neat way to manage the phone's power. if u feel u need more speed, overclock it to 1.4 or something..when the phone is off, underclock it to save some battery life
I've been a bit of a smartphone junkie for the last four years, but now that I have a Xoom (on Verizon) my Evo barely gets used. I'm considering porting my number to Google Voice and paying the Sprint ETF, then pointing the number at a cheap pre-paid dumbphone. Something with just voice and basic texting, and good battery life. It looks like I'd recoup the ETF in a few months and save a bunch over the remaining 18 months of my Sprint contract.
There would be both pros and cons to this, most definitely, but for some reason I find the idea extremely attractive. Maybe it just seems like it would be futuristic or I'd be getting away with something.
I saw one person in here mentioning that they did this, anyone else considering it? Anyone else go tablet & dumbphone and have any advice or protips? I'm worried there's something terribly wrong with this plan that I'm not thinking of, or else more people would do it.
yeah ive been thinking about it too. The only reason i will stick to my droid 2 is tethering.
i thought about it, but the reality is as much as i use the tablet, i still use my phone quite a bit.
there are many times it is easier to just look at something on my phone (which is usually in my hand unless i am driving or riding my motorcycle) than it is to pull out the tablet.
Tethering and size will keep a smartphone on me.
Yeah, I gotta still have a phone. I'm not going to carry a tablet around with me everywhere.

Exactly, if you simply buy a wifi only tablet and keep the smartphone, you can keep your monthly payments light by only paying for one device
This is exactly what I did. My phone is a Samsung Gusto. I use Google Voice through it still, if I want to place a call, I place it through the Xoom to have consistency with numbers. Also means I don't have to put any contacts in my Gusto. I have my Xoom with me everywhere I go, purchased a bag for it(a murse if you will, though it's a US Army map bag), also carry my Droid and my wallet in said bag. Works well enough for me and I use my tablet less in public than I did my Droid, which I see as a plus My phone only costs 9.99/mo on our family plan(I've got my mom and sister on there as well), so $30/month for the Xoom(1gb plan plus the stupid extra line fee), insurance and the 9.99/mo puts me lower than where I was with my Droid.

Interesting - when you say you place the call through the Xoom, are you using the GVoice website or the apk that's floating around to initiate the call?

Website, the APK won't dial out to another phone, it does nothing when you tell it to 'call'
I will be keeping my Droid X and will definitely not need a 4g phone.
I'll be doing the same thing here real soon. I have a LG Dare that will work just fine. Everything else can happen on the xoom.
Not here, I'll be keeping a smartphone because when I'm in a meeting or in the office and I'm required to have my laptop, then I need something lightweight to keep in touch with my personal contacts, social networks, etc. Also, going to a party or bar hopping with my Xoom might not be the best thing, especially after a few drinks. I can't imagine asking for a number and pulling out this big ass tablet like "Excuse me while I whip this out" lmao!!

How did it work out for you? LOL!!!
Another option is to go to a carrier like T-Mobile where you can get a data only plan on a smartphone, then use Google Voice and SIP/VoIP. That'd probably be about 40 bucks a month. You could tether your Xoom to that for free.
An even cheaper alternative, if you can carry the Xoom around, is to cancel your phone plan entirely and tether your phone to your Xoom. 20 bucks a month for the 1GB data plan should be plenty.
I did have a fantasy of having a 4G enabled phone, unlimited plan, and tether everything to that, but battery life is the killer. The Xoom has far superior battery life. Even a Mifi will only last you for a couple hours. But yes, eventually my dream is to have one device that lasts all day and projects 4G wifi to whatever device I happen to be using at the time. At that point works just as well if you pull out your MacBook and need to tether.

I have my Xoom dialing through Sipdroid with pbxes and i can make calls just not receive them at this point.
I use CSipSimple -> SipGate -> Google Voice to make calls and the reverse to receive them. Both directions work. However, with SipGate they allow you receive calls for free, making calls costs money. So, if you use the Google Voice website to place a call, it will call you back then connect you, which SipGate coutns as a free received call. There is an app called GVCallback that does this much easier, but it integrates with the normal phone dialer and so doesn't work with the Xoom at this point.
I'm currently using a voyager and my xoom and I'm ok with the combo but I do miss a smart phone especially since I find the thunderbolt tempting

She was actually all about my tablet at the bar, checking it out, talking to me and such... My friend was trying to tell me she was taken but I was too inebriated to get the subtle hints, so as you can imagine, it did not go too well I think it would have gone much better if she weren't taken
I've been thinking of something like this too. My EVO is okay.. but a little too finicky for 3G or 4G tethering. I read that there will be a data only option with the thunderbolt. I might consider that.
