Thats exactly like using a gsm hero's source code for our development. I don't really think so. but i could check it out and port some heroc stuff to see if it'll work
We've ported Eris dumps and Legend dumps (their source is also out). I understand it won't go straight out of the box, but since the Eris is almost identical to the Hero we have, I would think modifying it for us wouldn't be an issue. Wasn't the only difference hardware-wise was the light sensor on the Hero versus the proximity sensor on the Eris?
My luck...it'll be that camera again.

do a string search for heroC in make menuconfig for both droid eris source and hero cdma source and tell me if you see the board configs for our phone in both of them. Its not as easy as porting roms from the same architecture as ours. If you noticed, in all the ports we replaced the kernel in the boot.img with our own leaked .29 kernel
This can only mean one thing. The update is near.
That's cool. Just an idea since it could be a while until we see our source code release. Wasn't trying to ruffle any feathers here.

Ya never know though. Look, the Incredible code was released quick.
I may be wrong and we get it within a week or two after release (hopefully, I am wrong). I'm going by the last time source code was release, which was four months later.

This leads to the question of why it was released with the 2.1 update...is this a new HTC or does Verizon have a hand in this?
Either way, this is nothing but good news for us and future Android phones.
Hopefully, it's HTC learning from the delay lessons of 1.5. If not, I guarantee that Sprint won't go to bat for us getting the source code...that may eat into their potential revenue for the Evo.

sprints never going to go to bat unless it affects their bottom line if it doesnt get relaesesd we will have to do the same thing we did when getting the source for 1.5 and start an email and call campaigne hopefully that wont come to that though as I think the 1.5 delay was becuase of the way that the kernel was hacked together to get CDMA support and with android now nativly supporting CDMA it hopefully wont be an issue.
Ahh really? Our soucre code for the. 29 kernel is the last thing we need. An overclocked kernel with working camera! oh well, I hope we can get it shortly after the 2.1 update goes live

Hi Xda .. hope every one is fine enjoying their PRIVATE lives!
I was thinking that the eris leak is a setup plan by htc they gave the leak so that EXPERT developers here at xda could tweak the update make it awesome do all the work and then htc download it from here and modify a little with branding and themes and announce it officially!

I doubt they are using it for the devs here to finish
They are probably using it for us to "beta test"
Or it could be a real leak with nothing to do with htc.
Lol.. if that were to be true.. HTC would have leaked it when 2.1 was released..

I LOL'd because it's believable, though I doubt actually true.
Imagine if the official update came out rooted with a2sd enabled and powered by the teknologist kernel!

for that to happen they'd need to release the kernel sources first...
@topic: if it was true, it wouldn't change anything... we can not keep htc from spying here... but it would be really funny if someone found a prove that they used stuff from here

I wasn't being serious...
It would be quite funny if they did. I'm sure they will keep an eye over here, as they seem to patch any root exploits we use, then we beat them, then they patch and so on... or maybe they just subscribe to the Linux kernel security announcement group
Kernel sources would be nice, as would an official release so we can get Google earth working and get rid of the silly cdma only issues that persist. I wonder if the original leaker could get us a gsm image?
How old are you guys? Sometimes this Forum really feels like elementary school.
HTC's devs are way more capable than any of the devs here. Why? Because they have the ****ing drivers, sources, device details. They built their OS. Sometimes we can't even get basic features working here, or get constant FCs. Sorry to break it to you, but HTC doesn't care about this Forum.
I doubt it but if at all, they might have leaked it to get early feedback. Maybe that's why we don't see the ugly Espresso version with the bubbles and ****. They might actually release some screenshots or test versions on purpose to test the waters.

I just read this tweet and came as fast as possible to xda to see if there was any buzz about us getting a usable kernel source hopefully after our last debacle with the kernel source, htc has decided to just go ahead and make it standard protocol to release it immediately after the binaries
toastcfh ported this source like 3 weeks ago . old news, but thanks anyways

We still need source code to get Mic and other things working.
Under their own laws (found in Settings>About Phone>Legal Information), when Google officially releases Froyo for ANY device (Nexus, Droid, G1) they must release the source code. So, once they release a device version of Froyo, they must release Froyo on source.android.com.

Google is becoming very HTC-y about source. Give it a week or 2. FroYo has been out for N1 for a couple of weeks now. This is an updated FroYo.
Still waiting on the source tree to drop sadly.

Froyo isn't out yet. Google has not released it yet. There were some review units that Google sent Froyo to for review purposes only, but it has not been released to the public. The only reason the public has it is because of these leaks.
I expect Google to have it up as soon as it publicly drops. Now HTC on the other hand...

This is incorrect. The Linux Kernel source is licensed under the GPL which means when you release something that uses it you must release any modifications you made to it. Android however is not licensed under such a license. It is under the Apache license which means any changes that Google, HTC, Cyanogen or any other entity makes to it do not have to be released. Now, Google changing the kernel source, yes that does mean they need to release that. But just that. They will release it all in time though. Should be this week or next week I would assume.

Does it even matter anymore? The devs have left the hero, it will be months before we see a working Rom and I bet the evo gets it before we do .

I have no doubt the Evo will get it first. But we still have devs on the board.
Darch has already commited to building an AOSP FrpYp, and there is enough documentation laying around here for anyone with some Linux-Fu to be able to take out our Hero Kernel and drop it into any system dump or boot image and at least make it bootable. Not necessarily 100% functional, but bootable.
I have no doubt that within a few days of Google dropping FroYo source that we have a functional version.
Also, I at this point in time don't care about HTC Sense UI. AOSP is awesome with ADW lancuher. That thing only keeps getting better. He has a build with gesture controls built in coming soon.
The ONLY thing I don't like about AOSP is Exchange emails with more than 1 attachment won't show me the email text...but I think this is just a user error.
For now I have been forwarding the email to my Gmail address to read it.

Yes there is. Start developing. Don't whine that someone else isn't doing the work anymore. Step up to the plate and do the work. I'm sick of people whining about developers moving to different phones and leaving users behind. They're not "leaving users behind", they're moving forward and they owe you nothing. This isn't the Marines. This is technology and business.
Complaining about them upgrading and not working on the ROM for your phone is like complaining that they didn't write ROMs for the G1 or Nexus 1. Should they be forced to buy those phones to develop on? Absolutely not.
Besides those points, your post still contains some ignorance. Damage stated he's not giving up development for the Hero, he's busy getting married this week. TrevE said he's backing away from the Evo for a bit to focus on the Hero. Darch is definitely still around, despite people trying to get him to move to the Evo. Where's the problem?
There's no point in arguing with both of you.for some reason when someone says the word dev you guys start creaming your pants and when the least bit of negative is said you guys go to McDonald's and order a whamburger and French cries. This is the internet morons and both of you need to get off the dev's nut sack and understand that I have an opinion and I'm gonna use it. Now both of you can go hold each other now.

If I had a facebook account I would do that. Looking at their wall it doesn't seem too many people are taking the advice though.
I thought the deadline for releasing source code was something like within 90 days of software release? Am I wrong?
I never understood the need for delay; theoretically aren't they supposed to release the same exact code that they used to compile whatever it was they released in the first place? HTC or any other manufacturer shouldn't need any time to modify it or anything, right?
They do not have to change anything as far as I understand. But for some reason they don't care to share they're keeping the Shift Source Code kernel a little longer. Hell they already released the EVO3D code. Just don't get it.
All right just posted on they're wall on FB! C'mon everyone help out!

From what I have seen, there is no provision in the GPLv2 terms for any "delay".
