Hey guys,
Winmo 6.1
Onyx ?? - don't know exactly which version of the ROM, from sometime in April/09 I think. Previous owner flashed it.
I was playing with the overclocking in HomeScreen++ and the phone got stuck (like it had many times before), but now it won't load windows. I get the white screen with HTC on it, then it stays on the black HTC screen, the one with smaller white HTC writing, and that's it, I never get to the green loading Windows Mobile 6.1 screen.
Tried soft resetting obv, taking out the battery, SIM card, SD card.
Good thing is, I can see all the folders through activesync when I connect it to the PC.
How can I recover it?? And worst case backup all my stuff (tasks, contacts, etc) IF I have to hard reset? (I know...I should have looked into backing up my stuff earlier).
I read the dead/bricked guide but I think this is unique as I'm trying to avoid a hard reset or flash.
How many times have you tried to boot? I think homescreen++ has a failsafe that after x amount of failed boots it kills the overclocking? It may be worth just hammering the resets?
If that doens't work, when I get home tonight I will try to kill one of my Elfs, what did you overclock too?

Well, it wasn't set to overclock after boot, and it isn't resetting by itself. It isn't even frozen really, you can turn the screen on and off, the backlight turns off after a minute, the touch screen will turn it back on if touched, activesync sees it, so it's a strange situation, it just stays at the second black HTC screen forever. I've tried to boot it lots of times, and when it first crashed, I overclocked to 299, something I had done before both successfully and unsuccessfuly, but always booted back just fine until now.
It may be of relevance, that WiFi was on when it crashed. Perhaps it can't initialize it anymore and gets stuck?
The trick to recovering it has to be by checking/repairing the windows files through activesync, but I don't know what to check or how to repair it.
You said you can see your files with AS. I'd suggest to sync contacts calendar etc, then copy everything you want from device to SD card. Launch Mobiler to see if it's a prob with lcd display. If you can, try to change the HS++ settings.

What is Mobiler? I think the LCD is fine, it goes from the white screen to the black screen (the one with the quick HTC animation). Also, if I call my phone, it's as if it's off, so it's not like it's actually loaded in the background but I can't see it. I don't understand how activesync is able to see it if WinMo hasn't loaded (never gets to the green screen).
Ahh, I really don't want to re-install all my programs and all my settings either (this would be true with a hard reset??)
http://www.mtux.com/
Well that didn't work, here's the screen it's stuck at, from MyMobiler:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
So it's not the lcd, you'll probably need to hard reset. Or if you can remove all the files connected to HS++ with active sync (in case they are the problem)
Will the hard reset bring me back to a clean Onyx ROM or to what the phone came with?
I'd really like to avoid having to reinstall all my programs and settings. Is there no way we can figure out at which part of the boot process it is stumbling and then fix the files that are potentially corrupt? How can I access the registry for example?

Try out CeRegEditor to access the pda's registry from your pc.
If it works, try disabling HS++ since you've told that this was the last thing you were tweaking.
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Today\Items\HomeScreen PlusPlus]
"Enabled"=dword:0

Thanks, I'll give it a shot, but I doubt HomeScreen++ is initialized so early in the boot sequence. And do you know what part of the boot sequence this is? Right before the green WinMob screen...
EDIT: Looks like the value was already 0 for "Enabled" and if I try changing it to 1, save, upon reboot, it is back at 0.
OK, so HS++ wasn't responsible.
Here is an idea..
Find with CeRegEditor this key:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init]
Post here what you see and lets hope we can find something useful.
PS:I think that a hard reset is also an unavoidable way to try fixing this.

Here it is, thanks.
Well, comparing those values with my device's I found nothing wrong.
I think you should just hard reset your pda.
This way you can also see if it is a hardware or a software issue.
I mean if it is a hardware issue, then the hard reset won't do no good.
But if it is a software issue, your phone will regain full functionality.
Regards!
Sigh...alright before I go ahead with that, I want to save as much of my settings as possible. So sync with Outlook (have to install outlook). That should take care of my contacts, emails, SMS? What about like contact pictures for Manilla, etc?
I will just copy the whole device folder to my PC I guess after I sync with outlook, also save the registry from CERegEditor.
Sync to Microsoft my phone keep your contacts pics and stuff if you're able too.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
So I copied over pim.vol and that contained all the call history, contacts, even the contact pictures. Lost my SMS, but that's fine.
Updated to Onyx based on WM 6.5.x and couldn't be happier! I was afraid to do this before because of the the warning that the battery won't last as long but it's been just fine, I don't think it's draining any faster than it was with 6.1.

its slow receiving calls, doing everything, looks every day more slower
the only software iam using is SPRITE BACKUP, SPRITE POCKET MON and SPRITE DETECTIVE... TCPMP Core Pocket Media Player ...
but the worst, is when i use the s100 keypad (near the awnsering key, that allows to scrool up and down the menus in today screen) when i scrool down or up, like, i want to see my ACTIVE TASK without using the PEN, i push down twice, and "shadow" just like in the picture apears from nowere, look: (its the white bar over the ACTIVE TASK menu)
why does this happens???
thanks for reading my post, and i hope someone can help me! :?
did you reset it?
it might be slowing down because it doesn't close application
it really just minimizes it so you might want to find an application that acts as a close button
just search for it since there are many and some are free (your list of programs doesn't include a closer that's why i'm suggesting it)
a temporary solution is goto settings -> memory -> running programs (tab) and close things you aren't using
the white bar i'm not sure of, but try resetting and if that doesn't work, then change the today theme
if that doesn't work then you might want to backup and do a hardreset
While checking the running programs, take a look at the first memory tab too. Is there enough memory left before & after closing the running apps? & definitely check this tab right after a soft-reset & see how much memory is available then, if it's less then, let's say, 10MB you need to free up your memory by installing stuff to SD instead of 'default location' (which means the same RAM memory as your programs will use to run in)
M
BTW VJOkButt is a nice & small closer. PHM powertoys is useful too.
thanks for the replys...
but still got the same problems, i soft reset, i hard reset, and still runs very slow, and still show that white bar on the today functions, when iam scrolling over them....
some times when i press the call button on the today screen, i have to wait 5 or 6 seconds to show the dialer keypad...
please help!!! maybe the ROM? maybe the phone is broken? pleasy help me!

When it's the same after a hard-reset & not installing any software, you're device might be the problem. Try upgrading then for a last chance or returning your device.
M
Maybe you were used to another cell phone which was much faster than s100 and now you find it slow?
For how long are you s100 user? Was it slow like this from the first day or it deteriorated day by day?
its deriorating day by day
i use the s100 about 8 months
i cant do the upgrade because of warranty, unless i know a way to do it without having any risks!

Does the white shadow just stay there in one place, over the task plugin?
When you go down once more, does the white shadow highlight the calendar plugin etc? Or is it just stuck there, even when you press dpad down again?

You say that you're using "Sprite Backup, Sprite Pocket Mon And Sprite Detective...". After you hard reset, are you restoring your backup using Sprite backup? Or are you finding this white bar on active task immediately after a full hard reset?
So you are finding that when you hard reset, align screen, today screen appears, press dpad and the white bar is stuck there?
V
yes when it goes down it stays over the calendar plugin, or over the owner plugin... if i click with the pointer in another positions, it does not desapear, only desapears if i click start then programs the "X" (close) or open another program and then return to today screen,
Have you tried what happens after a hard-reset without any additional software installed & without restoring your backup yet.
M
yes, appens the same stuff without installing anything and without restoring anything
You can try to solve it with another rom via
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=MagicianRomUpgrade
&
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Magician
But I think you'd better return it on warranty if available.

Ok, my wizard is running at stock speeds (no overclocking) cause i am currently trying to get it running as I want it to before I start trying to overclock the nuts off it. Problem I have is that after a while it starts running like a dog and no matter what processes I kill it will just not get back to its post soft-reset sprightly nature.
In my startup folder I have
CapNotify
CheckAutoRun
GPRSNotify (which is somehting to do with SPB GPRS monitor I think)
sddaemon (smart dial daemon from what I read on these forums
Services
I have already disabled
Init_tray
poutlook
Theme refresh (which kept changing my desktop back, grrr)
WifiInit
Has anyone got any idea what makes it run so slowly?
Anyone know how to stop pMSNServer from running itself in the background all the sodding time?
Or how to stop ActiveSync loading in the background when it has been nowhere near a USB cable?
Anyone know how to get programs to actually close when you hit the [X] and not have to use task manager to kill the process? (Free options appreciated, I didnt really like pocket plus).
Cheers for any help you can offer.

An easy way is to install mokski's two tweak cabs.
As for the x closing apps you can use wclose which I posted here I also use smartskey, a quite necessary lil app!
Hope I was of some help.
Cheers. Just disabled the file system cache (which I dont remember enabling) and will see how it works. If it doesn't work, I shall be re-enabling it and boosting the amount available.
Also disabled the phone skin. Does this work on a wizard? Or is it's running slightly faster the fact that I have just restarted? Or maybe it's just my imagination?
Thanks for wclose, should make life a little easier. Shall look into smartskey afterwards.

Ditto. Seems to be tied into Poutlook, so as long as I dont read my SMS messages it seems to be ok.
And disabling the skin on the phone app seems to have been the biggest improvement so far.....

Activesync fix
In Active Sync on your device, go to menu-Configure server. Then put in a fake server address and leave all other settings as they are. tap next untill you come to the screen that asks which items you want to sync. uncheck all checkboxes that indicate which items are synced with the Exchange Server and finish the configuration. Then go to menu-schedule and set the sync options both to manual. Now Active Sync will not start automatically to try to make contact with an Exchange Server, which is the cause of the problem.
How do you mean 'disable phone skin' ? and what is the visual effect?
I have a tmobile mda, and when I did disable phone skin it got rid of this ugly pink dial pad when I would try to use the phone as a phone. It also disabled smart dial which was good because smart dial would call people when i was already on the phone because my ear would accidentally push buttons.

i got this -
Remove operator skin from Phone app
If your device's Phone app is skinned, you can remove by setting:
HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin\Enabled = 0 (DWORD decimal)
Similarly, you can restore it with:
HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin\Enabled = 1 (DWORD decimal)
Click to collapse
And as bendog says, it removes the autodial features so whenever you push a button it doesnt go through your phone book trying to match a number (which is REALLY annoying when you are trying to use the "Press 1 to buy a ticket" style systems).
Otherwise, it is still kind of blue, just a LOT less laggy.
Phone still seems to end up running like a bit slow though (dont know if that is just a general slow down due to disabling the file system cache) despite me having over 20Mb of Program memory free still. Killing pMSNServer and poutlook when they are running in the background helps.
Current background tasks are....
connmgr* - This and cprog do the actual phone bit, dont think you should want to kill them.
cprog* - Phone GUI maybe?
device*
filesys**
GPRSNotify - SPB GPRSMonitor software related
gwes**
mstli*
NK*
sddaemon*
services*
shell32*
srvtrust*
Things with a * are in /windows. All are .exe files. Those with a ** are .exe files in /windows with a .exe.0409 file also present... no idea what those are.
Also, poutlook and pmsnserver are in windows and are not "required", so seems I cant use that as a test of whether the process is "required"/"preferred".
I think my problem with the blasted pmsnserver stems from me using my hotmail msn account to log into MSN messenger (which promptly downloaded the hotmail into poutlook). Am gonna have to change my msn account to a new MSN address and see if I can remove the hotmail folder.... am sure I have seen a thread on it on here somewhere....
/me finds option to download hotmail automatically..... and disables it
Hmmmm... maybe that will solve that problem.
I use smartskey as well - a beaut of an app, very usefull.
If you want to determine what is consuming the most memory, you could try to install ITaskMgr, which shows CPU Load, Memory Load, and running tasks and processes as well as how much memory they consume each.
Very handy to spot those applications that consume a lot or have memory leaks the longer they are used.
http://www.iaccarino.de/silvio/ppcstuff.htm
I whipped up a little MortScript package with installer to let you easily set a custom operator name and the interval in which the script will check to make sure your operator name is set. It's a two-part MortScript, opmon is the config GUI and opset is the background process which will run on first load and at system startup to ensure your custom name "sticks".
Installation & Usage
1. Download the zip file below and extract the CAB installer.
2. Run the CAB on your device to install.
3. Launch the config GUI by going to Start -> Programs -> OpMon.
4. Set your name and delay, then exit to apply the changes.
This has only been tested on my Mogul, but there is nothing device specific in the script, so it should work on almost any phone.
As always, suggestions are welcome and I hope you like it!

Don't know why that's happening. Do you have a task manager? If you do could you check to see if opset.exe is running in the background?
It's also possible that your delay is set too high. If something changes your custom name back to default, it will stay like that until the opset program checks at the specified interval.

Love the program.....but.......
I have the delay set to 90 seconds yet it seems to take up to 5 minutes for it to change from default (UMTS 3) to my setting. AS it changes back every time the screen goes to sleep it is a bit of a pain.
Am I doing anything wrong?

Which is..some kind a problem for me. I've been trying to uninstall OpMon, but had some funny problems. The lowdown:
1. Install in Device, works but opr. name keeps reverting back.
2. Decide to uninstall from Remove Programs, but says that it cannot be removed.
and "emunutz OpMon" remains on the remove programs list and on device.
3. Tried uninstalling with MemMaid, mentions that there is an error but I force uninstalled. Files & regs are gone (I think..) but OpMon still remain on the list!
Help?

That's WM6 running on there, with what looks like the HTC Cube. Check out the Wizard Mobile 6 forum for more info on running WM6 on yours.
Nope...
Hey Sam,
I just checked... This is not the cube. It's some other type of plugin and I just can't figure out which.
By the way, would you use this one or actually go with touchflo? I know it might be one big step up, but there's just something about too much "touching of the screen" that bothers me quite a bit...
Phil
Looks like the HTC Touchflo/cube, HTC home, HTC Audio Manager and some SPB thing (either mobile shell or pocketplus)?
tell me more...
Hey Draw,
I thought so too at first. But then I figured it's something else. So if it's not the cube or the touchflo, what can it be?
Damn, I'd really like to upgrade my 8125 to the best software. Aside from this one, which do you think is the best?
Phil
A lot, if not all, of what you see there can be mimicked with a combination of the following apps:
rlToday, see also their forums for many skin examples, and how to use this and the other two items i'll mention here...
mortscripts
sys2reg
While rlToday isn't being updated any more, the utilization of mortscripts led to the creation of sys2reg, which is essentially an entire library of mortscripts. Mortscripts can be called from within rlToday like any other program. Some people throw in Vijay555's tools as well... The mortscript library is capable of mimicking a lot of the dynamic information display seen in HTC's more interesting interfaces, as well as a lot of the stuff being done in the iPhone's home screen. Mimicking harder things like the animation associated with the touchflow cube is much harder, but I'm sure someone has made it work...
About touchflo...
Alright Myr,
This is where you might be able to help me out...
I decided to install touchflo on my wizard. I upgraded it and the rom to WM6 with IPL/SPL 2.26. I got the Touflo RUU G4 version and tried to install...
Unfortunately, it's giving me what I call the screen of death. That screen that has multicolored band and is a frozen image. I have to then pull the battery out and restart it. It then goes back to wm6.
I've erased all the extra programs on the phone, the htc home plugin, the 6 button plug-in and even the battery status plugin. Still a problem.
Now what do I do? By the way, I tried to install all the stuiff you mention in the last post, bu they sort of all failed... Now I'm focussing on Touchflo.

Sorry, Phil. That's where you lost me. I'm still running my stock WM5, and only recently bothered unlocking the SPL so I can upgrade if something really tickles my fancy. To be honest (and to be consistent in my comments) I probably won't update to WM6, but I wanted the option, just in case. In your case, that's the change I would suspect the most. Try going back to your stock OS.
I run HTC Home on my wm5, and only had to sacrifice the weather page (I use a much preferred Mortplayer for music, and so didn't even count turning off the audio manager tab as a loss). With a shortcut in the app launcher to weather watcher, I only added one tap to getting my weather report, so "who cares?"
Just to illustrate my point about not needing to upgrade...here's my screen, with the four tabs I left active...
(I goofed one of the tabs, the app launcher...will fix later, or not at all)
very cool!
Hey Myr,
How'd you do that??? By the way, being the persistent person I am; I finally got touchflo working on my wm6 phone. It's weird that it needed was to hold the USB button (left softkey) on the phone during the screen of death... And then it proceeds to activate the installation. Don't ask, I just lucked that one!
Anyways, is that screen touchflo? Or it that 6-button htc home plugin? I had to sacrifice my battery status plugin... It seems to give me problems everytime I installed it on touchflo; any idea why?

It's the HTC Home plugin, but I've modified it using the HTC Home Customizer from pocketemu.com to only have 4 buttons, and to change the appearance a bit.
Below that is rlToday, a programmable UI that's running some neat tricks. For example, I can tap the antenna and toggle wifi, and tap the BT symbol to toggle that. Below that is just the stock appointment plugin.
BTW, there are some that have modified rlToday to act and look like the HTC Home plugin. It's a bit slower than the actual one, because it's reloading the home screen, but it's effective in WM5. The actual Home plugin works much faster though.
Thanx for the info...
Hey Myr.
Thanks a lot for the info. But I'm not going to try to add anything to my phone as of yet. Not until I can solve the calnot.exe / clocknot.exe / reg??? problem.
Simple, it's driving me nuts! It actually invades my screen, sometimes freezes my phone... I've hard reset my phone twice, reinstalled the touchflo / cube software and ried several patches. No luck... Do you know what can be done to remedy this problem?
Phil
Nope, sorry. Try searching these forums, especially the WM6 forum for Wizard. If no love, post your error messages/symptoms there (this is a generic wizard forum, and you've loaded wm6, so you really need to ask people who've done what you've done).
I saw this idea in another thread that I don't currently remember, and I thought I could do it.
Kontoor fades out the screen, suspends the device, and when it is resumed, the screen comes in fading.
The zipped EXE file is attached below. You're supposed to place it somewhere into internal memory and put a shortcut to it to \Windows and name it "Short_Power.lnk", but it doesn't work on my device and Kontoor doesn't run. I'm seeking help for that! Many thanks.
Note that the attached EXE file is a test version.
Also, note that there may be other problems or improveable areas:
- starting the program 2 times will most probably wreck havoc (or pressing the power button 2 times , if it works for you)
- most probably, will not work when in games and other framebuffer-apps
- taskbar changes to "Start" before fading, if nothing changes it's better
- sluggish PDA's (like the HTC Universal I have) may experience added slowdown during resume
- ****ty PDA's (like the HTC Universal ) flash a brief white screen when resuming... it's a bit anti-aesthetic, and I can't control that
many thanks for you audience
yeah..it was requested by nesty24...thanks
wtf... i post something here, hoping it'll get some attention, and the only attention I get is the spam's
I tried it on my Prophet and Kaiser on prophet it does nothing at all. on kaiser it fades out nicely and I like it but when I press to turn screen on it fades out again. having real dificulties turning my screen back on. but the fading looks cool and now I have a reason to flash my next test rom
The exe works fine on my Sprint Vogue. I don't have a Short_Power.lnk in my Windows dir so when I copied it over, it did nothing. Any other way to set this app to run when the power button is pressed?

NOW, Slide UP to DOWN >>> POWER its OFF with Screen Fade on Suspend. Super PRO
Sorry for my English
You guys probably haven't heard of SuspendFX havent you?
Not all devices use the "short_power.lnk" method. I think newer devices like the Kaiser do, but older devices such as the universal and the Prophet have a different method. I shall look into the registry and see if it links from there.

It costs money is the problem ! However in this case it is such a showstopping program, and if remember very cheap, then I agree with you.... Give him some money and enjoy !(My kids keep asking me to switch on/off my PDA since I bought it !)

hmmm. it is somehow like that, but not fading, i mean, maybe fading maybe a feature, but it's not the real function. The idea was on the backlight, when you didn't touch your device (it is power on) for a several seconds, it fades out or dims and get to normal when you touches it again.
Battery Drain?
I try this on my HTC Touch Cruise. It works perfect, but i think my battery is draining faster. Anyone else who had the some problem?
I think it goes not in really standby mode and the screen is only going blank.
I will test it over night again.

Maybe a mortscript could be written that detects any kind of usage (or lack of usage) and then executes this program after a set time.

That could be done, but I don't think it would work just right on every PDA... most PDA have different screen backlight settings, some have more light steps, some only 3 settings.... and I think it would stress the light hardware....

you're right, the app just turns off the screen but doesn't go on standby mode right away, however, it should still go on automatic standby mode (after 30 seconds for me) if you have configured it on your power settings
if you are using spb mobile shell and have configured to show Now screen when device wakes up, you'll notice if you use this app to turn off the screen and you press power button to wake up your device right away, spb gives a sign that it didn't came from standby mode, it shows the last screen you've left.. just my observation, i could be wrong though
