A friend of mine sent me an MMS message with a picture as an attachment. I have RC33, so I go to the message and press the "Download" button to the right of the message. After, this, the button is replaced with the text "downloading", but nothing else happens. In addition, the media does not show up in the SaveMMS application. The message is only 74K, so there isn't any reason why it shouldn't download fairly quickly. Any suggestions?
Works for me....using the scroll ball...scroll to the message press the ball in for 2 seconds and a menu opens. Option to save to sd card is there.
When I press with the scroll button or do a long press, I am given the options "Call +(number here)", "View message details", and "Delete message".
Edit: Thought I would mention this - in the "Messaging" view (where all your text message threads are listed), there is a white/orange triangle with an ! inside it to the right of the thread that contains the message in question. I'm not sure what this means, but I thought that it might be helpful in solving the problem I am having.
open and click th whole message and u should receive option to save attachment.
To clear any confusion, here are images of what is going on:

Dude it really doesn't look like you have a picture in there. I already check this twice and if I got a message I pressed and hold a message(not a pic) and menu poped up with option to save attachement to sd. With press and hold a message w/o pic shows menu like you showedon screenshot
Here is mine...i sent a pic to myself works like it's suppose too.
Your phone knows it's been sent an image but it hasn't downloaded it yet. This has happened a few times on mine. Just click the "download" button and it should show up in the message, then you can save it.

This makes sense, but so far I'm stuck at the "downloading" part. It says that the message size is 74Kb - does it download MMS messages over wifi (which I am connected to) or T-Mobile's signal? I don't have a data plan with my phone, so perhaps the seemingly un-ending download time is due to the speed of T-Mobile's signal? I will try to download it again and see if it works.
This is based solely on a guess, but I have experienced a situation where MMS would not be downloaded if A) I was syncing with PC at the time or B) I was connected to WiFi.
This was NOT on the G1 but on one of my WinMo smart phones.
MMS is downloaded via TMo's mobile internet, but you normally not paying data charges, just messaging charges so it shouldn't be affected by the fact you don't have a data plan. You DO need the TMo APN settings tho I think.
This may not be the problem here, but it's possible if you've tried all other options.

Very good point daisy :")
Or perhaps he was playing with some settings messing them up. Just a thought
I think an mms can only be downloaded via the cellular line (wap, gprs, umts i.e.)
Had similar problems with my old o2 xda orbit....first had to make wap config.
Greetings
Carter

I tried disconnecting from the wifi and it didn't work. However, I have never changed the APN settings for my phone. Are there instructions for doing this somewhere? So far voice + sms messages have worked fine, so I didn't realize that the APN settings might be a problem.
You all are correct about the APN settings. I tried sending myself an MMS as a test and it did not send. I read through the APN thread here without luck, but then found instructions here. After following the instructions, I was able to download the MMS message without any problems.
Glad that you solved it xxx

I can't send SMS messages... All was working fine till about 15 minutes ago.
Every time i try to send a msg (tried diff numbers to test), it just says "sms failed" or something.
I can recieve SMS's and make phone calls.
This is really frustrating T_T
I wonder if any apps are the problem
However, the last thing I remember doing before it failed was testing out samsungs "Days" and "Feeds and Updates" widgets.
ps: I've tried rebooting a bunch of times, removing widgets etc.

I take it you have tried removing the battery?
As to reinstalling the App, have a look at this thread. It lists all the Apps on the Galaxy S.
If you can find the one you need (look at page 2 where a member has labelled them all) you may be able to sort it out by re-installing.
thanks for the help mate, unfortunately still no good.
I didn't remove any core apps, however i do have root.
Also, just factory reset the phone and still no good.
Im tempted to try flashing a new firmware...
I hope its not some problem with my provider or simcard.. that's hard to isolate though...

Have to say if you've factory reset then it does indeed point to the telco or card.
If you don't have another SIM card to hand why not take it down to your telco provider and ask them to slip one in and see if a different SIM card would work.
Either that or ask one of your mates if they could temporary let you use their card just to see if you can send messages from their account.
Good idea. I'll see if i can borrow someones simcard.
Also, I just flashed JFB firmware, and the situation is the same (sms not sending).

If it's still the same after flashing then yes, it points towards the SIM card.
Either that or your on a plan that restricts you sending when you go over your limit.
Wish you well finding another.
YAY FIXED!!!
I was googling it up and found some info on SMSC numbers for optus, however I couldn't figure out how to change the SMSC number on the phone.
Lucky when I called up optus customer support, it was super quickly resolved.
Messaging > Menu touch button > Settings > Message centre
Very happy, although I don't know how the problem occured in the first place... :S
(I understand that settings are erasing during firmware update, but I was using stock firmware when the problem started)

Hi All,
This guide is intended to help those of you suffering from data connection issues while using GPS. For example, when GPS is enabled and Google Maps is launched the network connection disconnects from 3G/HSPA and the network connection icon turns grey. Anyways, give this a shot and see if it helps. I have tested it out on my Nexus One using AT&T and it has fixed the issue for me. Also, you don't need to worry about screwing up your phone following this process as you can simply reset the APNs to default without issue :good:
Navigate to APN Settings
Navigate to System Settings > More (under Wireless & Networks) > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names. You should see something similar to this screenshot. If you have previously altered your APNs you should select the "Reset to default" option (this can take a while to complete so be patient!)

Remove unneeded APNs
You only need one APN listed. Since the N1 doesn't have LTE and I don't have StraightTalk I can remove these APNs. Simply click on each of the APNs to be remove and select the "Delete APN" option
Click to collapse
Configure your APN
Select the remaining APN and scroll down to "APN type". You need to change this value from whatever it is currently (in my case it reads "default, supl, mms") to "default, mms" (without quotes!). Select the "Save" option, back out of the settings menu and power off yor phone. DO NOT RESTART, YOU MUST POWER OFF your phone or this might not work! Don't worry if your connection icon turns grey (as shown in the screenshot) as this will be blue after you power on.
Click to collapse
Test it out
Navigate to System Settings > Location Access. If prompted about "Location consent" click "Agree". Wait a few seconds and then launch Google Maps. Confirm that the data connection is not lost by watching the network connection icon. If the icon remains blue with the letter "H" or "E" next to it then you're good! If it didn't work or made things worse you can simply select the "Reset to default" option from the APN Settings (again, this can take a while to complete so be patient!)

[UPDATE2]
darkshino has pointed out this may break mms. I have update the guide to set the APN type ase "default, mms" as this seems to fix mms and doesn't break GPS/Maps. Also found that powering off rather that rebooting is better (rebooting didn't work when I tried).

I believe I was the first to post this fix way back in October.

It is very likely you were the origin of this; in which case I thank you! I will update the OP to give credit where it is due. I hope you understand I'm not trying to take credit for your contribution, I'm just trying to help out others. Also, I was unable to get GPS working by setting the APN to "default" alone. I had to remove the extra APNs to get GPS working (which is not mentioned in your post).
In fairness, I got the idea to remove the extra APNs from a post I came across in the texasice development thread. I can't remember who initially suggested it so if anyone else out there thinks it may have been their suggestion please let me know and I will gladly give credit where credit is due.
No worries. Its a nice guide :highfive:
Updated the guide to include a fix for mms. Thanks to darkshino for bringing this to my attention.
Anyone have problems receiving pictures? I'm having a weird problem. I'm using stock messaging app.. Looks like I can send pictures, but have trouble receiving them. In fact, a few times I didn't receive an MMS until I actually sent an MMS back. So I would send a picture and then immediately receive one once I sent mine. Except the one I just received was sent a day earlier. Another time I didn't get one until a few days later. I replied and my friend didn't know what the hell I was talking about.
Only started having this problem on my nexus 4. Everything seemed fine when I was on my old gnex a couple weeks ago. So is it a phone, tmobile or software problem? Anyone have similar issues?

search around here for the proper apn settings. that will fix you up.
Well wouldn't it already be proper apn settings when I inserted my SIM card?
I am having the EXACT same issue. I tried contacting T-Mobile support about they just "reset" my device on the network. It seems to work better now, but I can usually see when someone tries to send me a message. If it doesn't receive, I just send myself a picture and I'll get whatever was sent to me. However I attributed this mostly to being on 2G at home.
How good of signal are you getting and is it 2/3/4G?

nope. i am on att and just fixed a couple people in a dif thread an hour ago. this is your issue. i just dont have the t-mobile apn settings to help you further.
Do as follows and it might help you:
1. Go Settings - Apps - All.
2. Find SMS app.
3. Force close SMS app.
4. Clear data on SMS app.
5. Go APN settings.
6. Do Settings RESET of APN.
7. Reboot.
It worked for me - though I am in a different operator.
What is also important - MMS comes when you are not on WiFi. Only on Data.
Good luck!
Try these settings for your APN.

To be honest I really do not know. Once I changed to those settings I no longer had issues with MMS and had better speed. They also seemed to help a lot of other people. YMMV

Ok, so this is really annoying and any help would be appreciated. I am spending the summer in a place where there is no 3G (i know right...) and only edge. Problem is that whenever i try and send a picture it will just sit on sending and nothing will ever happen (besides my battery dying...). I can't seem to get pictures either. The weird thing is that i traveled to somewhere with 3G today (Nashville, TN) and the pictures still didn't send. Now i know Edge is super slow, so i tried sending a small picture, 290 x 343 @ 40KB and that wouldn't send either, so file size is not the problem. Also i have tried both of these APNs, XDA and Reddit with no luck. Please don't be useless and recommend checking my APN settings because i have already done that multiple times unless you have a different one that works. I am on a postpaid ATT iPhone 5 (LTE) plan. Thank you for any useful replies. Possibly throw some BTC to whoever helps me resolve this.
Edit: Also I would like to make clear that data works while on edge, just not MMS.
First, you are on the wrong plan. You should be on the non iPhone, non LTE smartphone plan. I'm not sure if that is making a difference, but second, did you try the apns I posted in that xda thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40899440
A) There is nothing wrong with being on an LTE plan, that's how so many people got their LTE to work. Secondly the iPhone portion should be find since the data works, it's the MMS that doesn't and MMS is a standard. I will try those APN settings and report back shortly.
EDIT: Tried your APN settings, same thing, stuck on sending since i replied to your post.

I pretty much figured that because the plans should be backward compatible. It may not make difference which plan you have, but AT&T sure makes a big deal about it. If those apns didn't work for you, then it is unlikely you have an apn issue. MMS is not hard to get working. You can use the two apn setup I provided or one of the single apns and as long as you have MMS in the apn type, it should work. Just make sure you are entering EXACTLY as it should be, or it will not work. Idk if AT&T will assist you since you have an unsupported device, but if you call them, the first thing they are gonna do is switch your plan. Are you rooted or not? Have you tried a factory reset.
Yes and yes, the problem arose when i arrived in this place with Edge only, previously my phone had never seen Edge. Nothing will send on edge, and when i traveled to Nashville yesterday the items still didn't send nor did any new ones even though i was connected to 3G. I doubt it is an APN problem since it was working (somewhat) fine in SLC.
Ok so something weird, it seems the problem is with my texting app. Lightflow will flash the LED signalling I received an MMS, and i will get a notification in the web portal for mighty text saying the same thing, but from my phone nothing is shown. Any ideas? Currently reflashing the latest version of PA Gapps.
Just curious, did you "delete / cancel" the stuck MMS messages, before trying to send new ones?
I have seen issues with this in the past.

Yes, i deleted the previous messages before attempting to send again.
So i reflashed gapps and all the messages people tried to send me showed up with a button to download the content, but every time I click on it it fails. Pictures still won't send as well. Also there is a new icon to the right of "sending".

Just reflashed stock and pictures seem to be sending fine, not sure though yet, and haven't been able to get anyone to send me one yet, this is with the stock APN settings. Gonna change to the ones listed here (the ones i was using) and we will see how that goes. And yes this thread will be bumped all to hell until this is resolved.
Flashed stock, and changed APN settings to the ones i was previously using, and MMS is fully functional now. Though this we have concluded that the problem MIGHT lie with PA. Going to attempt a completely clean flash of PA and i will report the results.
Ok, so my M8 died on me and I didnt want the M9 since it did not improve over the M8. So I bought a M9+ on Ebay from Asia.
I live in Stockholm and the LTE band 20 (800mhz) is only used in the smaller cities, I get good 4G signal strength. I also get good speed with broadband test about 60 mbits down and 10 up.
But its very, very slow todo anything network related on it. I have tracked it down to a DNS problem, if i install and run this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dnset it will use Google DNS using a local VPN connection and after that the internet connection is very fast. Is the phone using a Asian DNS instead of my ISPs? How can I verify which DNS is being used? The VPN solution above is not a long term solution because of the security risk
Did you check the APN setting and see if it match your carrier?
Do you mean the APN url? Yes, it points to a url on my carriers domain
I really need a way to find out which DNS is being used when I do not use the dnset app mentioned above. Could you guys help me out? The phone is unusable without using the app above. WIth the VPN tunnel active the phone is very fast. But I dont know how to verify that its really a local tunnel like the dev claims
Can't your carrier help?

Thanks, I did look at that program but missed which tab I should use, was under the DNS tab.
It uses the correct DNS(s) so cant be that.
I reseted the APN settings and now It's alot quicker.
I restarted the phone and now its slow again. Ping & DNS reports a DNS of 172.21.120.6. Which seems strange? Reseting APN time around does nothing
I deleted the APN settings and reset to default (If I only reset to default nothing happens) and now I get correct DNS addresses of 130.244.127.161 and 130.244.127.169 which I have confirmed belongs to my ISP.
I am now afraid that the ebay seller have installed some kind of tunnel to spoof my trafic. What do you guys think? This is the ebay seller and item

Another strange thing is that the VPN settings menu is locked with a password that I have not set myself
Go into Recovery and do a factory reset. This will may delete all apks you dont want on your phone. Else reinstall European RUU but you will need Soff and root.
Doing a reset now, how do I know if its a custom rom installed from seller (With possible tunnling feature). Here is a screen from menu

There is no option to reset?
edit: found M9 guide (not plus) and it says to go into recovery mode. Tried that, I just displays a triangle for a few minutes and then im back at the fingerprint login screen.
I did it from the Settings menu instead. Will that reset be as hard as the one from the boot menu? Why is my boot menu missing factory reset?
Alot of questions now, but why is my bootloader locked? Shouldnt all new HTC bootloaders be unlocked by default?
No bootloader is locked normally. To get into recovery you pressed power and Vol Up right? Because every smartphone needs a recovery and i tested it at my M9+, it works.
I press vol down and power to get into the download bootloader (First screen above) I can then go into the booloader (No screen on that above) and then I can go into recovory, but then the phone just displays a warning triangle like the screen above, and then after several minutes it boots the phone back into the lock screen and i can go into the phone with pin or fingerprint. THere is no menu option for hard reset anywhere in those menus?
"Press Vol Up + Power + Home Button (Fingerprint) when the red exclamation appears and youll be inside recovery mode"

That got me a little further, now I get, but it boots me back to the download mode and with the text
