Hello all i have a stock r800x the phone has ran great for the last month but over the last week it has become very slow. mainly in the messaging app the threads take forever to come up or it will fc from timing same for the keyboard when you attempt to text. I will hit a letter and it will just hang up and fc it is a nightmare to text on this phone as of late. i do not want to do a factory reset to try and fix the problem because i have a ton of gameloft games installed and would hate to lose the game saves. also getting games back from them is a pain in the ass.
any ideas what my problem is?

Try clearing data for the messages app in manage applications
my phone has doing the same thing just cleaned the data for it will see how it goes
as much as i'm concerned, i tried quite a lot of things, including clear cache n stuff, but turning of 'Sync' (automatic sync) does aid this...

I can confirm this. If your Txt message database gets too big (too many messages stored, and too many threads) it will get awfully sluggish and occassionaly give you the FC/wait/Report options. If you hit wait, it should come back, but may still be sluggish.
I suggest that you limit all threads to a max of 200 messages (preferably 50~100) and that you delete any threads you don't still need. You can use a SMS/MMS backup application (several don't need root) to back up all the data if you want to keep it in case of needing info out of it, or for archival/audit purposes.
Completely clearing the data from the app (not just cache) will reset the DBs and after the first open to reinitialize the DB, it should be snappy again.
This maintenance will need to be performed regularly if you don't go into the app's settings to enforce thread-length limits.

+1 wise words, i dont keep messages, as soon as i reply the thread usually gets deleted, i know some people like to keep sms/mms messages, like ryocoon said though, there are many sms/mms backup apps out there, that you can use to save your messages
never had this problem with Handcent. ^_^

So, I think we can all agree that 2.1 has it's share of crazy little bugs. Some more serious than others, but I'm not here to have a go at Google. I'm more interested in seeing some of the weird little issues that pop up now and then, that don't annoy you too much and can normally be solved by just rebooting the phone. Some people seem to be getting very worked up about some of these small bugs, when most of them can be solved with a restart. These phones are starting to become more and more like our PCs, and it's harder and harder for Google to make Android 100% bug free, so at least there aren't all that many apocalyptically bad issues.
Here's my first submission - installed a few apps today, opened up the app drawer and for unknown reasons the names of the new apps were all shifted to the right as shown. Rebooted. Fixed.

Any other weird glitches?
I had exactly the same bug, but a restart fixed it =)
Agreed.
I think we need to think of these devices as small pc's that can also make phonecalls.
Lets be honest they do more on the the technical side now than just a phone.
And........ when was the last time you owned a PC that NEVER had bugs or needed rebooting now and again, MS are still releasing bugfixes day after day for Windows/Office....etc
They're not perfect, but god damn they're good.
That problem with the names being shifted can also be fixed by changing language to something else (Settings>Language & Keyboard Settings>Select Locale) then changing it back. I choose English UK then back to English US. Not sure what causes the bug or why changing languages fixes it, but getting same result with a little less effort isn't too bad in my book.
Sometimes it will show the wrong contact sending me a text message on the notification bar.
I.E. "Vanessa" sends me a text message, but the notification bar will say "Shaniqua," until I click on it.
A computer is what these devices are, they just have the added functionality of a phone.
I agree, there are man little bugs, that I'm sure will be worked out (mostly) eventually. Just the other day, I was in a Gtalk chat, when I received an SMS. I switched to the SMS window, and the conversation was correct, but the persons name was still the same as in Gtalk. Mind boggling for a few seconds. After I backed out of the screen and went back in, it was fine.
The audio notifications constantly malfunction. The vibrator always works, it's just the sound often doesn't accompany it as it's supposed to.
When I plug the headphone jack into the phone, it often automatically plays the music player - while I"m opening Pandora.
If I open Gallery soon after taking a photo, the newest photo(s) will often times not be there. Sometimes they fly in after a few seconds, other times, they don't show up until I go back to camera, or even take another photo.
Some interesting bugs on this build...but all part of the fun of being an early adopter. I still love this phone...I mean computer.

do you use sms popup by any chance? i have this issue too
I sell cell phone for a living. When I have people come in saying their phone did this or that, yada yada yada, I explain to them it is a computer just the same as their PC is a computer, and from time to time it is going to glitch. That usually gets through most peoples skulls, no matter how thick, and they come to understand that having to power cycle every once in a while is not a defect, it is just the nature, especially when it comes to smart phones.
And now that we are seeing the first "super" phones, as I like to call them, the Nexus One, HD2, and so forth this is only going to become a bigger issue people need to recognize. That "phone" you use more often to surf the web and play music, yeah, it isn't a Nokia 6010, it is a 1ghz computer with a touch screen that happens to make phone calls.
It is impossible to back up all of my sms with an app (i have over 50k sms) so how can i manually take them off of my phone and put them back on the phone when i flash a new rom?
Most of the messages are from my girlfriend and DO NOT want to loose them, its the only thing i car about on my phone...but its so damn slow and i would like a new rom, the one i have now is from 9 months ago
With SMS Backup +, you can send your texts to a specified folder/label in a Gmail account, and restore them at a later time.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/sms-backup/com.zegoggles.smssync
i have 50k messages do you know how long that would take? plus i already said that it is impossible with any app.....the phone just freezes after a little bit cause i have a crappy rom on it
Ah, I missed the k part in there, heh. Yeah, I have no idea how you can manually do it (if it's possible I guess).
...more googling for me....YAY
Or just grow up and delete most of them

I have a ton of texts from my son in basic training that are important to me (whenever I start missing him I just go back and read them). If you're using CM6 or AOSP you can just back them up with Titanium Backup and restore the SMS messages. Today I switched from CM6 to LiquidSence and that method didnt work. I installed SMS Backup & Restore from the market and was able to restore all of my son's texts.
SMS B&R has a "no duplicates" feature. It will check to see which ones have already been restored and will pick up where it left off if your phone freezes.
I get it, it will take a long time. But if your messages are as important to you as mine are to me, it's worth it.

Hi, do us all a favor and keep your ****ty comments to your self. It is apparent that you have no one in your life that cares about you or you care about them. You will be lucky if your in box hits 10 by the end of the month.
If incoming messages are sign of importance, I'm right up there. I get a couple hundred a day, but most get deleted when their usefulness expires.
Your phone may be slow because it needs to be purged.
Handcent has online storage for donators I believe....
thats just it....the rom i have is a beta (didnt know that at the time) so it is really buggy now i get force close messages on almost everything i try and do....i just need a fresh rom and the ability to take the sms off manually and place them on a new rom

All jokes aside, you'll do yourself a BIG favor by not taking comments/posts personally. Getting worked up over something online doesn't do anyone any good (besides the entertainment value 3rd parties receive from it ), especially yourself.
Onto the actual topic now: As trindy said try using SMS Backup & Restore. It should do the job you need - should being the operative word here because I've never heard of anyone backing up over a few thousand messages...let alone 50,000
Hope it works out for ya
hello everybody my name is brad
so last week my battery seemed to be draining quickly on sat. was going to go trade battery on Monday but everything seemed back to normal. then today i noticed random restarts.
later in afternoon the messaging app would go directly to compose a blank message with no recipient, when hitting the back button it would then just directly back to home screen. i app killed it, force stopped it all kinds of stuff. then after restarting all my messages were gone except the ones on sim card! yeah tmobile was a sheet load of help, not. Anyway i assume the messages are permanently gone. for future problems what is best way to back up sms? free app preferably.
so to end this, think its a bad battery or internal memory? bad battery? and where are sms messages stored, internal or sdcard?
oh and one last thing. only thing i installed recently was the new mail app.
thanks - brad
are you rooted?

Best way to backup is an app in the Market called SMS backup and restore. Backs up to SD card.
As far as the reboots, have you tried turning USB debugging on? That seems to have helped some people with the issue.
Here's a shot of the app:

I am running a recent CM11 nightly on my Nexus 4. I have recently noticed some suspicious behavior. First, I installed a guitar tuner that I use a lot (gStrings) which would not start because it said the Microphone was being used by another app. This persisted through several reboots. I chalked it up to a bug with CM or and incompatibility with the latest Android and forgot about it.
Then, last night my prepaid balance lapsed and immediately I started receiving messages saying "Your MMS message could not be delivered. Insufficient prepaid balance." The problem is that I very rarely send MMS and I certainly haven't sent any in recent memory.

It could be a fluke, and the two above things may not be related, but it was enough to make me want to investigate further. I am planning on flashing back to stock just to be safe, but first I'd like some help tracking down whether or not there is an issue here or enough to believe my phone has been compromised somehow.
First I checked my logcat and noticed a few suspicious things:
I see several cancelNotification messages from MMS:App and several composemessageactivity calls from PackageManager. Here are a few from a time I wasn't sending any messages at all:
Code:
12-22 13:47:28.333 I/PackageManager(685): Adding preferred activity ComponentInfo{com.android.mms/com.android.mms.ui.ComposeMessageActivity} for user 0 :
12-22 13:47:28.373 I/PackageManager(685): Scheme: "mms"
12-22 13:47:28.373 I/PackageManager(685): Adding preferred activity ComponentInfo{com.android.mms/com.android.mms.ui.ComposeMessageActivity} for user 0 :
12-22 13:47:28.454 I/PackageManager(685): Scheme: "mmsto"
12-22 13:47:28.454 I/PackageManager(685): Adding preferred activity ComponentInfo
I also see calls to an MMS notification sound that I've never heard before. I also don't know what AwesomePlayer is (something built in to Android?):
Code:
12-22 15:39:34.304 D/AwesomePlayer(208): printFileName fd(44) -> /system/media/audio/notifications/F1_New_MMS.ogg
I pulled my mmssms.db from the phone and looked through it and didn't see anything that jumped out at me, but I admit I don't really know what I'm looking at.
Next I checked what apps have permissions for sending messages and didn't notice anything unusual. Google Voice and Twitter are the only user apps listed with access when I checked with xPrivacy (xPosed plugin). F-Secure App Permissions also show Twist, Google Search, Hangouts, and Google Play. But it looks like from the logcat the stock mms app is being called, so maybe something malicious wouldn't show up here?
I have not installed any apps I would consider "shady" and have never touched any pirated apps, but I do have a few installed from outside the play market. These are:
AdAway
dSploit
xPosed Installer
xPrivacy (xposed plugin)
Here is a complete list of apps installed on my device: http://snippi.com/s/uh08y66
I downloaded Webroot and AVG antivirus and ran scans. AVG flagged dSploit as a "potentially unwanted program" and warned that my device is rooted and I have 3rd party app installs allowed.
Is the above evidence enough to believe my phone is compromised or is there another possible explanation for the MMS activity? Like does T-Mobile maybe use some component of MMS to keep in communication with towers, etc?
Any ideas what else I can look at to try to get to the bottom of this before I flash back to stock?

Yea same guy. I'm definitely going to wipe it. The reason I installed CM11 in the first place is because I was getting interested and trying to learn more about security - so I was hoping that I could gather a little more data on this and see if I could figure where I went wrong. I guess the lesson is the same one at the beginning of every spy movie: don't trust anyone. Especially the guy who says that to you.
get droidwall, firewall to block apps that don't or shouldn't access the net, I did this to block dolphin browser using my data when I wasn't aware, some apps send yourself txts, you notice this when receiving them in flight mode.
perhaps restore to an earlier backup.
I thought xposed framework had security flaws unless they fixed that, one reason why I never tried
Don't you agree to c.m statistics when you flash C.M roms now if so it collects data and has to be sent some how.
Never looked into it myself and haven't run a c.m rom for a while but it's worth looking at.

My phone is stock, no changes other than a few apps have been disabled.
I am getting an unwanted popup after I receive a call. It wants me to install Instagram, or another program. I have scanned with Malwarebytes but it finds no viruses.
Any help in getting rid of this appreciated. Please see the attachment.
Thanks.

Do you have ES File Explorer (think I see it in the background)? Try uninstalling that app and see if the ads persist. ES File Explorer may be presenting adverts and popups.
Thanks, but that did not work. Onto the next guess!
are you using a custom launcher? some of them provide ads on your ohone.. also try removing any apps that are known for showing popups
Chinese apps tend to have overlays like that, especially those cleaning/boosting apps. Get rid of those and see.
When it pops up, do you see anything more in the expanded notification bar? If yes, then press and hold on it and tap on "app info/detail". From there you can see which app is displaying these pop ups and disable notifications.
Thanks, Using ADW. Removed and still there.
Don't have any of those, but good guess.
No way to expand the notification nor any way to get more information. Talked to Motorola support and they had me clean the cache and that did nothing either.
Last case resort, start uninstalling apps one by one with the newest one first. When the pop ups stop, you've found the problem.

Prior to using the last resort method provided by riggerman, you can view how much data/wifi each app is using that is currently installed on your device. This can be done by navigating to network info in your settings. Then simply compare that data to which app is eating up your memory at the time of the pop up. A more in depth method would to use an app that is designed to gather in depth data on installed apps specifically for the user, such an app would be Android Addon Detector available in the Play Store (link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.denper.addonsdetector). I wont write up the way to do it cause I don't have that kind of time at the moment, and it'll do you good to teach yourself given the internet and the app FAQ and developers site because knowledge is power, and knowledge also helps to quickly deal with little piece of bull**** that land on your path in life, such as annoying popups
Removed 2 backup apps and seems to have gone away, thanks.
Had the same popup problem. I said STOP in response it has gone away.
