I love my x7500, except this hardware keyboard that is poorly designed and not very functional. But there is the way to use this device and type very fast with built in software keyboard! Just go to the Options for keyboard and change size to Large. Now keys are accessible without using a stylus! I am very happy now.

even the hardware keyboard isn't that good compare to Universal, i still find it quicker compare to the soft keyboard.
Does anybody know anything technical about the KB? It should be possible to make our own keyboards for the Athena if we can just find out a little about it.
Imagine a small clip on adaptor that sticks to the bottom and has a PS2 socket on it
I've considered making a magnetic ribbon cable for "detached" use. Where you hold the keyboard in your hand and it's connected to the Athena via a magnetic cable that attached to the two components. Not sure if this would be worth anything to anyone out there but it should be VERY easy to make.
I also wondered if there was support for a docking station like use, with charger and keyboard plugged in, so you pop the athena into it and it charges as well as connects the KB.
You dont suppose the kb is actualy just USB do you?
I think some kind of slide down qwerty keyboard similar to the hermes / spv m3100 would be great. That way the keyboard could clip on the back of the Ameo and then the keyboard could slide out? if you get me?
The magnetic keyboards great if your at home, or in the office, but out and about its not practical.
I do agree that the software keyboards pretty good with large keys, thats what i use.
Yes, a slide out KB could easily be incorperated into a clip on protective case. In fact, you wouldnt need a new bk. Just mount the existing one into the slide part of the case, where the case would have a ribbon cable to make the connections.
There is a HUGE market for third party KB mods for the Athena, HTC really missed a trick here by not having some alternate kbs ready at launch.
For example, why doesnt the Dock have a KB? or a KB socket? Jeez, its not hard to put a ps2 socket in the dock, or a slot to put the normal Athena KB into it!
How about a large full size KB with Athena connector in it...
have you guys tried go-ten yet? Nothing can match this in terms of accuracy and speed. I've tried Resco, Spb, Hikeyboard, the standard default both big and small, and nothing come even remotely closed to the ease and speed of go-TEN for me. It is unconventional at first glance, but once you see it, you may wonder why was'nt all soft input keyboard so smart, easy, and quick. If you use predictive text in SMS you may get the idea right away.
There is very very small learning curve only. Only six keys most is the times, but you have the option is pressing all 26 characters.Best thing is there is a free version.
Try it, and you won't want the hardware keyboard again.

Have you tried any of the soft keyboard options out there?
TenGo is not as intuitive as it appears, but is smart software.
OK just given the TenGo SIP a good run for it's money tonight. It is a very nice lookin application that has real potential.....BUT....the learning curve is a major drawback IMHO and not worth the time to learn. Why do I say that?
Firstly, I/we use QWERTY keyboards of one type or another every day and wether it's afull sized USB PC keyboard or a slide-out PPC keboard or SIP based, the QWERTY principle really has left an intuitive mark on me at least over the years and learning a new system does not make much sense to me if it is not going to be everywhere....just on my Ameo.
2ndly, I have no time to keep checking if the predictive text has recognised the word I intended for it to type. I mean if you don't check what you're typing regularly, then by the time you've reached the end of your document/txt, you'll struggle to make sense of what you have typed yourself!
3rd and last, I like to use slang terminology and this causes the predictive technology more problems in recognising what I have typed e.g. it will try to guess what slang I have used and effectively translate it to something similar in it's perfect english database.
Verdict? Perfect for those who write perfect english all the time and have the time to learn and train a new system,....BUT useless for those who already know what they want to type and just want it done quickly without spell checking every word as they type. It is very smart software indeed, but not natural or smart enough for the human mind. Gimme a larger SIP panel instead.
Not for me, but thanks for the heads-up.

Ha ha, that was my first reaction too. So I almost passed it up initially without giving it a fair chance.
This are the facts:
1. You have not given up your qwert keyboard. It is still functioning 100% as one. If you choose to press the precise position of each individual 26 keys, what u type on is also one of the words that can b selected. Therefore you can still use slang such as lol, gtg, brb, etc. C how I can intentionally use shortened words on this post?
2. It is to b thought is as a very forgiving qwert keyboard, because of the built-in intelligence. You can type in the exact spelling of your words, not just limited to the words in the dictionary.becausr while it tries to predict what you want to type, what you actually type also appears as one of the choices. Now you see why slang is not a problem?
3. the system is actually very smart in selecting the default hint word out of all the suggested ones. The default choice is the underlined and first hint word. You don't need to do anything in order to select it other than the space bar ( which u hve 2 anyway w normal qwert keyboard) The only difference is u need not be precise in typing. U merely hve 2 touch the correct keygroup. U got it?
I thnk u r really going 2 like it once u go thru the 3 min tutorial. THERE IS ALMOST NO LEARNING CURVE!
JUST WATCH YOUR TYPING SPEED FLIES!
btw, there is a known problem with tengo installation. You may have problem selecting this as the default sip, or even selecting it.
i'll find the thread later and post it here.

Installation problems aside, I agree that one can write a very nifty speeds and that the learning curve can appear to be low. My point was that it is not natural, certainly not to me.
I see your point about being able to use slang, but as it will not be the default word selected, you have to select it yourself each time you use it or teach the database a new word (slang) in order for it to recognise it in the future.
If it works well for you eaglesteve that's great and I wish I was as capable at adapting as you are, but for me and possibly for others, I'm looking for a SIP keyboard that will help to improve/enhance the way I'm already used to typing without feeling unsure if my document/txt is being typed correctly. I know you know what I mean.
However as your experience has taught you, maybe one evenings worth of testing is not enough for me to dismiss it so easily. But then I have kept it installed for further testing alongside my usual SIP methods.
Thanks again for the heads up though.

You don't have to teach the dictionary that the slang is a valid word. when you use it the first time, there will be an audio warning. But if you used it once, it automatically gets into the dictionary, and become just another normal word the next time you type it
Funny it is exactly because I want an SIP keyboard that will help to improve/enhance the way I'm already used to typing without feeling unsure if my document/txt is being typed correctly that I think tengo is the answer.

Well the topic says it all.
I want to add a sound to the opening and/or closing of the keyboard.
Is this possible?
Thanks
Any hacks for this? I suppose that the opening of the keyboard calls some kind of an event (since sliding it open changes the screen orientation) So can this same event call be used to assign a sound as well?
I also want to kno this and was going to ask right before I came 2 see this link...so please answer!
There are some really talented people here. I would have thought someone would have done this by now. But I assume, from lack of info, that this hasn't been considered before?
Would someone, who has the skill set to do this, consider looking into it and seeing if it is possible?
Thanks a million!!
Have a good one
Try this thread.....
Cheers!
That thread refers to the Herald, or Tmobile Wing. I found this thread and thats all I've been able to find for the Wizard or Tmobile MDA.
There may be a registry key that needs to be modified/added after installing the HTC Sliding Sounds application to make it 'active' for the Wizard.
Any ideas?
Im trying to figure it out too.. I dunno how to get it to initiate...
Need someone with the Herald (T-Mobile Wing) to help
Under HKEY\LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\SlidingSound there are 2 keys 'ActiveSlidingSound' and 'SlidingSoundEffect', these are for setting which sound of the 3 available to use, I'm assuming.
Anyone out there know someone with a Herald or T-Mobile Wing that is willing to share what they have in this folder in their registry?? Maybe there's and EnableSound key or something to that effect that us Wizard users can add and we'll have a happy day!

I just checked mine and under SlidingSound, there are 3 folders... 0, 1, and 2. Each folder has 3 keys... Default, in, and out. "Default" is the name for the sounds (ex: Wind Chimes, Piano, and Xylophone), "in" is the location of the file used for when the keyboard slides in (ex: Slider0_in.wav), and the same applies to "out" for when the keyboard slides out (ex: Slider0_out.wav).
Also inside the SlidingSound folder are 2 more keys... ActiveSlidingSound and SlidingSoundEffect. ActiveSlidingSound refers to which sliding sound you want to use... so in this case it would be one of the 3 folders mentioned above (0,1, or 2). SlidingSoundEffect refers to whether or not you want the sliding sound on. (0 = off, 1 = on).
Hope this helps!
I installed the software that was made by JUVS....it does not work on my MDA.
Any other ideas? I had tried searching before I made this thread initially, and i had not seen the 2 that are discussed here. I apologize for having made a 3rd one.
Back on topic, I certainly hope this can be made to work. Any other ideas?
Thanks for all the info so far.
Later
this is a really cool idea, i would also like to know how to do it...

Thanks so much! This does help!
Unfortunately, I have the same keys on my MDA after installing the application for the SlidingSounds and it doesn't make sounds when I open the keyboard physically. I'm suspecting that the MDA is missing something, possibly a hardware switch (don't think so, though, cause it has to detect when the keyboard opens for landscape mode).
My guess is that this will not work on the MDA
Umfortunately I'm not a programmer, but I was thinking that the easiest way to get somethig like this to work would be to link the sound to play with the screen rotation instead of trying to get it to work when the keyboard is slid out which obviously isn't working anyway. It would play the sound if you rotated your screen manually, but I can't see why that would be a big deal. Maybe someone with a little programming knowledge could get this to work though.
I wanna keep this thread alive. SlidingSounds is something i wanna see work for wizards. It'll be cool if someone could craft a workaround or a new prog altogether.
Opening the keyboard is an event, shouldn't be hard to craft something to have it make a sound.
Any updates on this? I downloaded the app and it hasn't done anything, especially when messing with the registry. Thanks.
I've been working on tis as well but it seems that there is no way to adjust the registry to get it to work. I believe a app is gonna have to get the wizard to have this feature.
This would be so cool.. Alot of people have 'flip' style phones, and when they open them, they have some funny sounds. Would be great to have on the Wizard!
Anybody figured this out yet? I'm really sure it can be done.
im all about hacks for the wizard, but...
im assuming that you saw a wing and are trying to duplicate it...
WHY would you want it to do this?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!
same question for the menu pop sound?
those are the most annoying things i've seen on phone... well except for the default startup and shutdown sounds on all retail phones... when you turn off your phone, isnt because you're somewhere that you should be sure it wont be ringing/vibrating?
but on the other hand i still can't understand why people like to have the keys beep on their regular cell phones when they are txting...
sorry for the rant... i just don't get it

Maybe because we love the bells and whistles a gadget can make, it's all about your custom love that you want to have, not just everyone's universal preference. Some of us love to customize our phones to suit our personality, not just YOURS. Maybe these sounds grab attention of chicks, maybe this wallpaper makes us look cool in the sight of geeks. It's all personal prereference.
That's why I want keyboard Sliding Sounds to work. It's just one more thing that will grab the attention of people to see that, yes, I don't need a new phone every six months or so. I can make a new one using an old one by utilizing hacks.
Even though it seems that no one else has this problem or wants it resolved, I CANNOT stop the Capitalization of the First Letter when typing mgs or emails!
And of course I have unchecked the setting! Tried all kinds of check/uncheck settings in Input, etc. !
So the last resort is the Registry. Does anybody know where I can find this key that controls Capitalization?
Thanks
I have the 'new' Generic UK R2 ( and did not have this problem with R1 -but that had a different Customization Software ID though!-)
I´m interested in a solution too! Unchecking the settings seems to have an effect on the software keyboards only...
settings>input>keyboard>options
untick the capitalize XXXXXX
eh?
What exactly is the problem? You don't want it to auto capitalize the first letter after a full stop? I seem to be having the opposite problem, mine rarely capitalizes when I want it to after a full stop.

I've looked for a solution for this for many years, started with windows mobile 2003. You should believe that it could be fixed like altezza says, but he has not tried this himself because that choice under 'settings>input>keyboard>options' has never worked. A bug for how many years ..?
I find it very useful to choose by myself if I want a capital letter or not. Especially since we at least in Norway writes most abbreviations with a dot. Many folks do that, dont they?
A bit frustrating that the next word then is capitalized, i.e. Like this.
This Capitalizing or Not must be controlled by registry. Come on, somebody must know which key it is....!
If it would capitalize after a 'dot', okay but it capitalizes the beginning of a new line, no matter what!
And again for some that don't read my entire post: YES I have tried the settings check/uncheck... duh!
So again, this auto capitalizing at beginning of a new line has to stop.
I would not complain if auto cap at beginning of new sentence (dot/period) but this crap is unacceptable. I don't understand why nobody else finds a solution, expecially since this is there for quite a while.
Okay, kindly, somebody, what is that Registry Key?
So NO ONE knows the Registry Key? Come on, people here disect the ROM but no knowldge about this little key?
As per laaban message, since 2005 he's been looking for a solution. If you're 100% certain you can find it in the registery, why haven't you tried?
I think it is not the keyboard setting which controls the capitalizing...it is the programm you write with! For example: Writing a new SMS will capitalize the first letter but writing in PIGEON or OPERA doesn´t! Or what dou you guys think?
Pretty sure it's related to Pocket Office, something like Auto Correct, but my attempts at unticking boxes still made it happen.
I just do a Ctrl+Z to undo the "correction".
The settings menü under settings-> keyboard->options-> is only for the windows mobile notes program! There is still no solution for the other programs!
I tried searching but couldn't find anything to solve my problem, maybe I was searching for the wrong thing but here's my dilemma.
I have a brand new Sprint TP2.
When I read a text message on the messages tab in Manila, neither the little number in the scroll bar or icon in the notifications bar goes away (marking it as read) unless I leave it on the message for an extended period of time. Does anyone know a registry key I can edit to shorten this time, or another work around.
Thanks!
I noticed the exact same thing... really annoying when the text messages are short and you can read it in a split second... seems to have some sort of a time limit before the notification goes away...
there has to be a registry file that can be edited to make the time go to 0...
Yep, does my head in too!
There HAS to be a way to reduce or remove this...
Anyone?
Yes I've noticed this too.. It's very annoying.
What you'll also notice is if you are texting someone with the WM6 interface and keep the contact's text window open, it never marks new texts as unread. So when you go back you'll have all these new texts.
However if you use HTC's interface you don't have this problem but the HTC's interface doesn't work very well and it's not very dominant.

I have a couple of problems with the contact list and the phone favorites portion of the Sense UI.
1) Are there any way to display First name then Last name in contact list? Everyone in my contacts have Last name then First name.
2) Also, if it's just a company name, when you add a contact to the "shortcuts" (the 3x3 boxes), it says "No Name". There must be a way to fix that.. right? I'd hate to go into all of my contacts that only have business names and fix it by putting the company name in the first name field. Especially considering that I'm syncing contacts with Google contacts and I would prefer to have each field be accurate.
3) Lastly, because most of my contacts do not have pictures, and the "shortcuts" will only display first name. I would for example have 5 Johns w/o any way of immediately knowing which John it is. Are there any workarounds for that?
If it's a configuration setting for some/all of these issues, could someone please point them out to me? I apologize in advance if it's a simple thing and I just couldn't find where the settings are.
Allied to the points just raised - I would like to change my favourite contacts to display surname, not just the first name. Is there a workaround to achieve this please?
Bump. Are we the only 2 people that see these as issues? Or have you guys figured out some workarounds?
Count me in...i am shouting about this from my touch pro 2 time ... i have put a shortcut to contacts in main tab, and set it to view them filtered by company name, it helps a little.
To get first name first =
Find a contact, edit the contact... scroll all the way down to the bottom, and push the "more" button. Change the second "name choice" - I cant remember what exactly its named in english. But is should be the choice of how to vies the contact. In this form you can choose first og last name.
I have'nt figured out how to do/if its possible to mass change this. I have onlyd found one by one solution
Hope it was helpfull

I think what you're trying to say is change the 'File as' to First name, Last name.
Perhaps there's a registry hack to change the default behaviour of this field?

Search for ContactFix v1.3 & this will do what you're looking for. I use this & it works great on HD2.

I'm sorry to dig up an old thread of my own, but I still have an issue un-resolved from the ContactFix solution. The ContactFix solution does provide the sorting fix. However, in the Sense UI's "shortcuts" for the People, I can still only have a first name.
So if you've got 5-6 Johns and you don't have a picture for them, then you are pretty much screwed - you can't really tell which is which unless you have memorized exactly where on the shortcut list you've placed them.
HTC, could you please fix this? I really don't understand how something as basic as this was missed in QA!

I believe the shortcuts are meant to be used with a photo. There's no room there to put labels with first and lastname. So unless you name them John1, John2 etc, I don't think there's a solution.
30 seconds in MS paint should give you an image with Faceless John's full name typed on it. It's a reasonable workaround for those shadowy figures with no visible appearance.
Not perfect, but it's something.
Further to the earlier raised issue of contacts defaulting to File As.. Last Name, First Name.
I have between 450 - 500 contacts in Outlook and sync'd to my HD2 via Exchange Server. Works well. Nearly all of the time my contacts are added/edited on my laptop and I love the fact they are automatically 'there' on my phone.
I also like the HTC front-end interface for the Contacts bit of Windows Mobile 6.5, making it easier (finger friendly) to add contacts. However this interface neither gives you the option to default to File As.. First Name, Last Name nor let you change it on entry/edit. Instead you have to then go into the native WM6.5 Contacts bit and change it there. A bit of a pain and oversight in my opinion.
Ideally there'd be a way to set a default? Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance..
I'm sorry, but that's not a reasonable request from my point of view. The system should at least give you the option.
To be honest, I really think you've used to mediocre OS for too long. I did not just spend $800 so I can use MS Paint to paint a faceless John full name typed on it. If I spent $50, I might be okay with that, but not when I spend $800.

Actually, I have a question: Would a custom ROM for HD2 be able to fix this? I'm just asking about the possibility, not whether we can do it right now or not. I know that the phone is so new that we don't have custom ROMs yet.
But would it be possible for a custom cooked ROM alleviate issues like this?
