I've tried re-encoding the movies and messing with the settings, but I always end up with much crappier video than when it played on 1.5. I don't remember 1.5 having the banding issues in the darker colors, but in 2.1 it's really quite horrible. Has anyone found a solution to this? Even youtube videos look like garbage. I thought the final release would possibly fix this, but it hasn't.
They have the 2.1 source now, so expect fixes in the camera since thats everyone's problem lol maybe they can implement 1.5 camera in the 2.1 rom who knows.

Devs had 2.1 source before, and have had for a long time. What devs do NOT have is source for the HTC .29 kernel (yet).
It's not really the camera I'm talking about... I probably should have been clear. lol Sorry, I was just a little disappointed..
I have some movies that I ripped from my dvd collection that I watch once in a while on my phone. On 1.5, I never noticed any "Banding" issues. The video would be smooth and look really good. But since I updated to 2.1 (custom roms with leaks) the video just looks like crap, especially if it's darker. You can see pixelated areas and severe banding. Especially in Total Recall and The Thing from Another Planet (1950s one). The darker areas are just crappy looking. Tons of banding issues and pixelation.
Those of you who dont know what banding is..

I personally have not noticed this. I cannot imagine that it has to do with your conversion software/format, but I use videora without any issues. It's made for an iPhone but works perfectly for our heros since they have the same resolution. Might be worth a look.
Handbrake for the win.

I've used both videora and Handbrake. I mostly have used Handbrake, but I went as far as downloading a crap ton of others to try them out and nothing fixed it, no matter how many times I tweaked the settings.
Do any of you watch movies? Not ones made by the camera on the phone, I'm talking about real movies from DVDs.

The screen resolution on the hero to me wouldn't be all too great to watch movies from. I think the EVO might be better for that among other things.

It worked fine on 1.5. Screen resolution has nothing to do with it.

I bought my N1 with no contract, so on T-mobile i can get a Vibrant for like 160 if i renew for 2 more years. I already have my N1, is there a compelling reason to go for the Vibrant? Besides the nice screen does it do anything better than the N1 already can?
Better Camera for pictures
720p HD video recording and playback (not sure if N1 can do 720p play back)
Pocket $200+ when you sell your N1
I just sold my Nexus One this morning. I'm having a lot more fun with the Vibrant!
There are some people on this forum that went from the N1 to Vibrant; I don't know if I would. The Vibrant is really nice, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. If I were in your shoes I'd wait and see what comes out later this year. Gingerbread will be out by the end of the year, and there are supposed to be some killer devices coming out to go with it.
However I did come from an N900 so it's not like I was really doing that bad, either...
If I had a N1 I would wait for the next gen phones before upgrading (end of year, early 2011). Unless you have to have the latest and greatest, then buy the Vibrant and get the next gen when it comes out as well.
Here's a new vid that just came out,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFPtV8I2BRQ&feature=player_embedded#!
I sold my n1 for this. I think its a good upgrade... there's a few things I miss but the fact that its harder to replace since I can get it replaced in stores and Google's done making em..
Also I needed a true MT screen and the gpu. Other than that I thing there pretty even. Oh and this gorgeous screen....
Non-rooted Nexus One can't do 720p.. but if you root it and apply the hack (or ROM includes it) then it can do 720p recording on the Nexus.
The Vibrant cannot do 720p playback, the resolution of the phone can only do 480p at the most. It can play 720, but it will have no benifit vs a 480 version of the same clip. The nexus can play the same resolution clips that the vibrant can, but the vibrant has more video codecs to play.
I wouldn't have gone from N1 to Vibrant. There is not enough of a difference
I have the N1 and won't be changing. I bought a Vibrant for dev at work and thought I might switch personally but you currently give up as much as you gain. The positives are listed above, but you lose:
-froyo (for now)
-trackball (nice sometimes)
-camera flash
-future 'first' Android updates
Plus, the annoying home button lag is real. Sounds like the only way to currently fix is is rooting and moving over all the apps to NAND, which negates the app storage advantage (which was initially my biggest want).

Don't see how it could simply be a housing, because the camera lens on the Magic is in the center, and in the iPhone its on the left corner, i seriously think it's legit. I mean, Android itself was ported to the iPhone, so why not iOS to android?

I'm honestly not sure what to think, really. Since all iPhones have 3.5" screens, a Magic case would need to fit proportionally, so someone would need to make a bigger magic-esque housing, and that one looked pretty damn real (notice the backlit keys).
I could just be a video playing, but the screen seemed to be quite responsive.
It's definitely not a theme either...
Kudos for getting the iOS4 working with anything but proprietary apple hardware, but isn't this like replacing your high-tech, highly-customizeable batmobile with something much worse?
It's interesting that the wallpaper slides along with the icons like it does on Android, I didn't think that was possible on iPhone OS. I can only assume it's just an application mimicking iPhone OS (notice how the home button is bound to the back button).

It doesn't. I have an iPod touch with iOS4. Of course, mine has the nexus lines live wallpaper. XD
This is really cool, and I doubt its fake. It has to be very possible to port it, just who would really want to? You get nothing more than a few bragging rights because I doubt many people want iOS4 over Android 1.6 2.1 or 2.2. The ONLY thing iOS4 has which is probably more hardware related is crisp graphics. Games look AMAZING on iPhones and iPods but pretty bad on Android devices.

I've looking and found conflicting answers, but what file types does the Epic support?
mp4, dvix, and a few more? What about AVI or others?
I wish I had the chance to play with mine, but we're supposed to have 6 reps in store and we only have 2. So between 12 hour shifts and lines out the door, not much time playing with the device, sadly.

If the internals are anything like the other Galaxy S's, it should play all those formats, NATIVELY. The Galaxy S lines are one of the most well rounded when it comes to media file playback. Samsung's wide support of these media dates back to their Yepp mp3 player days and all with fantastic linear audio quality output.
Just check out how linear this thing is:
A quote from gsmarena.com
Perfect audio quality
Like many other things about this handset, the audio output of the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S is downright impressive. The handset was reasonably loud and scored excellently on each and every reading in our test.
The signal-to-noise ratio is impressive and so are the flawless dynamic range and frequency response.
The distortion levels are also top-notch and generally there is nothing about the Galaxy S audio quality that we can frown at. And here go the results so you can see for yourselves.

All of this is thanks to mDNSE - mobile Digital Natural Sound Engine chip. This is the mobile version of the DNSE chip found on their TVs, DVD and other home theater systems.
Has anyone confirmed the video codec support? Since the Epic isn't shipping with the same version of TW as the others, it could be missing some of the codec support found in them.
One of the things holding me back is the screen actually. I tried a Vibrant and noticed the smaller screen, same thing applies to the Epic

while the screen is a little smaller than the evo, the screen display is soo vivid. I took the 16gb micro SD card home, d/l'ed clash of the titans 720P .mkv and hot tub time machine, (and put super troopers .avi) and it looks AMAZING. It kills the evo screen. Lighter than the evo. Battery life is awesome on it. I got my coworkers in the rolodex and we just go in the back and text each other from it all day. Love love love this phone. When my boss told me I would be the advocate for this device, I was depressed for about a week or so because I have had nothing but HTC since my mogul, and the moment was not that great of a phone (and the intercept isnt anything worthwhile either... and if I had a dollar for everytime someone complained about a samsung inSTINKt!!! lol). Now, I dont feel bad at all cheating on the HTC brand. This phone is epic! If I find some fatal flaw after it being in my posession after launch.... well, I still have my full upgrade to get the evo, or whatever the next 4g phone will be...

I just found a article that talks about installing a ffc in the Samsung vibrant. Apparently t-mo didn't change the internals too much from the UK sgs phone.
All they did was swap the camera for a cheaper cam. The UK versions cam is easily swapable with the vibrant one giving you a ffc.
The only thing I'm confused on is that both the article and the install video both talk about specific ROM being needed that provide the functionality for the ffc to be used.
I'm currently using axura and am curious as to what I need to flash in order for this to work
Sent from my futuristic phone
There's a pretty busy thread over in the dev section that has all the information. The main issue you should pay attention to is the banding effect it causes on the rear camera, some people are working on it but its slow going.
No Axura works great for ffc. The ffc will get some banding in low light conditions (red-lines) but in normal light it is not an issue. Use tango works great you need roughly 1.7mb 3g connection for it to work ok or be on wifi.
I have a thread on how to disassemble. it is easy to install, look up the Siirial thread as well it has alot there
I use the camera (comes from the I9000) in my vibrant and make video calls to my wife it works as good as good as the Iphone..... so those Iphone fags con just go cry
You can pm me if you run into any issues
I really want to mod my vib with a ffc. Ive seen videos and read threads on how to do this but still a little confused with the banding issue. I wish that gigantic thread over in the dev section would update the op with all the up to date informatuon of whats going on and whats working.

The bigger problem is the rear cam's banding. Even in full daylight there is uncomfortable banding. In anything less than full daylight, the banding is nasty. I reverted back since, like most I assume, I want decent photos.

Assuming that ad copy is accurate.
And also assuming that this Euro version is the same hardware as the US version (which it clearly isn't since it's SLCD and not SAMOLED - who knows what other internal changes it might have).
We've been led to believe in the past that the lack of 720p video recording was a hardware bandwidth limitation...no software will change that if it's true. We could do 720p if/when some gets around to hacking in a method, but it will be at reduced framerates. I suspect a lower resolution at higher framerates will usually be a more pleasant viewing experience.
The i9023 (as opposed to the US i9020) has a Super LCD screen instead of a SuperAMOLED one but I suppose as part of the screen swap, it can capture true 720p video.
That would be the most bull**** thing Samsung haf done yet.

Is it possible to upscale to 720i instead? Similar to tv's?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Before everyone jumps to conclusions, keep in mind that the original launch page for the Nexus S (http://www.google.com/nexus) said it would be able to take "HD videos" on the Features page while stating only 720x480 on the Specs page. As we all know, 720x480 is "Enhanced Definition" at best, not HD.
So this could be a similar situation. Or, it might have a different camera module that has the on-board video processing chip.
Personally, I think the 720x480 video the original NS takes are actually pretty decent, and I'd much prefer the battery life improvements of an AMOLED screen over SuperLCD.
I also think the video is quite good already, but higher res wouldn't hurt. But the still camera needs some work, my NS is not nearly as good a my old vibrant.

The problem is, if its a codec issue then how do you get it onto the sns if its a matter of Google not paying for it? I don't see how anyone can fix that. How do you even get codecs on this phone? Sounds like there's no legal way to do it right?

Are you still convinced that it's an hardware problem?

Read under encoding, and you realize by yourselves that H.264 encoding it's not supported on android 2.3.3 and before. First version of android with H.264 encoding is Honeycomb (3.0).
So it's definitely a codec thing.
Considering one of the lead Android devs said on his twitter that 720p recording is not available on the Nexus S due to hardware bandwidth limitation, I tend to believe him. I am not sure why we have ANOTHER 720p thread either. There is already a longggg one open that talks about all of this. The ad is incorrect. The SLCD version is the SAME as the AMOLED version, minus the screen.
I think it takes great pics and decent video but you kind of expect HD coming from a phone like this... NFC could have waited for the next google phone IMO.
Doesn't 2.3.3 support WebM, which is a hidef codec?
