Has anyone noticed that their wireless charging orb is slipping?
The flatter the desk, the less it will slip. That desk is pretty flat. I wanted to keep the charger on another desk which has a slight incline, but after about 3-4 minutes, my Nexus 4 stops charging. And after another couple of minutes, it will actually fall onto the desk (and hopefully not on the floor). I even made sure there was no oils from my skin on the surfaces by cleaning them beforehand.
Pretty frustrating for a $60 charger. They really should have used magnets in this thing.

It has magnets on it....
There has to ALWAYS be someone with a problem with using the product wrong.
Just find a flat desk to put it on.
I dont know how yours is coming off, but mine lifts with the phone off the desk and i have to use two hands to separate it...

That is a flat desk, and it does not have magnets on it or in it.
Not sure why yours is slipping either...I actually find mine to be gripping too tightly

I have the exact same issue you are having. I got my charger today. I used it at work for about an hour or 2 with no issues then took the charger home and now my phone will not stick to the charger.
After a minute to a minute and a half, the phone is on the night stand no longer charging... (slipped of the charger)
I've had so many issues with my phone which had to be replace 3 times that I am just returning the charger for a refund.
Needless to say that I will never buy LG again nor a "Nexus" branded device.
That's fairly amazing slippage. You should get an Ikea desk with adjustable legs for a special tilt. Is it humid in your location? I wonder what factors cause this because I've tried bumpers and cases and they all stick right on there perfectly.
Had mines on the charger for over an hour with different types of cases (nillkin, official bumper and no case) called phone numerous times and sent messages to see phone. Phone never moved.

It does not have magnets. It uses that sticky silicon stuff on the inner ring to grip to the phone.

All of the sites are contradicting each other. Some say it's magnetized (Android Power), some that it's the tacky stuff (Android Central, Droid Life)

Maybe I should take a video of mine which does not stick at all.... There are absolutely no magnet in this and as nbell13 said, the silicon ring is what is supposed to hold the device just like a suction cup would stick to a piece of glass...
Did you just place the phone on the charger? What if you tried pushing the phone into the charger a bit instead of just placing it on there? The ring is rubber which would deform slightly if you have the phone on there and then apply pressure, and that deformation might act as a suction cup which would give you better grip. I don't have the charger so I can't test this, but for anyone who does can you try this and see if it's any harder to remove (indicating a better grip and less slipping) compared to just placing the phone on the charger?
That's really strange. I got mine today and it holds the phone very well on my nightstand. In fact, I was surprised how well. I also have an Energizer wireless charger that I used on the same nightstand and if I don't use a case, the phone slips right off. I suggest returning it for another one.

I have the LG, Energizer, and now the orb. Best bang for the buck, IMO is the LG charger. Looks cleaner but doesn't angle the phone without being creative like using a tablet stand to hold the LG charger and then the phone will just lay on top of it vertically.
However, having the orb, it does look cool on my desk. The footprint of the orb is really small compared to the LG. For now my LG is at home on the nightstand, the poor Energizer is now stowed away for travel and the Orb is sitting on my desk at work. And for the Energizer, a naked Nexus 4 will def slip off because of it's smooth surface. It literally hydroplanes off the charger. And the Energizer is angled downward as well so having a case or even a back protector will be a must when using the Energizer charger.
Does my orb slip? No. Sux that others have that issue. Not sure why.
Mine is also slipping. I think the magnet is not strong enough on my orb
Why are you placing the phone so high on the charger? Of course it will slide down sitting that high up, you should align the wireless charger with the center of the back on the phone where the wireless charging is. Make a video with your phone sideways and centered on the charger I bet it won't slip.

I don't understand this either. I will say, mine stick, and doesn't slip, but u don't have to put it on the orb that high. Just tested min, and I can put it on the orb, with the bottom of the phone touching the desk, and it continues to charge. I would think this would stop ur sliding. I would still get urs replaced. Along with being sticky, I can feel a slight pull of magnets on mine... Could this be related to phone hardware revision? mines rev 11. I think I read only 11, and 12 are qi certified? Anyone confirm this?
If the phone is charging there will be a slight magnetic attraction, regardless of whether or not there are magnets in the orb or the nexus. When a device is inductively charged there will be a magnetic force between the two coils.

uh that's not true. All Nexus 4s are the same. They're not going to make ones with and without wireless charging.

do any of you experience a strange electricity like sensation when touching the surface of the keyboard dock while it is charging and the transformer is docked? Especially directly to the left of the touchpad and on that middle part just above the keyboard keys. I want to know if I just have a thinly insulated one and should return it or if that is a general thing.
It's very noticable when sliding the finger over the surface lightly.
If you get it while charging plug the charger into the socket upside down, this should fix it.
While it's on USB no idea how to get rid of it but USB's current output isn't strong enough to do anything.

I too feel the strange electricity feel when I move my fingers over the dock case while recharging. When I pull out the charger, the feeling is gone.

You will notice you only feel if when your hand is actually moving across the surface, never just touching it. The dock case is made of plastic, so while it's possible for it to hold a static charge induced through friction it will NOT conduct any current from the power supply or battery. After some use this texture clearly wears in a little and the sensation stops.
Then why goes the feeling away when I unplug the charger and is there again when I replug the charger?
The feel is always there, only it is greater when sliding over ther surfaces or edges.

No, the sensation wil not stop if the surface were to "wear down", it has nothing to do with the texture of the device. The only way it will stop is by flipping the transformer around.
That said you will not get any type of shock from this (unless its realy defective).
I will believe it when someone gets a multimeter on there and confirms there is a potential between the case and ground, but since the case is an insulator I have serious doubts this will ever happen.
You realise that you're suggesting that a current is flowing from the power supply of your transformer, through the plastic case, into your hands and back to ground? That or you're feeling an electric field throgh the plastic, which must be on the order of several kilovolts to produce such a sensation..
Basically the concept that you are feeling an electrical phenomenon is not at all credible.
Ha I noticed this today only since getting to Spain and having to use the Euro plug which you can plug in 'upside down'.
I've never felt it in the UK and all morning I've been thinking "man thats wierd" - I log onto XDA and the 1st post I see relates to it... just turned over my adapater and its gone.

If you don't know anything about what you are claiming to understand, don't post. There ae several long threads on this earlier and the issue is real and has been verified. It is leakage from the wall charger and has been measured and verified using an osciliscope (which has no feeling) . With the plug in one direction there is about 5V AC while with the plug in the other orientation, there is about 60VAC. Sorry for being abrupt, but you claim in wrong.

If you haven't noticed, the bezel of the Transformer and the body of the keyboard dock are metal or metallized.
Please search before you talk trash.
I have this feeling too, when i just got my TF.
I would like to try to plug the charger upside down, but over here, my plug has three legs, hence there is no way i can do that....
Any one who have solve this issue, please share.

That's wierd, see though that's how it shoulda been in the first place, there should have been a ground prong on it so that this wouldn't even be possible to begin with. Doesn't the plug itself though come apart in 2 peices? I know it's supposed to but mine came togehter, but maybe pull it apart and flip the 2 peices? Dunno if that's possible since mine was already together so no clue what it looks like apart.
Is the dock case plastic? Looks and feels like metal (inside keyboard side).
OK, just plugged in the charger: I feel electricity. I turn the euro (I am in Belgium) plug round and the feeling is gone.

The country adapter (plug) snaps in and out very hard. Originally,it came as two pieces,but now comes assembled (maybe because there were issues getting it to assemble correctly). Mine came unassembled. There are only two conductors in the charger assy (hot and neutral) no ground. I am betting the third pin on your plug (gnd) is connected to nothing. When plugged in in onedirection there is leakage to the shield of the usb connector which is connected to the shield of the charge connector which is connected to the metal frame around the edge of the TF.
It's fun watching all this unfold for people who don't use the search tools here. OP, search for this, it's been exhausted in several threads, with measurements, testing, power supply revisions etc etc.

I modified my Galaxy Note to use inductive charging via a palm touchstone / patch.
Just a quick note. Not a whole lot to contribute here, because I largely followed the examples of the Qian Qi. That guy is awesome.
I don't think I voided a warranty, either. Only minimal teardown required (black plastic back, then the speaker section). Never came across a sticker I had to remove....

Notes:
- Buy a good soldering iron. Weller WESD51, set to 610 deg F, with 1/32" long conical tip, with lots of flux and lots of flux remover are the only reason I could do this. I can't stress enough the value of having good temperature control, knowledge of temperature, and so forth. I stumbled around with an "ordinary" soldering iron for a long time, and in hindsite, I can't believe I did so.
- Do not choke on the price. I already had a lot of soldering gear, and I bought $220 more. Spend the money. It's worth it.
- Watch the curious inventor youtube videos on soldering. This guy. Watch everything, several times. http://store.curiousinventor.com/
- You want 30 gauge wire. It's the only thing that just barely can be crammed in. I used the "Kynar" coated type. Buy at least 2 colors.
- as you look at the phone disassembled, with speaker on the bottom left, the +5 pin on the micro usb (MHL) port is the leftmost. I attached a wire to that, and a ground wire to the housing where the port was soldered.
- routed the wires under the speaker, then back, then into a VERY slight indentation into the battery compartment. used a blue "safe open" tool to help shape the wire / crimp ends. Once in the battery compartment, you're golden. Attach the inductive charging coil to the back of the samsung plastic back, add solder to the pads, and attach the wires.
- Attached is a picture with roughly how I routed wires. Red is +5V, Blue is ground. Be sure and double check if my recollection is right where the indentation is into the battery compartment. (that part is by memory).
- dont leave too much slack. it's really hard to get the samsung black pastic panel back on. Mine very slightly bulges.
- be careful where you put the charging sticky patch, because this phone is a little bit bigger than a palm pre. You have to consider if the phone can sit on the charger and "lock in" with the magnets. If you place it too high, it actually can't (in portrait)!
- Qian Qi had a really interesting point: most articles about how Li-ion batteries behave are wrong, and fully discharging the battery drastically reduces the number of cycles you have. So this is actually a very useful mod--whenever you don't use the phone, toss it on the charger.
Thanks for summing it up! Was actually thinking of doing this mod myself. Question: do you have a protective case on your Note? If so - what kind and how badly does it affect the magnetic properties?
No case. Especially because the note is so big, I think it would be unmanageable.
I took the samsung thin plastic back, and placed the Palm PRE (with charging coil still attached) on top of it, on the touchstone -- to figure out proper placement & mark with a pencil. I noticed a buzzing sound, coming from (I think) the induction coil on the palm pre back itself. I suspect if you use a case, this wont work well.
Also, the size/weight/placement of the galaxy note are such that the magnets are just barely strong enough to hold it. One time my phone was near, but off, the charger. I'm not sure if vibration from the phone did that, or my kids
In summary, I'm not sure how well it would work with a case. You might be able to research this on the net; among the 15 or 20 people that have bought a Pre, you might be able to find some info about the effect of a case on inductive charging.

im wanting to try this mod i have my touchstone on the way not thank you amazon but it seems like to me that the pad from the pre wouldnt fit under the cover of our phablet =/ could you post pics of the finished product and i think this is the only instance that i have seen someone attempt this with the note and i want to try it i love my note but would love it even more with inductive charging.

Thank you so much for your post I have my materials on the way but I hadn't seen a detailed guide for the note other than this one and was worried I would have to solder directly to the usb pins which looked scary lol I did have two questions though would your mod work the same way for the at&t note? Specifically the points where you soldered to the phone and can wireless charging be performed through a case?
Hey, OP here. You may want to hold off just a bit. Mine is exhibiting some issues now. As in, it says "charging" but it doesn't do so wirelessly. The phone will stay "charging" but the battery % never goes up. (It was slow before, but would charge fully over a night).
Charging via USB still works.
It may be something simple; I'm not sure. But I need to crack it open and take a peek, and I haven't had time to do that yet because my phone is functional at the moment.
If nothing has conspicuously changed, there may be something about the design that isn't sustainable. Or maybe my solder joint halfway broke, or one of the wires got smashed enough so that it's partially broken...
I'll write back with my findings. Bug me if I don't

No prob I just wanted to see if i could do it and if I can do it with little soldering experience I'm sure most could do it I haven't done this mod to my galaxy note though as there is way less room in its a far more complicated mod than the evo because you have to make room for wires in a device samsung made as thin as possible and the way you have to route the wires I feel like the solder joints would just break

For those who want to try this out but still have warrantee just buy a backcover, a micro usb plug and assemble it according to the directions here.If you need the note just take out the usb plug and the back cover and you're good to go.... Or leave it there.....
For those who don't know what pins to use on the usb plug:
Pin: 1 is 5V+ (red)
Pin: 5 is GND (black)
Works like a charm.......

yes it affects the stylus sometimes it reacts with delay and sometimes it clicks although only hovers over it

I was not a big stylus user; I can't stand the input lag. I didn't notice a difference, but I always considered the input speed unacceptable. Not sure why there would be any difference, anyway.
My big problem that I've never taken the time to address is that after some time, it's as though I can't pull enough current through the wires to charge. One day I need to crack this open & figure out why.

It is slower than normal, but completed in a night. I still have not dismantled my phone to attempt to repair this, but I want to soon
So I read that this device has wireless charging but I can't find an instance of the problem I'm having. Is there something special you have to enable to get it to charge with a qi pad? Neither the nexus orb nor my og lg pad will charge it. I thought the protective plastic might have caused this but even after peeling it back I don't get a charging indicator. Seems my nexus luck follows me wherever. I got one with a nice display and no physical defects seemingly on the first try. Am I doing something wrong here?

Mine charged wirelessly right away, there was nothing I had to manually enable. I tried it on 2 different LG WCP-700 Qi chargers.
Mine had the same issue, and it was the connectors for the coil on the inside. if you feel like opening the case you can try to clean them. that worked for me or just exchange the unit.

Mine was working and now it isn't as well.
I would check the back and see if it feels like you have space. in the case.
Mine seems to be charging fine on my Nexus 4 Orb.

Can you tell us what tools you used to open the device? I'm guessing suction cups, perhaps from iFixIt? Or did you go the spudger route?
As for cleaning the coils, are you referring to the 2 or 4 gold pressure contacts that are present on the back of the casing once the device is opened/separated?

I used a thin guitar pick and started at the bottom of the Screen next to the USB charging port and slowly opened it to the left side of the screen, ( the Side that does not have any buttons) and slowly went up the screen to the top and keep going till I was able to separate the the device from the back unit. But I caution you to be careful as you can easily break the case as IFixit mentions in.
the 4 connector are the ones, that I am referring to, mine device looked like they were not clean. I cleaned them up and after putting together again the wireless charging works.

Yes same problem with mine. Qi Charging did not work and neither did the NFC, although it did on the first day. Opened it up and cleaned off the gunk off the four contacts and Qi and NFC started working again.
Thanks for the advice... Everywhere was sold out near me. After a 55 mile drive to best buy I exchanged it... Way better than waiting on play store agony. This replacement seems better. Screen so far is the same nice quality and everything actually works. Wireless charging is fine. Good to know that this is easy to take apart. My problem though with opening the device is that I tend to get creaks etc afterward. I did search prior BTW... I guess I didn't look hard enough

I wonder about those units where people have not tried Qi Charging or NFC and how rampant a problem this is.
Guys I want to just make you all aware if you have any of those unofficial magnetic charging cables please be very wary of using them.
I noticed over the course of a week the phone would be sat on the desk and and I had a cable charging through the magnetic port but it would stop charging.
I **** you not the cable literally pulled out the charging port directly away from the phone. Now luckily the port has to 'fin' pins (only glued in by the looks of it) and I was able to push them back in and it would charge...however it certainly was not dust and waterproof anymore!!!
Any way I took it back to Carphone warehouse (told them i was using the DK36 official charger..do not tell them you use a third party one) and they sent it away for repair. I have been told today that they are just swapping it out for a new one which should be back with me next week.

has this happened to any of you before? I purchased the one that is available from mobilefun.co.uk but I advise you not too as either the port is weak or the magnet on the cable is too strong (it did not feel that way though!!!).
Lets hope it does not happen again! this is the third Z2 I have had now with the new one I get. FML.
It might be the fault of the phone. I have an aftermarket magnetic cable and it works fine! I have had the cable for about 7 months.

Yes maybe. When the thing came out still attached to the cable (heart in mouth!) I noticed there was very little bonding (glue) on the rear of the charging point.
Still Sony have been very very lax in the quality control department, the amount of snags people are having is unreal. Like I said I'm onto the third now, such a shame because I actually love the device, my favourite phone of late, I have the M8, Z1 and got rid of the S5 (hated) but the Z2 is my fav!
Mine also came out this morning, I dont think they have been glued in they just slide into their slots.
Well there was defo glue or some sort of bonding agent on the rear face of mine...just not much!
I'm no phone designer but surely they should have manufactured the port with a lip to prevent it it from being pulled out!?!?

That's what I would have assumed too, but looking at my Z2's magnetic port, it does look like it's just made to the same size as the hole on the outside!

Yep...it literally slots in and out. Awesome feature for when your glue fails on the rear of the port..NOT.

Just got my replacement from car phone warehouse yesterday. All seems to be in order...no gaps, dodgy drill holes, loose connectors, crap finishing etc...
Time will tell if I have received a good one this time.

I wouldn't say so. Nothing over normal temps.
I would say that the amount of bond used was miniscule like a circle in the middle of the charging point. Not enough in my opinion as the surface area it covered was too small.

I see this appears to be common. How bad is this? I am about to get a Z2 with OEM dock but if this is a common thing perhaps I'll reconsider.

I have been using magnetic charger for two months now. So far it's still intact.
Same here, used magnetic charger seens I bought my Z2 (about 2 month ago) and it works great. Don't have stock desktop charger, bought an adapter cable.

I'm thinking about buying a magnetic charger, but I'm curious as to how people are disconnecting theirs to cause this issue.
My thoughts on it are if you pull it out horizontally, you are obviously putting strain on it by just pulling it off/out. I would have thought the best way to disconnect would be to basically "peel" it off, so that the magnet disconnects at a 90 degree angle. This would then not put any strain on the glue or whatever is used.

I have read a few reviews on some different mag cables and a lot of the aftermarket ones tout how strong the magnetic connection is compared to stock. Maybe the OEM cable was not too strong by design. Also wondering what kind of glue it is holding the port in. I just got my Z2 and I like it a lot so far. The mag cable looks like a great convenience which I'll be buying as soon as I decide I'm definitely keeping the phone (I'm commitment-challenged). Got my phone from B&H Photo and it says they are an authorized Sony dealer, but they are on the other side of the US so I really don't wanna have to ship my phone across country and then wait if I have an issue.
Right, well I have the Sony magnetic charger, I sent it back to sony as I thought it was to blame, it was working then stopped.
However when it was returned to me, I went to use it, the charge started and then stopped, so I thought it was the magnetic dock again, took the phone off the magnetic dock and these was a hole where the docking pins should be . Turns out they were on the magnetic dock! come out completely, so put the charger point bar back in the phone, reconnected and yes it charged but again, when I came to undock, phones charger area left on the dock. So it happens with the OEM dock as well.
Looks like a fight with Vodafone to get the phone repaired.

I have the official Sony Dock, so I can rule out it being 'just' due to the after-market docks. I had noticed before I even started using the magnetic dock that the connector was a bit mobile/loose. So much so that, whilst on holiday and shooting around water, I held my thumb over the connector. When, a couple of weeks later, I started to charge through the port, I noticed that it was making connect/disconnect noises as I was putting it onto the dock. I also noticed that it charged more slowly than via the USB port. Eventually (about a week after having read of the problem on these forums), the connector did stay on the charger, when the phone was removed. I have pushed it back in, but it just drops down, when on the charger, disconnecting from the phone. I am quite sure that it is no longer watertight, as there is a thin layer of quite 'spongy' adhesive tape on the back of the separated connector that is no longer adhesive and you can see quite well into the phone, through the connector holes. I believe that it is repairable (and the watertightness restorable) at little cost, given a competent person, who could strip the adhesive and replace it with something similar, but stronger AND put some strong adhesive around the outside of it, before pushing it back in. It's a shame that something so small is affecting so many people's opinion of Sony and marring an, otherwise, very good phone.
I will be attempting to return mine to the UK operator 'Three', this weekend and, if they are unwilling or unable to help, I will be taking to Twitter and other Social Media sites, to raise the profile to a wider audience... Sony are already doing relatively poorly in the mobile phone marketplace (for a company of their size) and they can sweep this under the carpet and try to ignore it, losing a small number of their 'fans', or they can make a big PR exercise. Any decent company would see this as a marketing opportunity - make direct contact with your customers and win their trust, by fixing a problem. It's their choice - act big or act small...
Anyone try these? I ordered a couple along with a couple different tops, they'll be arriving in a couple days but I wanted to see if anyone else uses them. With such a big phone I wanted to get something that would give me some more grip (I'm a clumsy person by nature), but would also allow me to charge wirelessly without too much hassle. Hoping that the base doesn't stick out too terribly far from the case when the top is off...
They work well, but with the Ringke Air clear case wireless charging was terrible. (It would start and stop charging constantly). If you go naked wireless charging should be fine but there might be trouble with a case on.

Even when taking the top off? That's pretty disappointing as they claim to be better suited for wireless charging with the new generation of swappable ones. They arrive today, hopefully I'll have a better experience.
Yeah that was even when taking the top off, and honestly taking the top off is more hassle than just plugging in the charging cable.

For me it's less about the hassle and more about the durability of the charging port. I've had too many phones wear out the charger port, so I try to stick with wireless charging when I can and only use the charger port when I need a top-off from a portable battery pack.
Update after an hour of playing with them:
I can get wireless charging to work by placing the bottom one low on the phone and the top one high enough that the ridge on the base doesn't come into contact with my charging stand. This also allows me to only have to take one of them off to charge wirelessly, with the top one popped out and "hooked" over the top of the base. This works for both my Samsung 2018 fast charge stand I use at home and my cheap stand I use on my desk. Decided to use two for the sake of using them as a horizontal stand (and the top one can be used to prop it up a little vertically as well).
Comfort-wise, I find it to be a lot better than relying solely on my pinky. I do find that I am resting my pinky along the bottom of the phone when I'm swyping to type, but the popsocket takes most of the weight off so I can just use my pinky to brace instead of bearing the whole weight of the phone. Overall I'm pleased!
I reused the pop from my S10+. I feel that it allows me to take pics one handed without worrying about dropping the phone. Like you said, it's a big device and mistakes happen.

Not trying to promote but the company i work for sell pop sockets and make custom designs etc I thought they were just a fad to begin with but a guy in work was using one and telling me how great it was and i gave in and tried one. They are so handy. They pretty much just aid in using ur phone in one hand really and can act as a prop / stand also. The only negative of using one that i can think of would be wireless charging
