In fact it actually moves slower than EDGE most of the time, until H kicks in and fixes it.
It doesn't happen all of the time, but it happens alot.

The N1 isn't even compatible with AT&T 3G, so I don't know how this is relevant.
EDGE is of course pretty slow but I have absolutely no speed problems with 3G on my end - it's quite fast with low latency.
So how slow is crap? I've never seen it move.

Doesn't this more or less answer your original question?
I mean if you have that weak of a 3g signal I wouldn't expect it to be very fast.
Honestly in my experience even with just a bar or so, 3G is still quite fast...perhaps there's a lack of backhaul at the tower as well.

Are you next to the campus? The site there right on campus could be getting loaded down with all the students.
FYI, standard UMTS 3G is only about 100kbps faster than EDGE. Its the HSPA that is fast, so when it takes your phone a second to switch to HSPA, is that when your talking about it being slow? Then its fast once it switchs to HSPA for the data?

Hey guys.
This is just something i noticed and i'm not sure why it's happening, it doesn't affect anything but i'm just curious. every once in a while i'll will notice my Edge notification change to 3g (i think) on the nexus one. or at least i think it does, the normal notification i get in the top bar is the "E", but sometimes it changes to "G".
I know this isn't possible because of the frequency but i just thought i would mention it. I downloaded the speedtest app so when it happens again i'm going to run a speed test to see if it's any different then the edge speed i'm getting
BTW
I'm running a stock n1 not rooted
PS i live in Calgary so maybe i'm getting some residual connection from Wind mobile somehow......ya i know i'm not, but it can't hurt to dream.....lol
"G" is not the same as "3G"... "G"=GPRS, which is the original 2G standard, "E"=EDGE, which is 2.5G, and 3G=UMTS.
Sorry to crush your dreams and hopes.

That's totally unrelated.
Well, not sure if anyone else has had this issue with their G2 yet, but I got mine today and found that the 3G/HSPA+ (I'm in Austin and we're an HSPA+ location) doesn't work. Edge is working fine, wireless works fine, but I had no hi speed data.
Spent a while on the phone with T-Mobile and they tried everything. Swapped SIM cards for the new one, master reset, checked my coverage area, checked my account, etc. No dice. Phone has been deemed defective. Grrr...my brand new G2 birthday gift. Oh well, replacement is being shipped out.
oh that just sucks... oooooooo i need to get home and open mine also now! and pray for the H lol... hspa+ area also
I live in charleston SC, we do not have HSPA+ just 3G. My phone shows the "H" when on 3G, how are ever going to tell if we are on 3G or HSPA+?
The "H" means you definitely have HSPA. The only way you'll know the difference between HSPA and HSPA+ is probably the speed. Unless there's something in the testing menu that shows you the difference.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
it should actually say "H+" if you in a HSPA+ area
The user manual actually says that it will show the H if you're on the HSPA, HSPA+, or 3G network.. so I don't know how we'll be able to tell unless we speedtest it.

You probably won't until they throw the switches on in all areas of your town. only like 10% of the towers in mine actually use HSPA+... the other 90% at still on HPSA/UTMS. Give it more time...
This is the one single aspect about the G2 that kicks the N1's butt. The 3G connection and radio reliability is awesome! Everything else is a wash for me. I'm actually starting to like the keyboard a little, too.

Telus 3G icon and H icon
If I can ask for one more clarification.
Up here in the Great White North I am with Telus who has HSPA+ coverage in my area : Montreal (no 2G available at all)
The icon on my Desire shows 3G unless I am accessing data then it flashes the H with the up and down arrows.
I am assume this is correct and the "H" only makes an appearance when it needs to access the data network. The rest of the time it stays as 3G
Important today as they had major connection issues and the H was not appearing even when I was trying to browse or update Facebook.

Heck, in one video the dude tests the G1 and G2 side by side in Speedtest and the G1 won! This is enraging! HSPA+ is T-Mobiles biggest marketing tool right now yet they made no effort to even see if it worked.

Usually it is because you went somewhere else and your phone hasn't locked on to you since you got back. For example, I'll travel to Dallas (I'm in Houston) and I'll update weatherbug to the Dallas area but if I go back to Houston and don't update my location via weatherbug or something it will show me 30 miles from the Dallas server.

Not true.
The current network limitation is 14.4 IIRC but if the network goes 21/24 or whatever it is... the G2 will go right along with it. Hence the HSPA+ moniker they are touting ever so much.

Nope. HSPA+ supports up to 21Mbps at present, but the chip in the G2 does a max of 14.4Mbps, as T-Mobile has stated since months before the launch (even before the G2 was announced they said it would be limited to 14.4). I suppose it is conceivable that a firmware upgrade would lift that limit, but I would not hold your breath.

Check under "special features." HSDPA 14.4 is supported. Nothing higher.
And I'm pretty sure that it's a hardware limitation of the chipset, so I don't think any type of firmware upgrade could increase that limit. I'm not 100% sure, though.
I hardly see the need for anything higher than 14.4 Mbps on a mobile phone anyway.

I can't seem to get this to work, bummer
We all know their network sucks right now, including myself, but Sprint is working on this. They are rolling out what's called "Sprint Vision" (and forgive my lack of technical know-how) basically they are adding some "boxes" with multiple "cards" that can be inserted in them allowing for better/faster coverage in multiple directions that can easily be fixed if one goes down by simply replacing this "card" (something to this degree). The full "vision" has not been rolled out yet and is mainly the cause why the speeds suck right now.
Oh God.... This sounds like they're trying to whip up a janky version of a CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System).

I read the announcement on this... its actually pretty good. The towers will now only need one refrigerated smaller box to do 4g 3g and 1x(saves energy and space) they will use fiber cables to the top instead of copper for less signal lose. They will need less towers because this one can do all of it.

What's wrong with this setup? The cable co's use it, and in most instance it works well. The issues occur when there's over saturation - not enough blades to handle the load. Speeds go down, noise goes up, speeds go down more so... Perpetual cycle.
In fact, I recently had an issue with my cable provider where during prime time hours, speeds would drop 25-40% or more. At first look it would appear to be a capacity issue, but in my talks with the head of local operations, that wasn't the case. Plenty of capacity in this area to go around. Turned out during prime time, due to additional load, a failing card/blade (not the one I was connected to) was generating noise, which ultimately was causing my issues. They replaced the offending part, returning my speeds back to 20mbps at all times of the day.
Bottom line, who cares what method they use to increase speeds and bandwidth, so long as it works and is consistent.
Well it makes sense here..whatever it is...they might have it done in my area of Chicago....because a couple weeks ago 3g improved in a major way. Data downloads fast here now.

haha, definitely! i never got those speeds on Tmobile's HSPA+, tho my device maxxed at 1.2 Ghz, if that makes a difference.
tried again on new rom, had more APN connections. tried the att LTE and it doubled the speed to about 2000kbps now. getting better! it a rural area too.
edit: now around 3000-4000kbps. much better. was barely getting into the thousands earlier.
Ah there you go, that's getting better. Despite the good speeds, the network has been annoying me a bit lately. Sometimes i will have a perfect connection, my status will show HSPA 10, with excellent signal, yet i can't connect to anything, can't load anything. I wonder if it's because it's L.A., and there are millions of iPhones and others on the network, and data-only plans don't get priority? The priority thing is my theory at the moment anyway, haha. I have never experienced this on my smartphones, but then again, this is my first experience with AT&T mobile data.

Yeah, you will probably get some good speeds in the city. I'm running stock 4.2.1, but I have thought about trying CM 10.1, but not just for that reason. I think I might call AT&T later and see if I can find out about the tablet plans. I have heard about some customers not having priority, like if you are subscribed to a sister company but are running on the same network as the main carrier. I'll let you know what I find out.

That shows that you are on WiFi though.
Has anyone tried tmobile? I talked to support and they said they have prepaid plans for tablets. Might go try it out and see if I can use their service. I heard people having trouble, but that was for the regular mobile plan. Maybe the data only plan will work, and be much faster. Going in today, I'll let you know and then post results if things go well.
Cool, let us know. When i fist got the device a month ago, they said they didn't have any tablet plans all they could offer me is a wifi hotspot device.
OmG **** ATT. Tmobile FTW. Haha.
edit: if you want more info, just went into the store and asked about the mobile broadband plans. I said some people had trouble online, but It was probably because they tried their phone sim card. this is data only or something, so it worked right as i put it in the slot and rebooted. So much faster. Wow. $35 for 3.5GB. Same pricing as AT&T basically. WAY faster.
And they stay consistent too.
