Deleted SMS messages reappear after reboot!! HELP!!! - HD2 General

For some reason there are two messages that will not stay deleted after a reboot. They have a memory card icon at the end, so I assume that they are on the memory card somewhere. Problem is, I have looked and looked without finding them. I can delete messages without the icon and they stay deleted as normal. Anyone know how or where I can find/delete them for good!?!?
PS. this message is from someone at work that the girlfriend cant stand so any ideas ASAP is appreciated!
Thanks in advance...

Has someone found a solution for this? I have 4125 messages in the Sent folder and I delete 8 of them for example, go to the Delete folder and delete the 8 messages there. It takes a little while for the phone to come back that I can do something on it cause it lags while its deleting, but if I do a soft reset or turn it off, the messages come back.
Could someone let me know the answer to find out if I have the messages to save to the sim card? I think I have it that way, but I cannot remember how I did it.
And if they are on the sim card, the cellphone keeps saying LOW MEMORY. I have uninstalled some games I had in there to make space. When I go to memory it shows for example like 3.50mb, but a couple of hours later, it drops to like .96mb, that's when I cannot receive pics, cause the memory is low.
Thanks

This can happen from time to time, I found it happens when I flash a rom and forget to remove the sim the card. I had to put my sim in an old razor that had the ability to delete the message from the sim card instead of moving and then deleting.

i had one on my sim that wouldnt go, i put the sim in a different phone (an old non smart phone) and deleted it from there.
oh, zelendel beat me to it, heh

Ok, lets find another phone and try that.
Thank you for that solution. Let's see what happens =D

Update: I didn't want to open another post, so I'm gonna update this one. Ok, this is the ONLY solution I have found that has worked. It has taken me lots of hours, performing different ways to get the messaged deleted, but they came back after a Soft Reset or Turn phone off. The solution works for me and I'm getting my messages DELETED from the Sent folder.
I found an option in the messages area. Inside Messages, go to Menu > Tools > Options. I selected Storage and where it says Empty deleted items change that from On Connect/Disconnect to Immediately.
Then I went to the Sent folder and found a message I had with an attachment about 530k, deleted it. I closed the Messages window, and click on Contacts to open the contacts window. It will not open because the phone its taking time deleting the message (do not try to close it, let it be), when the contacts shows up, the phone finished making the changes to the registry and deleting the message (if I'm wrong someone correct me).
After that I open Google Maps and let it find satellites for about 1 minute. I then open an application I have called Task Manager, go to Menu > Actions > Soft Reset. When the phone comes back up, and I go back to Sent Messages the message I deleted is GONE & it is not in Deleted Messages because you changed that option at the beginning.
I have deleted up to 10 at the same time, the more messages you delete, the longer the time you have to wait for the contacts to show up, but it has worked. I'm back to 13.49mb from 1.45mb. Couldn't even receive a message with an attachment.
Good luck =D

Unable to save media from MMS using RC33

A friend of mine sent me an MMS message with a picture as an attachment. I have RC33, so I go to the message and press the "Download" button to the right of the message. After, this, the button is replaced with the text "downloading", but nothing else happens. In addition, the media does not show up in the SaveMMS application. The message is only 74K, so there isn't any reason why it shouldn't download fairly quickly. Any suggestions?
Works for me....using the scroll ball...scroll to the message press the ball in for 2 seconds and a menu opens. Option to save to sd card is there.
When I press with the scroll button or do a long press, I am given the options "Call +(number here)", "View message details", and "Delete message".
Edit: Thought I would mention this - in the "Messaging" view (where all your text message threads are listed), there is a white/orange triangle with an ! inside it to the right of the thread that contains the message in question. I'm not sure what this means, but I thought that it might be helpful in solving the problem I am having.
open and click th whole message and u should receive option to save attachment.
To clear any confusion, here are images of what is going on:

Dude it really doesn't look like you have a picture in there. I already check this twice and if I got a message I pressed and hold a message(not a pic) and menu poped up with option to save attachement to sd. With press and hold a message w/o pic shows menu like you showedon screenshot
Here is mine...i sent a pic to myself works like it's suppose too.
Your phone knows it's been sent an image but it hasn't downloaded it yet. This has happened a few times on mine. Just click the "download" button and it should show up in the message, then you can save it.

This makes sense, but so far I'm stuck at the "downloading" part. It says that the message size is 74Kb - does it download MMS messages over wifi (which I am connected to) or T-Mobile's signal? I don't have a data plan with my phone, so perhaps the seemingly un-ending download time is due to the speed of T-Mobile's signal? I will try to download it again and see if it works.
This is based solely on a guess, but I have experienced a situation where MMS would not be downloaded if A) I was syncing with PC at the time or B) I was connected to WiFi.
This was NOT on the G1 but on one of my WinMo smart phones.
MMS is downloaded via TMo's mobile internet, but you normally not paying data charges, just messaging charges so it shouldn't be affected by the fact you don't have a data plan. You DO need the TMo APN settings tho I think.
This may not be the problem here, but it's possible if you've tried all other options.

Very good point daisy :")
Or perhaps he was playing with some settings messing them up. Just a thought
I think an mms can only be downloaded via the cellular line (wap,gprs,umts i.e.)
Had similar problems with my old o2 xda orbit....first had to make wap config.

I tried disconnecting from the wifi and it didn't work. However, I have never changed the APN settings for my phone. Are there instructions for doing this somewhere? So far voice + sms messages have worked fine, so I didn't realize that the APN settings might be a problem.
You all are correct about the APN settings. I tried sending myself an MMS as a test and it did not send. I read through the APN thread here without luck, but then found instructions here. After following the instructions, I was able to download the MMS message without any problems.
Glad that you solved it xxx

SMS Fail

I can't send SMS messages... All was working fine till about 15 minutes ago.
Every time i try to send a msg (tried diff numbers to test), it just says "sms failed" or something.
I can recieve SMS's and make phone calls.
This is really frustrating T_T
I wonder if any apps are the problem
However, the last thing I remember doing before it failed was testing out samsungs "Days" and "Feeds and Updates" widgets.
ps: I've tried rebooting a bunch of times, removing widgets etc.

I take it you have tried removing the battery?
As to reinstalling the App, have a look at this thread. It lists all the Apps on the Galaxy S.
If you can find the one you need (look at page 2 where a member has labelled them all) you may be able to sort it out by re-installing.
thanks for the help mate, unfortunately still no good.
I didn't remove any core apps, however i do have root.
Also, just factory reset the phone and still no good.
Im tempted to try flashing a new firmware...
I hope its not some problem with my provider or simcard.. that's hard to isolate though...

Have to say if you've factory reset then it does indeed point to the telco or card.
If you don't have another SIM card to hand why not take it down to your telco provider and ask them to slip one in and see if a different SIM card would work.
Either that or ask one of your mates if they could temporary let you use their card just to see if you can send messages from their account.
Good idea. I'll see if i can borrow someones simcard.
Also, I just flashed JFB firmware, and the situation is the same (sms not sending).

If it's still the same after flashing then yes, it points towards the SIM card.
Either that or your on a plan that restricts you sending when you go over your limit.
Wish you well finding another.
YAY FIXED!!!
I was googling it up and found some info on SMSC numbers for optus, however I couldn't figure out how to change the SMSC number on the phone.
Lucky when I called up optus customer support, it was super quickly resolved.
Messaging > Menu touch button > Settings > Message centre
Very happy, although I don't know how the problem occured in the first place... :S
(I understand that settings are erasing during firmware update, but I was using stock firmware when the problem started)

Help: Windows won't load; hoping not to hard-reset

Hey guys,
Winmo 6.1
Onyx ?? - don't know exactly which version of the ROM, from sometime in April/09 I think. Previous owner flashed it.
I was playing with the overclocking in HomeScreen++ and the phone got stuck (like it had many times before), but now it won't load windows. I get the white screen with HTC on it, then it stays on the black HTC screen, the one with smaller white HTC writing, and that's it, I never get to the green loading Windows Mobile 6.1 screen.
Tried soft resetting obv, taking out the battery, SIM card, SD card.
Good thing is, I can see all the folders through activesync when I connect it to the PC.
How can I recover it?? And worst case backup all my stuff (tasks, contacts, etc) IF I have to hard reset? (I know...I should have looked into backing up my stuff earlier).
I read the dead/bricked guide but I think this is unique as I'm trying to avoid a hard reset or flash.
How many times have you tried to boot? I think homescreen++ has a failsafe that after x amount of failed boots it kills the overclocking? It may be worth just hammering the resets?
If that doens't work, when I get home tonight I will try to kill one of my Elfs, what did you overclock too?

Well, it wasn't set to overclock after boot, and it isn't resetting by itself. It isn't even frozen really, you can turn the screen on and off, the backlight turns off after a minute, the touch screen will turn it back on if touched, activesync sees it, so it's a strange situation, it just stays at the second black HTC screen forever. I've tried to boot it lots of times, and when it first crashed, I overclocked to 299, something I had done before both successfully and unsuccessfuly, but always booted back just fine until now.
It may be of relevance, that WiFi was on when it crashed. Perhaps it can't initialize it anymore and gets stuck?
The trick to recovering it has to be by checking/repairing the windows files through activesync, but I don't know what to check or how to repair it.
You said you can see your files with AS. I'd suggest to sync contacts calendar etc, then copy everything you want from device to SD card. Launch Mobiler to see if it's a prob with lcd display. If you can, try to change the HS++ settings.

What is Mobiler? I think the LCD is fine, it goes from the white screen to the black screen (the one with the quick HTC animation). Also, if I call my phone, it's as if it's off, so it's not like it's actually loaded in the background but I can't see it. I don't understand how activesync is able to see it if WinMo hasn't loaded (never gets to the green screen).
Ahh, I really don't want to re-install all my programs and all my settings either (this would be true with a hard reset??)
http://www.mtux.com/
Well that didn't work, here's the screen it's stuck at, from MyMobiler:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
So it's not the lcd, you'll probably need to hard reset. Or if you can remove all the files connected to HS++ with active sync (in case they are the problem)
Will the hard reset bring me back to a clean Onyx ROM or to what the phone came with?
I'd really like to avoid having to reinstall all my programs and settings. Is there no way we can figure out at which part of the boot process it is stumbling and then fix the files that are potentially corrupt? How can I access the registry for example?

Try out CeRegEditor to access the pda's registry from your pc.
If it works, try disabling HS++ since you've told that this was the last thing you were tweaking.
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Today\Items\HomeScreen PlusPlus]
"Enabled"=dword:0

Thanks, I'll give it a shot, but I doubt HomeScreen++ is initialized so early in the boot sequence. And do you know what part of the boot sequence this is? Right before the green WinMob screen...
EDIT: Looks like the value was already 0 for "Enabled" and if I try changing it to 1, save, upon reboot, it is back at 0.
OK, so HS++ wasn't responsible.
Here is an idea..
Find with CeRegEditor this key:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init]
Post here what you see and lets hope we can find something useful.
PS:I think that a hard reset is also an unavoidable way to try fixing this.

Here it is, thanks.
Well, comparing those values with my device's I found nothing wrong.
I think you should just hard reset your pda.
This way you can also see if it is a hardware or a software issue.
I mean if it is a hardware issue, then the hard reset won't do no good.
But if it is a software issue, your phone will regain full functionality.
Regards!
Sigh...alright before I go ahead with that, I want to save as much of my settings as possible. So sync with Outlook (have to install outlook). That should take care of my contacts, emails, SMS? What about like contact pictures for Manilla, etc?
I will just copy the whole device folder to my PC I guess after I sync with outlook, also save the registry from CERegEditor.
Sync to Microsoft my phone keep your contacts pics and stuff if you're able too.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
So I copied over pim.vol and that contained all the call history, contacts, even the contact pictures. Lost my SMS, but that's fine.
Updated to Onyx based on WM 6.5.x and couldn't be happier! I was afraid to do this before because of the the warning that the battery won't last as long but it's been just fine, I don't think it's draining any faster than it was with 6.1.

[Q] Text messaging is slow and fc's!

Hello all i have a stock r800x the phone has ran great for the last month but over the last week it has become very slow. mainly in the messaging app the threads take forever to come up or it will fc from timing same for the keyboard when you attempt to text. I will hit a letter and it will just hang up and fc it is a nightmare to text on this phone as of late. i do not want to do a factory reset to try and fix the problem because i have a ton of gameloft games installed and would hate to lose the game saves. also getting games back from them is a pain in the ass.
any ideas what my problem is?

Try clearing data for the messages app in manage applications
my phone has doing the same thing just cleaned the data for it will see how it goes
as much as i'm concerned, i tried quite a lot of things, including clear cache n stuff, but turning of 'Sync' (automatic sync) does aid this...

I can confirm this. If your Txt message database gets too big (too many messages stored, and too many threads) it will get awfully sluggish and occassionaly give you the FC/wait/Report options. If you hit wait, it should come back, but may still be sluggish.
I suggest that you limit all threads to a max of 200 messages (preferably 50~100) and that you delete any threads you don't still need. You can use a SMS/MMS backup application (several don't need root) to back up all the data if you want to keep it in case of needing info out of it, or for archival/audit purposes.
Completely clearing the data from the app (not just cache) will reset the DBs and after the first open to reinitialize the DB, it should be snappy again.
This maintenance will need to be performed regularly if you don't go into the app's settings to enforce thread-length limits.

[Q] N4 settings menu won't open

Hi,
My Nexus 4 is running completely stock 4.2.2, it's not even unlocked let alone rooted (first phone I've felt happy enough without root) and was running fine until yesterday when it ran out of storage space and gave me a warning. So i uninstalled a couple of games, hoping to free up a couple of gigs.
Now though, i can't get to the settings menu or any associated screen. I can toggle the quick settings from the pull down menu, but if try to enter the main settings menu it briefly flashes up and then closes. It's the same if i try to access settings through the launcher, and if i try to get to any settings menu via other means (ie. long press an icon in Nova and select 'app info' or 'uninstall') the associated menu again just flashes up and then vanishes within a split second as if I've pressed back straight away.
Nothing else seems out of the ordinary - apps update, i can get to the play store, apps run fine, just the settings menu.
Any ideas? I can't find anything similar searching here or elsewhere. I've obviously rebooted the phone but without access to the settings i have no idea what else i can change. I'd factory reset but I've not backed up a couple of apps and usb debugging is off so i can't use Carbon (for some reason it's always had problems keeping the initial enabling and needs plugging in regularly),and i can't use Titanium without root so i wanted to see if anyone had any bright ideas first
Perhaps there's a way to just reset the settings menu? I've no idea what it's process is, but some action similar to "clear app data" should reset it :/ Just brainstorming here.
if nothing helps do a factory reset. your apps will come back automatically through the play store when you log in.you'll loose your highscores but most apps are cloud driven anyway,

Sorry for the OT but is that a genuine quote in your sig?!
Anyway @OP I think factory resetting is probably your only viable solution here, it's a very odd issue and there's not much you can do to solve it without a settings menu.
You need to clear the data for settings. Install titanium backup and see if you can. You'll need to root it first though. Crap..I forgot forgot you said you arnt rooted.

Cheers for the suggestions, was hoping there would be a fix but I guess a factory reset in the morning it is.
Frustrating as this sort of thing really shouldn't be happening out of the blue from a stock phone - it's a fairly huge bug!
Ironic that I resisted rooting to ensure I kept the reliable and simple experience of the nexus, only for it to be what stopped me fixing it when it broke :-\
Won't make that mistake again!
This probably won't work but try opening your quick toggles then long pressing on wifi or bluetooth, that's supposed to take you to those individual settings. Then if you hit the icon in the top left you may be able to get back to the main settings.

Nope, sadly does the same thing - the settings menu briefly flashes open before closing.

Hey OP, did you figure it out yet? I just noticed that trebuchet launcher allows you to go into settings via a shortcut in the app launcher. Probably won't work, but hey. Try another launcher?
Yes cheers a factory reset wasn't needed in the end - I worked out the problem.
I've been using my sim with my n4 as well as my new HTC one and hot swapping between the two for a week or so. I also have avast installed on the n4 which has an option 'disable settings when no sim inserted' which I'd forgotten about.
I only thought of it because when I initially took the sim out I got an email saying 'warning unauthorised sim inserted, id: {null}' or similar.
It didn't work with my sim installed either but I logged into avast, turned that setting off and everything was back to normal. Turned the setting back on now (once the sim was in) as it's obviously going to be an absolute pain for thieves too!
I guess it's a problem with hot swapping the sim while avast was running, the switch didn't get triggered even when I reinserted it? Either way now it just means I turn the n4 off before removing the sim now!

Haha, at least you now experienced first hand how secure your settings menu is. :laugh:
Exactly what I was thinking! Nice it gave no clue why it was happening and if I didn't know the password for avast it would have made life very difficult as it also disabled usb debugging, so anyone who wanted to wipe the phone would have needed some serious android knowledge.
