You have to be rooted, and connected to a pc.
Yep, when I'm home in the Tampa area, I receive much higher speeds (download speeds, that is). Generally in the 4 Mbps area.

You don't have to be rooted. You just need the drivers installed along with the SDK and just open the "tools" folder in the SDK and run the ddms.bat file. Once running, select your phone, then on your phone navigate to want you want a screenshot of, click refresh and then press save.

I hate to be the one to say this cause I def agree that 5Mbps is better the 3Mbps but even 5Mbps is not HSPA+ if we all remember HSPA theoretical max is 14.4 with HSPA+ theoretical max at 42Mbps up and 84Mbps down. now I realize that we will never see 84Mbps but 8.4 is def possible. So all I say to you guys is don't let at&t off the hook with 5Mbps

Yeah unfortunately the speeds you're getting are 3G nothing more nothing special. I got the exact same speeds on my HTC tilt 2 and on my LG Quantum. Hopefully (fingers crossed) they do nothing but talk about the end of march as an activation date for their 4G aka HSPA+ (not true 4G) or at least by june. But with ATT one can only hope. I do have to say perhaps they have fixed something in NY for you cause I've heard that signal and speed up there is horrible

So I was in downtown Myrtle Beach this evening which is like a ghost town in the winter and decided I would try some speed tests at mobilespeedtest.com. On doing 3, 5, and 7mb downloads I was getting insanely fast speeds. Any ideas? Did my phone cache the download? I was using the stock android browser and running CM7 b#55.
Thanks

It's a fluke, I've done it as well. The more you test it the faster it says your speeds are, the most accurate is the speedtest app on the market. That will give you true speed test results.

When I use the Speedtest.net app in the market my download speed is continually climbing, and never seems to max out. I also noticed that instead of saying UTMS or whatever it used to say it just says cell. This was a speedtest.net result from last night. I have seen it climb into the 8000s, but my sdcard was full of junk so I cleaned it out when I wiped for CM7. Here is my speed test app result which was done inside with about 3 bars HSPA+. I did a mobilespeedtest.com when I was outside and was so stunned I didn't do another app test. Also note that when I do smaller file sizes on mobilespeedtest my results get slower.

I've seen some weird speedtest stuff. My Speedtest is rarely over 3-4mbps.
During actual downloads I see 7-9mbps (about 1100KB/s is what it topped out at.) This is not peak, this is sustained. It fluctuates somewhat but I tested it out for over an hour and it averaged out at 890KB/s. That's over 7mbps, average, held for over an hour. I was impressed That's faster than my crappy home internet.
So why do I get speedtests that do not reflect this? Hell if I know.
(Experimenting a bit on the last day of my billing month, so I was not worried about burning through data )

i don't consider mobilespeedtest.com to match anything in the real world....My G2 just scored >27000 kbps/s.....Even 2 years ago my G1 scored like 10900, which is just not possible.......i believe speedtest.net gives better (much lower) estimates....

I just tether and use the PC for speed tests. Typically a usenet client. If all you have is a phone, you could dl a large file and simply time it.
Then divide file size by time and you have your speed.
Crude/low-tech but it'll do.
Typicalll....
When I'm connected to HSPDA (90% of the time), I get an average of 6MBPS down and up to a little over 8. Anywhere in that range.
In Washington, DC
In NYC it's a little more bogged, but I'll usually see 4-5 down.

Man LTE is sooooo amazing. But the uploading being 22 is f**king awesome!
just thought I would clear this up, The high uploads are due to the speedtest app not being able to measure LTE uploading correctly.
These scores are completely inaccurate.
It might as well say 99999999.9999999mbps upload.

Oh that makes sense. But I get those download speeds on my Moto Atrix!
Is anyone else having a problem with their atrix switching to Edge? I'll try to run a speed test or watch a video and it will just randomly switch to edge, then no signal, then back to H. What's the deal?
That was the point of this post. Most atrixes (Atrices?) are faster than this. Mine gets 5 down
Intersting results - mine were much different in Phoenix AZ.
I think in general the speedtest app is broken. When doing it on the webpage I was getting more consistantly between 15-20 MBps download and 5 MB upload.
I am actually giving back my atrix tomorrow. Best phone I have ever had, but the network is not even 3g speed out here (even with a microcell in my house I still can not get over 1.5 MB download and we all know about the stellar upload speed)

LTE uses a single channel(SC)-FDMA while WiMax still uses OFDMA for their respective uplink signaling. OFDMA is what 3G uses, hence why you can still get an accurate reading on the Evo.

if its any help when I had my Iphone and the speed test app it had a little graph that shows your speeds as the test is running. I would always see my Iphone spike right from the start at a high speed then fall and work its way back up to a lower speed then the first spike. Maybe the same thing is happening here but the test is so fast on speak easy it doesn't give the phone a chance to drop off that first spike. Where with speed test the test it self is a lot longer so I think it would better reflect an accurate rating.

Hsupa+ is not enabled on our phones yet so once that firmware update goes out those in the "4g" areas should see a speed increase. I know their map shows me as being in a 4g area and I am wondering what kind of speed increase I will be seeing.
is sacramento hspa+ already? I ask csr they dont know a damn thing and my phone is slow as hell. I want my iphone 4 back!!!
One thing to note is that the Speedtest app uses your location data to pick the closest server. Sometimes that location data is off or inaccurate and it picks some test server on the other side of the country.
Sometimes the speedtest.net app shows my phone at less than .50 down. Then wait a few minutes and then try some more it goes up. The highest I have seen is about 3.0 down. I am "supposed" to be in a live 4g area, but under "about phone/status" it always shows HSDPA.
I know that the Atrix will not be compatible with AT&T LTE. When comparing Verizon's LTE with ATT's HSPA+, Verizon blows it out of the water. While I know that HSPA+ will never be as fast as LTE, does anyone know if there are plans to improve the speed of HSPA+ on ATT? I think it's able to perform speeds of 14 mpbs but the reports I have seen actually put it at 2-4 mbps.
Thanks,
Matt

They could very easily increase our speed, but the real question is "will they?".
It might be they are going to keep HSPA+ where it is because the network won't handle the volume of traffic, or might be because they want people to jump on LTE when they start that, (enthusiasts buying new LTE phones so they can utilize the faster speeds). in reality, we don't know, but can hope!
AT&T is slowly improving backhaul from what I hear. This should increase it pretty significantly, as T-Mobile is making similar improvements and seeing speeds in the 5+ mbps range. The most I've seen is 4.7 Mbps on my Atrix (up from 1.5 on my old Aria), so I know that the phone is capable of pretty significant speeds. The HSPA+ 14.4 radio on the Atrix is likely to top out at around 7-10 mbps once all the network improvements have been finished.
Most of the towers are fast enough already but they get bogged down easily by many more people using it than it can handle, when they increase bandwidth you'll see improvements

Appologies for my ignorance, but what app are you using to measure speed?

Speedtest, pretty much the standard we all use:
Speedtest Mobile
If you use it, make sure to check settings and select the server closest to you. Speedtest can have a habit of picking a very distant server for you. Also, it sometimes pays to try different servers, as speed results will vary depending on the server and who runs it.

Just as a recommendation, if you get consistently varied results on the Speedtest app you can try different servers but also try http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/. It seems to give me far more consistent results, but I'm not sure about anyone else. The desktop page should load fine with that strong Flash support!
Yup, Speakeasy is another good one!

tethering (hack) to my macbook air over wifi.
I don't get it I keep seeing them post speeds of 200-300KBps with HSPA+........ running speedtest on my GS2 I'm getting around 1.5MBps and yes I mean Byte and not bit. HSPA+ in theory can go to 21mbps so there is still room to grow to at least 2MBps with HSPA+. Then with DCHSPA+ with the Nexus 4 on paper you can reach speeds of 4-5MBps and my friend who lives in another country has a DCHSPA+ modem and he is speedtested it for me and got 3.8MBps.
I see all these LTE 4G speeds and they're getting from 21mbps - 32mbps in most cases which is like 2.5MBps -4MBps in speed.
I mean I'm getting not far off that right now with Three in the UK on my GS2 and I haven't even tried a DCHSPA device yet, I'm not sure if three support it.
I don't get where these sites are getting 200-300KBps speeds from?
On T-Mobile with the galaxy s2 I got speeds around 15Mbps down and about 3-4Mbps upload on their HSPA+42. Nexus 4 should get the same. Although T-Mobile has very limited HSPA+ where I am living now so I won't be able to test in that same area for a while.. Those reviews are garbage, just saying

Yeh so you're getting like 1.8MBps which tbh is more than enough for a mobile but also close to these poor LTE speeds which are really just DCHSPA+ speeds.

It's more than enough for what I need data for, which is basically streaming music, the occasional youtube video, and webpages/checking email.

It's also not much slower than LTE right now......
I don't see how all these sites seem to be getting such low speeds.
Its just depends on your luck on how close the celltower is to you. At my work its over 20Mbps with an SII, at home its more around 5Mbps.
I have seen lots of t-mobile and AT&T cell sites. Really depends on if they have upgraded to a true fiber, like using the local Comcast or other high speed provider. Or if they are still using the multiple t1 lines to power it.
A lot of sites with multiple cell providers, usually AT&T will have copper into site, while the others have a fiber connection. Just depends. =/ Even if you see fiber into the cell site, it can just mean they are using it for distance run, coming from t1 station down the road.
Some of these sites have some really old stuff in them. Kinda hit or miss on the ones that have a really good internet connection to them.
My input. Just from seeing the cell sites.
And if you are right under a cell site, you never connect to that one...to much signal. It connects you to one further away

They must be using AT&T because their HSPA+ network can be pretty slow sometimes, compared to T-Mobile that is. In my area AT&T gets about 2-4Mbps down and maybe 1Mbps up.
I had my father's galaxy s2 (42mbps) and my galaxy nexus (21mbps) right next to each other dieting a speed test.
Galaxy s2 always got double the speed. He was getting 14mbps and I couldn't break 7mbps
I know radios and software and everything else come into play, but the potential for more is there

Unless you're on att or coming from another carrier to tmo and not sure what you'll get why would you be worried about this. If you're already on tmo you should get the same or better speeds, correct?

And I'm pretty sure there will be different radios we can install. I'll probably install the radio I have on my sgs2.

I was wondering how the speeds actually were since I'll be coming from Verizon.
With tmo in south fla you will get around 8-23 down and 1-5 upload.
What about speeds for AT&T in southern california?
Here is a wild guess; (most) reviewers are in an area which was affected by Sandy.
That's just B.S. I live close to DC area and I got upto 21 MBPS on my HTC ONE S. LTE doesn't necessarily mean its faster than HSPA+ .T-Mo's HSPA+ is awesome but probably ignorant people can't tell the difference.
You can check data speeds for your carrier at rootmetrics. In my area, T-Mobile gets at best 1 mb download. Verizon has LTE here which gets 20 - 30 mbps. Stupid fast. That being said, I'm probably going with AT&T via Straight Talk.

This is a very bad idea.
1) The flash will most likely fail.
2) If it did somehow flash your baseband will be screwed.
These are theoretical speeds, anyway. I have never had more than 7 or 8 Mbps down on my phone. And it just depends on cellphone traffic through that particular tower, I think. I have done speed tests countless times when I barely crack 1 Mbps on "HSPA+".
This is what I am getting with t-mobile, and i am happy lol
