Is there any known way to activate the phone by wifi or by using the computer?
This might be a silly question but.... Activate? Activate what?

well i mean setting up your phone at the start with your google account.
The g1 and mytouch 3g require you have a data plan to activate your phone (login or create a google account) and require people to keep the plan for the duration of their contract.
There have been a few ways to work around this for a g1 to activate your phone via wifi.
You have to connect to your computer open adb and enter some code so the wifi option will show up and you can configure your network so you can have a phone with out a data plan.

hahahah. lol im keeping one. it was the only way i could get in really cheap.. and make some profits by selling them..
How much are you going to sell the Heroes for? My roommate is looking at getting one, and I'd consider it over a 2 year contract extension with my carrier.
so anyone with the answer here?
well i know that you can just ask a friend and use his/her sim with data plan to activate your phone but can it be hacked like G1 where we use adb to get into the phone and turn on wifi to get through the activation process
it seems that it's the topic that not many people have touched on. so if anyone with the info on this that would be great because i have no friends who has t-mobile sim with data plan around me at all.. and i'm just staring at a very expensive paperweight right now.. i know i need to have data plan for MyTouch but that is eventually for now i just wanna test it out to see if it like it or not so any help from anyone that would be great!
any update on this topic? i am getting a mytouch through my company no contract or plan and i would like to activate this before getting a plan! any help!?!?
In fact it actually moves slower than EDGE most of the time, until H kicks in and fixes it.
It doesn't happen all of the time, but it happens alot.
Any ideas wtf is going on?

Take a look at that. That doesn't make up for the crappy coverage and expensive prices though.

The N1 isn't even compatible with AT&T 3G, so I don't know how this is relevant.
EDGE is of course pretty slow but I have absolutely no speed problems with 3G on my end - it's quite fast with low latency.
So how slow is crap? I've never seen it move.

Doesn't this more or less answer your original question?
I mean if you have that weak of a 3g signal I wouldn't expect it to be very fast.
Honestly in my experience even with just a bar or so, 3G is still quite fast...perhaps there's a lack of backhaul at the tower as well.

Are you next to the campus? The site there right on campus could be getting loaded down with all the students.
FYI, standard UMTS 3G is only about 100kbps faster than EDGE. Its the HSPA that is fast, so when it takes your phone a second to switch to HSPA, is that when your talking about it being slow? Then its fast once it switchs to HSPA for the data?
im asking this because i was in the local sprint store picking up a car charger for my wifes moment. i ask if they had a release date for the EVO he said no and 4g wont be in the area is who knows when . i said i wasunder the impression the EVO was 4g winmax but was able to use 3g as well .
well he looked stunned and if he had no idea what i was talking about .
so is it 3g and 4g or just 4g . if its just 4g i see no reason for myself to pick an evo till 4g is in my area
3g and 4g. In fact in some of the screen shots floating around you can see it connected to 3g. But regardless, it's definitely both.

It will have an evdo radio.
According to HTC, you won't be able to use 4G and Voice at the same time due to software limitations... which definitely makes it sound like it may be a possibility with a future software update.

Eh, it is the same way that you don't get 3g and voice simultaneously on the Hero you have right now.
I guess you could always go GSM AT&T and pay twice as much for the same voice/data package. Might as well pick up an Iphone too.
Hopefully they update the software to allow for data+voice, but it isn't even a phone-deciding factor for me. The EVO has 4g+3g+1x btw.

3G and 1X are really the same thing-ish. They are both in what's considered the 3G family. 1X being the lowest tier/speed and EVDO Rev. B the fastest.

Yes, and yes.
Of course I'm talking about the P6800 here, and not the P6810, which is the WiFi-only version.
If you're hoping that the Verizon 7.7 will double as your phone, then sorry, you're out of luck; NO American carrier will ever knowingly allow a device which "does it all." It's bad for business you see...

Bluetooth "pen"
Oh, and if you don't want to look silly holding the thing up to your head to talk on the phone, in addition to using a regular bluetooth earpiece Samsung has this device out now:
http://www.gadgetreview.com/2011/03...set-acts-like-a-second-phone-but-smaller.html
Seems ideal for a tablet. If not for the much better camera in my phone I'd be tempted to shed it and just use the tablet.
Hold on a minute. Can someone clarify something for me. I know it has the specs to be used as a "phone". BUT, is there phone/dialer/messaging software on it. And does that thing on the top in the middle act as a speaker or earpiece?
Cuz, I'm seriously considering using one as a "phone". LOL the looks I'll get. And I don't care. Honestly people don't care anymore anyway. It's accepted. If you can carry it, you can talk on it. haha.
Thanks.

Yes, it works just like a regular cellphone. That speaker is additional to the stereo speakers around the charging port. It has dialer (Touchwiz-look) just like a regular cellphone. You just need to have a plan that includes voice and you're good to go.

So I imagine that ATT isn't too kind to allowing people use this as a "smartphone" though. I'll have to do some sweet talking. I'll pay whatever.
Also I'll need some kind of case with a grip on it to be able to hold it up to my ear one handed. OMG this is going to be hilarious when I show people my new "cell phone". Yes I know I can get a bluetooth headset but I'll just lose it or forget to charge it or whatever. One device.

Just got my Zagg Solo bluetooth keyboard and logitech bluetooth mouse. Works great as a desktop even Does everthing I need. Phone, tab, desktop
Only cons is some wifi issue and honeycomb is def laggy at times. Although after last update the performance was a lot better.
Hope they solve the wifi issues and we get ICS soon.

I have been using it the past week on ATT with the prepaid go phone sim card. Everything works fine. Phone calls and data are perfect. Getting data speeds of about 4-6mbps downloads and I am in NY.
I don't think ATT will care at all if your using their prepaid. I actually don't think they will even know what kind of device it is with the prepaid.
