Hi.
For some reason, all Sms that are over a certain length (looks like 160 chars) get delivered as 2 separate texts! This happens in the stock sms app and on Handcent. There is an option on Handcent that says 'Split 160', but this is for sending messages, and is set to 'Dont Split'.
Its getting really annoying because the texts just split a word within the the middle of it.
Anyone else have the problem??
This is the standard behavior of SMS... the protocol is limited to 160 characters. However the receiving phone should rebuild the message.
For me it does not split the mess, it (the one time it happened) converted it to an mms :-$ so the reciever (with an old phone) did not get it :-\

That's weird... I get the correct behavior and the message goes as MMS only if I attach an image
There is an option to have it convert to MMS if it's greater than 3 SMS's (I think).. on the premise that if your paying for your texts it will be cheaper to send 1 MMS than 3 SMS... you can switch it off in the menus somewhere.

Yep i know what you mean the same happened to me 2 Days ago when i was texting with a Friend. Although it never happened before. All SMS over 160 Characters i got delivered in Split SMS. I thought it is a Error with the Cell Operator , the next Day all was back to normal again.
i got the problem when i type over 3sms it gets turnd into a mms
As lornova said above, the SMS standard limits each SMS to be 160 characters in ASCII or 70 characters in Unicode. This is called SMS concatenation.
Basically, if your SMS is over 160 characters long, your handset will split it over two SMS messages and send both. On the receiving end, the handset of the receiver will know that the two SMS messages are concatenated so it will join them together. This is transparent to both the sender and receiver so they will see it as one message.
Support for SMS concatenation depends on the handset (which most handsets support) and the operator's SMSC.
However, three SMS changing into an MMS is new to me. But since there can only be a maximum of two concatenated SMS, this is a clever solution.
I see. I guess the 'joining' isnt working properly on the X10 then! Is there a setting or something I need to configure?

That's not what he is talking about. As far i understand he talks about his RECEIVED sms over 160 characters get split on his Xperia not what he sends.
I can reproduce that error as it happens to me too. What i send perfectly stays in one SMS even over 160 Characters but sometimes SMS which i receive from others with like 240 Characters get split in 2 SMS on the Xperia inbox.
That's strange. I can't reproduce the problem. I sent a long SMS (200 characters) from a Sony Ericsson W980 to a Sony Ericsson X10, and the X10 managed to join it just fine so that it appears as one message.
It appears as one message on the stock Android Messaging inbox and on the chompSMS application.
It may not be the X10. Maybe your operator's SMSC does not support the concatenated SMS.
SMS unsplitting depends on the sending carrier
I have a Nexus One running Android 2.3 (CyanogenMod 7.1.0).
Long text messages (over 160 chars) received from Verizon phones get unsplit correctly, and I see them as one message. Long messages received from AT&T (the handset is an HTC Vivid running Android as well), are not recombined, and I see the as a bunch of 160-characters SMSes.
This is super annoying, but it looks like there's no app that can simply let me manually merge an SMS into another.

I am no expert in this, but I believe x10 doesn't cause this,in my case and in where I live,I have never receive any split messages for quiet a long time already..(years...)and I often send and receive sms of more than 500 character and it is sent, received and displayed just fine.I strongly believe, this is due to your carrier, however,I just have no proof, and below is the screenshot me sending an sms to myself in more than 1000 characters, and I send, received and displayed just fine.
Have a nice day

Even before Android, SMS was 160 characters. Some phones had the options or only allowed one or more choices of: messages ends at 160 characters - end of message and the sender has to manually create a new message to continue (and you naturally get more than one message), the sender types indefinitely and the messages splits into 2 (or more) SMS, OR it changes into a MMS. This is not something the receiver has a choice on. It's the person's phone who sends the message and the options they pick (and are allowed) that cause this. Android is the same way... since SMS and MMS is still the same though I don't know what the MMS limit is.
There may be a carrier default (aside from the 160 SMS characters which is universal). Often there's options the sender either doesn't know about or hasn't changed. Many have unlimited text so it doesn't matter if they send 14 SMS messages at once.
Are you on a custom rom?

if it is a custom rom and it comes from a cdma handset this could be the issue as cdma doesnt support longer than 160,,, so it may cause such issues.
miui roms have issues like this sometimes.
Hi guys just my 2 cents, don't know the rates if an mms in ur country. But my advice if you are going to write a long mesh always use Mms as it gives u 1000 words n will cost you cheaper than sending a long mesg via SMS like 3 parts which will cost u more..n mms are just fine, u don't need to attach a pictures along with it. I can just use mms as a normal SMS if u want to write a big mesg....cheers

woohoo downloading it now and testing it shortly.....will e-mail with bugs if i find em.....but hopefully some "windex' should kill it.......
*edit*
i've sent an e-mail
Hardware: T-Mobile MDA (US)
iMate 2.16 ROM
Connected via GPRS/EDGE
Bugs/Suggestions:
Google: "Fatal error! Received non jabber packet." this occurs when trying to sign on to Google from Agile. I've tried two differnet methods of typing the user name as well as just username.
MSN: Can't use the tab key to go from user name to password field.
Yahoo: Can't use the tab key to go from user name to password field.
AOL: Can't use the tab key to go from user name to password field.
Also the splash screen at startup, should be changed to disappear if keypress/screentap.
And selecting a service seems a bit sluggish on the Wizard.
Not in e-mail:
I don't use ICQ or XMPP(???) so can't say much to that....
It's installed!!!
only using msn...
I miss one thing... backspace in an empty textfield (when a chat was open) used to close the open chat-window before ...that would be great to have in this version too
Excellent
Downloading now...

Hey guys...dont post the bugs here!! email them.
You CAN post here as well as to send a copy of the post to Agile via email...
Workin great
Actually it would be greatly appreciated if you just send your comments to .
If they are posted here the team that is working on this build will not get your comments.
Thank you,
Seth
i heard agile supports PTT (Push To Talk) is that true & how can we use it
I am sending the following to but I want to post my comments here in case others see the same issues:
1. Can't use keyboard to tab between username/password fields on connect screen.
2. Successfully signed in with ICQ/AIM/MSN/Yahoo but can't get Gtalk to sign on.
3. When Agile is displayed in horizontal screen mode, some features are truncated. I will attach a screenshot to the email I send.

4. When in horizontal mode, can the text input box be shrunk to a single line? The message history window only displays 4 lines of text in horizontal and we really don't need two lines worth of input. I will attach a screenshot.
So far it's looking very good! Thanks so much for your efforts!

That way, you don't get 500 users reporting the same bug..
Not a bug....but I wish there was a vibrate Alert function instead of just sound. I will add this suggestion to any bug submissions. I just installed it so I will play with it for a bit before doing a bug submission.

I agree. Also, when the phone is in sleep mode I do not get a sound alert. The screen does come alive and I see that I have a messege, but I have to start to respond to see what the message is. So if the phone is in my pocket when I recieve a message I will not know it and the screen will be activated. This could cause buttons to be pressed by accident.
Has anyone else had their groups mixed up? I have people that should be in a specific group, but now they have been put into a group called "Ungrouped Contacts" and I can not move them. Also, my contact list shows some contacts as online, when they are not. Anyone else have this same problem?

Below is the bug report that I submitted. I thought I would post here so that others could see if they are having the same problem and/or correct me on what I have listed.

Subject: Bug Report: Agile Messenger WM5.0 Alpha Release
Hello,
Below I have listed a few things I would consider to be bugs as well as a few items I think would be useful to add to the build. Please see the two sections below and let me know if you need more detail. Overall the product seems to be working very well, especially for an Alpha release. Great job, keep it up!!
Please note that I am using a Verizon Pocket PC phone model XV6700 running Windows Mobile 5.0. OS 5.1.1700, Build 14354.0.1.1 Also, I am only using the AOL service at this time.
Bugs (AOL only)
Can not use the tab key on the keyboard to move from field to field.
Some contacts have been moved from their specific groups into a group called "Ungrouped Contacts". These contacts can not be moved out of this group. When I attempt to move the contact I receive a message that says "Contact XXX does not exist"
When I expand a group the contacts appear above the group name, not under it. This happens to only one group.
A contact is shown as online when they are not signed on. I know they are not signed on because it is another screen name that I have been using to test the service.
When my phone is in sleep mode and I receive an IM message the audio alert does not play. The screen does become active but there is no sound.
Not sure this is a bug but, I can not register more then one screen name. How can I sign onto another screen name?
Wishlist
A vibrate alert would be very helpful
The ability to combine alerts, i.e. Audio Alert + Vibrate Alert, Audio Alert only, Vibrate only etc.
The ability to have an alert repeat for a specified amount of time. For example, play sound or vibrate until message is acknowledged or for a specified amount of time, 5,10 min etc.
The option to not activate the screen when a message is received and the phone is in sleep mode. This would be good if audio alerts worked when in sleep mode.
The ability to register multiple screen names for a service and then pick the one you want to use for your session.
Resizing
I've just installed on a 8125 ,seeems i have problem when the screen try to resize from preferences to the home page and landscape mode too
Please remember to send your comments to ; the developers and quality control are not monitoring this forum.
Also please make sure you SPECIFY THE DEVICE you are testing with in your feedback, so that they can quickly replicate, and solve the problems.
Much appreciated,
Seth
Hello Friends,

I would rather think that you write your TXT message within messmo and it verifies if the recipient is a messmo user.
- If yes, then the TXT is sent as is free of charge
- If not the TXT will be sent via your own provider's SMS service and charged as usual
Sascha
correct ! ! you can exchange free sms between any messmo users in any coutry.
messmo uses gprs to send messages, so if the other person also has messmo, then they can exchange sms for free irrespective of their country.
so grab the software . . . make your messmo friend cirlce and start sending sms for free with an attachment ! !
isn't it coooool?

There is no restrictions on country area. You can send sms globally.Recently Messmo has launched new version with 2 new features- Voice message and Real MMS. Now you can send a voice message to your friends, no need to spend money on making calls. Really Messmo is the best for instant messaging in the world.

Send sms to multiple contacts.
How To:
- type your message on the first box. if you want the name of your contact to appear in your message, just type in @@@ where you want the name to appear inside the message.
- add contacts in your list: Menu > Add Contact
- save your list for future uses: Menu > Save List
- load your list: Menu > Load List
- sending sms: Send menu will show SIM1 and SIM2 because this application was written for ACER DX900 dual sim phone but using it on a single sim WM device will also work.
- after pressing send, the application will hide itself, and will reshow itself after the task is done.
change log:

I have three items on my wish list for future versions.
1) Enable the clipboard feature for copy/paste.
2) Have a Character counter
3) Be able to save/ load Multiple contact list.

3) Be able to save/ load Multiple contact list.

handy, cheers.
oldsap,
Potentially highly useful.
However I think it lacks three options to make it the best SMS sending software available:
- Directly importing contact category(ies) such as GroupSMS.
- Automatically use the mobile phone number, no need to select a phone number for each contact.
- Being able to send SMS using the firstname only as sending an email to your friends with their lastname looks a bit too comemrcial oriented to me.
The_Steph
- Directly importing contact category(ies) such as GroupSMS.
- i didn't want to touch the contact details that's why i made a list
- Automatically use the mobile phone number, no need to select a phone number for each contact.
- some people, like me, save 2 or more mobile phone numbers for each contact that's why i added an option to be able to choose to which number you want to send the sms to
- Being able to send SMS using the firstname only as sending an email to your friends with their lastname looks a bit too comemrcial oriented to me.
- i can add that option
Very cool, thanks for sharing!

I thought the exact same thing. I noticed I was sending a few more messages today then usual, though. It went off for ~2 hours and now I can text again. Makes me think twice about completely ditching my phone for a tablet with google voice though..
I generally send ~6,500-7,000 texts a month using gvoice and haven't ever encountered this. Were you sending lots of them in a very short amount of time? I am wondering if an anti-spam feature was kicking in or something.
I would say it's a spam detergent kicking in. In the second picture the error message says "too many at once"

I don't even know how many I send (where'd you get that number?) but usually I text one or 2 people sun up to down replying every 3 minutes or so. Today I doubled that and messaged about 5 people and around 5:40 -ish I started getting this error. I was able to send one or two messages from Gmail to SMS, then that stopped working.
I get this message when I attempt to send text messages to too many contacts at one time via the google voice website or the google chrome web browser extension. I think the limit is 5 at once. I use google voice all the time for texting and that message doesn't have anything to do with your text messaging limit.

I was only sending to one at a time...
Guys, I have had this happen to me many a-times.
It's Google, it has nothing to do with Sprint.
I think it's more likely to happen if you are texting many different numbers in a short period of time, especially if they have a different area code than you.
The only way to text is to have them forward to your phone and text via sms on your phone. [not the google voice app]
It's really ridiculous.
I like how the immediate response isn't "I wonder what's going on?" But rather "OH HELL NOGRRBL".
I find there's an amazing absence of patience or even a modicum of good old fashioned benefit-of-the-doubt until you're sure of what's actually going on. If anything happens that even remotely inconveniences people, we default to angry entitlement and have to be coaxed and spoiled before we even consider the possibility of being willing to think about listening to any scenario that doesn't involve Google/Sprint/whoever being anti-consumer.

I don't txt much but I've got this a few times myself after I switched over to google voice. Anti Spam?

Yeah, it is anti-spam and I think the algorithm is messed up.
There are two things that tick me off the most about this:
1) IT SHOULD NOT APPLY IF YOU ARE USING THE GV APP TO TEXT
2) IT SHOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT APPLY IF YOU'VE DONE THE SPRINT INTEGRATION
But alas, it's all up to Google to correct.

If this it's a google voice rule, then it should ABSOLUTELY apply IF and ONLY IF you're using google voice... Why would Sprint interfere with google or vice versa?
And why would it matter whether you've done the Sprint integration? You're still using google voice devices via Sprint's unlimited data connection...
Besides, it kinda looks like he was sending the sane text to multiple recipients - perhaps that is what caused him to hit the limit so fast?

Because Sprint integration means you're using it as your primary line so of course thousands of texts are to be expected.
I've personally reached this limit before.
It seems to occur more often when I text multiple numbers not in my area code.
A friend of mine never gets this, she texts 4239472349834923 texts a month but never texts someone outside of her area code.
The algorithm seriously needs a redo.
I'm more confused then angry. There was absolutely NO warning at all of my "limit" running out. Or a limit being in place at all. And, as I've said, I wasn't sending to multiple recipients. Just one person. After I send that, I respond to another one. Not both at the same time.
You should ask Google Voice for a refund.

Actually if you read the help/knowledge base at all you'd see a lot of talk about it.
So I have Hangouts which I use for texting (via Google Voice features to be more specific).
Since GVoice isn't supported as a default messaging app, I've been using Hangouts.
However, on my S8, I can't make Hangouts my default messaging app since it doesn't appear as an option.
I've installed other SMS apps to see if it was some bigger issue, though they're listed properly.

Is anyone else having a similar issue and/or know how to solve it?
I thought hangouts disabled non-voice SMS features awhile back. So you can SMS via your hangouts (e.g. "voice") number within hangouts, but anything to do with SMS inside hangouts is not considered "SMS" outside of hangouts—e.g. by the phone device.

Ugh. That's what I was afraid of.
I was using Hangouts on an older phone; maybe I was able to skirt around that disabling for a bit...
So basically there's nothing out there I can use as my default messaging app for my GV texts?

Good question and I hope you get an answer to it.
In the meantime, as long as you have the APK for an older version that still integrated SMS, I don't see why you can't just uninstall the version on your S8 and replace it by sideloading the old APK. Or just get the version number and download it from any number of APK archive sites on the web.
Go to settings/apps and make sure hangouts has all the permissions enabled (including messages). After that, go back to hangouts and try to make it your default messaging whiting the app after you've enabled its permissions. Please report back if this works.

Yeah, it's a shame. Google has so many chat products, and can't simplify a simple universal messaging service.
This is a good article about the Hangouts/SMS/Google Voice fallout recently. https://www.wired.com/2017/01/google-voice-update-makes-googles-messaging-strategy-confusing/
Nah even with all permissions enabled it's still not recognized by the OS as a possible default messaging app.

Thanks for the link! It's indeed a real cluster...
I was initially looking into porting my GV number to my carrier (who knows when Google will shut-down GV altogether), but since I still need my carrier's number it's a dead end.

Tried it with current GPlay version (18.0) but still no option available.
The permissions were initially turned off, but even after enabling all of them there was no option in either Hangouts either or the default app section.

Awesome suggestion which seems to have worked!
Well, sort of.
I ended up getting the last version before the official SMS removal (17.0).
Lo and behold, the SMS section appeared in Hangouts' options:
Through there, I selected Hangout as my default SMS app, as well as my GVoice number and account to be the default sender:
I then used Google Assistant to text a contact...
Which ended up using Hangouts (yay) but through my carrier's SMS (boo). It's also two separate threads in Hangouts (one with texts sent via GV, another via the carrier).
So, almost back to square one (the goal being to default-text via GV across the device).
Since Hangouts is the default SMS app, I'm guessing the current issue may be that the vocal command for "texting" is somehow tied to the carrier's SMS in lieu of GV. Especially since Hangouts' SMS default is GV...
Hangouts is moving support for SMS. Got a notification on my s6 the other day. Messages by Google is the new app specifically for SMS MMS like things now.
I know.....mmmmmm ghey...
I'm in the same boat. I hate native cell text messaging (and test messaging in general). GV has always been the lifesaver for me. But it is a pain that it no longer can register as a messaging app.
I honestly don't care what app is used as long as it routes the SMS through GV and does not require cell connection to be active and messages are stored server side on Google so are searchable and available on all devices.
Switched to a new phone and was not able to reply to SMS messages via my Google voice number. So I uninstalled Hangouts, sideloaded version 16, set my default SMS app to Google Hangouts through version 16 and it went back to working. I then updated the Hangouts app and it informed me that SMS will no longer work. So I pressed the show me button in the message to close the persistent notification, it sent me to the Android Messaging app that I closed and I can now use Hangouts to send SMS again. Hope that helps.
I just tried this and it looks like it no longer works. After it forces me to update to the latest version of Hangouts my default messaging app goes back to Messages and Hangouts is no longer an option. Does anybody else have any ideas?
