Dang, in Houston I'm lucky to break 300kB.
I thought Houston had a good coverage area? Does it not?
I still think they need to update the Radio. It has something to do with it I think. Because the CLEAR adapter cards can get higher speeds in the same area. I am not complaining mind you. Anything consistently over 2MB is very nice.

I have never gotten over 400kB, and that was first day of launch early morning...it seems the network went to crap after the EVO launch. The main issue for me is it won't get reception in my downtown office building (or any comercial building really) due to the high frequencies wimax uses.
Average speeds with typical signal is about 220kB for me.
What is your 3G speeds? Since it uses a different frequency you might get better speeds through 3G.
Have you downloaded the speedtest.net app into your droid?

yes I have the speedtest app. 3g Speeds range from mid 50s to high 120skB down with an average of 120kB up. Note kB = kilobyte not bit

were gonna have to wait till they upgrade everything

Well you are inside as well so that doesn't help. The needed to place the WiMax at about 600Mhz range
I got a my first 4G signal in LA... I was near (within a mile) a Best Buy which is where I am assuming it was. I got 5Mb up and 1Mb down.... which is awesome... 3G gets me 800kb up and 200kb down... so exactly 1/5. I also noticed the ping was much better.... 3G ping was 300 and 4G was 100.
My 3G here in ATL, GA gets me up in the range of 1.2Mbps to 2Mbps which is really good.

I dont think you understand the difference between kb and kB. My results are in the 2-3mbit range. Pretty impressive on the 10-11megabit...that's the theoretical max.

Yeah I think people get confused with kb, Kb, Mbps and MB/sec, etc.
For some reason on the CLEAR/WiMax Air Cards they can reach the limit as it does for me when I was testing them. But in the same spot my 4G can't get over 3.5Mbps.

I am not sure but I think for the moment I think they are. I have heard reports that the people on the Sprint HOTSPOT are getting better speeds. They are using different servers. So it would make sense to make sure they get the better speeds. The idea of downloading large files to your phone is not really that grand. Having a low latency network with consistent 1.5Mbps speeds would make for a good Mobile OS experience. Even video chat works well at that speed.

WOW! Which best buy?? I've been driving all over the San Fernando valley no 4g anywhere that I could find.
on the upside I got 1.5m down and 600k up on 3g at work so no complaining from me.
if my memory serves me right 10Mbits = 1.25 MBytes, you can calculate from there.

this is freaking rediculous, its not my phone as my wifes epic does the same thing. no matter what, not over 150kbps. downloads can be 600K 1.1 meg, and never over 150kbps when testing with speedtest on uploads.
This is simple: upload is not as fast as download
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I've seen around 200kbps upload at highest on my epic.
Just did speedtest.net and it got 973kbps download and 146kbps upload.
3G performance has been terrible on the Epic. I have Epic, Evo and TP2 right next to each other. After three consecutive tests, the Epic's best score was 376 / 146, Evo = 1152 / 308, TP2 = 886 / 228. The Evo and TP2 scores were fairly consistant, the Epic was as low as 80 / 122 (yes 80kilobits). That said, while watching the tests run, it does seem as if there could be a cap on the Epic upload speed. Even if it bounced over 150, it would immediately crop back down.
thats what i'm saying, on the speedtest, I see my upload start at like 300-400 for a sec and then drops down. sprint says upload should be similar to download speed. clearly maybe its a sprint network issue? verizon doesn't have this issue.

On speedtest.net I just got 600 down and 143 up. Like others said, it would go a little higher than 150 on the up speed, but then bounce back down under 150.
lame, the speedtest app doesn't even have california as a testing spot.
Speedtest.net has a Los Angeles Server for both 3g and 4g. Also Sprint has 2 towers that should be going up soon in the los angeles area that will make speeds more consistant. I have been doing side-by-side tests with my old iphone 3gS and my new epic, and what i found was that in servers closer to the west coast sprint had far better up/down speeds however for servers farther east att had slightly better speeds also ATT had horrible ping.... sprint never had higher ping to any server than att . However this all goes out the window because in Downtown LA. im under a 4G umbrella and get 5.1 meg download and a 1.2 upload..... this is fater than what i can get at home using wifi.... suck that ATT!
yeah i'm getting around 600 down and about 150 up
I live in arkansas which isn't worth a poop for wireless networks compared to the bigger cities, but I get 1.61mbps down and .31mbps up
They are testing 4G in my area, so I have it here in Colorado. I get 3000 down and 1500 up on that.
On 3G I too am getting around 1000 down and around 175 up.
but it's more than enough for me.
sprint just called me back. had me run mobilespeedtest.com which of course doesn't have upload speeds. Guy was very nice so I'm gonna give him a break. Anyway, he confirmed that for my area, the upload speeds should be 350-500 and said the engineers will look at it and hopefully I'll hear back within 72hours.
i'm interested in seeing if this gets resolved.. Upstream bandwidth is not important to some, but for people like me it can make a huge difference.

i don't care if its not huge upload, but this is rediculous for the money we are paying.
my friends droid 2 did the same download side by side and the upload was like 50kbps less, while mine is like 350kbps less.
its been rumored that there was a 200kb "cap" on upload, download is just fine for myself but upload does have a part when i upload pics to fb or the like

well today I got like 172 on upload when doing 1100 download. so I'd say 200kbps is probably it under perfect conditions.
my friends droid2 is looking very good at the moment. I don't really need the upload speed, but its just how many hardware deficiencies can you deal with? I'm very leary to believe that all the problems are software.
Just did a test with 3 G and 4 G here in Haverhill MA..
3G was 1.6Mbps DL and 150 kbps up
4G was 6.1 Mbps DL and 1.63 Mbps up
I do feel like something is capping upload on the Epic. I didnt have this issue on my EVO. Here are my 3G speeds (I'm inside a building though):

Just wanted to reply that 3G upload data is definitely capped. 150kbits upload max. 4G does just fine. But my friend has an Evo 4G, we tested right next to each other.
our downloads were the same, his upload was 800 while mine was 150.
Yeah I know the .net site has LA servers but the app inside the android market for speedtest does not have anything on the west coast for me to test my speeds.

I've only seen 2 people out of the hundreds who already have their G2 get above 7Mb download speeds. Heck, most people don't even get above 4Mb download! I've seen so many people with 0.5Mb download speeds even when their in an HSPA+ supported area like NYC or Los Angeles.
I haven't gotten my G2 yet so I can't test it, but what I've seen so far has been pathetic. I've seen a youtube video where a G1 beats a G2 in a Speedtest and another where the Evo gets above 5Mb download but the G2 gets 0.5Mb download while in an HSPA+ area. Even the Droid 2 on 3G got higher than the G2.
This is T-Mobiles main selling point but only like 2% of people are actually getting these high speeds. WTF GIVES?
If you are getting these high speeds, are they consistent? Or do you always fluctuate from high-low speeds?
I'm getting a little skeptical now. I'm not worried about the internal memory but the loose hinge and slow download speeds would kill me. Again, this is T-Mobiles main selling point for the G2 but no one is getting these speeds. I can't imagine what people will say when more blog sites/reviews get there hands on this phone. T-Mobile would look silly claiming 4G speeds while my friends Evo gets 10Mb download on 4G.

I'm hoping Oct 5th or 6th the 7Mb is a thing of reality in all supported areas.
I get about 400 kbps down and 300 kbps up... SLOW.

It's weird how 1 or 2 people get high speeds and everyone else gets like 0.5Mb download even in HSPA+ areas.

At work.. 2 bars of "H" I did the speedtest app and got 8.4mbit down and 1.2up.
F*cking happy G2 owner here.
I'm getting 8.4mps or in real world since no one uses friggin bits in the US, 1.1~1.2 megabytes per second download and 122k upload, ppfft.
Download speeds are crazy though.

It has nothing to do with that.
Just becausr your city HAS HSPA+ doesnt mean its availible at all 3G towers yet. That and if you didnt peak at 6mbps regularly on a fast 7.2 device you would NOT see an increase with the G2.

Man that sucks. These are the average speeds i get at home.
~300kb/s on 3G (Half bars of signal)
~4.3Mb/s on 4G (This is with only 2 bars on 4G)
So i cant complain...
Flippin sad... That's all I can say... I am averaging 2.5Mbps indoors (we have crappy indoor coverage) and well...
Yes, don't use speedtest.net as the servers are so inaccurate it's not even funny! Try going straight from your browser to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and see what you get. The results seem to be much more consistent.
You do realize your bars are for mobile reception... not 3g service right...sigh, if only everyone knew...

You do realize that is not as good of a test as speedtest as your test takes into account the rendering performance of the mobile cpu. The only way to not factor in cpu performance is to tether off of a pc. Anyway the speedtest app does not cache so your point is a bit invalid. Plus how are you getting 440ms on 4g that seems really off. I've had speeds between 2.5 down up to the 6 I show there on 4G throughout Orange County.
Full Disclosure I am running CM7 nightly with wimax.

Perhaps, but I do in fact get pages loading faster on 4G than on 3G. Also, with ANY kind of streaming there's a huge difference on 4G. Youtube will typically give me an error 3-4 times or more on 3G. 4G loads it up right away. And I've tried it in several spots. This is just my personal experience though, so YMMV.
i was watching a video on pocketnow.com about HSPA+ speeds increased in detroid and users were geting like 4+ download (still crappy upload) so i tried it and i just got 4.5mbs download and .33 upload in buffalo NY maybe AT&T is doing something afterall because before today i have been getting speeds of like 3.2 and 2.5ish download and same crappy upload let me know what speeds your getting. id put up screen shots but have no idea how

I see your point as well but I don't think that the point applies to reality that often
i got these 4.5-5.5 download speeds (same cappy upload though) in Texas at home.
After a week the speeds are back to crap...

Under mobile network type in settings>about phone will it show HSDPA+ if you are getting the "4g connection" or will it still just show HSDPA? I have never seen my phone go past 3 mb on download and have been in Dallas and Oklahoma...

You have to be rooted, and connected to a pc.
Yep, when I'm home in the Tampa area, I receive much higher speeds (download speeds, that is). Generally in the 4 Mbps area.

You don't have to be rooted. You just need the drivers installed along with the SDK and just open the "tools" folder in the SDK and run the ddms.bat file. Once running, select your phone, then on your phone navigate to want you want a screenshot of, click refresh and then press save.

I hate to be the one to say this cause I def agree that 5Mbps is better the 3Mbps but even 5Mbps is not HSPA+ if we all remember HSPA theoretical max is 14.4 with HSPA+ theoretical max at 42Mbps up and 84Mbps down. now I realize that we will never see 84Mbps but 8.4 is def possible. So all I say to you guys is don't let at&t off the hook with 5Mbps

i was watching a video on pocketnow.com about HSPA+ speeds increased in detroid and users were geting like 4+ download (still crappy upload) so i tried it and i just got 4.5mbs download and .33 upload in buffalo NY maybe AT&T is doing something afterall because before today i have been getting speeds of like 3.2 and 2.5ish download and same crappy upload let me know what speeds your getting. id put up screen shots but have no idea how

Yeah unfortunately the speeds you're getting are 3G nothing more nothing special. I got the exact same speeds on my HTC tilt 2 and on my LG Quantum. Hopefully (fingers crossed) they do nothing but talk about the end of march as an activation date for their 4G aka HSPA+ (not true 4G) or at least by june. But with ATT one can only hope. I do have to say perhaps they have fixed something in NY for you cause I've heard that signal and speed up there is horrible

Pulled these scores by tethering my laptop to the phone:

Also pulled these through the phone itself:
Speedtest.net app: 1.5 down .32 up
speakeasy through opera browser: 3.07 down .28 up
speakeasy through webtop: 5.07 down .35 up
Why do you think there is such fluctuation and which is probably most accurate?
I'm in the east bay, walnut creek concord area and I'm getting 3.5-4.1 down and 0.30-0.37 up. I'm not tethering or anything.

What are you using to test speeds?
Sounds like capped speeds. I'm not sure if it works on the atrix but on the inspire you can edit the build prop to get better speeds.

well that doesn't really make sense. It just seems that for some reason speskeasy is handing out way better speeds

I'm using the speedtest.net speed test app.
The upload speeds are capped as of now. They will be uncapped once the hsupa+ is enabled some time in april. People have been trying to get it enabled sooner but there is nothing to flash the radio with that works.

VERY curious as to why I'm getting 4+ down on speakeasy and 1.5 on speedtest.net. Running again to verifiy:
*Ran both directly from the phone 2x*
speakeasy downloads: 3.09 - 3.21
speetest.net downloads: 0.54 - 0.70
Hmm....
I did the same thing again back to back
Speak easy shows 4.94 down and 0.34 up
speed test app shows 4.23 down and 0.32 up

Not only am I disappointed, I'm confused at the inconsistency.
if its any help when I had my Iphone and the speed test app it had a little graph that shows your speeds as the test is running. I would always see my Iphone spike right from the start at a high speed then fall and work its way back up to a lower speed then the first spike. Maybe the same thing is happening here but the test is so fast on speak easy it doesn't give the phone a chance to drop off that first spike. Where with speed test the test it self is a lot longer so I think it would better reflect an accurate rating.

I was almost certain HSPA+ wasn't in my area yet, so it makes more sense that the 1.5 im getting is accurate. but but now I don't know. it bothers me that the other poster is able to get the same speeds on both tests.

jealous.
Hsupa+ is not enabled on our phones yet so once that firmware update goes out those in the "4g" areas should see a speed increase. I know their map shows me as being in a 4g area and I am wondering what kind of speed increase I will be seeing.
is sacramento hspa+ already? I ask csr they dont know a damn thing and my phone is slow as hell. I want my iphone 4 back!!!
One thing to note is that the Speedtest app uses your location data to pick the closest server. Sometimes that location data is off or inaccurate and it picks some test server on the other side of the country.
Sometimes the speedtest.net app shows my phone at less than .50 down. Then wait a few minutes and then try some more it goes up. The highest I have seen is about 3.0 down. I am "supposed" to be in a live 4g area, but under "about phone/status" it always shows HSDPA.
