Trying to make goldcard, not sure.. - Click General

Hi,
I’m trying to make a goldcard from my Sandisk 2GB micro sdcard I got with my htc tattoo.
I followed this guide:
h ttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=603286
I’m not sure if it succeeded, I use the phone as sdcard reader to format and hex-edit the card. It seems simple and it all works as explained, but when I finish step 16 and remove the phone from the usb cable the phone says the card is not ok (its in another language) and wants to reformat it, if I reattach the usb cable, it wont let met use the phone as sdcard reader (diskdrive), and only gives me the option to use sync or mobile network. It seems to me that that isn’t the desired result? I don’t know…
One thing that is not clear is how to format the card: do I format the card with the phone or with windows. If I do it with the phone some folders are there, if I do it with windows its all clear.
But I tried both and got to the same point as expaned above.
Also I’m not entirely clear about why a goldcard is needed, what is the problem with a non-goldcard, plz refer me to some explanation. A quick google search didn’t get me there… It only seems very important from what I have read.
btw: Afaik my phone is not "locked", I can choose any provider (not sure about terminology here) and this thread says it is not needed then?
h ttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=674220
Atm, the end result I’m after is to be able to install apps on the sdcard in stead of on the phone (just to be clear about that)
The steps to get there afai understand from reading here and there:
1 Make the goldcard
2 get root access
3 backup the phone for if something goes wrong later.
4 install app to sd (haven’t read a lot about this one yet though)
So the questions:
1) what am I doing wrong with producing the goldcard?
2) why the goldcard anyway?
3) are these the right steps to get to install apps on the sdcard?

[guide] How to make an SD Rom Flash Image

[Your SD card will be formatted in a special format during the procedure below and you won't be able to use it for other purposes unless you reformat it again afterwards. Please be adviced that you will lose the backed up ROM on SD card when you format it afterwards again!!!!]
I successfully created a FLASH IMAGE on my SD card and afterwards flashed my T-MOBILE MDA from there.
The magic tool needed for this is the HTC mtty.exe (attached below)
You have to follow exactly the STEP-BY-STEP guide otherwise the procedure will fail! I will not be responsible for any damage on your device!
Please make sure that your battery is charged to at least 50% and also back up your device before following the guide below!
CREATING THE IMAGE ON SD CARD
STEP 1
Open ActiveSync (device not attached) and uncheck USB and COM port in Connection Settings. This is necessary to release the USB port for the mtty utility!
STEP 2
Get you an SD card of 128MB or bigger (fresh formated to FAT32) and insert it in your WIZARD
STEP 3
Set the Wizard in BOOTLOADER MODE by pressing and holding POWER + CAMERA and press RESET - if you got the 3-colored screen you were successful!
STEP 4
Connect the device via USB to the computer, then start the mtty.exe on your computer
STEP 5
Settings in the mtty.exe:
Port: \\.\WSCUSBSH001
(all other settings leave the way they are! Please pay attention that you write the port exactly as mentioned above: 2 backslashes followed by a dot and another backslash - this is not a typo!!! I attached a screenshot below)
STEP 6
Now click OK. You will get a notepad-like window with a blinking cursor. After hidding the ENTER KEY once you should see "CMD>"
Type behind that: r2sd all
STEP 7
The utility will start now to write your IMAGE to SD. Please do not interrupt the process! You can see its progress on a statusbar on the bottom of the device's screen. Wait until it shows 100%. Also: the CMD> will appear again on your desktop when it is done.
You created successfully your IMAGE on SD!
HOW TO FLASH FROM THE SD CARD ???
Turn of your device!
Insert the SD card with the IMAGE you've created
Turn on your device in BOOTLOADER MODE by pressing and holding CAMERA and POWER button and performing RESET
=> Now you need to be fast!!! A white screen will appear for not longer than 3 seconds asking you if you want to FLASH from SD card. You have to press the VOICE DIAL / RECORD button within that time frame otherwise it will switch to 'normal' bootloader mode.
That's it!
NOTE:
Do not wonder! You won't be able to read the SD card afterwards on a Windows computer - I just tried it. I guess the procedure above formats the card in a special format, at least Windows tells me that the card is not formatted! So, the draw back is that you can't use the card for other stuff but the ROM IMAGE!
Very nice article. A couple of typos, but overall very well written!
Just out of curiosity, I've seen another thread on making an SD image of a rom, but it indicates you have to be CID Unlocked for it to work. Is that true for this method also (I haven't compared the two)? Just curious as that is an important piece of information (either way) to make note of... So if someone with a CID Locked phone could try this, that would be great.
Also curious if this works for G3 and G4 devices.
I can't try it out on a CID locked device since mine is CID unlocked already!
The guide above is for real HTC technicans, so, I guess it should work either way!
If somebody has a still CID locked device: it would be great if you could give it a shot!
Does this uittlity make a ROM image as the OS is NOW (meaning with all tweaks and installs and everything) or just the basic ROM as you would get with a hard reset?
It is not a backup. It will put the factory ROM on SD card.
The actual image with all your 'tweaks and personalization' can be easily backed up to SD card by using SPB Backup or better SPB Clone.
Does this method work for wm6 ROM?I am a vista user
Not sure if the MTTY can connect from VISTA but in gerneral: it should work with any ROM version on your WIZ.
well, can we place our .nbf image file (wm6) on sd card and install it from the sd card?
Not this way! It will create a special formatted FLASH IMAGE from your installed ROM on SD. When you do it you won't be able to use the SD card for data storage until you reformat it again.
I am not sure if somebody came up with a solution for flashing nbf files directly from SD!
The procedure above is still helpful if you just need a backup of your shipped ROM or if you need to reflash an almost dead WIZ or if you have the need to reflash your WIZ on the go without a computer ...
Hi
I have a frozen **** brick which got stuck while upgrading (Dopodp800w) I tried to flash it thru sd card (which containes original nbh file in my doc folder).
When I try to invoke the bootloader it says "searching for sd card" then goes to 3 color band and nothing else happenes
Can you help me
Edit: Working like a champ.
But you need to edit the one in the topic. It dose not work. The one in the screen shot dose.
Thanks.

Great finding Junner!
Can I use "your" rom image to flash "my" phone? Or the image is unique for the one you got the image from?
Could you please investigate with your HTC Technician if this process is valid for both G3s & G4s?
Thanks!
Basically you will be able to use it on any phone!
My problem is that I only had 2 test devices: an European T-Mobile MDA VARIO and a 8125 from Cingular / USA. I could use one and the same image (SD card) on booth devices.
I have no CID lock and also no SIM lock on both devices, so, I can't give you a feedback on what happens if your device is locked.
Maybe somebody else has still a locked device and is willing to give it a try before unlocking? (But please somebody with experience! I won't be responsible if you brick your device! )
Is there any way I can take the Flash Image from the SD and convert it to nb file?

Hmmm, you would have to figure out first in what format the SD card is formatted. Afterwards you might be able to find an application which can extract the file(s) from the card.
I did not want to digg deeper than I had to, it was only importand to me that I can flash from SD when ever I cross the ocean from USA to Europe. That saves me a lot of 'setting up's' ... ... just flash and load backup!
Not working on CID locked

I tried in a G3 & also in a G4, both CID locked 8125´s. It didn´t work, see attached file for the message I got; looks for me that the CID unlock gives the proper security level to do make the command work. I´ll unlock one of them to see if the result is a different one.

Please help! HardSPL problems..

alright so I'm new to this, but I followed the instructions to hardspl, and got up to the point where i had 4.70yang as my spl, and was going to flash through SD. it wouldnt read the SD card, and i tried formatting it in FAT32, with the allocation unit size to 4096, and when that didnt work, i tried other variations. Then I figured I'd try flashing the other way, but couldnt do it because i couldnt get a sync with the computer. I didnt know whether to go into the actual canonyang ROM, but anyway I did, and if I connect the USB cable, nothing happens, no activesync. i tried the bootloader screen, no USB connection. every other alternative i saw, removing the hardspl, flashing otherways, etc etc i cant do without a USB connection. im not sure if i did anything wrong, im convinced i didnt. im hoping the solution is really simple, cause i cant get activesync to work.. im really frustrated, lol. if anyone could offer solutions, that would be amazing.

Please keep all non-development posts off the development forum.
As far as your problem goes:
Activesync won't connect per say in SPL mode but it should still let you flash. In SPL mode, there is no syncing so the icon never turns green but it still works just fine. As far as working with the SD card, the SD card cannot be a SDHC card. The SPL doesn't have a SDHC driver.
Try a smaller SD card (2GB's or less since they are usually non-SDHC) or flash through SPL even though activesync doesn't show as connected.
sorry about posting it in the wrong place. where should i have posted? and thank you for replying
and what IS the SPL mode? what screen should i be seeing? cause if i let it load then it just goes to the regular phone screen as if im on an actual OS, and sync doesnt work there. and yes im using a 2gb SD card, not SDHC.

Ok, make sure you followed these SD Flashing instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581996
It should work. And also, please read up on the terms, and that will help you understand everything.
And what Ivan was referring to, about flashing without ActiveSync connected....put your phone into the bootloader, connect USB, wait one minute, and then attempt to flash. Tell me if you did EVERYTHING in the first paragraph's link first, though.
OK. I see what the problem is. You're in the OS but the OS is the stripped OS.
Hold down your camera button and then press the soft reset button. Then you'll be in SPL mode. From there you can flash anything you want.
hey thanks for the help ive flashed a ROM or two using flash center so thats working fine i got past that. but im still trying to flash through SD. it wont read my card still after formatting it to FAT32 and putting the HERAIMG.nbh file. i read on another post that the nbh version number could be a factor? how would i go about messing around with that?
As I mentioned: Is your SD card a SDHC card? If it is, it won't work. The NBH version is set by the cook and if it works with the flash center then it works with the SD card. Any ROM created for flashing through SD card is made with the correct numbers.
Hey Ivan
I'm new here and i've flashed several ROMS via RUU, so far the Glass one is my favorite.. Since y'all are on the topics of SD or SDHC cards, quick question...
I have a 2 gb SD card and i've been unsuccessful in flashing via SD. Formatted in fat32, named it HERAIMG.nhb and put it in the root, already been hardspled. Here's the question, in XP it shows as "Secure Digital Storage Device" I was wondering maybe the bootloader couldn't read the SD because it's the "secure" type not the regular one? Tried the quick format and full format to no success.
any input would be helpful
Secure Digital is what SD stands for. No matter what brand you use, that is what they are all called. There is no regular or secure SD card.

I Need Help?

Ok I really need help on creating a Goldcard. I read everywhere and I must be a morron. It Read that I need to get the CID of my memory card and that I can do it with another WMdevice. I can get another WMDevice but how do i use it to get the Cid. I believe i can figure out the rest. Its just the whole CID thing i cant figure out.I need a Goldcard for dummies guide. I do run WinXP if that makes anything easier or worst. Thanks the help is deeply appreciated thanks.

you also need a prog called qmat, though its not free for the hd2 enabled version, though the old version will be enough to get the cid, just not create the goldcard.
mind if i ask why you need g card? its not needed for flashing anymore, use HSPL
EDIT - oh, and if you are thinking of using it to change the language on your phone !!!STOP!!! there are NO non tmous official roms that will work on your phone, they will ALL contain a radio that WILL destroy your phone.

long story short installed a rom on hd2 tmobile phone and it froze up i tried reloading different roms and nothing it would always boot back up to the bootloader screen even if it said install successful. so ive tried everything to try to recover it except the gold card method. I started with spl 2.10.000 now its on 2.00.1 and i want to get it back to 2.10.000 or get it to start up again. Also I did get qmat the trial anyways but how do i get the cid with that?
oops, biiig mistake, well im not even sure a GC will help, but anyway
get the free version from HERE (EDIT - oh you already got it)
run it with your other phone connected and the card you intend to use insterted, go to hardware forensics, winCE sd card utils, click 'get sd serial and Disk ID'
long number at top is your cards ID.
Doesn't that happen if you don't have a radio installed?

i tried that it says device not connected. So do i need a working hd2 or is there any other way to do this? my phone only boots up the to the bootloader screen and says usb at the bottom. qmat is not recognizing it. If i need a working hd2 phone i do work at a cell store i can **borrow** one for a bit.
doesn't have to be hd2, no, any "working" windows mobile, with the sd card you want to use in it. connect the phone, connect to active sync (doesn't need to sync, choose "connect without setting up") then run psas
so i have the Goldcard.img i loaded it with hex editor and tried copying it over to my sd card then loading leoimg. Once i edit it i need to reformat the card there for erasing everything. What am i doing wrong? Thanks.
when you write the goldcard image, you are writing it to the header, not the card, so formatting the card shouldnt touch the header.
Why do you need to format the card though? start with a blank, freshly formatted card, , load the goldcard image (you cant just copy it on, but i guess you know that) then copy on leoimg.nbh and put it in your phone. wheres the format part come in? (not being sarcastic, it was 18 mths ago i did it)

[Q] Why is my SD card not responding?

I can't seem to get the NAND work properly.
Every step went well, but maybe I forgot something.
Once I flash the ROM I reboot it twice.
When I start marketplace and download apps, they disappear from the download list. They don't get downloaded at all. With another ROM I tried the download part works, but after the install the app doesn't seem to work. After a few times plugging in and out the USB I got an error about my SD-card being ReadOnly. Am I doing something wrong? I didn't manually make partitions or anything on the SD card, should I have done so?
Also I've noticed that after I put files on the SD card and unplug the phone from the PC, astro can't find the files. Really confusing
Does anyone have the same problem or know how to fix it?

First of let me tell you that I have never had this kind of problem neither I have heard about this problem. But one thing you can do is use Panasonic SD formatter (Free) to format your SD card. Do not mount your phone on the PC. In place of that remove SD card and use some kind of Card Reader to format the SD card from PC. Also keep Full Erase (ON) in the settings for formatting.
I would also recommend you to do Task29 before flashing new ROMS. After you do Task29 install radio (2.15.xxxx preferred), install MAGLDR 1.11 or 1.12(I would not install 1.13 which is released recently. Wait and watch for that version), After you perform these steps, you should install NAND ROM on your device. Also try and find the Rom which has more versions. What I mean is for newbs like us, we should try roms which have been tested by many other PROs. and also there are plenty of video tuts on how to install NAND rom. Follow them closely.
Here is a good tutorial that might help you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91mnfufny-Q&feature=player_embedded

I did exactly what you said, but I'm still having the same problem. After I installed the NAND rom I connected my phone to my pc and dragged some files on the SD. The phone didn't see any of them, so I took my SD out and formatted it. But now it's not recognizing my SD at all. I will try some other roms.
I had that problem some mounths ago. One day it was gone. i cant tell why
I have a similar problem. To work around it I remove the sd card and reset the phone with the red button under the battery cover. When it comes back up, i insert the sd card and all works normally.
Our problems arn't exactly the same but worth a go if it helps.
after a long search i found this:

and the fix from ehsan worked !
no problem downloaden and no problems with the SD anymore! woohoo

[Q] Small dualboot question

I've been running wp7 on my hd2 for awhile now and recently wanted to dualboot it to android.. looking at the guides I'm not quite sure about this, will using the partition managers format my data currently held on wp7?
I don't want to lose my texts or contacts and I don't want to have to call ms again for another activation code since I seem to have lost the notepad doc I saved it in xD
I may be wrong but I think it will remove what is on your card already. You can always buy a second SD card and use it to run Android from, just dont boot to WPY with that SD card in the device or it will format it for use with WP7.
how big is your card? you should at least be using a 16gig card if you want to DB, but 8gig is still fine BUT all your files/ data will be erased since you need to reset the phone. Alternatively just like what T-Macgnolia said, get a 2nd card & place the SD ROM there & boot from magldr.
this is what i followed - again yesterday - for my friends HD2's dual Boot system.
remember that the partition for Windows should be a little larger than that of the Andy.
http://www.jayceooi.com/2011/02/10/...hone-7-and-android-on-htc-hd2-with-1-sd-card/
as long as you do things right all will be OK but wrongly done You WONT boot into WP7 again as the partition will be corrupted.
What I do is Get another SD card & make an exact mirror/ copy of the one i use for WP7 so if one fails I still have a backup. Before proceeding though make sure that Both Cards do boot into WP7. check out the link below, it might help.
