Samsung launches official Galaxy S website! - Galaxy S I9000 General

Here the link:
http://galaxys.samsungmobile.com/
You can view the specifications and the user guide.
There the outside of the phone is explained -> no LED flash light.

hehe i love the website and the "video" nicely done!

Has anyone seen a link for a downloadable version of the Manual?

According to the spec sheet on the website, as well as DIVX and XVID the Galaxy will be able to play back h264 files in the MKV container! To the best of my knowledge, this is an absolute first for a mobile phone. As someone who watches a lot of video whilst travelling, this is fantastic news.

this will be definitely my next phone! Even if it has no flash light for the camera, but it's not an important fact for me...
And when that thing gets (hopefully) rooted, I will get rid of TouchWiz UI ;D

I can confirm: this works great! Though the tested file had variable bitrate up to 5 MBit/s and that was a bit too much for the Galaxy S. The video was played back without complaint, but it skipped frames, sometimes less, somtimes more. Still amazing. Another 720p file in an MP4-Container and fixed 1MBit video rate was flawless and stunning to watch.
The sound is also great. This tiny speaker is loud enough and not at all squeaky. Headphones still prefered, of course.

I believe this is what you're looking for?

Hasn't anybody noticed that it will ship with Flash Lite in the browser? I know it's not full Flash 10.1 like with Froyo, but still is better than nothing.

Also, reading the user manual I spotted a really interesting website: samsungdive.com
It seems that you can configure the phone to alert you when the SIM card changes, or locate the phone if you lost it, very similar to the wavesecure app. I don't know if this was available to previous samsung phones, but it seems a pretty cool addition to android, don't you think?
I'm loving even more this phone!

sounds like a pretty cool feature

It just gets better and better.
The manual also reveals that there is a TV out feature. Only PAL/NTSC via headphone jack, but better than nothing. And we still have AllShare.

Wow TV Out, I didn't spot that the first time. It's nice to be able to just plug the cable to the TV, as mine is a bit old and doesn't seem to have DLNA.
Anybody knows if you can output HD video through the headphone jack, or just standard definition?

Like I said, PAL/NTSC, which are the trusty old standard definition TV formats. The quality won't be very good also, because it is a composite signal.
Devices capable of DLNA, like media streaming boxes, are getting ever cheaper, though.

It mentions an 'optional multifunction cable' for TV out.

Erm... it seems we are not reading the same manual there. The only thing multifunctuinal in the manual is the "multifunctional jack", which is just the USB port.

Yes, the multifunction connector is a USB port, I don't deny that.
What I am saying is first on page 88 item 5 it says:-
"Ensure that the TV is on and connect your device to the
TV with a TV out cable".
The later on the following page which is page 89 item 3 of the manual it says:-
"Using an optional PC data cable, connect the multifunction jack on your device to a PC with Windows Media Player installed."

Correct, and the next step on that list is "synchronize music files". Now what have these points in common? Nothing at all.
The TV out function clearly describes the format (PAL/NTSC) and the connector (A/V, which means composite). That is an analogue connection, which is provided on the analogue headphone jack.

Does the galaxy s support x264?

Oh come on! Didn't you even read the tiniest fact sheet?

Video Out for the Tilt

Anybody know if there is a cable that can give you video-out for the Tilt?
I want to be able to plug it into my 7" screen in my truck and watch videos.
Is that even possible?

tilt doesn't support video out ... therefore no video out cable.
the tilt CAN do video out.
witness the celio redfly.

how do they do that?

Not my friend. I've lost both my GF and my dog to Google. Damn you Google!
maybe its a ***** stealer
there both WHOREZ, google is such a slut. it seems there should be some type of software to get video out. be one hell of a coding job thou.
What about http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=120353015876? It is for the Raphael, but uses the same USB proprietary plug... I know that the TyTN II does not have video out, but is it a hardware limitation, or is it a software implimentation thing?
Additionally, what about http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=280152731909? That would get you to VGA/composite... then I guess you'd run that as video, then run audio out the head phone port... I think it'd be possible that route easiest, albeit not cheapest... and as I look at it, it may only be good for still slides... like maybe it acts as a "printer port" of sorts, and you 'print' the slide to the device... bummer... I thought I was onto something there...
If you read the description of the second link, the requirement says the pda has to have an sd slot. Kaiser would not work with that solution.
Um, isn't the SD slot the thingy that I put my micro SD in? The description states that it is for a MicroSD slot... and by the picture, that sure it what it looks like...
But every thing I read, the SD Slot gets recognised as a printer device, and you 'print' your documents to the port, and the port compiles the 'pages' into slides to output for you as a slideshow...
However, I think the question with the first post stands most important... is it a software difference in the Raphael, or a hardware difference?
Hardware. The chipset in the Kaiser can technically do video out, but the required circuitry is not implemented.

Wonderful reply, thank you. If I happen across the TyTN II I want to find, I will go hacking at it and see if I can do anything with it...
Does anyone know if we have the SDIO port, or if we just have a standard SD port?
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=733&view=1
This lists it as SDIO capable.
If the Redfly and MobileMe can both do video out on the Kaiser, then I'm sure you could get the Kaiser to do video out with the right software.
The trouble is, who is going to write the software? The device has basically been discontinued, and the replacement devices all have video out. So unless you happen to come across an awesoem programmer who just happens to have a Kaiser himself, the chances of it ever happening are pretty slim.
I'm not sure if this technically counts as video out, but there's a freeware application called "mymobiler" that installs a service on your winmo device and then outputs a fully functional display of your device on your computer screen via a USB cable. I used it a few times when I was giving presentations of winmo software I was writing on my Tilt and it works well enough, although it might choke on heavy animation.
Overall not something you could just plug into a video-in somewhere, but it might be a start for those who have PC's etc. running with a touchscreen in their dash.

I am also interested by that.
Any ideas?
Basically, I would like to know if TV out is possible to connect it to my car entertainment device that I am planning to buy :
Din 1, 7 inch with DVD, GPS, Bluetoth, USB.
This will transform this device to a mobile device with a large screen from where I can surf, chat, play games etc...(launch all apps from the HTC HD2)
Any ideas?
It's not possible. Sorry, but it really is that simple.
Thanks for the answer.
Is this because of the harware that does not support it or is it because there is no driver developped by HTC?
i really think thats a driver problem only Maybe there is a way to stream video signal over wifi or bluetooth? it's kinda strange thing to do but i think it's possible using a software?
I read in a forum that via the 3,5mm jack it might be possible to video out (it was for another phone).
If Hardware does not support it via micro USB, we are stuck I guess,
If it is a driver issue, xda gurus might develep one,
If micro USB does not support it, what about the 3,5 mm jack?
I am not an expert at all, but I am just brainstorming...
Any thoughts?
This is the message I got rom HTC Support
Thank you for your enquiry about HTC HD2
To answer question 1 and 2, the HD2 does not support video out as it does not have a built in video out socket nor would you be able to achieve this via the 3,5mm jack.
It is not a built in function to handle this via bluetooth I could only suggest you try to look up some 3rd party program, but I could not provide support for this.
Best regards,
Dennis
HTC
Well actually, the HD2 does support video out! Using myMobiler you can display in full screen on your PC what's going on on your HD2. And if in turn, you connect your PC to your TV you could also watch your HD2 on your 50'' Full HD TV screen
OK, I'm joking here, the quality would be terrible, but still, it goes to show that it's possible to have video come out from the micro USB port and be displayed on a much larger screen, so maybe someone will go one step further!

I basically wanted to connect my HD2 to a Car Entertaniement device which has a 7 inch touch-screen, 'genre auto-radio', (7 ' Din1, DVD, GPS, Bluetooth, USB) in order to take advantage of all features/applications from the HTC (Google maps, dictionnaires, enclyclopedia, 3G, opera, chat etc).
Mymobiler will not help at all.
The HTC Touch Pro supports the video-out; The HTC DH2 does not support it as it is now. I have seen on http://wmpoweruser.com/ a guy making a video out cable for this LG eXpo. Check the video. Why can't we do it?
It shouldn't be difficult to make a video out cable...
Via a redfly?
If you were really committed, you could grab a Celiocorp Redfly, wait until they release the HD2 driver, then use the media cable to output to video...
Then, for the transmission of the video, you could use either bluetooth or micro-USB.
So it's technically possible with the right hardware...
The closest thing you'll get to TV out on the HD2 is the ability to set it as a media server, but that will require some kind of media browser client. I've done this with my PS3 and a Nokia N95, but the software is currently under development for the WM platform.
See here...
http://mobileosgi.blogspot.com/2009/08/dlna-media-server-for-smart-phones.html
Incidentally, they use a PS3 on the demo video, but that is not required. Also, you can use this to stream video, not just pictures.
problem is
phones that output through the 3.5 jack have an extra connector inside the socket to carry the image channel so there is no way to adapt a standard 3.5 output to carry video regardless of software. (not taking mine apart to look if its 2 or 3 chanel of course hehe)
as for through the usb im less sure but i'd guess it would only be able to send to host devices and not client peripherals. course, I'd be more than happy to be told otherwise.

The processor has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not the device can output video. It needs specific hardware to do this and it is not included in this device, neither through the USB port or the 3.5mm jack socket.
It is 100% impossible to implement a "fix" for this with software because the device simply does not have the hardware required.
Actually, Snapdragon processors DO support TV-Out. The Acer s200 (neo touch) and Toshiba TG01 both run on Snapdragon and support TV-Out. What I think the problem is, is that the hardware is there, but HTC just haven't implemented it. Meaning that they simply have not connected the function. Which is actually a shame as this was the only thing the pushed me away from this spectacular device and choose the Omnia B7610 instead, because it is a better all round device.

You need a lot more than just processor support for TV out functionality, so the hardware is not there. Some of it is, but only 1 small part.
Exactly! That's why I was disappointed with the HD2. Seeing as Acer and Tosh both implemented the tv out functionality from the core, why didn't HTC do the same? Surely it wouldn't cost them THAT much more would it?
As far as I understand, this is a hardware related issue and not driver related? If it is driver related, I am sure one day this driver would be coded and made available in this forum.
I was palnning to video out to my car DVD entertainment touch screen device in order to be able to use google maps, opera, dictionnaries etc..
This plan will ne be feasible then...
You can use the hd2 as an usb-stick. With that function i can view movies and listen to music on my Alpine touchscreen radio.

Desktop/UI via HDMI-Out

One of the biggest features I'm looking for in either the EVO or Streak (still not sure which I'm going with, gotta wait another month for the Streak to come out) is to have the Android desktop/UI/home screen sent out via HDMI. What I would hope to do is:
- be using the phone
- dock it (with HDMI to display)
- have the display show up on the TV (preferably fitting the aspect ratio and resolution of the display, though not necessarily a requirement)
The thought then would be to use a mouse and keyboard via either Bluetooth or USB (in host mode, obviously), and use the phone on the larger display to function basically as a netbook replacement (web browsing, music/videos, light gaming, light office prod. stuff).
I've seen other people on here asking around if it was possible, which it looks like it ISN'T out of the box...but maybe a developer looking for something to do might pick up on this post. You'd make a lot of people very happy!
I am also very interested in this.
So basically something like this?
http://sven.killig.de/android/N1/2.2/usb_host/
I think a good example would be the functionality that matches the current Touch Pro/Fuze TV-Out functionality... Unlike the HDMI output restrictions that are currently on the Evo device, I am able to use the entire OS (Winmo) to select start, programs, play programs, games (Tony Hawk), etc. The TV acts a full clone to what is on the phone screen itself..
I am looking for similar functionality so I can play a movie, nav, on a HDMI connected slate while the Evo is out of site (examples - vehicle screens, portable screens ). Obviously there would no input commands from the screen attached device, but a bluetooth air mouse could help out with that.
Yeah... would be nice, imagine HID bluetooth devices(wii mote controller) hook the phone to a tv, and play some classic games...

Yes, as far as input goes, but it would also need software (or a core OS update?) to push the display out via HDMI, at the same time.
I was really interested in this as a possibility, and certainly took notice of the nexus one with host USB capability. Bear in mind the Nexus One was not pushing the device's display out, it was running an X server, but still a neat idea.
I know that currently only the HTC software can push anything out of the HDMI port, but I expect it is simply a matter of applications knowing to take advantage of it, probably not even drivers.
A quick google of htc evo hdmi API gets you sprints android development site, which says the guide includes info on how your applications can take advantage of the HDMI port. I haven't messed with the android API much yet, but the only issue would be for someone to write an application that can grab the entire display, and then push it out to the port via the API.

Only thing I'd worry about there is that it isn't actually "grabbing" the screen (as in screen captures, polling it for changes, etc) because that could absolutely kill performance. That's why I wonder if it wouldn't require driver access or update, in order to actually "push" the display out the HDMI port (note: I'm not a developer, so I can only do my best to keep up with what potential issues might be. )
Any update on this?
I noticed if you read further down on the USB Host Mode page, there's info on a USB TV driver (TV IN sadly), an X11 driver (not sure which way they mean), and also DisplayLink although I think that is some kind of device you need to buy. If I could X11 remote host my Android that would be PIMP but I doubt I'll get that lucky!
I desperately want to do this myself (TV OUT from Android), whether it be HDMI or USB or whatever. I need to output the OS and apps (for demo purposes).
i was thinking the same, somewhere along the lines of PdaReach for palm devices. but the monitor being an actual TV for entertainment purposes. ...trying to get my extra ten dollar fee to use. so if and when netflix decides to make a platform for android devices we could hence watch movies on our televisions via our phones streaming to the TV

The framebuffer is unprotected on stock Evo's & rooted Evo's alike, so if you just grabbed every frame as it went through the framebuffer and outputted it to the display, it could be done easily on any Evo. That is unless HTC plugged the unprotected framebuffer bug on a new update.
In any case, it wouldn't be that hard, it'd hurt performance a little, but I don't know for sure. An app wouldn't be that hard to make, think a high speed screenshot app, talk to the devs of ShootMe about how they grab from the framebuffer.

That won't work. It's already in the Evo developer docs as posted by the person above me. All it does is take any VideoView object in any app and broadcast it over HDMI unless you specifically tell it not to in the application manifest.
There is no way to run that as a service. As of yet I've tried the following:
Copy frames via CLI from /dev/graphics/fb0 (the main screen framebuffer) to /dev/graphics/fb1 (the HDMI framebuffer) to see if it is possible to work it like that. It isn't.
Symlink the two framebuffers so in theory whatever happens to one, should happen to the other. It doesn't work either. It does do something since it breaks HDMI output, but it doesn't display the screen. This could be because the resolution doesn't match one of the TVs supported resolutions.
I'm still going to try a custom kernel once I get my build environment set up (hopefully tomorrow) with a few changes, but I can't promise anything. Anything more complicated than Java is a little over my head, but I can do a little.
I'll keep you posted.

Seems like the best way to do video out is to use DLNA (run "AllShare") and then playback on a compatible device like a HTPC (windows media player if you have windows 7) or an xbox/ps3 etc. However, it seems that avatar isn't an option for playback through this method either - DRM issues I guess?

TV knows that there's a signal, it displays a PCM, 16:9 and 1080p logos when player is powered up, or No Signal when it's powered down
Player works fine when I plugged it into a monitor that I had in another room, and I've tried 3 different HDMI cables (primary cable being an Amazon High Speed HDMI). When I had it installed on the monitor I downloaded the 5.0 upgrade, but that didn't help.
Updated TV software too, no joy.
Called Google, they said call LG. Called LG, they said it's not them.
Google talked about escalating to someone higher than the help desk, but I suspect that's stalled at least until next week. They're also offering to replace the player now too, but I'm not hopeful and increasingly convinced that there's something basically incompatible between this TV (LG 65LB6300) and the Nexus Player. If I had to describe it, it looks like when you'd set your monitor to an invalid resolution / refersh rate back in the CRT days... you might get an image for a second, but then the screen goes blank.
Any thoughts on other options that I might try or should I abandon hope and ask for a refund?
Could be a wonky hdmi cable or connection. If you have other devices via hdmi and they're working, try swapping one of those known good cables and see if it fixes it.

I've tried 3 different cables and swapping with my blueray player (blue worked fine on both ports with any of the 3 cables.
Google's troubleshooting steps include:
Step 5: Try the Nexus Player on a different TV.
If the Nexus Player works with another TV, there may be a compatibility issue between the Nexus Player and the original TV. Contact the manufacturer for additional guidance.
Feels like I've got that compatibility issues and neither party knows what's up.
I'm having the same issue with my LG 55EC9300. The Nexus Player won't display anything on the TV screen (which just remains black). I've tried all the troubleshooting steps available on the Google support pages, including factory resetting the Nexus Player, and nothing has worked.
The TV does seem to recognize that a Nexus Player is attached because it says "Nexus Player" in the TV's input menu when it's connected via HDMI.
Please let me know what you hear.
I just ordered a NP, I got a LG 50LB5900 will test it out when it arrives, luckily I have two options a smart bluray with HDMI in, I hope this doesn't span all new LG units. This needs to get escalated properly and hopefully google will contact LG if it is their issue. I'd call google and escalate it and use this thread as a reference.
defconoi, I'll be anxious to hear your results. I tried pass-thru on my samsung stereo/dvd player. It picked up the audio just fine but the video still had the same problem. If I understand correctly, your LB5900 isn't SmartTV/WebOS, so hopefully you'll be unaffected.
Still doing email dialog with Google, if they can't offer something solid this week I may be asking for a refund on this thing.
I have same issue on an LB6300.
I've tried the Nexus player on a couple other TVs in the house and can confirm it works fine on them, but only a blank screen on the LB6300. I've tried the same troubleshooting steps, but no luck. Very disappointing, this was the TV I wanted to run the Nexus on.
I have that same problem on 42LB671V
black screen on 3 different hdmi cable
on the old tv Mirai it works ok.

My Samsung smart Blu-ray player has a HDMI input that the nexus player works with, it also supports more audio codecs than my LG TV, for now I got it connected via that until my optical cables come in. As a fix for this issue you guys could probably use a HDMI converter box or adapter, im not quite sure which one would work, but I'd do some googling. The Nexus player is awesome, if it didnt work on my TV i'd find a cheap solution.

I'm trying to think thru options here... what I'm looking for is to a device that can intercept the HDMI signal, decode it, and then re-encode it to HDMI again (HDMI is the only vialable input option on my TV)... Maybe 2 boxes, [hdmi -> composite] -> [composite -> hdmi]
Maybe I just need to figure out a way to access the composite input on my tv - it's obstructed by the mounting brackets.
Sympathies to you xgrey, but I'm glad to hear that more than one model is affected...
My 55LG just arrived today; out of the box my nexus player worked with it fine. I noticed at times i was getting some audio desyncing caused by the tv of all things but turning the tv off and on fixed it. Well I applied 2 updates and now I'm getting the same issue. This has to be sdome sort of LG or webos trying to block google. My chromecast is still showing up fine.
ya I got a LG tv with Webos an the Nexus player wont work on it just a black screen..WTF..My Roku 3 works just fine....

Anybody else having any luck?
Nexus player wont play on lg web os 70lb6560-ta
I have the same problem with my LG 70LB6560-TA. The Nexus Player plays on all other (3) TV's I have except the 70LB6560-TA(WEB OS). This has exactly the same problem that toturi writes where the screen flashes on for a second then goes off for a minute. I have tried several new cables and all the HDMI ports on the TV with no success. I have called LG but I get all the usual noob "Please check" questions.
Partial Success
Last Friday I picked up an HDMI->Composite adapter, I'm calling this a partial solution.
Good news it that it works, bad news is that I'm only getting 720p now rather than 1080. This is fine for things like Castle of Illusion, but I'm not sure I'm that excited for movies. (I've got to make the call this week on returning the whole thing and I'm really on the fence).
Also, WTF was LG thinking with the placement of the Power, Digital Audio, Ethernet, and Composite ports all positioned perpendicular to the screen and INSIDE THE FREAKING VESA MOUNTS??!?... Hacking thru the steel VESA mount to get at my Composite port wasn't real cool.
If anyone happens to see this thread before you've taken the plunge, I'd say skip the LG. Not sure if Samsung or Sony are better, but LG seems to be doing a lot a bone-headed things lately ...that reminds me that I need to write a rant about my LG refrigerator too.
Anyway, using the composite solution is one route that you may consider, but not a perfect solution. Hopefully Google can still out-smart whatever it is that LG did to break HDMI (can we get them de-certified for the right to label their TVs HDMI over this?!)

I'm trying to build a list, can you share your model number? Here's what I've captured so far:
70LB6560-TA
55LB7200
55lb6300
42LB671V
55EC9300
65LB6300
There's likely a common thread here of WebOS-TVs or if it wasn't deliberate, then a chipset that's just bad (and who knows what other devices might be impacted!)
