Yesterday, I was driving home and had my EVO plugged in to charge and was listening to streaming radio. All of a sudden I noticed my EVO was blinking, alternating from green to orange. It wasn't showing the charging icon either. The phone was pretty hot too.
I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it started to blink again with no charging icon.
Anyone else experience that?
Everything I've read about that, has indicated that it's an overheating issue. Possibly because you were charging and running the radio at the same time.
Experienced that on an OC'd Hero a few times, it means overheated. Unplug it and/or stop streaming for a while to let it cool off. Also taking the battery cover off and maybe even the battery out the get air circulation in there isn't a bad idea. Overheated batteries shorten their lives, but I believe that have the get very overheated and this is a protection against that, hence why the charging cut out.
Thanks. That makes perfect sense!

This happens to me all the time as I have my Evo mounted up on the windshield ala GPS style in sunny So. Cal... I have a secondary albeit less convenient mount in front of the ACTION duct for such occasions that it overheats... please note.... THIS IS REAL BAD FOR THE BATTERY letting it get overheated to begin with so either start cooling beforehand or expect a lesser performing battery.
Did you have a case on it when this happened? Or did you have it mounted on the windshield as the above poster? Just curious...

Yeah, I have the Seidio Innocase on it and it was mounted on my windshield. Also, I live in AZ and it was about 100 degrees yesterday, LOL.
Heh, makes sense... The case might actually help to an extent (keeps direct sunlight away) but having it on the windshield probably doesn't... I'm considering a car mount but my windshield is super sloped ('07 2-dr Civic), not sure it'd be comfortable. It gets pretty hot here in PR too, tho not quite as hot as AZ...

Thought I would ask this.
Lately, when my Hero is connected to a car charger, I would sometimes get a blinking amber light (it will coincide with a blinking green light, which I know is new mail or message notification). This usually happens when I'm streaming a radio station or using Pandera while using a bluetooth car adapter.
I have looked around for any documentation on this blinking amber light, but to no avail. When I've had a lack of power (for instance, from doing the same things using a USB cable connected to a computer), I would get a message on the phone saying there's insufficient power to run everything and that I need to plug the phone into an A/C outlet.
Thought maybe one of you may know what that is. Seems to stop when I disconnect the car charger, so I'm pretty sure it has something to do with that.
Thanks.
I too have experienced this behavior. From what I gather I think it is related to the battery over heating.

Not sure why its overheating, but it always happens when I an tethering over wifi and have the phone charging at the same time. It also happened to me once when using the navigation app and charging at the same time. The battery was hot to the touch.

The battery itself isn't capable of handling the powerdrawn from the wifi tethering. I noticed that it stopped doing this when I got the 1800mah batter from mugen.

I have the 3600mah from Seidio and it does it. I did have this issue with my stock battery as well.
It's not that the battery can't handle the power draw, because it can. The heat is coming from the CPU and antennas which are working serious overdrive when WiFi tethering.

Anyway to remedy this or do I just have to basically deal with it?
It means some sort of battery problem. My girlfriend dropped her phone in a cup of coffee and it flashed amber-green-amber-green before I told her to pull the battery so it didn't fry.

Well, I didn't drop the phone nor the battery in anything. And it's strange that I've seen this issue on two different batteries (the original stock battery and now this one). And it only seems to be happening with the car charger.
I'm going to put another car charger in the car and see if that helps.

no scratches, nothing. i'd like to see what these things are capable of.

I accidentally dropped mine about four feet straight down onto a concrete driveway. It landed face down, with the screen hitting directly onto the driveway. Have one very tiny chip in the glass (about the size of a grain of sand), but the phone still works. No cracks or other scratches.

Been using my hd2 as a sat nav for a few days and noticed when it is plugged into the cigarette lighter socket the phone generates a lot of heat, almost too hot to touch. Anyone else had this problem? The charger is the official HTC one.
hey,
I had the same problem, albeit with a non-HTC USB charger.
It might have been the combination of being on charge, being heavily used (Screen always on with Co-Pilot and music and occasionally camcorder [scenery was great]) and driving through Monument Valley in 100 degrees plus. The sun through the screen will have something to do with it. Although it did it on 'normal' sunny days as well.
I noticed something was wrong when the battery stopped charging and the LED started flashing orange.
I don't have a car and this was in a hire car for only a few days, so I didn't get the chance to find out which or if all of the above caused the heating.
cheers

Same solution here and it's working till now (1 month)
i think it happen to every hd2 with heay use when using gps and charging at the same time. i always turn on AC condition and let the cold air blows to my hd2.
It's normal for the phone to become hot when many hardware intense programs are running at once. The best thing you can do is stick it near your air con vent as mentioned by other posters.
Ok thanks, obvious thing to do Despite the heat, it still worked perfectly normal.
anybody else have any issue with the screen not being responsive when charging? i was charging up the phone today and when it got to full or close to full i noticed that it didnt respond to every touch and it was very slow when it did respond...very weird...and im starting to think that the screen is not glass which actually bothers me

The touchscreen is glass. Period.
Now that that's aside, how would being glass or plastic have any relation at all to the problem you are experiencing?
no relation, just wasnt sure if it was glass or not so i threw it in there lol just noticed i have a small bubble under the glass too ahhh
Could be the charger. Sometimes the diodes go bad and allow ac voltage to leak through. This has made my g1 screen act very strange when connected to a specific charger.
also note the screen is only touch with it sense heat so cold fingers will cause this problem also

Do you mean charging via usb from a computer? Was the computer pluged in to ac? The thing of it is that all of the rectifiers/transformers are made out of really cheap parts. Diodes can and do leak you might never knoww until you plug in something sensitive enough to notice (capacitive touchscreen). Most high end electronics have capacitors to soak this stuff up, but I'm not sure phones have enough space to add capacitors. In a pc the motherboard has caps on it but power supply doesn't .
Also of note is that the battery can soak this stuff up too but as batt voltage comes closer to charging voltage ( like when nearing full charge) this ability deminishes. Its bad for the life of the batt and phone if this issue is a supply voltage fluctuation problem btw.
So my main complaint about the nexus 1 was the crazy digitizer. I am sitting here playing pocket legends and all of a sudden my screen starts going crazy just like on the nexus 1. I ran screen test toolkit and on the trace test i got sharp vertical lines that shot out from where my finger was tracing. I did have the phone plugged in at the time and since unplugging it seems to have gone away but the is reason enough to concern. Anyone else had this issue? May just take my phone back and get a replacement just in case.
Update: as much as I feel like a bonehead for admitting this I found the culprit. Apparently the charger i was using is not playing nice with the nexus s. It is the same charger i use for my nexus 1 an apparently it has a different power output that the nexus s doesn't like very much. Hope my mistake will help others.
I tried charging over USB at a friend's house on his dinosaur iMac, the screen started acting completely screwy as well.
this is really an intresting behavior. i didnt know a scren could do such a thing in different charger.. . live and learn
yea, why does this do this? I wonder can it be fixed with software
Why would you even try to charge it with something else since a wall charger came with it.
Because you can charge an Android phone via USB cable?
That's I think an official feature of Android.
And it MUST WORK WELL!
If not, then it is a bug in the software or hardware
I read a lot about this reports, anyone post into Google official forum?

Yes, max amp from USB is 0.5A. Typical output for smartphone chargers is 1A. But this shouldnt be a problem, and also less amp means longer batterylife on the long run cause it doesnt stresses battery as much.

I think it's because the touchscreen on the NS seems to be more sensitive than most phones (I can get it to register input without even touching the screen sometimes) that it gets disrupted by other sources of electrical conductivity... such as the charger. Mine is ok, never really tried with the charger plugged in though. I ran multitouch visible test and I was satisfied with the tracking, it's the same if not better than the Vibrant's, which can handle 5 simultaneous inputs.
Has anyone noticed that their wireless charging orb is slipping?
The flatter the desk, the less it will slip. That desk is pretty flat. I wanted to keep the charger on another desk which has a slight incline, but after about 3-4 minutes, my Nexus 4 stops charging. And after another couple of minutes, it will actually fall onto the desk (and hopefully not on the floor). I even made sure there was no oils from my skin on the surfaces by cleaning them beforehand.
Pretty frustrating for a $60 charger. They really should have used magnets in this thing.

Hi quentin0,
I have the exact same issue you are having. I got my charger today. I used it at work for about an hour or 2 with no issues then took the charger home and now my phone will not stick to the charger.
After a minute to a minute and a half, the phone is on the night stand no longer charging... (slipped of the charger)
I've had so many issues with my phone which had to be replace 3 times that I am just returning the charger for a refund.
Needless to say that I will never buy LG again nor a "Nexus" branded device.
That's fairly amazing slippage. You should get an Ikea desk with adjustable legs for a special tilt. Is it humid in your location? I wonder what factors cause this because I've tried bumpers and cases and they all stick right on there perfectly.
Had mines on the charger for over an hour with different types of cases (nillkin, official bumper and no case) called phone numerous times and sent messages to see phone. Phone never moved.

Maybe I should take a video of mine which does not stick at all.... There are absolutely no magnet in this and as nbell13 said, the silicon ring is what is supposed to hold the device just like a suction cup would stick to a piece of glass...
Did you just place the phone on the charger? What if you tried pushing the phone into the charger a bit instead of just placing it on there? The ring is rubber which would deform slightly if you have the phone on there and then apply pressure, and that deformation might act as a suction cup which would give you better grip. I don't have the charger so I can't test this, but for anyone who does can you try this and see if it's any harder to remove (indicating a better grip and less slipping) compared to just placing the phone on the charger?
That's really strange. I got mine today and it holds the phone very well on my nightstand. In fact, I was surprised how well. I also have an Energizer wireless charger that I used on the same nightstand and if I don't use a case, the phone slips right off. I suggest returning it for another one.

I have the LG, Energizer, and now the orb. Best bang for the buck, IMO is the LG charger. Looks cleaner but doesn't angle the phone without being creative like using a tablet stand to hold the LG charger and then the phone will just lay on top of it vertically.
However, having the orb, it does look cool on my desk. The footprint of the orb is really small compared to the LG. For now my LG is at home on the nightstand, the poor Energizer is now stowed away for travel and the Orb is sitting on my desk at work. And for the Energizer, a naked Nexus 4 will def slip off because of it's smooth surface. It literally hydroplanes off the charger. And the Energizer is angled downward as well so having a case or even a back protector will be a must when using the Energizer charger.
Does my orb slip? No. Sux that others have that issue. Not sure why.
Mine is also slipping. I think the magnet is not strong enough on my orb
Why are you placing the phone so high on the charger? Of course it will slide down sitting that high up, you should align the wireless charger with the center of the back on the phone where the wireless charging is. Make a video with your phone sideways and centered on the charger I bet it won't slip.

I don't understand this either. I will say, mine stick, and doesn't slip, but u don't have to put it on the orb that high. Just tested min, and I can put it on the orb, with the bottom of the phone touching the desk, and it continues to charge. I would think this would stop ur sliding. I would still get urs replaced. Along with being sticky, I can feel a slight pull of magnets on mine... Could this be related to phone hardware revision? mines rev 11. I think I read only 11, and 12 are qi certified? Anyone confirm this?
If the phone is charging there will be a slight magnetic attraction, regardless of whether or not there are magnets in the orb or the nexus. When a device is inductively charged there will be a magnetic force between the two coils.
