So, I think we can all agree that 2.1 has it's share of crazy little bugs. Some more serious than others, but I'm not here to have a go at Google. I'm more interested in seeing some of the weird little issues that pop up now and then, that don't annoy you too much and can normally be solved by just rebooting the phone. Some people seem to be getting very worked up about some of these small bugs, when most of them can be solved with a restart. These phones are starting to become more and more like our PCs, and it's harder and harder for Google to make Android 100% bug free, so at least there aren't all that many apocalyptically bad issues.
Here's my first submission - installed a few apps today, opened up the app drawer and for unknown reasons the names of the new apps were all shifted to the right as shown. Rebooted. Fixed.

Any other weird glitches?
I had exactly the same bug, but a restart fixed it =)
Agreed.
I think we need to think of these devices as small pc's that can also make phonecalls.
Lets be honest they do more on the the technical side now than just a phone.
And........ when was the last time you owned a PC that NEVER had bugs or needed rebooting now and again, MS are still releasing bugfixes day after day for Windows/Office....etc
They're not perfect, but god damn they're good.
That problem with the names being shifted can also be fixed by changing language to something else (Settings>Language & Keyboard Settings>Select Locale) then changing it back. I choose English UK then back to English US. Not sure what causes the bug or why changing languages fixes it, but getting same result with a little less effort isn't too bad in my book.
Sometimes it will show the wrong contact sending me a text message on the notification bar.
I.E. "Vanessa" sends me a text message, but the notification bar will say "Shaniqua," until I click on it.
A computer is what these devices are, they just have the added functionality of a phone.
I agree, there are man little bugs, that I'm sure will be worked out (mostly) eventually. Just the other day, I was in a Gtalk chat, when I received an SMS. I switched to the SMS window, and the conversation was correct, but the persons name was still the same as in Gtalk. Mind boggling for a few seconds. After I backed out of the screen and went back in, it was fine.
The audio notifications constantly malfunction. The vibrator always works, it's just the sound often doesn't accompany it as it's supposed to.
When I plug the headphone jack into the phone, it often automatically plays the music player - while I"m opening Pandora.
If I open Gallery soon after taking a photo, the newest photo(s) will often times not be there. Sometimes they fly in after a few seconds, other times, they don't show up until I go back to camera, or even take another photo.
Some interesting bugs on this build...but all part of the fun of being an early adopter. I still love this phone...I mean computer.

do you use sms popup by any chance? i have this issue too
I sell cell phone for a living. When I have people come in saying their phone did this or that, yada yada yada, I explain to them it is a computer just the same as their PC is a computer, and from time to time it is going to glitch. That usually gets through most peoples skulls, no matter how thick, and they come to understand that having to power cycle every once in a while is not a defect, it is just the nature, especially when it comes to smart phones.
And now that we are seeing the first "super" phones, as I like to call them, the Nexus One, HD2, and so forth this is only going to become a bigger issue people need to recognize. That "phone" you use more often to surf the web and play music, yeah, it isn't a Nokia 6010, it is a 1ghz computer with a touch screen that happens to make phone calls.

hey guys. do you still remember those keychain finder, where you just need to whistle and the keychain answers with a loud sound to let you locate where it comes from?
i searched the whole droidpit but nothing found like this for android. woudn't it be an idea for a new app? start it as a service on boot and when you're thinking about where you put your phone again, just whistle and our android answers with an alarm ... maybe a skillful developer can punch in some lines of code to realize this app ... or would that drain the battery too much?

good idea to say the least, but would probably cause severe battery drain since it would have to always be running(at least when screen goes to sleep) not to mention how many times you would be in public and your phone would make an obscenely loud sound out of nowhere(you know it would!)
Interesting, but much easier to send it a text and have it sound an alarm

Hard to send a text if its the only phone you have an you're alone somewhere.
This is a good idea, but might be a little hard to implement.
Send a little text via twitter would be the best method I guess.
You displaced your phone, write a little twitter-message with your computer and your phone will answer with an alarm.
and what if you either don't have your computer or your second phone at hand? ... if I misplace my phone at home i just give it a call from my fixed-line. send twits or email is not a solution if I don't have 3g enabled or don't have a data plan - that said I need an other device for sending at first ...

yaa OR what if your phone is on silent, then sending a tweet, text, or call would have no effect...
BUT on the other hand, I do believe that this would kill the battery, considering not only does it have to be running in the background, but it would have to be constantly scanning for the whistle sound, using the microphone every second while it's asleep.
Unless someone knows another way to achieve this aside from constantly scanning... hmmmm
Let's put our brains together.
i wanted this too! who cares about battery drain i have a charger at home in the can and in the office if out and about can close the app whistle fonder whould be no use if you lose it in town etc
There is an app called "Where's my droid", that will turn your ringer on, volume up, and ring for up to 5 minutes by sending a text.
Thats a GREAT idea! I would heavily use such an app. Ill subscribe to this thread, I dont want to miss anything.
BUMP! I want this to happen!!
There's a open source project called musicg sound api about it:
http://code.google.com/p/musicg-sound-api/
btw you can have a look on the relevant app too:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.whistleapp
I'm thinking it should require that you record a whistle for it (something short and relatively simple, but unique), and it only responds to whistling that resembles that (maybe write an algorithm that requires... say... 80% recognition?).
Seems kinda complicated, but also seems like the only way to protect against it going off anytime you're out in public and someone whistles.
You could have the app check some additional things before checking for the whistle... Check to see if the screen is off (obvious one), maybe also check to see if it's moving using the accelerometer (if you can't find it then it's most likely sitting still somewhere). This could keep it from draining the battery, and it would also keep the phone from going off if someone whistles while it's in use port being carried. This app is a great idea.

Hi,
I'm almost in love with my GSII despite the fact that the keyboard is taking too much place on the screen when I'm writing a SMS or a simple message...
I encounter a "serious" problem with my GSII when I was writing an answer in a forum, I couldn't see what I was writing, there was no focus on the written line :

At this time the copy-paste and the pinch to zoom are becoming inaccurate, if I want to re-focus in the good area, as soon as I tap another word, the screen moves down automatically :
Same problem in Dophin HD or whatever keyboard installed.
Very... very annoying.
Did you noticed this too ?
Thanx
Up please. I need to know if the problem is software or...
I have to say I find this very, very annoying as well. It's not super terrible in the stock browser, but I'm using Firefox and I can't even see the text window. Also, I'm getting weird behavior in Firefox. At least in the xda forums, nothing gets inserted into the text box as I type. Gonna try a restart to see if that helps. In my screenshot, I've got XT9 on. With it off it's only marginally better.
Tanx.
Yeah the notification tab is too big. If you can't see what you are writing in a such big screen, what's the point??? Samsung screwed up big time on this, never had that problem with other Android phones.
Hope they release a fix for this quickly or maybe the new firmwares already solve the problem but I'm waiting for official ones.
Probably my major annoyance with the phone. Often you have to guess what you're typing because as soon as you start typing the text goes up out of sight in some places like forums and such.

Did you get the latest firmwares ?
Well, slightly annoying, but when typing (forums, logins, etc.) I hold it in portrait mode ...............
Yeah you right, but I randomly encounter the same problem in portrait mode... Plus in this mode, it becomes more difficult, for me, to read cause I have a bad sight.
We clearly have a super-phone here but problems like this shouldn't exist
I noticed this too, and I use Dolphin HD.
Very very annoying
Text editing in Android is just bad overall... needs to be fixed
It seems that we are only a few to be really annoyed by this problem... up !
I'm glad I'm used to typing in portrait mode. Landscape makes me slower, actually. I got in luck with this one..
Receiving my SGS2 this afternoon! (finally.. wasn't home on friday)
Up people ! Feedback needed !
My biggest annoyance with the keyboard is that the spacebar is too short, I keep hitting the full stop, which is a pain in the arse!!
Loving swype though.
Try HTC_IME_hi22 it will let you type and see where you are typing and doesn't take up as much room as the stock keyboard, plus, it has lots of settings to personalise it, I think you will like it.
Why don't you use preinstalled Swype Keyboard?
Use smartkeyboard from market. Its the first thing I install in any phone.
I'm already using smartkeyboard but keyboard isn't the real problem I think.
I use Swiftkey, and yes this problem is very annoying. What's worse though is I find tapping your sentence to place the cursor at a specific point utterly hit and miss. It's really, really hard to get it where you want it.
This might just be a problem with the forum I use the most (whirlpool), but it's bloody annoying.
I have to say, the iPhone is way ahead when it comes to placing the cursor where you want it. I'm hanging for a mod that uses the little magnifying glass thing that the iPhone has.

As the OP said, download smart keyboard
It lets you customize the keyboard however you'd like (well, almost)
In your case, you can make the spacebar bigger
I'm sure almost everyone has now experienced the freeze that happens sometimes when the device comes out of deep sleep, usually for a couple seconds.
I (personally) think its the only thing from making this ROM pretty near perfect. I have been trying to get to the bottom of this freezing issue for a few days and I'm sure a lot of other people have been trying too!
I have disable a whole bunch of things, and since it seems it could be related to WiFi (as many are reporting) I started disabling and uninstalling apps in different stages. Iv ended up with the following (see screenshots) disabled/uninstalled and have been repeatedly locking and unlocking the device (letting it enter deep sleep first of course) and have yet to experience the bug again.
Maybe it doesn't work for you, but perhaps someone can pick up from here and we can all get to the bottom of the problem! It might be impossible at this stage and may simply require a newer leak/release of JB for the i9100.

Hopefully this helps, if not I apologize, but think the problem needs any insight available
I have not freezed, deleted all the extra functionalities and stuff, but the problem is still there, even worst on wifi. I gave u a thank for make a step up to try to solve the problem
I have removed almost every single samsung app from syatem. Using apex instead of TW. Always have wifi turned off. Because i use my data plan. As its unlimited. I have this problem all the time. Is there anything i can do to help? Logcat or anything.

I think its a touch panel driver problem but better to do a logcat if you have time for this. I also have experienced the problem when trying to end a call.

Yes, last night I was using logcat and when the screen came on and froze the logcat contained data such as waiting for input, loading mali driver for touch recognition. I laso thought it could be related to motion control, as if its waiting for acceleration from it so as to use the camera motion shortcut etc but alas disabling motion didnt help either
Will upload a logcat or two later after college today!
It also happened to me too when trying to end a call after the screen came back on after taking the phone away from my eat. Ive also noticed that when the screen comes on and touch is unresponsive. The menu and back keys at the bottom are not lit. And after 4/5 seconds they light up and then it is working. Will post a logcat when i next experience it.

Tried many lock screen apps including the stock one, random freezing with all of them with wifi on. Have been using Holo Locker for a couple of days, seems to fix the problem.

I get around it like another user suggested,
I have a tasker that turns my wifi off when the screen goes off.
I also have phenomenal battery life this way. It is definitely a wifi issue.
I am a big fan of lock screen notifications and screen wakeup when those notifications arrive. When I have my phone sitting on the desk and it beeps for something, I want to be able to know what it is without having to touch the phone. If there is anything important then I can attend to it but otherwise I just want to take a peek and leave it for later.
HTC Sense 5.5 has a very limited implementation of this with only emails, calls, voicemail and calendar appointment support. And I also couldn't manage to wake the screen when the notification arrives. It just feels crippled. I don't understand why HTC would do that!!! Almost every app I use supports notifications and HTC's implementation feels like they totally forgot that people use their smartphones for more than just calls, emails, messaging and scheduling appointments.
Lockscreen widgets (like NiLS and Lock Screen Notifications) seemed like a solution but again HTC got in the way with Sense 5.5. You cannot add widgets on the main lock screen. You have to add a page by swiping from right to left and clicking the '+'. But that defeats the purpose as you would still have to swipe to see the notification.
After a bit of digging around, NiLS Floating Panel did the trick! All you need is the NiLS and NiLS Floating Panel . You just need to enable the NiLS service and turn Floating Panel ON. Of course you can customize the experience but I'll leave that for you to explore.
Here's how it looks on my HTC One:

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated to the developer of NiLS Lockscreen Notifications. I am simply posting a solution to a common problem. If you don't want to use this solution, then don't. If something didn't work for you, then maybe you are doing something wrong. So no guarantees here.
Definitely a cool idea but for myself, I'm just thinking, what other notifications am I missing? Just curious but what notifications do you miss out on without this?
I'm also looking for a good lockscreen addon. Really like the iOS LS.
Tried NiLS floating panel but apps will only open when there are 2 ore more lines of notifications.
I will take SlideLock, which comes nearest iOS Lockscreen. Only thing I miss is that when I listen to music, SlideLock doesn't show the Music-player Lockscreen-Addon to change or pause song.

If you use third party messaging services like whatsapp or even shopping apps like ebay, amazon to name a few have their own notifications. Say you ordered something on eBay and it was marked as shipped. They eBay app generates an alert for that. It's not that urgent so now you at least know that it was from eBay and it's not something you need to respond to immediately. On the other hand your spouse decides to send a note on whatsapp about something. This is something you might want to respond to immediately. All this is without even touching your phone that's sitting on your work desk. This is just an example and of course varies based on how and what you use your phone for.
I think it is quite practical to have this feature as phones are no longer just calls, texts and calendar appointments. When Android boasts of hundreds of thousands of apps, there should be some scalability with the features vendors bake into their phones.
Hello,
About a month ago I had the opportunity to renew my mobile subscription. After 2 years of enjoying Samsung Galaxy S2 I decided to go for the new galaxy S5. So I got the phone and everything was fine for the first few weeks. Got use to the phone real quickly but had only one major issue. Every time I loaded up heavy graphical apps like asphalt 8 I got a really annoying and weird pixel rendering all over the screen. I have tried googleing my issue multiple times and have looked on many forms but couldn't quite find anyone with the same issue as I have been having.
There are 2 screen shots of asphalt 8 and a TV streaming app.

The bug also appears when i use the dual camera option.
I really like the new S5 and most of my other apps run smoothly on it. My question is has any one of you have or had this issue? Is it a software bug and should i not worry too much about it? I really hope some body can help me with this issue.
My carrier is T-Mobile in The Netherlands.
Yours sincerely.
M. Stuart
Since you mentioned that most of the apps run correctly, I would assume that your phone is acting funny only to a specific type of game engine or a specific type of code.
I would guess that it is not hardware related since you do not experience this problem on other apps.
Have you considered a factory reset to determine whether the bug persists?
Those could be artifacts. Does the phone get hot when that "bug" shows up?
I think it is a hardware issue. Smart phones are like mini computer. Computers show artifact on the monitor if the video card is heavily burdened caused by overclocking or just a sign that the video card is breaking down.

My phone does get a little hot when i'm playing the game. Its really weird. One day i had the game run completely smooth for a wile but then to back to the pixelated state in seconds. Oke i tried the next things: Usualy i have my phone in a flip case. After pulling the phone out. The pixels appeard only on the start screen of the game (asphalt 8) and some light flikker once in a wile.
Didn't know that it would be that big of an issue. The pixelation is still in the other apps. Now i'm wondering should i go to Samsung and ask them if the can relace my phone or do i have to live with it like this for the next 2 years.
Anyways thanks for the advice
Go to Samsung and have it replaced.
