Ive read alot about them all and gumbo is new but seems like it has has potential of being the best and fastest ROM. But I'm asking everyone else? What have you tried? and Which are you choosing to stay with?
darchs and Flipz are great. Never tried the gumbo one.
YMMV
I tried Flipz & Co 2.1 and it felt kind of heavy. Then I switched to Gbhils and it felt snappier. Havent tried Darchstars but my recommendation is: try them all, use whichever suits your needs.
The best one is the one that most suits you. Functionally all are equally capable, choose the one you like.
have used darchstars AOSP 2.1 for a long time and flashed the new one on the 2nd. but today i flashed the new 2.1 by toast and flipzmod which is definetly nice. BUT seriously there nothing of the same AOSP is a whole different genre then FLIPZ stuff due to the fact that AOSP is like gsm and what FLIPZ is HTC Sense and stuff you definetly need to know what you are wanting before deciding which to go with. I will say flipz 2.1 has bluetooth working all the way threw as to were darchs only has it working for stero bluetooth (music no calls), also flipz and quietcblongs just released a patch u can do with the android sdk and cmd to GET MMS WORKING so at the moment i am using theres cause i like the MMS and BT working until darch fixing that. i will note that darchs is 2.1 AOSP meaning its a beautiful port of NEXUS with all the nice features of that including live wallpapers and nexus launcher.... sooo your decision lol. Also i would comment on GBHILS but i never knew he had one hmm going to central and doing some searching.....
i have tried them all. Right now im liking Gumbo 2.1
Darchs is incredibly fast. no BT phone and no MMS. but you cant slow it down if you tried. my fav by far. no sense but that also means you get alot more resources.
toasts is rough still to me but cant really blame him i mean him and flipz uploaded like 3 hours after leak. it has sense and BT works fine. but still on my little test of roms i play rhapsody over BT and turn to landscape and it stops the music a lil. but still a great looking rom.
downloading gumbos now i will edit when test.
I tried them all.. and GBHIL 2.1a is the fastest so far.. no lag.. and verrrry fast..
I had been running the DarchDroid for the last few days, and had no complaints. It is fast and really stable. I don't use BT & I didn't think I missed Sense. That is until I started playing with Flipz yesterday. I flashed it, and enjoyed having Sense again. Overall it is a surprisingly well-finished ROM. I had a few issues which seemed to be fairly isolated, having to re-enter my Google psswd after every reboot. I also found it to get pretty sluggish at times. I know Sense is partially, if not mostly, to blame. I'm getting ready to give the Gumbo ROM a run. Just my $2/100.
I went from AOSP 2.1 -> DarchDroid -> CDMA Hero Eclair 2.8v2.
So far the Hero Eclair is BY FAR my favorite (full Sense UI for the win), but I'd like to try the Gumbo ROM.
Definitely try the Gumbo.. Its delicious...
Gumbo is incredible. GPS works perfectly on google nav, super quick, no force closes for me.
i agree the gumbo 2.1 is on point very snappy and responsive no forces closures what so ever..i think minus the camera and a couple widgets this is gonna be a very close comparison to the hailed sprint 2.1 update
Tried all three and...
Loaded gbhil's Gumbo 2.1a this morning, and it seems considerably more responsive than Flipz. Still having the annoyance of re-entering my Google pswd after each boot (same with both Sense enabled 2.1 ROMs). My vote is for Gumbo 2.1a if you want Sense. If not DarchDroid is terrific.
I tried them all.. and i think if AOSP 2.1 DarchDroid could sync with the facebook contact like CDMA Hero Eclair 2.8v2 do this ona should be the best
i know i know my english suck
ohh gumbo doesn't let u sync wiyh facebook to
I've flashed them all back to back, created nandoid backups of each, went back and forth for awhile... (Darch, Flipz, Gbhil) and have finally settled with Gbhil's Gumbo rom. Can't beat how quick and responsive it is! I'm sure that Flipz can be just as quick with a more optimized kernel like Gumbo has, as I'm sure Flipz and team are hard at work making magic happen
Flipz rom doesn't have the task-killer tweak enabled. Theres the Autokiller app on the market that will enable the tweak on any 2.0 rom. It speed up things alot.

ROM with the least amount of keyboard lag when typing

I could care less of the overall speed of the 2.1 roms because it seems they are all basically the same thing anyways. However, some devs are saying their roms have no lag at all. And everyone I have flashed, sure enough I have that keyboard lag. I've tossed in the aosp mms.apk and that seems to greatly improve the typing for some reason, however I am actually fond of the HTC stock messaging app. Basically I want to know who's rom has the least amount of keyboard lag using the htc keyboard/xda keyboard. Or any tips to speed it up, and don't say use swype.
I miss the speed of gumbo 1.5.
I have the same problem as well. I'm considering trying one of the overclock roms, but I don't have a class 6 SD Card yet.
I've found moderate improvement flashing the AOSP keyboard, you might want to try that. Here's a downloadable zip, just flash it from BL screen.

I would think that trying different keyboards would have more of an effect on the keyboard speed than the ROM itself. Also haptic feedback slows down the keyboard for sure, you can disable this in the settings menu.
Fresh 2d with no haptic feedback and no keyboard sounds is fast enough for me

HANDS DOWN, Chocmatic's 2.1v5 rom. Fastest kb out there for the 2.1.
www.chocmatic.net
Any 2.1 rom will treat you just fine. Use the AOSP keyboard with haptic feedback and sounds turned off, and you'll be texting like a high school girl in no time.
I think it was DC v1.0, the one based on the Eris leak. The keyboard lag went away and then he started using the Sprint leak and the lag is back and worse than ever. Mainly when typing in the browser not so much when texting.
SMART KEYBOARD PRO
That is all.

1.5 stock rom seems faster than 2.1?

I unrooted my phone and returned it to stock to send it for replacement after it quit charging.. I hate to say it but 1.5 seems so much smoother than the 2.1 roms i've been using. Hopefully it's just the fact that everything 2.1 is using a test base and not an official release? I know i'll be rooting my replacement and going back to 2.1 when i get it just for the added features, but i was really surprised how well 1.5 ran on my phone. Especially the keyboard... There was no lag and i've been used to lag for a while. Anyone else notice this?
I noticed the same thing. Seems 2.1 is just slower no matter what rom I use. I don't think it is optimized as well as 1.5, but that will probably change once the kernel source is released.

I like Aloysious's roms. They seem pretty petty... Just dont use one that has Live wallpapers, as the openGL ( I think its called ) lags pretty bag.
Huh...maybe that's the issue. It just seems like the ones I've tried seem to lag a lot. I thought that was because 2.1 was larger than 1.5.
I don't think I've tried Aloysious...I'll give it a test drive.

Mostly i've been using Fresh and Damage roms. Recently i switched to Sushi rom with most of the sense crappola stripped out and JIT enabled. It seems the fastest of the three probably because of the lack of a lot of sense components. There are certain things about sense that i really like such as the calender widget and contacts. Also i do like the sense facebook for syncing my contact pictures. Otherwise i don't really care much about sense. The weather clock is cool, but im really into beautiful widgets in conjuction with Weather bug elite widget. Maybe when we get an official release AND the source to the new kernel so the devs can work their magic we'll have a 2.1 rom that REALLY screams.
Also, i gave up on live wallpapers a while back as i really don't like the fix which is actually breaking Opengl to make the live wallpapers stick. If you have Opengl on your phone and don't apply the fix and use a live wallpaper you will see that it is much more fluid. Just won't stick after your phone sleeps. Too bad too cuz i REALLY got a kick out of seeds of life. The perverted side of me really liked watching those little sperm swim around on my home page.

something weird with 2 vibrants

hello all
I found something funny
I've purchased myself a vibrant about 1 1/2 month ago
it was all nice, problems with gps as do many have, and besides it had few lags here and there..
I flashed bionix final along with upgraded rom of JAC
all is ok
still little lags here and there.
last week I purchased a vibrant for a friend...
took it to my hands to install him some apps, plus rooting the phone and etc...
his phone is with stock VJFD version (should be old by now, and that what also came on my phone)
his phone has totally no lags...
my score in quadrant for example is about 960
his score is about 880
his phone starts faster, reloads everything faster, shutsdown faster, and general feeling in the interface is that it is much faster.
is it possible by any way?
does it make sense that both phone act very differently?
my phone never felt as smooth as the newer phone does, even with updated rom+kernel
is it possible the hardware was changed along the way or something else is interfereing on my phone?
Rami
Some phones work better than others. I never had lag on the stock ROM and even though my GPS was slow to make an aquisition, it still worked.
If anything, JI6 broke my compass...which now goes haywire pointing in all sorts of directions when I am standing still

DI18 2.1 unrooted > DK28 2.2 rooted

I've been playing around with this phone a lot since I got it. Today, I flashed back to DI18 and left it unrooted and found myself astonished at how much better the overall performance is.
DK28 is garbage.
If this is old news, I apologize... I just got this phone a week ago.
huh? i've only had my phone since tuesday, i haven't rooted it as of yet... but i wanted to see what that froyo is all about.
Don't do it. It's fun to play with, but like the OP said, if you want something that works reliably and well, stay stock.
Bonsai dk28 works great for me, but to each his own.

I have nothing against people who experiment with different baked ROMs on their phones--after all, where would we be without 'em?--but the performance of stock 2.1 on my Epic was already solid enough that I only really felt I needed to root for a few specific apps. I think any flashing I was going to do was always going to wait until official 2.2 was out and more development is done. I am jonesing for the new features and hopefully speed but am patient.

Agree bonsai is fantastic, no bugs what so ever and very clean and fast. Way better then 2.1 stock battery life ia about the same.
i wont go back to d118, i will miss hulu and, humans vs, aliens and andy 83 those apps only work on 2.2 and my phone has been running fantastic and way better then d118.
GPS works better!
Wifi Works perfect!
Orientation switch is fast!!
And what ever other bugs people are having im having 0
I'm running stock DK28 and it works absolutely flawless, dunno why so many have issues, I have none

I agree with the OP. I was running Nebula 1.0.7 and things were smooth for me but I went back to stock and outside of the progs that require 2.2, things are solid at least for me. Now I'm running Syndicate with Xtreme kernel and I'm loving it until we get the official Froyo

I want to go back to 2.1, but the ONLY thing that stops me is that I NEED GPS.
GPS on 2.1 is poop. I would have a hard time finding my peepee if it weren't for GPS.
I just did the exact same thing!
Running Nebula, was getting weird issues, so I went back to Syndicate with Xtreme kernel v1.2.
Ahh, everything is so snappy. I'll stick with this for a while.

It sounds like most of the people who are noticing problems are using nebula. You guys should give bonsai a try.

Lolol! I have been saying exactly this for as long as I remember. Froyo is freaking jerky. The animation transitions are not smooth.

Flashing to Midnight ROM 3.2 is the best thing I ever did.
I love my Epic 4G…I loved it with Eclair, and I am now using midNIGHT 3.2 BYOR and I love it. It’s benchmark scores are twice as fast as Eclair, and you can tell how fast and snappy the phone is. Here is a list of the things I like best that Froyo was needed for.
1. Chrome to Phone – Huge time saver and way more useful than I thought it was going to be, and I thought it would be useful, lol
2. Flash 10.1
3. The apps that needed Froyo for enhancement… Gmail, Youtube, Winamp (there is a station I like on Shoutcast and Winamp required Froyo for Shoutcast)
4. Google Docs – being able to edit Google Docs on the go. The reason I wanted a phone with a keyboard was for doing long emails and editing documents and spreadsheets. The on-screen keyboard is OK, but takes up a lot if real estate.
5. Moving apps to the SD Card – I am an app junkie and I need the space, lol
There are more things, but those are the most important to me. It is was like I got a new phone for a second time. Some of the other things I think that help make the phone better that are not Froyo “items” are the Gingerbread Keyboard (really, really good, better than iOS in my opinion), ASOP Lock Screen, and the EXT4 file system.
I still liked the phone when it had Eclair, and I wouldn’t go back and buy a different phone (and I like it on Froyo even better), it is nice hardware, awesome 5-row keyboard, and it’s AMOLED screen rocks and everyone who see’s it immediately compares it to their own back lit LCD screens, and develops a serious case of envy, lol. I am old enough to know that companies will be companies and will always make and break promises(Apple customers have to put up with a company that said their alarm was fixed in November to have it happen again in January and tells them they are holding their phone wrong). It would be nice if they always kept their promises, but they can’t. If companies were 100% honest, no one would buy their products just like if politicians were 100% honest, no one would vote for them. It would be nice to think we still would, but if we would….wouldn’t there already be 100% honest companies and politicians, lol

If Froyo is jerky and not smooth, you are doing something wrong. It works fine with a rom that isn't a piece of ****.

+1 bonsai runs way better then 2.1 and bettery life us slightly better...
Sent From My Bonsai Epic 4g
Been running TrulyEpic 1.5 and quite pleased with the performance, features, battery-life, etc. I really really like that it now boots in < 30 seconds. (I swap batteries instead of charging, so quick boot times are especially nice).
2.1 Eclair simply unusable because of the Calendar and Bluetooth Voice Search bugs.
But beyond that you're just wrong on performance in Eclair vs Froyo.
