What exactly is the purpose of this thread?
Ok, I am not quite sure what threads like this one are for. Somebody posts a tweet, without releasing any details yet, and this thread just keeps growing with speculations by people without any technical insight or knowledge, knowing no details whatsoever of how it was done. What purpose does this serve? To fill up XDA? The rooting threads are full of "I have no idea but...", "I don't know if this has been mentioned, but...", "Thank you guys for your efforts..." etc. Only very few posts are actually useful.
How about we create a separate forum called
"G2 General Waffle"
and in there we will have a few threads like
1. "Thank you to all the developers, keep up the good work, I love you!"
2. "I don't know anything about rooting, but how about using the sudo Linux command that I have just learned about on the Ubuntu Wiki?"
3. "I have no desire to read anything, can somebody summarise thread X for me?"
4. "I would like to speculate how person X who tweeted 'I perm-rooted the G2!' did it.
etc.
This way we keep the threads in the relevant forums clean, useful and easy to follow.
I think it is no wonder that many developers work in small closed groups until the final result is achieved, because any collaboration on XDA has become almost impossible, since everyone thinks they can post anything they like on to any thread, no matter how Off-topic or useful it is.
I picked this thread to post this, because it is so useless already that it won't get any worse by my off-topic post, and I hope this thread will get deleted, until Paul finally posts the details of what he has done in a separate thread.
Don't be a douche. People are just excited about the news/development. Your post contributed nothing but complaining what makes u think it's diffrent than others.

This thread was so pleasant before Mr. Negative Nancy chimed in. If it is what it is, then it is indeed a development aspect of this phone.

I agree. And I did say it in my post. It's off-topic in this forum, and contributed exactly as much to the actual rooting process as the excitement posts. But there has to be some way to make people realise that threads like this are actually harmful, because people (like me) spend ages looking for something relevant, and mostly just read useless waffle. Whilst I am not currently working on this, if somebody is, then this browsing time is time that is lost, which is not in the interest of the community.
If people want to exchange excitement, why not post on twitter with the #g2root tag, or at least marking the thread clearly as off-topic/not relevant. Paul only posted on Twitter and not on XDA presumably for precisely this reason. If he posts something here, it is of actual value and has the relevant details in. People should take an example. It's not about flaming, it's about trying to make XDA more efficient.
This is the last I am going to say on this. It is not going to help anyway, I wonder why we keep trying...
Damn talk about being negative. Ha. We got a debbie downer here fellas.

Well I just wanted to day "Thank You" to all of the developers, themers, etc. It seems like lately people in this community are really sharing info without problem. Now, maybe that's always been the case but its being seen in the threads more. There have been some great ROMs, kernels, mods, themes, etc. coming out lately. It seemed like we hit a wall after Dk28 but now there seems to be something new and spectacular every day. Keep up the fantastic work and delivering on the greatness.
Now, on to those who post. Thanks to those who take the time to help answer questions, post a link, or even better a zip. I am sure it gets frusterating to the XDA All Stars when the Rookies don't know all the rules. Its easy to say go back and read but sometimes threads are 1000 pages and Search sends you all over the place. If you take the time to actually post the answer instead of posting to read the last 42 pages itss been said, it may actually help you. One day you may have a question ar be looking for a file or zip and instead of someone telling you to hit "Search", they may just post it for you right there. Not everyone knows every XDA forum rules...but everybody learns and I am sure XDA doesn't want people being chased off by someone snapping on/flaming them for not knowing a rule. It may be their 1st or 2nd time here.
In closing, I have noticed and overall better attitude/vibe among not only developers but those of us who just post as well. Things seemed to be dying for a little while and now there a great ROM, Theme, or Tweak on here every day or two. So, the future looks bright! Thanks to those who develop, theme, make mods, are testers and to the helpful question answerers. This is actually a pleasant forum to come to now. Of course the trolls are another story altogether.thanks for taking the time to read is, I just felt it was necessary. Too much hotness being released lately.

I understand completely, as I used to be very active on here, but do little more than lurk in the shadows these days. The people here are rude miscreants, the mods/admins are power tripping paedophiles living in there moms basements, and there is really nothing posted on here that cannot be done with a minor understanding of linux and java.
P.S. After what the mods did with Indirect, while supporting a scam artist, I feel confident of a ban. So, to the mod that bans me, I forgive you already, as I have worked hard to put myself in an excellent place in life, you have not, so I understand the anger. Look at this way, at least you and your mother will have a dinner topic to discuss (as opposed to the ususal conversations about the health of her favorite cats).

Just want to know what's the huge buzz about when it comes to cm7 and why its taking so long to finish. Right now I'm acs ics ei22 v3.5 rom and its great so far. But for some reason a lot of people are holding off and waiting for cm7. Just like to know what the big deal is. Other developers are dropping roms left and right and people are still waiting on cm7 I guess it must be something amazing.

It's stock AOSP, with some modifications.
Nothing special really, but it's the only way we'll ever see Ice Cream Sandwich.
You just wanted to know something that is well documented, so you start a new thread to ask, instead of reading? If you're too lazy to read the CM website and the existing Epic CM thread (mostly the website, though, for the feature list and such), then we're too lazy to hold your hand.

First, I apologize for other, more cynical, people lurking in these forums. I know that we grow tired of questions like these, but we were all newbies once and a lot of people just don't understand the concept of patience.
As someone who recently started using CM7 (past two months) I can say that, for me at least, I use it for the speed and simple nature of it. It isn't packed full of things that I don't need right out of the gate, which allows me to customize it as I see fit. First thing I did was install most of the GO applications and all the widgets/apps/games that I've paid for over the past year. On other firmwares I would be down to less than 40MB of space, but with CM7, I still have 299MB left without using the SD card at all for apps.
I'm sure I'll run EI22 for a little while once a stock tar is out, but CM7 has really proven itself to me.
As far as why CM7 is taking so long, the developers have lives of their own. They make no promises and release firmware of their own good will. I think that we're very lucky to have that. The internet and ever quicker releases of things has made us all impatient, what seems like ADHD. We want the next best thing, and we want it now. I suppose that I'm in that boat now too, unfortunately, but I strive not to bug developers who release software for free.

Great response. As far as that one guy I had to go in on I'm going say this if you agree with a post don't troll on it. Now back to you I just really got into rooting and trying roms thanks to xda I may never go back to a stock rom again. My current rom is pretty damn good I may say. I'm looking for a pernament rom to use until I get another phone. So when cm7 is done I may have to give that a test drive

Thanks for the support, guys - the problem with issues like this is that, in order to be able to follow the rules, one must be able to read them, and if he could do that then he could have read the answer to this same question without re posting it
And if you read his response, it kinda sounds like his frustration is sexual in nature...

Don't jump down my throat because you feel foolish for making an ass of yourself. You have two other XDA veterans telling you that the mistake was yours, and you start hurling poorly formed insults... way to prove their point by example
As for the part about saying to search instead of helping the thread... if you search, that is helping the thread. If we just answer the same question each time, it only further encourages people not to search, which hurts the thread. Don't accuse me of not helping until you're willing to do your part to help as well - we call that being a hypocritic

I've posted a similar thread on this topic a few months ago. I honestly just had no idea what was so special/unique with the Cyanogen project versus AOSP. I even did the research before asking. The information I found didn't really give me an idea of how different the two really are.
I did think styles420 was a bit out of line in his/her reply; however, your response (OP) was completely uncalled for. The OP definitely broke XDA rules of conduct in the reply.
To the OP:
CM About page
There are still some items not working 100%, and therefore it's not production ready yet. It will get there in time. Asking for ETA's of releases is usually frowned upon.
To styles420:
Member rules of conduct for XDA
10. Help others if you can.
If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do. This place exists because people are helping each other, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably already quite a few people newer than you that would benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.
You could have simply ignored this post or pointed the OP in the proper direction for information.

I'll admit, I could have been more helpful, but my defense is that it would only encourage him to keep breaking the primary rule to at least try to find the answers before posting. And I may be mistaken, but I think I've seen this guy do this before, so I was under the impression that he'd already used his newb card on this forum and has had the rules pointed out - if we get unlimited second chances, why bother to follow the rules in the first place?
EDIT: I got curious, so I checked - he started two new threads for old questions, one about Siri (search would have brought up Zanderman's Iris thread), and one about a gmail problem that I will admit was harder to find an answer to.
He also asked for an ETA in the EH17 based ACS ICS thread...
OP, just do a little more digging before starting new threads - you're putting your username on the front page of threads, drawing attention both good and bad. It's nothing personal, but if we make exceptions for you, we have to throw the rules out the window to make exceptions for everyone who breaks them.
And calm down with the foul language and childish insults - you'll get more help if you're at least polite when you make a newb mistake
So, truce?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Very well said, Nikon, you took what I wanted to say and packaged it up neatly and succinctly!
Yes, the OP should have done a bit more research on his own (he's obviously been on XDA a while and should know that's the norm), but I felt that Styles didn't help the situation at all--too often people around here get an elitist attitude toward ignorant folks. As I understand it, XDA is here to expand everyone's knowledge of our phones and therefore people should not explicitly state "Go figure it out." If you don't want to help them / hold their hand, fine, just don't post at all. Styles420, obviously you get tired of people asking redundant questions that they could have found the answer to--I get that. But I get tired of seeing all the smartass, elitist answers that do just as much to clutter up XDA as the ignorant posts.
To the OP: your response was way overboard. It's a free country, I can't tell you not to feel that way, nor can I tell you not to post such things. But I can tell you this: that type of offensive behavior on XDA is a surefire way to have sanctions brought against you. The mods around here don't put up with that sort of thing. I understand your frustration, but XDA is not the place to vent in such a childish, immature way.

This devolved rather quickly.
But to answer the op, CM7 is a highly customizable, low battery consumption version of the Android Open Source Project (ASOP) version of Android.
You have less "for-show" frills, such as Touchwiz and purely aesthetic additions on your stock rom. Battery life is much better and over all experience seems more upbeat from users.
And yes, that guy was trolling, but your response was highly inappropriate OP. Keep that to you and your friends, as in the public, it just questions your maturity.
Good luck and wishes in your future Android adventures.

Are you a moderator? No? Well leave the forum policing to those qualified, as your posts seem to show your ineptitude for such a task.
Have a nice day.

Fair enough Styles, I fully understand that sentiment! I agree that people should not be coddled, especially if they should know better--and with a post count of 250+, blackdragon79 obviously has been around the block at XDA. Maybe the middle ground between holding his hand and blowing him off is the best answer, such as linking to the information to help himself like Nikon did. You don't have to waste much effort, and it encourages him to "figure it out for himself," but at least gives him a push in the right direction.
Oh, and I realize I'm getting on my high horse with these two posts, so feel free to tell me to F*** off, LOL! I just feel compelled to act as a social mediator on here sometimes.
It was mentioned by @greogory that he wished MOAR had an off-topic thread so that the main MOAR threads (Development, Q&A/FAQ, and Themeing) would not get hijacked as we all tend to go off-topic frequently.
So, I thought, why not create it in the General Forum. Please continue to follow forum rules, primarily no vulgarity (masked or otherwise) and NO personal attacks against a person.
I've come to think of the MOAR community like family, so let me start off with a little background on me. Real name Rick, I'm 61 years young (as far as I know I'm the oldest RC on XDA). I retired from the US Navy in 1992 after serving for 21.5 years. From 1989-1991 I was the SysOp of a pretty popular BBS in San Diego, CA. (If you don't know those terms, then I "am" old!!) I've got a tech background in computer repair as well as doing tech support for Iomega (remember the Zip drive?) and AOL.
This forum is open to anyone, but let me put a shout-out to some of the regulars: @rompnit, @tdunham, @willowmaker420, @JoeyDuran, @chefbaker11, @elwood, @bytes2bits, @andee39.

*all together now* HI RICK!!! ?
Awww man! I wanted to start it lol
I had the perfect thread title:
[OFF-TOPIC][MOAR & MOAT Community Thread]
I was just making sure with all the forum rules and was hitting up the moderators to find out where the correct place would be to put it because I noticed that there is an official place for off topic thread in the main xda general section.
But you beat me to it lol ?
Thank you!
Tried to be FIRST, @JoeyDuran beat me to it lol
This is awesome @Ramer and @Gregory, what a great idea. I hope it gets utilized lol.
My real name is Jason. I'm 34, turning 35 next month. I'm a Chef, as most of you know already, and I just moved to Naples, FL. I've never worked in the tech industry. But I've been around the block for a while, so I wouldn't call myself a noob either. If I wasn't absolutely in love with what I do, then that's prolly the direction I'd head. I love all tech! Currently I have a GS5 sprint and a new Gear S watch. I've been on MOAR since the S3, I base my phones on that ROM, lol.
Come say hi guys!!!!

*all together now* HI JASON!!! ?
Sorry I stole first post
OK OK... I guess my intro...
Ahhmm... My real name is Joey... ?.... Shocking right lol. I go by Joseph, Joey, Joe... But everybody knows me by Joey.
I'm 21 going on 22 years old on may 10th (I'm probably the youngest here ?). I do boring warehouse work in the Houston TX area and wish I could find a better paying job.
I've always been into the techy stuff, my first Android phone was the Galaxy S3 and I was running Goodness from team nocturnal at the time. It was a great community and that's where my themeing journey started
Now I'm proud to be running MOAR and proud to be apart of Team Darksyde with the one and only @willowmaker420!
Love this community as everybody is helpful and fun to talk to!
So what happens if we get off topic in here?

Yep, even the black sheep of the family are welcome.
Thanks, but I honestly think that it would've even been a better idea to create a thread about toilets.

No hard feelings just my opinion.

Okay, well, I guess I'll join in here. Lol.
My real name is Seth, in 28, and I work in law enforcement, hence the profile photo. It's also the reason you won't see tons of posts by me because I don't always have the time to post or comment.
Ive been on Android since the HTC came out but I started in the custom ROMs with the S3 on Goodness by Team Nocturnal. After that I got the S4 and became part of the sac23 family where I had the pleasure of testing ROMs and themes. I've tried out different ROMs from time to time to see what was out there but always navigated back to sac. When I got the S5 I was disappointed that sac wasn't gonna be producing any real ROMs of his own for the phone as he's gotten so busy with other devices. However I have always run a ROM that he was a part of in development. Which has brought me over to the MOAR family. It's nice to see a lot of familiar faces from the sac23 ROM family here.
I'm an avid firearms enthusiast and gamer as well, when I have the spare time. Lol.

LOL, the zip drive!! I remember it and used it!!
Hi my name is Andrea and I'm ......... old. :silly: I live in NY and work for a city agency in lower Manhattan. I love love love MOAR!! I started out my journey with smartphones with an EPIC touch. Really enjoyed that phone, especially being able to use the slide out keyboard. Not a fan of virtual keyboards. Bought my rooted S3 on ebay. The guy I bought it from continued to give me updates from time to time and when I switched to S5, he helped me again for a bit but eventually he couldn't help anymore and I was left with a rooted phone and absolutely no idea of what I was doing. Thankfully I found help from some folks in another forum and learned all about rooting and flashing and doing things for myself. I tried a few different roms on my S3 and eventually found my way to MOAR and haven't looked back since. I agree wholeheartedly - our little community of MOAR users is like family!! A few black sheep but I guess every family has those!!
Hey @Ramer guy from overseas I believe created a interface cradle for the moto 360 and is selling for $40.
Only has a few left, I'm waiting for my funds to hit the bank so I can get one. Looks real nice and not crappy

$40 for $5 in parts is pretty steep..... However, can I borrow yours after your done?
Ok I'll go. Real name as Brian I'm 37 and I manage a retail store for a Sprint Preferred retailer. Prior to Sprint I spent a lot of time in the car business. My first android was the thunderbolt by htc and have been rooting ever since. I think we should start a support group for former zip drive users. I think I still have one somewhere. Too bad computers don't have parallel ports anymore.
