this is freaking rediculous, its not my phone as my wifes epic does the same thing. no matter what, not over 150kbps. downloads can be 600K 1.1 meg, and never over 150kbps when testing with speedtest on uploads.
This is simple: upload is not as fast as download
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I've seen around 200kbps upload at highest on my epic.
Just did speedtest.net and it got 973kbps download and 146kbps upload.
3G performance has been terrible on the Epic. I have Epic, Evo and TP2 right next to each other. After three consecutive tests, the Epic's best score was 376 / 146, Evo = 1152 / 308, TP2 = 886 / 228. The Evo and TP2 scores were fairly consistant, the Epic was as low as 80 / 122 (yes 80kilobits). That said, while watching the tests run, it does seem as if there could be a cap on the Epic upload speed. Even if it bounced over 150, it would immediately crop back down.
thats what i'm saying, on the speedtest, I see my upload start at like 300-400 for a sec and then drops down. sprint says upload should be similar to download speed. clearly maybe its a sprint network issue? verizon doesn't have this issue.

On speedtest.net I just got 600 down and 143 up. Like others said, it would go a little higher than 150 on the up speed, but then bounce back down under 150.
lame, the speedtest app doesn't even have california as a testing spot.
Speedtest.net has a Los Angeles Server for both 3g and 4g. Also Sprint has 2 towers that should be going up soon in the los angeles area that will make speeds more consistant. I have been doing side-by-side tests with my old iphone 3gS and my new epic, and what i found was that in servers closer to the west coast sprint had far better up/down speeds however for servers farther east att had slightly better speeds also ATT had horrible ping.... sprint never had higher ping to any server than att . However this all goes out the window because in Downtown LA. im under a 4G umbrella and get 5.1 meg download and a 1.2 upload..... this is fater than what i can get at home using wifi.... suck that ATT!
yeah i'm getting around 600 down and about 150 up
I live in arkansas which isn't worth a poop for wireless networks compared to the bigger cities, but I get 1.61mbps down and .31mbps up
They are testing 4G in my area, so I have it here in Colorado. I get 3000 down and 1500 up on that.
On 3G I too am getting around 1000 down and around 175 up.
but it's more than enough for me.
sprint just called me back. had me run mobilespeedtest.com which of course doesn't have upload speeds. Guy was very nice so I'm gonna give him a break. Anyway, he confirmed that for my area, the upload speeds should be 350-500 and said the engineers will look at it and hopefully I'll hear back within 72hours.
i'm interested in seeing if this gets resolved.. Upstream bandwidth is not important to some, but for people like me it can make a huge difference.

i don't care if its not huge upload, but this is rediculous for the money we are paying.
my friends droid 2 did the same download side by side and the upload was like 50kbps less, while mine is like 350kbps less.
its been rumored that there was a 200kb "cap" on upload, download is just fine for myself but upload does have a part when i upload pics to fb or the like

well today I got like 172 on upload when doing 1100 download. so I'd say 200kbps is probably it under perfect conditions.
my friends droid2 is looking very good at the moment. I don't really need the upload speed, but its just how many hardware deficiencies can you deal with? I'm very leary to believe that all the problems are software.
Just did a test with 3 G and 4 G here in Haverhill MA..
3G was 1.6Mbps DL and 150 kbps up
4G was 6.1 Mbps DL and 1.63 Mbps up
I do feel like something is capping upload on the Epic. I didnt have this issue on my EVO. Here are my 3G speeds (I'm inside a building though):

Just wanted to reply that 3G upload data is definitely capped. 150kbits upload max. 4G does just fine. But my friend has an Evo 4G, we tested right next to each other.
our downloads were the same, his upload was 800 while mine was 150.
Yeah I know the .net site has LA servers but the app inside the android market for speedtest does not have anything on the west coast for me to test my speeds.

Dang, in Houston I'm lucky to break 300kB.
I thought Houston had a good coverage area? Does it not?
I still think they need to update the Radio. It has something to do with it I think. Because the CLEAR adapter cards can get higher speeds in the same area. I am not complaining mind you. Anything consistently over 2MB is very nice.

I have never gotten over 400kB, and that was first day of launch early morning...it seems the network went to crap after the EVO launch. The main issue for me is it won't get reception in my downtown office building (or any comercial building really) due to the high frequencies wimax uses.
Average speeds with typical signal is about 220kB for me.
What is your 3G speeds? Since it uses a different frequency you might get better speeds through 3G.
Have you downloaded the speedtest.net app into your droid?

Well you are inside as well so that doesn't help. The needed to place the WiMax at about 600Mhz range
I got a my first 4G signal in LA... I was near (within a mile) a Best Buy which is where I am assuming it was. I got 5Mb up and 1Mb down.... which is awesome... 3G gets me 800kb up and 200kb down... so exactly 1/5. I also noticed the ping was much better.... 3G ping was 300 and 4G was 100.
My 3G here in ATL, GA gets me up in the range of 1.2Mbps to 2Mbps which is really good.

Yeah I think people get confused with kb, Kb, Mbps and MB/sec, etc.
For some reason on the CLEAR/WiMax Air Cards they can reach the limit as it does for me when I was testing them. But in the same spot my 4G can't get over 3.5Mbps.

I am not sure but I think for the moment I think they are. I have heard reports that the people on the Sprint HOTSPOT are getting better speeds. They are using different servers. So it would make sense to make sure they get the better speeds. The idea of downloading large files to your phone is not really that grand. Having a low latency network with consistent 1.5Mbps speeds would make for a good Mobile OS experience. Even video chat works well at that speed.

WOW! Which best buy?? I've been driving all over the San Fernando valley no 4g anywhere that I could find.
on the upside I got 1.5m down and 600k up on 3g at work so no complaining from me.
if my memory serves me right 10Mbits = 1.25 MBytes, you can calculate from there.

What do you get in your office?
What should I be expecting to see for download speeds on my Evo with Sprint. I just ran a speedtest app from the market and I'm getting higher upload speeds that download speeds.
I seem to average around 450 or so kbps. I topped out at 700 kbps. My signal seems to be full bars.
Upload speeds seem to be equal to or higher than my download speeds.
Sent from my Evo using XDA App
I'm getting close to the same siting at my house with 4 bars. 565/418

i've seen upwards of 6mbps
I got between 256kbps to 500kbps download speed 3G . Some time less than 256kbps. It suck, I think depend the area and how far is the towers
Usually get around 1Mbps, on average, around the house. Give or take a little fluctuation.
3G, usually don't have full bars but I'm not usually paying much mind to them either. So not sure.
Just ran it from my office. I have 5 out of 6 "bars" on 3G for what it's worth. This is in Baltimore and I am pinging the Philadelphia server.
Ping: 94 ms
Download: 919 kbps
Upload: 617 kbps
Wimax doesn't do as good a job with the whole "bars" thing but they're always an estimate at best anyway. It's showing 2 out of 3 at the moment.
Ping: 135 ms
Download: 3640 kbps
Upload: 992 kbps
Typically my downloads are around 600-1000kbps on EVDO and 3000-5000 on Wimax. Uploads vary more but Wimax usually tops out around 1000-1100kbps.
Wimax in Chicago
This is what i got. The fastest I've gotten was about 8mbps down (not shown here).
With -40 dbs (full signal) I've gotten 2310 kbps down and 721kbps up...
Forgot to mention I was on 3g. Dunno how to add the pic from my phone...
3G speeds increased with -B modification
Mine tops 1.2mps

Can we focus on 3g speeds?
I'm pretty sure I'm picking up an Evo tomorrow and these posts have been very interesting to me. I will be in 3g territory 99.8% of the time I have this phone. My sprint rep guy told me that the towers in my town are sprint towers (no idea if that really means anything,) so I'm hoping for excellent 3g data coverage here.
If anyone have any 3g reports for Beaver Dam, Wisconsin (which i'm sure you dont) feel free to post!
And if any of this doesn't make any sense, I blame it on the Ambien Walrus that is distracting me here. See below for details.
Edit: Apparently I cannot post my fabulous picture. Anyways: 3G>Madison Area>How Good???
With 4G, 1 bar, 4-5 Mbps is the usual around here. I hate the **** quality of building penetration. I don't know if that will forever be a given, but GOT DAYUM, if I could just post my phone up by the window and rock the hotspot that'd be cool ... or if when I was laying on the couch (head / phone close to window) it'd somehow pick it up. Not a huge deal.
3G though, I should start taking more speedtests (which are known to be inaccurate anyways - but I try a few to get a "somewhat" average reading. or so I hope) just to see. I see speeds that FAR outweigh what I pull in. I don't get it. 3G is solid, never experience any shortages but some places just have MAX signal?
Is everyone just using the Speedtest app that comes with the phone to determine their speeds? I had read that it gave incorrect results. Mine are all over the place, but even if I use DSlReports or SpeakEasy, the results vary significantly.
This is with my laptop wirelessly connected to my phone.

I get around 500down,250 up here on 3g. In strong Wimax areas I get around 6M down (dont recall upload speed). They seem to be getting a new tower up around me now. As these things go,they are spotty at first, then they get them fully online. When I can get a signal in my house (by putting the phone in the back rooms window) I can get around 2M down and 400K up. Im actually typing this while tethered (I rooted today and installed wifi tether.) Its working pretty good.
So what are some of the real world speeds you guys get on 4g connection? I am using the speedtest.net app, I got the phone last Friday so I was playing with it around my apartment. The speeds I was getting were average at best; 2510 kbps down and 327 kbps up were about my averages.
However I just ran some speed tests at my work today and holy crap. I wish I could take a screenshot of my results, but I am not rooted. My average speeds here are 6390 kbps down and 1088 kbps up. And the highest result I Have gotten is 8740 down and 1131 up. That is faster than my home internet download by a shade and almost double the upload speeds.
I am in Houston getting those speeds right off the beltway.
As a side note Clear, the people who power sprint's 4g service, offers internet direct from them. I wonder if that means the 4g infrastructure is better here because Clear wants better internet for their home service.
I live near a 4G area in downtown Los Angeles. I was there this weekend and these are my speedtest.net results.
The bottom is 4G from this past sunday, the top is 3G from this morning.

Yep I am just curious what typical speeds are. Before I bought this phone I figured 4g would be about 2-3 mbps but boy was I wrong.
Its also kinda funny because my 3g speed are so bad.
Inside a building at King of Prussia, PA:
4700 down, 1200 up
My EVO gets 5200 down, 1300 up...
In downtown LA inside my building i get about 5.4 mb down and 1.2 up. 3g is about .5 - .7 down and about .15 - .3up these are constants highest ive seen were about 8 mb-ish too bad it ****s on battery life but then again who cares theese days people have chargers everywhere... Hell the bum on the streets has a USB connection i can charge with...

true, I just bought 2 extra micro usb cords to leave around and I already have the included and car charger. Now I have to find something to do with my old mini usb cords. 1 for external hard drive 1 for ps3 controller....10 for modern art project?
I am still kinda in shock that i just downloaded a 500 MB file in under 30 min. Good thing I was downloading it in a way that supported resume because the connection dropped twice during.
I'm also in Houston. Here at my apt(downstairs) I get no 4g what so ever, 3g is laughable. BUT I was at my cousins house northeast houston, 4g connection hitting 7 megs down and around 1 meg upload. I haved that map app that let's you see where 4g is at and my apt is dead smack in it. But I'm guessing all the trees and me being downstairs is the culprit.

Great to see those speeds in Houston, where off the Beltway? My office is west of 45 near TC Jester and ever since about Thursday when I turn on 4G it just says "Unknown" and doesn't actually connect to 4G. Kinda frustrating.
The best speed over 4G I have gotten was 2800 down and 1100 up, that was while driving 75 mph though.
Download "map viewer" from the market. Then set it up for sprint 4g. It will show you exact locations where 4g is up for you. I'm off 290 and west rd(nw houston) its all over. But as I said no 4g from my apt building....trees and buildings will kill your connection.

Went to vegas from the 1st through the 6th and was 3.6mbps down and 2.6 up while in my room at the sahara... got spoiled with it, still waiting in Orange County for some 4g... tic toc tic toc Sprint!
My results on break outside in the parking lot at work today (Des Plaines, IL right near O'Hare) I got 9549 down 1067 (capped) up. I've seen it at 8 and sometimes as low as 6.5 with full signal, so it varies quite a bit. Surely impressive though, and I'm a pessimist!
New best for inside my office at work. I should really try this outside:

4G isn't officially available here in Colorado yet... but I started seeing some 4G signal regardless last night... usually 1 and occasionally 2 bars at my house in Louisville (located between Denver and Boulder - but really just outside Boulder). No signal yet at our office in Boulder.
I was seeing around 2 Mbps on 3G with my Evo before I returned it - which I think is pretty fantastic for speed.. The Epic doesn't seem to do as well on 3G as the Evo did... I am usually seeing around 800 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps on 3G with the Epic.
I am seeing between 2 to 3.5 Mbps down and about 1 Mbps back on 4G though. Not too shabby - about 50% increase in performance. Now if only wireless tether worked as well on the epic as it did on the Evo, I would be one happy camper. Screen shot attached.
I've only seen 2 people out of the hundreds who already have their G2 get above 7Mb download speeds. Heck, most people don't even get above 4Mb download! I've seen so many people with 0.5Mb download speeds even when their in an HSPA+ supported area like NYC or Los Angeles.
I haven't gotten my G2 yet so I can't test it, but what I've seen so far has been pathetic. I've seen a youtube video where a G1 beats a G2 in a Speedtest and another where the Evo gets above 5Mb download but the G2 gets 0.5Mb download while in an HSPA+ area. Even the Droid 2 on 3G got higher than the G2.
This is T-Mobiles main selling point but only like 2% of people are actually getting these high speeds. WTF GIVES?
If you are getting these high speeds, are they consistent? Or do you always fluctuate from high-low speeds?
I'm getting a little skeptical now. I'm not worried about the internal memory but the loose hinge and slow download speeds would kill me. Again, this is T-Mobiles main selling point for the G2 but no one is getting these speeds. I can't imagine what people will say when more blog sites/reviews get there hands on this phone. T-Mobile would look silly claiming 4G speeds while my friends Evo gets 10Mb download on 4G.

It's weird how 1 or 2 people get high speeds and everyone else gets like 0.5Mb download even in HSPA+ areas.
I tested it a couple times earlier today and they were both 6. something down...Up usually tends to be around .5 for me...I'm pretty happy with it overall

I live in Philadelphia and I only get about 1.5 to 2.0 mb speeds. mobile network type says HSDPA
best i got was 7934 kbps down 1334 kbps up philly suburbs
there are some serious problems going around
At work.. 2 bars of "H" I did the speedtest app and got 8.4mbit down and 1.2up.
F*cking happy G2 owner here.
I'm getting 8.4mps or in real world since no one uses friggin bits in the US, 1.1~1.2 megabytes per second download and 122k upload, ppfft.
Download speeds are crazy though.
Guys, this is certainly not a fault on HTCs side. Blame your providers for not giving you the speeds that you want
I get about 7mbps in upstate NY Rockland county

The H is a lie.
Thats how Tmobile works I had enough of them in chicago area so I switch. Its depend on the tower load or something. Don't expect great speed all the time
I'm only getting 3.5 down and 2.0 up.... some bs

Oops! Didn't mean to post that with no words! I wanted to say that we've got a beautiful clear sky in NYC finally (see pic), but I'm still getting painfully slow speeds - like 1600kbps down - so it wasn't just the weather - something's clearly wrong!

It has nothing to do with that.
Just becausr your city HAS HSPA+ doesnt mean its availible at all 3G towers yet. That and if you didnt peak at 6mbps regularly on a fast 7.2 device you would NOT see an increase with the G2.
i dont kno about urs but my Vibrant rocks
Wanting to get some feedback on everyones data speeds I'm using speednet app from market. I get an average of 300kbs down and 220kbs up. Vzw says 600-800 avg for a 3g network so they want to replace my phone?? Friends at work are getting same so I don't agree with phone exchange. Please share I would like to see how other areas fare. I'm in down state Il for reference.
Edit- currently running stock froyo update after com rom had same issue so went back to stock for sake of troubleshooting..

I've got a cell tower right next to my place of work (4 bars) and consistently get between 1400-1500kbps down and 500-700kbps up.

Alright well it seems that my 3g is slower than most. Tested more phones outside of work and in my area seems it is network related since different phones are doing same speeds some rooted others not. at home speed is better and close to 5-6kbs? Still slow considering my wifi at home nets me an average 7mbps sometimes later at night I can see 9 strong mbps. I'm guessing a phone swap is the only support they know how to give?

I have gotten 2.2 mbps down on the EC01 modem before. Had the best results with that, although I would like to run more tests on ED01.

Try taking off the factory battery cover and see if your signal improves. My signal was like yours until I removed the stock cover. I pull 18mb down 4mb up on my wifi now, where before 7mb was the best it could do on a 25mb broadband connection right next to my router lol. I bought a new case and the signal is great...tried umpteen times now switching back and forth from the factory cover...the signal drops from -78db to -100db everytime. One guy said it didnt work on his fascinate, but maybe certain versions of the phone have the antenna mounted differently,, not really sure. my SF is v.11 running rooted stock 2.2.1 froyo.
EC01 radio, Evil Fascinate, and 1.3 OTB kernel would give me an average of 1.2-2.4 MBPS. The only time I get anything lower is at my girlfriends house(average around .7-.8 down). Anywhere else in Pittsburgh is 1.2 MBPS or better.
Seem to average 1900 kbps down 700 up. This is from various times of day in my apartment. And I had similar results with EC01 (sc 2.9.2). Denver, CO area.
Beautifully working (so far) CommRom 1.3/ED01
Nice, I usually get 3-4 average during the day, but this was at 2:34, and I love the speed. <3 (Running KB5 modem for Vibrant)

Here's my blazing fast 3G speeds from midtown NYC. Tested twice from an nyc server and one in NJ. I used kB/s for one and Mbps so people can compare, point, and laugh. These are my best speeds from about 5 attempts. this is why I usually have WiFi turned on when it's available.. I can hear the 56K Dial-Up modem sounds when I connect to web pages.

How do you guys handle such slow speeds on 3G? I get 3-5 mbps on T-Mobile with around 60-80 ping and it's a little slow haha. But Verizon has much more 3G coverage....
